Longplay App Description & Overview

What is longplay app? Do you have an album collection of dozens to thousands of albums? Does the next song of an album already start playing in your head when one finishes? Longplay is for you.

Longplay presents a beautiful view of the album artworks of the (near) complete albums in your music collection. It let's you rediscover forgotten favorites or just play the music you love, and explore it with various smart sort options:

- Orderliness: by artist, then by album
- Addiction: by amount of time spent listening
- Brightness: by the primary colour of the album artwork
- Negligence: by the time it’s been since you’ve last listened to the album, weighted by the rating
- Recency: by date added
- Memory: by last played
- Stars: by the rating you’ve provided for each song
- Random: a new order, every time you tap it

You can organize your albums into collections, which sync across your devices.

Infinite album shuffle let's you stay in the flow, with smart shuffle depending on your current collection or sort order.

It comes with a home screen widget that displays the top albums by your nominated sort order. On the larger widget, tap an album to play it, on the smallest it doubles as a "Feeling lucky" button to start playback of one of them.

It supports CarPlay, Siri, and Shortcuts.

It works well with Apple Music, music purchased from iTunes or synced manually.

---
Important: Longplay does not ship with any music included, it is instead a player for your music library - be it from Apple Music, iTunes or your synced music. It provides a filtered view of just the albums of which you have all or most of the songs, as well as your playlists; thus focussing on your album collection without any singles or albums where you only have very few songs.
---

Tap an item to play (or pause). Long tap for additional options, such as adding to your album queue or to a collection.

It works with libraries big and small, and besides regular albums it also handles compilation albums and playlists.

Comes with Shortcuts actions to play a random top album by a defined sort order, or a random album, optionally filtered by artist or genre. All of that with Longplay's logic that makes sure that it's an album for which you have all or most songs.

It is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Fully VoiceOver accessible.

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

It showed promise. This application has a good concept but, it doesn’t show all of my music.

Bad performance with large libraries. This app is so slow as to be unusable. I’ve *never* been able to make it play a single album on AirPlay, but it’s sometimes happy to mistakenly play one locally if my finger brushes against the screen. (My personal record is *three times* last night!) The UI looks pretty when the app finally stops “Updating albums…”—it’s a long delay every time—and then I can only pick an album from the UI to play manually on Apple Music—and *then* the app updates its UI to show that, yes, yes, that album is now playing. It’s something, but not much. I have a very large music library music library. That may cause my problems, but the problems are awful. I just tried again to play an album, gave it plenty of time, but nothing. I switched apps and wrote this review, and still nothing. I just went back and the app is back to “Updating albums…”.

What is happening?!?!?!. This app used to rock but now the widget, even after the latest update, still has problems showing the album artwork. It’s a shame because this app was one of my favorite apps. 😞

Track Listing. I love the simplicity but an album’s track listing is essential. Perhaps an addition to the long press menu?

Fantastic app. This is a great app for people who like to listen to whole albums. I got this app shortly after it launched and it just keeps getting better with updates!

Good Not Great. Just downloaded, and like the interface and more ways to sort, but once I click an album, I can’t see the track list. It’s hard to know what song will be up next, or songs that are missing from the original album in my library. Add these feat, and this app could be great.

One request .... Nice looking app. I was hoping that there would be a way to have to shuffle albums randomly. I’ve been looking for an app that does that for years.

Good replacement for my old Smart Playlists. I used to use Smart Playlists to accomplish what Longplay does. The most irreplaceable one on Apple Music has been my old Neglected playlist which automatically included albums I hadn’t listed to in a while. Longplay does a great job of filling that role while keeping the interface really simply and making it easy to get in and pick an album without too much fuss. If I could make one feature request, I’d like to see a toggle added to exclude Holiday/Christmas albums.

The right idea. My apple music library is small, mainly because of the LACK of an interface like this one. If this scales well to large music libraries, apple should just give up and buy this app and the dev team and make it the default way to browse apple music.

Solves a problem I didn’t know I had. This app helps me to rediscover music I’ve neglected on a daily basis. I love the new widget which makes it essentially the “I’m freely lucky” button of my music collection. One feature suggestion: let me omit certain albums from long play’s display. I have a fair amount of classic albums and generally, if I’m in the app, that’s not the music I’m looking for. I’d love to omit all classical music, and some other albums that I frankly never want to hear. Overall, great app!

Great, but needs a couple of extra features. I hate how Apple Music/streaming culture has led me to litter my library with individual songs from artists I generally don’t like and care about. This app is fantastic in that it filters out the trash and brings you only the album — which is a shorthand for music that actually matters. All good and definitely worth the money (could easily charge that yearly, and should, maybe!). However, I would want to see a “Play Next” & “Play Later” addition. Often I’m already playing music from the Apple Music app, and browsing Longplay I’d want to be able to add to that day’s list. Also a “show album in Apple Music” button would be great — ie a link back to the same album in Apple Music where you could then delete, etc.

I’m re-discovering music I forgot I had. Got this on a recommendation from someone on Mastodon, and it’s a really novel way of reconnecting with your music library by putting everything on display all at once. Artwork, not text. Plus: sorting based on “Addiction”, “Brightness”, “Negligence” etc. It’s a really unique _album_ based approach. Loving it. Another plus: I found one reproducible crash almost immediately after purchase, which the developer fixed nearly overnight. Overall, well worth it. Really enjoying this app.

When all I want is to play a random album at work. Apple Shortcuts can no longer handle searching through my library, picking a random song, and then getting the album from that. Longplay has shortcut support and simplified the shortcut to just playing a random album through Longplay. I owe this app my productivity.

Inspired. I don’t often spend money on apps, but this one is worth the $4! I’ve always preferred to listen to whole albums, and this makes it so much easier to browse them. Beautiful!

Nice but LIMITED. Show tracks? No. Repeat track? No. Skip a track? No. Volume control? No. Play albums. Yup.

Perfect re-discovery app. This app is super simple: pick the filter you want, then rediscover the music that’s in there. I love that it’s not trying to replace the entire Music app - it’s focused on helping me find albums that I’d forgotten in my library. Super, super worth your time!

Great start, more capability should be added. Great for viewing and rediscovering your albums. Some additional features would be very useful, such as seeing what tracks are on an album and what trackers are currently playing. Other now playing controls would also be useful, such as skip or go back, etc. —- Updating review: you can see the usual now playing screen in the Apple Music app, which I didn’t realize initially. That helps!

Not great. I would get refund if possible. There needs to be a way to view and play individual songs. There also need to be a tree for easier searching by alphabet. Then when you click on the artist you get the albums. My collection is large and I have to scroll for a week to get to an album I want. It was inexpensive so I gave it a try. The author seems to care about his product so maybe in time it will improve. Right now it’s only worth it with small libraries. I would stick with Soor or Marvis Pro for now.

Didn't know what I've been missing. Love this app. Old enough to have had an album collection but didn't realize how much I missed flipping through albums to decide what to play. This app comes as close to that experience as you're going to get on a digital device --thanks!

Excellent, could be perfect!. Love the app, especially the minimalism. It’s refreshing to simply see your (good) albums! A couple of options missing that would help make it perfect: 1) option to open album in Apple Music (so we can e.g. delete it from the library, or browse artist for more albums etc) 2) add album to Play next or Play last.

Interesting holistic view of my large non-Apple Music collection. Dev fixed bug within a couple days of first review and app works nice and smooth now. Going to use this app to find some albums I haven’t listened to in a while. ——— App always crashes after about 45 seconds. Looks like it’s trying to build the brightness option and fails halfway through the progress bar. Never got to use this newly purchased app. Happy to change review if it starts working.

Hard to find info. I’ve had the app for a few weeks and find it hard to use - find stuff to listen to or search for albums or artists. I still haven’t found a way to search for specific albums. I didn’t know that there was a screen by swiping right to see ordering, sorting, and settings. I get the desire to have a simplified UI but a user shouldn’t accidentally stumble upon the settings because they randomly swiped. It should be clear where to control things.

Very focused. Installed instantly at <3 MB, almost no set-up, and I’m right into my music! Easily worth trying at $3 and almost no learning curve

Had problems at first, but works fine.. I had a problem initially setting up on an ipad (couldn’t see the album wall icon). I set it up on iphone and it works now on ipad too. Pilot error maybe. I dunno.

Essential. Absolutely gorgeous app. I love it how the album covers change size and slide around without leaving the page which gives it a wonderful tactile feeling of browsing through a record collection. And most importantly, the way it filters out singles is exactly what I need. I’m a long-time user of Apple Music with a large collection of albums and dozens of personal playlists (which forced me to add singles to my library in the early days), so browsing through my albums is currently a mess, but with this app, it’s a breath of fresh air. Highly recommended.

Love it. It’s a pleasure to rediscover my album collection again

Beautiful and lean. Minimalist graphical interface: scroll, tap, music. A beauty to use, to look at, and to listen to.

Gorgeous and minimal. For the times where you don’t want to think too much but just wanna play an album, maybe one that you love or a new one at random. I think it’s an awesome app, a little pricey but what’s the price of a cup of coffee for something that will bring you hours of fun.
