The ATO app can automatically send usage data to help improve the app. The data we collect doesn’t identify you and you can choose to turn this off at any time in your app’s settings.
GPS can be used to record trips in myDeductions. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
To record a trip in myDeductions using the GPS option, the app needs access to your device location.

Horrific. I spent hours adding deductions and searching through statements getting ready to lodge. I log back in to finish my return, and no info is saved. I assume it was my fault, so I do it all over again. Nope, the app has now TWICE deleted my nearly complete tax return. I am running out of spare hours to get my simple taxes done. Do not download this app!!! Unless you have very simple and quick taxes, it will not work for more than a few hours before it deletes everything you saved.
Use it as a dumb filing cabinet only!. This app works fine if you don’t log on and just use it to keep your records (photo of receipt and aide-memoire for what the expense was for. Anything more complicated or, god forbid, using it to actually help doing your tax return, is just too risky!
Multi device sync. Been using the ato app for a few years and think it works well. But would love to be able to have the info sync so i can use both iphone and ipad so i dont have to use just obe device all year
Have to log out to find my deductions. Logging in should provide access to additional functionality, not less. Please make the functions available when logged out also available when logged in.
Great Improvement. Huge upgrade from the previous version!
App keeps closing!. Normally I’d give the app a higher rating, but it currently keeps closing when I’m trying to scroll back to check that I’ve included all expenses for the previous financial year without any double-ups. Can’t even attempt tax without this information. The app currently needs a few bug fixes.
Very useful app but app crashes sometimes. Very useful app for tax deduction purpose. However, every time I try to click and see the previous record of kilometers, the app just crashes. Hope this can be fixed soon.
Can’t login to updated version. Was made to update to the latest version (app wouldn’t let me in otherwise) and it now “can’t verify my identity”. Used the app no problem before the update. The only way the app will allow resolution is to call the ATO in business hours. Yeah, because I have time to be on hold at work for an hour. Was literally going to do my taxes this weekend. Not happening now!
Useful app but bug in latest release. I’ve been used the app regularly for the last couple of years. The functionality is very useful for my business. However, there seems to be a bug in the latest update. When I go into the lowest level (detail) view for expenses and kilometres, the app crashes and closes.
Room for improvement. The look and feel of the new app is great. It will be interesting to test at the end of the financial year. One thing I think would be handy is if the Deductions Tab is also visible at the bottom after logging in to the app instead of trying to find it in the more section or perhaps include it in Employment? This would probably make better sense?
Forcing you to update OS to use the app, even if you can’t.. So I guess unlike major retailers and other app developers that still are able to allow older OS users to have an update or use the last usable version of the app with that OS, you are leaving people like us who can’t or don’t want to go through wasting more money on upgrading our working phones just because it is a fashionable thing, my elderly working parents now also unable to access their app or upgrade their phone due to the small storage apace it came with. So at this point, will have to stop using phones with apps, back to old school computers and phones, webpages, and emails. Was nice while it lasted seeing how our tax money is spent more on developing other countries and not paying attention to our people and their needs.
Love the app. Love the app makes life easy when trying to keep my business organised especially being able to upload receipts that I’ll possibly loose. However I pay myself a wage from the business is there anyway to categorise a wage. It won’t let me pop it in expense without making it claimable and obviously I don’t want to claim anything from paying myself . Thank you in advance
Change back to old layout!. This new update got rid of the “descriptions” in the overview expense summary. In order to see what your expenses are related to, you now need to click into each individual log to see the description of the expense. This makes tracking expenses harder and much, much more time consuming. It was effortless tracking before, but now it’s just not worth using :(
Not Bad. I have very little faith on pretty much all government apps, not just Australian. However, this one is not bad. At least, its simple and straightforward. And it gets the job done. I would give it a four star. But since it’s a gov app, I give a five.
Frustrating. The ATO along with MyGov and MyGov ID make up an unholy trinity of poorly configured apps, the developers obviously are not reading the feedback. If you are an Australian citizen who has always lived at the same address and has kept one phone number it possibly works ok. If you don’t have an au passport, move house, change jobs / phone numbers be prepared for hours of fruitless pain. Whilst recovering from Covid I thought I would have another go at setting up my account. I came to an 2 secrets that you share with the ATO page, my super provider could have been one, and the other my bank account, although I have changed banks but I was hopeful of getting progress. Don’t worry ATO app designers have addressed that problem, when you get to this page on a mobile device the keyboard is oriented landscape not portrait, and if you turn your device to landscape the text boxes move out of the way so don’t bother trying to enter data in the same place. Poor quality products like these are why so many are not claiming there rebates, they are more likely to be immigrants who have had to change addresses and jobs more often. I will be forced to do my return on paper this year because of this app and the other myGov offerings that support it.
Addition to app. I would like to see working from home added. It would be nice to be able to select date and enter Numbet hours worked.
It’s too basic and crashes. It is now crashing, when I select “share via email” to get the csv file for 22/23 it says “preparing data” and then the app completely crashes and exits out. It’s ok but it’s too basic. When I go to do my BAS there is no way to see only expenses that incurred GST, it just shows you the total expenses of the month so it is difficult as you have to tally each expense one by one and make sure if it has GST or not.
Great idea, not executed very well.. I’m wanting to add my deductions such as Union fees from 21-22 as I don’t receive the final invoice via email until after July 1, but when I enter it under the scroll bar for 21-22, it automatically uploads to 22-23! I’ve not lodged my 21-22 tax return yet, so would be helpful to be able to add deductions for past financial years too. Would especially help those who haven’t lodged multiple returns too. Please fix this. Would be an A+ app otherwise. (For my needs at least).
Useful app but the new changes aren’t as easy. The new version of the app makes it a lot harder to add a deduction. It was much better when my deductions were on the Home Screen. Would love to see this change come back, the new features are great but when the main purpose is to log deductions this is frustrating
Can't use app. When you log in via the app an error message pops up. Then when you click on troubleshoot it takes you the ato website. It tells you that this error is known and it is being rectified. Its been more than 6 months now and still not fixed!
Sexy and functional. The first thing that I noticed about the app is that it’s rather sexy and sleek, but functionality seems to be good also.
Easy to use. Love this. I’ve been using it for a few years now. It makes it so easy to keep all your tax stuff in one place. Then to be able to load it right into the ATO website is even better!
Hard to find my deductions. I was logged in and looking everywhere for my deductions, and discovered lots of interesting stuff but no luck. I can only fond the link when logged out. I normally love the ATO products but disappointed in this upgrade - surely easy access to my deductions came up in your user research. I haven’t had a go uploading my receipt yet - bracing myself…
Fix is not a fix. The app crashes when reviewing historical deductions. The developer response to enlarge and scroll photos isn’t an acceptable fix as it’s time consuming and doesn’t give an overview of all the pages. This is basic functionality and needs to be fixed ASAP. Also, my accountant says she can’t see the uploaded expenses on the ATO website and I have to send the document to her manually which again is unnecessary and inconvenient. Potentially good app but big problems that need addressing urgently.
Login flow broken. The app fails to finish the authentication flow in the embedded web browser. Tried many times but I just get an infinite spinner telling me I will be redirected to the taxation office. Yeah right. Terrible software. Update: must have been their server being down at the time. That does not excuse the very poor error flow.
2 hour phone call to unlock the app for 2 hours. This is the first negative review I have ever written and honestly it is deserved. The app doesn’t allow me to sign in yet instructs me to call the ato and be on hold for 2 hours. The app then only is unlocked for 48 hours before I have to repeat the process all over again. I am not someone who has been a victim of a data breach and I am worried during tax time this is going to be an extremely irritating process with even longer waiting times. All I wanted to do was fill in certain deductions. I will stick to my excel spreadsheet from now on.
Feedback. I have been using the app but the frustration is that when I want to email a report the app says I do not have email set up. This is not correct as I have email on my phone. Am I missing something or is this something that the App should be doing? Also what is the point of taking pictures of invoices if the pictures cannot be downloaded to present to the accountant?
Good app. I feel like this app is convenient for me. When I bought something relating to work, I took less than one minute to record my tax deduction. I love to take a photo of the receipts. For workshops or causal work, I don’t need to carry my logbook for writing how many kilometers I drive there. Thank you for making my life easier.
Good app, but needs work. Overall a very useful app especially for recording deductions so they’re all ready at tax time! There are problems adding vehicle trips though. Adding a vehicle is fine but this version no longer gives the option of adding a trip - ATO website instructions only refer to an old version of the app.
Really useful app. Used it for my tax return for the first time this year and was really easy to use. Handy to check how my return was progressing. I regularly use myDeductions. One bit of feedback, it would be handy to be able to automatically backup myDeductions records.
Intuitive and quick to use. From the Touch ID to being able to easily access my tax return, lodgements and payments, this is a polished and useful app. myGov’s digital services are improving out of sight and making a lot of previously daunting tasks - like completing tax returns - easy for the layman.
Great to track work deductions in real time. I have used this now for the last three years and found it super useful to track work related expenditure. Ease at which I can take photos of receipts and allocate costs immediately is super useful. Uploading to my tax return each year has been effortless. I have recommended this app to lots of friends as a result. Best things about this app is that it’s FREE!
Horrible App. Randomly says it cant verify my ID, provides me the ATO number I need to call, the computer generator automatically rejects my call as its not a phone worth matter apparently ? So I have no right to log on? Despite. Verifying through every government platform, FACE ID Utilized for the past several months, all of a sudden Im a ghost ? Horrible platform, horrible service
Update has really decreased ease of use. This was a great tool to manage deductions through the year, but now they’ve buried the most handy function deep within the menus where you wouldn’t look to find it!? I would rather easy access to the deductions that I use frequently, rather than looking up your last lodgement which I might use once a year? Seems silly to me 🤷🏻♂️
Improved appearance but requires constant sign in.. This latest update has made sign in required more frequently but overall is a much better looking app.
Great for staying organised on-the-go. It makes a lot of sense for someone who already predominantly pays most of their bills using apps on their smart phone. It’s great to be able to upload receipts on-the-go & file them for review later and in just one click all your documentation is ready for you at tax time.
Needs more functions. Be able to send invoices and then record them as paid so it can show as income when doing your tax return. This would be an awesome feature. Mileage using GPS would be awesome.
Excellent tool. When I first downloaded the app about a year ago, there was no much I could do with it. I didn’t particularly use myDeductions so there was nothing else I would use within the app. This new version is full of new features, and one of favorite features is the ability to use faceID to login and not used the myGov process which takes up to 3 steps. I can now see my employment and tax return progress. Amazing work!
Feedback. I use it every year and it Very useful and clear about what I can claim and links to the updates of changes on what is claimable. Thanks
Uploading pdf invoices unavailable.. I have receipts but I also receive pdf invoices. I can take screenshots but the 3image limit is restrictive. I would like to see more images upload limit and other file type options to upload such as pdf
Beware the ATO. The functionality of the app is fine, until the ATO decide to audit you. The app won’t let you export images of any receipts you have uploaded into the app. The ATO docked me $7000 of legitimate deductions because I couldn’t substantiate the expenditure BECAUSE THE ONLY RECORD I HAD WAS THE PHOTOS OF THE RECEIPTS UPLOADED INTO THE ATO APP. (Appeal lodged). So if you’re going to use the app to ‘go paperless’ and upload digital images, you’ll still need to keep the originals in a shoebox (which you’ll have to scan and email to the ATO if you get audited!). Seems like a sneaky way for the ATO to trick you. If keeping records in their own app doesn’t meet their standards they should tell you that up front.
Fantastic ATO app!. The recent update to the ATO app is fantastic, super simple and clear, the UX is very visually appealing. They also introduced some new features, really useful to check my income statements, the status of my lodgement and even my super.
Passkey not working. Received an SMS regarding checking something ATO related. I attempted to sign into the ATO app however I was asked to sign in again (note when I did this last time I used PassKey). Used PassKey again, app doesn’t allow me to sign in as stated the PassKey option wasn’t ’a strong enough option’ and asks me to sign in again. What’s the point of supporting PassKey if I can’t use PassKey? I have disabled all other methods of log in. The Digital ID option won’t work either, and you can’t remove yourself from the app unless you either revoke the device or delete the app and try again.
Where is My Deductions?. Did you remove the My Deductions feature? It seems to no longer be available and it was one of the best features. Pretty useless without it other than checking balances on the fly, which honestly how often do we need to do that? Please bring it back.
Great work. The difference between this app and the old app is night and day. Great work to everyone involved in getting this made. Love all the new features!
Face ID Authentication not working. Used Face ID to login up till previous version , this version is not allowing me login , every time throwing a linq error Update : issue got fixed in latest release , Thanks for prompt action .
Warning! Back up before updating!. I have loved using this app, with the ease of logging my deductions as I go so it is all there ready to go at tax time. Unfortunately, I updated today and didn’t back up before hand, so now my 21/22 deductions are gone! Would have been nice to be warned. Not happy I will have to track and enter it all again!
My deduction feature. Decided to give the app a go this year but the expense claims sit in the incomplete section. Doesn’t give a reason why it’s incomplete. Also it always ask for you to add a car, I’ve even when the app has each of the same cars your added in the my vehicle section. Quite disappointed. App is updated to the latest software on iphone
New update will not load.. My current iPhone 6+ will not accept new update. It is currently running iOS 12.5.4 The same happens on my iPad running iOS 12.5.4. The download loads about 70% of the data on both devices, but then reverts to the update mode. I have tried numerous times on both devices to no avail. On my iPhone 11 running iOS 14.7.1 the update loaded with no problems. Hope this helps.
Improvement: Add support for OSfB and all communication. Improve the app by adding support for Online Services for Business and having this app as the communication channel instead of the MyGov inbox. So many taxpayers miss payments or important communication’s because there is not an effective secure digital channel to interact with the tax office for all of a taxpayer’s circumstances. Allow taxpayers to see their business, personal and smsf obligations in one place instead of a myriad of different portals. Instead of directing communications to the MyGov channel, communicate with all taxpayers directly via the ATO app.
