The standard. If you are addicted to the English cryptic, and do AZED or Mephisto regularly, and find it cumbersome to travel with a dictionary, this is the one to buy. Sparse and efficient interface, seems to have all the content including "taghairm". Highly commended.

Awesome. Fast, clean and professional. The x-reference feature with the chambers thesaurus is a great. I use it everyday and thoroughly satisfied.

Excellent dictionary. I've had this app for a couple of years now: it is excellent. It never comes up short when I'm looking for a word, it is beautifully designed and presented, and the pronunciation guides are top notch. I deleted OED's expensive effort after a week.

Par Excellence. I finally found a dictionary that provides precise and clear definitions. I am a broad reader and find this app to be the most effective and efficient for all my readings. It syncs your favorite/bookmarked words between your iPhone and iPad. The price at 4.99 is a steal. So many features. This blows away all the free dictionary apps by far. It'd be unwise not to get this app.

What's Wrong With An Attractive and Informative Icon?. I may be petty, but I'm going to pan every app that follows John Ive's knuckledragging example and "flattens" their icon. This is not my all time favorite dictionary (and I use several regularly) but it's very close to the top of my list.

This. It’s pretty confusing that such an elegant masterpiece has not been well-known in decades. As an ESL learner, it took me a while to find a concisely defined dictionary using relatively simple vocabulary. The vast majority of famous contemporary dictionaries tend to become wordy in terms of definitions. But the Chambers has rid me of that kind of annoyance. Three years ago, I purchased the same app on the google play store. And now I'm more than happy to invest in it again.

no example sentence whatsoever. GUI is fine. It os the same as the free wordweb app GUI. The content is subpar in my opinion. Absolutely no example sentences. This dictionary is a definite no for English learns.

Great Dictionary!. This Chambers app is an amazing app, like all of Word Webs. Here are my recommendations to the developer for mobile: (1) Just as with your desktop software, let you switch in tabs between all the dictionaries and thesauruses you purchase. That is a critical feature in your desktop applications and increases their value and makes it sensible to buy ALL your dictionaries. This would be a moneymaker for WordWeb and great for users. (2) Why not sell your other desktop dictionaries on mobile? No work and more revenue, and your users would benefit. Here is my recommendation regarding Desktop: (1) Please make the spacing and placement of lines of text consistent as one switches between the tabs of WordWeb books. (2) Please use MacOS built-in support for graphics card acceleration for more natural resizing on the wide variety of displays. It looks really bad as you resize and for a business to purchase this app for this users, that raises questions of longevity.

Be careful of spelling. This is an adequate dictionary, no doubt, but care should be used with its spelling preferences. In particular, in many cases it presents the usage of a _minority_ of those for whom English is their first language as the principle spelling, which could mislead the reader.

Best English Language Dictionary Ever. Clear, concise, and occasionally hilarious, the Chambers is the best English dictionary in existence. I’ve bought it in several forms over the years and this app does it justice.

Best English Dictionary App. By far the best I have tried—the interface is both fast and pleasant, and offers powerful search features that should be standard on any dictionary application (including wildcard, partial matches, homonyms, etc.). This is the closest I have come to enjoying an English dictionary app more than its printed version. For French dictionaries, the Dixel app definitely brings dictionaries in the era of the portable computer.

Great piece of work!. I've tried all the dictionary apps, and this one is my new favorite. It has all the features of the other good apps combined: typing letters in the search box brings up matching words immediately; tapping a word in one definition brings you to the definition of THAT word; there's an immense vocabulary on tap; there's a standard pronunciation key, parts of speech, etymologies, and most importantly, very clear definitions. The app makes intelligent suggestions about alternative spellings or related words. A book I was reading mentioned the word "chafron." I looked it up but found no match. Then I noticed a drop-down list of suggested alternatives on the right, one of which was "chaffron." Tapping this brought me to the definition of "chamfron," for which chaffron is an alternative, and which I knew from the context was the word I was looking for. I haven't run into any of the "light-hearted" definitions yet, but the ones I've seen - and the app has all of the "test words" I try in a new dictionary - have been spot-on. This dictionary app, for me, is worth every penny.

Some improvements are in order. For $4.99, there should be a thesaurus, audio pronunciations, voice search, and example sentences.

The Best!!!. I got all dictionaries but vey impressed with this one. One of my best ones. It's the Best in term we go with the price and content.

Superb app. Chambers has become my go-to dictionary for everyday use, both online and in print. It seems to have more entries than American Heritage, Merriam-Webster's Collegiate, or the Oxford American Dictionary, and its definitions are often simpler and almost always at least as precise. The app is easy to use, completely functional even with relatively old versions of iOS, and uncluttered by annoying pop-up ads and banners—and it's free. What's not to like? Highly recommended.

An App I use constantly.... ...but then I am a cruciverbal tragic. But seriously. This is a fine implementation of the principal dictionary used by crossword compilers. Some would consider it cheating, but needs must. I was also very impressed with the speed with which the developer produced an update when a small iOS8 glitch appeared. If you love words, or do crosswords, or play Scrabble - this is the App for you.

Where is random word feature?. Love chambers dictionary and its crisp definitions. But where is the random work feature for the app? Or even word of the day feature?

Very useful. This dictionary compares very well both in price and content. Does not have the many of the modern english words (e.g. tweet [as in twitter] or muggle [as in Harry Potter]) and fails to identify Oberon as a moon of Uranus. One short fall is the complete lack of output - you cannot copy paste or send anywhere.

Worth the wait and the money. At last! Crossword enthusiasts and lovers of words will be delighted. Expensive but worth it for the content. It is simple, clean, fast, good layout. The search facility is excellent- as a substitute for page-flicking it makes it very easy to find elusive words -it even tempts crossword-solvers to cross the boundary into cheating! The Chambers Dictionary is second to none -all we need now is Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable. Excellent addition to iPhone Apps.

Not bad. Doesn't always show plural words. I use this to play scrabble and I need to be able to check what the plural form of some not so common words are.

Great. Having had the paper version for over 30 years am thrilled with this app. Like the cross reference function. The only complaint is the colour of the icon is almost identical to their thesaurus app. Would be handy if they were different colours, or at least very different reds.

Very useful. Chambers is one of the oldest dictionary companies and this dictionary includes many words you won't find in similar dictionaries, especially from non-English (Scottish, US, Aust) English and older words. Definitions are short but adequate. The software has wildcard and hyperlinking features. Definitely useful as a second dictionary. The printed version is a little bigger than the concise Oxford or Collins.

Perhaps only good for crossword lovers. Very simple short explanations; No sample sentences. I have never tried the paper version of this dictionary before.

Impressive coverage & great software. This is easily the best digital dictionary I've ever used. The wildcard searching is fantastic. The definitions are well laid out. The content is very broad; Chambers are famous for their breadth of definitions. Only one tiny gripe; by default, vulgar words are excluded. There's a preferences option to turn them on. I like my dictionaries warts and all by default. I suspect the developers did this to keep Apple happy, so it's a minor quibble.

Finally, the best English dictionary with the best interface. The Chambers Dictionary is the dictionary I grew up with, it has by far the clearest and most detailed definitions, inluding the odd bit of wit. On both Palm and Pocket PC the Chambers had a horrible interface, finally on the iPhone they have made up for it all. The search functionality is amazing. I just hope I don't stop referring to the hardcover edition, this is one of the great English dictionaries

Definitely the best. This dictionary does everything. The coverage is more than comprehensive and the etymologies especially well done. Wouldn't be without it.

a great help. I’m an editor and own a lot of dictionaries, printed and digital. Chambers for iOS is the one I now use most often — at least a dozen times a day. And, even obscure errors are fixed once reported.

Superb. This is a superb iPad dictionary in my view. I tried a few free dictionaries, and the best one was the word press one. But this Chambers one is even better. It is amazing that you can get so much knowledge and history in one place for only 7.99. I only wish that when the app is booted that it would automatically clear the search field and bring up the keyboard. It's very tedious to have to type the same two or three clicks to clear the previous word and bring up the keyboard.
