Opticians, or those who work with the fitting and dispensation of eye glasses, and ophthalmic dispensers, or those who work with contact lenses, can earn voluntary professional certification. Professional certification is earned through an exam, and such a professional designation can help an optician demonstrate their knowledge, skills and dedication to the career field. While certification is voluntary, many employers require their opticians and ophthalmic dispensers to be certified prior to being hired.
Certification exams for opticians are offered by the American Board of Opticianry (ABO), while certification exams for ophthalmic dispensers are offered by the National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE). Both organizations are non-profit certifying bodies whose programs are certified by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies. Each organization has developed a set of standards that opticians and ophthalmic dispensers must meet in order to earn initial certification. In addition, both organizations have requirements for continuing education as part of the recertification process. The ABO exam is called the National Opticianry Competency Exam (NOCE). The NCLE exam is called the Contact Lens Registry Examination (CLRE).
Each exam includes 125 multiple-choice questions, and two-and-a-half hours are given for exam completion.
The NOCE exam is broken down as follows:
- Fitting and dispensing glasses and other devices, patient history, taking measurements and evaluation of previous or current eyewear (53%)
- Analyzing and interpreting prescriptions to understand patient needs and ensure the prescription is correct (31%)
- Use of standard ophthalmic equipment, instruments and tools, including operation and routine maintenance (16%).

This app is a joke. Please do not bother with this app. Listen to all the bad reviews because they are the only things right in this test prep. Not happy with the money I wasted Andre-it regret the time I have wasted!
Bad app. The app won’t even load/ open
What a waste. I downloaded this app, and the first few modules seemed interesting so I upgraded to the paid version...boy was that the wrong move. Several of the modules aren’t even related to optics (perhaps genetics instead?). Half the questions have the same answer repeated multiple times...I sent several emails to the developer with no response. Don’t waste your time, energy or money on this app.
Won’t load. App will not open anymore. Please fix.
Okay. Has some good info but not a good attention to details. The questions can be set up where there is two correct answers and if you select the wrong one you are incorrect. When you get the the later test questions they are set up very strangely. If you spend $7 you would think that the app has been edited thoroughly.
Not worth your money. I know it was only $7, but I struggled with whether or not purchasing this app or a different one would be more with my money. The free version of this app was wonderful. But anything after it is just a bunch of nonsense. It doesn’t review anything that will be on your test after chapter 6. I wish there had been a review to tell me that before I bought it. I’ll be testing for the ABO Nov. 11, and I’ve checked with other people who have never seen any of the stuff in the app for sections 7-whatever. The first 6 sections and the terminology were awesome, but honestly I was able to get all the information on quizlet and retain the Information better.
Not for Opticianry. I am not sure this is actual for Opticianry.
