Sad to say that the average rating of 1.5 stars (after 84 reviews) is probably too generous. Is “getting a reliable app” too much to ask for, especially because it’s not cheap!
Please, Mr. Henry, just give up and buy rights to use the WaPo or NYT app. They're very different from each other, but both are perfectly acceptable. By contrast, this app is crap. I don't mind most of the things that seem to bother other reviewers, but the number of times it freezes, or won't download the newest edition, or doesn't respond to attempts to proceed to the next page and then decides to respond to all of the attempts at once by skipping ahead many pages, or responds to an attempt to enlarge the current page by sort of going back a page and then returning to the current page, or..., is infuriating. The features are acceptable but the bugs are intolerable.
I recommend calling the Globe customer service department to subscribe over the phone for the online edition. I know it’s old fashioned, but the service is way better. I subscribed through iTunes the first time. It’s not Apple’s fault as it’s a third party app, but the app was useless. No login access to the paper nor to my account. The app developer could not help me. Apple promptly volunteered to credit me so I could make arrangements directly with the Boston Globe. Now it’s all good.
What's the point of downloading issues if you can't view offline? Seems like big miss for app functionality to me. I want to be able to read downloaded issues when I do not have wifi, seems pretty basic.
It's great when it works, but constant struggles with the store and now it simply crashes repeatedly....latest update is suddenly very unstable as of May 27, 2014. Not happy as I am a paid subscriber to the globe. Not acceptable. As of iOS 11this app is junk. Basically needs to be deleted and reinstalled daily. How is the globe not getting it? Dump your app developer. How hard can this be?
The app barely functions. I have had it for years and sadly dealt with its issues. It freezes, crashes, glitches, and rarely functions properly. I don't know why I even have a subscription to the paper ($30 a month!) when they neglect the very platform used to read the paper.
Up at five no e-paper yet again. Writing this at 6:15 still no e-paper. Did the usual delete and reinstall of app - still no luck. Yesterday app crashed froze my iPad and caused me to do yet another delete and re-install to get paper. Oh, if only I could get the hours of my life back that I've spent messing with the worst app I have ever used. Please Mr. Henry, think about your customers and their experience!
Words can't describe just how bad this app is. Downloads get hung up so that one can be waiting days for issues that never show up. The Globe should be embarrassed that it's name is associated with this piece of junk. Don't buy it.
No quality assurance at all. Sunday paper is usually missing a section. Don't they use the app? I read the Globe despite the app. Mr. Henry deserves deserves better. After 3 major updates, still a pain to read an article in page mode without links. Scrolling while zoomed behaves idiotically- like no other app - you have to zoom out then scroll! If they listen to users as they say, why aren't there links in page view? Please put back the article continuation links so one can read a news story without bumbling and fumbling around. There is a tiny regional newspaper app with a much better interface than this (Recorder from Greenfield MA), so get with it Globe.
When people complain it takes a minute or two to download and the New York Times takes seconds, they don't understand I guess that the entire Globe newspaper downloads and every story it then instantly available. With the a Times, each time you click on a story, that story then has to download. I've been reading the e-Globe since it first became available. I lived in Maine now in the White Mountains and I download the entire Globe on my iPad before 5:00 am everyday, it's a great service. I can't believe anyone could honestly criticize the Globe or the app.

Boston Globe today, p. A4! Thanks to the Globe GRANT program for helping us get the word out about this...
Hangs. Does not download the content. The Globe and the individual responsible there should be ashamed of himself.
Is there anyone there who has a clue? Now I'm getting programmer messages about view editors being available. I can't get it to open no matter how many times I close it and reopen it. The maneuverability is even worse than before. After a page is zoomed, even slightly, you can't move around the page without "unzooming". It always takes several efforts to get it to download but today I can't get it to work at all. Please, please, hire one competent person. This is truly the worst app ever.
This is a lame app. 1) If you buy it on iTunes, you don't get access online. 2) The interface is clunky, clunky, clunky like back in 1998 when businesses thought that a web site was a scan of your brochure. 3) Globe online chat support is useless. I'm willing to give you my money guys but you've got to step up to the plate here.
Terrible app. Says it needs internet connection when one is available. Will not work.
Many issues with this app. For instance, Bostonglobe.com takes passwords that have special characters. If you try to login with a password that has a special character you will get an invalid password error.
The only solution is to use a password with only letters and numbers.
I love doing the crossword , but more than half the time, when I go to print it out, nothing shows on the print preview page or will print. this app is not great, but is still my preferred way of reading the globe, barring the expensive paper delivery option. please put more effort into it! Update 2017: nothing has been fixed. Also noticed that a large number of articles dont load when you tap on them. Extremely annoying.
Starting this week, the app throws a message on loading stating the app needs a network connection (which it has) and then crashes on pressing ok.
3-4-17 Months later....What's wrong with these people. Their app still stinks. Numerous bugs and crashes. They should take some notes from the WSJ on how to create a functioning app. Even apple says this app doesn't clear its data hogging space with no way to clear effectively. Then it refuses to close and reopen to show new editions, at times won't load, at times tells me it needs an internet connection- haha-I have a good one posting this low rated review. Hello hello Boston globe?? They probably paid app developers some good money to grind a pretty good app to a nub of functionality. I have a subscription and I'm logged in but it still only gives me the option of buying today's issue. Other navigation issues, archiving everything instead of removing x number of past issues make this app a clunker. Globe executives. I hope you read this and realize you messed up.
I tried to cancel The Boston Globe and they said only Apple could do it. Apple won't let me either. Be ready to spend 14.95 forever.
Switched from home delivery because it was always late, after 8 AM. same problem here . it also downloads automatically when I choose to only read it to save the space.
