Sight Words Ninja - Slicing Game to Learn to Read App Description & Overview

What is sight words ninja - slicing game to learn to read app? "A great way to give parents a break and let your kid have fun and learn to read at the same time." - Jen, Kindergarten teacher and mom of three.

I have a confession to make. My son's favorite game was Fruit Ninja and I was getting increasingly frustrated with having my son waste a lot of time on a fun but mindless game while he was still struggling to master his sight words and learning to read.

So I decided to create our very own Sight Words slicing game and to my and my son's delight, he now has a new favorite game where he is having fun and learning at the same time.

My sons skills in recognizing Sight Words have dramatically improved since he started playing this game and now I no longer have to feel guilty when I need a five minute break to take care of the laundry or prepare lunch for the kids. I know that they are having fun and that they are learning at the same time.

Warning: Your child will keep begging for your iPhone or iPad after they try this app.

Sight Words Ninja is an exciting educational game that helps kids rapidly learn sight words by sight, sound, and touch.

The interface is so easy to use that even a 9 month old baby will delight in using this app.

FEATURES:

• Slice your way through all sights words from preschool to grade 3

• You decide what to focus on - turn individual categories ON or OFF from the settings page

• Learn by sight, sound, and touch

• Fun game play, sounds, and animations keep kids engaged

• Dynamic game play adjusts difficulty (the number of sight words) automatically based on player skills to keep kids both challenged and entertained vs. getting bored

• Supports 3 difficulty settings: EASY, MEDIUM, or HARD

EASY MODE:
- Max 1 sight word
- Sight words move very slowly
- Great for introducing sight words one at a time

MEDIUM MODE:
- Starts with 1 sight word
- Max of 3 sight words on screen
- Sight words move 30% faster

HARD MODE:
- Starts with 2 sight words
- Max of 5 sight words on screen
- Sight words move even faster
- Sight words rotate faster too

Adjust difficulty from settings page.

• Wrong answers do not interfere with gameplay, the child can immediately try again and slice the correct answer (most other games are too slow to keep kids interested by interrupting the gameplay and slowly repeating the desired question)

• Play Sight Words from A to Z or in random order (adjustable from settings page)

• Multi-sensory learning tool - combining audio, voice, and touch

• Want to work on just a few Sight Words? No problem… head to the settings page to turn entire categories or individual Sight Words on and off

• Want to record your own audios? No problem. Just click on the category and record your own Sight Words sounds

• Supports three levels of difficulty

The sound doesn’t always work.. How is my 5 year old supposed to chop the correct word if she can’t hear what the word is?? I don’t normally pay for apps but she really wanted this game so I gave it a shot! Not worth the $1.99

Is there audio?. I downloaded but there’s no audio.

I have a lot of complaints. It doesn’t repeat any words from what I can tell so it is too many different words in one session. The child probably isn’t retaining anything. MANY of the words cannot fully be seen because they don’t fully come out from the sides into the middle area. So boring!! Nothing changes, there are no new backgrounds to unlock, no cool swords or ways to slice or different voices.. characters.. nothing! No kid wants to play this.. If my child is in pre school, i have to go into the settings and turn off all the first, second, and third grade words one at a time which is a pain. I wish you could just turn them off by grade level.

Not for beginners. Your child will have to know all the sight words before being able to play this game. It is not a learning app to help your child actual learn sight words.

Perfect. If your kids loves fruit ninja and needs to learn some sight words then this combo makes it more fun and easier

Do not buy. I know it’s only $1.99 but it is a waste of $$$. The only good thing about it is the concept. My child was totally into it. However, the app works by the narrator reading each word and the kid just slices the word. My child just swiped all the words as fast as she could. There was no word repetition or word grouping. This does not help a kid retain the info. Also, as another reviewer stated, you cannot turn words off without clicking each word or an ability to set the level of the “reader”. The only way we were able to make it work was to turn the sound off and I said my child could not swipe until they read the word correctly. This required me to be by their side the whole time. May as well just buy flash cards! Clearly this was not developed by an actual educator! Great concept but terrible execution.

Sound doesn’t work. This could be a great app - if the sound actually worked. Super lame for an app that requires sound to play and isn’t free.

Terrible- do NOT waste your money. After reading the reviews from alleged teachers and parents, I bought this app for my son. What a joke. It’s just words flying that he taps- no reading, no thoughtful learning or review and not at all engaging. After five minutes, he put it down and has no interest in it- and this is a kid who would do just about anything for screen time! If I could give it zero stars, I would.

Love it. My son loves it I love that it educates my children

Not what I expected. Very boring and I’m not sure that it’s very educational. Can be “won” even with no sound on. The kid just needs to touch or swipe every word that pops up. It doesn’t test whether the kid recognizes them or not, plus just gets boring after one minute of that as nothing changes.

My own list. I used to be able to add my own list of words. Why am I not able to now?

What is the purpose of this app. This was a waste of $2. I thought there’d be some option to have the app read the word when it is chopped - nope it’s totally silent. Also would be nice the be able to customize which words are on the list.

Great game but wish we could add words. My 1st grader loves this game but it would be even better if we could add the sight words they are working with.

No sound. The sound stopped working after the first time I tried it. You also can’t add words that are missing from their premade lists.

Doesn't completely display some words. The words that come in from the sides never completely make it on to the screen. If the child can't see the whole word it defeats the purpose of the game. Other than that the app functions well, and my daughter loves it.

Settings you can’t get into. Anyone know how to get into the parental settings? 3- finger tap. I tap and tap and tap... made it in once, now can’t get back. I’ve got about 10 minutes of tapping in with no luck. Only thing I’ve succeeded in doing is constantly bringing up the iPhone zoom feature.

Do not buy. This app is great in theory but the follow through isn’t. The words stay on the side and aren’t fully visible. Defeats the purpose. Also, the words in the word bank are not the words my child needs to know. I wish there was an option to type my own words. My son would slice the correct word and not get points and sometimes get points for the wrong words. Do not waste your money.

No sound. I normally read reviews first, but remembered my friend talking about this app, so I bought it without reading first. BIG MISTAKE, there’s no sound so I was trying to figure out what I was suppose to do since it cute everything. Such a waste. Hopefully they update it.

Don’t waste your money. There is no sound. You can’t get to the settings. A big waste of time. I wish I had read the reviews before I paid for this piece of trash.

Didn't make the cut. Every word can be cut in half regardless if it is the correct one or not. It just doesn't give you a point for a wrong word. My kid just cuts all the words. I don't think he is grasping the concept

I like that I can customize which words. I like that I can choose which words I want my child to work on. My children like this app and it seems to be helping. The only thing I wish is that the word would be 100% visible all the time, what I mean by that is sometimes when the word comes up it is to far to the right or left that half or sometimes most of the word can’t be seen. Seeing the entire word and hearing the word is very important for my child to recognize it and reinforce what we have worked on with flash cards and reading. I would have given the app a 5 star rating if my child saw the entire words 100% of the time. Maybe an update will be able to fix this.

What a waste. It says the words aloud but most of the time the word being said is not the word on the screen. I don't think it has any educational value at all.

So disappointing. It doesn’t go through the words before you play the game. Kids are just randomly swiping words and not learning. Waste of money, expected more.

Sound doesn’t always work.. This is a neat concept. I hope over time my 4 year old will get something from it. It is frustrating that the app’s sound only works some of the time so she isn’t hearing what the words are. Wouldn’t recommend it as a learning app for this reason.

don't do it!. This is one of the worst apps I have come across. What a waste. The words don't always come all the way out from the edges, and you can keep moving you fingers across the screen and it just goes on. Slicing nothing and it will give a score. What is supposed to be learned ??? Sight words that never come all out on screen and slice or move finger over screen to what purpose if it just goes on. If you want to have your child learn sight words find something better than this and do not get this one.

I thought the sound didn’t work. The sound works fine. My iPad was muted. If you have this problem google the issue or: Open Control Center. If you have an iPad without Face ID, you open Control Center by swiping up from the bottom, but if your iPad does have Face ID, swipe down from the upper right corner. Look for the mute button. It's muted if it's highlighted, just tap it once to unmute the iPad. The mute button looks like a bell (it might have a slash through it on some iPads) Otherwise the app is better than sight words cards and other games we’ve tried. My son is 6, and he hates this less than my other efforts. I can also see see how it can be redundant. But again, so are flash cards.

Should be free. The ONLY thing this does; is say the word as it floats across the screen as your child chops it. I think he was just relentlessly taping/slicing and not paying any attention to the words! Literally that’s it! $1.99 waste of $. It does NOTHING ELSE!

Doesn’t actually teach or quiz. I thought there would be more than one word at a time on the screen and the kid would have to choose the correct one matching the spoken word. Nope. The word floats around and all you have to do is slice it. My kids got bored and began arbitrarily slicing and not even waiting for the full word to come into view. It doesn’t provide any phonics instruction. Total waste of money

Not a challenge at all. They say a word and the words pops up on the screen so slow that it becomes the only option for a child to swipe. There is no challenge the child just has to keep swiping. I would say this is only to help become more familiarized with words.

Cute—No Learning Involved. Like others said, my kids just mindlessly swipe every word as it comes up. My littlest does just as well as the older kids. I wish it worked. The graphics are cute!

Lacking in 1 very important thing:The Sound. At first this app was great and my dAughter and I loved it. After about a week the sound didn't' work no matter what I did to try and fix it. If the company fixes this, I would recommend it highly.

Sound stopped working; gameplay lame. I had some hopes for this, but the sound cut out permanently after one day of use. The gameplay also doesn’t make sense - why permit the wrong word to be sliced at all, or without consequence? A waste of $2.

Horrible. This app has no sound therefore if your child is trying to learn sight words they have no way of knowing if the word they sliced was a sight word or not. Take my advice and do NOT spend 1.99 on this!

Not for learning sight words. Mindless, wasted time! This is not designed for learning. What a shame, it had potential. Designed for kids to swipe back and forth on the screen until everything gets cut up. CHILDREN WONT BOTHER READING. Setting the app level did not work. Microphone access ? Why, that did nothing.

Waste of money. There is no sound and the words come across so quickly. My children slices them and doesn’t even see the words. Does not help with sight words at all. It is basically the same as fruit ninja but with a bigger target.

The word lists are quite limited. I just downloaded this app to augment my pre-K daughter’s memorization of her sight words before kindergarten. I’m disappointed because the lists are quite limited and missing a large percentage of the words they need to know by the end of kinder. I am going to send a request to the developer to add the missing words for us. Better yet, I’d like to have the ability to add my own words! One more small annoyance, but real, is that the words are not in alphabetical order. This makes selecting individual words that you want your child to work on more cumbersome and time consuming than it needs to be. All told, it’s $2 bucks, so it did not break the bank...but it could be much better, with ease.

Customer Service?. Purchased the app, had an excited kid ready to practice, and then ran into issues. Emailed customer service weeks ago with no reply.

Not what I expected. I was looking for something that would allow a kid to read the words and pronounce the words and this app seems to limit the participant to listening to someone else read the word aloud and make a hand gesture when something looks like what’s read aloud. Misleading if you want something that you can work on recognition and enunciation.

No sound. It has potential but the sound doesn’t work every time you open the app. Major flaw.

No custom lists of words. This game needs the ability to add your own child’s specific sight words that they are studying in school to help them study for tests.

Disappointed. I bought this app because I read that I could add my own sight words. Not the case here. You can turn their provided words on/off in settings. You cannot add your own. I’d like a refund.

No sound. No point.. I don’t understand how the kids are supposed to learn anything by just touching words and watching them get cut in half? Is there something I am missing?

No sound. Like some others, I was hoping I would get lucky and there would be sound. There wasn’t. I don’t understand how they can’t or won’t fix this. Waste of $2.

Glitch. Ap glitches on several words - currently it is not recognizing the word because

Sight words ninja. it helps kids to read a lot better .

Could be great, but it’s good.. First, BECAUSE is spelled incorrectly. Also, these words, which should be included are missing: Orange Purple Black Brown White Eight Nine Four Zero Fun Move Learn Also, the ability to add your own words or search for words to add would be ideal. I update the app every week to accommodate my daughter’s words of the week at school. We like the app! Haven’t had problems with the sound.

No sound. The sound doesn’t work. It would be a great game if the sound worked consistently

No sound. I read the reviews, crossed my fingers, and hoped I wouldn’t be one of the unlucky few without sound.... and found that there was no sound, so you don’t know which words to slice! I went through & meticulously followed the troubleshooting. No luck. I immediately emailed the company and got a response about a week later with the same troubleshooting cut & paste they posted in their review responses. I replied back asking for a refund and it’s now 2+ weeks later. If you can’t fix the bug, at least honor a refund request!

Bores quickly. My five year old who loves Fruit Ninja enjoyed slicing the words and scored well, but when there was nothing that happened after it (no “unlocking” different levels, or no variation of the game) he was quickly bummed and doesn’t want to play it again. I rarely pay for apps, and this is an example of why. I just wasted $2 for 2 minutes of game time.

Waste of money. The sound randomly works and doesn’t work. The game is basically just fruit ninja with words. The kid just can just swipe all over to cut words and since the sound rarely works there’s no real learning happening. Pointless $2 spent.

This is great. This is great I have just set it up so that my 12 sight words are playing for my students who are not picking their sight words easily. They will love this! I love how I can use my own voice as my students are EAL/D and will really benefit from the use of my own voice. One recommendation would be to save different settings or groups so that I can have some students on straight 12 golden words and then a group who can be on 12 golden words and some red words. That will be time consuming changing it regularly. Thank you so much though this is great!

Pretty 😎 COOL. Gotta admit that this education game has got some talent. When I was younger, I use to hate English and especially like sight word stuff. Then I started to use this game when I was like 5 and I 💖 LOVED ENGLISH!

Great sight words training. A great simple to edit and set up app. Choose your own or lists of words. Great for quick sight words practice!

Excellent app. My daughter now loves learning her sight words!

Great for ESL students too.. Like ABC Ninja this app is also great for new learners of English. It provides a fun alternative for students to repetitious cardboard flash-cards.

Was great...now it’s not. Used to be a wonderful app until sudden the sound doesn’t work anymore have uninstalled and reinstalled but still nothing it’s absolutely useless now....such a shame that no one maintains this app.

No sound. Mo sound. Is there supposed to be sound?

Educational and Fun!. Sight Words Ninja allows the teacher/parent to choose, with ease, which sight words the child will practise. Since children learn words best when no more than three new words are presented at once, this feature is vitally important. The speed at which the words fall can also be adjusted. Young children who are learning to read find Sight Words Ninja appealing and entertaining! Because the number of new words presented at a time can be controlled, they never find it frustrating -just challenging enough to be fun!

Settings bug. Can't get into settings with the three finger tap in order to set level etc. (Nothing happens). Otherwise seems like a great app.

Trouble with microphone. Sometimes the sound works perfectly and other times you don’t know which words to swipe.

No sound. Game is great and fun when it works but it’s pretty frustrating to pay for an app and only have the sound work about 15% of the time. DO NOT BUY.

No sound. Cannot play. No sound.

No sound!. There is no sound to the game, when the point is to identify sight words.

Andrew. You are the best💩

am liking this app ninja!!!!. you can deselect the words from list to have practice start with fewer words. will update to say how kids (2) like it.

Save your money. No sound. Junk

Not what the description says. You can’t add your own sights words like it said in the description. Total rip off!

Waste. Hate that I bought this and can't use it. No sound.

No sound - useless. Don’t waste your money

Not learning anything. No sound. Just slice words, might as well be playing fruit ninja.

No sound. Bummer. Good idea. Any way to get a refund? Or fix the sound?

No sound. No sound

No sound. I got this app for my almost 5 year old, and there is no sound...which defeats the purpose of learning sight words. Very disappointing.

No sound. This is a year after it was supposedly updated!

No bueno. Despite me setting it to a preschool level. It cont to throw out words that were not on the preschool list. Very unsatisfied for a paid app

No Sound. Bought this app for my 6 year old who is new to sight words. The app is useless with NO SOUND because she CAN’T read yet. Please update!

No Sound. Waste of money. The sound does not work.

Worthless. No sound and my daughter lost interest 30 seconds into the first game. If I could give no stars I would. Worse than free games!

No Sound. Half the time the sound doesn't work. When it does, it stops mid-game.

No Sound. would like my money back. Scam.

Awful. No sound...no instructions to play...words just appear...not a game and not fun for kids or ANYONE...Complete disappointment.

No sound!!. How is this going to help with sight words when you can’t hear the words to know what words to slice?!?

No sound. Can’t tell which words to slice and completely useless for learning to read.

remove this non-functioning app and refund our money. how is apple still collecting on this app when the update killed it?

Grrrr. No sound and words cut off on the sides. I want my money back !!

Dont waste your money. No sound and unable to access the parent settings. Lame- don’t waste your money

Ms. Won’t allow me to change to pre k site words

Pointless. There is absolutely nothing to this game. I have no idea how this would remotely help a child learn. What a complete waste of time.

No sound. The app has no sound making it pointless.

Not enough words. Feels incomplete.

Huh. How is this suppose to help my child read?

Worthless. Absolute waste of money and time. I should have read the reviews.

Sight words Ninja. Have fun finding sight words.

Nonfunctional sound!. Last update a year ago. They don’t care to fix it. Don’t bother

There isn't any sound. Disappointing.. The app doesn't have sound.

To easy. Only goes to third grade to easy for my kid

Sight Words Ninja. You got me with the name, but I’m sorry I paid for this app for my grandson - it’s actually boring. Just calling it “Ninja” doesn’t make it a great game. Epic fail, in my opinion.

No sound. The sound doesn’t work on the app. Wasted money.

Complete waste of $2. The game does not work well. Says the wrong word and very confusing for kids. Worst app I've ever bought.

Doesn't really teach. If you think your kid is going to learn site words from this they aren't. Totally disappointed.

Review. This app is terribly boring for my child! Don't spend your money!

Sound is spotty. Sound works about 1/4 percent of the tile

Terrible. No sound!. No sound. The app doesn’t work.

No sound. No sound

I have not been able to successfully play. Terrible don’t buy

Great app!. This is a really great app and Fun to play.🤣😁😃😎

??. There is no sound

Where is the sound?. How can I get my money back?! No sound on a sight word game? How does that work?

No sound!. App worked well on first day. After that, there was no sound.

Bad buy. There is no directions in the beginning bad buy
