The applications The Boston Globe ePaper was published
in the category News on 2012-03-20 and
was developed by Globe Newspaper Company, Inc..
The file size is 13.38 MB.
The current version is 5.3.14 and works well on
8.0 and high ios versions.
This build includes crash fixes and new functionality for hiding/showing the menu.
I don't know why everyone's complaining about this app, it works great on my iPhone 6S running IOS 10.3.2. Performance is excellent, zooming functions work well, can't ask for much more.
downloading the paper takes a lot of space. When I go to delete an issue the app never lets me delete anything. I have to delete the app and re install it. Frustrating.
I won't repeat all the problems others have noted, but this app is so bad I'm writing my first app review ever. For the love of God Globe mgt, please just look at the Washington Post app and JUST DO THAT. It's so bad, I rarely read the Globe anymore. So much for the techy John Henry who was going to fix this crap.
Recently subscribed to the digital edition of the Globe and use an iPad or iPhone as primary interface. The App is poor, unbefitting of an otherwise great newspaper. Downloading requires hitting "download" several times; and after you get through that, it takes a couple of minutes to download, even with a strong internet connection (NY Times, in contrast, takes a few seconds). After downloading, one sees a miniature version of the print edition and has to click on tiny articles to expand/read them. This interface is archaic, and in stark contrast to the way almost all other news apps present information (again, the NY Times makes it easy to navigate and read articles). Even when I bite the bullet and swipe through articles (vs. pages of the paper), the same article frequently appears several times (must be a glitch in a buggy App). I've complained about all this several times to the Globe, but there didn't appear to be much concern. The low user ratings here however should be sending a clear message they can't (or shouldn't) ignore. Apr 2017: Cancelled subscription and re-subscribed after 9 months after the subscription department told me their iPhone app had been updated. I took that to mean overhauled and fixed, which it decidedly is not. Jun 2017: They claim to have upgraded the app ... but that's not apparent to me. I'm cancelling my subscription again until they have a complete reconstruction of the app.
After terrible performance under IOS 10, the app has been upgraded to work much better than ever. Now if you enlarge a page to read, you can go to the next page directly - no need to pinch back! (Never an issue in hard copy, of course.) Won't download, or allow offline reading of previous issues!
The app consistent fails to deliver...the paper is often late...stories are often missed by the touchscreen...the tech support is woeful...I've had to erase/download the app twice in the past 7 days because it is unresponsive. This is the sum and substance of tech support...reboot the app. They never just fix it.
When it works properly I am happy with it but way too often it doesn't work right. This morning it failed in an all too familiar way. I touched an article to read but EVERY article I touched opened some article about a cat. The only way I could read the paper is to use my fingers to expand the facsimile paper so I could read it that way. Surely the developers can do better!! Waited a year but it is still terrible. Some days are fine and other days like 6/5/17 I can't read any article
John Henry's incompetence knows no bounds! Hard to believe any app could be worse than the last one, but the Globe outdid itself. This one won't even load! Just copy the New York Times app already.
The newspaper itself is great. However, the app frequently crashes. Other times you tap on an article to load it and it won't load or the wrong article will load. The Globe needs to switch vendors. The Washington Post app is the gold standard but I want a local news fix which is why I subscribe to the Globe. Getting tired of this though.
This version is better than the previous one on the iPad but its inevitable crashing (happens almost every day) forces me to use the online version.
The Globe did not downloaded more quickly today. If you made a change , it is not for the better yet! So frustrating Very frustating app! It takes for ever to download and has frequent error messages and it crashes when there are certain photos. I don't want to give it up but I think I will have to.
This last version has really given me problems on my iPad Mini with iOS 10.1.1. When I turn the iPad to the 2-page landscape view, the app crashes. ALL THE TIME. MULTIPLE TIMES.
Works great on my iPhone, now that they have fixed many of the minor issues with the app. No complaints.
The app works, but it loads really really slowly. And I can't say I like the representation of it. You can't possibly present the whole newspaper to readers on a phone or even a tablet. I read New York Times on my phone everyday, and it works great. Every medium has its idiosyncrasy. Globe shouldn't just dump the print paper on the phone and expect it to works. It reminds me of New Yorker (that uses the same approach) and I hate it. I don't think I'll ever read the Globe in app and just go back to browser on PC whenever I'm working. It's really a pity.
I move around a lot, so it would be too difficult to get the actual paper. I've always loved the Boston Globe and downloaded the app, and it's just so bad. It looks sloppy, it has a lot of glitches, and overall just seems like the Globe doesn't care about it. Whether they like it or not, more and more are relaying on digital news, and if they can't at least put some effort into making their app usable then the Globe is eventually going to go out of business.
This app on Ipad is not reliable. Frequently, after having downloaded the day’s paper while connected to WiFi, I experience the app either crashing, articles not maximizing to full screen, or articles simply not loading and I am left with a blank white screen. I experience these problems after downloading the paper and then disconnecting from WiFi. I love the Globe but hate this app, it needs serious work done to it.
Thank you for fixing the article view glitch! It's working much better!
I am so frustrated with this app. It will be ok for a few days and then I won't be able to download the paper at all or it will require several attempts. Right now, I can't access it at all. I want to support the Globe, but I would like to actually have access to the paper!
Upgraded to an app that doesn't work. Time to cancel - since I'm getting literally nothing for my subscription fee. Very frustrated.
