Splitwise Comments & Reviews 2026

Used for 3 years…Now I’m fed up. The recent update that limits the amount of expenses you can log is ridiculous. I can understand locking receipt scanning and analytics behind a paywall. I could maybe even tolerate the 10 second wait times between logging new expenses. However, only allowing 3 expenses a day before having to pay $40 a year per person just to add as many as you want is pure highway robbery. Your base service is not worth $40 a year. I can replace it with like 20 different apps or Excel for free, and my only annoyance would be the setup time and time lost inviting all my roommates to a new app, which they will gladly join if it means not having to shell out to a scummy company. At the end of this month, I’m done with this app and everyone else should be too. Stop the subscription price gouging garbage for something that should be $10 a year AT MOST with a good free option. I get that app development and hosting isn’t free. But it’s not $40 from all your users every year expensive either. Especially when your “unique” product could be cloned in a month by any sophomore CS student at any university on the planet.

Used to be great…. I used this app multiple times on different trips and loved it. It was such a simple and easy way to keep track of who paid for what, who owes what, etc. during a trip. I hadn’t used it for a while as I didn’t have the need, but recently went on a trip with a group of friend and recommended we all use this app to keep track of our expenses. You can imagine my SHOCK and HORROR when i found out you now can only submit 4 expenses a day! I can live with the annoying ad you have to watch, but only allowing 4 expenses a day is ABSURD! This app went from being useful to TRASH. Now I have to go find a new app (competitor) that lets me do what I used to be able to do for free. Super annoying and VERY POOR business decision on their part. I understand monetization and I fully support them having a Pro version with more advanced features. But unfortunately they’ve now made the free version virtually unusable. If you’re in the market for a free app to easily manage shared expenses between friends, look elsewhere.

Disgusting monetization practices. I’ve used splitwise for YEARS for group trips and splitting expenses with roommates. They’ve now limited the amount of expenses you can submit per day to only 4 per day, and they force you to you stare at their subscribe screen for 10 seconds before they even let you add an expense. Literally fire the Product Manager who suggested this. I understand that Splitwise is a company that’s been around for a while and now needs to monetize, but this is not the way. I’m now looking for a different app to use to settle up my most recent trip since we all want to pay each other back asap (we have to pay our credit card bills) but it would take us over a week to input all of our expenses with Splitwise’s daily limits. I have 30 expenses to add that I couldn’t add on the trip because I didn’t have wifi. With the 4 expense per day limit, it would take me 8 days to add them all. Ridiculous. Splitwise, change this immediately. At least give us the decency of a limit of 10 or something. 4/day is a slap in the face to your long time users.

You used to be somewhat handy - now it’s trash. Some brainiac in product management thinks that he or she can goad you into signing up for the so called premium features by limiting the number of transactions you can enter in one day and showing these stupid 10 second pauses between transactions that you enter. So instead of adding features that are compelling enough to actually pay for the premium version, they figure that they will down grade the free version and make you pay for the features that you previously had. Brilliant. This is an app that already has a rudimentary and sometimes confusing UI/UX that hasn’t been updated in years. Sounds like they don’t have a product strategy, a clear product roadmap or a way to monetize this product, which means that it’s days are numbered. Will find a different solution. In the meantime, We will use a simple Google sheet that does the same calculations instead.

Glitchy and Not Intuitive. This is a great concept, and inputting charges is easy enough, but it’s not easy to find what charges are assigned to you. And when trying to make a withdrawal, the app successfully to connected to my bank on attempts multiple, and then on the final step of the process I got an error message saying there were no connected funding sources. This was wildly frustrating as I have used plaid to connect to my bank before and I’ve never had an issue. I was not able to make a withdrawal from this app without paying the expedited fee. Any time I tried to connect to my funding sources without paying the fee, I got an error message, but of course, when I tried (using the same funding sources) after selecting to make a withdrawal but to pay the expedited fee, it worked miraculously. I’m sure it was a glitch in the app but it truly felt like a scam.

Favorite App. One of my favorite apps, but a couple of things. Highly disappointed with the new free version feature where there is a delay in adding expense for 10 or more seconds to get you to buy paid version. You are better then that! I would pay for a perpetual version 4.99 or something but a subscription is ridiculous. Think of a different business model. Also, the pay via Venmo is not very functional. It assumes you use the same email as your Venmo as you do for you Splitwise. Anytime someone uses this feature the money gets lost and doesn’t go to the right account. I suggest changing it to be able to lookup user and actually see their picture to reduce the likelihood of error. I would give the app 5 stars, but the new wait feature for the free version makes me drop it down to 3.

Great way to split costs!. I don’t pay for premium, but I love that it will split everything equally for free! The “simplify debts” feature is cool, too. My husband, sister, and brother-in-law go out together all the time, and this makes it so we don’t have to pay each other back every time. We just see who is behind in our group, and that person pays for the next meal/event :) we have yet to “settle up” in the past 3 years, and just keep rotating who pays so it stays relatively close. Love it! We also use it for trips with other people, we have told so many people about splitwise! I just set up a group for a trip to Puerto Rico with our best friends. We can add the rental car cost, hotel costs, meals, etc. never have to awkwardly ask a waiter to split a check again!

Used to be Great. I used to LOVE this app! I’ve used it for years between different groups of roommates I’ve lived with, and to manage personal expenses with my partner. I love the interface of the app, how easy it is to use, and the different options for dividing expenses. That all changed today. I opened the app today to add in my expenses for a couple recent grocery shopping trips for my roommates and each time I wanted to add an expense I had to wait for ad to play, which was new and annoying, but I dealt with it. Then after I added 4 (just 4!) expenses I was met with a pop-up saying that I had reached the maximum number of expenses I could input today and I had to either upgrade to the pro version or wait until tomorrow to input more. I commonly put in 10 or 15 expenses all at once so I only have to do money management once or twice a month. There is nothing in the pro version of this app that I will use and it’s not worth the money just to be able to add my expenses when just a month ago I could add as many as I wanted to for free; which is why I specifically downloaded this app, as a free way to manage expenses with my roommates and partner. I will be deleting the app today and switching to a different app that allows me to do the same things Splitwise used to do for free.

Taking away free features. I’m someone who goes through finances once a month. I review all my transaction in all my accounts to check for accuracy and to monitor spending habits. I use that same time each month to enter receipts in Splitwise. This has worked out fine, until a couple weeks ago when Splitwise added a limit to how many receipts a user can enter each day. Now I can only enter four receipts at a time without paying $5/month. The app is now completely useless to me. This tactic isn’t new for app developers. When apps become moderately successful, they slowly remove all utility from their free versions in favor of pro versions. It’s a bait and switch, plain and simple. LastPass did the same thing, which drove away a chunk of their user base. Splitwise will be “wise” to rethink their approach for the future. I’ll be deleting my Splitwise account in favor of an Excel spreadsheet. Is the UI less appealing? Will the process be slightly more difficult? Will I be urging friends to abandon the app every chance I get? Yes, yes and absolutely.

New features are buggy at best or actively blocking at worse. I haven’t used Splitwise for a few months but upon return found a few new features. The daily limits were a bit annoying but understandable. But the new Splitwise pay is actively blocking my ability to receive money, defeating the primary purpose of the app. Previously, I had my Venmo connected and my friends and I could seamlessly send and receive money. Now with the introduction of this new Splitwise pay, I actually cannot do that anymore. The reason being, you need to verify your phone number to enable Splitwise pay. I have been trying my to verify my phone for the past 30 minutes and Splitwise never sends the verification text. This is absurd for this feature to have been released with such a glaring bug. Either this is a temporary outage of the SMS service, which is still poor service given how long this is dialing for, or this is actively a huge product bug which should be immediately addressed. I’ve only had good experiences with the app previously but after my recent experience, that has changed.

Does not include new group members to existing expenses!?. I’d like to give this app a better review but I’m surprised at the limitations it has for obvious needs. Also that certain functions used to be part of the free app are now behind a paywall that is exorbitantly overpriced. The biggest limitation is when a group has been created and expenses have been added, any new member added to the group is NOT automatically included in the existing expense. I threw a weekend party with 20 people and many of us bought groceries and alcohol to use over the two days. I created a Party group and started adding members. Also we started adding our expenses. After the party I needed to track down all the attendees and add them to the group. But those I added after my expense had been listed were not added to the expense split. The app says to fix this I need to delete the expense and recreate it after everyone is in the group.

Disappointed In Surprise Pay to Play. I have loved splitwise and used it for years. However, I was disappointed in the new year by the surprise transition of splitwise pro without any kind of heads up by the company and for a new need to pay for a service that had previously been free. We have switched over to tricount, and while not as intuitive as splitwise, it gets the job done for free. If splitwise wanted or needed to add a subscription to your base app, you should not retract a previously free service. In my opinion, the additional benefits of pro are not worth the money and the free version transaction limit seems unnecessary. Use adds if you need to make more money. Overall, I might have paid for the pro version if the company hadnt sprung it on us. It seems disingenuous to a previously very loyal consumer base. I don’t see the need to pay for splitwise when there are other apps that do essentially the same thing for free.

Used to be great, please change!. I have used this app religiously for 5+ years, living with multiple different groups of roommates, going on roadtrips, with shared family expenses, etc. If nothing had changed this would be undoubtedly a glowing 5 star review… However, with the update several months ago to limit daily split bills to 3, the functionality of the app is completely taken away. Very frequently, I will put more than 3 things in here in a day, and the beauty of the app used to be that multiple things could all be added and everything would be simplified with who owes what. Now I have to go out of my way to make sure I combine receipts together to avoid hitting the limit, completely defeating the purpose of the app. Additionally, the 10 second waiting period just telling me to pay for “pro” is ridiculous. That space could be used for an ad to create a revenue instead of needing “pro” level. I know that a revenue must be made somehow, and I would gladly be willing to pay a one time $5 or $10 fee for this app, but it is definitely not an app that I (or hardly anyone) would be willing to pay a $5 monthly subscription for. And currently that is the only way to access what used to be the normal functionality of the app. You are already starting to lose your loyal customers. Please make a change before it is too late and this app is no longer a viable option for anyone!

What a nightmare. Completely counterintuitive dumpster fire of an app that is supposed to make communal payments for group events simplified. Instead I’m capped at 5 submissions a day and then demanded to sign up for PRO or wait 24 hours to get the rest of my requests out because I guess regular splitwise can only handle SO MUCH. We have that in common I guess. Next I’m graciously offered the ability to make requests in every currency in the universe, but wait… I need to get PRO to convert requests before paying them. I guess Ill call my local bank and get the market exchange rates for that day to convert every single entry I already made into USD? Perfect! I love wasting my time. And the grande finale is IF you have the audacity to settle up promptly to pay back your friends you may accidentally RUIN everyone else’s requests that may not have been submitted. But don’t worry this only happens SOMETIMES. The one and only positive is that because “BUGS” it can no longer link payment through Venmo, which is its own very special disaster, that only ever wants me to open a crypto credit card. CANNOT wait to delete this app once I’m “settled up.” It’ll only take about 3 more weeks for everyone to be able to submitted their 5 request a day.

Not a good app anymore. This app was my favorite application, I used to have running totals of things due with friends, for trips, etc. Everything changed when the developers decided to make the features accessible to only pro members. I understand the need to capitalize and make money but this was truly a horrible idea. All of my friends refuse to use the app now and are looking for the next alternative. Having the cap for 4-5 transactions a day is useless and I truly cannot understand why the application would alienate its members like this. There was a huge user base that they could’ve made money off of just by introducing apps and a paid version to get rid of apps on a lifetime yearly and monthly basis. Terrible marketing and zero sense for business development. I hope this app withers away because of how much time it has wasted in my life recently.

Started Charging for Basic Features. I’ve been a Splitwise user for nearly as long as it has been in existence. I use it to divide finances and bills between myself and my partner. Recently, they began charging an absurd about to “subscribe” to their service, which had previously all been free. So they imposed a strict shutoff of access to multiple submissions per day, making it so that without a paid subscription you can only add 3 expenses per day or week (some ridiculously restrictive time period), meanwhile I had been using it just fine with no restrictions to sum up monthly home and grocery bills only a few days before that. The restriction came in very suddenly. I understand they are trying to monetize, but they need to find another way to make a profit without charging users directly for the extremely simple services. I doubt this will happen though, so I am awaiting a knockoff version from the army of willing and annoyed Redditors, some of whom have dev/engineering experience, who are going to build their own version.

Great app! But my friends can’t handle the minimize transactions setting.. I recently tried Splitwise for the first time for a trip with a group of friends. Some friends wouldn’t log into Splitwise. Some friends wouldn’t check their emails. And a couple of friends couldn’t understand how everyone could be settled up if they didn’t pay back the person who originally paid for a specific item. Guys, Splitwise tells you how to settle up to reduce transactions so that everyone comes out the same. Minds were blown. I could literally sense that smoke was about to come out of their ears. Of course, it would have helped if they logged into the app, or checked their email or paid attention by the 2nd or 3rd or 5th time I told them, “Guys, open Splitwise! It literally breaks it all down for you!” Minimum transactions are not for the faint of heart. Bottom line: Splitwise is great! But after that trip, I may have lost a little bit of faith in the human race.

Very useful. Myself and my roommates have used Splitwise for years to keep track of splitting utility and other costs. It’s been very helpful. It’s a little uncomfortable putting all that detailed info into an app and I’m not totally sure how much they analyze it/mine it for data, which is why the 4 stars. I should look more into their privacy policies but I’m guessing they analyze it as much as they want for their own business purposes. Also, it would be neat if they had some kind of graph so you could see how much the group or you are spending on different categories over time. All in all, though, keeping it simple and uncluttered is probably the best approach. It’s also useful because it links with Venmo and Paypal or you can record a “cash” payment between you and someone else.

Expense limits make the app unusable. I’ve been a dedicated Splitwise user for years. I only need the basic features in my day to day, but I’ll upgrade to Splitwise Pro from time to time when I need the added firepower (e.g., traveling across multiple countries, when the currency conversion feature is a HUGE help). However, Splitwise recently introduced limits where I can only add 2-3 transactions per day unless I pay for the upgrade to Pro. This makes the app totally impractical to use for its basic function: recording expenses. Rather than pay every month to make it work again, I plan to find one of the many, many other apps that do the same exact thing and download one of those instead. It’s a shame, because before today I would have given Splitwise 5 stars (I’ve been a big advocate and converted several of my friends to using it in the past), but as it is now it’s completely unusable.

Splitwise saves friendships!. No more bickering about who owes what to whom! Just use this simple to use app and get on sharing the good times with friends and family, knowing you’ll each pay your fair share at the end of the day. It’s very simple to use, allowing you to enter expenses incurred by just part of a group, or allocating expenses for kids to the parents, etc. etc. in these hard times we all need to watch where our money goes but without being unfair to anyone (including ourselves!). This app does all the hard slog for you, and makes sure if there are any questions as to where did the money go that all the information is right there! Great app- we always use it when we’re out with friends out on vacation in a group!

Best App 1st time it was so good I’m rating it. My friends and I went on a trip to France. We used the app. it exceeded our expectations. It is very easy to split expenses and adjust for personal increases. It allowed all of us to not worry about evening out bills and instead to take turns paying so that at the end of the trip we were almost all settled app. The app is very flexible in that it allows you to split costs between which ever group members have incurred the cost and it allows you to adjust the splits if necessary. For example, if one person’s share was $20 more than the others the app will account for that. It was also great to chose the currency. Since we where in France we used euros. Really great app even the non tech group members liked it.

LOVE Splitwise. This is the MOST convenient app for dividing payments amongst multiple people or groups. I’ve used this app twice now while traveling internationally, and it’s never been so easy to record and remit debts on the go. My favorite part is that the app tallies up what everyone owes each other, and at the end of the trip when you’re ready to settle up, it does all the math for you in order to reduce the amount of transactions going back and forth. So easy. Upgrading to Pro, so you can convert currency with one click, amongst other perks, is definitely worth the upgrade. Especially if you frequently travel internationally with others. It’s not really necessary if you don’t leave the states though in my opinion. I can’t recommend Splitwise enough!! And this is coming from someone who very much dislikes unnecessary smart phone apps.

Now useless without paying. Really disappointed that Splitwise has decided to put most of their features behind a paywall. I get asking for subscriptions for more premium actions like reporting and maybe even currency conversions, but now they won’t even let you add more than 2 transactions in the same day unless you buy “Pro”. Their entire value proposition as an app is that people can easily add and split their expenses, limiting to 2 per day seems totally arbitrary and makes the free version useless. I’d honestly rather go back to spreadsheets for tracking household expenses with my partner than pay $5 a month just to enter 3 expenses in a day instead of 2. Didn’t even get to see what else they’ve pay-gated because I hit the new entry limit and gave up so quickly. I expect there are still options out there that aren’t so stingy on their Free version features. If not, Google Sheets it is. I used to rely on this app quite a lot and found it helpful for households and group trips, but now I can’t imagine why anyone would pay for such basic features. Seems like a cash grab where they didn’t consider customer impact or interests at all.

App has gone downhill. My wife and I have used splitwise to track expenses for probably about 8 years now. A few months back I started getting huge interstitial ads upselling the “pro” paid version (which was annoying, but fine given that it’s otherwise free). Suddenly today I find that basic app functionality has now been buried behind a paywall, and after adding a couple expenses I’ve been told I’ve reached the limit of free entries and have to pay to add more today. I’m all for supporting the developers of this app and would be willing to upgrade if there was a family plan available, however $40/yr per person is a steep ask for the functionality this app offers, and suddenly revoking basic functionality is a really shady way to conduct business. Shame on the developers for continually degrading service in an attempt to squeeze money out of their users.

Gone downhill in recent years. TL;DR See end of review for a better alternative. This app used to be great, but I haven’t used it in a few years. Picked it back up for a road trip and found that it now bombards you with (timed) ads for premium. I wouldn’t mind dropping $0.99 on it or what have you for the week I’m going to use it, but let’s be real: a decent spreadsheet on any platform with collaboration offers essentially the same value. So, Splitwise has apparently gone the route many apps have of trying to justify the higher price with additional “value” by adding unnecessary features to the premium subscription like bank sync. I don’t want all that: I just want an app that offers an easier UI than the aforementioned spreadsheet. But roping me into a subscription for that essentially offline functionality leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I recommend Splittr as a more reasonable alternative from an indie developer. You can use it entirely free and offline, or you can buy a 1-month “pass” rather than being roped into a subscription you have to cancel. They have reasonably-priced long term options at the time of writing, as well.

For meals, promises a lot, delivers on little. When using this app on my phone, anytime I switch over to my calculator app to crunch some numbers, it closes out of an expense I’m working on. This drives me 100% absolutely nuts because there’s no way to save a draft, your progress, nothing. I had to redo one expense 4 times. That aside, it took me 15 minutes to figure out how to split a simple lunch bill among four people because (1) the UX is a real problem; (2) what in this good Earth is this “shares” feature that has little to no use in real life because no restaurant designs their menus this way and nobody orders this way; (3) not enough development is put into the dollar amount entry feature and why does it give me so many problems about the sum not adding up when I clearly know that it doesn’t and am trying to fix the issue but the app won’t let me leave without deleting everything… I literally needed to find out what the tax rate was for certain restaurants (ones that charge hidden taxes, a fight for another day) and it wouldn’t let me do that without restarting completely. I literally would rather pull out all my hair and an abacus than deal with this app another time and any friend of mine who suggests using this app is disinvited to future hangouts until they learn the error of their ways or this app fixes its problems.

It's the time to search another App. I used to LOVE this app! I've used it for years. I commonly put in 10 or 15 expenses all at once so l only have to do money management once or twice a month. There is nothing in the pro version of this app that I will use and it's not worth the money just to be able to add my expenses when just a month ago l could add as many as I wanted to for free; which is why I specifically downloaded this app, as a free way to manage expenses with my roommates and partner. If this doesn't get fixed i and many other will roll over to some other app soon.

Disingenuous - Would rather just use a spreadsheet. I had never used splitwise before but had seen it on other people's venmo feeds before. After using it for the first time this past weekend, I don't see myself using it ever again. It doesn't require you to actually manually link any services like venmo or paypal before others in your group choose to "settle up". This means they send money to wherever splitwise thinks it should go, based on your email and phone number. It tried to use my email and sent the payment to a venmo account that doesn't exist. It says the payment is pending, but I know that it will never complete. PLUS the user that sent the payment now has splitwise telling them they are "settled up". This means the payment will take an indeterminate amount of time to fail, and likely the other person will just end up having not paid me. So splitwise essentially caused us to not be able to split the bills lol. 1/5 not impressed. Much easier to just use a spreadsheet if that's the only way I am going to get paid.

Don’t bother anymore. I’ve actually never left a review for a app before but after my experience with splitwise I felt compelled to do so. I’ve used it for past couple of years to track expenses with group travel and also split expenses with my ex for our son. My use has been very basic and do not require the use of and of the pro features. Recently they limited the amount of transactions you can input a day to just 4! This is ridiculous as most people input all their transactions at the end of the month or at the end of a trip. The monthly fee they are asking is way to high for normal casual users who just want to use it when they got on trips with friends etc. a app that was so good and useful is pretty much ruined by being forced to watch a ad for the pro version and then being limited to only four transactions. Company seems greedy to me. I’ll just go back to my excel spreadsheets. The multiple other negative reviews should be clear to splitwise they made a wrong business decision here. I guess your idea was, “we are getting popular now, let’s see how we can make more money.” Looks like your decision made you less popular…

Only partial Spanish functionality?. We use the Splitwise app among roommates in Ecuador, in general love it. We love that the expenditures added will auto-load little icons when the words are recognizable like “gas”, “electric”, and “water”, but what would be so hard about having that feature in Spanish too? It really does make it visually easier to keep track, so I’d just love to see y’all make the same thing function for words like “luz”, “agua”, “arriendo”, “combustible” - terms that are consistent enough throughout Spanish-speaking countries (and Spanish speakers w/in the US) that they’d be easy enough for a user to figure out. I mean, if you already have the rest of the app and its features available in Spanish, why not that last little detail? 🤔 We wish we didn’t have to put things on the ledger in English all the time for the helpful icons to appear, because it feels snobbish and exclusionary of our housemates who are not Spanish-English bilingual.

Too big for their britches. I’ve used Splitwise for years, as a Pro subscriber. The core of their service works great but they keep disappointing me. For example, I have an old Venmo account that I needed to create for rent, but I do not use Venmo. Splitwise does not allow you to unpair your Venmo account. I tried Splitwise Pay, their service that lets you pay directly from Splitwise. It would sometimes take more than a week to get my money and there was no way to specify in app that you don’t want to use Splitwise Pay—I had to contact customer service and have them shut down the account. Just a couple examples there. The final straw that made me unsubscribe from Pro and seek another service was that without fixing the gaps in their feature set, they added daily transaction limits to try to push people toward Pro, and force free users to watch ads. It used to be that you could use the core features easily and you would pay for Pro for the power user extras. Further, they made the confusing choice not to inform their existing users of this change before it took place. And the AUDACITY to do this while basic things such as removing a payment method are missing, and have been for years, and without adding any new value to the app. They want to push people to pay them more money, without having done the work to deserve it. I can no longer recommend this app to friends and I no longer want to support them. Goodbye, Splitwise.

Great app but they buried ‘Record Cash Payment’. We have been using Splitwise for a couple years now to track all shared expenses, leveraging different groups to track trips, specific cards, and even categories of spend between the two of us. Some time ago a change was made to the “Settle Up” function where it defaults to using Splitwise Pay, and buries all other options, including Cash Payment. We much prefer to use Zelle to transfer payments as the transfers are instant and we’re not stuck waiting a week for the money to move. Record Cash Payment is available through several menu clicks, but the decision to hide it, as well as the lack of confirmation when using Splitwise Pay leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. We are still using Splitwise to track out expenses but are also actively searching for an alternative option should changes not be made to the settle up function.

How to ruin a 5 star experience. Splitwise used to be wonderful and I recommended it after every group trip as a way to track and split group costs. During my most recent experience with the app I noticed they made some changes to their business model. Unless you want to pay for Splitwise Pro- which seems like overkill for a person who uses this app ~3x a year- you have to watch an ad (for splitwise pro) while submitting each individual expense, you can only submit up to 3 expenses per day (what??!) AND, most ludicrously, you are CAPPED at inviting people at 10 invitations. A business that limits the number of times you can invite other users to ALSO use their product must be doomed. Splitwise- you have a good product!! Surely, this is not necessary. Google yourself. The recent feedback is not pretty 🥴. I’d happily pay cents per transaction to avoid all this friction. There must be other way to make money than destroying what was an enjoyable user interface. Yet another subscription model. Sigh.

Will be transitioning to another app. I have been a long-time user, lover, and supporter of Splitwise for over 5 years. I spread the word to all of my friends and got many people using the app. As of this week, Splitwise added a new feature where you have to wait 10 seconds before uploading any new expense if you have the free version and don’t pay for Splitwise Pro. I understand they are trying to find more ways to monetize and encourage upgrading to Pro, but with this feature, they will lose me as a user. This is one of the most ridiculous and aggressive ways I have seen an app harass its free users into upgrading to a paid version. Although it breaks my heart, I don’t support and agree with this methodology and as of today have started looking for other splitting apps to migrate to. If this feature is removed, I may consider coming back but as the app stands now, I can’t continue using it. Thank you for all the good years.

Prior “Free”-limitation much better. The price of the subscription service is just unreasonable. And is advertised aggressively in the app which is annoying. It’s is a useful app, although other have most overlapping features, I would be ok with a one-time payment but a subscription? No. A feature enhancement would be to improve what happens when you go from an equal split to a precise monetary amount for some. Imagine you go to a restaurant, you first decide we all split equally or you just want to register the money in the app so you don’t forget. But then someone had only a drink and no food so they want to be able to put their precise amount in. The rest of the group would still be happy to split equally, so easy as that, there should be a mixed mode that when you switch from equal shares to fixed amounts that the ration is still kept. At the moment you have to do all the math yourself…

Deleting app due to expense entry limit. This app is no longer worth it, and I will no longer be recommending it to people. I used it in the past and had good experiences but I just went to use it again for the first time in a while, only to discover they’ve added expense entry limits!!! The whole point of this app is to be able to simplify paying your friends back when there’s a lot of expenses/transactions. I used to be allowed to enter unlimited expenses but now I was limited to 4, and I’ve heard other people express that they’re now limited to only one entry. Ridiculous. And this app is definitely not worth $5 a month, if it was $0.99 per month or a one time fee of $5 for unlimited entries then I would pay for it. I’ll be deleting this app and finding another or making my own excel sheet. The worst thing to ever happen to the app industry is the rise in subscription models. I refuse to use and support apps that provided a service only to then screw over their current customers and charge for the same service that used to be free.

Unannounced sudden daily transaction limit. I’ve been using the free version for years with my wife to track our finances. I love the no-frills, just simple 50/50 split ledger of all things where it doesn’t matter when we pay each other back, and often we just don’t and whoever owes more will start paying for things until it evens out. But without warning, suddenly there are unskippable ads to pay for pro, with a newly added limit of three transactions per day. I don’t want or need any of the pro features, I just want to enter transactions. It makes the app basically useless for any kind of normal splitting without paying $5 a month - not that I can’t afford that but I absolutely can’t abide the way they went about forcing people to either pay or find an alternative. Three transactions a day is so severely annoying that it sends the message that they only want paid users. Why even offer any features for free? What a joke

Delivers on all its claims. I recently purchased a condo that my daughter is sharing with a roommate. Being new to the "landlord game", I immediately realized what a challenge expense sharing can be, especially with three different people paying specific bills. The app's focus on aggregate debts (rather than a balance-based expense ledger) was initially an adjustment for me, but the benefit of SplitWise's simplified approach quickly became apparent. It was only a matter of days before my daughter and her roommate began using it for additional expenses like groceries, ride shares, concert tickets, etc. I haven't needed to contact support, but the clean & logical UI, combined with thorough & concise documentation minimize the learning curve of using the app. After considering about a dozen expense sharing services, I had narrowed my list down to SplitWise and one of its competitors. Thus far, I've not had any regrets with my choice!

Surprisingly useful, not gimmicky. Idk why this app has such a low rating, maybe went through a rough period? But I just downloaded it for the first time in June 2025 to split expenses for a girls trip & it’s so fabulous! Worked exactly as we needed and gave us extra features like tracking what we’ve already “settles up” / paid each other then updating the balance, stellar! I was a little timid at first before downloading bc of the low rating.. but since the whole group was doing it then I had to, and I’m really glad I did! Will be using it more in the future. Also what a relief that the free version has what we needed and the app didn’t constant force you to upgrade, just makes you wait instead of locking down features, didn’t get in the way of itself which was such a relief. A++ 10/10

Love it - best app for sharing and splitting bills. The best application for sharing and splitting cost and bills with the group. We often travel in the group, and always challenged how to properly keep track of the bills, who pays, who owes. also being able to manage it in different currencies was a challenge. We tried many applications, none non-worked well until I just found a splitwise. it’s really doing the job! it’s great! we use it for trips and also manage other shared finances. it allows to settle the bill at any time. it allows to do different currencies and it allows also to attach the picture (of the bill) and add notes. It is awesome. I hope it will stay this way. love the application! Simple and provides all needs functionality. Kudos to designers and developers!

Premium is still very restricted. This used to be one of my favorite apps that I used pretty often. I had personally gotten at least 10-12 of my friends on this app few years back. Then this app became one of the most hated apps I have. It started implementing ad walls and per day limits for transactions. This made the app almost unusable for me and my friends because like most people I don’t enter my transactions daily. I generally do it all every few months. I explored getting the premium option. Their chart analysis options are bad and the UX is not appealing or intuitive. They added the possibility of getting transactions directly from bank account which almost would have made it worth it. I ended up buying premium for a month only to realize even their premium capabilities are pretty worthless. Splitwise lets you add accounts for transaction but they still limit you to only 3 cards! Average users have 4-5 cards if not more. So even if pay for premium, I have to still manually enter transactions for half of my cards/bank accounts. You can’t use their premium features on desktop. It’s hard to get to the connected accounts. To summarize, this app and its developers need a solid plan and lot of UX changes to make its premium be actually attractive to users instead of just annoying/nagging them until they buy or more realistically leave.

Used to be great; now pushes you into expensive subscription. As other reviewers have pointed out, the app now has timeouts when adding expenses and prevents you from adding more than 4 per day unless you subscribe to the $5/month “Pro” version. This makes the app bothersome to use in the best case, and useless in others. To the developer: it’s understandable for you to want a steady revenue stream from subscriptions. This app, however, has very simple functionality that has not changed in many years. Asking $5/month for it is disproportionate; $5-10 per year would be easier for users to accept. Also, I urge you to reconsider the hard limit of 4 expenses per day for the free version of the app. It’s a change that breaks the app for many users and pushes them away rather than encouraging them to subscribe. My advice is to keep the timeouts but ditch the limit.

Do Not Use Splitwise Pay. After misleading instruction my friends and I tried using Splitwise Pay instead of Venmo or PayPal as it made it seem like it would go from one checking account to the other. This was NOT the case. It took a full week to get payments into a “Splitwise Wallet” during which time it was listed as “pending” with no clarity on when it would be available. After that long wait I was informed that the money would actually just be sitting with Splitwise and not in my Checking account. Which is essentially like Venmo or PayPal only it took a full week to process and you can’t readily use Splitwise Pay with anything?! Do not know why on Earth they would choose to create a product that is actually WORSE than the alternatives currently supported. AND WHATS EVEN MORE CRIMINAL… is they were very misleading about how this would function and that it could take essentially 10 days to get money in this way! as it takes 2 additional days to transfer from Wallet to your Bank Account!!! So Frustrating and a shame they would release something and not be clear about it.

Ruined by most annoying and time-wasting pay gate imaginable. Used to be a great app but they ruined it with the most annoying monetization they could think of. They now limit to 3 expenses per day and added a 10-second “waiting period” between adding those 3 expenses. Makes this app completely unusable, like they are actively TRYING to annoy people and waste their time. Nobody adds expenses as they go for things like group trips. Everyone adds expenses in bulk later. This ridiculous update makes that totally impractical. The craziest part is this app’s whole value prop was that it SAVES you time figuring out shared expenses, but they added a pay gate that aggressively WASTES YOUR TIME! So while you’re waiting until tomorrow to add your 4th expense, you can easily find alternative free apps or just use a shared spreadsheet instead. Not worth paying for this, especially to company that treats their users like this.

Love it but.... I love and use this app constantly, to the point that it would make sense for me to use the pro version. So I did the 1 month free trial (thank you) but it didn’t seem worth the money. Specifically because I still can’t itemize transactions on the phone app, only the desktop, and the charts aren’t really helpful. In regards to the charts, if I could tap on a section of the pie chart and have every transaction that’s in that category shown - that would be Very helpful. Also, it’s not very clear on the charts if the total amount shown is the total of what Both people spent (and then split) or if it’s what I specifically spent after splitting expenses (again, would be very helpful to know/have both options). Last feedback is that it would be great if when using the itemized feature, that items could be split by a custom % instead of only 50/50 or 100/0. Fingers crossed these updates are doable! I tell people about this app all the time and it makes my like So much easier by removing the stress of remembering debts, but the above would really help a lot.

Impossible to get your money out. This app has been so bad i’m actually taking the time to write a review. When settling up with a group of 5 after a trip, someone sent their payment through splitwise pay (which we now realize was a huge mistake). They keep your money in a “pending” state for days, it takes like 5 days to process the payment and become available to you, and that’s before even starting the process to extract the money to your bank - which I couldn’t do, because it kept using Tink instead of Plaid as the 3P bank connector, and my bank of course isn’t on Tink because I live in the US. I messed with the language and region settings a bunch to try to get it to use Plaid, but it’s stuck on Tink and so I can’t connect my bank to get my money out. You also can’t cancel or take back the payment, even if it was just sent within the last hour and is still in processing. All of this, plus the super confusing user interface and all the useful features hidden behind their paid version (like im gonna spend money for a payment app that’s impossible to send payments through?). Just keep track of your expenses by hand and use venmo, save yourself the headache.

Disappointing Pro Model and Broken Features. I’ve used Splitwise for years, and while the app itself is fine for basic expense sharing, the recent switch to a $40/year Pro model has been disappointing. Recurring expenses are confusing to manage, buried in the mobile app UI, and inexplicably unavailable on the Web app. The feature to import credit card transactions has been broken for months, and even when it worked, it was poorly implemented—automatically canceling pending payments, forcing you to wait until transactions completed to import them. Worse, expenses were sometimes deleted without warning or interaction. Overall, the move to a subscription model without delivering meaningful Pro features feels unjustified. This direction has made the app less functional and has ultimately lost me as a customer. I hope future updates focus on fixing these basic issues before adding a price tag.

Suddenly charging for services that were free. I have been a loyal user of Splitwise for years and used it to manage utilities for the house I share with roommates. It’s always been very easy and convenient, but over the years I have accumulated more of the utility payments due to being here longest. This month, I went to add my four payments in and Splitwise will NOT let me add four list items anymore without upgrading. This is outrageous - I’m already spending a lot of my own money on the cost of living and paying for a significant amount of the utilities out of pocket, and now Splitwise won’t even let me settle up all of my monthly accounts all at once unless I pay an additional fee? This is especially annoying because my roommates may settle up the balances before I have a chance to add the addition expenditures - it creates more chaos overall and renders this app way less useful. One star rating unless this stupid policy is changed swiftly.

Ruined. This was one of my favorite apps being simple and efficient to use. For users needing more features, they made a paid pro version that provides that. Now, to promote the sale of the pro version, they actively made the app worse for free users. There are now intentional delays if you want register several expenses in a day (they force you to wait 15 seconds while you can't do anything), and a hard cap on expenses per day of you are even willing to put up with the waiting time. This is an example of a team that uses resources and time to make the experience of users *worse* to drive sales, rather than making their pro version worth buying. If one pays for the pro version, what's to stop them from coming up with a higher priced subscription and just make everything else garbage? The design direction of this app, deliberately inconveniencing users to drive sales, is disrespectful.

A must for splitting expenses with roommates! 🚩Can’t itemize existing photo or use iPad splitscreen. The only things missing the ability to work in split screen on an iPad Air M2, and itemize a receipt from an existing photo. Other than that, this app has everything I need! It works really well. Alot of thought and polish has gone into it. Paying for premium is 100% worth it since my roommates and I need to split a lot of group purchases. With the paid version you can automatically (with little need for manual corrections) itemize a paper receipt. The only problem is you have to take a picture, you can’t use the auto itemize feature if the receipt forms from an existing photo. To do that I have to pull the photo up on another screen and use the Splitwise app to take a picture of the picture of the receipt. It seems like a glaring lack when the rest of the app is so polished. Splitwise makes it really easy to carve up any receipt, you can choose how to split it by item, by different percentages for each person, or just manually enter amounts everyone owes. The only other feature I want added is the ability to work in split screen on an iPad. Right now I have to pull Splitwise up on my phone and set it next to my iPad when I want to review my budget, until I can put Splitwise in split screen then I’ll need two devices to manage my finances. Switching back and forth over and over between apps just to review my finances doesn’t work well for me.

Ordinary . . .. This is a waste of time if you can use a pen and paper to calculate who owes what. It is easy enough to enter expense details but if you want to amend or delete something, it still shows up and does not seem to calculate the amount owing correctly. Maybe it is useful for people who have to split lots of bills with different proportions and different people. Plus you can only enter a few expenses per day before you are prevented from loading any more and directed to their costed version - which is fair enough.

Limits Daily Usage Unless You Pay $$. Lately, there's been a change in Splitwise, limiting my daily usage until I upgrade to the "pro" version. While the app serves its purpose well, I haven't utilized its full potential and find it frustrating that there's no one-time payment option for basic features. I'm opting for an alternative app, as I prefer not to pay for features I won't use and dislike the absence of a basic version with a one-time fee.

Simple and useful. Used Splitwise for a few years on and off to track shared costs with a friend when travelling. Really simplifies fairly splitting costs for meals and accommodation. Splitwise recently (without warning) put a very low limit on daily transactions for the free version. It is now useless as an expense tracking tool when travelling. I’m moving to a different app (tricount or settleup) rather than be extorted into the Splitwise Pro version. They just got too greedy with this. How about a lifetime fee for the Pro version rather than $6 a month for the rest of eternity?

Daily limit makes the app unusable. This app was perfect until they introduced a daily limit to the free version. Now there is a waiting time to input every expense, and I could only put in 4 before it asked me to subscribe. Almost everything has a subscription fee nowadays. While I might pay if it were a small one off fee, I can’t justify a subscription when I only use this app in bursts every 3-6 months. The free version of the app is now so inconvenient it is unusable. I will be going elsewhere

Free Version Becoming Quite Useless. I’ve been using this app all year and it has been amazing for splitting things between my housemates and on trips with my partner. Unfortunately the recent change to the free version with constant ads to upgrade to the pro version and the limit to 3/4 daily expenses makes it basically unusable as I can’t add all my expenses. I’d be happy to pay a reasonable one off purchase of $10-$20 but I’m not willing to fork out $5/month for the rest of my life for this app - please reconsider!

Great way to manage outings or joint family expenses. Going out with friends and picking up different bits often confuses things leaving someone paying more than others - splitwise is awesome for sorting this out! Also, our family have a lot of shared costs looking after our Mum. This app makes it all so much easier!

One of the most useful easy apps ever developed!. My friends and family use this app every time we go away together. It takes the hassle out of who owes what to whom. The whole process from setting up a group and adding people, to adding your expenses along the way, plus settling balances at the end are all extremely simple and user friendly. Highly recommend!!

Great app!l but…. I use this for me and my partner instead of having a household credit card etc. Use it with friends as well when we go on trips. FEEDBACK: - the ability to be able to duplicate transactions to another date would be great when they have occurred again. - search function within groups! How is it that there isn’t a search function other than the big overall one?!?

'Splitsville' - travelling companion. Best tool for travelling with a friend, upgraded to pro as numerous receipts each day. So much better than keeping a manual page & loved the currency conversion. I missed the change date option initially, you could put that up body as an input field.. as not always inputting receipts each day & hey was on holidays so distracted by so many other things. Thanks for removing the $$ stress while travelling - easy to add in our 'splitsville' items every few days & good record of what we did!

Brilliant, elegant, clever.. This makes a previously onerous task, elegantly simple. When travelling with friends, this takes the effort out of sharing costs. I can’t recommend it enough. Just try it! There should be better words than brilliant, clever…

Must have - Handy finance organiser. Without this you need minimum two to three days to track and understand how much we spent. It would be great if Splitwise provide money payment options like providing bank accounts, PayPal and pay ids payment depends on the country or currency we are using will be more awesome.

Great solution.. This is a really good app. I found it especially useful when travelling overseas with 3 other families. The “share” function made splitting common expenses super easy. A feature I would like added in the future would be to do with the currency. I would like to be able to enter the foreign currency amount, and have Splitwise calculate it to a selected “base” currency. That would then make the required bank transfers a step easier.

Group holiday was a breeze with this app!!. This is one of the best apps I’ve ever had! Took all of the stress and trying to remember who paid for what out of our group holiday so that we could just relax and know that no matter who paid for dinner or groceries or national park fees, it would all magically balance at the end! SO GOOD!!!!!!

Recently introduced paywall completely ruins the app. Have been a satisfied user for years, however recently they introduced a forced wait time of 10 seconds when entering expenses, PLUS a maximum number of expenses that can be entered per day, in order to push their paid subscription. I understand the need to monetise the app, but this is the worst possible way to have done so. Ad banners dotted around the interface would literally be more tolerable. Instead, this method completely ruins the flow of entering expenses and the daily limit becomes a liability as it forces you to try and remember to come back another day to finish tracking your expenses, which is completely antithetical to the purposes of this app as an expense tracker. I am already in the process of seeking an alternative app due to this change.

Used to be amazing, not anymore!. Used to be so helpful and easy to use, however now that they’ve introduced the “pro” version it’s horrible to use without subscribing. The daily limit of expenses as well as the constant paywall ad makes it too frustrating to use. The subscription is too expensive as well - if it was a one off $20 maximum, or even $1-2 per month then I would be willing to pay. I’m on the lookout for a different app instead.

Shared House. Most of our expenses in house are paid by one and always cleared at the end of the month. Splitwise has kept it so well that we can store all our bills and split it smartly with simplified debts. And it makes transactions so much simple.

Lifesaver!!!. If there was any app that has actually changed my life for good, I would say it’s Splitwise. It has completely revolutionised the way we split expenses and track what we’ve spent on. Being a social person, almost all of my expense are with friends and family. The feeling of resentment and guilt that you’ve probably spent more than others and it being too late to ask for the split now is a thing of the past. I want to thank the Splitwise team absolutely help someone like me who is not very outspoken about money.

Widget disappeared.. Love this app, my partner and I use it all the time and share costs of things. However, one of the best things was it was also a widget for easy viewing access. Now, it’s suddenly gone! Are you guys going to bring it back? Maybe a new widget is in the works? Hi is there any update on ever getting the widget back?

Subscription for basic feature. I'm a simple person. I don't need the charts and currencies etc. i just need an app to split payments between me and my partner. Splitwise has put this basic feature behind their subscription, which is a ludicrous price for such a basic feature (limit of 3 expenses per day). Unfortunately there are no good alternatives that I know of, so I am tolerating this app for now. But will jump ship as soon as there is an alternative, unless Splitwise changes this greedy business model. (PS, I'm happy to see ads if it's necessary, but please remove 3 expenses a day)

Love the app but recent changes have ruined it. This app is great, really simple and I use it all the time. Unfortunately, along with everything else at the moment companies are squeezing every last dollar from you. Splitwise is no different, no enforcing unskippable wait times and limiting expenses per day. Fair enough the Splitwise app team want more money, but reducing functionality attempting to force customers to pay a subscription, when their app isn’t particularly unique is a bit of a boneheaded move, when I would assume banner ads would achieve similar results. As a result I am moving off Splitwise as well as encouraging all my friend group who use it to do the same. I would not recommend the app anymore.

Pain to use. Splitwise is disappointing. It seems designed to push users into upgrading to premium. The free version is almost unusable with constant, intrusive ads. Worse, you can only add three expenses per day, which is ridiculous for managing group expenses. The limitations make it clear they want to force you into paying for premium. Overall, it’s frustrating and not user-friendly. Look elsewhere for a more functional and less greedy expense-sharing app. P.S. moving back to tricount

This app is amazing!. My boyfriend and I used to have trouble keeping track of who owes how much because we try our best to go Dutch in dates, but this app has helped us with the big calculations a lot! We also use this with our flatmate to settle rent and bills, and when we’re out for dinner with a big group of friends, this genuinely helps us keep track of everything!

Great app for group travel. I have used Splitwise for heaps of trips away with friends now and it makes it SO much easier to track who has paid for what and gets rid of any awkwardness about anyone owing money. The app is really user friendly whether you are a pair or a larger group. Definitely recommend!

Best group app ever!. I have used this app for several groups and it’s capabilities are awesome. It takes out the guesswork, the angst and the hassle. Group meals where each member pays for an entire meal means you are not constantly bill splitting and Splitwise works it all out at the end! It even converted several currencies to AUD at a competitive rate. Would highly recommend for any occasion where expenses are shared.

Great app for travel groups. This is an amazing app l - I wish it was a little easier the graphics but overall the group is amazing to not have to transfer all the money over to people, awesome to see that others are using it too!!

Exactly what I needed. Was introduced to this app by a friend and so glad I was. We used to always manage our daily and holiday expenditures adhoc. Forever having the friendly “I’ll pay this one and you get the next one” argument. So easy now as we just enter it all in and Splitwise works it out for us. Doesn’t matter who pays on the day. Takes the pressure off. Looking now to upgrade as I can see this helping in other areas. EXCELLENT.

The most useful app I’ve ever downloaded. Without a doubt one of the best apps I’ve got on my phone, and a consistently used one. Get all your friends/family on Splitwise and stop worrying about the bill calculations. My friends and I basically have our own internal economy going where we just take turns paying for nights out and events - no money needs to even exchange between us! The variety of split options also means super easy calculations and easy to ensure people that don’t drink don’t pay for those that do etc. Utterly invaluable for group trips, to keep track of big expenses and costs overseas, with great features to track multi currency spending. Amazingly easy to use, great interface and all the features you need. Splitwise is the best utility app out there. Thanks guys!

Fantastic but sharing should be optional. Great app for tracking money lent and borrowed. Especially when paying shares. The only issue I have is that I use the app for myself and don’t want to have to have the other party contributing or logging in to it but you have to add a phone number or email. If you can just make this optional (including the phone/email) then it would definitely be 5 stars!

Confused everyone in my group. I would love to give this a higher rating because I’m enthusiastic about making accounting for expenses easier, but… This app confused everyone so much. Why not just show the net amount owed to each person instead of the breakdown. The breakdown should be shown in a clickable link or in another way. Good start, but you have some UI and usability issues to work out.

Excellent app. My group of 11 just used this app to track expenses on a two week vacation. It’s truly excellent. Splitwise has a great user interface, making it simple to enter any combination of participants and payments. And it’s all instantly synced between devices for all to see. 10/10

Best way to manage group trip finances. Recently travelled for theee months with various groups of friends. Tripwise kept this simple, visible and very clear. All friendships are intact! Would have been a great tool to have when I first set off backpacking many moons ago. Love it!

Life changing app. I have spent years using various ways of splitting costs between myself and my partner for both home expenses and trip expenses and this app is absolutely life changing! It is so clear and transparent to each party involved. It’s so easy to use and I honestly cannot believe I haven’t found it prior to now. The best part? It’s free!! Thank you Splitwise for taking the pain out of splitting expenses.

Simple yet brilliant. I use Splitwise in both group and one-on-one situations. I find it incredibly helpful not for just remembering who owes who but also for who has paid what. I would find it useful to edit the Settle Up function or at least have the simplification of debts be optional. Sometimes I want to pay a friend before they pay me back because that’s the way my budget works, but I have to wait for them to pay me so I can then pay them. I would also like to able to allocate payments to specific debts. All that aside, it’s still a powerful tool that has made life and paying for things so much easier. PS: Kittens!

Amazingly friendly and helpful app. My friends and i (3 all together) traveled south america and added all expenses into splitwise. This saved a lot of hassle and made sure everyone was on the same page with what they had spent on each other, could not recommend an application more!

Used to be amazing. For years I’ve used this app to track my partner and my spending. Definitely the most well made app I’ve used. Unfortunately, I’ve had to lower my review to the current rating because Splitwise used to be a fantastic free resource. Now you’re limited to only a few expenses added daily. I understand the apps desire to make money but after using the app for all this time and not being expected to pay makes this very inconvenient.

Great App. This is a beauty for trips away with your mates; keeps track and really simplifies what can otherwise be an awkward experience of working out who owes who what. 4/5 stars because just a few tiny odd things that might be bugs or might be misunderstandings - either way takes a little away from the user experience.

Splitwise Update Review: Forced Expense Wait. Splitwise recently introduced a significant change: a forced wait between adding expenses. Previously, users could swiftly input expenses, enhancing efficiency and convenience. However, this alteration disrupts the seamless experience, requiring users to pause between entries. While the intention behind this change might be to encourage people to sign-up to their “Pro Version”, it feels restrictive to users accustomed to the app's fluidity. The forced wait interrupts the flow of entering expenses, potentially leading to frustration, especially for those managing multiple transactions. Given that this restriction wasnt there when I started to use the app, adding that now only shows the approach - “Make them captive and then make them pay”! Won’t recommend. Rating. - 1/5

Deserves more hype. Been a loyal user for a few years and this makes managing expenses so much easier between friends or couples. Used it multiple times when I used to live with housemates and still use it when I travel with friends. When I travel I purchase the Pro plan so we can input in the local currency we spent and itemise the bill. So easy to use together with UP Bank.

Almost unusable now. This app used to be the go to for all my friends and housemates to easily split expenses but since the daily transaction limit has been implemented it is almost unusable. I understand they need to make money but the pro subscription is a higher price point than many of us are willing or able to pay. Please consider introducing either a lower tier subscription (say $5/year) that unlocks unlimited transaction adds without the other pro benefits, or allowing users to watch ads for unlimited additional transactions, otherwise I, and many others I know that used to love Splitwise, will be looking for alternative platforms to switch to.

Fantastic app. Was recommended to use this by friends that I was travelling with. It made splitting costs so much easier and was a good way to keep track of overall trip costs. Love the interface as well, easy to use and intuitive

Perfect app for splitting bills. This has simplified splitting out bills each month and leaves no one feeling as though they are short changed! It has been keeping track of exactly who owes who what and you can settle whenever the difference is getting too big

Great for traveling groups. Used this on a recent holiday in a group and it was such a great app. It meant we could easily split the bill at dinner or the accommodation costs. I now use it regularly with family members. One feature I would like to see is if you could link people into couples. That way you’re splitting into the right numbers but the ‘simplify group debts’ calculates between couple/family

Terrible now. I’ve used Splitwise for over 5 years now, but the latest version is just terrible. Takes forever to load when click the + icon to add a new transaction. Then of course you’ll see their annoying paid subscription message. If you want to learn how not to go about monetisation of an app, this is perfect. But they’re probably going to lose me and a bunch of users in the very near future. I’m not opposed to paying for apps that I love, but it’s important they go about this the right away. Destroying the usability of an app is not the way to do it.

Recent Daily Limit Change. I have been using Splitwise for basic bill splitting for some time now, and although the app is good for what it is, I do not use the app to it’s full potential and therefore never upgraded to the ‘pro’ version. Recently I came across a screen which has limited my daily use until I upgrade to the “pro” version. This is becoming all too common in the digital scene now. And of course, a monthly or yearly fee is applicable for the pro version and no one-time payment is available. I refuse to pay for a full version for features I do not use and I am appalled that no basic version with a one-time fee is available. I will be deleting the app and using another system for my needs because of the money-grabbing developers squeezing every dollar they can out of an average app.

Great until hampered free version and too expensive Pro version. Has been my go to app for so long. I’m happy to pay some money for this “pro” version but really the pro tier just gives you more than 3 transactions per day for $40/yr. That’s way too much. I dont expect free things but maybe $20/yr is reasonable.

Money in & out in 2 currencies. This app is awesome. We travelled as a family of 4 - all agreeing to split some but not all bills. The app is so versatile- you can put $0 against one group member when they don’t need to pay and you can split transactions unevenly- allocating differing amounts to each person. This made our overseas trip soooo much easier. I would highly recommend the app to any group who regularly share expenses. Thanks so much to the developers.

Daily limit change. The update which limits the users adding daily expense doesn’t make sense. The need to pay for the “pro” version just for the basic needs ( which is the essential feature and use of the app) is ridiculous. I have recommended the app to my friends before and I also knew the app from a recommendation. I’m afraid I will be deleting the app and look for alternatives and will tell my friends the same.

Best travel and non-travel app ever!. Travelling with a friend we used Splitwise, it was simple to use and easy to keep track of who had paid for what and when. The ability to choose how the bill is spilt (if at all) is awesome. I am now going to use it with a group of friends - we get together often eg dinners at home and weekends away, Splitwise will take the stress and confusion out of remembering who owes what to whom. Brilliant.

Excellent app. This is such a helpful aid when you’re sharing expenses with others. You just add in what you paid and how it was split and Splitwise does the work totalling up. When I travel with my sister we take it in turns to pay for meals, drinks, trips etc and then each of us adds our cost into Splitwise - at the end of the holiday we settle up with what Splitwise says we owe. Highly recommended!

Best app for expense splitting. Excellent for splitting shared costs either on long term basis or for a group trip/holiday. Allows you to split equally (or not) and accurately keep record of shared spending. Also simplifies debts which helps to reduce settling up transactions for amounts owed to others at the end! Couldn’t recommend more highly!!!

WAS an amazing app. Everything was perfect until Splitwise started asking money to pretty much use their app!

P.S. Kittens is the greatest part. Very useful!

Bye splitwise. Had been using the app for years among friends and now as household budgeting. I dont mind ads in exchange for free use. But the 3/day limit basically force people to pay, while the pricing is ridiculously high. So i’d either explore other free apps, or go back excel!

Good but complicated.. Very difficult to understand how it split. Better keep splitting separately for every month. No need to add up balance for next month.

They updated and now u need to pay to post more than 5 expenses. I was using this app and it was working fine before, but now they updated and I cannot add more than 5 expenses per day. This is so annoying and sad, as I do all my expenses and the end of month all together. They don't deserver more than 1 star anymore corporate becoming just greedy for this nicely made app. Just will switch to another app now there’s plenty.

Updated and it’s worse.. Updated app to find they limit entries daily now. Great. Would purchase pro version but not for its inflated price. Will delete now. Find a different way.

App is unusable without paid subscription. App has been recently updated to limit number of transactions without paying $4 a month for a subscription, making the free tier effectively useless. I will not be using the app anymore.

Great app.. Takes the guesswork out of it all.

Trash. Other app developers should use this app to learn what NOT/NEVER to do to your beloved app. This app used to be a gold standard and now it is trash with constant subscription annoyances and barriers. I would understand developers need to earn but why not settle for small one time fee to large user base instead of monthly subscription reminders to a select few.

Free Tier Has Been Neutered. One of my favourite apps in the past, but unfortunately the new pricing structure it’ll be time to move on for me. The new free tier limit is 3 expenses per day, non-accumulating. Splitwise pro is priced at 4.99/month, and frankly that’s just too much for a utility (albeit a very good one). If there was an ad supported free option that was implemented well (tastefully, or watch an add after 10 expenses per day) I could probably get behind it. Or if there was a one time purchase option for a reasonable amount I would maybe get behind it. Or if there was a “pay us $1/month the 3 expenses per day to accumulate” I would probably even stick around for that. But as it stands, it’s going to be very hard to convince people who don’t have Splitwise to use this for a trip, group, etc. It was a good run.

Simplified really isn't simplified. Read the title. You will have your friends questions where did this cost go or come from. The greatest way to get into fights since monopoly came out.

The new upgrade is pethetic. Been using splitwise for years! But seems like would need to switch now, because of daily transaction limits, and 10 seconds waits in the new upgrade introduced last week. Thanks to team Splitwise for serving us for ages.

Great idea to simplify sharing. Used this first time for a trip. And now use it with roomates. Great app. Simple and easy to use to keep up to date. Problematic when using multiple currencies. Should be fixed.

Don’t recommend. Ugly UI, clunky, not easy to use

Disappointing. Used to love this app for settling up with friends but with the limit on daily expenses, I’m going to have to find a different app. I wait until week or month end to total my expenses so only being able to add a few in one day is extremely frustrating.

Doesn’t convert rates, begs for money. I have never seen an app so desperate for money. Can’t even give it a try because you can only enter like 4 expenses before being locked out for 24 hours. It’s taking our group a whole week to use it for one trip. I ended up making a shared spreadsheet that does the same thing but also does the currency exchange. What a trash app.

Bad practices. Used this app for over 5 years and suddenly they decide to out limits and timers for free users on all the basic features! I’m out. Made my own app at this point. $5/mo to use basic features!? Outrageous.

Limit expense deserve 1 star. Since they put a limit expense per day the app so useless since I usually add my expenses twice a month all at once. Now I can’t do it anymore and subscription is way to expensive.

Downfall of Splitwise. I’ll be searching for a new app. Recent limits on daily transactions and watching ads to submit an expense? I’d rather use spreadsheet. Bye Splitwise!

App is good, but…. Have been using the app for a few years and really liked it, until they capped the number of entries to make per day to 3, so it’s basically useless. Will stop using the app from now on.

Daily limit makes app unusable. This app used to be 5 stars but had to change it to 1 star. Daily limit makes the app unusable. Will be switching to a different app and uninstalling. Disappointing to say the least, this used to be one of my favorite apps.

No more splitwise. Daily limit is worst decision taken by splitwise

Used to be great. Really? can only add 3 expenses a day?

Makes life easier. Easy to use

Obsessed with this app!. Love the simplicity for event planning and travel. Awesome awesome awesome!

Adding a paywall for core functionality. Stopping users from using the core functionality of your product to make them pay is the most ridiculous decision any company could take. The 10 second timer, even though very annoying was still fine. Now you stop users from adding expenses for the day after 3 expenses is just crazy. What’s next? Limited number of expenses for the whole account? Before I see this day I’m going to ask all my friends to migrate.

Perfect. This app is just perfect. Although, should be able to add "guest" without having to use any email like for one time friends..

👌. Really neat app. I live with my friends in a house and splitwise greatly simplified our routine when we decide who owes what.

Forcing people for paying $$$ for pro. This has come to a horrible way to forcing people to sign up. I used to love this app for splitting expenses. Canceling my account and deleting the app.. this app is going downhill for sure

Ok but still not simple. Could be much more helpful if you could enter "expense paid". Instead you have to wait till everyone has paid that expense then delete that expense. I think using an excel sheet will be more helpful for us.

Changed policy. Developers should recognize the value of early adopters who helped build the reputation that brought more clients… Changing the cost structure for NEW users is fair as they know from the get go what they’re getting into. Changing the terms for existing users is just wrong and shows corporate values I don’t want to encourage. There are many alternatives to Splitwise. Do your research people…

Ruined the app with Update. Doesn’t allow me add transactions anymore, makes me wait 10 seconds or force $50 charge to buy pro. Lol . This app is done

Très bonne app. Très bonne app

Simplify. Still need to use excel to figure out where the extra costs are coming from

Bad after subscription and ads. It’s really bad how they have made subscription model almost to mandatory.

You just lost a user. The paid version is now mandatory for the majority of the users who used this app to split bills of the house. 2 expenses per day is ridiculous. I’m switching to your competitor.

Subscription mandatory. This app used to be good and offer a premium service but now it gets you just basic use. Get another app, I recommend splid

Microtransactions and ads. Use to be the best app for splitting, now you are limited to adding 3 expenses per day and have to watch a 10 second ad before submitting a expense. Avoid this app!

Great app. Best app to keep a tab on shared expenses

Limite de dépenses. La nouvelle limite de dépenses que l'on peut entrer en une journée me déçoit.

worst update. ridiculous

Update ruined the app. Use to be the best useful app on app store now they’re trying to force us to pay for the pro version. I do not recommend this app and we’ll change for another app with a free version. Shame on you Splitwise!

Good. Pretty nice

Splitwise no more. Used to love the app. But now there are plenty of 5 sec ads to watch before you can enter an expense. I would be ok with it if there was not in addition a limit of 4 or 5 expenses a day. When we travel with friends we need more flexibility. Will be using another app going forward.

Terrible app don’t use. Max 4 submissions per day. If you add up expenses at the end of a trip you’re doomed. Can’t even use the basic functionality of an app, why would anyone consider paying for pro? Will be switching to alternatives.

Décevant. L’idée est génial mais il faut absolument payer pour utiliser l’application… on y échappe pas c’est très dommage.

Really confusing. App is so confusing to use! Doesn’t show the total amount owed/lent. Here’s an idea, just make it like a credit/debit table. Like in finance, two columns titled credit and debit. It’s easier to see the final total amount.

Too Many Subscription Notifications. See title

Ruins Relationships. The only good thing about this app is in the settings when you tap the screens cats appear. Maybe this app is great for small groups (less than 5 people), since all the people are more likely to be involved in the spending decisions. As for larger groups, I strongly DO NOT RECOMMEND this app. Anyone can add anything and anyone can delete expenses they did not add.. turns into an all out WAR ZONE as friends argue about what is to be included / excluded. It also does not net out payments to minimize the number of e transfers.

It’s pretty good. I like using this app to help my partner and I keep track of household expenses. But I am so sick of paying a subscription fee for EVERYTHING. Is there a way that I can just pay a flat rate and use this app? I would absolutely opt out of future updates and features if it means a one time fee.

👉 Are you looking for an Adsense alternative advertising platform?

Adsterra is the most preferred ad network for those looking for an alternative to AdSense. Adsterra is the ideal choice for new sites with low daily traffic. In order to advertise on the site in Adsterra, like other ad networks, a certain traffic limit, domain age, etc. is required. There are no strict rules. Sign up!

Deceptive and Progressively Becomes Unusable. Does not communicate that there is a daily limit for charges. That is a bizarre strategy to gain premium subscribers and blatantly unprofessional to be deceptive. We are in the middle of trying to enjoy a trip and using this app to manage financial stress, and now this has been compounded and created a ton of extra work for us while traveling. This is an unacceptable and unprofessional marketing strategy, not to mention sheerly ineffective as it compels your users to delete the app and choose another, and disbands any potential recommendations you may receive. Luring user in with an effective app, only to add inconveniences and fully dismantle functionality is unethical. Especially when concerning your users money. I have never left a review before, but I cannot compel you enough to choose another option.

A needless app for those who can’t math. Where do I start? From the stupid phrasing, to the clunky interface, to having to give yet another startup your financial information. I wish I’d just told the people requesting through Splitwise that I’d just Venmo them. I tried to add roughly the amount of what I owed to Splitwise Pay, then a couple days later, went to “Settle up” (don’t forget that phrase, or you want be able to easily pay the people you owe money to) and it withdrew from my account rather than my balance. Why? Because the transaction has still not shown up as completed almost a week later and already having left my bank account. Or there was some extra step I missed to use their native system. Either way, it’s garbage and I need to figure out how to get my $300 back out.

It’s ok but has major problems. Here’s my use case: I live with my girlfriend and we split all our bills in our household If you delete a bill that’s been already paid: now the person who paid the bill owes the other person an amount equivalent to their half. Changing a recurring charge date or amount is truly a nightmare and will always result in a 1-2 month confusion period. I’ve had an error that has occurred after coming back from Venmo a number of times where it says the transaction has failed. It’s a trap! If you manually mark it paid, it will just say that the other person owes you money once it figures it out later. I don’t know if it’s their systems reconciling it or the app itself gets into a weird state that requires a restart. I hope the people who work on this app dogfood it because it is so painful to use. The moment that there’s an alternative to this app, I’m sold. To use Splitwise, you have to be a forensic accountant and the tools they provide don’t help because they lack any real granularity. I have the pro version. It’s offers almost no additional help.

Wonderful app, sleazy contacts needs. I love the purpose and thoroughness of this app! Desperately needed, saves so much math headaches. But when I just wanted to split between a few camping trip peers, the app required unique, verified, real contact info for every single person, just to split costs for one trip. Many people need to split costs with those they may not know well, but even knowing all these people—it’s really inconvenient and sleazy to require verified contact info (clearly to try and spread the app more), but it turned the whole group off to the app and now all these potential future users associate the app with being sketchy in its user data requirements. Please, don’t give in to tacky behavior or “dark UX patterns”. Only require user data when it’s actually necessary. Thank you!

Paywall to Use - Free Version Useless. All of the features that would make this app useful are locked behind a subscription. You can not upload photos or add more then 4 items per person a day unless you sign up for a subscription. There is no option to watch ads or get around this. In my case I was on a trip where I didn’t have an internet connection consistently and didn’t want to open an app every time I paid for something. So everyone on the trip just saved their receipts. Went to use the app and it’s completely useless without paying. Cannot upload more then 4 items a day, so with 30+ receipts in front of me I would have to waste a lot of time coming back day after day to get them all in. I cannot upload photos anyway even if I could add more items per day. For someone who would only use this app once every few months it’s useless as everyone I went on the trip with doesn’t want to pay the subscription to use it. There are a lot of other ways the company could make money to pay for its hosting for free users but not offering any of them is disappointing. I guess I’ll have to resort to simple math to divide up our trip.

Love it but could use some changes. The app makes it super easy to split up expenses. You can create a group and choose who paid and who you want to split it from in that group if all were not involved. I wish it would give an option for the payer to say the bill was settled and have it close out without deleting the expense. I use it to split things with my roommates and it can get confusing sometimes keeping track when expenses don’t close. I have to make sure to add comments on them to keep track. It would be such a great feature if they would add something that would allow you to settle the bill so it would remove itself from the screen.

Great app idea!. Splitwise is a super cool idea and my friends and I used it for my bff’s bachelorette party. I have some feedback. -I was able to pay through PayPal but half the girls didn’t have PayPal so now we’re trying to figure out how they get their money. Don’t offer a payment until someone puts in the email associated to the account that way if they don’t put in the email for PayPal, I can’t pay them through PayPal bc now we need to figure out how she gets the money and it’s literally been taken out of my PayPal already and she still can’t figure out how to receive it. -I didn’t see anywhere that explained what to do so as soon as someone added a dollar amount and split it between us all, I paid it. Needs be more intuitive or have some kind of pop up like wait until all your friends add the amounts before you pay so you’re not having to pay people in multiple transactions. That just wasn’t clear to wait until all transactions were added until you “settle”. Make that more clear somehow. Hope that makes sense? Thank you!! Cool app idea, can’t wait to see it be more intuitive.

App has been rendered useless. The new restrictions on the free version allow you to put only three expenses in one day. That defeats the whole purpose of the entire app. I feel like if they were so strapped for cash or needed to monetize their service they could find other methods to do that. They could certainly have used advertising, and I think no one would mind. The app provides a convenience not a necessity. Splitting expenses is made easier but certainly it’s a task that can be accomplished by any normal, rational individual that has been doing it for decades manually. The apps purpose was that it provided the convenience for free and taking that away seems like probably the worst business move they’re gonna make. They have overestimated how captive their audience is, and the cost of substitution is going to be high

Very helpful, a few improvements. Found splitwise very useful for settling a group cost for a wedding trip among 17 people, with numerous couples. It was ok adding costs using the "split by shares" feature for couples, however it would be better to be able to set the share amount on a per-person basis, as all couples were paying jointly. Without that feature it was annoying adding each cost, and when we had to add another party to the group I had to update all of the costs again. Also, at the end two people were owed money (myself and one other), however it was easier for me to act as the "bank" so all owed money would be sent to me and I would pay back the one other person owed. Splitwise has the "simplify group debts" feature, but that still produces a more complicated array of who owes whom. It would be simpler to communicate the final tally if there was an option to set one person as the "bank", especially since most of the people are not signed up (nor want to) to splitwise, and I am communicating the costs to them. Otherwise it was very useful and I'd use it again and recommend it to others!

Great idea....but too confusing. This app can be so amazing when planning a big event and sharing the cost with several hosts. BUT OH MY GOODNESS....if anyone "settles up" before all expenses are entered and the whole group is ready, it cause such a headache and take so much more time and energy than it is worth. Suddenly a few hosts are not being included in some of the expenses and then trying to get everyone to back track and reverse payments is insane. As the lead host I look like an idiot because this app does not clearly explain what it means to settle up. There should be a way for one person to control when the group is ready to settle so no one does anything until it's time. Now I'm having to recalculate all our expenses, then ask everyone what they have paid to who and then figure out how to redistribute the correct amount owned to and by each host. Ridiculous!

Upset. I’ve been using Splitwise for many years and have always appreciated it very much. I loved the graphics, the seamless interface and the convenience. I had never had any issues. Then, just today, out of nowhere, I was using the app when suddenly an ad had to be played before adding any expenses. And then, with no warning, after adding in just four expenses, (and watching several ads for Splitwise pro), it said I couldn’t add any more expenses for the day unless I wanted to purchase the pro version. There was no warning that this might be happening soon. I was in middle of my busy day when this happened. I’m extremely disappointed. And the price of the pro version is ridiculous!! I’m very very upset and will be telling everyone I know (including on social media) to delete the app as it is now a big inconvenience. Very upsetting.

This app is GENIUS. I hardly ever leave App Store reviews but I had to for this one. Splitwise is an absolutely genius app for tracking group expenses and simplifying the process of settling up. I used to have an elaborate spreadsheet that I would maintain on all of my group trips. I thought it did a good job and it was certainly better than nothing, but it was pretty complex to settle up at the end of the trip. Splitwise handles all this for me, plus adds even more “nerd knobs” to it, like customizing percentages of an expense, simplifying repayments, etc. I will never NOT use Splitwise on a group trip again.

SplitWise *used* to be good. SplitWise was our friend group’s go-to expense splitting app for ~10 years. We loved it. Apparently, mining our data didn’t generate as much revenue as SW wanted, so they added a bunch of arbitrary restrictions (ex: daily expense count limits) and took away previously free functionality (ex: adding receipt images) to try to FORCE their users to convert to “premium” subscribers and pay a ridiculous price for an occasionally-used app. We used to use SW once per year. Paying $40 *per participant*, *per year* to get basic expense splitting and tracking functionality for a single group trip is insane. $5/ year, maybe. Thankfully, there are many free alternatives. Bye bye SplitWise, hello Tricount! Easier to use, has all of the features we need, and best of all: it’s FREE!! They don’t even *offer* for-pay features or have any ads.

Wish I knew about it sooner. This app makes managing money a breeze! I only need it to track payments between people in my traveling group and it’s been so helpful, especially for those who are… mathematically challenged, like I am. It’s easy to exclude certain people who weren’t involved in a transaction, or to split costs in different ways (e.g., equally, in shares, percentages, exact amounts.) I like how you can also send reminders via the app for payments if they owe you, rather than awkwardly ask people directly for money lol. I also like the ability to incorporate different currencies. This is so useful and I love it. Thank you for developing it!

Horrible Software with ZERO Customer Service. My friends stumbled across this app and we were hosting a party and needed to figure expenses. I signed up and accidentally mistyped my email address. No problem right? I’ll have to verify and then I can fix the problem? I work in software. That’s standard practice. Not with Splitwise. My friends started VENMO’ing this wrong email address and have yet to receive their payments back. Change the address right? Can’t do it unless the current (incorrect) email address is confirmed. What??? Since it’s the wrong address can’t confirm. Great. Contact custom service, right? I have emailed them THREE times to fix the problem with no response. Who is QA’ing this app? I don’t understand how these simple verifications are implemented in an app dealing with money and VENMO. My friends will never see that money again. Thanks Splitwise. You are a terrible app.

Great app, one suggestion. Great app, my partner and I use all the time! It’s especially useful when traveling abroad, it will convert the currency for you (if you pay for it). My favorite feature is the ability to scan a receipt and have it itemized so I can divvy it out between people (also a feature you need to pay for). My only suggestion would be to allow the scan feature to scan screen shots/pictures of a receipt you have, not just a physical receipt. Other than that, wonderful app and highly recommend!

Corporate greed leads to the end of an era. An avid splitwise user for many years, I was shocked at the recent update for the free version. Users will be limited to posting three transactions a day, and to post a new transaction, you must wait through 10 seconds of an advertisement. This has made splitwise virtually unusable. Splitwise was THE app for my friend group but we are now moving on to other alternatives. Unfortunately, the reasoning provided to Splitwise users (these changes were instituted due to bots/spam) is suspect and laughable. It’s clear they’re pushing users to pay for the pro version. For more information and other users’ experiences, search “splitwise update” on your favorite search engine and go through the various forums. What a shame for such a great app; however, like all good things, they come to an end. This time, however, it’s due to corporate greed.

Easiest way to split group expenses. I didn’t understand the benefit of this app until I used it myself. I thought, “I already know how to divide expenses evenly between people so what is the point of this extra app?” Well let me tell you… This is SO MUCH easier than Venmo requests, spreadsheets, whatever else you’re using to track the amount each person owes. Use it on a group trip with friends. Use it to split up a mass lunch order with coworkers. Use it when planning a bridal shower with a bunch of girls you barely know. I swear it’ll make everything way more efficient and it’s not just a pointless app to add to your phone!

App charge limit has rendered this app unusable.. I have used Splitwise for years and it has always been a great utility for my friends and I. I was very disappointed to find out that they randomly started to limit the number of transactions per day to <3 without a pro account (which is a monthly subscription). The company that owns the app has decided to turn on the money faucet at the expense of ALL of their loyal, long term users trust. This basically makes the app useless for people like myself who regularly submit multiple transactions in a day, or prefer to submit all transactions from a trip in bulk all at once. My friends and I have now reverted to making our own spreadsheets to track our expenses and who was involved. Regardless of how I used to feel about the app, it is now essentially useless to me with these new money hungry changes.

Another victim of subscriptions. Was a great app but now it’s almost unusable without the overpriced subscription. I would understand not being able to connect bank accounts, locking certain features or multiple groups behind a paid tier but limiting it to 3 transactions per day (two of which you have to wait 10 seconds to enter) is just annoying. Don’t get me wrong I’m happy to support and pay for a useful service but $4/month or $40 / year for a slightly more convenient version of something you can setup in a (free) google sheet to me isn't worth it. If there was a less feature rich version (just the base manual expense splitting functionality) that I could pay one time for I’d absolutely do it.

Has precious spot on my Home Screen. I love SplitWise! Been using it for several years now, it’s now on my main Home Screen because I use it so often. It’s so much easier than constantly go back and forth for each little payment. Instead, I’m able to keep a running tab with my friends and family. And we will settle up if the balance gets too high or if we want to close it out. The Venmo integration works perfect and I’ve never had issues receiving payment or paying someone. I love that you can split a bill by dollar amount, percentage, or number of shares, it’s really flexible! SplitWise is a must have for group trips!!

Great tracking , confusing totals. I loved this app when tracking expenses on a recent trip. It was so easy to add an expense then split it with all or just some members of the group. Was also easy to shift between currencies. However the reports of the totals are very confusing. For example I get a report that says “you owe x person $x amount overall” but then below it says “plus 2 more balances”. That plus 2 isn’t a clickable link and there no way to tell what it’s referring to. Add to that that the currencies won’t automatically settle up unless you pay for a pro version. The upshot is that we are plugging all of our expenses into a spreadsheet which defeats the purpose of using an app. Overall it’s got a lot of promise but needs a lot of work.

Frustrating and Disappointing User Experience. I used to love Splitwise for keeping track of shared expenses with my friends and family. It was simple, convenient, and free. However, I was very disappointed when they introduced a daily limit of three expenses for free users. This makes the app practically useless for me, as I often have more than three transactions to record in a day. I understand that they need to make money, but I think their pricing for the Pro version is too high for what it offers. I don't need all the extra features, I just want to be able to use the app as I did before. I feel like they are forcing me to pay for something that I don't need or want. I'm sorry, but I'm going to look for an alternative app that respects its users and doesn't limit their functionality. Splitwise, you have lost a loyal customer.

Fantastic App - Experience Ruined by Update. I’ve used this app occasionally for trips where my partner and I share expenses. In the past it has been extremely useful for those 2-3 times a year and I’ve raved about it and shared to friends. However the recent update now locks the majority of functions behind a paywall, most notably you are only allowed to post 3 expenses per day now before being locked out. This is sad to see. I feel the payed features are great for power users and I’m sure many like them, but I felt it was fair that I could use the basic function of adding expenses as a way of logging them without needing to pay but now even that’s been paywalled. Bottom line, I no longer recommend this app for the average user and I’ll find an alternative.

Just what we were looking for. We are traveling to South America and wanted a way to split up costs considering that there were a lot of things we couldn’t split. This app keeps track of who owes the other, how much, gives the ability to pay them back and more. Since I wanted to keep track of all the finances (and not just stuff we split,) it let’s me keep track of things that we don’t split too. Also (though this might be something that just I am really stoked about,) they export everything to excel with categories, times, costs, who paid, what currency, etc.

Great app with a small issue. I have been using this app for 3 years now and it is very simple and intuitive to use. Payment option using PayPal is great and the balance reminders a boon. Deducted 1 star because I really hate the settle all feature. Instead of creating a borrowing entry it should record a payment entry in the groups/no Group where money is owed to other person and give the sender option to record any extra amount after all balances as borrowed amount in any one of the groups the individuals share. This helps us keep track of the expenses that have been settled instead of reflecting a borrowing and then balancing all groups.

Great until basic features were locked behind paywall. Splitwise has been a fantastic app for years, coordinating spending on overseas trips, daily grocery buying and building a house expenses. I didn’t need any of the more advanced features, as it worked perfectly fine and met my needs as a basic expense tracker. I could do analytics and arrange settle up payments myself. 5 stars for what it did. But now the free app locks more than 4 entries per day behind the Pro subscription. That breaks the app for me, not least because I have more than 4 things I need to input on the average day but also that I tend to do in bulk a few days later. This paywall breaks the app for me. I’ll be finding a replacement app and deleting Splitwise as soon as I do. It’s been a fun ride for more than 5 years, but it’s now a ‘wise’ time to ‘split’ from the app—and say goodbye.

Useless without paid version. I’ve used Splitwise for years, usually for trips with friends, and have really liked it. It had the features I needed, and the UI is easy to navigate/use. But the limits they’ve placed on free users in the last year or so are ridiculous. You can only enter 3 or 4 expenses per day, and they have the audacity to say it’s to prevent spam/bots. If that was the case, the limit should’ve been at least 10-20 expenses/day (paid users get over 1000/day). I know they have to make money, but removing all value for free users is not the way to do it, especially when free alternatives exist. I’ll either be finding a new app or switching to spreadsheets after my current trip is settled up. There’s also no trial if you sign up for Pro, so you can’t even see if the added features are worth paying for without paying for them first.

Excellent App for splitting expenses. We have been using this App for many years now for travels with big and large groups. App has rich features that allow for expenses to be split up among individuals into many different ways. It’s also great when you want to capture expenses on a single trip when you visit multiple countries with different currencies. App also allows for multiple people to add expenses to the same trip, when expenses are to be shared among a subset of people from the whole group. Make your life simple and use the app when you travel.

Formerly Great App rendered useless by greedy developers. Splitwise used to be great and was a must have for any trips with friends. We would add everything to splitwise and use it to keep track (book a hotel’s- put it in splitwise, pay for dinner-splitwise, grab a bottle of water for me and I’ll add it to splitwise). Now you can only add 4 expenses a day without paying which makes it completely useless for the purposes we use it. And having to wait for an add an expense for a premium add is annoying, often times we are just adding something in immediately after purchase before we forget the amount. We are struggling through on a current trip because we already started with splitwise before, but after this is settled up it will be deleted and an alternative will be used.

Beware of Splitwise Pay!. They recently changed the UX so Splitwise pay is the default and you have to dig to find Venmo to settle up. Splitwise pay is a complete nightmare. My wife unknowingly used it to settle up our rent and another settle for some bills. Normally it goes to Venmo instantly and I can transfer into my account in under 3 days (it’s usually 1). Instead Splitwise Pay took 3 days for it to land on my side in Splitwise. I transferred the money for bills into my bank account while waiting for the rent to come over in Splitwise, that’s another 3 days. Then the rent finally clears, I go to transfer it and get the message that it can’t transfer because it exceeds the $2000 weekly transfer limit. I could not be more disappointed. It feels like you are holding my money hostage when we didn’t even knowingly switch to your service.

Terrible UX. This app is cluttered and requires too many taps to complete entering an expense. I used the free version, and the activity page is so poorly constructed and difficult to follow. You can’t even search an expense in the free version. It’s far too time consuming to use. This app only makes sense if you want to add an expense infrequently, but at that point, just use Venmo. If you share a lot of expenses, you spend a lot of time entering it all manually. It also sometimes erases your calculations when you switch to another app for a moment. I know you can get more features in the paid version, but for the app design I have seen already, I’m not tempted. I don’t think it should take so many taps just to enter one expense, and I think it’s unfair such a basic function as a SEARCH should only come with the paid version.

Used to love this app until they limited transactions. I’ve used this app for several years and loved it. Used it both for US currency and when traveling out of the country. BUT in the last week, without any notice, they limited the number of transactions that one can enter per day in the free version. I think it’s 3 (it’s not like I can find the number on their app; had to go on line to see what others had found happening). Sometimes that’s fine, but if I go to several stores in one day, it’s very inconvenient. I’m now looking at different apps for the same purpose, since on a trip, this will make the app pretty useless. Hoping they change back, since I’d think they’ll lose a lot of business if they continue with this.

Great App!. Man this is such a great app! I'm using it to split the living expenses with my roommates! We used to keep all our receipts and I would manually calculate at the end of the month, but this app allows us to keep track as we go. So long mountain of receipts! One thing that will make this better is if there is like the ability to create some commonly use expenses. Im just lazy and didnt want to keep tying in "grocery" and electricity etc. Would be nice if the "Type in description" part starts to auto fill with these self created expenses, or maybe just recent descriptions, or an option for a pulldown that type of thing ovok~

Needs a tweak. I use this app for tracking bills in a multi family home. It helps me a lot ! but what I would like to see is for example in a group, if it says Mary owes $100, I would like to know what EXACTLY $100 is owed in (such as a utility, cable, etc). It doesn’t show specifics once you put the bill in, just the total amount owed. Also, I would like the option of the user disappearing off the owed bill once they have paid. This would make it SO much easier to keep track of who paid what, instead of me typing in a note every time when a payment submitted as to what bill the payment is applied for. Thanks for reading for my suggestion. Please let me know if I am doing something wrong and these options already exist. - Jennifer

Good for splitting but they want to force you into their payment processing. I like it for splitting expenses but don’t like that they aren’t allowing a user to specify what form of payment they will accept. Attaching your bank account details including your date of birth to yet another money handler is extremely dangerous in the days of rampant hacking. It has the potential to wipe you out financially. Attached to a credit card card maybe. But in even accepting the a Splitwise payment from someone means giving your DOB along with you bank account information. I simpy don’t trust this or any other startup to protect my data sufficiently. Zelle has been vetted by dozens of banks and I’m even skeptical of them. Have your identity stolen just once and you’ll feel the same guaranteed

Loved but the subscription update was a massive drawback. I’ve loved the app for the past few years and think it’s an amazing product, but the recent features limitations imposed on the free version that can only be unlocked by paying, have been a massive drawback for me. When all my friends are trying to handle expense from a group trip for example, it’s a pain that we all have to deal with these limitations. And obviously we all don’t all individually want to pay for a subscription. I’ve honestly just resorted back to using a regular spreadsheet because all the blockers/restrictions on the free version have been such a pain. I don’t want another subscription and don’t use the product often enough to justify paying.

Splitwise doesn’t work. We used Splitwise for our France trip. It was confusing and not user friendly. When it came to settling up, it excluded some people’s entire balances. I had to spreadsheet the whole thing to get it right. I am adding to my review. I purposefully turned off the Simplify Debts feature because when turned on, you cannot trace the netting of the activity on the app. Confusing. Also when an entry is deleted, it shows both the original entry as deleted and the entry to delete deleted. Confusing. Also anyone can alter another member’s information. It does occasionally notify you of that, but not consistently. Again, confusing. I was on the free app, but I wouldn’t go pro because my experience was so bad on it. Our group began to not trust the app.

Great app, terrible monetization practices!. The Splitwise app is great for everything you’d expect to need it for, but the recent decision to add a daily expense limit is both terrible from a functionality perspective and also was poorly communicated to users. I, and I think many other users, often use Splitwise for trips and other short term expense tracking where there are many different small expenses that need to be split up. This means that I’m often not using the app for months at a time and then need to add 20+ expenses all at once. With the daily expense limit, this is pretty much impossible. No way am I going to go back day after day and add a small chunk of expenses. And paying for pro is kind of silly because I only use the app every so often. Further, rolling out this change with essentially no warning is just rude. Why??

Premium Subscription Useless Unless Everyone Buys. The main pull of getting the premium subscription is so you can set a default split of 60%/40% for example. You’d think this would make every expense entered into a group at this split. But, the split would only be set for the people who pay $3/month. So, even if you pay the subscription, not all entries will have correct split if others without the subscription add their own expenses. $60/year for two people to set a default split is not worth the price considering it can be done manually. Otherwise, the app is great. Wouldn’t pay for it though!

Erratic-unsatisfied. Every single month you guys split my bills so erratically. Your app constantly makes mistakes.. my inquiry is whether I’m Being blocked from portions of my group account because I feel like either your app is absolutely pointless and flaw or absurdly that it does not do its task properly in any way other than the clean look of it. Every single month there have been comically large mistakes on your part. I need to know whether your app is the most inefficient algorithm or program I have ever used in my entire life OR my roommates are trying to hide real bill prices? If it is the latter than your app is cleverly designed to be fair and is difficult to alter with and so a great tool or (I’m being very sincere and not intentionally malicious) this app is so pointless I would suggest to anyone who is thinking of using it that they would be better of PAYING for a remedial calculator rather than downloading this for FREE.

Worst app I’ve ever used. This UX is terrible. You can’t see your individual payouts from each person, nor how much they owe you. If someone deletes the expense you charged them, it deletes it for everyone else and then you have to charge everyone again. You cannot see how much you paid all together, nor how much in total you owe. The list of payouts they present is very messy and disorganized. Also, the group and non group expenses are confusing, because apparently you have to choose the group and then unclick names, if you do non group expenses, it doesn’t show on the other users end. Referring to a UX such as Venmo is something you guys should do. It comes second nature to people and would be an easy experience to have a similar UX to Venmo that is more clean and will be an easier transition for new users to understand.

Math ain’t mathin. This app is a great idea in theory but does not work as well in practice. We used it for a large group and it was always completely inaccurate when people added expenses. Charges would show up in one place and not another. It would say people owed for something but when you expand the option they were not listed on that transaction. More transactions would be added but the outstanding balances not updated. Some people kept saying that “it works when you really think about it” which I feel like we should not have to do. On top of that, unless you pay for premium, you only get like 4 transactions a day. Overall, clunky and inaccurate and we ended up needing to make our own spreadsheet offline.

Once-great-app, now almost unusable for non-paying users. I have loved and used Splitwise for more than a decade - using it for various purposes (apartment roommates, friends in a new city, trips etc.) and I’ve felt an intense loyalty to an app that I felt had grown up with me. But having recently tried to use it for a family trip I am forced to admit that I will not be using, or recommending, this app in future. My main issue with the app is that it has now placed a limit of 3-5 entries per day for a non-premium user. This is frequently insufficient - and forces me to keep a tally on a note which I then copy over to splitwise. That’s absolutely not worth having an app - a simple spreadsheet could easily do that job. I am also not a user who is absolutely against the idea of paying for apps that add value. But the pricing has to mirror the use case! Splitwise’s pricing is wildly outrageous, particularly for users planning to use it for trips/vacations. Most such users can expect to use the app actively for 2-3 weeks - $5/month is (imho) too much for such occasional use. I am sorry to move away for now - but hopefully the app will make tweaks to its pricing/free tier features in future.

Great App!. I have used it twice. The first time with good results. Second time was not effective. You have to have everyone participating to be effective. The first time a friend was the person who entered the amounts owed for each of 4 people. I didn’t do the work just paid out what I owed. The second time was between 2 people-myself and another. The other person was to be entering the amounts owed each day. She (my adult daughter) didn’t ask me for receipts/I didn’t offer receipts so at the end of our 12 day European trip, we only had entered the first day of travel. By the end of 12 days, many countries with foreign currency, we called our expenses even.

Subscription Required - End of an Era. For years, Splitwise was a great app for conveniently splitting expenses among friends, roommates, trip-goers, but has recently neutered the free version of the app and lost many long-time users. Splitwise now has a daily limit of adding 3 expenses per day. If you want to add more, they require you to subscribe for $5 a month. This is extremely inconvenient and impractical if you’re logging shared expenses at the end of the month or during a busy trip/vacation. Instead of just managing your finances all at once and as needed, you must now make it a daily chore. (They also didn’t announce the change to users at all before enacting it; I only found out when I ran into the new limit.) This simply isn’t worth the cost when actual free apps like Tricount, Settle Up, and more exist.

Don’t keep a group too long after changing members!. I started a SplitWise group for crew coming to my boat. Over a few months there were 8 people involved. Some only in the beginning, some only in the middle, some only at the end. The only people involved in the group at the end had balances, everyone else was settled. I upgraded to Pro so that everything could be converted to USD instead of the three other currencies that we used while sailing, but there was an unavoidable error due to people not being in the group anymore. Hoping for a refund of the Pro cost. If the Pro functionality doesn’t work, a refund is due. ADVICE: Only keep groups with the same people involved. Changing people, settle the group, then start a new one. (Kinda defeats the purpose!)

Great app, not so great business model. I would have stayed if there’s a one time payment option or free with ads. I understand developers need to make money, but I’m only using this app maybe 4 times a year without the fancy split option, I cannot justify the subscription price tag with the effort I’m saving here, it’s better than the spreadsheet but not by a lot honestly. I hope the business model will be reconsidered. The free mode is allowing 3 entries per day, this makes the app practically unusable, tbh this is a very bad way of incentivizing users to subscribe. Honestly I think free with ads would bring in more revenue.

I had a +$5000 balance and had no ide. I didn’t realize Splitwise was adding to a local account and was NOT sending received funds to my bank as they had been before. I did not ask to be signed up for this new “service”. You would THINK they would make your balance more visible or easy to notice. But no, they intentionally hid it just out of the way so that people will be less likely to happen to find it. It is NOT seen in the account tab. Instead it is in that little icon at the top left that looks more like a calendar than any kind of wallet I’ve ever seen. And even then the balance is totally missable. -2 stars for using this insidious “dark pattern” -1 more star for it being bad enough that I personally fell for it. The name for it is even terrible - they don’t name the service something recognizable like “Wallet” - it’s called “Splitwise Pay”, which is not indicative of a storage area for gathered funds at ALL. -1 more star. I thought my money was just dwindling, which is NOT what should be happening with a money app. The daily limit of inputting transactions and weekly limit of $2000 withdraws is also frustrating when I want to sit down and do finance stuff.

Great App! Very Useful. I travel 5-8 times a year all over the world and my friends come along too. I highly recommend this app because no matter where in the world i am, i can add expense on the go and even take pics of the receipt. I then can split it right there between my friends. Sometimes we i’ll split the charges on our credit card if we’re dining but most times we split on splitwise especially when you friends are on a budget but didn’t have enough $ to enjoy other fun activities at least i can loan them and track it then be repaid in time. it’s a great app and i always use it as my go to app! thanks so much for this.
