Nihongo - Japanese Dictionary App Description & Overview

What is nihongo - japanese dictionary app? Nihongo is an offline Japanese dictionary, flashcard app, and reading assistant, designed to make the best use of the time you dedicate to studying Japanese.

Our dictionary is made to find what you're looking for fast, with the words Japanese speakers actually use at the top of every search result, and every word marked as "common", "uncommon", or "rare".

"Clippings", our reading assistant, is what makes Nihongo stand apart from other dictionaries. Paste in Japanese text from a website, email, an eBook, or anywhere else, and we'll add furigana or romaji to every word. We also enable you to tap on any word to see its definition. This will truly change the way you read Japanese. And now, you can get the same experience right in Safari using our Safari extension.

Personal experience (as well as a good deal of research in second-language acquisition) has shown us that the words that you're most likely to remember are the words that you're encountering naturally. To this end Nihongo automatically draws from your search history and clippings to compile flashcard decks filled with words for which you already have context. This makes it easy to study both the words you looked up during Japanese class, and those that appear in your favorite song or videogame. And by adding notes to the back of flashcards you can further connect each vocabulary word to your personal contextual understanding.

Kanji flashcards prompt you to draw the missing kanji from the words you're studying, creating stronger connections between the characters and their real-world use. Built-in kanji decks give you 2 or 3 key words to study for each kanji.

This app is only possible because of the JMDict (edrdg.org) and Tatoeba (tatoeba.org) projects. I highly encourage you to support these incredible projects that make apps like Nihongo possible!

Still a great App. I have been using this dictionary for years and it’s only gotten better so far. On top of the offline compatibility, flash cards and wealth of information available, more has been added that is a welcome addition. These include stroke order animations for Kanji, a kanji scanner through the camera, and even just playing audio of the word when seeing it on a flash card. These additions only reaffirm to me that this is the best Japanese dictionary bar none. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to better their Japanese proficiency.

Fantastic and essential. I’ve tried many Japanese apps and I’ve found this to be incredibly useful and has some unique helpful features, e.g. the “contained words” feature which helps breakdown compound kanji. The subtle kanji practice feature when I discovered was an unexpected delight and is fantastic. The clippings and translate feature is great. The developer cares and listens. I requested a font size adjustment feature in translation and it was delivered, and it’s very useful. Can’t recommend this app high enough. For serious students, absolutely worth every penny. Update: in future, would be great if it had handwriting support for input also.

Brilliant. とてもいいですね。多分一番いい辞書です。iPadの中に、五辞書があります。この辞書は便利です。皆さん頑張ってください。

好き!. Very helpful!

Awesome!. The clippings feature in this app is incredible. I've been using it to learn Japanese songs. I just dump the song lyrics into the clippings section, learn the words from the generated flash cards and then double check myself back in the clippings. It removes the need of copying and pasting each word into a dictionary or Google Translate.

Best Japanese dictionary in the App Store. Hands down this is the best Japanese dictionary in the App Store. While learning Japanese I have downloaded my fair share of apps to aid in learning and this app has shone out as absolutely one of the best. What I have found particularly useful is knowing how common your search word is and being able to quickly look up verb conjugations. Having your looked up words become flash cards is also great for vocabulary consolidation as well. Look no further if you’re studying Japanese and need a good dictionary!

Most useful dictionary app so far! But.... I love this dictionary. The flash cards are easier to use than any other dictionary I’ve come across, and I adore the clippings section. However, I’ve run into a few bugs. For example, whenever I go to type in the clippings or flash cards it scrolls all the way down to the bottom and I can’t see what I’m typing, which is kind of necessary going from Japanese to English. If this could be fixed I would be thrilled 😁

Go over kanji you've already learnt pls?. Love this app! My go-to flashcard app! However, I would like it better if you could reorder flashcards, and go over words you've already learnt that day. For example, if I learn 10 new kanji a day, I would like to review them in 1 hour, 2 hour, etc, instead of waiting for them to come up in my 'review' the next day. I know you can practise your deck, but since you cannot shuffle the deck, that's not very helpful when you have hundreds of words. I found the pre-installed kanji decks a bit useless but other than that, I really like it!

Brilliant app! Perfect for learning Japanese. As a senior high school student studying Japanese, I can say that this app has already significantly enhanced my learning after just a few hours of exploring and using the app. With it’s refined interface, all the important functions (e.g. radical keyboard) are easy to access and navigate. I also appreciate the example sentences listed under each dictionary search- which cover all the variants of a word.(e.g. plain form, polite form, て form) And yes- the dictionary search works offline too. I’m greatly impressed with the many useful features incorporated in this app- notably the flash card and spoken text features. I’m now considering saving up to purchase a lifetime Pro subscription! Nihongo covers all the bases- I’ve gone ahead and deleted all of my other Japanese dictionary/education apps- even ones I have relied on for years up until now. I would strongly recommend Nihongo for those aiming to expand their vocab; preparing for a trip to Japan; or to simply brush up on old knowledge; students and teachers alike!

Nicely designed but helpful flash cards need a “”free”” trial for 14 days. As the title says, the kanji flash cards for different grades are hidden behind a “free trial” pay wall, we all know what that means. Better to use a different app for anyone else just looking for flash cards.

Excellent Learning Companion. I have been using this app for years now and it’s my favourite Japanese dictionary. The developer has added many new features, and even emailed to let me know a feature I had requested years earlier had been implemented.

Great.. Easy to use. Most info per entry.

Excellent. This app is excellent. The Clippings feature is perfect for translation and reading longer texts. I had been using the "Japanese" app but switched as it hasn't been updated in years. Great choice. This works beautifully.

Promising App but not worth the premium price. There are better apps out there. I was hopeful that Nihongo Pro could replace my three other Jisho apps (imiwa, Midori, Japanese (renzo)). The Midori and Japanese App highlights bookmarked words (saves 2-3 clicks). Japanese App (renzo) allows users to save sample sentences for flashcard review.

Great dictionary. Search results are very intuitive. Best dictionary on the market.

Great study companion. This both a very, very good dictionary (searchable by pronunciation/English too, and now radicals and romaji!) and a great flash cards system to learn new Kanji and words. All you need to know to use this is hiragana. Highly recommended (and I've tried a whole bunch of other apps).

Not worth sub. It’s an okay app that supplements my studies, although it’s not worth the on going cost of a subscription.

Great app!. Very helpful for me especially im studying nihongo. Thank you

Fantastic!. Have been waiting for a comprehensive eng to jp app, my prayers have been answered!

Most obvious need to fix. Most obvious need to fix: Default sorting method should be by frequency/usefulness (currently attributed by circle, diamond, star). Otherwise there's no point in anyone scrolling down that huge results list. Nitpick: Also noticed some matches are shown in light gray, and it's not clear at all what this identifies. Furigana is also occasionally truncated for readings with over 2 characters. Praise: Great direction with this. Especially showing relevant words in kanji entries, the clippings feature, and usefully using people's search history. Keep it up!

One of the best Japanese dictionaries available.. Very beautifully and carefully designed UI. Word look-up is flawless; English, Japanese, or Romanji recognition with instant results. In-sentence usage examples for every word on each page makes studying in context very useful and effortless. Kanji breakdowns are very helpful as well. Anki-style flash cards could be a great tool to some, although I have not used this feature much. The only thing missing I can think of is adding verb and い adjective conjugations. All in all, a wonderful tool I will be using for the foreseeable future. Great job developers.

Amazing. So much effort was put into this application.

Great app, the best one!!. This is the best Japanese dictionary ever!! It would be great to get an iPad version also!!

Great dictionary. Nihongo is a fabulous Japanese, English and romaji language app. It's my go-to dictionary.

Nice App. Everything is fine, but when I type something like "no", the message that takes you to the meaning of the hiragana "no" doesn't work ( It worked before)

Excellent. Great functionality, love the pronunciation for beginners, excellent example sentences.

Great tool for learning Japanese. Love the interface. Clean and easy to use. I'd like it more if we could create our own kanji deck or add certain kanji that we're reviewing into specific decks apart from it being automatically generated. Looking forward to more updates!

Great dictionary/flashcards app!. Simply the best one I saw so far. Some things can be improved and it'd be great to get stroke order for kanji but still even now it's best in terms of UX.

Paid once now a subscription. I bought the app over 2 years ago now I need a subscription to use the features I already paid for?

I love this app!. Nearly every word I type in this app is available. Even slang and colloquial words are in here. As a manga/anime enthusiast and intermediate Japanese learner, this app is a must-have for me. I simply type in a word in Japanese and the app displays all the available translations and phrases that contain that word. In my opinion, this is significantly better than using Google Translate. I don’t like that Google Translate just gives you a one word translation because I don’t feel like I’m learning anything. But with Nihongo Dictionary, nearly every word has a small note that tells you it’s usage and to me this is great because I get to learn more about the nature of the Japanese language. It’s hard for me to explain it, but I strongly recommend trying this app since it’s free and you get the choice to buy the extra stuff later. I use this app everyday and it has not disappointed me. If there’s one thing I would ask the developers is to distinguish verbs that end in the hiragana る between Ichidan and Godan verbs. For example, 着る “to wear” and 切る “to cut” are pronounced “kiru”; however, they do not conjugate the same way. For example, to get the “masu” verb form with Ichidan verbs, drop る and put “masu” so 着る is 着ます (“kiru” to “kimasu”), and to go from Godan to “masu”, change the る to the “i” hiragana line (which is り for this hiragana) and add “masu” so 切る is 切ります(“kiru” to “kirimasu”). I think this could be helpful because verbs that end in る don’t have a definitive way of knowing for sure if the verb is Ichidan or Godan. It could help prevent mistakes in writing and speech. Another thing I would ask the developers (or another developer maybe) is to make a Spanish dictionary similar to Nihongo app. I think it could help Spanish learners tremendously to learning new Spanish vocabulary words and phrases the same way this app has helped me learn new Japanese words and phrases. Overall, Nihongo Dictionary app is fantastic!

Worth a download.. This app is probably one of the most up-to-date Japanese-English dictionaries you can find on iOS. Other apps such as "Japanese" and "imiwa?" may have quite bit more polish on their similarly clean designs (use of negative space, hierarchy, etc.), but they haven't been updated in over a year as of this review. My most favorite feature in this app is iOS 9 multitasking for the iPad. I can browse websites in Japanese, and without switching apps, check out the definition for words I don't know! It's the best! And if I have a more complicated passage, I can just paste it into the "Clippings" feature and break it down even further.

Great program. This is a great program to learn Kanji. It's intuitive to navigate and I highly recommend it.

100 percent worth it. This is the best Japanese English dictionary ever! The clipping function is really useful for learning blocks of texts. I used to look up each word individually and try to piece together the meaning. I was way off! They have lots of sample sentences that really help you to learn how to use each word. Super helpful! Don't worry just buy it you won't be sorry

Best Japanese dictionary app!. I only use free version but its more than enough to assist me in learning Japanese. 最高です!

Great!!. Very useful, and efficient for learning Kanji; I definitely recommend.

It's all of my favorite Japanese resources in one!. But BETTER!!

Excellent. This app is an excellent supplemental resource in my quest to learn Japanese. Highly recommended!

Useful application. Very useful application for Japanese learning students

Great Japanese Dictionary!. Great app! I wish I could copy the words sometimes, but I understand if I cannot for copyright reasons.

useful application. this app is very useful for learning Japanese language

Well executed app. This is very useful for practicing reading vocabulary. It lacks audio, so you will need to supplement it with other tools if you want full spectrum learning. The basic usage is around texts. You paste in a text that you want to know the vocabulary in, or read a text and use the dictionary to look up words. The program will automatically generate a set of cards based on that. It is not clear to me how deep the SRS system is. But works well for the initial introduction of new vocabulary. It would be nice if there was some way to export the cards that have been learned. Also a name dictionary would prevent names like 真由美 from showing up as 3 different words. Even with the above complaints, this is very well executed and worth paying for.

すごい. Great tool for Japanese language! One thing to add is a graph pad to write in Japanese like in the notebook.

日本語 & Chinese. 不思議の話?! 中華語:看見+方法=看法(中)+見方(日) 日本語:見方

Must have Japanese-English App. Highly recommend

amazing dictionary!. great japanese dictionary! :) with many phrases as examples, kanji flashcards, different definitions! I absolutely recommend it!

PERFECT. The PERFECT Japanese language dictionary app. Impossible to overrate. Truly remarkable.

愛します. I love you *smooches

Easy way to make flash cards. I've been wasting my time on other apps handwriting every last one of my flash cards, but on this app I can type in my kanji and it will give me the definitions I need! So far this is my favorite Japanese app :)

Best Japanese dictionary. Previously my favorite Japanese dictionary was "imiwa" however this one far surpasses that. Lovely design and has all the features I need in one app!

Not as good as the competition. Alternative apps(s).. - Do not run with a subscription model - Have incremental search - Are less cluttered visually and have better understanding of typography (especially important in Japanese)

Great Dictionary. Use it daily, and love that it keeps a history and allows you to create flashcards from them. Good, practical examples for most words as well which is very important in Japanese.

Easy to use and actively maintained. Nice uncluttered interface and great features like common/uncommon markings on words and auto vocab lists from pasted text. Looking forward to further updates!

Powerful learning tool!. 大変お世話になりありがとうございました。

Has Potential, but Ultimately Disappoints. I've been trying to learn Japanese as a hobby. I currently don't have enough money to buy a Rosetta Stone lesson, so I decided to learn via English-to-Japanese apps. After looking through several, I chose this one because I saw the flash cards and figured that would be a good way to challenge myself. Well, I was wrong. Not only are there words and supporting particles left out or described in a confusing manner, the flash cards are about as challenging as blinking. They don't help you memorize anything because they don't provide any challenge! All of the answers are correct, there is no point to even having them there. The crowning jewel of bad app design and the last straw for me was how it has been continually crashing and crashing, to the point of being practically unusable. I tried opening the app five times, and the app immediately crashed each time. Fix your app, keep your dictionaries and definitions updated, make a flash card game that actually requires cognitive function, and I will think about paying for the subscription. As of now, I'm deleting it.

Very nice. A very nice app! I can almost always find what I'm looking for quickly. I do wish that it automatically opened to the search field to make things even faster.

Great dictionary. It's a really great dictionary, especially with the new update. Highly recommended.

The Best Japanese Dictionary. I'm blown away at how simple and accurate and useful this app is. It does have some in app purchases but there are no ads, and the premium features are entirely optional. Support this developer! This is how you make an app.

Amazing. This is an amazing app for learning Japanese, and for finding words. The set up is great and it is overall a really cool app👍

Awesome Functionality, A Few Performance Warts. I love the functionality of this app, especially the clippings feature. Unfortunately, I’ve run into a few performance issues on my iPhone 6. Adding new clippings can take several minutes if they are long (such as adding a chapter from a book, a use case referenced on their official site). During this process, the phone is unusable without cancelling the process. You also need to babysit the phone to make sure it doesn’t lock while the clipping is processing. If the phone ends up locking, or if you end up cancelling while adding a new clipping, you need to start the process all over again. There isn’t any indication of how long it will take to add the new clipping either during, or before a new clipping is added. Editing a clipping requires that the entire thing be processed again. It’d be really awesome if the clip processing could be paused and/or done in the background. I’ve also run into performance issues in other parts of the app. Occasionally the app will freeze during the review process and need to be relaunched and there is often a noticeable delay while interacting with menu items that I don’t notice in other apps. This may be related to the number of clippings I have. I hope the app continues to be developed to address these issues. I use it every day, and I’ve recommend it to friends. Some basic graphs and statistics would also be pretty neat, and a few different options on flashcard order would be amazing. I’d love to be able to change the order from the order the words appear in the text to how common the words are, and the other way around. If it is possible to do this already, the functionality isn’t very obvious.

Such an underrated app. Really easy to use, great interface, ability to listen to work pronunciation, and the flash card system is awesome. One request: the ability to review flash cards English side first then flip to Japanese. Thanks for a great app!

Love it!. This app is amazing. I love the flash cards feature and all the example sentences! It is my go-to Japanese dictionary!
