Private Pilot Test Prep App Description & Overview

What is private pilot test prep app? Sporty's Study Buddy will prepare you for the FAA written test like no other study tool available with three modes of operation. Test material is expertly organized into categories based on subject matter and includes, questions, answers, correct answers, and detailed explanations.

• STUDY QUESTIONS BY TOPIC •

Learning Mode allows you to create custom review sessions by selecting exactly which categories you want to review. Each session randomly generates the question order, and provides instant feedback based on your answer selection. Each question also provides a detailed description as to why each answer is right or wrong. These explanations were developed by Sporty’s team of Master CFI’s, based on their experience preparing students for the Private Pilot certificate

• REVIEW QUESTION FLASHCARDS •

Flashcard mode tests your knowledge by allowing you to only see the question without the answer choices. After answering the question mentally, you can then select to show the correct answer, and self-grade your progress along the way. This is a great feature that keeps you from being distracted by incorrect answers!

• TAKE PRACTICE TESTS •

Test mode randomly generates a 60-question session from the entire database of published FAA test questions, simulating the real Private Pilot test. After answering all the questions, you’ll be given instant results, and have the option to review either all the questions, or just missed questions. Included in the review session are the same detailed explanations for why each answer is right or wrong.

•PROGRESS REPORTS•

After completing each test your results are saved in the app's Progress Report section, where you can review previous scores and and a detailed history of each question and answer selection. You can also pause a partially-completed session, and resume it at a later time here.

Private Pilot Test Prep Comments & Reviews 2026

Good. This app is very clean. It works very well on my tablet, but does not save my progress at all on my phone. I have to start all over again and I cant keep track like I can on my tablet. Overall a good app. Have not taken the FAA test, so cant compare the accuracy at the current time, but looks like simple questions and answers/explanation

Study Buddy is Awesome. I used study buddy to prepare for my written exam and got a 90%. I usually do nit do well on exams, but this app had me well prepared for the exam. I recommend using a device larger than a cell phone. I'm definitely going to recommend this app far and wide.

All you need for the PPL written. I read the FAA’s free PDFs of the PHAK and AFH during my flight training, then used this app to get a 93 on the written. It was almost completely spot on. I wish I knew if I could do the same for the instrument written with the instrument flying handbook and instrument procedures handbook, or if the instrument test prep app was included in a bundle.

Exactly what my aging brain needed to ace the exam. After many months of study, got a 95 on the exam today. Did about 100 practice random exams and the approach really drilled in the key concepts.

Great test prep app. I used this app on my phone and iPad in my spare time. The learning mode is excellent and the practice test mode was spot on. I passed the written with a 97% and used this app exclusively for my studies. I will definitely be using the instrument version next.

93% on first try. Must-have tool!. Just took my private pilot exam today and scored a 93%. I'm amazed at how much this app helped me prepare and highly recommend it. For $10 compared the the thousands spent on training it's a no-brainer. I'll share my studying strategy with it for anyone interested in case it helps give you ideas. It's essentially just studying the test over and over again but it definitely helped me iron out some weak areas and help me grasp certain concepts better. So, the total time between downloading the app and taking the test was about three weeks for me. The first two weeks I took the test a few times a day with a day or two off here and there to let things breath. During this time I didn't review my wrong answers as intensely as in week three but I did skip around through some of the flash card study drills. I had two scores in the high 60s early on and several high 70s. By the end of week two I was in the 80s. During the third week I only took the test portion once per day. But I started aggressively reviewing my wrong answers at this point and reworking the longer problems and taking screen shots on my phone of questions I got wrong and the correct answers to review. I consistently scored in the 90s this third week and as high as 95%. The morning of my exam I didn't take a practice test but focused on the flash card learning drills with an emphasis on questions I hadn't seen before. I hope this helps. Note that even with all this review I did see two questions I had never come across before on the actual exam. But, if you can get all the other questions correct it still puts you in the 90s. Good luck aviators!!

Great prep tool. Scored 98% in my written and this app was a major portion of my prep. Do not use this app as your primary resource, but once you’ve read your material, this app makes for a quick refresh.

Word for Word FAA Questions. As of 2022 this app has questions straight out of the ASA PPL study book. These questions are word for word used on the FAA written test, and makes it super easy to pass. I promise you, if you can go through this app and answer every question correctly, you’ll ace your FAA written exam. Doesn’t get any easier than this.

Excellent. I pass with 87 nice tool

January 2026 PASSED. Did well on the written exam. Most of these questions are VERBATIM on the exa!. Some things I would recommend studying that I didn’t see in this app are Soft/Short Field landings and gust factor! Good luck everyone!

Useful Tool to Pass FAA Private Pilot Written. Took my Private Pilot FAA Written exam today and passed with an 85% thanks to this useful app. Solely used this app to study. Went through every section about three times each and took about 30 practice tests. Probably would have gotten a 100% if I started studying more than a week out. 5 out of 5 stars.

Great app. This is a great app for preparing for the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Test. It's very convenient to use and nicely arranged. I studied this in "chunks" and was well prepared for the test. I scored a 98% so I found this to be helpful and good value. One tip is to buy the hard copy testing supplement, available with test prep books from various pilot stores. It is exactly what you will be given for the actual test and allows you to practice plotting courses, measuring distance etc. It's easier to use than the digital images on the app or on the computer screen during the actual test. A tip is you cannot mark on the supplement during the test. You will be given a transparency to lay on top and an erasable marker for the plots so it is good to practice in that manner.

Great app, couple changes needed. Overall awesome study tool. As others have said, you need to be able to have your 'flagged' questions saved so you can go over them at any time. Second, unless I'm missing something, the cross country section is basically impossible to do on your phone. The distances and course headings should be given. There's no way to measure them otherwise and you can't complete the E6B practice.

Great App. Used this, as well as a Gleim textbook as a secondary study tool. I'll credit this app to the reason I passed with a high score. A solid 2 weeks, 3 hours a day I used this app. The real test took me 40 minutes and a majority of the questions were the same you'd see on this app. Using the Instrument version now. Would highly recommend to anyone.

Pretty good app except for the test mode (same questions). I am enjoying the app and the learning mode but I get a bit frustrated with the test mode where the 60 questions are always the same, just drawn in a different sequence at each new test. It’s lame when there are more than 1,000 questions in the app. Any way to fix this and have 60 questions randomly taken from all the database at each test session?

Use this app!. Used this app in conjunction with the ASA private pilot test prep and got a 90%. I would recommend this to everyone who plans on getting their license!

Great!. I used this to pass my written for Private Pilot License. I also had other study stuff for when I was at home but being on the road traveling or finding downtime during lunch I would whip this out and review! Helped tremendously! Scored a 85 on my test too!

Great tool for review. Retired military helicopter pilot. Started private pilot training for airplane single engine land nine years after my last military helicopter flight. This program was a great refresher/review of topics I was required to know but not necessarily receiving instruction on based on my past experience. The links for the references to the answers were very helpful when I needed to dig deeper on a topic.

got an 88% on my written. i used sportys as my sole study guide and i passed with an 88%. sportys is basically an exact replica of the exact things you’ll be tested on by the faa. would recommend

Excellent source for studying. Solely used this app to study for the PAR and scored a 95%. Worth every penny!

Gets the job done!. Took my time and went through all the “learning mode” modules. Took my PAR today and got a 87. I’d advise to look at parking procedures, what to do for emergency landing procedures, and where in the traffic pattern you may encounter power-on-stalls. These things appeared on my test. Good luck everyone

Better than anything else. I love how I could study without internet access off the network. I studied all the questions in and out. Definitely recommend buying.

I passed the test and this saved me major time. You can read the book. You can go through and memorize some 800 questions. Or you can get this and go much faster plus learn more effectively. More importantly, it trains you to pass. Great app.

Horrible layout. Not worth the money.. Terrible. Just terrible.

Not updated for X and occasional crashes. Crashes after deleting a few test sessions I never finished. Not updated for iPhone X Otherwise this is an ok app 🤷‍♂️

Passed test!!. I failed the written exam the first time I took it then came across this app...I did countless amounts of practice tests and got over an 80% on all of them, then finally scheduled to retake the written exam...and passed it with a very good grade...I highly recommend this to anyone trying to pass the private pilot written exam!!

Great app!. I used this app along with many other study sources. This app was my #1 study resource. Because of this app, I scored a 97% on my written test. On the actual written test itself, I only found one question that I wasn't familiar with. Some recommendations/notes I would advice everyone is to check if the figures in the app match your actual figures book, as the figures book in the app did not match the current figures book. Lots of questions are repeated in the section, which isn't a big complaint for me because it helped me remember the question, but could be annoying for other people. If you want to be like me and score a 97% (or greater), I really recommend buying this app! Make sure you study EVERYTHING!

Passed with 87% today!!. Most of my studies were with this app. 80% sporty’s 20% FARAIM and PHAK. Once I was consistently scoring above 90% on the practice exams my instructor endorsed me and I scheduled the real exam. Many questions were close to the ones on this app. -The difficulty comes when you try to determine distance on the sectionals within the app on an iPhone screen. Also, shooting multiple radials to find a specific point. Would have been a bit easier if I had a tablet. The supplements are great though!

STUDIED ONE DAY AND PASSED THE NEXT. I legitimately studied on a Sunday and passed on a Monday. Granted I did have some background knowledge of the PAR questions before I purchased the app, but never actually studied. Got this app, did the practice exams over and over for 4 to 5 hours on Sunday and took the written at 930am on Monday, and passed!

Great app. I passed my exam today with an 82. I used this app to do the majority of my studying. It helped tremendously.

Great Prep. I used this to pass my written and it helped a lot. I had used a different online school but I needed something that can work without a connection and this helped. Only recommendations are: * Wish we had more sample test questions from the FAA. I did notice that one question from the FAA sample test is not in the study test (REIM GPS question) * Wish progress and reviews worked across devices with iCloud

Test mode crashing. Overall great app but the reason I’m giving it one star is because in the test mode I’ve had the app crash on several occasions. Nothing more frustrating than almost completing a test and losing all you progress.

Nice. Nice apps, using this easy app i finish my Written 90%

Useful and well designed- still no match for GLEIM. This app should be used as a supplement for the GLEIM book, when you don’t have the book, use this app, but otherwise, the book would be the way to go. One thing that’s nice about this app is that the explanations for each answer are easier to understand, however less technical. Overall though, much better than any other apps.

Passed my PAR exam with 93%. I used the app a lot, along with their free test prep on their website. So some reason the app kept giving me repeat questions on the test. So I supplemented my studies with their website test and used the Gleim study book. Between those three sources I had a very well grounded study guide to accompany my online ground school from Jeppesen.

Awesome study tool. This is the reason I got a 95 on my written exam. I rarely ever purchase apps, but this one was worth all the money! Don’t be a fool...buy this study tool!

Great but fix wordage. Perfect app but the medical questions have wordage wrong. It’s not 5 years later…it’s 60 calendar months per FAR/AIM etc…that got me into trouble

Huge help!. This app is GREAT! Just passed my exam with a 95%. These practice questions were very similar to the real test.

DONT BUY. DO NOT BUY. many of the questions are outdated and simply untrue and you can easily find out by fact checking through a quick google search. DO NOT BUY.

Mediocre. If you have never compared multiple private pilot study guides, then you probably think this is an excellent tool. It’s not. Not even close

Excellent. First attempt to take the ppl written exam I used a textbook and the faraim but got a 58% on my second attempt I used this app and got an 85% definitely recommend

Great for Review!. I used this app, along with the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge and Gold Seal’s Ground School and other FAA resources to get a 92% on my written! Would definitely recommend getting this app!

The GO TO App!. Spent some time on this app to prep for my written exam in 2019. This app is incredible, and scored a 97% by missing two questions. A MUST BUY!

Not many questions to look at.. There are not nearly as many questions as the ASA prepware book has. Also no ability to search for specific questions. Waste of $10.

Great Test Prep Tool!. Just took my written and scored a 95%! Easy to use! The best thing about it was that it had the question on the top when you went to use the chart or figure so you didn’t have to go back and forth looking at the question. Save function was okay, but if you didn’t answer a question it took you back to the beginning of the test. Really a pain when you are going through all 800+ questions. Overall I would recommend this over ASA’s app. Thanks Sporty’s!

Excellent Tool!!. Just got a 98% on my written. I used the Jeppeson study guide and after that exclusively studied with this app. It was so similar to the actual test! It was nice for me to have the study guide as well so I had a hard copy of the testing supplements. I’m a new mom and has to study as efficiently as possible (during nap time) and this was just perfect. Thank you Sporty’s! I’d recommend to anybody! To those still studying: remember that you have to match the map scale in the supplements and not your actual plotter! I didn’t know that when I started out and got very frustrated!

Amazing app for people with 0 knowledge.. I would give this app 6 stars if I could. I aced my written test and it was all thanks to this app alone. $15, but will be the foundation of all of your aviation careers.

Great app. Wonderful app for those who are trying to pass the Private Pilot written test... got an 92% on the test thanks to this app.. enough said!!!

Affordable Prep with Value. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on courses, studying through the question banks (Learning Mode) helped me achieve what I needed through my PPL written journey. I loved the different mode, especially with options to take simulated tests and ability to review both Learning & Test sessions I had completed. While the explanations aren’t perfect, given the price, this app is a great self-studying tool.

Loved it, thank you. I used this to help with my Test and id highly recommend it! The ability to take tests anywhere that have detailed explanations too all questions on your phone is highly useful and in my experience was a huge contribution to me passing with a 92.

Perfect. I used King Schools during my training but wanted an additional study aid on my phone. I scored in the 90s and it is because of this app. Word for word test questions. This is really only good for memorization to pass the test but that is all it is trying to be.

Amazing Test Prep. This app was absolutely amazing. I used it exclusively to study for my private written. And scored a 92%. I highly recommend it. I will definitely be using the Sportys instrument test prep for the iPad as well.

It's really good, but.... The app needs an addition that will allow missed (in test mode), or marked (in learning mode) questions to be saved for future study. Also, it would be really nice if learning mode saved your place once the app is closed, so you can continue later. Currently, progress is not saved and it's a little frustrating.

Great product. I used this and got a 92 on the exam. Great as a way to go I over each section when you are away from a computer or just have a short amount of time.

Passed!!. Passed my written today and this app was my main tool to study. Nice interface and awesome that it works on the iPad too!

Definitely worth the money. I am the kind of person who puts everything off until the last minute possible. But this actually had me studying whenever I had downtime at work and when I was just sitting around with friends. Definitely a good tool, half the the questions on here are identical to the ones on the exam.

Helpful but not great. This app had some issues, sometimes if I got an answer wrong, it would indicate I selected a different answer than I actually did. The test randomization wasn't particularly random. But all that said I did pass my actual exam, and it was certainly helpful for studying on the go.

Worth it.. I used this app almost exclusively for my test preparation and scored a 98% on the test. The one question I did miss however was not included in this version and also not in the Gleim book, so I suppose it could be a newer question. I guess the moral of the story is that if you are a perfectionist like myself this app might have a few gaps but as an overall successfully study tool it's wonderful.

Buggy. Could be very useful if it weren't for the blackout bug. When I view a figure or if my screen rotates the screen will go black and will not return unless I completely close the program (open the multi tasking menu and close out completely), thus negating all my my progress in the test or study session. Thankfully I have hard copies of all the test figures, but that defeats the purpose of a portable device for studying. Outside of that issue I think the layout is good and the flashcard mode is a nice way to test your knowledge rather than your ability to remember the questions and their answers in a multiple choice format. I would like to see interactive forms that (for example) allow you to draw lines on the maps and receive feedback on the angle and distance of that line in place of trying to use a plotter on your iPad screen. Overall, Lots of potential, but currently not very useful.

Great study aid, but needs 2012 updates!. Pros: Great for studying on the go. Waiting in line? Whip out your phone and do some studying. Waiting for the Doc? Whip it out. Lull at work? Whip it out. In the... restroom? Well you the point. Cons: Needs 2012 updates! There are changes to the FAR/AIM that need updating.

Passed the written Private Pilot exam easily!. This app was excellent to prepare for my test with. Love the different modes - Study, Flashcard and Exam Mode. 600 questions available. Pretty much all the ones that came up in my test were familiar to me. Got a great score and enjoyed studying for it. Now if anything you want to learn had such a great study tool as this app... :)

Perfect Study guide buy it!!!. This app is a great resource. I highly recommend it!!!

Awesome!. This App rocks! The questions have links directly to all the figures they reference and at the same time it offers explanations for all the right AND wrong answers. It's great because I want to ensure I actually learn the material instead of memorize the answers.

Fantastic!!! I've passed with 100%. I've use the app for preparing to the Private Pilot knowledge test! I focus most of my time in the "Learning Mode" and "Test Mode" This app it's really helpful. I've scored 100%! And I revived a Free lunch $20 from the instructor for the perfect score! I'll recommend this app to all new student pilots!

Very helpful!. Perfect for those on the go! Made an 88 and got my license yesterday!

Very helpful!. Passed my PPL written on the first try! And THIS app had a lot to do with it! Questions are good and similar to FAA written. Word of advice (which was passed on to me), I suggest taking the FAA written only when you are consistently getting 85% or better on these. Then you'll be prepared for anything on the written.

Good Test Prep App. Just passed my Private Pilot written exam yesterday! This app was the only test preparation software i used. Very effective. Very affordable.

NIce app. Nice app that gives you several options for study. Very easy to go between test question and figure.

Disappointed. I tought this app would let you pick sections or topics and test you on them. This app just gives you either a full blown test or a flashcard mode with no option of giving you multiple choice on that. I would not recommend this product to anybody studying for their private pilot's license.

This app rocks! Worth the $. I'm a horrible studier and it took a lot for me to just sit down and study a book. So, I downloaded this app and it changed everything. I could review questions on the train, in line at a restaurant, or anywhere I wanted. Very clean and easy to use as well. And it also gives explanations to the questions, my favourite part. Worth every penny. I now have the Instrument Study Buddy to assist me on my next rating.

Just aced my FAA private test. I basically spent a week with my jeppesen test guide and 2 days with nothing but this app running on my phone. Got ALL 60 questions right. The answers just spat themselves out. Great app. Next up...actual flight.

Get it!!!. Did the practice tests over and over and was placing in the low to mid 80s. Just took the test and got an 85%. Most of the questions for word for word!!! Do yourself a favor and get this.

This app is useless.. Used to kinda work. Now it crashes EVERY single time without fail, cannot use the app.

Passed but..... I would over and over take the practice test to the point where I was averaging upper 80s and lower 90s. I thought I was going to destroy the test when I got to the test sight but I was bummed out and kinda frustrated when there were a bunch of questions that I have never seen before. I scored an 82 percent, which isn't terrible, however I think I could have gotten much higher if the questions on the app were updated.

Awesome app!. This test prep app was right on the money for taking the private pilot written exam. Money well spent!!

great app. Used this app and got a 82 really helps prepare you for the test

Where are the answers?. The FAA written test is a multiple choice memorization game, which means flashcards are the best way to train for it. This app shows all the questions -- but none of the answers. Which completely misses the point of a flash card prep app, which is to get you to where you can recognize the right answer to the question. It was ten bucks wasted. Off to cut up my Jeppesen test prep book, get some glue and three-by-fives, and build my own set....

study buddy. By far the best study tool for the private pilot knowledge test. I wouldn't have passed without it. Thanks

Passed!. Mostly used this app to study for the test and passed no with no problem. Thanks Sportys. The best $10 you'll spend!

Great!. I used this app and the 2012 test prep book exclusively. The app is very easy to use. I liked the simulated test section and being able to choose specific areas to study. Very helpful. Wouldn't have gotten the book had I known about this earlier. Great job Sporty's!

Needs to update more often. This is a great app overall but I would have to recommend the ASA app over this one for the strict fact that they stay up to date on the latest FAA questions.

Awesome!. This app is great! I can't stop using it. It's real simple and so easy to use. Makes me want to study. Safe flying!

Great App!. Used Study Buddy as my main study tool and got a 95% on the written exam.

Great study tool. This was my primary study tool, and did a great job of preparing me for the written. I saw many, if not all, the same questions on the actual test. It was super convenient having this on my phone - nice to be able to pop it open whenever I had a few minutes. As other reviewers have mentioned, a great enhancement would be a way to save missed questions in between sessions. Otherwise, terrific app.

Great!. Used this for my PPL written prep. Scored a 95. Awesome. Now using the instrument study prep.

Passed first try. This app was great! For a few weeks I would take a couple tests a day. I was averaging high 80's low 90's, ended up getting an 87! More than happy!

Very good app. I reccommend it for any student pilot helped me alot 57D ray

The best study app!. I was using the Gleim study software and only scoring in the high 70s and low 80s. I started using this app and after only 2 weeks, I scored a 94 on my FAA written. This is well worth the money!

Must Have - no regrets. I used this for about two weeks before taking the written and passed easily. Only a few questions on actual test were not in the ap. Get This Ap! Thanks Sportys for another great product.

Worked for me!!. This app is a great supplement to written test prep books. It helped me score a 93 on my test. Well worth the money!!

Great Study Tool.. This app is very organized and very easy to use. It helped me pass my Private written. It's a great tool to study while on the go too. Highly recommend it!

Best 10 dollars I've ever spent!. Just passed the written yesterday with ease. A lot of the questions I encountered were the exact same word for word on this app! This app is worth more than 10 dollars!

A MUST HAVE TOOL!. This was a huge help in my FAA test prep! 95%! Having it available on the iPhone and iPad made drill and review so handy. I do recommend you download & print the figures from the FAA site for a real sit down test-like study session so you don't have to toggle back and forth but as a day to day study aid-A+! 10 bux well invested - I'll be back for Instrument- Thanks Sporty!

App is ok. App is okish. Looks like it was designed when windows 98 was a thing... best suggestion is not to buy from this store. Awful experiences all around.

Absolutely Fantastic. The app is a great way to practice test questions that are exactly like the questions on the actual test. There are over 700 practice questions, and they have full explanations with solutions. It's by far the easiest way to study and ensure a passing grade.

Not what I expected from Sporty's.. My major issue with this software is how limited the user options are; for example, what if I want to practice by choosing 30 random questions in three subject areas? No deal. Sorry, but I dont always have time TO GO THROUGH 700 QUESTIONS. Come on Sporty's. I can get better practice online for free.

Almost Perfect. This app was my crutch while studying for my private pilot written exam. It had everything I needed to study on the go. My only suggestion would be an option to save marked questions in particular a sections or save your place in a practice test.

Answer to the question: Where are the answers?. The way that the app is set up, on the "learning mode"all the answers and explanations for the right and wrong answers are listed in a pop up multiple choice quiz. The Flash card section is a bonus section that makes you "recall" the answer instead of recognize the answer. These are the exact same questions (word for word) as in the learning "mode" section. You can use the learning section as flash cards if you want to. The questions are all organized by topic and are very easy to find the answer if you can not recall the answer with a good explanation.

Aced my exam!. This is pretty much the only written test prep I used and I aced the real test. If you can pass the practice tests on here, you can pass the actual exam. Highly recommended!!!!!
