INaturalist App Reviews

New app is almost unusable. INaturalist is awesome and I have been using it from the beginning. The new app set up is really good and the capabilities within the app are great too. However I almost never use inat anymore because it’s not even worth opening up. 1 out of 10 time it will open and be usable to do any of the things I am looking to do. The other 9 of 10, half of the time it won’t allow any button pushing and the other half it’ll allow you to get to what you clicked on but won’t ever load the page.

Cannot search for locations in Utah. You cannot tag photos with arbitrary locations if they were not geotagged by your camera, unless it is a “place” in inat (which, btw, inat actively tries to prevent you from creating, stating that it will slow the site down for everyone). You could do this in the old app, you can do this on the web. Just not the new app. Instead of acknowledging the problem they just tried to convince me that my photography workflow, that I’ve been using for years (successfully with inat), is wrong. No skin off my back. I never needed to contribute in the first place. I am not going to over complicate my workflow and add hours of processing time just to contribute my data to a community that doesn’t seem to want it anyway.

Does the job, except for one problem. The animal/plant scanning isn't always accurate but it gets close much of the time and definitely helps get much much closer to IDing than if I didn't have it. There's one issue though, when uploading pictures to the community there's an optional notes section which is the only way to clarify things about the picture. But there's a recent glitch where your keyboard will come up for a second and then go back down, you can't edit until you get lucky and it stays one time. I've noticed this affects Grammarly and SwiftKey more, and Gboard and the default iOS keyboard less. Not sure if this a them problem or an app problem. I've not seen this elsewhere

Great Organization, Terrible App. I have use iNat for more than 4 years and really like the concept and community. I’m even a monthly contributor to the organization. The web app and iNat Classic are both good. This app, the iNaturalist app, though, is really awful. I’m not sure why Apple hasn’t removed it from their store. It was never good but it now is completely non-functional on my iPhone 14 Pro Max running the latest update. I’ve read the iNat forum and it seems like my issues are very common even though iNat’s employees say the app is great and runs as designed. My first iPhone was an iPhone 4 and since then, I don’t think there has ever been an app that I wanted to work more than this one yet I have finally given up and removed it from my phone. I really expected better. Don’t patronize iNaturalist by trying this app. Use the Classic app or the web page. Make them fix this one.

Makes the best nature app out there even better!. I’ve been a dedicated iNaturalist user since 2018, and it is the one app I can’t live without. iNaturalist Next has really taken it to a whole new level! Love being able to see whether I’m getting a good read on a plant before I even take the picture. It takes a little getting used to, but overall I’m living it.

Good but fails to load sometimes. This new iNaturalist app overall is really good. Compared to the old iNaturalist app it’s more in depth and you can overall do more which is great! The only problem for me is getting into the app is annoying since it often just keeps on loading and sometimes never finished loading. It gets annoying after a while. Compare this to the old app and that loads almost instantly. Hopefully it can be fixed to become less buggy and load quicker in the future!

Brilliant. I came across this amazing app after listening to the Joe Rogan experience with Paul Stamets!! Absolutely one of the most must have apps for anybody interested in our beautiful world. I highly recommend parents with kids. That own cell phones to download this app, so they can navigate nature and everything there is to learn about it. Please do not hesitate and download this app. It’s completely free, and if you’d like to donate, it helps and support the platform.

What happened to the ID?. I have been using iNaturalist for years now. Simply just a casual user who wants to know more about the world around. Loved how the original app almost always got the ID correct, and then could be confirmed later by others. Now, I have uploaded the same pictures to both versions of the app, and the old app has given me an accurate ID all three times, and the new app has failed all three times. Yes, I have even turned on advanced mode. Again, same pics is the key issue here. I will not recommend switching over until this is addressed. Will be more than happy to come and change my review once this is accomplished.

The most essential app on my phone. iNat has entirely changed my life and how I approach and understand nature. This app is an essential tool I use whenever I’m out in the field and I need to identify an unfamiliar species of plant or insect. All photos submitted via the app contribute to the world’s largest crowdsourced dataset of biodiversity, supporting countless projects in wildlife biology, conservation science and ecology. And what’s best, the app is entirely open source. The new iOS app could still use some UX improvements but it’s vastly superior to the previous one in terms of functionality and is getting closer to feature parity with the website. Keep up the great work!

I like this but... I’ve used Classic for a while - upgraded my phone and saw this new app so was excited! And i really like the design, focus on photos, the easier ability to add multiple photos! It rocks! However - i keep having the glitch where it will not let me add locations. Neither button will work. I checked all the location settings and they are all allowed but I still need to manually set. The other issue is that I really liked the old explore page which was a little bit more compact? I would really enjoy a compact mode with the photos akin to the older version. Other than that! App is really good!

GET THIS APP!. This amazing app is one that I believe everyone should have, nature-nerd or not. It’s like Pokémon go except more fun and it actually leads to positive change in the world. The identification works great and if it can’t give you an ID right away, be patient and people will give educated guesses once your submission is reviewed. I can’t think of a single complaint, this is where it’s at. P.S. if you download the Seek app (which can be paired with INaturalist) you can get species ID even with no signal

Great app, strange lack of features. First off, you are unable to copy and paste coordinates when editing a location. It doesn’t let you search—on the other hand, the choice to use Apple Maps is a grave error, as it is quite possibly the worst navigation app to use for outdoor activities. I tried using all sorts of coordinate formats and it doesn’t seem to recognize any of them. Once this is fixed, the app will be far better off!

Amazing app but... I do not like the new updates with google Gemini AI technology there are people who know their stuff on this app and confront you very bluntly if your right or wrong you do not need AI if you get an identification wrong just put in your description you need help IDing un-confirmed observations and eventually they’ll get seen. It is an app for learning and just for fun and enjoyment. Edit: I was apparently mistaken and given false information thanks to the response to this review I will be editing this review, I still don’t really enjoy the use of AI despite it being a helpful tool it takes up many resources no matter the platform but knowing it’s not from a massive corporate world is a little bit more reassuring!

Thoughts. Overall, love this app to death. However, I think a more intuitive/user friendly system of adding friends/followers would be super helpful. I also do like the idea of seeing your observations in categories like seek. I think the projects page could be updated a bit with a more clear indicator if the project is active or not. Like for example I still see nearby projects show up with 2016 in the title. And I’m not sure if it’s still being used at all.

Buggy. I uploaded my first observations using the new app and the time defaulted to the time of upload which is not when I observed the organisms uploaded. This can be problematic. Also, I filtered my map to my observations and they were showing up in completely different places on the map. Using the explore feature is too complex now. I have to tap a million things just to search for one thing. The way the map shows up drives me bonkers too. I want to see pins like the old app, not shaded squares. When I zoom in, I get pins but it’s too buggy. I am pleased with the notifications being better than the old app and that I can see my coords, but prefer to use the old app for everything else.

Don’t fix what isn’t broken. I’ve used the old app for a long time now and i do not like the new one. When you upload a photo it automatically suggests something and doesn’t have the same option to put in what you know it is, you can only scroll through suggestions. If you have a photo of a bird in a tree it will only pick up the tree and you’re screwed :/ The old one is great, i never had any issues. It feels like you switched to the “modern” designs apps have now where they do everything for you and there is no customization/less choices. Genuinely if you guys take down the old app I will exclusively use the desktop version, this isn’t unusable it’s just aggressively mediocre

iNaturalist is buggy. I deleted it out of frustration. I prefer iNaturalist classic. In iNaturalist, one of my entries was relabeled with a different species and there was no record of who relabelled it. I had chosen the genus name, a iNat user had suggested a species, but the entry was labeled with a different species with no ID on how that occurred. An entry from August shows fine in iNaturalist but now iNaturalist was bugging me for a location. In viewing it in iNaturalist Classic, the location shows. While in Classic updated the privacy to obscured, thinking that might update iNaturalist. Nope! iNaturalist changed the entry from a pen symbol that indicated a missing location to a broken circle arrow “failure to upload” symbol, the location field still empty.

Works OK but a Downgrade From Classic Design. App feels over designed. Feels like designers focused on form over function, most notably uploading multiple pictures for a single observation feels clunky. The map of observations is no longer color coded which impacts readability. Also personally not a fan of the rounded “soft” look of the UI design. I know it’s in vogue with UI design right now but it makes the app feel “trendy” and “cheap”to me, I’m not a fan in general but I feel like it especially clashes with what I liked about the old app UI design which was more simple and focused. There are some things I really like about it like the little icons of different animals are cute. Probably some of my issues are due to the fact that the old app worked fine for me and I am more used to using it. So thank you for not forcing me to use the new app because I’m not a huge fan!

Adding Observations is a Pain. Been using iNaturalist since I was in college. The changes made to adding observations is a bit of a pain. I often forget that when I add a group of photos, it’s not adding them all into one observation but rather into multiple individual observations. It is a HUGE pain needing to go back and compile them into one observation and at that point my app starts to freeze on a blank page when I remove the excess photos to just have one observation. I feel the old iNaturalist app was easier to add observations in.

Best app (some suggestions though). This is the best app for identifying… well anything! And it is created by a community of dedicated people who love what they do and that makes it 100x better. Ok enough sucking up LOL, those tabs that you use to search up some broad groups like Plants, insects, Mammals, etc etc (the ones with the lil icons) could yall add ones for Myriapods, Crustaceans, Cnidarians, and Echinoderms as it would be super helpful instead of having to manually type it in pls :) (also yes this app is still #1)

Prairiemac. I do like iNaturalist, but it is a finicky app. I am not sure why, but it is very hard to get my iPhone to get properly centered on the plant and have it show both the genus and species of the plant. Sometimes when both show up on screen the picture still comes back as unidentified, either to only the genus, sometimes just to an order even though a second earlier both the genus and species showed on the screen. I do not know why that is happening. Other times I have gotten it to take the picture and record the identification. It does not seem to improperly identify plants and that is a big plus.

Need to fix the app glitches. I love iNaturalist. I believe in its mission, I use it everyday for fun and as a professional ecologist. They need to fix the glitches and nearly every day the whole app freezes and I cannot select anything or navigate to any of the panes, or uploads will continually fail to load. This has been an issue for the past year with no fixes. The new updated app has some great features but if they don’t fix these basic usability issues I won’t be surprised if they lose more casual users. Please put resources towards this.

It’s nice, but they should’ve kept some of the older features.. The new App is really nice, but it try’s to identify surrounding plants when I’m trying to make an observation of a bird or insect. So you can still find the observation Map, but it’s more difficult to use. It starts on a a graph system that I don’t really care about. I’d rather have the original location pins like before. You can get to where it shows you the pins but only if you’re super zoomed in on the map, and it’s not even color coded like the original one. BRING BACK THE COLORED MARKERS!!! I miss it, and sure a lot of others miss it to. Also make it more easily findable for others! Still love you guys, and will continue using the app, but my rating won’t change until the user friendly features are brought back!

Engaging — Like Real Pokemon Go!. I love iNaturalist, and have used it as well as Seek for a few years. For me, it’s a lot like a game, like if Pokemon Go was about real flora/fauna/fungi! I love to use it when I go on trips to explore what new environments have to show me, but I also love to be a part of my local naturalist communities, documenting and appreciating what makes my home special! It could be great for getting kids to engage with their environment more, especially if they usually prefer mobile games (i’m looking at you, Ipad-kid parents.)

After much effort, I’m coming around to the new version. The update was highly unintuitive and spent a long time trying to make it work before concluding most features were gone. After further investigating and talking to friends (including someone who knows the iNat team), I discovered some hidden settings to get the intuitive functionalities, like being able to group photos, Advanced Mode (THIS SHOULD MORE OBVIOUSLY BE OFFERED FROM THE START FOR DATA QUALITY REASONS), etc. Even more weeks of forcing myself to use the new version and I’m finally finding several features I think are actual improvements, including the batch uploads (once you figure out the 10 unintuitive steps to do it) and the obviously better AI ID. Just please work on making things more intuitive for users where the incoming data won’t end up constantly being low-quality

I want to love it but annoying issues. I get regular crashes when I attempt to suggest an ID to the point where I don’t even want to ID things in the app. Every time it crashes it kicks you out of the project and you lose all of the filters you have set. It works just fine in a web browser without issue. The other thing that irks me is that there’s no option to mark observations as “reviewed” in the app when you’re IDing things so you have to scroll back through everything you reviewed but didn’t ID every time the app crashes.

Overall Great! Two Suggestions. I’m very happy to see some of Seek’s best features integrated into iNaturalist. I’ll use iNaturalist much more now, especially since the AI camera is soooo much faster compared to Seek. Overall, I think this is a great next step for the app and have enjoyed using it so far. I hope the developers will consider two additions. First, it would be helpful to be able to copy the coordinates from one observation to another in the app. It is super annoying to have to zoom in on a map while looking at a rural area without a lot of landmarks to find the right spot when I could just copy and paste from another nearby observation. The search function also didn’t bring up some towns in Colorado as an option so the location/map feature seems a bit incomplete/unwieldy. (I’m also not sure why some of my observations didn’t have a location when the observations a few minutes later did.) Second, it would be helpful to be able to crop photos in the app itself. Otherwise, thank you for these great updates!

This is my dream app. I’ve been using Seek and iNaturalist in tandem since they came out. As a wildlands manager, ethnobotanist, and backpacker I continue to try every species ID app out there and these have been far and away the best (though Cornell’s Merlin app combined with eBird is great for bird sound ID). This app takes it up a level by essentially combining the two. I can’t express how impressed I’ve been with the developers continue improvement over the years, really listening to the advice people offer, and I just want to express my gratitude. Thank You

GUI Improvements. Tool tips and labeling icons is IMPORTANT! The number one issue with the new app is the GUI, whoever made it is a technology native and put no effort into making sure that those less tech savvy can easily navigate. Those more used to a windows based OS find the new GUI infuriatingly convoluted. The ease of access to previously heavily used features is lacking. The new app GUI is confusing, poorly laid out and does not default to settings most users are familiar with. While more powerful, you can clearly see the launch has been disastrous. The “next” app should have been labeled “pro” since it gives easier access to high level tools and is genuinely more difficult to navigate. I think building from the interface of the first app should have been/currently be a major focus. Instead of what feels like starting from scratch in designing navigation.

Terrible in general.. I attempted to make my first observation using this new and "improved" version of the app. Problems started immediately. Firstly I selected my first photo, as I was going to upload multiple photo's of my observation, and the system went crazy and jumped through hoops to take me to an AI identification page, so only allowing me to upload 1 photo. Secondly, this AI identification was wildly incorrect multiple times, as I attempted to try again with different photos of my observation from different angles, and I got 3 different very incorrect ID's (I simply wanted to upload a critter that I'm already very familiar with, just simply had not made an uploaded observation before). I've been an avid outdoorsmen my entire life, I was raised in it, and frankly I do not see any positive outcomes of using AI identification, in fact if it's doing this with my observations than it seems to me that it will in fact cause harm and detriment when it comes to proper scientific accuracy in these matters....

My favorite app. iNaturalist is one of the best uses of the iPhone - I love making observations and am fascinated by the range maps, learning about new species and subspecies and disjunct populations all the time. The new app makes batch uploads easier, and I mostly like the new interface, but sadly it’s just not useable. Most of the time none of the buttons work, it’s unbelievably laggy and frozen, or won’t load IDs at all. I’ve tried uninstalling, quitting, etc, but it seems inherent to the app. So I’ve gone back to classic for now.

Definitely an improvement!. The new app design is really good, I especially like that you can look at species profiles in app now as that was one of my biggest issues with the old app. I haven’t had any of the loading issues other users have mentioned, and have found the new app very easy to navigate. Only thing that would be better is if there was an easier way to go through notifications, maybe a slide or scroll feature in opened notifications as it often takes a while to clear them.

Exactly what I’ve been waiting for. I’m so happy! Most of my pictures are on my phone and the old app worked nicely but was a bit limited. The new app has so many more features and is very similar to the website. I’m very pleased! Two small bugs: if I go to suggest an ID on an audio clip, the whole app freezes. If I’m on the search menu to select an ID to select, sometimes when I tap on the result I want it will not accept the tap at all, or read it as if I tapped something else, even if I made double sure to wait til the menu was done loading. Very happy with the app, though, and it works very smoothly otherwise!

IDs Are Worse?. I’ve used the previous iNat app for years, and I do like this new streamlined interface. However, it seems like the IDs of my observations are way more generalized than they used to be. Before I would get a usually pretty precise species ID, and now it just is usually “this is a flowering plant.” I also really miss being able to upload multiple photos of the same thing to one observation. TLDR; I like the new interface, but significant features from the original app seem to be lacking.

overwhelming auto-suggest. jumping in here immediately from the old inat app + web browser user to upload a picture of a bird i saw in a tree today and i'm immediately swarmed with different options for the tree's ID. I'm sure that it was plenty accurate if i was looking to ID the tree but i just wasn't! i could go back and finagle the ID but i did have to save it with a tree ID first. just a bit too much extra messing around if i wanted to upload something quickly. I do like the new UI changes otherwise though

great app, just one bug that bothers me. I have used the original iNat app for a few years now and I really like iNat Next too! While it took me a little bit to learn the new interface, I find myself using iNat Next more often than the old app. The one thing that bothers me is that often times, I am out in the field and unable to upload my observations immediately, so I keep them as drafts. What happens is that my photos for draft observations disappear, so I have to go back to my camera roll and reupload them to their right observations. When I’m logging many observations at a time, it gets frustrating. Other than that, I am an iNat Next enjoyer 🌱🌈💅

It’s not Seek… yet. Been a huge fan of the iNaturalist community for many years and absolutely loved Seek. While I’m a fan of the new app and the confidence ratings, it falls short of Seek’s UI. I enjoyed having a catalog of all my observations, which I could sort through by kingdom and class. The new list feels cluttered. Would also love to see some of the badge challenges come back. Still a phenomenal companion app and would recommend to anyone.

Not as good as classic. Would often use iNaturalist to verify species. Uploading a photo is difficult because you can’t put in the photo details before uploading. You can’t select more than one photo at first either, just automatically starts analyzing the one you select. I have a nature social media account and would use iNaturalist to grab the correct scientific name but you can’t select and copy text anymore either. Glad the updated app is separate than the classic and can go back to that version.

Extremely Slow and Clunky. I got this newer version of iNat so I could upload multiple observations at a time, something the classic app doesn’t have. This new UI was really clunky and confusing to pick up. I don’t understand why they didn’t just use the same/similar interface as the classic. Or just add the feature of adding multiple observations as an option for the classic. This new version is unbearably slow and constantly freezes. The old version is fast and I had none of these problems. I love iNat and the community but this app just feels like a bit of a regression of the classic, all my friends who use this new app have the same issues.

New version not functional. I’ve been forced to resume using the classic version because more often than not, no part of the screen interface is responsive. There’s one exception: I’m able to scroll the grid of my observations. It’s just not a functioning app. This is on iOS 26.2.1 & the app is up-to-date. When the app was previously working, the explore/search feature was a little perplexing. When you tap the “explore” icon, the app provides no indication of what the user needs to do next to conduct a search. Somehow I discovered that tapping a blank area at the top of the screen would cause a search interface to pop up, but there was absolutely nothing in the UI to guide the user to this feature.

Love iNaturalist but this app continues to lag and freeze. I’m a huge user of iNat but find myself using the classic app more than this one because of all the lag and freezing, particularly with the “activity” button. This has been a known issue for many months, but still no updates or progress. There also needs to be a much easier, clearer way to mark observations captive/cultivated and to see when suggestions are way out of range so those of us who do identifications for others(which would be great to be able to do from the app) don’t have to go in and clean up the mess later.

They are trying to do too much.. The new iNat is just too much, and the way you upload an observation is awful. Rest in peace to people who like to add more than one photo for observations, you’ll have an extra two or three buttons now, and you’ll have to just always baby sit the settings to make sure you aren’t posting duplicates! And now on the iNat classic I no longer can look at my older observations, and I find it odd that they took away that feature around the same time this rolled out. I love iNat, but if there’s ever a competitor, I’m going to gladly give them a shot. RIP to iNaturalist 2025.

Buggy on iPhone. I love iNaturalist have been a loyal member of the community for 8+ years. I was excited when this newest app came out, but it has been very buggy the entire time I’ve had it on my iPhone 14 Pro. The observation function and other buttons at the bottom are often unresponsive. Today it’s unresponsive even if I log out and log in again. It’s also unresponsive if I delete the app and reinstall it. I and other users have let the developers know. The developers are great and very engaged with problems, but they’ve been unable to replicate the issues on the devices they have. Now a couple years in to using the new app, I’m going to delete it and go back to iNat Classic. It’s a shame because the new functions (when they work, which is rarely) are a big improvement. I hope the developers can get ahold of a phone that can replicate the problems and figure it out. For now, I’ll use the old app, which works just fine.

Good But Has Issues. I’ve used iNat for a few years, mostly for my Bachelor’s degree, and I’ve always enjoyed it. However, with the new version I’ve had a few issues. The main issue being when I go to upload a picture, I can’t add a location. I have to upload the post and then go back and edit the photo to add a location. The other issue I have found is searching for a location. With the previous app, I was able to type in the coordinates in the map and was able to add the location that way. However, with this version I can’t get the map to load any location I type in, I have to manually zoom in and out on the map to get the place I need to add. I’ve tried various ways to fix this issue, including signing out and back in and then uninstalling the app and reinstalling it; neither have worked.

New app just doesn’t work. I like a lot of the features on the new app, especially being able to upload multiple observations at once, but after a couple weeks it became nearly completely unresponsive. It was not ready to launch. I will hit the observe button, and even after 30 seconds it won’t open the observation screen. None of the bottom menu buttons are responsive. It’s too slow to function. I found myself going from inatting every day to barely inatting, so I switched back to the old app. I really hope they fix it, because if I were a new user right now I wouldn’t stick around.

App struggles with normal functions. I use this app a lot and it’s been a frustrating few weeks with it seemingly freezing when opening up and trying to upload an observation(s). Even if you can get the app to select the photos you want to upload, the initial menu for uploading remains and you have to tap out of. Just now, the explore function just spins and is not functional. This is affecting users ability to upload photographs and use iNaturalist. I wouldn’t be surprised if metrics of observations have got down in the past month or so because the app is so glitchy. Don’t get me wrong- I still upload my observations, either through the main website on a computer or utilizing the classic version of the app, but this is less than ideal as this should be a breeze to work with. For people out in the field, it’s a struggle to get this to function and isn’t an option to use in real time. Monthly supporter who wants to see iNaturalist succeed!

Much prefer classic. The AI in the newer app is less accurate than classic. I find myself constantly taking high-quality photos of recognizable plants/insects only to have the suggestion be vague (class or subclass). This is frustrating because the classic app will usually ID to family or species, even when using the exact same photo. The process of editing each post to include the accurate ID is time consuming, especially when there are dozens of photos to upload. I would argue that the new iNat update is more geared to the casual observer who will then rely on the community for an accurate ID. The cost of this however is a watered-down collection of what used to be meaningful local data.

It all started with a Shrew. A few years ago, my cat proudly dragged in a dead shrew and laid it at my feet. Animal enthusiasts that I am, I looked up the species of shrew and discovered it was a species that by all accounts was not documented as having been in the area but it was DEFINITELY that particular species. Years later, it always bothered me that I was unable to actually document the existence of this shrew in my backyard and I lamented so to my brother in law…who in turn then said “I know of a way you could have documented it.” He introduced me to iNaturalist and boom. It all began. This app is awesome. It feels like a real life pokedex and is an absolute must have for people interested in flora, fauna and fungi. This new app is awesome and definitely feels cleaner than the classic app. My only (minor) complaint is the seemingly inability to add multiple photos of an observation when first documenting it. The classic app, I was able to attach multiple photos before it uploaded. This one you seem to only be able to attach one picture, then after it uploads, you can add more. But that is so minor that it really doesn’t matter. This app is a permanent staple on my phone and exactly what I was looking for. Edit: the adding multiple photos functionality is there, it just took me a bit to find it. It’s actually implemented in a very sleek way and I really like it.

Great But Lacking Features for Powerusers. So far, I'm really liking this update! The UI is a lot less clunky and is much more responsive than the old one. It took a minute to figure out how to bring back the more advanced editing, although I was somewhat disappointed when I did. What I love: - Batch upload of photos & sorting options - Easier to navigate and much more intuitive UI - Ability to save and come back to obs later without uploading them What I'm missing from the old app: - Ability to type in an address/coords for the location field (currently, only iNat Places show up and hitting enter/search does nothing if you try entering/searching for anything else) - Adding obs to projects while uploading What I would like to see that isn't in either mobile app: - Batch editing/uploading obs with same time/location/etc. Definitely a 5-star app if these things get addressed. It's already showing lots of progress!

best nature ID and science app!. As a long time iNaturalist user, the desktop version was always far superior than the iPhone app. After trying out the new and improved interface, I almost like the app better now! I like the new app but missing a super useful feature!. It’s good, I’m still going to use the old one sometimes but I like the new one. One thing I’d really like to see is more precise search options which I know was improved but I feel is missing this feature. Say I was looking for aquatic plants, being able to apply aquatic to the search criteria would be really helpful, all it has to be is species that are known to be aquatic, the individual observations don’t have to specify that they are. A search filter like this could be super helpful, like parasites, epiphytes, migratory. I don’t think it would be too hard to implement and would massively improve the search filter functions.

A step backwards. I don’t like the way the new app deals with multiple photos, and don’t like the way you can’t add to projects with the new app. -1 star for each of these defects… I’m going back to the legacy version.

New version. Fails every time I use it

No thanks. I can’t search locations anymore none of them are recognised, not even whole suburbs. The layout is not nice, all the pins are the same colour. Uninstalling.

Suggestions. I would like to use it in a way similar to instagram. But no need for likes or egotism. Maybe have options to prioritize updates from people I follow? Also we need searches with map function.

Please fix the bug. After I updated, I only can upload one single photo once. It is very inconvenient, so please fix this bug and put it as before to select 20 photos once.

The best plant / animal ID app by far. Amazing speed and accuracy, the old Seek was hopeless half the time. I would like to see better information or options surrounding privacy. What does “Open” mean? It has the exact location? I would love to be able to default to Obscured with the option to change it to Open later if I made a mistake.

The new app is insanely buggy…and not the good kind of bugs. I applaud iNaturalist for attempting to evolve their mobile app, I really do, but it’s so buggy I’m going back to the classic app and will just use the new one for help with ID. Constant issues since launch with observations showing as not being uploaded, when they have been, and uploading groups of photos, which it just wants to constantly break down into individual observations which you then have to spend time deleting and editing. No thanks.

Hard to use. If I search for a specific taxon I’m trying to find in the wild the app crashes and I have to open it up and search it again over and over. This can happen 10+ times and typing scientific names over and over takes time away from exploring. I’ve selected Perth Western Australia as my time setting but I have to still put up with the American version of the date on observations which is foreign and confusing to me as an Australian. Allow an option for the date to be the correct way and less confusing of dd/mm/yyyy. Getting the day and month backwards when tracking down seasonal wildflowers can mean I’ve driven for hours in pursuit of something that might be another month away. Allow precious searches to show up in the search bar to stop having to retype it when the app does keep closing out of my search. Saved searches. I’m chasing down native orchids. That’s all I look for. So make that a favorite I can click straight away. Or just allow the previous search to be there as a choice.

massive upgrade!. so excited you guys updated the interface! kudos to the team involved in this. i am continually in awe by the community and planet around me because of this app, so i was overjoyed to see the new look! keeping the old one running for those who are unable to adjust to the new app is also sooo wonderful, otherwise you risk losing of some of our finest! suggestions: - there should be a popup “preview” (ie show a picture/species name) when clicking on a pinpoint using the map (currently, tapping a pin brings you to the full observation log which is slow loading and lags) - the ability to edit your profile image/bio should be a feature under the “me” tab on the main page, not hidden within settings. - the filter setting is really confusing. so many toggles for different features using giant buttons that are all the same size / font makes it hard to navigate. some features on it could maybe be behind a “advanced” drop down tab with additional filters (ie. sort by specific user, wild status, etc)

A great improvement over the old app. Adds features from the desktop app that were missing from the original app. Me likey

Bugs!. Adore iNat, but I’m not sold on the new app yet. I like the look of the new app, but I have to switch back to classic for now. Here are the bugs I’ve found: - unable to upload multiple photos at a time (deal breaker) —- upload through app allows one at a time -— have tried this by select-uploading multiple photos directly from Google Photos but each photo shows up as individually uploaded listings —- particularly annoying for the person who takes hundreds of photos and has to scroll a gigantic catalogue to upload additional photos after creating a listing —- upload is slower and less smooth in new app than classic - issue with saving ID —- I’ll upload ID and hit save (also unclear on difference between save and upload); but when I upload, the ID reverts to “unknown”. So I have to go back into the listing to edit and add an ID gain. - don’t love the new ID feature. Having a separate button for search and recommendation is a little annoying. I love how in the Classic the app suggests a suspected genus, and above that is an option to search. Just some notes. Unfortunately for now the first point is a deal breaker but hopefully that gets fixed.

Map view needs major improvements. Some improvements from the original app, however there doesn’t appear to be a way to see the map view without filtering. Even then, you aren’t able to view the individual observations through the map, it’s just a marker, but you can’t see photos, comments, or the date of observation. This was how I saw all recent observations in my area, and was the most useful part of the app for me. At the moment I’m between two apps - this one is great for better interaction with other users, but the old app is the best for searching observations, which is the primary use case for iNaturalist. I’d love to see the best of both combined.

Great improvement compared to the original iNaturalist app. Great new features: - Allows batch uploading of photos into either various observations or a single one. - Option of saving observations in iNaturalist while travelling and sharing them later, upon returning home. - Other new features similar to the web version Needs improvement: - more uniform application in the app of user’s language settings

No Common Names. Seek had common names with the camera ID, why not here?

The Best There Is. There is, simply nothing that compares to iNaturalist. Not even close. It is so incredibly helpful in its species identification, very educational, and most importantly has a huge database with excess information made by one of the best, active online communities there is. Just incredible.

Good but needs improvement. Many great features that I am excited about (quicker to do multiple uploads. Unfortunately still super buggy and slow to do most things- it can’t load all my observations as I scroll and frequently glitches. Very slow response to pressing almost any button. Makes it hard to catch bird recordings. Hoping new updates bring fixes! Lots of potential for the future.

I love this app !!. This app is so great for documenting all the critters I find on my travels. I get so excited to add something to my projects. The app is easy to navigate too. I’ve been recommending it to my friends and family

Not Optimized for Tablet. The app seems great and Inat Classic absolutely needed an overhaul to make it more useful and give access to more of the website tools. But it isn’t optimized for tablet yet and is stuck with the tiny phone screen. I crop and post almost all my observations from my drawing tablet and it’s the device I use most often for leisure when I just feel like browsing other people’s observations. Unfortunately until this app becomes more compatible with devices with different screen sizes I’ll have to stick with inat classic.

Wonderful. I love the features that have been added - especially the ability to upload multiple photos and observations at once. And the additional features that were previously only available on the website. Once you figure out where things are and how to use them, it’s so powerful I haven’t had to use the website at all. Had been waiting for this for a while and have been so delighted since it arrived!

Location function is a waste of time. Didn’t realize I was saving all my entries without a location. when I went to upload them I was unable to because none were affiliated with location data. I had to individually go into all 60 entries and manually navigate to the correct location on the worldwide map to select a location. I even tried to copy and paste in coordinates, but the app did not like that. BIG waste of time

Massive Improvement!. This app brings tons of the desktop features I was missing to mobile. It looks prettier too :) iNat has been such a wonderful tool to learn about plants for me!

Not great.. I never got a straight answer it’s was always… ‘class this’ ‘order that’ never straight answer.

Great service, maybe I’m in the wrong places. I like the update, however I don’t know if the people around me just didn’t do it or abandoned ship, after updating to the new app a few months ago my explore page has dried up. The most recent uploads are my own from this spring lol.

Is it better?. Glad that they’re are bringing more features to the mobile version of the app but one problem that needs work in this app is the UI. It’s confusing and I preferred the simplicity of the old app. Maybe I’m just not be used to it but right now the older version is easier to use.

Awesome upgrade of iNaturalist!. It's finally a complete app with nowadays UI and usability!

Much improve iPhone version. I love iNat. Long time user on android. A few years ago I switched to an iPhone and the iOS version was so bad. It lacked the key features I wanted in the field. Often I would consider switchback to an android just to used the better android version of the app. This is a MUCH improved iOS app. Thank! Long awaited and happy it’s finally here!

Reducing my zoom? WHY. Why would you throttle my zoom? My phone can go 25x zoom and the app only lets me do 3x… yeah gonna get some great bird pics with that, thanks a lot. No no no it’s a great idea to put a governor on the zoom so we CANT use the full zoom on the device we paid for…. (???) effin what dude. Bunk.

Old app was better. Significant downgrade from the old app. Doesn't open automatically to nearby observations. Observation pinpoint don’t differ in color between taxa.
