Opal Travel Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

Useless. Always logs you out. Useless app. Always logs you out and since signing back in is such a pain, there's no point of using this app.

Trip Planner needs work. Google maps does a better job of listing Opal route options than this app does. Unlike website search, this app doesn’t let you set route options. It always picks the “fastest” route, which is often just walking. For older folks who would prefer to ride despite taking longer, this app is useless. Ended up using Uber instead of the Opal service several times!

Session ends too often. Why do i have to login every pretty much 1hr to check my left over amount. Please let us keep the login

fix your issues please. i cant even top up my card multiple times despite deleting and downloading it again. also my friend topped up her card with $60 yet in the app it appeared 6$

Don't use this app. No wifi, Doesn't work

Delete this app. Please delete this app from the App Store. Utterly useless

App is stuck in some weird “less walking” setting. For some reason the app has started only showing me directions that minimize walking. So now if I’m trying to check timetables for my usual commute, which was usually a ferry + 30 mins walking or a bus + 20 mins walking, it’s now only showing routes that involve 5 mins or less of walking. There seems to be no place in the app to change this preference and it’s basically useless to get directions that add 30 minutes to my commute and three extra transport methods just to shave 20 mins off a walk. Super frustrating!

Forces me to update. Minor UI changes ? And I cannot use the app without updating it ? why

Freezes about 75% of the time. The app is mostly intuitive, but rather unstable. Most of the time, it will freeze and must be closed and reopened, sometimes multiple times.

App is terrible. I’ve tried at least 20 times to search a simple trip and app crashes every single time. It’s completely useless.

Works well. travel planner quite helpful, overall pretty good

App does not read card NFC? Please fix. Yes yes I know apple did not allow nfc read until recently, but this has changed with iOS 13. So no excuses, please fix this and add the card nfc read to the app.

Bug fix. Isn't really a bug fix, more a removal of the wording "Free travel" and changed to "Reward" how about you call it was it is instead of hiding behind the over used App Store term "Bug Fix" consumers are adult enough to understand why and what needed to be done, just stop being lazy and tell us what you're doing!

Useless. The only usefulness is the ability to top up. The journey planner is useless. There is no live tracking and based only on outdated published schedules.

Opal. It would be awesome to be able to add the opal card to wallet to check the balance as other transportation apps.

Scan options. Cannot scan the card using phone. Option is seen in other versions where any other card is scannable to know the balance.

Good app but could you please add paypal?. Top up on the app is great bit could you please add paypal as an option? Thanks!

When can you use Apple Pay?. I really hope one day I will be able to use my Opal Card registered instead of using Visa/Mastercard that doesn’t have Weekly Travel discount.

The programmers must be sadists. The app intentionally disables the ability to paste an opal card number when adding a new card. Too much focus on flash. Too little on ease of use.

Archaic App. Utter crap. Trip planner is useless. Way better on chrome.

Lacks custom options. Lacks many of the Options available on the website’s Trip Planner. I’m dumping it from my iPhone. I still get better info from the TransportNSW Trip Planner via Safari. Had high hopes, dashed.

Love the Siri integration. …just wish it supported topping up via Siri on the Apple Watch. With this and actionable push notifications for low balances, this app is finally useful! Perhaps except the 15 minute delay for updating the balance really stinks when you forget it is low so I will probably still have to go to the terminal and top up manually (auto top up is no good because it takes too much money each week — I would rather it automatically do so when tapping on with a balance of less than zero).

Doesn’t work with Apple wallet. No reason why Opal card shouldn’t be able to work in Apple wallet like other countries travel cards Eg Suica (Japan). Transferring balance to another card requires closing first card. So for Eg. If you have a normal card then want to transfer balance onto a concession card, your old card gets closed, then when or if your concession expires you then have to spend more money to buy & wait for another regular card again. Update: in response to developers response to just using credit card. That doesn’t work if you have a concession Opal card, which I mentioned above & is stated in the link you provided. Which is not very convenient for the elderly or disabled. (But hey we’re used to being forgotten about)

Great, but one suggestion…. Love this app and it gets me around NSW easily, and with a little planning for peanuts compared to taxis etc. I wish you could implement a feature to display the next services at a particular stop. When I click ‘next service info’, I assumed I get just that, but then it insists to asks me for a drop off stop. This is no different to the journey planner! What I really think would be a nice to have, if I name a stop, and *no* drop off stop, and all services that are scheduled next are displayed from that stop, no matter where they go. That would be great!

“Error processing request”. I’m writing this review on the train, after failing to tap on, as potential proof in case that a transit offer gives me a fine and I have to go to court to appeal the fine. The basic function of this app is to top up your Opal card. Seemingly, the app did that, and my debit card was debited ahead of my trip today. However, now the app is showing “error processing request” and, despite money coming out of my account, my card hasn’t just not been topped up, it’s also completely unregistered! Which is shocking, but not surprising. Don’t download this app, top up in person, and fire everyone involved in the creation of the Opal Card.

Changing password wiped my cards. I went into my account to Top Up 2 of my 3 cards which was easy to do. Then I went to change my password which I do with some of my accounts, again easy to do. However when I signed back in my cards had disappeared. Where are my 3 cards. How can changing a password remove them. I tried to re-link my Opal card but it said it was already registered to an account. So now what? I even went on to the website and still no cards linked to my account.

Don’t bother. The amount displayed on the app is never correct and it always displays a lower amount than what you really have to make you think you need to top up when you don’t... I only downloaded the app because opal forced me to so I could continue paying the minimum top up amount (I’m a student on a low income so my budget is insanely tight) but was surprised to discover (through my bank statement not opal...) that every transaction done on the app occurs a $1 fee (no wonder they’re trying for force people to use the app) thats not mentioned at all during the purchase process 😑 I would give them 0 stars but I couldn’t write a warning without giving them atleast 1, Ended up deleting the app after 48 hours

Tap off. Recently I contacted Opal to suggest that it would be a good idea to be able to advise of a none tap off & be able for them to make adjustment accordingly with relevant information as to where the said journey ended, to be able to reimburse account. I have been charged maximum fare twice on journeys into city on very busy buses, where standing passengers have had to get off and on again in order for me and other passengers to alight bus, and with all the commotion tap off was not possible or forgotten. With all the monies they make from these none tap offs I guess this is very low on their priorities. Which in return is just another annoyance of public transport. It would be an easy solution to make through the app instead of having to call, and be held in a queue where our call is important - not ☹️

Useful but buggy & frustrating sometimes. This app is useful. Being able to quickly search for routes from A to B, set auto top-up, as well as save common trips, is nice. I especially like that I can specify whether I want my trip search to be “arrive by X” or “depart before Y”. But sometimes it doesn’t show trips that should be there (it happened to me once at the train station at 10pm; it didn’t show any of the trains that were clearly running. And other times when it didn’t show trips for public transport that are just minutes away). And the map just keeps returning to its original state no matter how many times I rotate it or zoom it in/out, it’s infuriating. I rotated/zoomed the map for a reason, so it’s easier to get my bearings when I’m travelling; stop auto-reverting to the default! And the trip info chin is sometimes REALLY hard to swipe down: like no matter where I swipe it just refuses to go back down and jus let me look at the map. In summary, my main gripes with the app are the map that simply refuses to stay the way I put it, and occasionally missing trips. I still use the app because it’s mostly good but I’m gonna have to start checkin out other travel apps to see if there’s something better.

Poor redesign!. The redesign of the saved trips functionality is really impractical and annoying. Firstly why are the saved trips on the home screen presented with a horizontal scroll? Vertical is always the way to go with this to quickly access all of the saved trips. This wouldn’t be so much of a problem if the saved trips also showed up on the default trip planner screen like they used to be (vertically) but these have also been removed. I just don’t understand this. I didn’t really have any functionality complaints about the app before, but this redesign is really disappointing and frustrating. Saved trips are no longer easy to access which I think would be one of the top priories of such an app. It wasn’t broken before! EDIT: Why has the departure time been removed from the search results!!

Bad day?. I’m not sure what happened today. It’s been a few years since I’ve used the app which I used to love as it was great realtime data on trains. But the train I got at Sydney Domestic Airport didn’t exist on the app and all the way out to Macarthur the arrival times at stations did not match anything on the app. The app told me it was a 19min wait for the next train going to Macarthur however, the platform notice said the next train to Macarthur was leaving in one minute. it’s always annoying as you get a little nervous on which one’s right as wouldn’t be the first time platform notices have changed literally when the train is at the platform. Hopefully a one off bad day for the app…

Took 10 dollars off my bank account !!!!!. Called them to ask for at least my other 5 bucks back then they say there’s a problem with the opal app and because I’ve been recharging every two days. How’s recharging a problem that it takes an extra amount of money from me. Even though it’s just 5 bucks it’s still money. And also the app it self is useless. It logs me out every time for no reason whatsoever, every time I try to log in it says server not connected HOWW , when I’ve got good wifi connection.

Seeing improvements but…. Please look through the lens of someone who wants to engage with you through the app. It’s as if all your developers hate hate hate the app. Everything is easier via a web page (and shouldn’t be). Payments, verification, pasting details. Every time I use the app I just end up going to the web page. Verify contactless- quit setup go look on the app for the trip, restart the setup, need to verify again, quit the set up, …. Still can’t paste a credit card #! Even worse… Not saving the progress if cc setup… yes, your developers hate the app, and want everyone else to hate it

Improvements needed. The app is ok, yet it is still substandard compared to using the trip planer in your web browser. It doesn’t give you the latest updates about sudden and unexpected changes to the train you are taking, like change of platform or delays. Yet the web browser will. How does the make sense when the reason for having this app is to check times on the go?! Also the amount of stops and the stop by stop list is not listed, and no total travel time shown either. If these things could be added and fixed it would be a great app.

Opal: More expensive, more problems. Still do not understand how opal has a 1 hour processing time when you’re trying to top up your balance for some overpriced travel fares for a service that’s probably already 10 minutes late. It’s 2022 and the team at opal still can’t process these transactions within a few minutes? Also, no landscape layout? Pretty poor form for an iPad app, I doubt it’s that hard to make a landscape design, just copy how the website is designed! One day I hope we have a proper transit system in Sydney with consistent, reliable transport that doesn’t rely on god-awful buses.

Feedback. It’s a great app. But with the new Metro train and tram from Circular Quay to Randwick including the Castle Hill trains the announcer need to change the use of language. I was on the tram this evening and a group of white Middle Ages to retirees we’re talking to each other. One older lady said the word “alight” for someone whose a non-English tourist person this word doesn’t mean anything to them. The government need to change the language use through our communications with public transportation to make it more accessible to everyone. I though this was a really good feedback that I felt it was necessary to share with the transport government department. Please change the word “alight” to something else. Keep it simple for example the next stop is Randwick not please alight at the next stop Randwick. Thank you!

Can't load saved trips, can't log in, etc.. Like many other recent reviews here, I used to use this app a lot over the years and it did its job well. These days however it hangs on the "uploading saved trip data" screen, so have to manually enter trip info every time. It periodically forgets my saved opal cards too, and won't let me reregister them as they're already registered by another user (me). After updating, reinstalling, and getting perplexed customer support, I can't recommend this app at all. You'll have to bookmark the transport website to look up times, and bookmark the opal website to top up. Developers, considering the number of users who are having these issues, please work on a solution!

Fine for what it does.... This app does just fine at what it is intended to do. I even prefer it as a trip planner to many of the other options. But please tell me someone is working on turning this app into a functual replacement for the physical opal card itself??? Why is there not a barcode (or whatever the appropriate technology is) built in that I can use to SCAN when I've accidentally left my card in my other bag/pocket/car, instead of having to pay cash (which I usually don't have) to my bus driver and then buy a single ticket (which is a very annoying process) at the station.

Please change it back to the older version. I’ve been using this app for several years, and a few months ago there was an update that made it abit more inconvenient. When you go to the trip planner to select your saved trips, it doesn’t show you all the saved trips like it used to, instead for some reason it shows only half of the saved trips and the other half is a history of past trips. This is very inconvenient since I catch the bus to work every day, and even though the address of my work is the most frequently looked up location, it doesn’t show up on my list. I am also unable to edit the list so I cannot delete any of the previous saved address. I have to physically look up my works address every morning so what’s the point in saving addresses ? Also, when you’re on the main screen, you can see “saved trips” to swipe right and “recent trips” to swipe right. I do not understand why my actual most frequent/recent trips don’t appear here either but a trip I did about a week or two ago once appears here all the time. I think it would be much better if this part of the app changed back to how it used to be.

The best app for Sydney travelers. This app is the best! You can get trips for all types of transport modes. You can either select the transport you prefer or use the trip planner that, if needed, will combine transportation modes and find the best route. It’s always up to date. It’s really easy to navigate. You have in app notifications if there are expected large gatherings that might cause delays. You can save favourite trips. If you use an opal card, you can link your bank card, setup automatic top ups, see your opal card balance. If you loose your card you can report it on the app. I love the recent update, so you now have a search bar in the home page, to search quickly, the saved trips are no longer hidden, before you had to scroll which annoyed me. And there are recent trips as well 👏 love everything about this app

Who thought verifying debit card was good idea?. How seriously inconvenient and clunky of an idea that I gotta go and remember what bus I caught on Monday at 4:37pm the exact bus stops NAME where I got on, and the exact bus stops NAME where I got off. Are you having a laugh? Who on earth knows any of the bus stops names? Like couldn’t you have thought of any other format to verify? Now I gotta open up TripView a third party app, set up a trip to which I hope is the right one and then find the name of the bus stop, put that in, then do again for getting off. WHAT! that’s wild that that got through. And to top it off after doing all that, it says failed to connect! Lol what are you guys smoking hahahah

Troubles. Although I think the concept of Opal card is great, I’ve had a few challenges. Firstly living interstate and not using my card for several years, I was unable to add money or make any changes via the website or app and needed to call the help centre. They were very helpful and helped to reactivate my card so that money would be added once I tapped on in Sydney. This worked but the following day auto top up didn’t work when I tapped on. I need to call again and re enter my bank card details over the phone while I was in a public place with I felt uncomfortable about. Then later during the day my bank showed multiple pending withdrawals and my Opal card showed several transactions both in through auto top up and out with only one train journey showing. Very confusing. I’m giving it a few days to hopefully correct itself. It’s been a bit frustrating and I’m hoping the rest of my stay there will be no more glitches.

Verify an opal card. Please - change the opal card verification process so that when an opal card is verified in the opal app - it’s verified in the app .. not just only on a computer. That’s not the message heard when calling the opal 13xxxx for assistance - “go to the app etc etc “ .. that is clearly misleading and wrong. Your own call centre staff say it must be verified on a computer. So just say that in the app or on the call centre recordings - or simply change it. Unbelievably frustrating and difficult to do simple common sense things in an app when you actually cannot. Thank you.

Much improved. But forced updates?!. The app has gotten way better than when first released. Initially I didn’t use it at all, because a third party app was better, but now it’s quite reasonable and can do most things I’m after (and it doesn’t require signing in every time I open the app - thank you!). But this morning I was forced to upgrade the app as it would not allow me to open an out of date version of the app. “There must be something pretty important they’ve fixed,” I thought, because I haven’t seen this done in any other app I’ve ever used (apart from apps that can’t open when they have become incompatible with iOS updates). When I checked the App Store to download the update, the new version contains “minor UI updates”!? For something so trivial TfNSW are forcing me to download the update? Come on! For a major security flaw, that is fair enough and something other developers should actually look at implementing, but don’t lock me out of the app just because the new version looks slightly different. What if I was in a rush to catch a bus or train and trying to add credit to my Opal? Instead of ignoring the update so I could get to work on time, I’d need to update before doing anything and maybe miss the service I was after. If phone reception is bad that’d take even longer. I think it’s a good thing you’ve worked out how to force users to update an app by not permitting an out of date app to be opened - but only use this power wisely and when really necessary. Please.

good enough. I use this app to top up my opal card fortnightly. Just had an issue once where I topped up, they took my money but the amount didn’t get to my opal (they had a glitch that day); I contacted opal, they fixed it straight away and I got my money back. It works well every other time, I never top up any other way! It’s so convenient and fast! It’s a good app, just a little laggy sometimes. I think the trip planner could use some improvements though. I save trips but I can’t seem to reverse some of them (like you can with trip view). But it’s good that the trip planner here is more reliable than other apps tho, because sometimes TripView is wrong.

Feedback is a joke. Doesn’t matter how many times the same problem occurs. Standard answers, that are offensive(they imply you are lying when you are whiteness twice to drivers skipping bus stops to not pick up disabled people when they are clearly requesting to stop and so are other people on the bus stop) or just insulting to your intellect (the temperature is kept constant even when the aircon AND fan is off, apparently magic makes the airflow with no airflow -let’s not forget we have no airflow in public transport during a pandemic). They decide when they want to answer feedbacks too (apparently they get tired of answering the same feedback... and we don’t get tired of sending the same feedback.. apparently we do it FOR FUN!!. Months and months with same issue same busses: nothing done. The customer service of this app is not good... you can look the other feedbacks here and you will see...

Meh. Not good, not bad. The timetable info is always wrong for me when leaving my home. It provides me with services which don't even come through my area. For the card itself it is pretty good. Card activity needs to become real time. EDIT: reduced rating to 1 star. Haven't used for a while but suddenly wants to track location while not using app so it can tell me where I am when I do use it; something which the app could do in a matter of moments of simply turning it on... Bit of a joke, will only use to see card balance, otherwise turn to non government apps for more reliable info on a government service.

NEED TO CHANGE AUTO TOP UP VALUE IF REQUIRED. My credit card needed updating so I did that in the app, I was asked if I wished to enable ‘auto top up’, yep did that - the. realised ai should probably like to top up with more cash than I had initially chosen . However, there’s nowhere on the app to change that amount it seems, I have to go to the website, sign in etc. I know that I can top up as I go (but this is not immediately reflected in my balance as previously complained about by other users). But surely something as simple as enabling me to change the auto top up amount in the app should be possible, and also to disable the auto top up. This app is taking a very long time to get right!

Bugs need to be fixed. I like using the app but a number of bugs keep occurring - incorrect value, funds awaiting transfer (despite already occurring) and more recently dynamic fonts When planning or choosing a trip, I can no longer see the route number - requiring the user to open each trip on the he list to determine route and method of transport. This is confusing when there are multiple stops within a 1km radius to get to in a short amount of time

Can be badly unreliable.. This app has generally been working well enough for me but has recently been so badly unreliable that I haven't been able to get to where I'm going a few times. One time, I ended up thinking my preferred bus had been cancelled as it was not displayed when I opened the app when I was about to go (despite it being displayed earlier) only to have it show up when I was too far away on my way to an (albeit later-scheduled) alternative bus stop. And now (as I write this), the bus seems to have either come earlier (despite being displayed to be late) than displayed or just not come at all. Quite disappointing and dismaying I have to say. I would like to ask that this app be made more reliable as it can be rather bad in this aspect and quite unacceptable I think.

It provides the bare minimum, lack of useful features.. The app lacks of “previous destinations” in Trip Planner. it would help so much if that would keep the previous destinations without the need to enter it again. Helps frequent travellers. It would be great if it tracked the actual geo position of buses and trains, so one would know how far the next bus is. The trip recommendation should take into consideration the actual location of buses and trains. it doesn’t seem to be the case. The feedback option should be on the actual trip that you select and hit “go”. Feedback would be more specific.

Terrible App. Opal Travel is a terrible app when it comes to bus travel. It does not show the bus one is to catch on the map so that it is not possible to see whether it’s running on time, when it arrives, or if it indeed arrives at the correct stand. I’ve missed buses because they’ve been early, and yet I’ve been left standing for ages thinking they’re late. In each case, had the bus been visible on the map I could have hurried up to be even earlier than I already was. I’ve missed a bus because the app gave it a different bus number. Again, had it appeared on the map I would have realised that this was the one I was meant to catch even though it had a different number. I’ve missed buses simply because they’ve driven by without stopping, by which time it’s been too late for me to flag them down. Had they been on the map I could have waived much sooner, giving the driver time to stop. I’ve also missed a bus because it’s stopped at the right bus stop but the wrong stand. I could have run to the correct stand if I’d been able to see on the map that that is where it had stopped. All in all a dreadful app.

Can’t see saved trips or look up new ones. Saved trips won’t load anymore. It says “this might take a few seconds”, I’ve been waiting for weeks. To top it all off, I can’t even look up new trips, as every time I try to, I get the same message “data is updating, this might take a few seconds” Got in touch with customer service twice and twice they’ve informed me that the App is working. How useful! Clearly, they haven’t even bothered to read the reviews. They should start again from square one. New app. Version 1.0. But one that actually does what it is supposed to do.

Saved Trips not visible ‘Data is being updated’. Saved a new trip last night, total of 2. Tried to call it up this morning ‘your saved trip data is updating. Was able to create a new trip to serve my purpose, saved trips STILL updating. Restarted iPhone, STILL updating. Gave up. Tried again on the way home, STILL updating, no saved trips visible. Saved another trip, not visible, you guessed it, STILL updating. I suppose I will have to forget all my trips and uninstall / reinstall the app (if I can find my login details….)

Best public transport system I’ve experienced. This is mostly a review for the public transport system. I always choose rail because buses are unreliable no matter where on earth you are. I have been on trains in Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane and my home city Sydney. When I was in Brisbane I was on a train that was running late so it skipped a station. I only have been on maybe 5 Qld trains and probably 30 Sydney trains in my life and it has never happened in Sydney which proves Sydney PT is better than Brisbane PT. The trains and stations are clean and there is always a nearby station. Most subway systems are dirty and the trains are old and uncomfortable. But on a Sydney Train the seats are comfortable and the trains are modern. The downsides are that trains are at my station less often due to the fact that I live in a very suburban area with not many shops, business, etc. Although when I am travelling on a train i notice that there are benefits to the train not stopping at every station. It gets me faster where I need to go. So they just need to have trains running more often. Not sure if opal is in charge of this or transport for nsw. Also at the train station, on the screen it may say 2 minutes until the next train, that then changes to 3 then to 2 then to 1 then to 4. This is not a big problem but overall Sydney PT is a very good system.

Can you improve?. For a government developed app it's actually working quite well – most of the time. Some reason for concerns of privacy is the need to always have access to your location even when the app is on the background. Do you really need to know my whereabouts all the time? Why not offer the option to only allow access to my location while using the app like so many other apps do? The map view could also be improved by showing the direction I'm looking at. Similar to what Apple maps do with the second tap on the arrow, toggling between North Up mode and Direction of Travel mode. This is helpful when the location signal isn't accurate enough (such as when you're in the CBD) to put my location on the right spot on the map and trying to figure out if I'm on the right side of the road for that bus stop. It would also help to know how far away a bus is that this app tells me to use. Is the 428 still to come as the app tells me, or has it already moved on, but the app didn't register that.

Don’t fix what isn’t broken!. Upon opening the app proceeding the latest update, I’ve been left most displeased with the fact that all of my opal card balances, travel routes and history have been removed from the account in lieu of registering a new card or creating and signing into an account. Why do developers feel the incessant need to fiddle and meddle with applications that work otherwise perfectly fine the way they are!? I’ve now had to waste time creating an account, logging in, linking the card to the app, adding payment details, creating a password etc etc when all the developers had to do was… nothing. Just leave it how they found it.

Claiming incorrect fares is tedious. I recently found out you can’t use different devices to tap on and off the Opal system even though they are attached to the same credit card. Instead, you will be charged the max fare twice. So trying to undo this mess, there’s an option to dispute fare. Pretty great feature however every time you have to enter your mobile number which why not save it as it saves the name and email address in the form. Next, the form only submits some of the time and you have to play around with it / or wait (I’m not really sure what) till it will allow you to submit another dispute. It’s an alright app but please, fix the fare dispute feature or even better prevent it in the first place by linking all devices under one credit card.

Not always reliant. I don’t expect this app to be amazing, it’s for NSW transport after all. But the delay in relevant information is annoying at best, especially when you’re on the go - which if you’re using an app on a phone is pretty much a given. If you can tap your card and have it instantaneously tell you whether you have funds, the app should be able to tell you just as quickly, and you should be able to see your tap on/off activity in real time. Instead there’s hours of delay because of... reasons? Also, forcing people to update before they can use the app is inconvenient when you’re out and reliant on phone data/signal strength. Not everyone is going to have the perfect combination, and yet they still need access to their Opal account - forcing an update locks them out. Little tweaks could make this a great app.

Where are the busses. Every morning I walk to the bus stop trying to get to school. It doesn’t matter how on time I am my bus never comes. I was just waiting 2 hours for my bus that apparently had come and been 3 times while I was standing at the bus stop. The busses that did pull up where ones that went everywhere surrounding my schools area but never my school. It’s honestly annoying when I wake up at 6 and don’t leave till 10. My school starts at 8. It is now 10:37. I’ve been issued a suspension warning because they don’t believe that my busses just don’t show up and I think I’m going insane. Please fix the accuracy of the app🙏 if the bus doesn’t come for another 45 mins just show that rather than telling me it’ll be there in 6 mins and the bus that shows up doesn’t even touch my destination area.

Time bug. The new updates is worth than before. The time goes wrong so many times. For example, the plan on the app shows bus come at 8:10am arrive at 8:23am (station) and takes train to go to the CBD at 8:18am?? How can I take the train 8:18 while I will arrive at 23?? Moreover, the time on the app sometimes goes wrong too. It said 2mins before starting but the bus crossed the stop while I was on the opposite side of the road. It means the bus had come 4 mins early but the app did not notify. Please fix the time bug, at least the 1st one that I mentioned. The last version I used doesn’t have this problem. Thanks

App update useless. After updating the app and my credit card details so that auto top up would still work my opal card now won’t top up. It said opal card not registered so I tried to link it again but it says it’s linked to a different account. So either the updated app doesn’t process that the card was linked to the app or the card won’t work with updated credit card details. I can only top up at the machines now and the app is worthless! I can’t call any customer service to reset the linking of the card as there are no options to speak to a real human despite it advertising the number for enquires and issues. Hopeless!

Stop being stingy and fix the top up delay. If your debit card is automatically billed when using the app to top up your opal card, then said funds should be instantly available to use, not in an hour or two hours or whenever. Sydney Transport COULD fix this, but they can’t resist the extra revenue gleaned from penalising opal cards with pending balances by deducting the highest amount. This wouldn’t be an issue if I topped up my card in stores regularly but hey, I’m disorganised... so instead I’ll continue being Sydney transport’s stooge, as the NSW liberal government think that an adequate public transport system is pointless if they can’t turn a profit of it (unlike London which prioritises its world city status by investing revenue from its transport system back into itself)

Useless for topping up your opal card. Actually the app does look good and is simple to use. But if you are looking to use it for putting some cash onto your opal card this technology becomes useless. It takes ages to be able to see your current balance, as my last update of the card balance was 5 days ago and still didn't change. Also the balance transfer takes hours to be used which makes the whole experience very inconvenient. Why does a third party recharge your card instantly and your own app doesn’t? Hopefully you are taking the reviews seriously and will implement some changes in the future to improve the user experience.

Does what it does well, but.... This app is really good for looking at your opal card balance, history, and topping up when your credit is low. But recently the maximum top up amount was reduced to $60. This is not much more than a week of travel, or only 2 days if you go to the airport! Please increase the maximum top up back to $120 (or even better $200) so heavy users dont need to top up all the time! An option to type in the topup amount (like the Victoria MyKi app has) might be useful.

Balance Inaccurate. One of the thing that the app was designed for, yet it is inaccurate. When I tapped on it displayed 35 on the tap on machine (which sounds about right), on the app it shows only 32. From even just the most recent top up, not including the previous balance before top up gave me at least 33 (manually calculated using a calculator). Yet the opal card has had it up to 32 something. This is no longer a matter of updating (no matter how you update (or lack of update) it shouldn’t end up at that value not to mention all past journeys had already shown up on the record). It is a matter of bad calculations and misleading information. This is not the first time it has happened, sometimes it is correct, sometimes it is not, the website which is probably where the app is based off has also the wrong value. And it has been for a quite couple of years. I never worried about it since I thought government surely can’t rip us off right? But after such a long time and still see it unfixed it is concerning. I beg you guys please check and see it fixed!! #concessionopal

Opal Travel App (Updated Review). When I originally reviewed this app a week or so ago, I rated it 3 stars, unfortunately after using this app for about 1 and a half weeks, I’ve noticed a few things which has driven my rating down. I’m still very disappointed that in 2023, Opal still Dosent have apple and for that matter google pay support, so you can’t tap on digitally. I’m aware of the upcoming plans for Opal+ (A subscription version of Opal) and the fact that you can tap on via Apple Pay with a credit or debit card, but Opal+ likely won’t work for 50%+ users of the Opal network, and some of us have concession cards (e.g youth), so by tapping on via debit card we would be loosing our 50% discount. Another thing to mention is that this app really should add widgets to both the Lock Screen and Home Screen, so we can check our balance at a glance, or maybe on the digital card it could show our balance inside of Apple wallet? Similar to how rewards card show how much points you have on the wallet pass. Regardless, I still think the Opal app has amazing potential I just think the government needs to invest a little more time and money into it, and realistically with the way everything is going digital, it’s time for Opal to step up. Cheers, Wayde.

Still waiting for a bus to turn up on time. This app is the single worst app to exist, it decides to change times on when a bus will come causing you to run to the bus stop on numerous occasions only for the bus to have arrived before the time its meant to be there causing you to miss your bus, also sometimes it switches it up and the bus can be 10-15 minutes late, i can deal with maybe 2-5 minutes late, but srsly 10-15 is crazy, caught buses for the past few months and not once has a bus been there at the time its meant to be, im already sick of sprinting to the bus stop to find out the bus was either early and is already gone (because that makes sense, it feels like the time a bus is meant to be there is just a game of rolling a die and guessing) or having the bus 15 minutes late, sort it out.

Not great for tourists. I’m sure the app is fine for locals but for tourists there is not enough information. Needs to have a filter for bus, train or ferry so you can search only for the options you want. Tapping on a location and bringing up a screenshot map to see the location of the station. Being able to add legs to make the trip if more than one is required. E.g. when planning a trip from Darling Harbour to Taronga Zoo it wants me to walk 34min to Circular Quay to catch the ferry when I can see a ferry and a bus in front of my hotel that I could catch instead of walking. It comes up if I look up only that leg but not if I look up the whole trip. Hope this helps.

Home screen should better show preferred trips. Since a few versions, i have to scrolled down to select one of my frequent trips, and even having scrolled down the home screen, i need to scroll on the side when i need to look for trains in the other direction. Really not user friendly, was better before. Please add all these notifications/announcement in another screen, please focalise on the major use case why people have this app: find out when their next train is leaving. Oh another usability regression: in planner results, please reinstate BOTH departure and arrival time.

NFC SCANNING!! 🎉🎉. Thank you for finally adding NFC functionality to the app! I know it was two months ago but I haven’t needed to use the app during that time and I’ve only just seen this feature now. This is a great step to take further advantage of the iPhones capabilities. Next step, tap to board via Apple Pay but using opal credit and counting towards your weekly rewards? Thanks again!
