Bug ID - Insect Identifier Comments & Reviews 2026

Horrible. I purchased this to identify a fly that was in my basement that looked like a large mosquito. The app was way off. I then used it to identify a bee on my window. I wanted to see if it was a honey bee. The app didn’t even come close. Thought it was a spider and then a fly. Don’t waste your money. Not worth the $39 annual fee.

Description. I like how it easily identifies above with a picture. That’s a great feature, but the description is a little too, Scientific. What I mean by that is not all of us understand the terminology used for these insects. Not saying I’m uneducated, but it’s nice to just have a quick precise description, other than getting in to verbiage that I’d have to look up to understand situation with the insect better. Thee than that. Pretty interesting for sure.

Doesn’t ID and isn’t free. There were so many pop-ups I accidentally must’ve hit subscribe and now I can’t get my $39 back. Also, it doesn’t identify accurately.

LIFE-SAVER❤️. You don’t even know how stressed I was before getting this app😫 I live in an area with a rich insect life, which really freaks me out as a pet owner. I’m always scared my cat may be in danger because of an accidentally swallowed spider or god forbid any toxic bug. That’s why I needed an app that would help me identify bugs 100% accurately and tell me if they’re cat safe. 😊🤌 Thanks to Bug ID, I don’t have to spend hours on google trying to match the bug I saw in the kitchen with the photos on the internet. This app tells me all I need to know about the insects around me, which I’m 100% satisfied with🔝🔝🔝

Spiders. ?

App is not free. This App is not free as advertised only free to down load bu cost to use

“Free” trial? No way.. The app works ok, but I don’t need it. There’s no way to cancel the subscription! I have three days. An honest vender would make that possible.

Abysmal. Changes the results with each scan. Misleading information. Always says the picture is too blurry. Very picky. When you come across an insect it’s not always possible to get the best photo. Improve this app because I will be deleting in the meantime.

Changed identity of bug with each picture. I got this to figure out what’s in my shower that keeps popping up, I took three pictures of the same bug one after another and got three different result. Now this would be acceptable if the app says it wasn’t sure but with each try it had it listed as over 90% accuracy. With one bug, and three completely different guesses, they can’t all be 90-95% accuracy. It just gave me 3 different small brown bugs. I already knew that. The first one it said was “ant” I know that a freaking ant looks like, it was not an ant. Useless for my needs

This app is LIT!. Super easy to use and helps me ID bugs FAST. I can save my finds in collections—perfect for my bio class and hiking adventures. Love how it tells me if bugs are harmless. Deets on insects make this app LIT!

Not good. Poor user interface. And it’s really not free — a subscription fee kicks in after 3 day trial and there’s no clear and easy way to cancel the trial. Bad, bad, bad.

Not even close. Not close to actual pic

Kept telling me a beetle was bed bugs. See title

Perfect tool for entomologists! 🐞. As an entomology student, Bug ID really makes it easier to complete my tasks! The identification is very accurate, and the descriptions are useful even for me. I also like the collections feature; it's very convenient to save insects from different places that I need to explore.

Great for nature explorers!. I've been using Bug ID for some time now, and it's pretty great. The app is a breeze to use, making it a snap to identify any insect I find. It’s very convenient to store my discoveries in collections, which is perfect for my entomology studies and research. But even if you’re not that into bugs, I think it’ll come in handy for anyone who has a garden or just worried if any insect can be harmful or dangerous. So yeah, I recommend it for anyone interested in entomology like me or just curious about the creepy crawlies around them!

Way Wrong. The match doesn’t even come close to matching the bug in the photos

Required to subscribe for free trial. To unlock the “free 3 day trial” you must subscribe to a monthly auto renewal of $6.99. These apps are hoping a significant portion of their free trial users will forget to unsubscribe. Just make the app 99¢ a month from day one with a 24hr unsubscribe trial period and I am good. At that point I know what I am signing up for and the cost is low enough to ignore. Not an issue for this app per-se but Apple should create an all you can eat subscription service for all $1.99 a month and less apps.

So fast!. Bug ID is so fast! I took a pic of this creepy-crawly and within seconds it told me it was a black widow spider. Scary! but good to know. The app even showed me what to do if I see one again. It's like having a bug expert in my pocket. I love how easy it is to use. Just snap a photo and you get all this cool info about the bug. My kids love playing bug detective with it too. We're learning so much about insects now. One thing though - sometimes it gets confused if the bug isn't fully in focus. But overall, this app is awesome.

Teaches how to coexist with insects. I recently moved to a house not far from the forest. Unfortunately, along with the fresh air and bird songs, my house also got filled with insects. I don’t feel good about killing them, so my friend advised me to download an app that identifies insects and even tells if they benefit people. I’ve lived for 30 years and didn’t know that insects can be good for people lol. I downloaded a few apps, and honestly, Bug ID is my favorite. The insect descriptions are really detailed, covering everything you might want to know. I especially like that the app indicates whether each insect is harmful to people, animals, plants, or other insects. For instance, I found a frightening and ugly (sorry) centipede, and it turned out it’s very useful for a house because it eats mosquitoes. Now, I look at it and comfort myself that it’s good, and it doesn’t look so bad anymore. So, the app is great! I recommend it to everyone who is looking for a way to coexist with insects!

Insect identification. It’s hard to tell sometime whether it’s accurate even with the percentages. Sometimes it will tell you no insectsfound and I’m looking at the insects.

Cannot delete my account. Please allow me to delete this account

Tricky App. This is not free. I accidentally paid for a year. Not only that—it doesn’t even tell you if it’s poisonous or not.

Good luck with small insects. Some fire ant sized insect fell on me from AC vent; it was dark red with some coloration on the body. took pictures on white counters. Pictures too blurry for ID Try to take picture inside app, no zoom. How can an app id a 1/4” object with no zoom? Good thing this app has 3-day trial. Deleting and canceling

Different result every time. I kept resubmitting the same photo and the identification came up different every time.

Don’t do it!. Do not download or use unless you plan to pay the subscription. Free trial is not real.

NOT FREE.. Despite its claim, you cannot use app without purchasing a subscription.

Joke. This app is a joke. I took a picture twice of a termite and both times it gave me critters that look nothing like it. One was some scorpion tail bug and the other was a black and red spotted bug that isn’t indigenous to the USA. Also, it is 7 bucks a week! Wow! No thanks!

Not one correct ID. Trial run- entered several known samples and this was woefully incorrect on every try.

$$$. If you Google search your image… it won’t charge you!

Subscription scam. I thought this was a free App. I opened it to look up ONE insect and never used it again. I just realized I’ve been charged every week for over a year for a subscription I didn’t know I had. Did not approve money coming out of my account. Couldn’t get my money back. 👎🏻

Ty. Love it!!! Best bug app I’ve used!!!!

Insect encyclopedia. My child needed to make a project about insects, which was quite challenging for me since I'm afraid of insects and know very little about them. Another mom from school suggested trying the Bug ID app, as it not only identifies insects but also provides detailed information about them. The biggest advantage of the app is its clear and user-friendly interface. I used it to identify a few insects in our yard with my son, and then he was able to finish the task on his own. The insect descriptions are incredibly thorough, resembling a real encyclopedia. They cover everything from appearance and distribution to their impact on other organisms. This app has been a true blessing for us!

Not the Best. Many photos you will take will not be recognized or it will be misidentified. Even searching them by name doesn’t always work, Nor will photos from camera roll “image is too small”

No match. Spider didn’t show up in your list of options and I couldn’t find a place to input descriptors

Payment plan pop ups make it unusable. I was able to take 2 pictures/ 2 ids with this app (they were accurately identified at least) before a payment plan started popping up every time I take a photo. When I close off of it, it deletes the picture I’ve taken. It is not a free ID app as advertised, which I understand is sometimes necessary, but the kicker is deleting my photos and constant pop ups.

Worked. I needed to quickly identify a red-backed jumping spider that had bitten me. Even though the picture I had wasn't very good, this worked! It was a relief to know that the spider wasn't very dangerous.

size. I have a perfectly big picture of the big but it says it’s to small. Does not meet my needs. The bug is practically the whole picture and says it’s too small.

So not free!. Purchased app after a Google search for Australian Spider identifier came up with this free Apple Bug ID free app. I went through the motions and ended up paying AU59.99 for the year. On top of that the spider I apparently took a photo of was apparently a mouse spider that live on the ground and is 12mm long - that had a 70% confidence. The one that was 10% was more accurate but details on size and aggression levels were missing.

Be Aware this is NOT FREE!. They advertise a free trial but when I couldn’t make it work I deleted within minutes they charged $59.99 and refused a refund. I will never use it so have paid $60 for NOTHING.

Identifying spider. It literally said housefly for a giant house spider

Completely useless.. This app is completely useless! I took a picture of a common beetle & it states it’s a dangerous spider. Lol
