Blackmagic Camera Comments & Reviews 2026
A must have app for mobile filmmaking. Whether you are familiar or not with blackmagic menu systems, this is really simple to use and a lot of features packed into a free app. It’s too good! I’ve always wanted a reliable app whenever I’d want to film something with my phone. You can load luts. Nice! First thing I noticed was that when you zoom you don’t get that exposure and weird jitters when jumping from ultrawide lens, then to wide and medium as you do in the regular camera app. I can’t wait to explore the message system in the app. Everything is just so clean as usual with BM products. Thank you, Blackmagic Design!
Nicely integrated, but potentially flawed. Initially playback of clips recorded under a display LUT worked, but now it crashes the app. I have done the full reset, rebooted, moved the LUT into the correct folder manually instead of importing, changed the codec and resolution. The clips play from the photo library, albeit without the display LUT, and not using a display LUT when recording doesn’t crash the app when those clips are opened in the Media page. Looks like it’s something in the loading of the display LUT for playback of clips recorded under it causing the crash. So technically, since it looks like the LUT isn’t being burned into the file anyway, I can still output clips recorded under a display LUT as normal and just remember to not touch the Media page and reapply the LUT in Resolve. Otherwise, the app is great and I’m excited to follow further development!
Ruins about 20% of clips. It doesn’t happen every time, but it happens too often for this app to be reliable. I open the app, everything seems normal, record as I would with perfect preview, then I slide the phone back in my pocket and don’t think of it again. Until I dump footage and find that at least 20% of my clips have nothing but audio and terrible blue static covering the entire screen. Some sort of glitchy kind of look. But anything that was actually being recorded is just GONE. Completely. Forever. Never going to get those moments back. I’m willing to give up a bit of picture quality, or sound quality for convenience. But a I want to do is capture the moment in front of me in the time that it happens, and this app has failed time and time again at being reliable enough to do that. I tried to update, tried it again and again, but it has lost so many precious moment to me that I have no choice but to no use it ever. And at this rate, I don’t know if I will ever be able to trust it again.
Perfect for iPhone 15 Pro. I attached an SD card reader, and one of my faster, SD cards to the phone and used this app to record 4k ProRes 422 with Apple log, and a display LUT I loaded in, without a single problem. It was glorious. The image is extremely good looking and on wide shots or ECU could easily cut in with cinema cameras. I’m blown away. While Apple does allow pro as recording in their native app, it is only progress 422HQ, which takes up tons of space. Blackmagic lets you set that lower to be more reasonable. You can even record 4k/60 ProRes 422 to an SD card. And the app is free. Wow.
This app is FANTASTIC!!!!. I own my own digital network, Black Star Network, and host my own show #RolandMartinUnfiltered. I own five C300s; two Canon XF-405s; three Canon XA-25s; a Canon XA-45; a Mark IV 5D; and a Canon C70. We do lots of high quality one-on-ones. But there are numerous times when I am solo and on the go. I’ve shot a lot of stuff with the native video on the iPhone 15 ProMax, but it does NOT compare to this app. What I am most impressed by is the natural colors. Too often with the iPhone, the algorithm changes the colors of what I’m shooting. I see this all the time with concerts. The color on the camera is totally different than what I’m seeing with my eyes. Yet with this app, I’m getting true colors. The video is vibrant, sharp and amazing. I was totally blown away the first time I used it and that has been the case ever since. This is truly an amazing app and I now shoot all of my video in it!
First version feels polished. For a first iteration of an app, this seems incredibly stable, robust with features, and easy to use. Having built in luts day one is awesome, so many exposure tools, great codec options, good color, and the list goes on. Amazing work Blackmagic team! I only have 4 criticisms (or more like recommendations). My first criticism is I wish there was a way to tap to focus without also turning on auto exposure. Its terrible when you have everything locked in, then you tap to focus and now your exposure is messed up. Second criticism is that it uses a histogram for exposure. I wish I could change that to a wave form. Wave form is more useful as a quick reference when exposing the whole frame and find myself relying less and less on histograms. My last request is I hope we get a 10bit log codec for older iPhones (the 14 can handle a 10bit log file proven by other apps). Would be nice to push the colors a bit more and see if we could squeeze a bit more dynamic range out of the iPhone sensor. Overall, amazing app so far and I’m excited to see updates pushed out in the future. I cannot imagine filmic pro being happy about this app not only being free, but being better in many ways. Considering the filmic app is a subscription (an expensive one at that), many users will be jumping to this immediately.
PRESETS!. I have only 2 problems. 1 big, 1 small. We have presets available which is supposed to make switching to different shooting modes a faster process. But with this app they have the presets buried in the settings which is basically pointless. The presets NEED to be accessible from the viewfinder screen where I can quick tap to change between them. Please make this change! It’s completely pointless to have to go into the settings. The other problem isn’t anything major but with dark mode icons on ios 18 this big, bright blue icon ruins the whole look of my Home Screen.
A fully featured cinema camera app.. This app will change your phone to a reliable cinema camera, except of sensor size. It will give you full control of shutter and iso. It also unlocks full codec & resolution & gamma & color space combination, gives you perfect recording spec suitable for your next project. And it supports 1.33 and 1.55x anamorphic desqueeze and also DOF adapter, which is critical for professionals. Also its internal and external monitoring capability is great. It supports 65 point 3d lut and also supports bake lut to video output, clean video signal output via usb-c so you can use any monitor to see apple log or hdr footage within rec709 profile. However, few features are missing. it does not support to display waveform and vectorscope. So you need to rely only on false color to check your exposure correctly.
Blackmagic continues to deliver. Blackmagic’s smart business practice to provide to all customers high level products without searching for opportunities to greedily rip you off is what has made me gravitate to this company and its products, recommending it left and right. This app is proof of that. It is professional and very well done, and provides all that is needed to grow professionally without the gotchas all other companies do, providing pieces and to grab you in a subscription or something, which at the end causes me to distrust them. This is why I use Davinci Resolve, their AV switchers and now looking to invest more. Blackmagic… Thank you!!
Wireless audio monitoring would be HUGE!. If there was a way to incorporate audio monitoring with wireless headphones vs only using them as a microphone. That would be a huge quality of life improvement. I am able to use wired headphones on my shotgun mic but when doing run and gun shooting they occasionally cause interference or I’m limited by the length of the cord. Having multiple ways to monitor audio would easily put this app in a league of its own. From a video recording perspective this app outdoes every other app I have used.
App is very unreliable unless watching the screen the entire time. I have used this app now for quite some time and there is one major flaw — it’s not reliable. There’s been numerous times where I believed I had started shooting a video to then later realize I didn’t capture anything. Either because I hadn’t clicked the volume button strong enough or because the settings Blackmagic Cloud button was accidentally pressured, it’s very annoying to see later on that it was all for naught. I use the iPhone 15 Pro’s Action Button to launch the application and then manually record with the volume buttons, but there’s absolutely no feed back to ensure anything has actually happened. If I want to be in the moment and not take my eyes off the scene while still shooting with the app, then that is near impossible to achieve. PLEASE add haptic feedback on start video and stop video. The app otherwise is amazing, but if I can’t be sure I’m actually filming then what’s the point? Even the built-in camera has haptic feedback
Watch out this is better than Filmic Pro. - The controls on filmic pro are tiny and annoying to adjust. This one does it correctly, it is easy to adjust settings. - It allows you to record to external media unlike filmic pro. And it allows this with any format not just ProRes like the default camera app. - It lets you record wide screen video without having to turn your phone sideways. - BTW they’ve unknowingly allowed you to record ProRes on iPad mini 6. You’re not supposed to be able to do this on non-pro models, Apple uses ProRes to segment their products but this app lets you do it anyways.
ProRes & control problems. On M1/M2 iPad Pro, should be able to capture ProRes to external TB4/USB4 NVMe storage with over 1GB/sec sustained write capacity, but that’s only stable for ProRes Proxy. Same storage used with Blackmagic Video Assistant for ProRes capture. The app needs better capture buffering. If recording to local NVMe storage is marginal, how can recording to cloud be stable? The frame drop alert is also obnoxious. It should be configurable. Consumer cameras deliver far better data rates to far inferior storage without dropping frames, and the storage I’m using has high sustained data rate capabilities when copying large ProRes video files averaging 400GB, so this app ought to be able to use those USB4/TB4 storage for ProRes capture. Remote camera control never worked on 4 different iPadPros and two iPhoneProMax phones all on the same dedicated WiFi or Ethernet network. No device ever discovered any other. Setup is too difficult because auto discovery should be as simple as finding printers or remote Macs. Other camera control apps are easier to use.
Promising!. Considering it’s a new app, I won’t hold it to the same standard as an aged application. This app definitely shows a lot of promise, hitting some of the features I have desired control over. I mostly wanted to throw in the features I would find valuable to add! Control over the camera light would be phenomenal. One of the big issues I encounter with Apple’s native camera app is the inability to take photos with the light on, I need to be able to see the object with the lighting before taking the photo. I take macro photography of bugs, so a sudden flash is much more likely to scare them off. My only option has been recording snippets to take photos, but I have to sacrifice a lot of quality. The light would be world changing! Would also like to access the alt macro camera (not the .5), that would be awesome.
Great App! Just Needs Apple Watch Remote App. Great iPhone app. Needs a dedicated apple watch camera remote app like the standard iPhone camera has so that you monitor and remotely stsrt/stop recording of the camera from an apple watch when your iphone is on a boom/jib arm or you are self recording. Currently I have to switch back to the default camera just to use apple watch as a camera remote. It's also cumbersome to turn on/off false color. Ideally you could select a preferred exposure tool and have it be one press to toggle it on/off. Right now it takes 3 taps to turn false color (for example on/off which is too slow for real world use. This last one is more of a wish list item but it would be great in settings to be able to set a base iso and then adjust exposure based on stops instead of micro adjustments of iso for a faster exposure setting workflow. I will adjust rating to 5 stars once there is a functional apple watch companion remote app and it's easier to turn false color on/off.
Great camera app - with one important omission. This is a fantastic (and free!) alternative to Filmic Pro after I could no longer justify using that app. It has basically all the same controls, in perhaps an even more intuitive interface. However, there is one important feature that Blackmagic is missing. The ability to control and monitor the camera from a separate iOS device like an iPad. This functionality is imperative when self-filming. There is also no support for the app available on the website. So the only way I can request this feature is here in a review. I hope Blackmagic is listening and implements this asap!
Catastrophic Audio Bug + Needs Volume Button Focus control. Generally like the app and has been useful for B-Roll / non-audio filming, but for whatever reason the default audio input selection is set to “None” and has reverted to “None” despite changing it to “iPhone Microphone” resulting in ruined and useless videos on multiple occasions. The default should be “iPhone Microphone” with the secondary option being to disable audio, which should also have to be confirmed via a pop up asking “Are you sure you want to disable audio?” Fix this audio issue and add the option to focus or zoom using the volume buttons and you have a near perfect app!
Good App But Needs work. This is a awesome and great camera app however there is a lot features that are missing from it 1. Torch light on camera for recording 2. Paused and Resume for easy editing 3. Anti shaking (to prevent shaking during the recording session 3. video stabilization. 4. extended cinematic. Mode 5. Saved each feature setting to prevent app from resetting them all. 6. macro mode. For video and photos 7. 4K pro res recording in 60 FPS and saved videos to iPhone photos library 512Gb/1Tb required only 8. Set recording duration for 1min 2 min 5 min 10 min , 1 hr 2hr 4hr 8 hr 10 hr and unlimited recording 9. Control audio gain adjustment for studio recording 10. Stop recording when battery indicator shows low battery at 5% battery life. 11. Surround sound recording 12. vocal sound effect. For recording Please consider adding all these features in the upcoming updates thanks 😊 waiting to hear back from you immediately
Love it!. So much better and more user-friendly than all the other iPhone apps I’ve tried. The one thing I would ask to add is a way to start and stop the camera remotely. I am shooting from my car today and would like to be able to start and stop either from my, Apple Watch or iPad. Right now I’m recording lots of extra footage so I don’t have to safely stop the car to start and stop the phone. I guess that’s pretty nitpicky. :-) This camera app is awesome.
There is a problem that has not been solved for a month.. When shooting in 4k with the stabilizer on, the image keeps “jumping” at random moments. It looks like the phone's camera is switching, but it's not. The image shifts sharply to the side and returns to its original position. It may not happen during recording, but it may happen every few seconds. And it cannot be fixed in post-production. I wrote to support about this problem a month ago. But there is still no update that solves this problem. Until now, the app is not usable because of this. I had the same problem with the DJI Mimo app. And the developers of this app have taken this serious problem quite seriously and have already released an update that solves it. Why can't you do the same? iPhone 16 pro, iOS 18.1
Almost perfect, full auto needs to be better. This app is so close to being perfect but for me I’d like a better auto mode as there are several issues with it currently. The shutter speed likes to stay around 1/30th in relatively dark environments, while the ISO moves around, when the shutter is close to 360 degrees there is a MASSIVE dynamic range hit, so forcing it to never go below a 180 degree equivalent would be perfect. In general I would love it if tap to focus/expose could be decoupled so it’s only tap to focus, I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve had my manual setting dialed in and accidentally tapped somewhere that’s not a control. There should be better built in LUT options, as the Apple 709 one is terrible. Though I have it set up with an Apple Log to HLG LUT that I made so I can actually monitor in HDR, which is essential for seeing what your doing outside, and crucial for me since I target an HDR delivery with these files, so what I see is what I get.
Bug in the Blackmagic app. Everything else works great.. I think the display LUTs that I have in the app are being misinterpreted by the app, and even though I go in LumaFusion and DaVinci Resolve to see the footage, it doesn’t look the same. Unless that is intentional which I believe is not. But everything else about this app has been great since the latest update! I would love to see this app win app of the year. Thank you Blackmagic for making this app really good.
New Favorite. For almost 2 years, a work colleague put me onto Filmic Pro and luma fusion. I enjoyed the combo with my former iPhone 13 Pro Max. Now that I have the 15 pro max, I was going to resubscribe to filmic but couldn’t justify the $40 annual subscription. I do use the Shiftcam system and figured would just use the native camera app until I saw black magic advertised on some tech channels. Especially since it’s free, how can you go wrong. You can’t!! Just started using it today and briefly played with some setting. CONS: I personally would like the option to only record to the the photos app not in files and and photos. Also, wish their was an option for Apple Watch to control and view video like the filmic pro app. But, it free, so can’t complain
Great App, but needs more framerate options. The app is great, and could easily become my go-to if they add the option to shoot at 240fps. I tend to do a lot of high speed recording, and limiting me to 60fps is a big bummer for me. I don’t have many other complaints. The app is great. Sadly, as long as this issue isn’t resolved (pun intended), I’ll have to keep Filmic Pro for my high speed recording. It’d be great to only have one camera app for all my work, but that’s not possible just yet. Here’s hoping that a future update can address this.
Great app, needs to improve autofocus. I am a great fan of Black Magic for giving us the DaVinci Resolve. Now giving us this free iPhone app which overtime will be on par with Filmic Pro and Cinema P3 pro camera. I downloaded and tested it. In addition to other suggestions in other reviews, I noticed that when I changed from 24 fps to 60 fps that there is a delay in autofocus while you move the camera around. Autofocus is not continuous. I’m sure that will change soon. Great app nevertheless. Update: kudos to Black Magic for continuous updates of this app. It is my go to app now and on par with their competition and exceeding. I like the Apple log profile for HEVC which saves storage and addition of Apple log to rec709 option. Keep the updates coming and you will be dominating iPhone video recording
One thing I’d add….REMOTE. The app is excellent. As an amateur there are some handy features I d love for one person operation; remote control via iPad/Apple Watch. The OEM camera, allows for switching cameras, zooming and choosing focus area. I’d just love Being able to monitor the phone from my iPad, control focus/zoom etc. from the watch, start/stop. Is choosing a lens possible? That one feature would blow filmic off my devices. Well, filmic does seem to offer a greater variety of resolutions….sometimes I like to video journal while using a minimum amount of storage. Thanks for the great app.
I love this app BUT. I really love this app and I love the direction blackmagic is going with it. But for my personal use, I really wish when you’re in the cloud dashboard and you delete media from the cloud, I wish you could choose where it deletes from. Right now it deletes on my computer and on the cloud, but not on the camera I recorded it from. I wish it was backwards where it deleted it from the camera, and the cloud kept it on the computer that I’m editing on, it’d be nice if you had the option to choose which locations media deleted from when you delete media. But other than that I’m really loving this app and I’m excited to see where it goes.
I love it. I absolutely love everything about the Blackmagic Camera App! I’ve even switched my Action button to launch this app—it’s now my go-to for every video shoot. One of my favorite features is the ability to shoot horizontal videos even while holding the camera vertically. Although it crops the image slightly, I still find it incredibly useful. One feature I would love to see added is the ability to create custom presets. I often find myself adjusting the exposure triangle settings in different environments, and having custom presets would save a lot of time. I really hope this feature is included in a future release!
Issues with H.265 files shot in Apple Log. Great app in general. Being able to shoot in Apple Log with smaller file sizes is great. The app is easy to use once you learn the layout. Only issue I’ve come across is shooting in 4k Apple Log H.265. The files aren’t recognized by my PC and resolve only sees it as an audio file. The proxy version in 1080p H.265 works fine. Just can’t open the 4k files. I’ve tried reinstalling my HEVC codecs to no avail. Other H.265 4k videos I’ve downloaded online work fine on my PC so I believe it has something to do with the videos coming out of the app. Hope it gets resolved soon.
Almost perfect. Everything else has been said already but there’s one single feature that could make this perfect and render filmic completely obsolete. That would be having the ability to film in one frame rate but have the file saved already re-timed/slo-mo’d - ie shoot a 2 second 60 fps clip, but the saved file is a 4 second 30 fps clip. Please add this feature!! I rely on this extensively for filming reels of home interiors for real estate. Right now Filmic is the only app that does this but this app is far superior- I’d really like to switch! Please add this!
Amazing they brought this to the iPhone and it’s free!. I’ve been a big fan of blackmagic for a while. I watched the announcement today and was blown away at this particular announcement. I’ve been wanting something new to recommend folks over Filmic pro since they changed to a subscription based service. The interface is way easier to navigate than any other app I’ve used and feels right at home as someone who uses a bmpcc4k daily. Few things I’d love to see come to this (though it’ll have some massive hurdles to jump) -log recording -record to blackmagic raw format -connection to atem product line for use of iPhones for live streaming Those are HUGE asks to a product that is already amazing. If y’all could add those features this would be not only one of the best apps for filming on iPhone, it would be one of the best tools for filmmaking.
A little weird for anamorphic desqueeze. First I’ll say that I love this app. It’s made shooting seriously on the iPhone possible. I shot a day trip in anamorphic yesterday and didn’t realize the desqueeze was getting baked into the file’s aspect ratio. I would much prefer to use all available resolution to capture the squeeze, then desqueeze in post. I’d like to see an option in the settings that lets you set burn-in yes/no. In fact I’d prefer that all options like LUTs and desqueeze be relegated to nondestructive monitoring. Or have it be optional whether they’re burned in. Luckily they already do this with the “record LUT to clip” toggle.
So far, OKAY…. I downloaded the app 4 days ago and it worked audio and visually at first, but after my third video, my audio just ceased. I create a profile with Black Magic Design, deleted the app and redownloaded it to “reactivate” the audio and I thought my previous videos would’ve been stored in the cloud, they were not! I am still learning the app, but that was annoying. Also, it has been said that it does not use your storage on your device, however… I don’t think that’s true. I’ll do an update when I get more acquainted with the app.
RIP Filmic. I never review apps, but what Blackmagic has done here is nothing short of breathtaking. All the features I loved in Filmic at an incredible price ($0), with far superior UI and way faster startup times. The market leader in iOS filmmaking camera apps, Filmic Pro, is a total gouge using a subscription monetization model with an old, janky UI and I will never be going back. The only thing I miss is the drag/lock UI for the focus and exposure which I found intuitive, but the traditional tap here works fine. I'm also a recent convert to Davinci Resolve and just love it. Thank you Blackmagic for everything you do! Love your products lots and they've enabled me to do so much.
Level indicator and Flashight. So far so good! Great features! I do have a few suggestions. I’d like to be able to have the horizon level indicator and the ability to turn on the flashlight at night like the native app. Also, some indicator that the Timelapse feature is on. I was surprised to see I had accidentally turned it on and lost a great deal of footage. Update: When can we get the flash light option? I could use that in low light like the native app!
Started great. Now it frustrates and disappoints. I’ve been using Blackmagic Camera for several months. It was good but understandably not as polished as FilmicPro. Lately though Blackmagic has been practicing black magic. The app is unreliable. I empty my phone and the app stops recording long before it did a few months ago, claiming to be out of storage space. The Camera Settings part of the app has some serious U/I issues (hello: same company as DaVinci Resolve which shares this tendency toward a messy U/I). Make a decision please and just have all of your settings work the same way or at least give a semblance of coherent order for the list of camera settings. For now I can’t use this app if it’s going to be unreliable. But I had to give up DaVinci Resolve too: after 5 years I just began to assume the learning curve was unconquerable and the company unaware of the thicket their U/I is. Back to Filmic Pro or even the constantly improving iPhone native camera app. Bye again Blackmagic.
Focus versus exposure. Very happy with all the features and support for iPhone 15 pro max except no easy and obvious ability to separate exposure from focus. Would really like separate ability to lock exposure and only use tap to focus. Also would like control over speed to focus to simulate rack focus. Huge bonus points to use lidar where focus can use AI to enhance with realism. Rating is 3.5 only because separating focus from exposure seems like should have happened in first major update but cannot complain getting so much for free - this is simple way to get attention of Blackmagic for feature request;-).
My new favorite camera app!. For years I used FiLMiC Pro because it got me much better results than the default camera app. These days the default camera app does a great job and so I couldn’t justify the annual sub for FiLMiC as I don’t really use the advanced features. Then a friend told me about this app. Being free, there's absolutely no reason not to use it. Advanced features if you want them and it just feels good. Pretty intuitive. So far there’s only 2 minor things I miss from FiLMiC, both from the Media page. The ability to hold down the “Select” button to quickly select all, and the horizontal list view that showed a thumbnail on the left and video info on the right, as opposed to the grid view of this app. I have already used DaVinci Resolve as my editor for years so no surprise that this is a great app. I also wish there a full manual somewhere but I haven’t found one.
A powerful videography app. The app is essentially a basic version of the software found on Black Magic cameras. It’s well integrated and works well with iPhone camera features, allowing you to have more control over normally restrictive camera features. It adds the ability to manually control focus, have different exposure viewing modes like zebra, and even import LUTs for basic color grading. A must have for anyone who wants to try out doing video on an iPhone.
Could be my go to app but….. Having invested in the majority of Moment’s M series lenses I decided to purchase their app and discovered they provide corrections for their various lenses. And now that I’m replacing my M series lenses with their new T series lenses which I’m hoping will show a marked improvement in IQ. The caveat I have and why I don’t give the Blackmagic camera app a 5 star rating is there is no way to utilize the Apple Watch to control shooting HQ rear facing lens vlogging content. It appears the now defunct Filmic Pro and native camera apps support this feature. A shame as the Blackmagic camera app has the potential to be a massive game changer for mobile content creators like myself when used in conjunction with add on lenses from Moment, Sandmarc, etc. If Filmic Pro could make this work, why hasn’t Blackmagic done the same thing?
So far so good. The ability to adjust ISO and white balance is what convinced me I needed to try this app. I make mostly small videos with me in the shot talking as well as do a video podcast with a few friends. My white balance would shift between warm and cool at times with the native iPhone app. In iOS 17 they now have the ability to lock white balance. But I was noticing the images were sometimes a little grainy when I would shoot in my “home studio”. The ISO was always too high trying to shoot the low light stuff. Between my background lights, key lights and full light the native iPhone camera wasn’t producing the best results. Now lowering ISO and adjusting my lighting afterwards made a huge improvement. The other thing that almost had me deleting this app was the audio seemed extremely low when I was using my USB microphone. I was turning up the gain on my microphone way higher than I had needed to do before. Just figured out tonight that if you tap on the audio meter, gain control pops up inside the app to make adjustments. It starts off at the lowest level and you can raise it from there. Pretty sure when using the native iPhone app it just comes through at full gain preset.
Get serious…. If your serious about video and TIRED of Adob charging month fees for very little or maintenance updates, welcome to BlackMagic! DaVinci is a serious contender for you to consider, along with FinalCut Pro! I have NOT fully used this app but have used DaVinci and even the free version can help you to get to pro level editing for free! The fact that this app is free, shows that BlackMagic is serious about you and your needs, as they want you to become a Pro and later, AFTER you making money to invest in their Pro level services/products! Give this camera app a try and see how amazing the folks at BlackMagic are!! Not a paid review but a FREE DiVinci user!!
Amazing Stand-alone App!. This app is incredible. The control it gives you completely transforms your iPhone camera into something usable for video. Would love to see two things come to this app. One- would love to be able to plug my iPhone into my blackmagic cinema camera via usb c and use this app to control and monitor my blackmagic camera. Two- would love be able to plug the focus demand into my iPhone and use that to manually control focus of my iPhone. Incredible app and can’t wait to see what they do with it.
Good but there is video loss. In many regards, this is an incredible app that blurs the line between an iPhone and professional camera for what is truly the first time. Other apps have tried. This one actually does it. However, I’ve had a problem using it on both an iPhone 14 Pro Max and an iPhone 15 Pro Max. From time to time, the video will be completely unusable — covered in blue pixelation. There is no rhyme or reason. When the video works, it’s amazing. But when it’s unusable, it’s unusable, which is very concerning for professional use. So far, no response from the tech team at Blackmagic Design.
Amazing app on 15 Pro!. Now that they fixed the HDMI issues relatively quickly and gave us fractional frame rates, I can actually use my iPhone 15 Pro as a camera I. professional workflows! The only thing I would really like to see at this point is a way to move ISO better. Right now the sliders are really hard to dial in exactly and often move when removing my finger from the screen. It would be nice to have them as stops that lock into place at like 100, 200, 400, etc.
Blackmagic is the GOAT. SO relieved I have a better camera app option outside of Filmic Pro, after they sold out and got turned into a soulless cash grab subscription service 🙃 Blackmagic is our savior! Not only much better.. but FREE?! Such a relief Blackmagic is a company that is making consumer-first decisions. DaVinci Resolve is not only an amazing piece of software, but it’s reasonably priced and not a subscription service! I’ll happily continue to throw money at them as long as they continue this trend. Thanks Blackmagic!
The perfect tool for any filmmaker. I love this app!!! Ever since I have started using the black magic video app on my iPhone, it has completely replaced the filmic Pro app I was using before. It has way more options that meet the needs of my projects. And as a photographer, I can really appreciate all of the manual controls that I’m able to use when I’m creating my videos. I would strongly suggest this app to anybody whether you are an amateur or a professional. It will definitely step up your game.
Excellent camera app; one more feature would make it perfect. Love love love this app, especially the nice integration with Blackmagic Cloud. The ONE feature it is missing is the ability to use a UVC camera connected to an iPad as the camera source (I know you can generate a UVC stream of the iPad’s own camera) because I like to use my iPad as a monitor/recording device for a camera I already have. If you added this one feature it would improve my workflow so so much!
Great app but…. Everything I’ve been looking for, however…be careful with the Timelapse recording setting. There is zero indication in the viewfinder when that setting has been toggled. Shot a Timelapse sequence and then an hour later shot some more clips in a location I can’t return to…and they were all in Timelapse mode, so useless. I love everything this app can do but not having an indication in the viewfinder when you are recording a Timelapse is a major overlook that I’m hoping will be a quick fix. How your listening Blackmagic and thanks for the effort on this app so far. (Also, every once in awhile the top menu seems to be unresponsive in the media tab.
Next Level. Here’s the deal. BMD for years has closed a gap any other company just wasn’t interested in closing. And it wasn’t a fluke. It’s been for a crazy long time. Continual support. Continual innovation. I run a 12 old switcher among 5 new ones I own. And the company that made that accessible for me to start, is offering a standout app…free. It looks awesome, it “feels” real. Like their cameras. Honestly, thanks guys. Thanks for pushing what can be. It’s honest, and it’s quality and there’s not a ton of that.

Nearly perfect. It works just like all blackmagic stuff. Easy to use yet complex enough to do professional work. Only thing missing is compatibility with DJI’s osmo gymbils Then amazing.
The Best Free app. Thank you very much Blackmagic. Grateful for your generous and awesome app.
Independent exposure and focus. An awesome app to harness the iPhone 15 capabilities. Some great additions around focus would be to separate the exposure and focus reticles, add focus racking and improve the manual on-screen focus UI.
Amazing. BlackMagic has smashed out the park with this app. Absolutely amazing feature for free. Say Goodbye to filmic pro and their stupid monthly fees. Don’t take my word for it. Try it for yourself
My two great loves. I graduated from the Australian Film Television and Radio School in 1992 but before anything just being around film cameras excited me because I could see reality with more story and texture. Tonight trying the black magic software seeing soft roll off on skin and having a real cinematic tool now reminds me why I started shooting pictures. I filmed photos of my wife on a tropical island before we were married . We were young. I was taking pictures with no training and still today those pictures capture my two great loves . Thank you Grant Petty and Company
Would love UVC integration. Such a great app for filming on an iPhone or iPad but would be great if we could connect either device as an external monitor and use all the features like LUTs and graphs.
Please add log profile. Please add LOG profile for iPhone 14pro
The best app for videography but. Probably the best app for videography. Evrythings perfect but i am having a issue of the microphone source. I dont know why i have to microphone source to iphone always. Otherwise it doesn’t record the sound. I hope the update solves it.
Great App that need auto iso selection that is not locked to shutter speed!. Great job Blackmagic! Apart from the list of features like log recording, and others would it be possible to have auto iso selection with a locked off shutter speed/angle? It is important to have the shutter speed locked but have Auto ISO for quick recordings?
Loving this app but one issue-. I love the quality of video this app helps create, thankyou!! Superb quality. One thing- The LUT drops off when I hit record with Cinematic or Extreme stabilisation which is a problem especially in bright sun. Any fix coming for this?
Love it.. Hey team, would love to see a stills mode too, and a way to keep the LED light on during shooting
Doesn’t work on iOS 17.1. Can’t make the app to work on my 13 PM running the latest iOS 17.1. Requires Microphone & Photo Library permission but can’t seem to find the option to enable/provide it. Please fix. Thank you
This sort of app doesn’t happen anymore... Thank you, Blackmagic. Gosh bless your audacious socks for making this app free. You’ve enabled a generation of content.
Flat profiles and bitrate selections are missing. Very promising app but unfortunately it does not have flat profiles and ability to select a bitrate. It is currently similar to the standard Camera app’s bitrate. Having shutter speed displayed in angles is great.
Not for left handers. From portrait rotate right and have volume buttons in on top. Everything is upside down. Just another camera app that hates left handers. If you need an accessible camera look elsewhere.
Where’s Flat or Log recording option?. I can’t select to record in either Flat or Log profile. Totally not ideal, especially when it’s a feature on most other camera apps. Have to pass on this app!
Best Video Making App so far, could be better. PLS give the option to make scrolling wheel position consistent with finger position!! Update 1.2 made fast and smoothly scrolling of any dial impossible, as anytime the speed of finger slowed to below a certain speed, it will enter a “precise mode” and barely move even if you swipe to the edge of the screen. The feel is very binary, and completely unintuitive. I would like to request that this feature to be optional or even reverted in the next update, as the previous version is already accurate enough even for a single stop adjustment. Also, there seems to be a bug when working with a Nucleus Nano, once in a while the image will zoom in to above 10x and stays there, or zoom in a little bit and out, which is quite weird. This problem persists from the last version, the probability of triggering dropped, but it still happens. BTW, big applause for the addition of false color while recording, save me the cost of an HDMI adaptor and an external monitor, and avoided a complex setup, thank you!
Feature suggestion. Hi feature suggestion - love the new Camera App for iOS would be great to see a 'rack focus' feature like in Filmic Pro (set start and end focal point then click to activate the pull focus).
Report a bug. Good app in general. One major bug i found is that when I try to open Blackmagic while my phone’s microphone is occupied by another app, the Blackmagic app will automatically select audio source to “none” and will not reset it back later on. A lot of video I recorded came out with no sound until i realised the sound bar is not moving later on. Hope u can add the function switch the mic back on, or to display some warning when there is no sound being recorded. Also sometimes, the lens switch bar disappears for no reason.
Epic features & easy to use. I’ve been using this app on my iPhone 15 pro with apple log, the app is super easy to use for a beginner and my footage is coming out great.
Please add option to take still photos as well!!. Hi there, Great app but please add support for taking still photos. I’d rate the app 5/5 if it had this feature. That would be amazing. Thanks.
Amazing app. Amazing interface and shooting options. Would even better if you could shoot in a log profile.
Crashing the app. It’s crashing and reloading the app when its open.
The Best Use of an IPhone 15. I bought the iPhone 15 Pro because of Apple LOG. Blackmagic cam allows me to film in 4K 50 LOG without having to shoot in the massive ProRes size. It’s an extremely intuitive app and I recommend it to any professional filmmaker wanting to get into shooting on iPhone. And it’s free!!
No watch preview. Great app, versatile and well laid out UI. However when using the back main lens on my iphone to record gimbal and vlog work I always line up the shot using the apple watch preview function in either the native camera app or Filmic pro legacy. If you had watch preview Id swap over in a heartbeat, but its incredibly useful to use the watch to line up shots when the screen is facing away from me.
Amazing! But I have a feature request. Amazing software. Thank you so much for making it available for nothing. But! I’d really love a feature to turn off creation of proxies on-device. I presume it’s contributing to my iPhone 12 mini’s overheating. I get ‘system pressure’ all the time and can only shoot for about 10 minutes until I literally have to put my phone in the freezer. I have a Mac mini under the desk running the proxy generator. I really don’t need my iPhone to do it! Update: feature implemented! 🙌🏼
Amazing app!. I do love the app and the constant updated that comes packed with added features! If I'd request a feature that would be: - is there any way to use the buttons on the phone as a custom buttons within the app? It would be nice to have LUTs preview on/off switch, changing focal length, codec selection etc.
Allow still image. Why can’t we take a still image with these settings u have available for video
So far good. can anyone tell me if its only video or if its camera too
Can it take photos? How?. It seems to be a good video recording app. But can it take picture? How? How to start it to take picture by default and use the Quick Button on iPhone 15 Pro?
Almost perfect. Stabilisation breaks the app when any lens other than wide is selected on 16 Pro. Not an issue in all video apps. Hoping a solution is found soon.
iPhone 16 pro video jittering issue. The video jitters on zoom lens when panning very disappointed. Please fix
Color space bug when codec set to h.265. When you set codec to h.265, record Apple log hdr and apply out to the clip, the color space is messed up, resulting in hyper saturated footage.
Bug with Tilta Nano on IPhone 14 ProMax. I manage to pair it with my Tilta Nano 1. However, when I pull focus it would often zoom all the way in. Happens almost every other time I pull focus. Appreciate if BMD could fix it.
This is the TOP mobile phone CINEMA CAMERA APP. This company is for the creatives by the creatives! Only have 2 words - no words! ❤️
Will be amazing with Log. Will this have a log recording color space option in the future? Don’t see it currently.

Incredible. I can’t believe this is free. It’s so good it has everything I need for essentially professional video recording on my phone. Please just don’t take this away from us. We need it.
Great new better and good bye filmic. Blackmagic Design has always come through with the greatest bang for buck compared to its counterparts, and the world of capitalism, they focus on quality and deliver to all their customers. A great product no matter what. Without going crazy with their price margins
cinema camera in my hands. everything about this app is great. Just requesting for a feature it is that i can control the camera settings from my iPad just like a bm camera
Amazing!. It’s only 1.0-1.1 but it’s already packed with great features. The app has its quirks but I’ve already worked around them. It’s a solid choice.
Best app for mobile filmmaking. Absolutely fantastic, Incredible functional and intuitive, this app turns your mobile device into a professional camera, a pleasure to work with.
Really great video app. The only flaw while using the DJI Mic Mini in Bluetooth mode, your audio output has to be same as audio input setting. Hence you can record with the Mini Mic but to listen to your playback on iPhone speaker is tricky. Not sure why it has to be the same. A work around is record with Mic Mini and for playback, take iPods out of case to listen to your playback. Store iPods back in case when you want to record again.
Excellent. Excellent app from an innovative company 👍
Storage access issue. I’ve got 65GB free storage free on my iPhone 13 Pro. Within the app it says that I only have 9GB free and will only let me record for 25 mins based off my record settings. Anyone else have this issue? Or is it just me? An update to address this would be swell Otherwise quite a good app. Locking buttons on the ISO and focus rack would be neat too. Maybe a little manual/glossary of the icons in the settings?? Is that asking too much from the best free video app ever?😅
Orientation of controls. I wish we can also get major control buttons oriented to the left as well for left handed users. I have a disability that severely limits the use of my right hand
Best Video App Ever!. Thank you so much for the app and making it free to use unlike the other apps. Skip the other apps, just use this one.
Crashes at 59min 29 seconds. I’ll record and it stops at this time frame and says “stop recording due to unknown error. iPhone 12 Pro
Dropped Frames Version 1.4. Don’t update! New version is not stable, a lot of frames are being dropped when recording 4K at 60 fps HDR.
Front cam lense. Is there front camera lense? If do, please let me know! 😊
Please add a “product mode” auto focus. For those of us who use this app to record product reviews having a “product mode” focus tracking option when the camera focuses on anything in the center of the frame would be amazing.
Locked SS, auto ISO?. Great app. I only miss the option to lock the shutter speed while keeping the ISO in auto. Right now, I can’t take handheld shots moving through spaces with very different lighting.
Lovely App. Thank you so much for Creating this amazing App. I Suggest to Everyone because working with Black magic camera is so easy and fast. Is not complicate app, saving time, friendly menu, and results are unbelievable professional.
10/10. Best camera tool on the App Store for sure
Best camera app ever. *chefs kiss* sometimes when I record at 29fps it has a strange strobing effect with the light but it’s not every time
Switching between front and back camera reverses image. Im on a iPhone 15 pro max When using the back camera then midway through I switch to the front camera, it seems fine while recording but once I check the footage the portion where I used the front camera is upside down. Same issue happens with the opposite, if I use my front camera first then switch to the back camera half way, the footage shows the back camera being upside down. This is a major drawback I have with this app at the moment as I want to be able to record both perspectives. I hope a fix is released soon.
Exactly what I was looking for. Have been looking for an app like this - with the exact level of detail and control over the cameras - for a while now. I can’t wait to start using it throughout my trips. That being said, one improvement I would suggest is fixing the orientation of the cameras when switching between the back and front cameras. This might be a very niche use case but, often when I’m trying to switch between the front and back sensors, one of the sensors will record upside down. Which can be annoying to fix in post. Other than that the app is looking great! Excited to see how this app evolves in the future.
LOST AUDIO MID SHOOT!. While filming, it’s stopped recording audio… UNBELIEVABLE! Client was not happy either …. FIX THIS Please
Awesome and Flawed. Just found out about this app and have been playing with it on an iPhone 12 Mini. I’m still figuring things out but one thing has me stumped. I can export video from the native camera app to an SD card with Apple’s lightning to “camera” adapter and I can record directly to an SD card with this app, which is AWESOME! But when I take my USB reader and plug it into my Sony XBR tv, the tv can only read the videos recorded by the iOS camera app but doesn’t see the HDR videos recorded from Blackmagic. What do I need to set in the app to exactly match the iPhone camera setting ? On my iPhone, the photos app plays back the blackmagic videos just fine; same with my older Macbook but my Dolby Vision capable tv does not.
Not good. Crashes on iPhone XS max after a few seconds of recording
Best app. 10/10
It’s great!. The only thing missing is an options for either apple-watch or iPad mirroring!
Powerful App for Video Content Creation. This is probably the most powerful and complete app for video creation that I have ever used/needed. It puts you in control of all aspects in the process. Focusing is crisp and sharp. You can manually dictate which lens to use. Although there are presets for WB, it allows you to fine tune it with a dial to match exactly what you see. The same precision goes for exposure as well. It is even compatible for use with Anamorphic lens. They really empower you with a lot of control to help you achieve your vision (those may seem rather basic features, but the app gives you a lot of freedom and they matter a lot in creating the right mood). I haven’t even touched on the many customization and options that are also available. All-in-all, it really helps with the workflow.
Nice cam. But has one annoying bug.. Great app but the fps always defaults back to 30fps when you close and open the app. Even just going back and forth to other apps. Would be nice to lock the fps to whatever you want. I didnt realize this and half my footage was 30fps and half were shot at 60, which is what I wanted. Also would love the option to save video only to the iPhone camera roll and not be forced to also save a copy inside the app. Otherwise nice options. I’m sure it will only get better.
Awesome app! Shutter angle > 360?. Awesome app! Would be even better if we could increase the shutter angle > 360 to have a slow shutter effect in camera!
Great app. Wonderful app and for making it free a pleasure. I see one or two issues: when you plug in external hd it would be nice if the app would recognize the next time the hd is plug in, also lock orientation seems not to remain lock on iPhone 15 pro max.
Brilliant work as always. This… THIS!!! Thank you Blackmagic!
Pro feel, pro results. This app has an incredible professional feel ergonomy. All the parameters are easy to access and the UI is intuitive and easy to use. Otherwise a big feature missing to me to take family/friends shots is the pause/resume record button.
No flash?. I wish they have a flash mode so I can use the light on my phone instead of my room and stand lights still good but hm
Focus peaking only when not recording. Would be great for focus peaking to function when you actually need it (for focus pulls during recording) - turns off the moment you start recording. Also need to be able to lock ISO, and be able to separate auto exposure from autofocus feature
Over exposed. The app over exposes unless you set the shutter speed to something in the 2000 range. What happened to the 180 degree rule.
OIS does not work at 5x Zoom. Using an iPhone 16 Pro. OIS does not work at 5x Zoom. Simply not reliable.
An amazing app thank you BlackMagic!. Even Apple used BlackMagic for their iPhone 15 Pro announcement and that’s validation enough for anyone that wants to try this amazing app out. HUGE PROPS FOR IT BEING FREE. 😊😊🙏📸🎥
Buggy and unusable. The first version was great. Now it just crashes all the time. It’ll randomly stop recording after a few seconds, and Bluetooth audio connection with DJI Mic 2 no longer works properly. Maybe calm down with the feature additions and smooth all this out?
Best of the best. This is the best camera app on the store. Its incredible that they made it free! BlackMagic truly does magic to their products. It would be so nice if they could add Log shooting profiles to the app. Thank you so much!!
Simply great!. Support for recording videos with LUT is a game changer. Nice addition! Great app!
Phenomenal camera app, just needs a LOG profile.. Is BMD Film gamma even possible on an iPhone?
Not right screen size for iPad.. Yes, it’s a great app, but I don’t understand why it only has an iPhone scaled sceen. IPads are not in the comprehensive compatibility list, so along with the screen size issue, why is it downloadable on an iPad. Seems a bit weird.
Lag !. Big problème of lagging …
Great but…. Everything is really great but I wish there were a few things: 1. BMD log for iPhones other than the 15 Pro 2. Different exposure metering options 3. Emphasizes frame borders when recording Huge fan of Blackmagic products though. Thanks for making something so great for the phone when no one asked
Blackmagic camera experience in your phone. Nothing easier and quicker as iPhone camera app for video recording. Blackmagic camera app is for film recording instead. It’ll open many options, having more camera control of your device. It will provide you the tools needed to capture proper cinematographic footage. Easy to run, and offering complex settings if needed. Total digital film camera experience.
Dropping frames. I’ve been using this app to film for months. Since version 1.4 was released, it dropped frames A LOT in all my recordings.
Much better, but still big bugs. This update has brought a lot of really great improvements and fixes, and it looks like this will be the best video recording app for iPhone, but only after some major and good handful of minor bugs are fixed. As of this update, the major bugs I found are that the app will not go back to auto exposure or auto focus. The app will indicate that it has been set back to auto, but it hasn’t. If you lock, and then unlock exposure and focus, or if you move the phone after temporary exposure and focus, or if you manually go through the settings and activate auto for both exposure and focus, it will indicate it is back in auto mode, yet it continues to stay in the last manual mode that was activated (even though it displays that it is in auto mode). The only way to get the app to actually have auto exposure and auto for focus work again, is to completely shut down the app from running in the background, nothing else will work, not even just exiting and reopening the app. Note that this has nothing to do with exposure compensation, this is a separate issue. A number of other minor bugs as well, mostly interface related, apparently broken after interface changes after initial release/design, which definitely need to be fixed because they cause a great deal of frustration and mistakes while shooting. Also, a wish list, things like a one touch way to reset everything back to auto, things like being being able to mark a begin and end point for zoom and focus, and be able to move from one to the other, either manually or automatically. But, big bugs and interface fixes first, before anything new ;)
Broken false color W/ Apple Log. Black magic needs to fix how false color reads while using Apple Log.
Free and works. It works I can do 4k 60fps hdr log video on iPhone and it looks good! Lets me set white balance, iso, shutter etc.
Stabilization no longer works. When you’re filming in LOG h.265 stabilization seems to stop working. Tried reinstalling. This was honestly the PERFECT app. But without stabilization I’m finding it not usable for productions.
v1.3 breaks handheld shooting!. I woke up this morning and the app was auto-updated, breaking capture preview on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. This makes my professional video rig useless for handheld shooting. (Zoom F3 recorder, manual exposure, wb, glass filters, etc.) My 14 Pro which was not updated to v1.3 still works perfectly. I had to cancel todays shoot as the camera was not usable. I sent a video example to their Twitter account but no response. Called their phone support from Canada for the urgent issue and they said I should post on the forums. I could not find a section about the app there.

I do hope this is the top review. This app is perfect, in every way. I have read reviews that are talking about pixelation and noise problems, and because of this, it really shows how much freedom you have! You can make it look absolutely awful, or unbelievably amazing! The fact you get this in a free app is just BRILLIANT! Thank you for existing black magic! At some point, I would love to see this work as a webcam aswell using usb, the creative freedom is just amazing, and file transfer could never be better!
Great! But why can’t we Burn In LUT’s?. Love this app. Has made filmmaking so much fun and a bigger part of my life. People always ask me what app I’m using because they don’t realize the power of recording in LOG! My question is why can’t we get the LUT’s burned in? I’m resorting to using Blackmagic for recording and Kino for exporting to get the footage to be burned in. If it’s not burned in, others won’t see the same image color/quality that I see on my device. It’s such a simple but important addition that should’ve been part of the app in the first place. :)
Best video app ever!. By far this is the best video app for serious cinematographers AND it’s FREE! It is one of the best free apps overall and I can’t recommend it enough. The level of image control it offers allows you to capture video at a quality that beats other options, including the not free Filmic Pro. And the interface and UX design is incredible. Stop reading this and download the app and get started filming your next project! (PS this is the first and possibly last review I’ve ever written.)
Feature Request - Zoom Continuous. Continuous Zooming (Similar to what the native Apple camera currently allows) from the ultra wide lens to the largest zoom lens…. especially with the new accessory Lens control Tilta Nucleus nano. I understand there is a flicker when the lenses transition…. but for doing sports it’s not a big deal. …Thanks for adding the zoom presets. Now it would be nice if it can transition to the different lenses and not stuck on the selected lens only.
Suggestion. Overall, everything is great. However, I would like to see a feature for wireless image streaming and remote control from a PC. It would be excellent to be able to use a smartphone as a webcam while applying Apple Log and LUTs directly in the PC software. In other words, I am looking forward to a desktop version of the Blackmagic Camera Controller.
Great app, just wish there were better camera control settings. I love all the manual controls that we get in the app, I just wish that all the manual controls that were provided were also available to adjust with the camera control. So far we have ISO, so it feels like it should also include the shutter speed, white balance, fps, and lens selection. I would love to be able to control all these parameters just from the camera control.
Serious problem in 4k 100fps. I’ve been using the Blackmagic Camera app and overall it’s a great tool, but I’ve run into a serious issue on the latest iOS version. When I record in 4K at 100fps, after just a few minutes the app shows a warning (!) symbol and the recording suddenly stops. This makes it unreliable for high-frame-rate shooting. I really hope this problem can be fixed in the next update, because otherwise the app has great potential.
Version 2.3.1 display luts not working properly. I’m not sure what happened but when the app auto updated none of my display luts seem to display properly. On playback they display properly, but on the actual recording screen they appear to be showing at like 50% or something, as it still appears very flat and log like. Turning off display luts definitely shows that SOMETHING is happening, but not enough. When I screenshot the screen it screenshots with the full display lut, and not how I’m physically seeing it.
Extremely buggy on 17 pro max. Just updated but issues still were not addressed. Failed me today during shoot and in front of my clients. Constantly gives error “stopped recording due too large amount of frames dropped. Phone needs to cool down “. Phone is freezing cold and still generates errors especially when shooting in 120fps. It does it in all frame rates. Tou have to press record 10 times to male it work. Killing app sometimes helps. Issue happens while using internal and external storage. Very unreliable. Hopefully fixes soon and I will update my review
Recorded hours of video in slow motion (without me inputting for it). I had put a normal video with 30 frames per second, with my multi cam setup with 3 iPhones and this specific iPhone recording 2 hours and 7 minutes while the other one’s recorded 1 hour and 56 seconds they start and end at the same time, but this one slowed down the whole video (they all have the exact same settings) the only difference is that this was had a usb mic plugged in, and if you play the footage it’s actually a lot slower, it’s a cool app but I can see that it’s no longer professionally reliable
Would be perfect if there was Timecode. I shoot a multi-cam setup using Atmos UltraSync BLUE timecode over bluetooth and 4 iPhones. This all would be perfect for my setup if it had timecode. I hope the devs can figure out how to do timecode without the need of specialized hardware, mobile devices are powerful and I'm shocked not many have figured out how to sync recording wirelessly. Love that the app has an option to record 4 channels at the same time. I was actually in the process of looking for a new audio config for my iPhone and thats how I came across learning about the Blackmagic iOS camera app. Im a DaVinci Resolve user so I'm looking forward to adding this app to my production work flow. Devs, please add timecode capability.
No excuses !. No excuses now you have the power of Black Magic in your hands. Now you can make your movies wherever you go. With a few refinements you’ll be able to draw on those stories you’ve been waiting to make. This is the best film cam app. And this is coming from a pro cinematographer who’s worked on various hit shows !
The Go-To. As a professional wedding videographer, I can honestly say that this app is awesome. I do have a few feature requests, although few: SPATIAL VIDEO - we’re all curious about the Vision Pro video capabilities, and the iPhone 15 Pro. If we could have control over frame rate (24 or 60fps) that’d be awesome! Is it possible to combine that with LOG? BITRATE - if we could have more compression options, that’d be great. This would be ideal for long backup recordings (ie ceremonies and receptions for my work). AUDIO SOURCE - Maybe the option for Bluetooth audio like AirPods as well would be great. That’s all I have. This is solid, it’s free, and honestly offers more in a professional sense (for less) than the likes of Filmic Pro. BMD has taken the crown!
Great for Starters. I wanted it but an expensive camera impulsively to start getting into video photography— Glad I didnt! While having a $3,000 camera is so nice, carrying my phone is even easier and the shots come out great; they don’t look like iphone videos at all. In the future, i’ll buy the grandiose sony setup, but for now this teaches me a ton and saved me money
Simple to use but appears to be missing audio monitor capabilities.. I’ve tried some of the other professional camera apps. This was easy to use without having to look up operations in a manual permit. Unfortunately, there is no manual at all for this camera. I can’t figure out how to listen to the audio during recording. Playback is fine. Audio monitoring abilities are essential, I don’t understand why it isn’t automatic. Five stars after I figure that out.
Best camera app. Look, it’s free, it’s better than the regular camera app, and it’s better than other camera app alternatives. Though, one complaint that I saw other people talking about is that when you are using and lut it will display that you are using it but when you press record it like goes away. I mean it’s not the end of the world since you can download luts and put them in later in editing. But still it would be better if this was fixed
What tool!. The software really takes shooting with the iPhone to a whole other level. With all the different options and control easily accessible turn your iPhone into a valuable professional option We have been recently shooting all of our tabletop gaming, terrain videos on the iPhone, using the blackmagic camera software.
Blackmagic reset my settings randomly. I usually film in apple log and add personal luts as the ones in the app aren’t the best. I enabled save luts to video after i downloaded the app. Then the next day, Took a couple videos and it showed my custom lut in the playback media but when exported removed my lut from the video. When i went to the settings, all my settings were changed to default and luts are not saved to the video automatically. So now I have to manually add the lut back in with a video editor. Why would entering and exiting the app automatically reset all my settings? Why do I now have to set my settings before every video shoot, it wont save anything.
Best camera app for video. The only thing that’s missing is an Apple Watch companion app for remote control and framing, (like the native Apple camera control on the watch). I film myself a lot and it would be great if I could see my framing and start/stop the record without having to run back and forth. But the app itself is fantastic, gives full control, and unlocks full access to Apple LOG for all codecs and qualities.
Amazing!. Please add open gate, please!!!!! also, sometimes when you open the app with the new camera button in the iphone 16 pro the screen looks black, but, i you press the button to record it starts recording, i think it’s something related to the camera open in the background. and also, sometimes i open the app and i doesn’t charge fully, the luts or the guide lines, i have to open and close the setting to fix it.
Predatory access to photos. Will not function without full access to photos. That means it can scrape every single place that you’ve ever been that you’ve taken a photo and sell that to advertisers. It can also aggregate data across all the photos that you’ve ever taken, and run them through its own AI processing. No idea if it does that now… But with full access required, there’s nothing to prevent it from doing that with a single automatic update. There is absolutely no reason a camera needs full access. Other apps work just fine with the ability to save only.
Great alternative to stock camera. I started using this camera because it gives me more options than my stock iPhone, and it allows me to switch between front facing and rear facing cameras. It also stores the videos on its app and then you can download them to your photos or videos or whatever. Which helps save some space sometimes. I definitely enjoy using this camera.
BM can you explain. When outside is bright light , user opens the BMC and screen shows total white. Then it goes back to normal showing what’s in front of the camera. However then when hit record button the camera goes right back to total white screen mode until the user taps the screen. Then it goes back to normal recording mode. The user has to then trim off the recorded few seconds of totally white screen video. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong ?
Amazing app. I have no idea why this app is free when it offers so much value. I assume that the main purpose is to draw people into the Blackmagic ecosystem - and they fully deserve that attention in the marketplace. If you have a halfway recent phone or iPad with good camera, this app will help you get everything out of it, in fact more than you thought was possible.
Greatly improves your iPhone video quality. After repeated use and quality comparisons — I have made this my default video app!!! This app is such a quality-build that it would be difficult to cover all the great things about it. MY HIGHLIGHTS: every setting is easy to access and control, while the stabilizing feature and low-light quality is second to none! FYI: excellent video capture, but doesn’t do photo stills. That said, each video frame can ‘almost’ stand alone as a still shot. I can’t believe an app of this quality is free (even if it wasn’t I would definitely pay for it). Just try it and see for yourself.
Storage cannot be emptied . Impossible to use for the long term. For a number of months I have been happy using the app on my iPhone. Way more sophisticated that the natural iPhone. However, I noticed recently that my storage was filling up- flashing film button. When I tried to empty my storage it made no impact. I checked on the Blackmagic forum and it seems that this is a real issue that people are trying to sort out. I reached directly to Black Magic Design (BMD) and was told refer to a forum post. Post : Unfortunately this is an iOS issue. The free space is not available to any apps. I don’t understand and not it seems do BMD!
Great start. This app is a great start and definitely heading in the right direction. The scopes and exposure tools need a lot of work yet however. Apple log appears to be very bright and currently both the false color and zebras in the app which only go down to 75% don’t really work for working with the new Apple log video. Shooting log video on the new iPhones is pretty much an auto take what you get sort of thing right now. The app needs better scopes, zebras that can be used down to 50% at least and adjustable false color values. I would also like to see a way to force a certain shutter speed but allow auto adjusting of the ISO. For those moments we want to lock in the look of a certain shutter speed. For now I use my light meter to help dial in a manual exposure but we really need better tools to manually expose Apple log right in the app.
Makes my iPhone a Genuine Camera. Digital Photography is amazing if you know what you're doing. This app provides features I miss using on my digital camera. But playing around isn't an issue either. I can shoot with my shutter rate well above what apple allows & capture lights flickering faster than my eyes can perceive. If you're new to photography & unsure what all these controls are LEARN; it's worth it.
PLEASE ADD SLIDER TO ZOOM!. I don’t know why we use scroll to zoom instead of slide to zoom. The worst type of control ever. I really want to use the app but sliding to zoom is need for broadcasting. Scroll to zoom is clunky and is not smooth at all, creates issues. Slide to zoom is a industry standard when it comes to camcorders and such, so why again are we using scroll. Give us options and please put a slide. I hate using filmic pro, but it has me until this is implemented.
Cannot contact anyone. I cannot find any way to contact the devs to make a feature request. I don't own any physical blackmagic products so I can't use their support page on the website, but there's nothing in app that suggests any other way to get in touch with anyone. My feature request is to please add an option to disable the frequency filter on the built in iPhone microphone so that I can record low frequencies. Right now the recording acts like the low frequencies aren't even there, while other phones can record them just fine
We need the lower ISOs back. When I used this app last week it was mostly perfect outside at ISO 55 and my variable ND set to maximum (shooting 4K 24p with 180 shutter angle). Now on the main camera it only allows you to go down to ISO 64, meaning that even with the ND filter at max, you get overexposure in the highlights. You can cheat this by going to one of the other cameras that inexplicably allow for lower ISOs, turning it down to the lowest setting, and then going back to the main camera, which defaults it back to ISO 55. Please fix.
The best camera app. It actually allows you to enable dual mono audio input so if you’re using the most frustrating audio interface like focusrite 2i2 4th gen which makes input1 go in the left speaker and input2 in the right when recording, this camera app actually makes it so both inputs are combined as they freakin should be and your video is playing stereo both your voice and/or instruments at the same time instead of one side only
Blackmagic is the GOAT.
