Used to be great, but.... I love the chive, have lots of apparel, mugs, cups, you name it. I understand the need to make money to fund not only the business but the excellent charity work they do, which is why I was willing to pay $40 for a t-shirt. With that being said, I understand there is a need for ad revenue. However, the latest update has made the app unusable. I can’t stop the App Store from constantly opening on my phone. I can’t even scroll the galleries before a new ad pops up. Even when this ‘glitch’ does not occur, the app is constantly crashing. Definitely not the best app in the world. I understand you can pay for an ad free experience, but this app has never worked correctly. I am not going to pay for an app to constantly freeze. It is very frustrating because I love what the Chive has done with charities. However, it seems in the past year their focus has switched to money money money. They blame Facebook policies for their shift, but there has to be a better way than this ad filled, pop up only garbage. It is going to narrow down their user base to a select few over time.

A Regretful Goodbye. Dear Chive (Mac especially... You are the bomb), I honestly feel a bit self compromised writing a review/post on something. People that have the time to do that seem a bit lifeless and lacking in better things to do am I right? Well, I guess you guys can take it as a compliment that you are the only organization that I would stoop so low for. I first downloaded your app some 7 years ago as a freshman in high school and have been in love ever since. Until recently your app was worth the ads that had to be put up with in order to enjoy the free content. I get it, you guys have to make money that is the nature of the beast. The Chive app was always the first one I downloaded when I got a new phone, but sadly it will not be next time (which is soon, my phone is garbage due to the continued droppings). The ads are TOO MUCH, so much to the point that the free content that made you all famous is now inaccessible due to the frustration that comes with having to swipe down on a Windstar Cruises ad every 4 seconds. I’m deleting the app as of posting this which breaks just a little bit of my heart because I feel that with it a piece of my adolescence will go with it, but please for the sake of another freshman younger version of myself make the app as enjoyable as it once was for me by removing some of the ads. Make having a “keep calm chive on” or “Lejund” Chris Farley shirt from The Chive as cool as it was for that current freshman now. Regretfully, Francis

What happened?. I still love the full site on the computer, but the app has seemingly only gotten progressively worse, with updates actually making it slower and more frustrating to use. I used to love the app, but now it’s like the app is only there because companies are ‘supposed to have a mobile app’. It’s not even the ads that bother me, but the fact that I can’t scroll through a single thread without it either freezing or crashing, makes the app just about useless. If this is a result of the increased ads then it’s a blatantly poor marketing decision. Nobody will see the ads that this company has forced in if they can’t even use the app, or if they delete it out of frustration. I don’t care if my favorite apps become billboards, as long as I can still actually use them. Go ahead and monetize, but please maintain a functional app. (Also this app still has a five star rating which I’m sure is from the last five years of reviews, because almost every rating within this year has been negative). Sell out if you want, but at least still maintain some semblance of a website. Peace.

Probably the worst app in the world. They literally punish you with the whole “Probably the best app in the world” tag line on the screen every time you go back to the old well and try to enjoy ya some Chive. Nobody will argue that the content and the people are anything but awesome. But the complete failure to even muster a half hearted effort at providing an app that even works at a mediocre level is astonishing. You can google it yourself and see nothing but an avalanche of complaints and comments from almost every person on the planet who has used the app and it’s an utter dumpster fire. It never works. Can’t open images or gifs. Crashes almost every time. It literally is almost self-defeating to even try to open it. You just want some DAR or memes or some crap and somehow you find yourself angry, disappointed, and borderline enraged by the time you’ve reloaded the app 4 times to try to see the freakin pics on a juicy thread or post. Save yourself the agony and just bookmark the Safari link to the Chive online. Trust me you’ll be thankful. Or if you are the kind of person that loves standing in line to find out they sold the last item to the person in front of you, or arriving at your favorite restaurant to find out they are closed that day, or opening up your one present on Christmas morning to find it is an empty box and a cruel joke.....well, then download the app and you’ll be repeatedly abused.

You have failed us.... John...Mac...and the rest of the guys and ladies that power the Chive machine, you have failed us. I personally chose the Chive back in 2013 so that I could have a positive perspective on the goings on around the world. I was turned on to you guys by a fellow medic and it was an immediate love. I have seen your move to Austin and was filled with the warm feels when I see what is being done for my fellow vets and also those who are in need. But you have FAILED US. You stood tall when there needed to be a voice for net neutrality as well as the blue grinch known as Facebook...BUT YOU HAVE FAILED US. We, the Chive Nation, use your app as a get away or as a substitute for social media, we come to you to get away from the constant bombardment from ads and the mainstream chase of the almighty dollar. With the app in its current iteration, I can’t even sit for longer than two minutes without have to cut off intrusive ads. There has to be a better way. PLEEEEASE for the love of all that is holy...cut it out. Get back to what made you the Chris Farley’s of this world, and quit using us, the Chivers and Chivettes as your ad guinea pigs.

Too Many Ads!. Edit September 2017: Absolutely none of the issues so many of the users have tendered have been addressed. Video ads on every single one, constant pop-up ads, being redirected to the App Store, etc. Considering that most of your content is recycled from other websites (but I was willing to overlook that fact), I'm deleting The Chive. Sorry, but pushing that crap on your user base just doesn't cut it for me. Good luck with your future endeavors, but I'll be spending my charity money elsewhere. I am a (was) religious user of this site and app, but the ads have made it unbearable. I literally don't even click on any videos anymore because I have to sit through a 15 second ad for each and every one! I could see watching one ad and then the rest would be ad free, but the BS on every single GD video gets old. Not to mention the pop-ups that happen all of the time. The Chive has sold out and I am sorely disappointed. Remember where you came from and take all of these one star reviews into account. You are literally missing my Chive Charities money because your app is so Corporate now. Hope it's worth it.

Are you guys not reading these reviews???. Posting another 1-Star review hoping you guys are working like mad to fix whatever is going on. Have been a Chiver since before Country Girl & this app has devolved into a mess. Galleries don’t load so often that I can’t even check to see if you have acknowledged the problem & are making an about face to fix it. The Chive is huge, you’ve got to have talented developers on staff. Are you choosing not to do anything??? This has been going on since shortly after the BFM coin dropped, coincidence? I have to guess that most of us have no problem with a pop-up here & there, unobtrusive adds at the bottom of the page or even mixed into the galleries. But the Chive app that I have loved for years is totally broken, adds, coding, whatever, just broken. I deleted it when it was on the last revision, and downloaded the new update with nothing but hope. All I got was nopes instead... Please fix my favorite escape from the day & I’ll be back in a heartbeat, all of us will.

I don’t get it. I’ve never had any trouble with this app, excluding the annoying pop ups that plague the platform from time to time but those are always fixed quickly. The only reason I gave 3/5 stars is because there’s one major problem I’ve been having and it’s quite frankly, a stupid problem to have. Every time I navigate out of the chive app, and come back to it, the feed is completely reset and I’m taken back to the home screen almost like I force closed it which is annoying when you’re half way through a gallery that peaks interest and have to do...ANYTHING else for a few seconds. I feel like it’s a dumb thing to complain about but it’s also a dumb problem to have. Especially when you’re searching old galleries. Good luck finding where you were. Once that problem goes away, you’ll have all 5 back. I love this app and the community behind it. iPhone XS Max 256 GB

Had to delete. After being a daily chiver for years, I’ve finally and sadly had to delete the app. TheChive has shifted business models. They used to provide amazing content aggregated from around the web for free. Their fun panels and positive outlook bled through and made your day better. What a great ride we had together. Unfortunately they now want a subscription based platform. So they packed the free version of the app full of ads. Ads always load. They pop up in the middle of scrolling. The pop up if you want to look at any of the content. TheChive will fix it... if you buy the subscription. Am I a cheapskate? No. I donate to their charities, bought their shirts and products. The major difference is that before, It was a mutually enjoyable experience. They ruined my side of the experience. I wish them well. I don’t pretend I’m important to them. I’m sure their new revenue stream will satisfy them in the short term. Too bad it won’t last since their experience is now terrible. Don’t download the free app. It will crash a bunch, eat your data, and load ads easily and content second.

Many editors, not enough editing. As much as I enjoy the content this app and what this organization provides, the grammar and conventions are lacking in a published site. It's understood when using slang like the adorable "doggos" and other slang, but "let's be hone" passes when it should be "let's be honest." Proper use of "your" and "you're" is ignored. There's many, and I mean I can find spelling and grammatical errors in almost EVERY post. And please choose either the British spelling or the American spelling of words. It appears that there's a bunch of frat boys running this outfit and it really should be polished. I say this, because I care, and I want what it best for theCHIVE. If I didn't care for your polish and your best, I wouldn't say anything. But I do. UPDATE: Too many intrusive ads. Scrolling down I’m automatically redirected to Safari and can’t enjoy the content. By the way, Wikipedia is NOT a source. Even your “facts” have no sources. Amateurs.

Shamefully disappointing.. Used to be an amazing app. Now every other thing is an ad thrown in your face. I especially love the ones that completely take over you phone and blast out noise even if your phone is silenced. Don’t forget about the adds you can’t scroll through either if your finger even comes close to it, it’s gonna load! Not to mention this app used to have a fair amount of general goodness to people. I loved reading about what the original crew was doing for charity. I loved reading about the outstanding human beings out there that selflessly try to make this world a better place. Whatever happened to RAKs? Are guys like John and Mac still involved at all? Whoever is running this app now desperately needs to look back to the beginning and go back to the roots! We don’t need 15 galleries a day of just attractive women, there are basically an infinite amount of sites dedicated to that. The CHIVE feels as though it represents the complete opposite of what it used to and that’s very disappointing.

Awesome but ads cause it to crash.. I love the chive. This is my go-to over Facebook. However, since the last update, the app freezes all the time for no reason while I’m in the middle of scrolling through galleries, video adds pop up all the time in the middle of a gallery, repeatedly, and at times, I’ll be redirected to the App Store for some random game download even though I never touched anything having to do with any ads. When I try to go back to the chive app, it just keeps going back to the App Store over and over again to a different game download each time and the only way to stop it is to close the app out. And closing the app isn’t even functioning properly. I double click the home button and swipe up to close it and when I click back on it, it’s still on the same page frozen. I have to close it again and wait at least 30 seconds to try and open it again. Please fix this issue. It is so frustrating and kills the battery even more than ever!

Ads, ads, ads. This was a fantastic app, I mean the best on the internet.i have been a daily user since 2013. Then they decided to sell a version of ad free for a monthly fee. I decided like most people that I only have so much money and can’t possible buy the premium version of every subscription out their because every sells one. The chive would place ads in the thread and you could simply swipe past it or they would open a video of you clicked on the ad. This was for the non premium subscription and I was totally fine with that. Now that they sell the premium version you literally can’t get past two pictures with out a video ad with audio turning on and redirecting you to their advertisement. I wish I was exaggerating if you get though two picture your going to get a ad video. It’s so intrusive you ant even enjoy the app. Shame on you Chive your fans believed in you because you said we would never sell out but you did!! I’ll be deleting it soon as I’m done with this review. It’s so bad you can’t boot the site if you wanted to.

Battery killer and sluggish. Been a loyal chiver since 2014...was really excited for the app and have had the app on a number of different phones. Lately though I’ve been really frustrated on how quickly it kills my battery. It seems I can only chive for a quarter of the time I used to before it drains my battery almost next to nothing. I’m assuming it does this due to all the ads it pushes on you all the time. I could really care less if the ads stayed or left as long as it didn’t kill my battery like it does. Also it seems like it takes forever to load the photos. It will load the first couple fine and then I’ll have to exit out of the app and then reload it to get to the other photos. This happens numerous times in a single post...then by the time I get it all loaded my battery is about dead. I still love the chive, love the content, and love what they stand for. Just really disappointed in the way the app works compared to its previous versions.

Fan of the Chive and WAS a fan of the app. This isn’t a knock on the community or the content- all stellar in my opinion. I don’t mind the ads, I get it. My issue is the same as others have mentioned, bogging down, freezing, taking an eternity (dial up memories) to load a single photo and dude, the GIFs forget about it. It’s like slow motion if/when they finally load. This is a relatively new occurrence. You went through a phase last year where the app froze regularly and managed to fix it. This was pre-embedded ads, maybe correlation there? Beyond the irritation that the content loads soooo slowly (it at all) is that the ads populate immediately. I’m sure it’s due to their comparatively small file size but still irritating as AF. Thanks for the rant. Love the Chive! Can we get someone on this issue?

How is the app this bad. I remember first downloading the chive almost 10 years ago now on my old iPhone 4 and it worked great, save for how long it took for gifs to load back then, but hey, that was to be expected at the time. Now, on today’s most advanced of advanced smart phone platforms, if you use the app for more than 5 minutes, the first thing to happen is some bad lagging. About a minute later, you get eternal loading wheels. Nothing will load, pics or gifs. Fast forward another minute or so and everything completely freezes. Think you can shut down the app and start over? Wrong again. Needs to stay shut down for a considerable amount of time to reset itself. Once it does, you’d think it’d be good to go for round 2? Wrong again. You’ll encounter the exact same sequence of events. And on a side note, a lot of the posts now are sincerely bad. I mean just really bad. The chive was once a good community with a good platform for the community members to get together and share a laugh or two over some solid posts and picture collections. Maybe it’s time to just let it die. Maybe I’m just old and cranky now.

The Old Chive is gone... and it’s sad.. As a long time Chiver, I have bought hundreds of dollars worth of Chive merchandise, donated plenty to their charities, enjoying their website for many years, and was thrilled when the first app appeared. I have always enjoyed the content... funny and uplifting threads, cat Saturday (where’d that go?), cute girls, interesting knowledge, comical gifs, interesting talent, and a general collection of everything you want to see online without all the crap and politics. Changes and updates to the app made some versions tough, but the Chive always redeemed themselves with fixes and better content. Until now. Every update is greeted with more ads, more merchandising, and so many more crashes... all with less true Chive content. And their only solution is to sell me an overpriced subscription that includes a coin, fewer ads, and random discounts from their store... golly gee, mister, wow that’s awesome.... I’m quite sad this will be the last month I’ll suffer through the frustration, as I feel the Chive served me greatly through the years and has ultimately let me down. As I delete the app, I can’t help but wonder if those two brothers even care anymore.

The Best Content Out There, But.... Please don’t get me wrong, because I love the Chive, the content they provide, what they stand for, and for all they do in providing to people and communities in need. However, the app itself does not work the best for me. It’s constantly being bogged down or freezes completely to the point where I often need to restart it, or just can’t use it period. Also, “pop-up ads” constantly cause the App Store to open on my phone, which I can not get to stop myself but rather have to let it run its course and hopefully be able to run the Chive app hours later. I’m not sure if it’s an issue with my phone (iPhone 6) or the ads they allow to run in their app. But, seeing as how I have other apps that do not have this issue I don’t think it’s my phone. For the reasons above though, I’ve decided to delete the app from my phone and plan on just viewing their web page on my down time. It’s too frustrating to be in an app where ads work phenomenally, but you can barely view the actual content the app was intended for. I mean this as constructive criticism because, as I said, I love the Chive. I hope that this review gets to them and they consider it wholeheartedly because I’m going to miss it on my phone. But, I’ll be enjoying their posts on Instagram and on their website from here on out.

Is this really you?. I love the Chive. I love your photo galleries and your commentary. I roll my eyes at the piles and piles of Uber hot unrealistic chicks, but then there’s that one day where it’s exactly what I want. I love your heart of gold and fundraising and RAKKING do-gooder attitude most of all. But WHAT IS UUUUUPPP with these ADS?? Like, guys. I realize that if I don’t pay, I’m gonna deal with some ads, but this is crazy. I just had to close a pop-up full-screen ad EVERY FIVE SECONDS. I could barely read a whole sentence in between each heartfelt profile video for a new Starbucks barista. I guess I’m lucky that it isn’t a loud video that plays even when my phone is on silent, but it still makes your free version completely intolerable. I can’t hang. I really will miss you, but you’ve made it pretttty clear you won’t miss me - unless I start paying you. That just doesn’t seem like who I thought you were. Also, why does my phone heat up so much every time I open more than two photo blogs? That never happened before the ads started either.

Ads are obnoxious and app is slow. The chive has some decent content collections, mostly sourced from Reddit and other platforms but there is some unique stuff in the mix too. Overall, it’s an entertaining site with a lot of content updated daily Unfortunately, the app is less than stellar. Content often loads slowly and seems to take a lot of phone processing power for the type of content it is loading. My old iPhone 6s used to get hot running this app compared to similar apps like Reddit or Facebook. The worst part however is the intrusive ads, especially the auto play videos with sound. I’m all for having advertisement on free to use sites but I typically use these kinds of apps during breaks at work or at night before going to sleep. Nothing worse than having a loud ad from my phone play unexpectedly for all my coworkers to hear, or wake up my girlfriend at night, all because I didn’t think to turn off my phone volume to look at a photo website. I’d like to use this app more but it had become so annoying that I rarely use The Chive and favor Reddit as I don’t have to worry about the crazy adds with its app.

You’ve lost me. It almost seems like a tragic breakup. We had some great times and I truly enjoyed the humor that I could always count on, especially when I needed some kind of pick me up. I stuck with the app after the introduction of ads, knowing that just like tv and radio, ads are a part of enjoying free content. I also thought it was perfectly fine that they offered a subscription based ad-free experience for those willing to pay for it. What I did not expect was that the quality of the end user experience with the app would become so degraded for those of us who don’t want to pay. They may still offer free content for every one who wants it, but with how slow the app has become, how choppy the downloading, having to stop after two or three pictures to wait for the next two or three to download, and the frequent redirects, it has become impossible to simply enjoy a little humor from this app. I have deleted it and will just have to find humor from another source. While The Chive may be a wonderful organization and community, they are limiting their exposure by making the app so unpleasant to use. I still love you, but I just can’t be with you anymore.

CRASHES. DELETING THIS APP.. Just updated to latest version again. Won't open up! Just crashes! Even after reload! Update on the new update: I’ve followed The Chive since before they had this app. It used to be funny and entertaining. Now it is all about reposted memes and bouncing boobs. I’m a guy and this is even too much for me. Not to mention all the ads, which after the last update they added MORE. Biggest complaint from everyone are the ads and what does Chive do? MORE ADS! As I scroll on the main page they’ve added short video clips between the galleries. Every time I scroll past one of those I get a short audio blip. My phone is on vibrate and the audio STILL PLAYS. Ridiculous. It has also been randomly going to the adverts web page even though I never clicked on the ad. This last update made that problem worse and it get stuck in a loop when I click back to the app it immediately goes back to the adverts web page, over and over and over, till I force close the app. The Chive started out well, now it’s about the ad money. I won’t pay for the ad free version and I will no longer use the app. You will also be losing any future donation’s to your charities. Chive has become Greedy, maybe that’s why the C in Chive is green.

Probably (used to be) the best app in the world. I would like to start by saying that Chive is the best social media alternative out there. Free of the usual drama and overall human stupidity displayed on places like Facebook. That being said the app has went down hill since I first started using it back in 2013. It uses a staggering amount of battery and makes my phone hot enough to cook an egg on. Then there are the ads, now I get that nothing is free in this world and Chive has to pay their bills, but when the ads render the app unusable and I find my self have to close and restart the app, just so I can get through two posts. All that being said, I am a dedicated Chiver and I will deal with the issues because I believe in what the Chive stands for and I will deal with the battery draining, app crashing, phone cooking Chive app (insert Ric Flair “wooo” here) because despite all of that it still better than having to scroll fifteen seconds in the dumpster fire known as Facebook.

Losing your way. This app was my go to for entertainment for years, now it seems they have lost their way. Too many ads for one. When the chive does any kind of fund raiser, the community blows the goals away time after time. Simply hold one for yourselves to keep the ads out and the community will come through. Secondly, and worse than the ads is the agenda driven content I’m now seeing. The Chive was about avoiding all of the divisive and hate filled content the internet is overrun with. Seeing posts about racism is exactly the kind of crap I and many others are sick and tired of seeing day after day, and we were always thankful that the Chive didn’t inundate us with it. That is no longer true, plus better vetting should be done because several of those posts and stories turn out to be false anyway. Guys, stick to what made you so popular and stay away from the divisive agenda driven crap.

Ads, Disabled Save, Can’t Play Music And Chive. I love The Chive. Been a Chiver since...well I’m old and wasn’t when I first saw the DAR. I have donated. That said, I’m gonna have to delete the app. First, they added TONS of ads. Leave a gallery, ad. Scroll through a gallery, an ad every 5 images. Ads popping up from the bottom. Some ads are impossible to figure out how to close. I’m a marketer, I understand needing to make money from ad sales. This is going too far. They have taken it so far that it’s impossible to listen to music or an audiobook while Chiving. As soon as you go into a gallery, music or book is gone. Silenced. I assume this is because some advertisements, there are those ads again, have audio. I don’t mind that. Many apps have them. None of them mute your music upon entering the app, in fact most play the ad over your music or book. Lastly, and I have no idea why. They disabled saving pics from the app to your phone. I know, you are thinking, so he can’t save some hump DAR photos! Well I don’t actually save those, it’s the funny stuff I save and share with my wife or family that I save. I can save images from the website, but not the app. Seriously guys. Back down the ads some and let us save pics again. I will download again in a few months to see if it’s better, but I won’t be making you ANY money from ads during that time. I honestly don’t mind paying for free funny through ads, but you have to balance that with good UX. You haven’t don’t that.

Probably the biggest supporter of ONLYFANS!. This was a really great app. Had a lot of interesting stuff on here but a lot has disappeared. Now it’s filled with what I like to call ads. Yes there are ads that you’re forced to watch but these are mandatory ads even though I’ve supported them by buying merchandise. I get it, it’s all about the money now and NOT about the content. Buy this, buy that, oh look more cool stuff to buy. You know people are broke right? This app has also started to support every girl on ONLYFANS. Wanna find who has an ONLYFANS page?, come find it in the Chive! I get it, people want money but they're not getting my money... again people are broke. There are too many places to find free naked woman and why would anyone pay for this? Go get a real job! Also, when the app starts, it shows “the Chive...probably the best app in the world”. Not close. These guys copy and paste a lot of stuff from Reddit. Come on Chive, you guys are better than this. I can easily just go to Reddit if that’s the case. There’s so many people that submit cool, interesting, and hot pics but it’s easier to copy from Reddit? What’s the point of iChive if you rarely use it? And not to mention, if you open any other app, let’s say text message, weather, email or what not... the chive app will restart. This is beyond ANNOYING. I don’t want to scroll to where I was all over again and forced to watch another ad just because the stupid app restarted.

Second time, second worst review. In a word, F***!!!. Like many others before me have said before, the Chive app has seen its best days behind it. This is my second review of the app and sadly nothing has changed. After this latest update, where they promised that many of the bugs had been addressed and resolved. Only to still, have the app continuously abruptly shutdown while I’m in the middle of looking thru it. From the mysterious ads playing somewhere in the distance while your trying to look thru a gallery, to the 15-30sec ad, that plays and may just freeze up just before you watch that 45sec video that you initially clicked on. Perhaps Chive charity should take up a collection and help its once, guiding beacon. Also, while we’re on the subject. I get hot chics bring in the guys...and girls. But how in the hell are we to believe that all of the “local Chivetes” are all total smoke shows. Not saying that we need a large Marge feature. Just more realistic women, maybe, one with a C section scar who has an il advised tattoo of the guy that she swore was the one. Fix this, if not for me, do it for Large Marge.

I’m done with the Chive - update. Trust me on all this below. You’ll see for yourself soon enough. You’ll love them at first the you‘ll see what I’m talking about. Have been checking back in the last few weeks to see if things got better since my last review. No way got much worse. Just had some f’d up audio commercial start playing out of nowhere and you can’t turn it off even if you close the app. F these guys with a capital F!!! And F Bill Murry. Don’t know why they support this creep. He is not a good guy. And who want to buy stupid coins with Bill Murray on them? For what? Just to give their money to these Guys. Wake up people!!! The greed of these guys got the best of them. You cans find better elsewhere. I’m done. Old review: The chive nation and charity are both awesome. However, the user experience is now miserable. The app is so glitchy and slow with frequent freeze ups I can no longer use it. Also, with the amount of ads I suspect that the owners are looking to cash out and are now at the stage of milking it for every dime they can squeeze out, not caring if their product suffers. Another competitor will come along and the chive Brother’s will have made their millions and then .....bye bye. It was a good run for a while though. I enjoyed most of it. Peace out.

Not the same as it once was. Huge fan of the app and have been looking at it for years now, pretty much since it first came out. And although the content remains the same high quality, the ads are just too much. Between the Apple store ad that pops up 5-6 times in a row (no matter what you do it keeps switching screens if you close it, leave it open, doesn’t matter), and the random ads that come up throughout the posts (not to mention even if you lightly scroll down and happen to actually touch an ad, it opens it...) make it such a pain to go through. Interestingly enough Chive went on a rant about Facebook a few months back and how they are charging companies (including Chive) to make more money and now they are doing the same thing. I’ll still log in daily but I wish they’d do something about it. I get the necessity to make income off of ad dollars, but at what cost? Super annoying Chive. Feels like you’re selling out for the almighty $$.

Sad day. I’ve been a fan of the chive for a long time and will continue to appreciate the content, gear, and community. Please fix the constant crashes and ad loops I am stuck in. Every time I open this app I expect a few crashes, this has begun happening over the last year. Now I can’t scroll through one post without freezing. Also I get stuck in an add loop where the App Store opens and try’s to get me to download one of your advertisers apps. When I press done or X out of the add I see the post and immediately get sent back to the App Store to download another advertised app. I really enjoy wasting my time on your app it’s great content and fills dull spots in my day with a laugh or a wow now and then. The chive is a 5 star app but not in the condition it’s in now. Sorry guys, I will re rate at 5 stars once its back to its original smooth self. Thanks for listening.

I get you want me to pay for the ad free version. I get that you want to promote you ad free paid service that you just launched but fixing the standard version needs to happen soon. If I can’t even look through the galleries with out getting stuck with random sound blips or a what I’m going to start calling the white pop up of pay up. The app is going to get round filed. I understand that as a company you need to bring in ad money to pay the people who make a living there and so that you can keep doing the awesome charitable work that you do. So no I’m not going to pay the monthly subscription fee but I’m more than happy to get ads directed at me, that being said if I don’t even see the ad then how are you justifying your invoices to your advertisers. Keep up the good work but please fix this so that I actually want to stay on the app so you keep making money off of ads that come up infront of my eyes.

Jumped the shark with ads. The Chive has always meant much more to me than just an app full of funny galleries. It’s a community with a cause. I’ve bought Chive merchandise, supported Chive Charities, and have been proud to call myself a Chiver. I get it, nothing is free. I know at the end of the day it’s a business, and businesses have to be profitable, but this app has recently become a minefield of ads. Noisy video ads that pop up without warning, bottom banner ads that slide up to fill half the screen, etc etc. The ads have crossed the line from being a perfectly acceptable consequence of enjoying free content to being a truly annoying experience. All of this conveniently getting progressively more annoying upon the introduction of a $4.99 a month subscription for “ad-free”. I’m deleting this app for now. Guys, please take a closer look at this direction you are taking. When you ask, we Chivers deliver. When someone is in need, we blow the roof off fundraising. If you’re hard up for cash, please consider treating us with some respect and laying it out straight, instead of hitting us with some Clockwork Orange crap. I bet a majority of the true Chivers would make it rain on a fundraiser to keep you all doing what you do. This overly aggressive ad strategy makes me feel like a commodity and not a member of the community.

Used to be great, now it’s “Buggy Ads ‘r’ Us”. I’ve always enjoyed the Chive. I would consider myself to be a daily peruser of the app, and have been for several years now. There have been buggy versions before. It happens. I must say, though, this latest revision is the worst I’ve ever seen. It opens very slowly, and once open, the galleries will usually only load the first picture and all the text. I can sit and wait and the other pictures will slowly appear, one after the other, over the course of 2-5 minutes (depending on the number of pics in that particular gallery). GIFs are even worse, and usually don’t load at all beyond the first one. I know some people complain about the number of ads, and yes, they have become absolutely pervasive, invasive, and obnoxious. Loud videos that pop up out of nowhere while scrolling a gallery, out of nowhere redirects to the App Store for some crappy app i would NEVER even ordinarily look at, and so on. Ironically the ads always load perfectly, while the galleries don’t. I have an iPhone 7 Plus. No issues with any other apps. The phone is not buggy or problematic in any way. The app functions the same (poorly) whether I’m on LTE or WiFi, regardless of the signal strength. I hope you folks can fix this, I really do. I miss looking at the galleries at lunch and during my downtime. Please. Please fix it. Fix ‘er up real nice for us common folk. Thanks, A.

Good people...but. Look, I’m sure we can all agree, The Chive is a wonderful group of fantastic people who help those in need and stand for what’s right. But guys, cmon, please fix your app. It’s bogged down with adds we can’t skip, and it forces the App Store to open almost every 5 seconds to show you an app that you “should get”. Also, holy battery sucking abilities Chive. I mean, I opened the app with 98% waited 3 minutes and then closed it. My battery was at 94%. Yes, I know this seems insignificant but I have an iPhone 8 and use a multitude of other apps, including several games. NONE of them are even close to the draining power of The Chive. I hope you guys read this, and take it to heart, I really do. I’ve enjoyed you all from the beginning but I can’t use your app anymore and I’m barely on my pc to just go to your website. It saddens me to say that I will no longer be able to look at your content because of the awful app. Please fix it!

I get it, but chill!. I’m a small business owner and I’ve had the fortune to see my business grow outside of my home office and into something that requires a complete staff, office space, employee benefits, 3rd party tech support, 3rd party payroll support and even an accountant who only knows my business name but not mine... The Chive has grown by monumental proportions since I joined the Chive Nation in 2012. You guys have built something to be proud of! But as of tonight, I just can’t handle the ads or the $60(ish) a year that it would take to go ad free. That $60 could be going towards a charity or my bar tab. After reading the last 30 reviews it seems we’re all on the same page. We love y’all and the content but the price to play is getting out of hand. There has to be a happy medium here. If not I fear that you as an organization will lose a large portion of your support. You do great things for those who need it most, but don’t forget about the majority of users out there who use your app as a pick me up or a place to shut down and relax. They are the ones who will ultimately make or break a company. The ad pollution that consumed what probably WAS the best has made the experience stressful and frustrating. I hope to see y’all rebound from this hiccup. Much love and respect!

Sigh.... Used to be an awesome app providing many hours of entertainment while sitting at the bar in an attempt to avoid real human contact through a digitally mediated experience. I understand the advertisements but the frequency with which the app crashes is becoming difficult to manage. Perhaps the crashes are an attempt at conserving the battery power that would otherwise be drained if you were allowed to operate uninterrupted. I’ve also considered the possibility that the crashes are an engineered failsafe to prevent your phone from melting into self destruct mode because after about five minutes without a crash, I need a welding glove in order to hang on the the hecking thing. All that being said this review is for the app only, the Chive itself is an outstanding community and I respect and appreciate their charity work and involvement with military and veterans. That Ma’am’s and Sirs, I will salute. I will check back for improvements in the chive app with hopeful anticipation, however; in the in interim I’ll be scrolling through the gifs over on Reddit. Ads galore and crashes abundant. A few years ago his used to be one of my favorite apps. Since then it has transformed into near meaningless content, the only new things they have are half naked women (which I enjoy let me assure you) but where is anything new? Most of the things posted I’ve already found in Reddit threads or are months or years old and are recycled. When I actually find something worth looking at or watching I’m bombarded with pop up ads. WAY too many to be justifiable for the kind of LAX content they cook up. Through the ads I would push on though. Annoyed but willing enough to put up with it. For the last several months the ap has done nothing but crash when I attempt to open a thread of pictures. I’ll get halfway through and the whole thing will freeze and send my phone into a frenzy. At first I thought maybe it was my phone, but after trying to open it on my tablet I was met with the same response. I’m probably done with Chive. Reddit has better content anyway and without the dozens of ads to slow you down.

Content is A+, app is STILL garbage and getting worse...unless you pay A LOT.. Could we just maybe charge a ONE-TIME $.99 (or at most $4.99...again ONCE, NOT per month) for the app, if nothing else but to forgo the constant barrage of useless ads & pop-ups? Seems the ads load quicker than the vids, which is maddening to say the least...Overall the “original’ content is always wonderful, but to have to time your swipe in between the “loading” icon that pops up constantly, or the random “let’s go to the App Store for no other reason than because we want to pump a game that will be gone within the year”, I have lost all hope for the app. I understand it takes money to do what they do, but to go ad-free for what they are asking is borderline extortion. I usually see a good portion of their posts on BuzzFeed a few days beforehand. Now I have been hit with the “BLACKED” pop-up (yes, that BLACKED... Incognito search that out if you really need to know). To have uninvited hardcore porn pop onto my phone from an app was beyond ridiculous. Apple doesn’t have many viruses that affect their products; fairly certain this app will change that real quick.

Look at this, buy this.. Once a great app to kill time at work has now become an ad riddled app that tries to keep sticking its hand in my wallet. I understand this is now a business and people need to get paid but these ads have become more invasive. It started out innocent enough as a little advertisement at the bottom of the screen but now it has morphed into pop up adds with volume playing automatically which blows my cover if I am killing time at work(can’t exactly say I am checking emails). Of course I now have the option to pay a monthly fee to get the ads removed. Included in the membership is a collector coin and 20% off overpriced merchandise. If your going to start charging people at least double check the content you are putting out. There are videos that don’t play and the same galleries re used(sometimes even in the same week). Will I still use the app? Yes. If you want to use this app keep your volume down and get ready to roam around in land mine field of ads.

Great site terrible app.. I’ve followed the chive since 2010 and I love the site, the content and everything the chive has done and continues to do for so many people. The app is the problem, first off just opening it cuts off any music or podcasts that is playing which is annoying. The biggest problem is the f@$!ing ads. I don’t click on them but either I scroll past them or just don’t touch my phone (iphoneX) and they pop up open my safari and or App Store and just redirect in a loop until I just close out the app and my internet/App Store. I love the chive but the ad problem with the app as turned me from a 5-7 day a week user to maybe one or two days. As soon as the ad monster tries to take over I’m out for the day. John you have done amazing things for a lot of people. Please fix the app so more chivers can enjoy your work without the frustration.

Love it and don’t. The title says it all. I’ve been on Chive many years now and for the most part I love it. All the pics, the videos, the FYIs & DYKs, not to mention the charity work and the stories both celebrating and informing those in need and the stories of or veterans. I go a couple places that have Chive TV now and I dig it. Couple things killing me is for some reason, no matter what the device, the app uses more battery than any other app I have. Next would be I’ve always had a few pics or gifs never load or take forever. Finally the last thing would be the app itself working. Many times in the past 3 or so months the app won’t load or crashes a couple of time before running good. Maybe there is a lot of fans using it, idk but has become an issue this year. I don’t mind the occasional ad and at least are usually for the Chive. I would gladly give this app a 4 or 5 when some things are fixed as I have done so in the past.

Ads have killed the Chive. I wish the ads were just simple, non-moving pictures that popped up every once in awhile as I scroll; but they are not. They either pop up with sound, loud and annoying at the end of a contemplation; are a small, clickable banner at the bottom with a pretend ‘x’ that will most certainly send you to a third party page or the ad store; or a large, moving ad that slows down your phone and causes the app to crash…a lot of the times you get ALL three. I love the CHIVE and the content that they provide. They do sooo much charity, they bring joy and laughter to many, and produce pretty awesome merch…but how is anyone going to know if their app keeps crashing, if their phone freezes, or the people rage quit because they keep accidentally clicking ads while trying to enjoy the content? Please work on the app. Make an ad free option or something, because Chivers who use the app will certainly pay for it.

I’m finally loving the app. They seem to have fixed the annoying bugs and crashes which kept me away from using the app. Just a few minor annoyances left like sometimes I go away and when I relaunch I’m at the top instead of where I left off. I really wish there was a way to bookmark a location in the scrolling down from post to post or perhaps a “last viewed” button that would take me back down. Sometimes I have to scroll a long long way to find where I left off if I’ve been away for awhile. I prefer the funny stuff and find most of the posts featuring women less than wholesome (more girl next door and real women, much fewer Instagram models and photoshopped b*tches) Say what you want about The Chive, the charity does wonderful stuff for people in need.

Content is great when it finally loads!. I’ve liked this app for years but in the last few months of my iPhone 6s and now on my new iPhone 8 it causes rapid battery drain. Multiple percentage points drop off in minutes and the phone back starts to get hot. I worked with their tech support on my old phone and at one point I thought it had improved but now with a new phone I’m dissatisfied again. I stream iHeartRadio but if I open this app it overrides the other and kills the audio immediately (used to only do this if I clicked on a video). I open this app consistently less, and every time I wonder why I still have it. Whether you’re on a WiFi or cellular connection if you want to view a gallery set your phone down for 5 to 10 minutes and if you can handle the heat from your stressed battery, the content may finally be viewable. . . Update - I went through several months of other reviews and I saw some of the same and other complaints. Obviously nothing is changing so I’m done. Sorry Chive! I deleted the app a couple minutes ago.

Advertisements Are Unbearable. I have been a loyal chiver for some years now. I understand that nothing in life is free, especially a free app. I know that companies like this must have advertisements on their sites to pay for all of the awesome free content that we receive. However, in the last few months, the ads have become unbearable. Every video has a 15 or 30 second ad that had to be viewed and not skipped (which operates flawlessly) only to get to a video that doesn’t load properly or buffers endlessly. You can’t touch anything on the screen without clicking on some ad that redirects you to their website, and even after using the back button, you will continue to be automatically be redirected the the advertisers site until you either view it for a period of time or close he app and reopen whatever it was you were on. Again I understand that this is a business and that businesses need to make money somehow, but the fact that the unrelenting flurry of ads came about right around the time the $4.99/ month ad free subscription came around is a bit ridiculous.

Tired of pop up ads. I used to be one this app daily. Typically multiple times a day. Anytime I had a moment and needed a quick dopamine fix. Then the ads started. I get that this is a business and you need to keep it going, but come on. The ads are at a point that they are ridiculous and I rarely even open it anymore. Pay for the ad-free experience you say? It’s easier to just delete this app and go elsewhere. I’ve donated to Chive charities, spent money on merch, and supported theChive for several years. For a long time it was part of my daily routine. Now, because of the ads, I rarely even open the app or visit the site anymore which means I’m not buying merch or donating anymore either. You can’t have it both ways. Either you have loyal supporters who make theChive a part of their life or you make your money from ads and see a huge turnover in subscribers and supporters. This whole site was designed to sell merch and did a fantastic job at first but as the business grew, so did the overhead and the need for more money. It no longer has the same “community feeling” that it did 3-4 years ago. Now it’s just another business vying for attention in a world where we are already overloaded with those. This App Still Doesn't Really Work For Me. Update: I can no longer put up with this. Every time I’m automatically redirected to the App Store for some stupid game to purchase I just think about how I’m probably being bothered with this garbage so the Chive staff can have another absurd office party. I’m over it. Original review: For a long time now, this has been my only “time waster” app. I love the fun galleries. But this app just doesn’t work well. I have an iPhone X and keep it updated, but consistently for the past year (maybe even longer), galleries load very slowly. Even with full LTE bars or connected to my WiFi at home, the first few photos will load, but the remainder will be blank gray squares. I don’t even bother trying to open gif galleries. This is across three different phones and who knows how many software versions. Usually they will finish loading, but I have to be very patient. I put up with it because I require memes. 5 star content, 2 star ease of use.

Amazing content, amazing bugs. Long time Chiver. Always enjoyed their content and I love what they’ve done recently to change the online publishing landscape. What I can’t understand is why their app has continued to be buggy for my iPhones over the years. There always seems to be issues with something, and most notably is how it can’t seem to handle being opened after it’s ignored for a few hours without making my iPhone 7+ go haywire, and more frequently is how it will stop my music or audiobook whenever I open the app, and I have to turn the music back on while using the app to continue. I really love having a paid subscription where there are no ads. That is more than worth the price for the quality content, but this app crashing and causing these issues is driving me nuts. Y’all.... please PLEASE do something about this. The music stopping is so consistent I can’t believe it. You have a great thing going but I’m literally writing this review because I had to try 5 times to open the app and it kept crashing, so I’ve spent this moment writing this review instead of checking the DAR. Privacy concern*updated*x2. I will update when I receive a satisfying response. Everytime I open the app, my iPhone 11 displays a "the give pasted from..." notification. Where is my cut/copied pasting to and why is it doing it without my input or consent? Updated: from 1 to 3 stars; the above problem seems gone, however, the chive app is still the only app to cause my iphone to have massive lag and/or freezing issues. Both within the app itself, and it causes the same difficulty in other apps I'm using if I leave chive running in the background. #2: app deleted. App will almost completely freeze iphone within 10 min of use. Problem is immediately corrected by closing app; however, closing the app often takes 5 minutes of up swiping to get bring up open applications and close The Chive. Down to 2 stars. I love wasting the day away scrolling through the hilarious content, but your app only seems to get worse year after year. It has too many background processes.

Fix the constant crashing already…damn!. I’m a longtime Chivette. I’m not much of a social media kind of person so The Chive has always been my go-to app. There’s lots of awesome content you don’t have to scour through multiple sites bc they do that for you. There’s some cool stuff they advertise…I will admit I’ve bought a few awesome gifts from looking at their ads. There are tons of ads now but that’s not even my issue. My main issue is the constant crashing that’s been going on for a few years now. Once it crashes I have to restart the app 3-4 times for it to act right and I know I only have a limited amount of time (generally enough to look through 3, 4 galleries tops) before it crashes again. The Chive is the ONLY app I have an issue with doing this. No others. How can this still be an issue when it’s been going on for literally YEARS?! Fix the bugs already & you may have (even more) paying customers!

Move buttons. The ‘flag inappropriate’ needs to be moved from the ‘save photo’ because I flag stuff that I actually mean to save. Also why do galleries repeat often for days/weeks?

Glitchy McGlitch Face. Love the Chive content and probably is the ‘best app in the world’ but the platform is just so unreliable. Constantly freezes, crashes and causes my entire phone to lock up. Oh, and the ads are getting beyond a joke. I get that it’s a free app and they need the advertising revenue; however the advertising website re-directs ruin the experience for me.

Worst ads in older update now fixed (edited). The latest update, with the push to purchase an ad free service, has upped the annoyance factor of its ads with noisy media opening whenever you attempt to view content. Instead of enticing me to purchase the service, this made me delete the app. Well, that was then. 26 October. Now, after listening to their fans, thechive has fixed the noisy media ad issue, adjusting the ad frequency and blocking the noisy stuff. So, because they listened and responded appropriately, they have me back.

Pathetic. This is the worst app ever as it never let's download the pictures quickly or when it does it never lets you to see all the pictures at the end as it hasn't downloaded them or it just stops and you have to constantly refresh it

Good, but could be better!. Love the pictures, love the humour, love the entire vibe of the app. Unfortunately the app lets itself down, constantly crashing or freezing and is SO hard on battery life it’s insane!

Gone baby gone. Loved this app for many years but now over it. Too many ads and glitches. Constantly freezes my phone after viewing a few galleries. And now after deleting and re-installing hoping this would fix it, the app now crashes every time I try to open it. Game over Chive, the app is now deleted from my phone. If you fix the app and these reviews get better I may give you another shot.

What have you done to scrolling?. Since the last update the app hangs/crashes and has to be restarted if you scroll down more than a few pages. Why do you do this? Every few updates you manage to ruin something. Fix it please

Crashes like a Japanese plane. After opening one or 2 folders this app literally slows to a grinding halt, much like when someone picked up the phone in the 90’s while you were trying to download that picture of a bikini clad model, only to have the dialup internet drop out and you were left with 3/4 of a set of cans and the head of the girl, coupled with one handlebar of a Harley. Seriously though, the content is awesome but he app it’s self is terrible. Not sure what’s causing it, but it ain’t my phone (iPhone 6S), definitely the app as it’s been like this for a while. 2 stars.

App constantly freezes. Good content but app freezes constantly. Have to close and re-open several times over short periods and this is getting frustrating. Please fix. I note there are plenty of reviews from users experiencing the exact same issue.

Amazing app but freezes. Been using the app for years but the app will start going very slow and then freezes the whole phone. Once you close the app it’s works again for a little bit but it will freeze on you again. Sometimes takes 20 secs before I can even get out of the app

Probably not the best app ever!. Crashes constantly, freezes, without fail, every time I use the app, when it does work you are bombarded with ads. I have been persistent with it because the content is good but I have now deleted it because it now freezes my phone too. It’s such a shame.

Latest update sucked 😭. The app freezes and closes itself out. Scrolling through 1 lot of memes takes several minutes due to the constant freezing and lagging, giving 1 star for attention (sorry guys 😢) but I do truly love the app ❤️❤️❤️ I have an iPhone btw not sure if that helps 👍🏼

What a shame. “Almost” the best app in the world, if only the app developer could manage to fix the bugs! Gave it my last shot, you blew it. I wanted to love this app so much because the content is so great but I’ve given it three strikes and I’ve had to delete it. I could deal with the crazy ads and clunky design of the app. I could deal with the freezing and restarts. But now you freeze and completely crash my phone and I’m so over your lack of care to even try to fix these issues. They have been ongoing for months and so many reviewers comment exactly the same things, how could you just not fix your app or try to address these problems? Sorry guys, I hoped for better from someone who claims to be ‘probably the greatest’. Best wishes x

Very bad software rendering a once great app useless. Been on chive for years sick of these latest updates that ruined the app Takes minutes to load gifs many of which are unwatchable as they are so slow and jumpy Constant ads , too scared to watch videos as I know ads will come then won’t play due to the bad software. Everytime I decide to watch a video I usually end up shutting down the app Can’t even load a scroll worth of pictures Needs total rehaul of software I suggest the developers sit down and try use the app. The developers need to spend 5-10 minute and sit down and actually use the app I can’t believe the developer hasn’t used the app as a user .

Oh. My. God.. Seriously this app started to go really well... and the subscription is worth it just to get rid of the ads and it made the whole thing smoother. But then they added recommendations and now it not only freezes... when you exit the app it freezes whole phone! I’m back to browsing in chrome! Seriously guys you’re better than this!

IOS 11 effs this up. App amazing. Most frequently used on my phone. However since updating to ios 11 it constantly freezes. Not developers fault, Apple is the culprit. Hence 5 stars.

As glitchy as ever. Probably the worst app I’ve used. Glitches all the time so you have to force close. Just randomly while scrolling everything goes black. I opened it just now and tapped a thread and it went black.

Great…… when it works.. I have used the chive app for many years. It’s great when it works. The latest update is working like a power virus on my phone. It must have a memory leak or something as it causes the phone to lock up until the app is closed. The phone also gets very warm when this happens and it’s hard to close or turn off. Some versions of the app work fine then along comes one of these broken ones and it usually takes 6 months before one comes out that works again. GIF’s seem to cause the most problems. Sick of crashes and spam. Love the site, Chive is very funny, but I'm over the site crashing constantly and the pop-up spam telling me that I've won stuff.....enough developers, fix it ! App constantly freezes, about time you fixed it, folks

Ads, wow.. Can’t watch a 15 second clip without a 15 second advert. Constant banner ads. Now they have added a great new feature that force send you to the App Store for apps you don’t want. I get roughly two witching a minute every single time I open the app! All justified by giving you a pay per month option to remove ads. Good news though! If you add the website to your phone on the home screen, you can click through with the convenience of an app, without all the total bs! Man this is disappointing. I really don’t mind ads, you’ve gotta make money somehow. But the level of intrusion they are comfortable with just screams lack of care for the consumer. Once was the best app ever made.

Sexist and crashes too often. I’ve tried to ignore the sexist posts of naked women, as there can be some genuinely great content. But the last few weeks have been terrible and I can’t even see the good stuff anymore. Sooooo slow and keeps crashing. If you posted naked men even half as often as you post naked women, well, that would be something. It seems pretty clear The Chive only value women for what they look like. Pathetic.

Pictures take forever to load and it's riddled with ads. Good content when you finally get to see it though

On fire!. Love the app, but probs with latest update. Just closing out on opening. Can’t get on on iPad with latest iOS.

Pop ups and ads render it unusable. The site is fine, the content is great, but the ads are awful. Used to just be endless pop ups, so I thought I’d give it another try when I saw it had been updated, but now it automatically plays audio ads. Absolute trash

Unresponsive / heats up iPhone. Most recent update makes my iPhone heat up so much to the point I need to shut down app, also becomes slow to respond to scrolling. Used to be good. Maybe not have so many gifs and this seems to be the issue.

Login. As you have to login in now to see full content, created account then try to login and doesn’t work. Try to login in with Facebook same thing, says I am logged in but try to access something as says I have to login. Please fix this.

They don’t care. With so many bad reviews about ads, crashes, freezes and bugs over a long period of time there has been no change. Sorry, I am mistaken there is a solution. Pay for it. Coming from a company that prides it’s self on charity and sticking it to the man this feels like a cop out.

Thewholeone. For a developer that claims to have ‘probably the best app in the world’, I would expect that I could open a gallery and view more than three or four pics before the app freezes and becomes utterly useless. Seriously guys, you have a large base of loyal users who are becoming increasingly frustrated with this issue which you seem to be making no effort to rectify. I’ve read that some reviewers are deleting the app all together and I’m not far off doing the same. Fix the issue or remove your inaccurate tag line.

Crashing. Been a chiver since I had opposable thumbs, but felt a little lost in this world since being unable to open the app and look at even a single pic! Crashing this app daily on my up-to-date phone! Deleted it as totally unusable

Update. The latest version is completely unreliable, every time I open the app it freezes my entire phone and it becomes unresponsive. On the odd occasion it does allow me to view any content it freezes half way through and the above happens. Love the app but am frustrated with the update.

Fix your app!!!. Seriously, fix your app. There are so many issues with it ranging from crashing randomly, not reopening when going between apps, random ads popping up to the worst problem of them all, inhaling my battery. Everyone knows the content is great, but your delivery model is rubbish.

Used to be awesome but the app is no good. The Chive has been my daily time drain of choice for years. It rocks as a concept and I love it. But recently the app is not working right. It hangs and freezes after a minute or two, my phone gets hot like it’s in overdrive and then the app crashes. Chive, fix the app! Please!

Screen fitment. Great app, always loved it but it still not optimised for iPhone plus screens, currently using it on an iPhone 7 Plus and I have a black band along the bottom plus it all seems a little bloated and blurry

Crashes. Every. Single. Time. Using an iPhone 6s this app crashes every time I use it without fail. Just freezes and forces me to hard quit. Definitely can’t suspend and come back to it. A shame because I love the content but rarely use the app because it’s so unreliable and buggy. Pass. Use the website.

Great content, terrible app.. This app is the buggiest, slowest, power consumer I have ever seen. It crashes frequently. There are an insane amount of ads. I got told at one point my “iTunes purchase could not proceed at this time” (hint: I wasn’t buying anything). This app freezes every single time I open it and crashes at least half the rest of the time. I would have given up years ago except for the content, which is a good way to pass the time. A more stable, less frustrating, app would be 5 stars.

Newest update broke the app. Can’t even look in a single library anymore without it crashing. Tried reinstalling. Broken

Too many ads. Way too many ads for it to be of any real use. Just a complete waste of time.

Long time user considering deleting the app. As much as I like the chive community and and the content they post, I’ve had the app through my phones in the past for probably 4 years now. Their has been a few rough patches but they had been fixed most times. The Bad... For the last few months I can’t even go through one posted gallery without the App Store opening to something random or it dragging me to a web page. It does this 10 times in a row not even being able to scroll before it pops open again as soon as I return to the app... but in the past week or so it had developed to no longer opening something it’s just freezing my phone to the point I have to do a power reset to get my phone to work, it is currently the worst running app I’ve ever had on my phone. Also how about when you watch an un-skip-able add on a video you make it so we don’t have to watch one on every single video. I remember in the past it was like every 5 videos you clicked on played a add not every single one, I’ve taken to looking for the videos you post on YouTube just so I don’t have to deal with the chive messing with the operation of my device.

Maybe it’s just me.... But I’m losing roughly 10% battery per gallery.

Blanka. Used to be fantastic. I stood up alot for their right to advertise, and when the programming sometimes wasn’t great. It went right to crap after a while, so i deleted. Came back six months later, and it won’t load legitimately 80% the time, and my formerly perfectly functional iphone 8 now has a freezing problem. Just deleted again, won’t be back.

Not as good as it once was. This used to be a great app, for the last year or so it’s become unavailable. Crashes every 5 minutes on both of my phones.

Terrible App upgrade. I had to delete the app. It takes an average of 5 mins to get into it with 4-5 crashes each time. Even when you get in you get kicked out fairly quick. So sad, it used to be awesome. Not so much anymore...

Tons of lag. The app takes forever to load and crashes repeatedly - not device or connection dependent.

Absolutely crushes battery life!. App needs some serious work. It drains my phone battery ridiculously fast. I can watch it go down, like 10-20% in the time it takes to go through one gallery. Phone gets hot and just drains! Zero of my other apps do this. Content is amazing but app needs major optimization work.

Gifs play too fast on iPhone. Great app - but chive gifs play way too fast on my iPhone 13 - support has been alerted multiple tomes but doesn't seem to be able to (or wish to) fix this. Doesn't happen on my iPad or Mac for same content.

When using the app I'm getting a virus like pop up.. Not sure the reason but I keep getting a fake alert from Apple saying I have a virus or I've won an Apple prize. Straight bs.

New Version Sucks BFT. Glitchy, spam riddled and redirects for you out of app to adds. Did you sell off?!? Probably the best site to try and scam you. Buy the monthly version so you don’t get spammed or maybe just delete the app you’ve used and supported for years and go to the next fad out there that’s not asking for money.

F'ing pop ups!. The pop up ads are ludicrous. You can’t view anything without being redirected to the App Store to download some garbage they are being paid to advertise.

Great content, app is more like a virus. App freezes or crashes frequently, ads are overwhelming, redirects and opens browser constantly...my favourite app for content, but it’s plain awful to use now

Constant crashes. A few galleries work fine when scrolling but crashes instantly ever time I open 95% of them.

Full of spam. Constantly popping up ads and sending me to the App Store for other garbage. Don’t waste your time on this.

I love ads. Worse and worse everyday. Please put more ads. One every picture and video is not enough.

Unusable. Content wise it’s good. The app is however it’s literally unusable. It constantly freezes my phone (iPhone 8), redirects to Apple store, or opens up other ads, and will drain your battery 10% in the span on 2 minutes! Using the ap is an exercise is intense frustration,. I’ll probably delete- I can’t use it anymore anyway- and give it 6 mths and try downloading again to see if anything’s been fixed.

Horrible experience. The app touts itself as the “probably the best app in the world”. Yet it freezes and crashes all the time. On the bright side this app is so processor intensive that he heats my phone up and keeps my pocket really warm when it’s cold out.

Great app, tons of spam. When I am going through albums it often pops up safari and brings me to spam sites. Deleted the app that otherwise is great. Hadn't happened in a while but another spam occurrence is when the app would just take over the speaker and beep code red sounds. Really annoying.

Constantly freezes. I’m quitting. The app freezes so often it’s no longer worth it and there appears to be no attempt to fix it. Very disappointed.

Freezes with ads. I love it, but when you are scrolling it will freeze when certain ads pop up on the bottom. It blows because you have to wait until it changes to scroll again.

Used to love it. Recently I have found that when I use Chive and only Chive I get a pop up saying I have a chance to win something from apple. It is happening so often that it is has become very annoying and has lead me to delete your APP. Sorry to go but you might reconsider this type of sales approach and or revenue. Sincerely Craig

Probably the worst app ever. Content is great but the app freezes so much that you can’t even make it through one post without having to close the app (when your phone unfreezes). This has been an ongoing issue and has never been addressed by all the “bug fixes” with each update.

Latest update is still a bust!. Updated after new update Oct. 20/21. Still crashes every time I try to go into the app! I KNEW I should not have updated the app, because it never seems to work right when they update it! App was working fine, now it crashes every time I go into a gallery. You also removed the double tap zoom? Why? Because it was helpful? I can’t even use the app now! What a waste. Do not update!

IChive and comments open in browser now. Why would you have IChive links open in the browser and not the app? That is the most stupidest thing you have done. Not the first time either. Put it back as opening in the app. Even the comments are opening in the browser now. It can’t even use the same tab. Keeps opening more and more of them.

My Stranger Saviors. I rarely submit anything that might end up on the chive be it gallery’s or comments. When I found this site from a friend I don’t recall how many years back it was the escape I needed from my own personal problems and it opened my eyes to how incredible an online community could truly be. It has helped me through tears and brought me to tears of both joy and sadness. I am now the happiest I’ve ever been in my life and even though I’ve never met anyone (that I know of) associated with the chive, this band of misfits on the internet has changed my life. Great Content, Terrible App. From a long-time Chiver (since 2012) I hate to say it, but I had to delete the app recently. For the past year or so I’ve been slowly using it less and less due to the crashes and ad issues. After a year of frustrations and hoping it would get fixed soon, I couldn’t take it anymore. The app is essentially unusable now. Ads will automatically take you to the IOS store without clicking on anything. Sounds will play in the background while my phone is on vibrate, making it impossible to play music while scrolling through galleries. Pop up ads take over the screen and make scrolling jittery. There are many more instances than I can remember or care to list. I still love the Chive and hope to return to the app in the future once these issues have been resolved. Up until the past year it’s been a small source of joy in my day.

Spam on. I have been using the app for a long time. In light of that and how much I have enjoyed it, giving it a bad review took some encouragement. The app constantly has spammy pop ups claiming I won "this" or "that" which gets in the way of the content which itself is interspersed with more ads. It takes up way too much space and honestly the app has only gotten worse with time which is really disappointing. So I uninstalled, switched over to just using the webpage, which worked for some time. But now going to the chive website on my phone I’m met with a spammy pop up that redirects me elsewhere. Same deal on my laptop, and if I try to turn on an adblocker I’m met with an inescapable “show some support banner.” I’ve bought the merch, participated in fundraising for 6 years.... you’re sending a clear message chive, it’s not the community that matters anymore, it’s the money and that’s truly sad to see. You’ve lost my support.

They Fixed Ads! Just pay for Premium!. Chive really? There are so many ads I can’t even browse your content anymore. Every other “post” is now sponsored, an add 2-3 posts large, random audio emits when surfing posts, adds just pop up repeatedly without clicking anything and a required video clip add to watch every time I want to see a video clip. Get your collective heads out of your backsides and start focusing on producing quality content, with limited adds, that’s original and not copied\reposts from some other web source. As it stands now you are asking us to pay a premium price for what? Premium service? No, you are drowning us in advertisements and expecting to charge us for broken hot garbage. No thank you. John, fix this please. No more new Chive endeavors, new lines of Bill Murray golf clothes, how about just a functioning app to start? You guys cannot even pull off basic things that made the Chive great and it’s showing, badly.

Great!. Update: The app is fine, but certain common functionality is off. If you accidentally dislike something, you are unable to “change your mind”. You’re stuck with it! Also, some of the pictures, in a post, won’t show, and that is very random, and occurs just enough to be a bothersome, but it doesn’t happen all the time. However, the issues listed below no longer happen, so there has been progress. There are only a few things that I still have to go see on the website, when looking at certain categories, thus the 4 stars, but I would say more like 4.5. Aside of a very small thing, this app is fantastic! I check here before I check my email!

Great content... When it doesn't kill my phone.. Let me start by saying I love the Chive. I have for a long time now. But this app... Bro, y'all gotta do better than this. I thought maybe it was my phone, but I've heard several people say they have issues with this app. First, the pop up adds. I open an article and I'm send to the app store over and over again until I close and restart the app. Second, it boggs my phone down sooo much. One could argue that maybe it's my carrier except for the fact that I have Verizon's best plan possible. I can run hotspot on 3 devices and play PUBG faster than I can browse your app. Third and possibly the most annoying, it destroys my battery. It's so bad I'm losing about 1% every 30 or so seconds. It's almost worth deleting and just following the Instagram. (iPhone 7+ on Verizon)

Not the best app in the world. I absolutely love the chive but this app terrible!!! It crashes and crashes and crashes and crashes and crashes.... you get the point, the point is... it crashes. I have had multiple different iPads and there have been many different updates to this app, and guess what... it crashes. Always has and I guess it always will. I would just go to the website site and do it that way but there are so many ads that it drives me crazy. I understand that is how they make money, but then again, I did pay for the app back in the day when that was an option. That lasted about a week then they got rid of that and my money was just flushed I guess. You’d think the people that paid back then would have got something, but no. I guess I’m just done with the chive, I love it and don’t want to be, but I don’t know what else to do. In my tens years of having apple products this is my first bad review, that’s how annoyed I am.

Was good, but now...just no.. The app has always been glitchy - no denying it. But with the latest update it’s downright unusable. I have an iPhone X - this phone is blazing fast regardless of I’m on WiFi or using Verizon service. Every other app is quick - except Chive. It takes an ungodly amount of time for images to load, and if their are gifs it almost never loads. When reviewing similar albums at the bottom of a viewed album - tapping to navigate to the next doesn’t work half the time and when it does it takes 10-15 seconds. Out of habit I open up Chive thoroughout the day, and get through maybe half of a single album and then I shut it down because nothing loads or only a few images load causing me frustration. The only thing this app does right now is increase my level of annoyance.

Love the chive, frustrated by the app. I’ve been a long time chive follower and I’ve had the app for a long time as well. I love the chive and all that it stands for However I’ve let this go on long enough without saying anything. The app itself is horrible on my phone. It takes forever to load the entire post and sometimes doesn’t load it unless I refresh, then go to other posts and back to it, refresh again etc. Sometimes the ads freeze and I have to get out and get back in. Sometimes the app itself freezes even as I was just scrolling through an already-loaded post and will close out on its own. And forget about any posts with gifs. I have an iPhone 7 btw, and it happened on my previous Samsung as well (esp for videos on the Samsung). Considering they call it the best app in the world, it’s really frustrating.

I Tried, But it Didn’t Work Out. Comparing the Chive of years past to this one is a hands down loss for the Chive of today. TheChive has unfortunately gone the way of the Failblog/Cheezburger and has turned to posting garbage that is totally generic and in no way resembles what should be posted on TheChive. I tried to ignore it, but I just can’t anymore. TheChive has become yet another generic media distribution site, the only difference between it and others like it being its name only. It’s all the same trashy posts you can find on trashy places just like it, aiming purely for clicks and not actual entertainment. It’s boring, lazy, and soulless post curation like this which is safe and homogenized, nothing too far out of the comfort zone of “satisfying” posts, facebook tier memes, and ragebait. I’m done. If I want to browse TheChive, I know now that the Wayback Machine is my best bet.

A Broken App - Made Even Worse With Ads. Wow, how do you bring down The Chive user experience? Why, with the Ishtar of Apps, that’s how. Here’s what’s waiting for you - Crashes (even when you just try to login), Videos that won’t load, Pictures that mysteriously go half screen, did I mention the crashes? It has now become so useless, that even the half baked coders who made this should be embarrassed. Where before the ads were annoying - (by the way, the aluminum can in the trash is just that, trash! A cute idea about potential and recycling when viewed once or twice, becomes soul sucking after viewing 15 - Good news is that with the crashes you can’t see it, so I guess it’s got that going for it, which is nice . . .) Now the ads just add insult to the injury. This is not a Cinderella story, stay away from this App, til it is redone and fixed.

Neither app nor site. Quick add on: everything below is correct, which means I am hesitant to subscribe. Id glady pay but the app crashes and overheats your battery all the time, and from every other review I’ve read, that hasn’t changed. CHIVE, lemme know if you fix the app, I’ll consider subscribing. Can you give a negative review of all things chive at this point. This app is garbage, and now you can’t even visit the mobile site without full page pop up ads jumping up every minute telling you you’ve won’t an amazing gift card with no option to close, you only try to click back to no avail! I am deleting the app and walking away, finally, after giving them more chances than I can count. REDDIT IS NEXT! How do you guys just ignore so much negative feedback? Every review for the last year is bashing what you’ve done, how you have ruined what used to be a great community...and you guys do nothing. Sad.

Getting worse.... Navigation of the Chive site I almost impossible on an iPhone as the print ends up being so small. Even on an iPad it’s a constant “flip” between full screen (in order to few the pic) and “caption” so you can read the comments which is too small to view because the comments knock out the bottom of the screen. Regarding the purchase of merchandise, there are constant "offer" boxes floating that block your view of products with no way to kill it. Service inquiry response is very slow, especially during the holidays with shipping dates of over 3 weeks for in stock items. Lastly, they give you free shipping on orders over $50, but when you use you bonus points and it puts your order at $48 they remove the free shipping and charge you $5.95 for shipping - kind of chintzy. They have unique items, but no longer worth the aggravation.

Freezes up, drains battery, makes phone hot. I got used to the ads, finally, but this latest update has brought on new issues, which are highlighted in the title of this review. The app freezes up while scrolling. Perhaps, my iPhone 7 doesn’t have the processing power, but it tries, even with no other apps running in the background. In just one session of my morning ritual on the toilet, the battery drained a full 10% in about 10 minutes. Lastly, the phone gets scarily hot to the touch, which doesn’t happen with any other apps that I’m aware of. I’ll throw in a disclaimer. It could be an issue with my phone, but it’s only a few months old with no apparent damage. I still enjoy the content, but I’m about to delete it, because I can easily find another venue to kill time in a more seamless fashion.

Used to be awesome!. As the title suggests, this app (and site) used to be awesome... but now, it’s all about the almighty dollar. At first, it was not SO bad; they just added an ad banner to the bottom of the app; then 15-30 second ads on EVERY video, even if the video is only 8 seconds. Now, they’ve started limiting content to free users. To get any content worth seeing, you have to pay for a monthly subscription (I believe it’s $5/month). The other thing that’s driving me crazy: the site used to be about entertainment with just a splash of objectifying women... now, it’s like 3 or 4 posts out of 5 are “objectify this woman now. She does X for a living.” And it’s all about T&A. Even the posts that are supposed to be “randomness” or “awesomeness” are mostly scantily-clad women. Don’t get me wrong here, I like half-naked ladies as much as the next guy; but it’s so overwhelming that it’s just no fun anymore. Deleting as soon as I post this review.

Love the content, HATE the app. I have been a follower of the Chive for years now. But the app has become unusable. Either it freezes and I have to shut the app down and restart it (this has been happening for at least 6 months) or I get pop up adds for the App Store (this has been happening for around a month or two). The last post I tried to read sent me to the App Store over FIFTEEN times!!! In one single post!!! I couldn’t even make it through the post!! After years of having the app on my phones I am going to have to delete it. I got so frustrated with the App Store pop ups in the last post that I threw my phone against the wall because they wouldn’t stop. Stupid move and completely my fault (thankfully my phone is ok) but why subject myself to that frustration. I hope they fix it because I really enjoy the content.

The best of times, the worst of times. The Chive is one of my favorite places to go for both entertainment and heart warming stories. It is one of the best places to go for a distraction. However, recently the app has changed, and not for the better. The ads play at odd times and some don’t have the ability to be skipped. Further, the app drains the battery at an alarming pace. From full battery to under 20% takes about an hour with only the Chive app active on the phone. I’m not sure why there is such a draw on battery power, but that was the straw that broke the camels back. The content of the app is amazing and perhaps the pay app for The Chive has none of these issues, however, the price they are asking is far too steep. I will miss The Chive, but the monitory price, patience for out of control ads and battery life price is enough for me to bid farewell to The Chive app.

No originality anymore. I’m a long time Chiver(6 years-ish) and realizing this app & website aren’t the same anymore. Let’s talk about the app first, it’s horribly buggy, turns off music every time you open the app that’s even if you’re switching between apps as well, won’t load all the photos for certain articles(which half the time that’s all their content), and the adds they run can kill the whole app over and over again. Let’s talk content, more than half of the content they have on their website will be taken from Reddit from the previous day. So if you also frequently use Reddit, you will are the same content over and over again. Yeah so if you pay for the subscription to their website/app you will essentially be paying for see Reddit and to have your app work properly since their adds kill their the app in your phone anyway. I originally joined theChive for meetups, and the overall culture for the “KCCO” aspect of it. They not have forfeited all of that, and have tainted their brand by stealing content, and pretty much paying to have a working application on their phone. It was a slow process for me to dislike theChive but I will no longer be viewing any of “their” content anymore.

Used to be great. While I understand the need for ad revenue to support staff, this app has gotten way out of hand. I have looked at the chive for years now, but today I have decided I am done with the app. It cuts off my music while listening no matter what immediately upon opening the app. The ads are so intrusive I cannot even use it while not listening to music. Today I had to swipe out of the app because I couldn't even view a post because it kept switching to an ad on Safari that was not even there. This is the only app that makes me feel I will get a virus on iOS. It haven't been able to make it through an entire post in months but stayed assuming this issue would be rectified. I now can't even read an entire paragraph of text without interruption and 9/10 times I have to force close. It was fun fellow Chivers, but consider me a an ex.

Changed since they began offering memberships. Long time Chiver here. Love the posts and all the good the organization does but it seems that ever since they began offering an ad free membership, the ads got crazy. Most of the ads I get now crash the app, open the App Store or open a window with some scam contest with no way of returning to the app without closing everything. I’ve done all of the updates both for the app and my phone and there’s been no improvement, it’s actually gotten worse. This is the only app I have the issue with and it’s become so frustrating that I’ve decided to just delete the app. I understand that ads are a part dealing with apps, but ads that crash a site or that you’re unable to close are far too frustrating. For as many posts that John has written regarding the greed of Facebook, I find the abundance of ads on his own app ironic to say the least.

More and more racist undertones. I used to be a fan but over the last year I’ve noticed more and more racist undertones in several of the posts. Maybe you can get away with one or two oops I didn’t realize, but when you are regularly posting memes with Pepe the Frog it really makes me question where you are looking for your content. Even if the meme you are posting with him isn’t racist, he is deemed a hate symbol so by association it raises questions. Then there is the turned ok symbol that just keeps popping up, for instance just today it was featured in a meme stating “what’s up with my girlfriends hand?”...it also happened to be the 11th photo in the feed. Coincidence? Maybe you think I’m reading too far into it but that’s exactly how white supremacy works, in codes like this. Chive claims to be non political and non racist but yet they consistently “overlook” these obvious associations?

Miles of smiles !. After my operations and hospital time and in house therapy this year I have a lot of alone time . The thing that never leaves me is my pain , it is always there . The nights can be long and lonely . The other thing that never leaves me is the CHIVE . You are always there to make me laugh and put a smile on my face . Some of your stories can make me cry and I question my own fight but I am lucky to have my wife who fights harder than I know how . We love theCHIVE and the conversations it starts between us ! Ads help keep my screen time down. Thanks! Not to far back, I used to spend hours on The Chive which led to many sleepless nights. Now that there is a LONG add in between each post, I have a good stopping point and only see one post at a time. (choose wisely) Hard close the app (otherwise it picks right back up on the ad) and come back the next day. I hope they have analytics that show them how many people do the same. Not worth paying for, the only original content is Chive merchandise ads. Still worth looking at (one post at a time) because they do organize other people’s content on their website into a nice format. Yeah, sometimes photo #4 is also #22 AND #43 on the same post (blows my mind how this happens at all, let alone so often) and maybe they lost the spellcheck feature on outlook but this all just helps me not feel bad for paying them $5 per month for toilet entertainment. Thanks again Chive!

STOP THE POPUPS AND FREEZES. As a loyal Chiver who has purchased merchandise contributed to fundraising and generally been very happy with the app over the years I have come to the point where I have to comment on the excess of pop up ads and freezing of the app. If this doesn’t improve I will have to delete the app. I still wish to remain a member of theCHIVE community but I won’t be visiting the site any longer. Please consider the direction you’re taking the community in. If the chive needs funding for itself just ask where here and I know the community would be more than willing to contribute significantly to a cause.

Ruined what made theChive great.. One of the best and most defining qualities about theChive, next to the charitable cause, was that it felt like a unique, non-corporate place to go. Not anymore. The ads are killing you. I realize it pulls in money, but it’s chipping away at your fan base.... and really what is theChive without its fan base?! When you can’t even use the app without closing and restarting it a few times, then it’s garbage. Irony about it all is the ads don’t work!!!! I bet most people are like me and close the app before the product is even pitched, or just avoid the videos all together now. Effectively, all the aggressive ads do is drive people away. Cut some ads, or stop being so aggressive about it all or I’m willing to bet this is the beginning of the end for theChive. It’ll eventually just become a mediocre site/app if you keep at it. Sad to see it go....

Used to be great, now just ok. I’ve been using this apps for a couple years now on multiple phones. I really like that the chive app has great content that’s updated daily. However, the performance of this app on my last 2 phones has been subpar at best. I am currently using the iPhone 8 and I have to constantly reload the app due to constant freezing. Sometimes ads will pop up and I cannot close them out without closing the app completely. On top of these issues, this app drains my battery like none other. I understand that video and gifs will drain your battery but I use other apps with much more demanding graphics and video without any issue. This app could easily get 5 Stars from me if they only fixed the performance of it.

Great content, lousy app function. Problems with the app keep me from rating 5 stars. It’s a shame that such a great amount of content is locked behind an app that barely functions. Mine crashes every time I view 2 or 3 posts. EVERY. TIME. It also shuts off my music app even if Chive’s app isn’t playing any sound or video, so when I’m listening to music and I want to surf Chive for something interesting, I can’t play music while I’m surfing it. Some posts have frozen my phone completely to the point I had to force the phone to shut down, while other times it just forces me to restart the Chive app. Then it’ll work for a short while. I often get bored fighting the app and just do something else. CHIVE PEOPLE: FIRE YOUR DEVELOPER AND HIRE A REAL PROGRAMMER! Your app is still broken, hard, as of April 2018.

Love the chive hate the app.. So let’s start with the fact my battery drains 10% in like 10-15 minutes with using the app just ok normal everyday photos. It actually get my phone HOT like physically HOT just displaying pictures I don’t get it. Next the ads some of them are fine and just show up through the post. But occasionally I get some at the bottom that go crazy and take over the screen. And other times I get some that I can’t even see but it shows a little swirling progress bar. And if I happen to tap the screen it takes me to some ad or something. My last and final complaint is this. When I occasionally want to save a photo I hold my finger on the picture. It says save photo. Ok great. Then the other like 30% of the time it will say I can save the link or take me to the actual browser page where I now have to scroll through again and find the photo to save it. My final thoughts are that the site runs better, smoother, cleaner through my mobile browser than it does through the app itself. The whole point of an app is to have a better overall experience. Idk who is making your app or working on it but for being around sooo long it needs to be fixed big time!

Better for now. I love the Chive, but gawd... This poor app crashes so friggin’ much. It freezes and is slow to respond at times. Other times it takes FOREVER for stuff to load. Sometimes I’ll get a random blast of volume from an ad or something, but it lasts just a second. Or I’ll get stuck in an never ending ad loop where I repeatedly get redirected to the App Store until I close out the app and start over again. Earlier today it caused my phone to completely lock up for a couple of minutes. I couldn’t even hard reset it. The craziest thing is that it has actually improved. It’s functioning much better than it was a few months ago, but it’s still really bad. This poor app. I am sad for it. I hope someone does something to make it better, so I can enjoy it instead of getting frustrated and giving up on it.

Please fix. Let me start off by saying I love theChive and what they represent. They do great charity work and do have great content. I just can’t stand the updated versions of the app. Too many ads and it freezes up a lot. I mean a lot. I can’t even get through two posts without it freezing up. I know companies need to make money and I’m sure they put their money to good use to help the less fortunate. Which is what being an American is all about. But you got to fix this. I use to use this app anytime I got a chance. Now it’s not even launched in weeks. I check back to see if there are any updates, but no dice! I really hope this app gets fixed. That is all.

Greedy Company!. This app is generally a fun and distracting “pick-me-up” with humor, positivity, current events, light education/insightfulness, and sexuality (nothing pornographic), but the company is greedy and ignores its fans/customers/supporters by experimenting with ads. Since its release, they gradually added ads including large banners at the bottom that cannot be disabled, random full-screen popups that can be closed immediately, and now, despite the fact that this would obviously (and did) anger supporters, timed commercials (videos) that cannot be closed. I would happily pay to remove ads, but the Chive only offers a pricey subscription. Sorry, guys, your “service” isn’t that good, special, unique, or valuable! I expect the Chive to listen to complaints (again) and remove these annoying ads/commercials (again). I’ll probably reinstall the ap and enjoy it for a few more months before this stupid company adds annoying ads (again)... They need to offer an ad-free option for $4.99 (total cost; 1-time payment) and end the cycle! The ap also crashes often (probably due to the ads) and the animated GIFs are buggy (loading/playing is hit or miss). UPDATE They now require a login. I deleted it. I may revisit the Chive in a year or so (again).

Awesome site.... terrible app. There are good days and bad days with the app experience. But mostly a frustration I’ve almost come to expect every I click on that green C . There is quite a bit of freezing and crashing going on . Some days you just can’t seem to get the pics or gifs to load. It’s like being on a 4 lane free way to happy town but just as you round the bend, there’s 4 semis side by side in the worlds worst drag race . A blood boiling rolling roadblock . The technology is out there, get it fixed. And on a side note that is personally my biggest complaint about the chive app is that if I’m listening to music and open the chive app, it shuts the music off. Like I understand if I clicked on a video but not when I scroll through the main screen or a picture gallery.

Love the organization, app needs major work. I must agree with the last review I’ve read. The chive is one of my favorite down time past times over the past several years, but now the app is almost virus like. Adds stream like it’s no problem though the app however content will take minutes to load if it even will load. It’s not uncommon for me to have to shut down the app and restart it several times because it’s froze or sometime it just shuts its self down. It’s really frustrating often. I understand that the functioning of the app is probably one of the lower items on the priority list with all the other great and more important things they’re doing just didn’t know if it was known that it acts like that and I just wanted to inform in case there were ways to fix that. Other than that though keep up the awesome work y’all keep doing and have a great day

Beware of privacy - Steals from clipboard. I casually visit this app and I been going to the website for the past 8 years. Today I just noticed that every time I open the app, the app request the copied item from the clipboard. IOS 14 featured a great new feature which warns when something is copied or pasted. I get the following notification when I open the app now “theCHIVE pasted from ...”, which is essentially stealing anything you last copied (this could be passwords, credit card info, anything confidential, etc.). Try it out for yourself, if you don’t believe me. How dishonest, unethical and despicable do you have to be to steal info from your user base without any consent. I can provide proof, if requested. I’ll be deleting this app today. Bye Chive. I guess if you don’t pay for a product, you are the product.

Content is Amazing, App is not. I’m going to sound like some of the other reviews on here. I love the chive, I have a green KCCO original, along with four other shirts, a bathing suit, and a man card bottle opener. I love everything about the website and the content and the Philanthropy they do. But the app is really bad. It doesn’t matter WiFi or 4G not one thread has ever fully loaded. Most of the time only the first picture loads and the rest won’t, but the ads do. Speaking of my phone literally gets randomly sent to the internet for ads I don’t click on and won’t let me back on the chive app because it keeps reloading the internet ad even when I click done. It also asks me every five seconds if I will open pandora. I’m only writing the review because I do love the content so much that it actually frustrates me to not have the ability to see it. Please fix it guys and girls. KCCO!

Keep Calm Commodity On.... I’ve enjoyed everything about The Chive, and the amazing things the charity side does for so many outstanding people. But apparently the fact that we buy $30 shirts, blow the roof off of fundraising goals consistently 1 small donation at a time, and log onto their app regularly isn’t enough. Instead of a thank you we get bombarded with ads, galleries that lock up, a 25% increase on purchases to get free shipping, and a monthly fee to enjoy the app we used to enjoy opening?!? What once was an amazing group of misfits set on making this world a better place one small donation at a time has fallen to the almighty dollar. Maybe it’s the payments on the $4 million headquarters that got another $3 million in renovations that made them do it. I loved being part of a unique community, and now I feel like a commodity, and after scrolling the reviews I can see I’m not the only one feeling this way... I’d give a zero star if I could. #MistakesWereMade ✌🏼

Unfortunately unusable. I have never left a review for anything... I love the chive and have been a loyal chicer for 5 years. I cannot use this app at all in the last 2 weeks. Before I have the chance to get halfway through a gallery, the app not only spams ads, which we all understand have their place, now the app sends me to the App Store. I didn’t think that would be such a big deal until they have made it impossible to get past this ad tactic. I get sent to the App Store, click the back to chive button (top left) and literally am immediately sent back to the App Store. Not once, or twice, but never ending. As a joke I decided to see how many times I would be instantly sent back. I stopped at 50. I have restarted the app to see if it was a bug but alas, it never changes. You have ruined this app, a sad day I uninstall and leave this community I loved.

Sad to delete but it’s time. I’ve been on the chive since pretty much the beginning when it was just content taken from other sites. I’ve bought merch, gave to their charities and actively participated in events. Over the years it grew into a great community and product, however the app and website have taken a nosedive in the past few years. The app crashes as soon as you think you’ve gotten through one mediocre post without being bombarded with ads that just randomly pop up. The videos work about 25% of the time, usually I just have to close the app because it freezes during the ad and I just have to go elsewhere if I really want to see the content promised. They seriously need to invest in some people who know how to develop functioning apps, as of now it feels like it may have been designed by a few monkeys banging on keyboards. I’m sad to delete this app but the company clearly sees us as commodities and not part of the community.

Side scrolling lacks content. Some months back after an update, many of the galleries no longer show the written content under the images when you’re in a side scrolling set up. This is especially frustrating when you’re in the middle of a story and it suddenly ends but the images go on. So switch to the vertical scrolling you say? Great idea except for when you scroll vertically the images are usually too big to fit on the screen all at one time and almost always the written content doesn’t fit on the same screen as the image. Makes it too much work to be scrolling up and down to look at the image then look at the text then look back at the image again. I love the content but you don’t make it easy sometimes.

Wash, rinse, repeat review. The app, as well as the website, has gone to hell in a handbasket. I guess the temptation for riches grabbed ahold. The ads are out of control. While most companies charge a couple of bucks (one time) to go ad-free, they decided the best way to thank the faithful is to charge $60 a year. The ads will lock up your phone over and over and over again. They’ve also completely given up on originality or editing their site. Posts are filled with grammatical and spelling errors and each gallery usually has duplicated pictures. You can easily find the same pictures on other sites like Reddit which has apparently become their go-to source for material. Edit: Literally had 5 ads within 5 seconds that were redirects to the App Store. Click off ad...back to the App Store. Click off ad...back to the App Store. Should I keep going?

Enough is enough.... Thank you for all the great content but... it’s a real bummer that there are less galleries filled with funny and heart warming stories and pics and more blatant ads. On top of that, the newer versions of this app aren’t loading correctly and in some galleries the pics aren’t displayed at all. Is the strategy to drown the user in advertising then ask for $5 a month to get rid of it? Seems kinda dishonest and underhanded. I’ve bought merch and contributed to the great causes you’ve brought to my attention. I love The Chive. I just seems that lately you are becoming so focused on making money, all the other stuff that made The Chive great are falling by the wayside. Get it together guys/gals. I know people on your own staff are voicing these same opinions. Listen to them. One last thing... PLEASE SPELLCHECK YOUR CONTENT!!! Growth. I have personally been with the chive now for 13 years. I have bought merchandise, I have donated to Chive Charities, I even attended multiple Chive meet ups, one particularly they attended. They were great people just as they are in the app. However, the app is just a phone killer anymore. It crashes and heats up your phone if you spend a little to much time on the app which ultimately swells the battery. The mobile website is a mess too. Constant page refreshes that bring you back to the top of the page regardless of where you are, and I have to say. It’s basically like ad photo ad photo ad photo pop up ad photo. I loved this company. It’s gotten me through countless sleepless nights with my children when they were babies. But I’m just findin it harder and harder to support them as I’m frustrated when I try to consume they’re content

App needs help. First and foremost the one star I gave is for the app ONLY! The Chive, the employees, what they stand for, the people they help, the parties they throw and all the good they do get 10 stars out of 5!!!!! That said, I just thought it was my apple devices acting up when I go on the chive app. Having read other reviews now I know it’s not just me. The app destroys my batteries on both my iPads and I phone. My devices actually heat up! The app freezes up every time I go on after looking at a couple galleries so I have to choose the ones I want to see most and hope they doesn’t crash. I hope you can get this fixed. I love the chive but hate the app!

Used to be great. I really used to love TheChive. Funny galleries, great stories of helping people, general knowledge posts that I found interesting, etc etc. One of my favorite galleries was “Game On!”. Sadly about 2 months ago a lot of the galleries started blacking out. I couldn’t see anything except black squares. If I clicked thumbnail mode they all showed up. But clicking on a picture blacked everything out. I reached out to TheChive with a picture and was told that it was an ad issue. So since then there’s been a couple of updates I believe. Still having the same issue. I used to agree that this was the “greatest app in the world”. But it seems like now they don’t care if you can’t use their app if you aren’t paying for the ad-free experience. I’ll update this review and the stars if they ever fix it. Until then, I’ll be sticking with iFunny and Reddit.

Size of app. Love thechive. Defiantly 5 star site . I have Been following for years. I have had the app for a long time as well but got rid of it and went back to using it in browser. I couldn’t believe that the app took over 1.6 gb of space on my phone, which is a lot for what what it is. (iTunes Store Claims it is much smaller) Also the app is very glitchy and full of pop up ads. I could hardly get through a segment without it freezing my phone or restarting the app. In my case, using it in browser is the way to go. Zero difference in quality of content compared to using the site.

App issues. I’ve always enjoyed the app since I discovered theCHIVE several years ago. But the last couple updates have detracted from my experience. The most recent update only gives me 2 lines of any caption associated with a picture, so I don’t get most of the information shared. It also added the Daily Dopamine Dump, but none of those galleries have loaded for me. In the previous update, I lost the captions/descriptions for galleries along the lines of “what is this thing” or ones that are lists of the greatest/best/etc; I can see the pictures, but if I don’t recognize the people, I don’t know what it is. I will continue to use the app, but wanted to make sure my concerns are heard and wonder if I’m the only one having thins experience. I’ll gladly change my review once/if everything is addressed

Some glitches with new app. I love the chive and the new app. A few things need fixing that I’ve noticed. Visiting a gallery doesn’t gray out the gallery so now it doesn’t make the user aware what gallery they’ve visited already. Also when there are captions only two lines are visible to read leaving the user on the edge of the seat especially about the creepy facts. Also this has been happening for a while on older app and newer one still, GIFs play ridiculously fast and some images will automatically skip to the next image when swiping between photos. Other than that the new layout though familiar has had a nice refreshing update. Keep up the good work. Chive On! The 3 star is just for attention for the possibility of seeing their post by the developer.

Absolutely Unusable - TIME TO GIVE UP THE “BEST APP IN THE WORLD” Moniker. Update 7/23: DOES ANYONE AT THE CHIVE EVEN READ THESE REVIEWS? THIS APP CONTINUES TO GO FROM BAD TO WORSE. READ THE REVIEWS FROM YOUR LOYAL FOLLOWERS (OR YOU VERY QUICKLY WON’T HAVE ANY FOLLOWERS)!! Original post: This app used to be a great way to kill a little downtime. It has become nearly completely unusable. You cannot browse any gallery for more than a few minutes until the app slows to a crawl and quickly stops responding altogether. And then it usually just crashes closed. I have used it for years; currently accessing it from both an iPhone 13 Pro and iPad 4 Mini. Both versions of the app are horribly unstable. I’m no programmer, but I’d say this seemingly simple app needs to be COMPLETELY rewritten. Slapping occasional “bug fixes and performance improvements” on its crumbling facade do absolutely nothing to improve it.

Used to be awesome. The app is slow and doesn’t work properly anymore. Too many pop-ups and ads. Take so long to load pics or videos I typically close the app. I do keep coming back hoping something has changed, because the content is awesome. BTW. I hope someone at chive is reading this. On the “go ahead and take my money”, you guys recommended some t-shirts purported to be semi-tailored high quality T-shirt’s. Man, those were junk, worse than Hanes I threw them away because they shrank so bad so I don’t remember the name brand. Bottom line, they were junk and you shouldn’t have recommended them. I actually thought you tested the products before putting them on your website. Still love you though ......,,,

Freezes, crashes, kills battery. I don’t really mind the ads. If they want to have ads to keep things free, great. Bring on the ads. But the ad service they are using is bug-ridden and probably full of malware. The ads constantly cause the app to freeze or crash. The app itself absolutely kills my battery. I once opened the app and just let it sit at the main screen, and I watched my battery life tick down one percent at a time (while my phone started to get warm). Leaving the app open for 5 minutes (while not doing anything) drained my full battery by 15%. I suspect this might be due to the ads running furiously in the background (doing what, I don’t know...mining bitcoins?). The mobile version of the website isn’t much better. The ads there often redirect the page to the AppStore or hijack it entirely and send me to a page I can’t back out of. Please, for the love of God, fix the app and get a new ad service!
