Wx for iPad App Description & Overview

What is wx for ipad app? The venerable U.S. weather app Wx, named a Mac Gem by Macworld magazine, is now available for iPad! Wx displays current conditions, forecasts, alerts, and radar for U.S. locations using high fidelity XML data from the U.S. National Weather Service. The app is designed for two specific types of customers: serious weather watchers who want detailed information and facts with no fuss, and casual users who want a fast, clean, and functional weather app that has low memory overhead and low CPU/battery usage.

Wx lets you choose your location on an embedded map, and uses that to setup custom forecasts based on the latitude and longitude of the location. Forecasts include a 7-day summary "point" forecast, and a 7-day “pro” forecast that graphs temperature (actual and apparent), dew point, relative humidity, cloud cover, wind speed, wind direction, gust speed, 12-hour probability of precipitation, 6-hour liquid precipitation amount, and 6-hour snow amount. These forecasts are about as good as it gets if you need to plan work, sports, hobbies, and outdoor activities based on upcoming weather. With their high spatial resolution, the point and pro forecasts are especially useful in coastal and mountainous regions, where typical zone forecasts can be inaccurate.

Wx also lets you receive current conditions data from nearby NWS observation sites (over 1700 available in the U.S. and its territories), get radar data from nearby NEXRAD radar sites, and receive warnings from nearby city- and county-based alert zones.

Wx lets you bookmark and setup weather maps for quick reference. Choose from many default NWS maps and images, or provide the URL for any map of your choice and load it right in the app! If you have preferred weather providers, you can load your favorite maps and images right in Wx and keep them handy.

Wx is crafted with attention to detail by a professional software developer with 29 years of experience, 15 years focused on developing weather software for OS X and 12 years writing apps for iOS devices. Wx has multiple levels of redundancy to handle severe weather events that can strain NWS servers, and even offers network settings for both Wi-Fi and cellular operation so that you can fine tune the app’s performance and bandwidth needs.

Mac users, be sure to check out Wx for OS X on the Mac App Store. iPhone users, check out Wx for iPhone here on iTunes.

My favorite weather app. This app provides me with more consistently accurate forecasts for my location than any other app that I've tried. I'm glad the developers have continued to keep it up to date even as the NWS services keep changing, because I'd hate to have to go without it.

Radar map does not zoom. Look at free apps for your area first.. This app is convenient for getting weather conditions and forecasts at multiple sites in US and looking at National Trends with downloaded maps. However, for local weather look at free apps in your area from local TV stations or other sources before you spend the money. The radar map in Wx does not zoom in so the resolution for your specific location is limited.

My general weather iPad app of choice. I've been using the desktop version for a few years and the iPad version is now my general weather iPad app of choice. It's reliable and the developer is very responsive.

OK, but not enough to it. What I look for in a weather app is a more in-depth understanding of what's going on. Wx does not provide that. It gives thorough forecasts and cool-looking gauges for displaying current conditions, and a nice set of maps. It's interface is clean. The "Pro Forecast", a line chart of predicted upcoming temperatures, is nifty. But that's it. The app includes a list of predefined NWS maps, but could go much further in that direction. If it did, I would rate it more highly. How about a link to a map that shows a radar-enhanced or weather map-enhanced satellite loop? I actually prefer the AccuWeather pro app for iPad, even though it has unsophisticated maps.

WX best weather app yet!. At last a weather app done properly. WX puts a wealth of weather information on your iPad, clearly and attractively presented. Adding additional locations is a breeze, and the ability to select watch and alert areas is ingenious. After trying a bunch of others, I've found the best in WX. The developer is responsive to feedback and suggestions. For the price - WX is a bargain. Five stars.

Update broke it!. Looks like it is now working (I just updated to iOS5), so I will give it back it's good rating. Worked great before this last update. Now doesn't seem to be able to get updates.

A new iPad weather app reigns supreme!. I have used Wx on my Mac for years and I really like it. Wx on the iPad though is truly king ... this app is amazing. The interface is gorgeous, easy to navigate, and it provides all the information a weather geek loves. It also launches very quickly, which is important in an app like this. Whether you just want the current conditions and forecast or you want a ton of weather info, this is the app for you. Wx is going to be the only weather app I need on my iPad.

Thanks for updating the iPad version. Thanks for updating the iPad version so that it can be viewed in landscape mode and be zoomable.

Excellent no-nonsense weather app. So tired of all the web-based weather sites - finally an app that shows me exactly what I want to know, in a clean, responsive interface. Great job!

A full year?. I just bought a new iPad that can run the latest version of my favorite weather app. Now I find out landscape was removed A FULL YEAR AGO. Why no update since iOS 10?

The Best. Thank you for bring back landscape mode on iPad. The best weather app is now better than ever!

Great Mac app comes to iPad!. I've been using the Mac app for years and welcome the continuity of the new iPad app.

Beautifly done. I have used WX on my Mac for years, and I was eagerly awaiting WX for the iPad. I wasn't disappointed. No other weather app comes close. Outstanding!

Real Good. This is one of the better weather apps. it is very complete with weather maps and US locations but not worldwide locations although these locations such as Europe can be viewed on the map. One just can not retrieve the weather from anything but US locations. I hope they add other locations in the future. Right now it is all about the US so I hope they update in the future. Still this is a great looking and fun weather app for US weather.

Unable to link to sites, only to images. VERY disappointed in this app. I was hoping to link to sites such as HRRR, model sites, SKEW-T or even GOES 16 sites. You are better off just creating shortcuts in your web browser or short cuts to your desktop to get sites requiring interactive input to work. If the site link does not end in a picture format such as .jpg, you get a download error on right side of screen. In safari, I get the looping graphic image perfectly. Also, once you do create a link, you can’t edit the link. You have to delete the link and start all over again rather than just updating a link within an existing menu option you just created.

Wx for iPad. Don't know what the previous versions were like, but this one's perfect for me. Fast, no glitz, and great location options.

Not very useful. No hourly forecast. No local radar (I just want my city, not the entire geographic region). Adding a new location is not simple, you have to choose radar stations and stuff near you (and I don't know if one is a better choice than another.) Waste of $4.... as ad-saturated as it is, the free TWC app gives me more useful information.

Works great for a quick at-a-glance update. I fly small, General Aviation airplanes as an instructor and occasional business -- which is construction so that means spring and summer flights mostly, and Wx is THE issue for... well, for everything... EVERYTHING! Ok I'll calm down -- this app is now on my home screen and it sits between Radar Scope and Foreflight. It's a nice, concise and clean snapshot of the present Wx, and you can add as many locations as you want (plus maps... GOES, basic Doppler reflectivity, clouds/infrared -- a good sample of what NOAA has to offer). This app is a great supplemental weather tool, and it's not trying to be your one-stop shop for a Wx product -- because true Wx freaks like myself know that you can never have too much information -- or too many weather apps. 2 cents for what it's worth...

Needs to be updated for the retina display!. On the new iPad 3, the maps are tiny and they don't scale and they can't be resized. If the app was updated for the new iPad, I'd have given it 4 stars.

Finally deleted the app.... They removed landscape mode capabilities in early October. I have been waiting since that time for them to restore the landscape functionality to the app - finally gave up and deleted the app and am now looking for a better solution. I have to say, these developers must be REALLY lost if they can't even restore previous functionality to the app. Either way, I think that lack of landscape mode is information that a prospective buyer should be made aware of.

Best weather app for iPad. It is great to see the best weather app for Mac now on the iPad! Wx is fast, stable and easy to add and save current and new locations. Developer support is outstanding. It has a simple and elegant interface - just the weather - thank you very much...

Doesn't work. Wx for iPad app does not work on my iPad Pro using the latest beta iOS. It launches, but will not allow me to add any locations. It allows me to choose a location from the map, but won't allow the choosing of any local stations. The "Use this location" link remains greyed out. disfunctional. I have no problem with the iPhone version using the same iOS. It works fine. The Star rating pertains only to this problem. The app is great when it works!

One of the more detailed weather apps I've seen. One of the things I like most about this app is the number of maps that are available that offer a lot of information besides a radar picture. As a pilot this bigger picture information is important to me. There are a few things I would like to see added to the app, mainly a way to change the units. This is becoming one of my most used weather apps that I use in conjunction with one another.

Best Weather App On iTunes. Coming on the heels of some major storms around here, I am absolutely thrilled about this latest update! Changing to county-based alerts allows me to pick up areas that I couldn't before. Also, have to say that the developer is fantastic; you have a question, you send an email, and it's quickly addressed. (Even when I inquired after a feature that turned out not to be practical, it was explained why it couldn't be implemented, rather than simply being told "no".) Money is very tight for me, but I do not regret what I spent on this--more than reasonable, for everything that it does. Well worth it!

Thanks. Thank you for fixing the text forecast format. That is the first thing I look at for local wx forecast. Only thing I don't like is the bland white background.

Needs some features. First, it needs the ability to choose a default location. I also wish it had more detail about forecasts. I bought this based on ratings, hoping to replace Weatherbug, which just added ads. But I still use Weatherbug for the detailed information it provides. Not sure this app is much improvement over the free ones out there.

Fast, accurate. Best WX app out there. Great app! Thanks for putting this together, it is exactly what I was looking for. The NWS/NOAA is the best and most accurate information, and this app doesn't junk it up with unnecessary graphics and animations. I have two requests: 1. The wind arrows should point where the wind is from, not where it is going. I'm in aviation, this is the norm in my field. It's also how the data is represented on the NWS web site. I understand others might like it as it currently is - perhaps a user selectable option? 2. Could we hide/reorder the graphs in the "pro" section? Those are minor quibbles of course. Still five stars!

my favorite weather app. i like the simplicity and information-rich character of this weather app.

Needs serious work. Weatherbug is 8 times as useful at 1/4 the price. I haven't used the Mac version, which may be good, this is not. No radar zoom - Lame. Odd navigation. Unappealing fonts. Needs total rewrite.

Crashing problem. Great app but the app keeps crashing when opened. Reinstalled and restarted iPad 3 and it continues to crash

Great Weather App !. Great weather app ! One of the best for weather. The new update is really good !

App crashes - Stay Away!. Looks pretty but crashes when trying to add any location. I guess if I lived in Cupertino it might be O.K. But if you want to see weather anywhere else your out of luck. How do I get my $ 4.99 back?

This is fantastic. This is the best weather app in the store! And it's certainly not difficult to set up. In fact, take a little time and you'll enjoy the exceptional options and graphics while you choose where to get your information from. No other weather app comes close. To the developer: GREAT JOB!

Wx for iPad is great. Wx for iPad is a very useful tool for anyone interested in having detailed weather information for their or any U.S. location. Includes maps from NOAA and a Pro Forecast giving additional details, e.g. relative humidity, cloud cover, wind speed and direction. The only weather app you will ever need

EDITED - Working Again. Program is working again. Was a 4 - 5 star program. Now, it simply will not open (after closing program in background, rebooting iPad, etc.)

Better. The developer has made some good adjustments to the app's new GUI with this minor release — that aspect of the app is now quite usable. However, there is still no way to get the good local NOAA forecasts, only the forecasts for their specific observation stations. This is not at all useful in areas with highly varying microclimates. For some users, this may not matter, in which case this is a good four- or five-star app. For users in mountainous terrain, however, or for those on the waterfront, this app remains far less useful than it was before.

OK even Nice...but needs more. OK I bit... I am a meteorologist working in Greenland and while I can find everything and more than I need for free on the internet this APP does have some nice aspects. The best being the quick access bar on the left. I have been able to add some old DIFAX charts as images which I really like...old school stuff. The one real big thing I am disappointed about it not being able to ZOOM into the images...especially the satellite! Come on! One of the greatest things about the iPad is the two finger zoom! Also you have looping on the radar but not satellite! Come on! Hopefully these are on the way, with the addition of adding some different RADAR images. One more thing...add a way to request TAF/METAR data. A simple ADDS type request format would be great! And hopefully someday go more international. Overall a nice APP.

My favorite weather app so far!!. Great application. Lots of useful information at a glance. I like the flexibility and configuration options. Contrary to an earlier comment, it's easy to set up new locations and name them whatever you want. Easily the best weather application of the dozen or so that I have tried previously.

Needs refresh button. The only way to manually refresh is to kill the app then reopen. This would be a five star but to have to do this just to refresh is nuts. Need a refresh button on the iPhone and iPad versions just like the desktop version. I would have held off if I knew this before my purchase of the iPhone and iPad versions. Wait for an update on this before you spend the money.

Very Cool. Very cool interface, clean design. Well worth it!

Not User Friendly. There isn't any way to set up your location. A waste of money!!! Stay clear of this frustrating App.

Excellent WX App!. I've used WX on my Mac for my weather, now I have this excellent version for my iPad. Easy to set up with the maps provided, and you can easily set up your personal favorites from other sources. Zip codes work fine for location set up, and it seems that updates are rather fast. One request for a future update would to enable zoom on images, but it is 5-star to me as is!

Background changed to all white. Hate the all white background intensely. All white is hard on the eyes and for me, much more difficult to read. Please at least give us the choice of background color. Otherwise, will have to find new weather app.

Please return landscape mode to the app. Never understand why an update comes along to apps, and the developer drops landscape mode. It is a necessity for the iPad Pro

A great app. A very good app. Does what it says it will do. Lots of information, no problems.

New IOS wrecks Wx. An upgrade in weather service servers once killed the functionality of this great app & the developer had to scramble for weeks to restore it. Now the latest IOS is working its magic....It remains a mystery to me why this can never be anticipated and addressed beforehand. I guess its back to the old 'Forecast' app, again....Content and functionality over jellybean graphics and candypants-wearing millenial marketeer aesthetics, anyday, thanks much....(As in, eat MY shorts, o.k.?)

Used to be great, now too hard on the eyes. This used to be my favorite weather app. Unfortunately, the latest update replaced an easy-to-read appearance with a very harsh black on white scheme (think typewritten text on white paper). It's too harsh and jarring to be readable. I look forward to an added option to restore a less painful appearance

Sleeps on the dock and no current time. My iPad mini seems to go to sleep on the dock and the app does not include the current time. I need an app for a nightstand weather station so I know what I'm up against when I get up before dawn to exercise. If you don't need to know what time it is and having to wake your iPad up to see the current conditions is not a deal breaker then this may be the app for you. One minor third issue that would be nice would be a red display option. Blue light messes with ones ability to sleep.

Great app. One of the fastest weather apps out there and I've tried a lot of them. The display is clean and informative. The Pro Forecast contains a lot of information in an easy to digest format.

Wx. Not a worldwide app - good for domestic weather only. No written forecasts .

Genuinely useful. By far the best of the crop of current iPhone weather apps for the casual meteorologist. Nice combination of NWS detailed forecasts and observations in a pretty package, and the only app I know of which will produce meteograms. Still missing though is any real customization - it would be nice to choose what is plotted, and please, please include an option for metric units in the next update. But on the whole, great app - keep it up.

Great app. Really useful app that may fill the void for a prosumer weather app for the ipad. This app is way ahead of all the other offerings. Love the ability to "web clip" maps from all corners of the internet, i added clear sky astronomy chart for my city! 2 suggestions, pinch to zoom on the maps and the ability to use gif loops would make it highly useful. This is already one of my favorites, highly recommended! Worth the price! Foster2

No Longer Works. Wx stopped working. It doesn't fetch data.

Pressure. Add an indicator to show pressure rising and falling, pressure change over time it is the change that is interesting more than the current pressure. Add the ability to zoom in and our on NOAA maps, ie pinch

Currently not working. App stopped downloading the written forecast.

forgot something.. what dick said. why won't it go into landscape mode for ipad?

Excellent app. Finally, an app worth the purchase price. Nicely done. Ken Florian

Sad. This used to be a "go-to" app, but since they deleted the landscape mode, it's near useless. The developers lost interest in the app and have orphaned it.

So so. Nice looking weather station in landscape mode. Graphics for radar are probably the worst of any of the weather apps out there. Also they can not be resized( zoomed in or out) Annoying that in portrait mode a quarter of the screen is taken up by locations bar which cannot be collapsed unless you go to landscape mode

My #1 weather app. I like weather apps and have tried several. This is the best wx app I've seen so far. Grade: A.

My favorite; I've tried many** But needs radar update. The best of them! BUT extend radar range to include offshore Pacific Ocean, please radar coverage of the Pacific --THAT is where our weather usually comes from. For inland users I rate this 5+ ___for WestCoast users, it needs an update...extending radar range...so 4 stars and waiting.

Functional but Portrait only.. I would like to see landscape capability returned.

Seriously?. A update to 3.0 to support iOS 10 that doesn't have a landscape mode on the iPad Pro? Hello! You people ever heard of a iPad Pro Keyboard or Logitech Create? Zero Stars. ZERO.

Reliable and Complete. I have 4 or 5 weather apps on my phone at any one time. The weather in my area is changeable; a small wind shift can drop temperatures by 10º. So I check “early and often,” kind of thing. Of all the apps I own, WX is the most reliable and complete. Its Pro section offers 10 distinct seven-day forecast graphs, covering temperature, precipitation, wind direction and speed, humidity and cloud cover. Localized to the nearest NWS station, the data are complete and highly reliable. The precipitation models consistently beat all the others - possibly excepting Dark Sky. Likewise, the Wind Shift plot is dead on. I suppose that the home screen is not the most attracting landing spot. It certainly doesn’t look like most other iOS7 apps, but it’s easy to read and just like the Summary screen, give me the information I want at a glance. Well worth owning.
