App Doesn’t Recognize Subscription Info. I have a three year subscription but can’t login to my iPad. I can access via my browser but not via my iPad. Frustrating!

Misguided Approach. As a loyal subscriber to Esquire since 1982, I am extremely disappointed by the subscription model that you have adopted. Many other magazines, including Time, GQ, and Sports Illustrated, allow their print customers to access their iPad versions for free. I will not participate in this misguided approach. To make matters worse, Esquire has completely destroyed what was once a nice iPad magazine app. Now that you have “improved” the iPad app, I cannot even view the content for which I have paid! I called this morning to cancel my digital subscription. However, with this level of incompetence by Esquire, I am not certain.

Great Magazine!! Awful download issues...... I would give this a full star rating but while purchasing and downloading I had way to many issues with crashing so I decided to delete and reinstall where I ended repurchasing a years subscription....... And now am waiting to be refunded by Apple who seams to be very slow on giving me feed back as to weather or not I will be receiving said refund...... That aside this has to be one of the BEST magazines in the App Store today, it provides you with the same articles you'd expect to find but also sneaks in some sophistication by adding videos and music to almost every article, giving it the true essence of what a great digital magazine should be. Now I just have to wait for my refund so I can go ahead and spend it again on something else's in this App Store..... Why not just have an immediate refund via store credit available.... COME ON APPLE!!! I know your busy with stock market sales rising but I'm your loyal customer and fan boy here don't I deserve some help?

Sad. I have been unable for 9 months to see the magazine yet my subscription is fully paid . Written to HelpDesk no luck, do something already

MAZ is awful. This was a 5 star app before MAZ took over. The new all doesn’t work properly, is buggy and doesn’t have the same ease of use as the previous app. Perviously, the digital subscription was free with my monthly magazine subscription and it also came with the black book for free as well. And on top of all that it worked great. Esquire has really dropped the ball with this one. MAZ is garbage, they need to drop them and go back to how it was.

Deceptive charges. Hearst Publications charged me $42 when I didn’t agree to it. They have several complainants for bad business practices

Lately too woke. Used to enjoy it a lot more when it talked about being a man than a social justice warrior

Horrendous. Embarrassing. What used to be a terrific immersive experience that defined how a magazine can be brought to life has now been dumbed down to the extreme. If you are thinking of going digital for Esquire, don’t do it. The app does not work. And when it does do something other than show you the cover, you are barraged by ads. I don’t know who made the decision to make this incredibly stupid change. Cancelling my subscription.

Pathetic. I bought a back issue that I know I had previously bought only to find I couldn’t access it even after paying $6.99. Unbelievable business model. Shame.

Why can’t all Esquire content be read on the app?. I get at least a daily blast from Esquire with a lot of great articles- I need to sign in each time - why not have all of these articles in the app? Or have the link in the email open the app?

Unbelievably poor app experience. The app experience is so poor, it makes it impossible to enjoy the magazine. This app used to be great, now it’s unintuitive.

Esquire does not acknowledge digital subscribers as customers. Before you hit that buy button BEWARE. If you purchase a HEARST digital subscription and have an issue, despite the support link listed above, Hearst gives ZERO support to digital subscribers. They have no way of looking up your account, there is no digital media department to speak to, there is no way for them to troubleshoot an issue with your subscription. I am not talking about technical issues. They offer NO support for their digital subscribers WHATSOEVER. After speaking to 6 Hearst reps, 2 which were supervisors they admit they have no ability to address any issues. The last rep I spoke with also says that when you subscribe it is not a subscription to your iTunes Store account but is a subscription to one specific device. So…say you buy a new iPad or have to get a replacement…how do you view your subscription? You can't. If what he says is true how do you transfer your subscription to the new device…they don't know. They just submit a complaint. I really felt Esquire was the best digital magazine on the iTunes Store. It definitely is the best designed one. But it is ineptitude like this that will prevent me from ever purchasing any Hearst digital subscription in the future.

What have you done?. I renewed my digital subscription after about a year-long break. I was sorry to find the once feature-rich and engaging digital editions had been tossed aside and replaced with soulless page scans. I can’t even revisit my old issues in the format I loved and remembered. Instead, they too have been stripped bare. What remains is lifeless. Stay away or stick to print. It’s not worth the dollar to have both.

iPad app doesn’t work properly. Can’t switch between articles in March 2018 issue, please fix the app!!!

Reviewers could use this App as a battery test. Seriously, why does reading this app turn my iPad into a space heater and chew through battery like a coked up beaver I’m a lumberyard? The magazine is great but the app experience is horrendous. At this rate I likely won’t renew because if this is the quality of the product they are happy with… not great bob,

iPod mini issues. Once again content is not loading on iPod mini

Updated Review May 2020. They’re no longer monthly, and you should avoid any subscription powered by Maz. After canceling, I lost access to my issues during my subscribed period. Esquire used to be great. Original review: Looks like they simply skipped the Big Black Book for Spring, and I keep getting monthly charges even though they’re combining multiple months into seasonal issues. Great content when it’s there, but lately they’re a no show.

Horrible download experience. This is the only app that doesn’t work well of all of the men,s mags. Glitchy and slow. Freezes all the time, even after reinstalling several times, every time.

TERRIBLE. The worse paid subscription apps I have experienced. Maz seems not to get that there is a problem. The publisher seems not to care if the customer receives what is paid for.

Great writing.. I think it’s like the best.

Iphone x support pls!!!. Dear developers, please add iphone x support to your otherwise excellent iphone app! On a different note: the news section seems cumbersome and not intuitive in its current form, perhaps you could show as a list with smaller icons?! Anyway, good luck with the developement!

Once the gold standard of digital media. A plead for the Esquire of old.. Once, Esquire Magazine was the pioneer of digital media. Their digital magazine was a thing of beauty and a delight to read. Images sprang to life, text was searchable and interactive and consumption of the text and inserted media was fluid and wonderful. What a great experience it once was. Recently, Esquire has chosen to abandon it's excellence in digital media for the no better published PDF "app", Maz. The so called magazine platform does nothing more than publish an image of the magazine page. No more interactive text. No more flowing articles. Just crappy, unscaled images that do nothing but open hyperlinks to ads. You're better off purchasing the paper copy. From a long time Esquire reader who found joy in Esquire's transition to digital and pursuit to be better than the other publications.... Be better than the PDF.

Terrible update. I was an app subscriber until 2015 and loved how interactive the app was, now than I returned, all I see is a pdf reader which doesn’t even works well, I mean, trying to look one page full screen is a pain in the ...there aren’t videos, no gifs, no sound, justa a plain pdf reader, is just boring.

Rip off. I subscribed for the digital service a month ago and have yet to be able to access anything of value in the app or online. All I seem to be able to get is five minutes of access to the latest issue DESPITE PAYING FOR A DIGITAL SUBSCRIPTION! Their customer service is nonexistent. DO NOT BUY.

Love the magazine, hate the app. This app is insanely buggy, even though they seem to always be changing it, it seems to never get fixed.

Infuriating beyond belief.. Tell me, Hearst, why I just spent any money at all on a subscription to your digital edition (thinking it was time to try this publication more regularly after a few pleasantly-experienced issues bought from newsstands) when your app won't download the d**n issues?! This clearly isn't isolated given the number of poor reviews (I made the mistake of assuming a reputable publisher would have a solid app to use and didn't vet with reviews first, an error I will not be repeating). I already subscribe to PopSci, WSJ, Economist, and a few others digitally and have been wowed by the experience, you have clearly dropped the ball on getting this right, I'd take PDF scans of your print version over not getting my purchased content at all! This left a poor taste in my mouth I won't soon forget (read: I refuse to purchase another issue of any or your publications). I suggest fixing this before it becomes a permanent reputation among other newcomers like myself.

Awful outdated app. Doesn’t really do anything but deliver the e version of the print copy. What a waste!

Good read. Late for work!!

Great content but news and politics are not included in full digital content subscription?. Great content and enjoy the daily fresh content on the digital app with the subscription. I was disappointed to find that without warning I am asked to pay more for the news and politics stories. Feels like being nickeled and dimed after already paying for full digital content. Please address this feature. Otherwise well worth the subscription.

Excelente. This is a real gentleman magazine

Cant login to the app. This is a piece of junk. No wonder legacy media is dying.

Classic. This is a magazine that lost its way and no way it’s worth the subscription. Anything before the year 2000 is fantastic anything afterwards don’t even read. where are the archives?

Does. Not. Work.. Look, we can all understand glitches. We deal with them on a daily basis and, when it comes to technology, we even expect them. We'll put up with something not working the way it's supposed to as the creators work out the kinks. We'll even pay money for a product we know isn't at what it should be because it's developed by a company we think knows what it's doing. Microsoft had Vista. Apple has Lion OSX. This stuff happens. But when a company releases an app that is essentially an e-reader, which was perfected long before the iPad or Kindles came along, and that app can't even function (literally will not open or download any issues that you just paid for) and hasn't been able to for MONTHS with no sign whatsoever that Esquire is even trying to make it work… well… that's when you know a company just doesn't care, plain and simple. Digital subscriptions are the future and Esquire is a world-renowned magazine. Get it right because we're all tired of waiting.

Mobile Device Readability Settings Recommendation. Room for enhanced mobile device content accessibility by way of text-font size, background tone adjustment settings for readers. To improve content browsing experience, reduce visual fatigue (battery life of screen) from white background only settings. (Times New Roman, Georgia font, black background suggestion, 10-12 pt font like on Kindle app).

Missing features, poor page layout, unrefined. Previous experience was much better. This app is functional at best. The simple fact that full bleed pages can’t be viewed full screen is sloppy. The app feels like a simple PDF reader with limited additional functions. Media isn’t integrated in an interesting way. It isn’t fun to use and has no draw to keep you returning. I’m disappointed every time I open it - which is rarely anymore.

Horrific. Poor design, awful UX, buggy, unable to use. App is awful. No response to multiple outreach. RIP Esquire.

Think I made a mistake. I joined so that I could read Charles Pierce online. Have been trying for an hour now just to figure it out and still haven’t been able to get access to Charles Pierce articles. Although they want to send me some newsletter that is just going to clutter up my inbox. Never have this problem with The New Yorker, so it is really shocking to see something this bad.

Impossible to login. Something wrong with login.

App has ceased functioning. Esquire used to be a great app. The change in tech a couple of years ago made the reader experience much worse and now it has ceased to function. Download not working and even home page images won’t load. Total garbage

No warning & no way to turn off "progressive downloading". I've always liked Esquire and was ecstatic when they made the jump to iPad. I think they take good advantage of the digital capabilities available to them. But this update introduces "progressive downloading" with no apparent way of forcing the entire issue to download at once, so imagine my surprise when I took my iPad to lunch expecting to be able to read Esquire, but I was only able to read the first few articles because you need a constant Internet connection to download more content out of each issue as you go along, and the place I was eating at didn't have WiFi. While I can bear not being able to access certain additional article features because I don't have an active Internet connection at the time of reading (embedded videos, for example), I shouldn't be penalized for not being able to access the Internet and I shouldn't be denied content. At least give me the option to download the whole issue at once for offline viewing if I want, especially if I know I'm heading into a situation where I won't have WiFi access and want to spend time reading, like a plane flight or something.

Barely works. App barely works.

Fundamentally broken. Can’t turn pages, can’t view full screen, back button shows table of contents unexpectedly but fails to work. Terrible.

Great magazine. HORRIBLE APP!!!!!!!. This is an awesome magazine, but Hearst (the people who own the app) are about the worst people to deal with ever. The app NEVER works and you have to contact them, in which they give you NO SOLUTION or HELP. They need to be banned due to their lack of caring about their apps. On top of the fact the developer is impossible to contact, iTunes, when I contacted them regarding the developers lack of cooperation on purchased magazines being non-viewable, responded with "Please contact the developer before contacting iTunes." Upon responding to the not to smart iTunes employee a senior advisor had nothing to help me, so bottom line; do NOT purchase any magazine from this developer and proceed with your own risk when purchasing any app or content not directly put out by apple as they do not care so long as your money is with them. The only way to get it back is by wasting 3 hours combined throughout multiple days via emailing the developer back and forth and then emailing the "intelligent" people at the iTunes Store....

Good. UI could be a bit better

What happened to the Esquire App?. This new update is beyond terrible. The appeal of the app was that it gave you a better experience than holding the actual magazine in your hands. I have been a loyal subscriber for many years going from receiving Esquire in the mail to now my IPad. It was great to download the magazine and to be able from the opening cover to see said cover come alive. Now with the April edition the app has taken many steps back. The Big Black Book Spring/Summer 2015 keeps shutting down the app. This app has gone from one of the best magazine apps to one of the worst. It has seriously made me reconsider my subscription.

Huge DOWNGRADE From a Formerly Great App. What a huge disappointment! I used to go to the old app daily. I also subscribe to the magazine. This new app is so bad and so utterly useless... I will un-install it. I’m so disappointed I may cancel the magazine subscription as well. Whoever came up with the strategy behind this new approach for the app should be fired.

FIX THIS ESQUIRE!!. Is this app working for anyone? Is Esquire paying any attention? The app has stopped working for me completely. Issues will not download at all. App freezes and crashes. No updates or bug fixes. No customer support. Worst men’s magazine app I’ve seen. Do not subscribe to this digital disaster.

Has anyone at Esquire heard of Apple?. Shockingly terrible app. Clearly designed by people who still use flip phones.

Esquire not honoring years of purchases. Paid for years of subscriptions, got a new device, contacted Esquire many many times to restore purchases and they will not honor past edition purchases.

Because Zero Stars Is Not An Option. DO NOT subscribe through this app. Like every one of the Maz apps it is filled with bugs and will take you forever to actually access an issue or issues you’ve purchased. Piece of 💩

Bad resolution. Have had no problems with "bugginess" with this update, though have had to sign out/back in to reload if make any changes/upgrades ; takes time. My biggest issue is resolution (really noticeable since I got the new iPad, but bad even before); The Economist has this sorted out; try that app and see the difference. Hearst & CondeNaste still have to upgrade their product to have the text (photos and videos are great) clearer. Its soooo blurry.

Terrible app. Don't buy this app!! It doesn't import previously purchased issues from the old app, which did not move over into newsstand. So I broke down and purchased a one year subscription for $20. Then that hung up and wouldn't download issues into Newsstand. So, as the FAQ advises, I deleted the app and reinstalled it. Now it doesn't recognise that I even have a subscription, and wants me to purchase another subscription or purchase individual issues! This is the buggiest, worst app ever! Andcthey don't amswer mail sent to customer service or offer any fix.

App Won't Recognize iTunes Subscription. App Won't Recognize iTunes Subscription!

Crashes. Have been waiting for a fix after updating the software which has resulted in not being able to open the app at all without it crashing. Agree with the other comments fix ASAP or refund the subscribers money.

Does not work!. I downloaded the app and bought a 12 month subscription... Most of the time the app says does not recognize me as being a subscriber AND I have NOT been able to download a magazine!!! I even try resetting my iPad as instructed. I have been using the Popsci app that works FLAWLESSLY.

Complete disaster. I had a subscription and this app years ago and it worked well. Now it’s “powered by Maz” or whatever and it’s a complete total disaster. I have 2 iPads and it behaves the same on both. Constantly crashes, like constantly. You can’t get more than a few pages through without a crash (whether in text or PDF mode). If you switch over to another app and come back, it crashes of course. The navigation is brutally ugly and stupid. He app from years ago had actual navigation features and more interactivity and you could move through pages way better. Not that the lack of features and polish matters compared to the fact that it CONSTANTLY CRASHES. What a crazy stare of affairs when 5 years of software/technology improvements happens and you get a far far worse experience just trying to read a magazine on a tablet. Will be asking for a subscription refund for sure.

Don't buy until fixed!. The update does nothing. The magazines don't download. Esquire should try testing their apps before offering them to the public. DO NOT BUY!

Terrible App. A total ripoff for print subscribers. Your competitors support their core customer base, and you instead choose to alienate them.

Auto subscribe SCAM. The only way to avoid the auto-renew subscription is to phone the magazine. The instructions on their website and internal iPad app are incorrect. You will be charged even though you performed the iPad unsubscribe instructions. This is very misleading and the publisher has refused to provide a refund.

Buggy, still. The content and added multimedia are wonderful ... when it works. I've gone through more than a couple app upgrade versions ... Still download issues, covers that don't show up in library, crashes and lags in startup, deletes and redownloads to get things working. Esquire editors, writers and artists who clearly have a passion for excellent journalism are being woefully let down by their tech developers. Save the app aggro, buy a print sub if you care.

No need for this app. I don't understand what happened. I used to download issues with no problems up until April when this app was introduced and now the issues will not download. Please fix this app or go back to the previous method of distribution!

Good. Some good free issues, not sure if I would pay full price for the issues though. I had a number of issued download and when I downloaded the current issue they all disappeared and I have to buy them again

Crashes. Since last update I have not been able to access my annual subscription. Needs to be fixed, and subscribers should receive some compensation...

Update is not good. Crashes and is unusable.. This is unacceptable. Since updating my app in Newsstand, all my previously downloaded issues are nowhere to be found and when connected to wifi, the app doesn't even load because it crashes right away! What is going on? Fix ASAP or refund me my subscription. It's not that the app is bad, you can't even use it so forget liking it or not.

Downloaded subscription does not work!. Although I very much enjoy the magazine... I have to give this app a total thumbs down. Nothing would load on 2x attempts of trying to view September and October's issues! I want my money back on the months that I paid for!!

Do not do update if u have an iPad 1. I updated the app and now I can't read any of my Esquires. Help!!!!

Broken. Broken, please fix or refund

Piece of crap. Hey Esquire mag. Your app is still a big piece of crap what a waste of money even after the update.

Watch out!. I paid for a yearly subscription a week ago and am still waiting on some customer support because the iPad app does not recognize me as a subscriber and so I can't download the latest issue. No problems with any of the other magazine apps I've paid for so I'd suggest looking elsewhere for now...

Good Deal for the Price. On the whole, some very well-written and informative articles.

Still terrible after all these years. Because everyone wants to read a magazine with a big red navigation bar at the top of the page! Lol, so bad. What sort of clowns thought this was a good idea.

Cant read it if you have the print subscription. Its stupid that as a print subscriber you cant read the magazine online. Delete

Download doesn't work.. Paid for a subscription and app crashes every time you try to load the magazine. Fix it or give us our money back.

FIX THIS APP. It's broken, fix it.

Bye-bye Esquire. Great magazine, terrible app. Ongoing download problems so I am canceling my subscription.

Subscription screw up. It is same with me. Purchased subscription and it doesn't recognize me. Emailed support several times with no response. Seems pretty shady. It has happened with number of subscribers. Will Hearst ever respond?

Worse magazine app. I downloaded the app, paid for a 1 yr subscription but have not read a single issue. App crashes as soon before I can read a single word. Please fix or copy GQ's or Men's Health app, at least they work. I would give this app 0 stars if I could

Not free for print subscribers?. Hey Hearst! Time and Conde Nast give print subscribers free iPad versions. When are you going to wake up and do likewise? Nobody is going to pay twice if they already subscribe to the print editions. Oh yeah, and why is it so expensive for digital subs compared to print versions anyway

Has stopped working since iOS5. Was fine before. Now crashes on startup since >1 week. Useless paid yearly subscription. Technically this is robbery.

Doesn't download. Don't spend your money on this unless they fix the app. I have tried repeatedly to download the most recent issue with no success. I read their FAQ and they seem to know about the issue but the fix doesn't work. It just keeps saying "waiting".

Resorting issues stores subscription.. The update seems to delete your subscription history as well. Chose the restore issues option and sign in. restoring the previous issues also restores subscription details and all is then good.

Doesn't open after update. I can't open any Esquire magazine after this crappy update. I have a paid subscription....please fix ASAP!!! Don't you guys test this before rolling out updates?!

No benefit for print subscribers. Unlike the GQ app, Esquire does not provide free access to current print subscribers.

Very good. Been a subscriber for over a year. Never had a problem with crashes. The format, video and of course content is top notch as per esquire history. Look forward to my copy every month. The other reviews make me question the reviews now of other on line mags. Keep up the great work esquire.

Won't download. The latest version of the app worked well at first. Now the January issue won't download at all. Of all my magazine subscriptions, Esquire is unfortunately the worst. The publisher (Hearst) really needs to look at the backend that they are using and figure out whether it is worth continuing with a system that seems to break down on a regular basis. I'm going to give them a couple of weeks to see if they can fix this. Otherwise I will be cancelling my subscription.

je n'ai pas aimer. je n'ai pas aimer

Crashes Incessantly. I was trying to choose which magazine to subscribe to: Esquire or GQ. This app made the decision very easy, though I would have liked the opportunity to base my decision on the content of the magazines. I downloaded an issue (thankfully, it was a free preview issue), and found that I couldn't turn the page more than two or three times before it crashed. I gave the app more chances than it deserved, continually restarting the app and even my iPad, and closing all other running apps to make sure it wasn't a RAM issue, hoping for different results, but I was consistently disappointed. Given the number of negative reviews, it certainly doesn't look good for the publisher that the app hasn't been updated since the beginning of December. Still, I'd be happy to give it a chance once they get their act together. Telling me to delete and reinstall is not the way to deal with a buggy app.

Love the app, love the magazine. Great magazine and great, interactive app. This brings magazine reading to another level and love how Esquire is using technology. Advertising and style tips are always out of my price range, but there are some thoughtful articles and great writing in this magazine as well as some diversions. Keep up the good work! I am definitely hooked.

Woefully inadequate. I've had this app since August and have only been able to download one issue. It crashes, it won't download, it hangs, it's shockingly bad and ill conceived. It's performance is only eclipsed by the utter lack of updates and patches to fix the broken app.

Never works. Save your money. This is a terrible app that never works. It's too bad, because it's a good magazine, but the app is horrible.

S L O W downloads. crashes.. Why can't they get it together and make an app that works? Just about ready to bid Esquire adieu, sadly.

Esquire. This app froze my app store

Ios5 version is crap.. If the new version can't be fixed in a week maybe you should go back to the old one

Crash. Crash crash crash. Really nothing else I can say about.

Has bugs. I purchased my first issue and the app keeps crashing when I try to open the issue. My iPad 2 is fully up to date. Either we need an app update or I will need my $5 back very soon.

Crashes. I've never written a review, But I feel is necessary to warn others that this app keeps crashing since I have upgraded to the new software update for esquire. Fix it or give us subscribers are money back!

Money Back. Worst app ever!!! They can't get the fix right. Money back please or visa will get it back for me.

Doesn't work. Echoing comments seen here: it doesn't download, and previously downloaded copies keep crashing. Good magazine, poorly developed application that fails to live up to the quality of the publication.

Interactive content good...text not so much. First, let me say that the interactive content in this magazine is quite good. My only real complaint with this app is that much (if not all) of the text was a very low resolution--blurry actually. Being a user of the 3rd gen iPad I find it ridiculous that text should look blurry. I am not just saying more blurry than I am used to with this retina display...I mean blurry to the point where it is not very good to read for much length. Fix this and i'll give 5 stars.

Well, it used to work.... The app crashes whenever I try to open an issue. Deleted, reinstalled, restored purchases, and more of the same. Frustrating as this was the app that convinced me that magazines were viable on the iPad. Looking forward to an update that resolves this issues.

No Love for the Print Subscribers. Really?! People who were too foolish to be fans of your magazine since you only published in print get no dual complimentary electronic subscription? Lots of publishers do it. Y'know? Publishers who appreciate their customers. Don't you know that you make the lion's share of your profit through advertising? Thus, it's to your benefit to keep your subscribers happy so they keep renewing and you get to keep boasting about your high subscriber numbers to potential advertising business. Guess its time I stop being so generous with my hard-earned money since you can't throw your subscribers a bone.

Never had any problems. I subscribed to this digital mag after my print subscription ended about 6 months ago. I have never had any problems with this app. I am not sure why so many others are having problems. I think its a great port to the ipad with the added multimedia. I just wish it was a universal app so I could also read it on my iphone.

Not the Worst App Ever. I gave this app one star in an earlier review. I thought it was Dreadful. Turns out Esquire just doesn't convert subscriptions from print to digital as quickly as I thought it would be done, so I couldn't access anything. A day later I got an email with instructions on how to get a user ID and password, which I already had. I went through the process anyway and then everything has worked fine since then. I'm still checking out the app, so I'm not sure what the final rating will be. It doesn't deserve the zero I wanted to post earlier, though.

Awesomely Interactive. If you don't already have a print edition (which I did not) then this app is the way to go. It's interactive, the lay out is great and you can download past editions. I'm not a big fan of reading books on my iPad, but love the Esquire app and read the articles with ease. For the naysayers, the common theme in complaints is that because they already have a print subscription (at $8 a year), this should entitle them to the electronic edition. If that's your big hang up, take photos of the pages on your iPad and then you can read it on the go.

Good content and quick downloads. I never had any issues with downloads taking long maybe a minute two at the max. This is more than a magazine, there are interactive graphics and videos. If you are still running dial up or 1mb internet maybe the printed version will be better suited for you.

Genius. Do not get the complaints on print subscriptions. I too have a print subscription, but this app is genius. Each cover is a video cover, every month different multimedia within, and the joke is virtually told directly to you! Oh, I almost forgot to mention how user friendly this app is. Really easy to navigate. Love the EL (esquire library) great to pull up recipes, cocktails, etc. Kudos Esquire- can't wait to see what you bring to us next

DO NOT BUY THIS APP. Do yourself a favor and stay away from purchasing this app. I've been a subscriber for more than a year and it has been broken more months than it has worked. Even now it's not working and they acknowledged it's a problem but they refused to credit your account or refund your money. Their customer service is so bad that I've cancelled both this subscription app AND their print magazine. Too many other magazines who does what they do to put up with such arrogance from a company. I hope this helps many other from flushing their money like I have mine.

No free access if you are a print subscriber?!. I think Esquire has some work to do in order to keep their business alive. I have been a print subscriber for almost 10 years. I was excited to see Esquire's print edition that they have an iPad app. I downloaded, installed and tried to use only to discover that print subscribers don't have access to the iPad free of charge (or even at a discount). REALLY?!? This is a poor way to promote loyalty and deeper affinity to their brand. Charge extra for print and include digital access for God's sake. I'd do that. Just don't make me feel alienated from the app if I'm already part of the family. Bad "bush-league" subscription plan Esquire. Think again.

Better. When updating the app, it doesn't ask if you want to restore previous issues. You have to update the app and then tap on the magazine and go into settings (the little cog icon at the top right) where it asks if you want to restore purchases. It wasn't recognizing my subscription, but it is now. When I tap on "purchase for $4.99" it downloads without charging just like it used to. If you haven't upgraded to the new operating system for the iPad, it may not work right though.

Is there anyone on the planet who has gotten this to work?. Dear Esquire, Do you read these reviews. I have written your customer support requesting a refund and you clearly do not read those. You are tuning customers way from your magazine daily by continuing to have this defective product here and seemingly no plan to rectify the problem. I don't get it. I encourage all unhappy customers o continue to voice their concerns until someone at Esquire gives us our money back or fixes the problem.

1.0.5 still 100% unusable, as several previous versions have likewise been. I am astonished at how broken this so-called award winning app remains. In each of the several previous versions, this app has been 100% unusable; it remains 100% unusable. As I have always done with each "update", and as instructed by Esquire, I have deleted the previous version and downloaded the fresh new version. Useless. Every attempt at downloading any issue continues to fail, every time, with a "cannot connect to server" message. Using an iPad running iOS 5.0.1. *sigh*

This is a joke, right?. I've been paying for this since November 2011, 18 months. During that time, I actually was able to get ONE issue onto my iPad (and that was the first one in 2011). Every month I think it may be different. New updates in the App Store talk about how good it's going to be. Regardless of update, each attempt at downloading a new issue is met with a progress bar that doesn't move, and patience that expires. Note to people writing the app: Before the whizzy features get baked in, make sure the magazine is readable. If you want to read Esquire, suggest getting the magazine.

They Finally Got It Right BUT...... The new app functions properly and the server issues are a thing of the past. As the content has always been fun and informative, make sure you are using the NEW app. Their old app (now the ARCHIVE app) is sadly a flunk again. Nice gesture to provide the prior content for free but if you still can't get to it...we expect that from politicians not magazine editors. People lost all the old content and Hearst doesn't even have the courtesy to fix and/or give us the facts.

Do not purchase. Cannot access purchases. Apple please investigate. I've subscribed to Esquire via this app since Newstand launched. There was a period where the app was unusable (about 6 months in 2012). I complained and Apple issued a full refund for my subscription. I believe that eventually Esquire either yanked the app from the store or Apple made them fix it. Anyways, problems are back again. The app can efficiently collect my money for the subscription, and spam me with notifications, but it cannot deliver new issues or previous purchases. Buyer, beware. Apple, please investigate. Fellow subscribers, complain.

Unconscionable. While this has been stated repeatedly it bears regular restating: it is the worst example of corporate greed and the worst customer valuation ever! I have been an Esquire print subscriber for decades and if I want to access the magazine digitally I have to pay the subscription price, again. Publications far more important and substantive (e.g. The Economist, The New Yorker, even Sports Illustrated) only charge one subscription fee. It is disgusting that this publication cares so little for, and treats so shabbily, its customers. I'll be canceling my subscription - they're not good enough to get away with it. SHAME!

This app does not work. After uninstalling and reinstalling the app I finally was able to ad the first issue of my subscription. Now, a month later it looks liked need to droit all over, the magazine crashes the app whenever you try to load it. On top of the fact that it took 4 tries to download an issue due to technical issues. Furthermore, what brought me back to this page and ultimately write a review is that I can't find where to cancel the subscription. The app doesn't include the functionality, and the instructions are not helpful as it appear you may not be able to cancel from an iPad. I would highly suggest not purchasing a subscription until the fix their application.

The wait was worth it. Ok, i was a little bummed that my first try didn't work-- but then I tried with this new version. When I opened up the issue, I had one reaction: Wow. The pics look amazing on my retina, the scrolling is smooth, the videos load right away. And you can't beat the writing. Finally Esquire has an app that lives up to it's rep.

DO NOT SUBSCRIBE ! Just a big rip off!. New version info states that the download issues have been fixed. Nothing is further from the truth! I try to download the magazine but I keep getting a message that another download is in progress and please wait. I waited, and waited and waited but the magazine never downloaded. So here I am having paid for the magazine with nothing in return. I'm going to try to get my money back as soon as I can find out how to do this. I'm giving this magazine one star because I have no choice. I wanted to give the magazine zero stars.

The download Problem. Excellent magazine. Loses one star due to download problem. Solution? (admittedly, a work-around): Initial download of the issue is relatively quick, and I've got a measly 3 Mps connection. Once that's done, click through each article. Pause on the ones that don't come up immediately, and wait until they download. Then continue through the articles, pausing/downloading where needed. When you reach the end of the issue, you've got the entire magazine available for offline reading. Yeah, it's a chore. But it only took me about three minutes with my slow connection. But for two bucks an issue, I don't mind. Esquire Online is heavy with multimedia. Downloading the entire thing would take a very long time. Their solution is the only way of keeping all those bells-and-whistles without posting a massive file, though admittedly, this solution is kind of clunky.

Great!. I'm on iPad1 (iOS 5.1), and this app has been one of my favorites since it came out. And it was one of the first magazine apps for iPad. So thank you Hearst. The price is fantastic ($1.99/month!), content is informative and applicable, not to mention entertaining. Yes it is a bit buggy (I had to delete and redownload last issue), but it beats driving to B&N and buying a copy for over twice the price. Fantastic, keep it up and and you'll keep me as a subscriber! Update: version 2.0.1 works fantastically on my iPad 1.

Esquire App. Impossible to actually review since I could not access the magazine content due to a glitch in the "Guide to Warm Weather Dressing" which would not close out to reveal the contents I had paid for. The only reason I downloaded the app in the first place was to get access to the Joe Hill/Stephen King story Pt 1 from the June/July issue. BTW, the guide was an absolute waste of time- a hash of previously published content including an article on "Important Shoes" that delineated the subtle differences between a boot and a boat shoe. Thank god for American Express- I can just have them deny the charge and I'll kill the app. Esquire needs to either hire a developer that knows what they're doing or stick with the print edition.

A great app with a few bugs. But It is worth every cent. It's an amazing app and esquire's developer has had problems with ios5. I've contacted them and they informed me that their developers are working on a fix. So have hope. It was great when it worked and it will be great when it's fixed. Support the fantastic medium esquire's helped create by having a bit of patience and holding off on the scathing reviews. Every fantastic concept has bumps in the road and we only make it harder for them to make it successful by deterring people from using it.

Error message…crash…error message. I live overseas and miss my old esquire subscription, so I downloaded the iPad app and paid for a 1-year subscription. I downloaded my first issue without too many problems. That's the good. The bad… I've tried repeatedly to download back issues over the last two weeks and always get a "cannot connect to server" error. It says "The store cannot connect to the server. Please try again later". I've tried and tried again and haven't been able to download anything after my first magazine. That, and the new issue pops up at a price of $4.99. Not what I was expecting from my favorite magazine. By the way, I had no problem connecting to the store when I was paying for a subscription.

Good Grief. Esquire, I just don't understand why you can't get this right. Every month, I'm billed for the current issue. Every month, I spend fifteen or twenty minutes trying to get your app to cooperate. Half the time, I get it. The other half, I give up. I suppose the joke's on me. Why am I still paying for this? This app has the potential to be the best on iTunes. The content is fantastic. The build is groundbreaking. Esquire is what I reference when I tell people about the future of digital media. You've owned it. Now... Can you just make it work?

Don't Even Consider It.... This app fails utterly to perform its singular task: to deliver the magazine to your tablet in an easily readable format. I took an annual subscription several months ago and I have had nothing but frustration and disappointment since. To begin with, the app only works in portrait orientation - it does not pivot to landscape, a limitation which I found this to be annoying but tolerable in an "Oh, what the hell" kinda way. The core problem, however, was the constant crashing which occurred each time I tried to download a new issue. The problem invariably goes as follows: the app signals you that a new issue is available; you download the issue; you click on "read" and the app promptly crashes and puts you back into the "Newsstand" view. Like a previous reviewer, I have tried to delete and reinstall the app several times - to no avail; the same problems persist. I am left perplexed how a major national magazine can be so technologically inept. Now my challenge will be figuring out how to cancel my automatically recurring subscription. Paying for one year of content I cannot access is insult enough.

Esquire Gets It. One of the best digital editions from an established print magazine. They have added superb video, audio and interactive content that takes advantage of the iPad's capabilities. The quality that you've come to expect from Esquire is evident here, raising the bar for digital magazines. If you don't at least smile when one of their featured women tells you a joke on the screen, you don't have a pulse.

Shame. I tried to give Esquire the benefit of the doubt; I've always enjoyed the print magazine and decided to give the iPad app a try when I moved overseas. The previous iteration of the app wasn't terrible. Of course, it crashed from time to time, but the usability really wasn't affected. This new version, however, is absolutely un-usable. It's not even open-able. And to top that off, the non-functioning app hasn't been updated with even a moderately functioning version for more than 10 days. This is absolutely unbelievable, and Esquire should be ashamed.

Unusable. New issue either won't open or crashes. Following directions I deleted and reinstalled (just like I did the last three times a new issue came out, convenient right?). Now the new issue won't even download. I don't complain about a lot. I don't write trashy one star reviews just to pitch a fit, but this POS is totally unacceptable. If I could cancel my digital subscription I would. I'd LIKE to just snag an $8 print subscription, but I'm not sure I want to give Esquire or whoever owns them even THAT tiny amount of money. Do not DL or subscribe. Wait for the next update.

Still buggy. I thought that they had mostly figured out the problems (still crashes occasionally), but I guess i was wrong. After resubscribing (yes, I am a glutton for punishment), the app recognized the new subscription. I downloaded the current version and started reading. Later it lost the issue. Then it lost the subscription. I have removed and replaced the app. Did not fix the problem, but at least all of my other issues are gone.

Additional charge to print subscribers for digital edition is ridiculous!. For a while, the digital edition came free with your current print subscription. Now, they're asking for an additional $10 ON TOP of the $30 paid for the regular magazine!?! For a start, why the sudden change? Also, Esquire is a good read, but not worth pay $40 for the "full reading experience". The bait 'n' switch is a downright slap in the face toward its longtime print readers, and a blatant greedy money grab. If Esquire doesn't return the digital edition free for its print subscribers, I'm pretty sure I'll just not renew come the next billing cycle. Shame on you, Esquire and Hearst.

Hearst Should Be Disgraced. I pay for a monthly subscription and have to use the Zinio App and pay again to read Esquire on my IPad. I constantly get the 'cannot connect to server' error message but there's no problem when it comes time to take my subscription fee. Esquire is a magazine that in a not so veiled way attempts to try to tell people the 'correct' way to do things (i.e. dress, buy tech, what wines and foods to eat) etc. It's amazing that it can't properly create a basic IPad app and that this problem has gone on without a fix at least for two months. A complete and utter disgrace that hurts the magazine brand. Lots of people I know have the same problems with the app and I have 6 other subscriptions that work perfectly. Get your app together or you'll lose me as a digital and print reader.

Download Hell. Love the content of the magazine. It's a great mix of articles and holds my interest. They've improved the interactive features which is fine. The problem is that the current version of the app has a feature called progressive downloading which helps make downloads as you read quicker, but totally kills offline use. It can be very frustrating to be on a flight or out and about and the magazine isn't loaded fully. Plus there's no percentage indicator to know (not sure if that still happens) your progress. The previous version had that % indicator. How can you go backwards?

TERRIBLE. I want a REFUND. Love the mag but what's the point if I can't read it!! 1) it doesn't recognize my subscription and I have to click apply for a subscription button before it does (which of course sometimes it doesn't. 2) tried to download august's issue at least 20 times and it times out every time. I've turned off auto-shutoff. Done it overnight. Literally tried everything and never got that issue. Subsequently gave up and never tried again. 3) until today when it said I had an issue and when I clicked "read" it crashed...every time. This app is WORTHLESS!!!

Download? What download?. No double Esquire is the best men's magazine out there for writing, variety and just pure class. I also pick issue with people giving one star just because they think their measly $12 subscription entitles them to the digital format also. BUT... This app has not managed to downloaded an issue once. Not once. Esquire's editor prides himself on some emerging tech firsts (QR codes, e-Ink, etc) but this app is just nowhere near stable. I'm back to print. And while I'd happily pay 2-3 times the current subscription fee for both print and app access, not in its current non-state.

Beautiful app, but good lord, PLEASE fix it. I just finished reading my first issue of Esquire on the iPad. It's a beautiful, feature and content rich app but WOW, is it buggy! My advice to anyone considering this app. DO NOT spend a cent on is until they update it. I made the mistake of downloading the app, then buying a subscription before trying it out. If I hadn't invested the 20 bucks in a subscription, I would have deleted this app a long time ago. If you fail to heed my advice and download it anyway, be prepared to search online for how to open the app, download the content and successfully open the content. This app is a lot of work for the user...too much work. And if you're successful in actually opening an issue of Esquire, expect a lot of crashes and confusing navigation. There's a good app in here somewhere...just know that it is probably going to take a while for the folks at Esquire to extract it. To reiterate...steer clear of this app until they update it.

Big improvement!. I can see why this app received negative reviews. When I first downloaded it I couldn't get it to work. When I bought my iPad 2, I tried it again and it has been working flawlessly. The magazine itself is great. The format takes advantage of the iPad and is easy to navigate and read. I especially like the "Girl telling a joke" feature as it lets me see an actress/model in a different context than I am used to. I hope others who have experienced problems in the past will give it another chance.

A case study in CRM failure. How is it after months of reviews and complaints from customers that the fundamental problem of having to buy both a digital version and print version of the same content still exists for Hearst? Like New Coke this decision by Hearst will go down in history as a case study for B school students on how not to do digital subscriptions. And to add insult to injury when folks do spend good money on the digital edition often times it doesn't work or is plagued with bugs. If I were Hearst, I would take a good, cold hard look at those reviewers who are contemplating the move to GQ. I have been an Esquire subscriber for the better part of a decade and with this decision by Hearst I am considering moving to GQ.

Fix the app.... ...or send an update to take subscribers to the old version. This is irresponsible. If there's no change before November 1, I'll be looking for some compensation. I will not be recommending this app to friends, family, acquaintances, etc. You'd think Esquire would have a statement on their website, and maybe some way for subscribers to read the November edition. For all the hoopla Esquire creates around their iPad edition, this is certainly nothing to be proud of, and would make me question any article they write that's related to technology or online content!

Terrible. Purchased digital subscription and the issues weren't able to be downloaded to the app. Neither customer service or technical support was able to help or was helpful. Now out the subscription price and Hearst is getting back to me to determine if they'll issue me a credit for the undelivered digital magazines. Imagine going into a store, purchasing a shirt, not being given the shirt and then being told by corporate that they'd have to determine if you'd receive a credit for the item not given. Save your $$.

Bueller? Subscribers? Buellers? Subscribers? Where. Love the magazine but can't understand why Esquire doesn't have print subscriber option to download? Subscribers are paying already, why not extend the option for iPad? People Mag & Sports Illustrated have the option and offer it to their subscribers. Surely Hearst is not going to let Time Warner out do them are they!? Don't get me wrong, I'm not a hold out "paper" subscriber only. I enjoy reading mag's on an ipad as well but come on now, Esquires' better than that! It surely can offer the courtesy to their current hard copy subscribers!!!! Double dipping is not nice Esquire! Keep your print subscribers happy and join the rest of the other Mag's and offer the option for your loyal print subscribers!

Print subscribers don't get access without paying again. Esquire is one of my favorite magazines. I've been a subscriber for years, more than a decade now. Imagine my surprise when these people worked up the nerve to release an iPad app and DARED to ask print subscribers to pay MORE money to read the magazine on the iPad. Several other magazines allow you to put your account or subscriber number so you can access the issues on the iPad. I'm sure Esquire will figure out that this is the right thing to do at some point, but until then this is a 1 star app for me. Shame on you, Esquire- and get your act together.

Esquire. Love this app and love the digital edition. Crisp, clear, and full of extra stuff that you get with just a tap on the screen. Not to mention no clutter. It's obvious a lot of work goes into giving each page another 1 or 2 pages of additional material, not just to show we can, but to add to the experience.

crash....crash again. keeps crashing after iOS5 upgrade.... still crashing after the fix. It is absolutely ridiculous that a magazine like Esquire would have this level of quality control or take so long to fix a problem and not fix the problem. I am an avid reader but may consider buying a GQ subscription from now on .... there may be a some debate about which is the better magazine but given Esquire can not even launch the app... no debate on who has the better app. hopefully third time is a charm...or lucky.

Hearst Still Doesn't Get It. So Esquire was finally updated with the ability to buy a digital subscription. Fantastic. Except that if you are a print subscriber, they STILL expect you to subscribe a second time in order to get the digital version. I don't get it, not only have other magazines moved to allowing print subscribers free access to the digital version, they did it months ago. At this point I can only assume this option isn't coming and Hearst simply doesn't care whether their magazines survive or not.

Finally!. Took them long enough, but with this latest update they nailed it. One of the best newsstand apps available. I've had zero issues (iPad 2, iOS 6) downloading, reading, etc. since yesterday's update. The only reason I'm giving it 4 instead of 5 is due to the massive amount of problems in the past. If they can go glitch-free for the next month or so, I'll gladly update to 5/5.

I know how to fix it. Got a reply from the developers - all you have to do to run the app in iOS 5 is to delete it completely, restart the iPad, make sure you are using iOs 5, install the app again and restore all the issues you have purchased. Worked for me so I'm rating the app 5 stars again

iPad subscription not working. I purchased the esquire iPad subscription. It worked for two months and now the app doesn't recognize my subscription. My iTunes account still notes the sub is active; however, the app does not. If you use the app support feature it takes you directly to the Esquire website which offers no iPad support. I used the FAQ email address in the Esquire app, but no one responds. I have called Esquire and Hearst customer service. No one knows about the app. Can someone please help! Update: ever since the ios5 update it crashes every time I try to look at anything. Apple you need to remove this app from your store. I am done with esquire.

Needs an option to download all content at once. The app works well and has a great flow to read the content you want when you want it. My only gripe is that when you think you have downloaded the content you haven't because the app constantly requires an Internet connection in order to download the content as you read it. This makes attempting to preload content for long haul flights almost impossible. I think this is the trend for new magazine apps to reduce the load time but it just makes the app useless for people who's goals are to use the app on the go (think NY Subway, airplanes , train rides, etc)

They Don't Have Their Act Together. I can't access the most recent issue (Jan/Feb). App prompts me to either buy a subscription or the issue. I subscribed in Oct for a year and got the Oct, Nov and Dec issues. Still have access to those issues. Despite Esquire's (Hearst Digital) suggestion to either log out or delete the app and then re-install, I still cannot gain access to the most current issue. They then sent me an e-mail telling me they are having a problem with the Jan / Feb issue. I think they are just making things up and can't get their system to recognize that I am a valid subscriber. They're clueless. Wish I had stayed with Zinio, which is a digital fulfillment business that understands their model. Hearst needs to find a partner to deliver the same service that Conde Nast delivers with their digital magazines.

Subscribers have to pay again?!?!. I was shocked that they actually expect people who subscribe to the magazine to pay again to read it on their iPad. Equally shocked that the electronic version (with its extremely low distribution costs) is *more* expensive than the paper version which must be printed and mailed around the country. The Hearst Corp needs to figure out if they're serious about electronic versions of their publications because their current strategy is asinine. One star because I wasn't willing to pay a second time to see it it's any good.
