ClockMaster - Time Regulator App Description & Overview
What is clockmaster - time regulator app? >>> Check out the demo videos at ClockMasterApp.com
ClockMaster is a clock timing software, in many ways similar to watch timegraphers, but specifically designed to work with mechanical pendulum clocks. The app analyzes the ticking sound of the escapement to determine the clock's running rate measured in Beats Per Hour (B/H). This rate is then compared to a specified Target Rate, and the Error is reported as Seconds Per Day fast or slow (±S/D).
The speed of a mechanical pendulum clock is not constant, fluctuating with age and wear, spring tension and even temperature. The ClockMaster app was created with a focus on accurate long-term measurements where traditional timers often do not function very well.
For the professional horologist or interested amateur, you can now test in the field — put the clock in exact beat and regulate the clock with just a few hours of testing. For increased rate accuracy and in depth investigation of clock movement's behavior, you can conduct long-term measurements for up to two weeks (ClockMaster Pro). Branded, printable PDF reports can be generated for each measurement, and the raw data exported as .csv file for graphing in a spreadsheet (ClockMaster Pro).
ClockMaster Pro (in-app upgrade) provides these additional features:
• Save and share branded, printable PDF reports for each measurement
• Export raw measurement data as a .csv file for spreadsheet analysis
• Conduct long-term measurements of up to two weeks

Clockmaster. Great app. I thought I'd have to write this app myself and I've been learning Xcode and Objective-C in my spare time. It's not an easy thing to do. I am a Certified Master Clockmaker and do a lot of house calls to repair grandfather clocks. My timing machine is bulky and difficult to carry around but my iPhone is always in my pocket. So far I've used it on a Chelsea Ships Clock (300 bpm) and a weight regulator (about 84 bpm) I'm very happy with this app so far.
A handy app. I was having problems getting a new movement set up properly. This app made setting the beat and regulating the movement a breeze. I had the BPH value for my movement, but I didn't need it. I had the pendulum bob set mid-range, so the app was able to work out the proper rate automatically. My only complaint is that it doesn't give a + or - when setting the beat, but that would mean recognizing a tic versus a toc, and that might be beyond what the mic and software can do. The price is a bit steep for what the app does, but after spending just over $300 for a new movement and manuals, it was worth it for me. I didn't splurge and go for the in-app upgrade. The accuracy of the standard version was fine for me.
Disappointed!. I thought it sounded too good to be true, and it was. The only way this app could be useful is if you already know the correct Beats per Minute for the clock. The only way you can do this correctly is to open up the clock, count the teeth on various gears in the movement and calculate it using a formula. This program tries to "guess" the BPM, and assumes it to be an integer. I had 5 antique clocks previously running close to accurate time. Now they are off by as much as 5 minutes per day.
A Fine App, but. This app was and is indeed very helpful to me, though a little limited. I do take issue with the creators asking for an such a steep price for the upgrade (when I already paid for the first one), in order to get a more accurate reading, along with the rest of the functionality I would have expected. One can only come to the conclusion that they turned down the accuracy of the original deliberately. Where I come from, that is considered shysty business practice.
Tick Tock Doc.. Use it several times a week. Has been really useful. Would not want to be without it.
Expensive with hidden costs. 9.99 for basically nothing then another 19.99 for anything useful. My fault didn’t research it did not expect 9.99 charge wouldn’t be complete.
Lenskeeper. I found this app well watching a clock repair video after the person repaired the clock he used this app to regulate and set the timing I tried this on my own cuckoo clock which is never kept time and when I checked it what I thought was a good time was three minutes and 41 seconds off after working with the app for about a half hour and not really wanting to take more time right now I got the Error down to seven seconds per day that’s great I can get it better if I try to work with it more let’s see if it stays that way
Mixed feelings. I question how useful this app really is. It’s fine for getting a clock on beat but only by taping the Apple earbuds so the microphone is taped to the metal of the movement. I purchased the mic they recommend and it’s huge and the sensor doesn’t touch the movement due to it’s odd shape so it picked up NOTHING. I purchased the pro version and it really didn’t make much difference. If you just want a way to set it on beat while in your shop it’s fine but it doesn’t exactly look professional to be taping your earbuds to someone’s grandfather clock while your in there home. There has to be a better way. I didn’t have good results timing a clock but that may be me. It has soooo much potential but it needs a mic that works with it.
Almost perfect. This app helped me resetting a grandfather clock I had to disassemble and clean & oil. The iPhone ear buds work far better than the internal Mic which is almost useless. A clip-on piezoelectric pickup would be much better still. They only thing I don't like is that only an absolute delta is shown. It works be most helpful if there was some indication of which half of the cycle was longer/shorter when adjusting the balance. I ended up using a flashing metronome to tell me whether I had to tighten or loosen the pendulum leader offset. Lose one star for this deficiency. I've tried a couple other apps but this is spot on. I would highly recommend.
Clock timing app. Excellent app, great for timing clock calculates expected beats per hour
Great tool.. After getting the cable and upgrading it works great with the pickup from my old broken timer. Very accurate and easy to use. The auto calculate function is a great feature. Recommend for any body looking for a nice timer. Price of app and a cable is around $40. A lot less then the cheapest time you can find. They start at $200 and go up.
Very useful! Works as advertised. This has become my go-to app when I'm fine tuning a clock, whether it be a perfect tick-tock or getting it timed to as little gain/loss per day. It has been frustrating in the past as the app didn't support my iPhone 5-5S, I had to resort to an old 4 for it to work. Just tried it on my 6S+ and had no problems! I haven't upgraded to pro yet but I am interested as I have a piezo microphone with a 3.5" jack and instead of using my small amp next to my phone I'd love to be able to plug it into my phone and reduce the background noise. $20 is hard to swallow though. Now if it were say $5...
Did Not Work For Me. Followed the directions, used the earbud microphone, app did not reliably measure the clock tick. Looks like you would really need the $20 upgrade for this $10 app to really do anything useful.
Great app for the Clock aficionado…. One of my hobbies is to clean and repair old grandfather clocks. This app helps in a very simple but elegant display to set the bit, the pendulum symmetry, and other more advanced features. I highly recommended it.
5 Star App.. Everything it's claimed to be. Works great and is very usefull for setting up mechanical clocks. The most expensive app I've purchased, but well worth the price.
Excellent app. I’m a clock’s collector so I always do servicing and repairing pendulum clocks. Since I have got the app (one year ago), I found the app indeed very helpful for me to make pendulum clocks beat and work accurately. It will take short time to adjust accuracy of clock if you know BM/BH of it otherwise you note current BM/BH then wait for the clock working for 24 hs and base on accuracy of clock you calculate actual BM/BH then adjust clock work with the new BM/BH. Before when I didn’t have the app, it took me almost one week to make clocks work perfectly. Please share me if any other app is better this app.
Don’t waste your money. The app would be fine except the fact that they say to use iPhone headphones with a mic to get better accuracy and yet the results are worse with an apple headset mic. Without the headset and having the phone literally sitting on the clockwork and I had to have it set at 8.7 out of 10 for sensitivity and it still wasn’t quite right. Any higher and it had false positives and at this setting it still missed some of the ticks.
Don’t waste your money. Purchased this app hoping it would work after following the directions. The microphone on my iPhone was not sensitive enough to make it work. Also even if it was the program samples data at such an erratic rate that taking a brief sample does not work. Their are much better apps out there. Also there are machines for $30 that work great if your willing to look for them. Don’t buy this program.
Very useful app. Update: the latest rewrite has made this app useless. If I could, I would restore the old version. It used to work quit well. Now useless.
ClockMaster did the job. I inherited a 114 year old Ithaca grandfather clock with a Griffith movement and used this program to tune the movement. After getting into the clock, I found that it was not set up correctly and didn’t work at all. After figuring out how it was supposed to be set up, I used the program to set the beat and regulation. I started out with zero knowledge on how a clock works and muddled through the process with the end result being a clock that keeps time. Hurray. The only issue I had was that the auto function for estimating the target rate (for BPH) did not work on this clock at all. I did calculate the actual BPH from counting the number of gears and pivots in the gear train and with the correct BPH imputed, the app worked perfectly. I did splurge on the external Peterson pitch grabber which was money well spent($15 at Amazon).
Very disappointing. I have an old clock whose tick and tock can be heard in adjacent rooms. Sadly this app can't or won't hear it without an upgrade. Add a clunky interface and 1980's GUI and you get a very disappointing product.
Piezoelectric pickup. I’ve found that the Peterson Pitch-grabber works very well with my iPad and iPhone. There is an adapter available on Amazon that allows you to plug in your Lightning charger and your Lightning dongle provided with your iPhone that you then plug the Pitch-grabber into. This is the only adapter that will allow you to run ClockMaster and charge at the same time. Using my iPad Mini 4 with full brightness and full screen it actually will also recharge it at the same time! Great app!!!
Great App. Just started working on our Ridgeway grandfather clock that my wife broke. Not knowing anything about clock repair this handy app helped me adjust the pendulum and crutch but also enabled me to time the anchor which had gotten loose. You need patience, the microphone that came with your iphone and a lot of silence. I would definitely recommend this app and it’s a lot better than using an untrained ear. I just made sure the clock was level and the pendulum swing had stabilized before timing.
Great app. We bought a used Howard Miller grandfather clock that had not been running for a long time. I cleaned it up and used this app to get it in proper beat and regulation. Awesome app! So much easier and accurate then using a stopwatch or counting the beats to set the clock.
Simple but does the job. I used this to calibrate my cuckoo clock. It picked up the pendulum clicks just fine using the internal mic, with no need for an external mic or sensor. I'm definitely no horologist, but this seemed to do the job. When I had a problem due to an iOS version issue, the developer responded within a few minutes and had a fix quickly. It would be nice to have plots to look at drift rate and periodic error. These are available in the Pro version, but even in that it will not make plots - just allow you to export the data to a file to be viewed elsewhere. Would be better to have the plots right in the app.
Outstanding!!!!. The Pro-version is costly, as apps go, but well worth the price. Here's my story. In 1972, I assembled a grandfather clock kit sold by the Emperor Clock Company. That clock still runs well, although it has always been a bit inaccurate. That was until I purchased Clockmaster. The "calibration" mode of the app helped me zero-beat the pendulum, for the first time without having to do so by ear; and less than 30 minutes later, Clockmaster indicated that I had timed the clock properly. Nearly two weeks have elapsed since then, and the clock remains spot on, as confirmed using the app, "Emerald Time." Needless to say, after 40 years of fiddling with my clock, I am impressed.
Works just fine. Once you figure out the sensitivity and exercise some patience . I've used it for some years now. Really handy.
Wonderful!. My ship’s bell clock had been running almost a minute-a-day off for years. With a few iterations of this app it’s now within a second a day!
Works perfectly!. This app does precisely what it says it does. I have a growing collection if antique clocks and this app is absolutely superb! Thanks so much!
No, just don't.. Don't waste your money on this. It doesn't work.
Review. Works as advertised. Note that when using the iPhone earbud microphone one must use the highest sensitivity so the clock ticking must be fairly loud.
Will not calibrate to my watch.. This app will not calibrate to my watch through a microphone. Maybe a piezo?
Won't work after iOS upgrade. Did work but the app freezes after the latest iOS update. None of the buttons work.
Will not work for 400-day clocks. I really don’t understand why they’ve set a bottom threshold on how many beats per hour you can measure. My clocks I work on operate at 8 beats per minute. I can get it to measure correctly due to this threshold. It would be useful if I could set the BPH to 480.
Can't do what it claims. The program claims to tell you how fast or slow your clock is. But it can't know, because it has no way of knowing what the CORRECT beat rate of the clock is. It assumes the correct rate is the integer number of Beats Per Minute that is nearest to the measured rate. This might be true sometimes, but not most of the time. If the correct rate for the clock is a fractional value of BPM, the app will steer you to set the clock at an erroneous rate. I looked at the first ten rates of Ansonia clocks from a reference list. Four of them resolved to an even number of BPM, six did not. This app would cause you to set 60% of these clocks either fast or slow.
Unbelievably helpful. I was getting my butt kicked by a wooden mechanical clock I made. I was using metronome apps, stopwatches, etc. to try and get the beat and regulation right. I'm talking weeks of time spent. Wasted. I finally found this app and it does everything it says, and does it very well. The only complaint I have, if you can call it that, is that I wish they had the beat delta info on the regulation screen. I was considering upgrading to the pro version but it's another $19.99 and it doesn't really tell you everything that is included with that upgrade.

not sensitive to watches. tried it on my automatic (Valjoux 7750) and unfortunately the iPhone nor its remote mike did not pick up the ticking. and therefore the app was completely useless to me. Ya never know if ya neva give it a go Oh well, its only money.
Excellent utility for antique clock accuracy. Thanks for programming this handy ClockMaster utility that's perfect for home users like me. It can assist in calibration of clocks post-service in good working order. As for wrist watches, I've found I can use it or 'experiment' with my 1956 vintage Omega Seamaster Calendar, and others, but first I record the watch beat in extreme HD quality using an 'expensive' voice recorder (mine is an Olympus DM-670. I can then play back the hi-fidelity recording (amplifying if necessary) via good speakers, directly into ClockMaster... Thanks for a fun & useful horological utility!

Useless. This app is supposed to tell you how precise is your timepiece. You can figure it out by comparing it against your smartphone, a GPS or any official time provider. Now, if you are a watch afficianado wanting to improve the precision of your automatic watch, this app is useless. Even after 5 minutes of sampling, the average numbers (bpm and error per day) do not stabilize, so you don’t know if the adjustment that you did is OK. The kernel doesn’t seem to calculating the average nor doing any statistic filtering on large sampling. Disappointing.
Awesome. Very usefull and very precise it really work i'm very impressed now my clock got the same presision as my computer ! I' m very sasified thanks!
Long Awaited. I have no idea how long this app has been around but with a properly adjusted microphone it's all I could ever want. I've build 34 clocks and countless hours working on regulating them. This app makes it painless. Thank you very much!!
Don't waste your money!. Waste of money! My antique clock is quite loud and is fairly accurate. This app tells me it loses 3min/day - rubbish!
