ABC Ninja - The Alphabet Slicing Game for Kids App Description & Overview

What is abc ninja - the alphabet slicing game for kids app? "A great way to give parents a break and let your kid have fun and learn at the same time." - Jen, Kindergarten teacher and mom of three.

I have a confession to make. My son's favorite game was Fruit Ninja and I was getting increasingly frustrated with having my son waste a lot of time on a fun but mindless game while he was still struggling to master his letters.

So I decided to create our very own ABC letters slicing game and to my and my son's delight, he now has a new favorite game where he is having fun and learning at the same time.

My sons skills in letter recognition have dramatically improved since he started playing this game and now I no longer have to feel guilty when I need a five minute break to take care of the laundry or prepare lunch for the kids. I know that they are having fun and that they are learning at the same time.

Warning: Your child will keep begging for your iPhone or iPad after they try this app.

ABC Ninja is an exciting educational game that helps kids rapidly learn their letters by sight, sound, and touch.
The interface is so easy to use that even a 9 month old baby will delight in using this app.

FEATURES:

• Slice your way through all capital letters by name or phonic sounds

• Slice your way through all lower case letters by name or phonic sounds

• You decide what to focus on - turn individual categories ON or OFF from the settings page

• Learn by sight, sound, and touch

• Fun game play, sounds, and animations keep kids engaged

• Dynamic game play adjusts difficulty (the number of letters) automatically based on player skills to keep kids both challenged and entertained vs. getting bored

• Supports 3 difficulty settings: EASY, MEDIUM, or HARD

EASY MODE:
- Max 1 Letter
- Letters move very slowly
- Great for introducing letters

MEDIUM MODE:
- Starts with 1 letter
- Max of 3 letters on screen
- Letters move 30% faster

HARD MODE:
- Starts with 2 letters
- Max of 5 letters on screen
- Letters move even faster
- Letters rotate faster too

Adjust difficulty from settings page.

• Wrong answers do not interfere with gameplay, the child can immediately try again and slice the correct answer (most other games are too slow to keep kids interested by interrupting the gameplay and slowly repeating the desired question)

• Play letters from A to Z or in random order (adjustable from settings page)

• Multi-sensory learning tool - combining audio, voice, and touch

• Want to work on just a few letters? No problem… head to the settings page to turn entire categories or individual letters on and off

• Want to record your own audios? No problem. Just click on the category and record your own letter sounds

• Supports three levels of difficulty

No Sound. I emailed the developers to ask them to fix the sound quite some time ago. No reply. No fix. This app is essentially unusable without sound. And now as I’m typing this review, the text is not visible. I wonder if it will even show up on the review page. Is this their way of not getting any bad reviews people can see?

Sound not working. Can’t play the game with no sound

Educational fruit ninja with less guilt. My two year old LOVES this app and I much prefer the educational value in comparison to fruit ninja. The only wish I had to make it better is a way to know which letters to slice when on mute. Other than that it is adorable with the graphics, and provides data on what let to work on with him. It could easily be done with other concepts like numbers, words, or simple arithmetic. I look forward to new developments.

good but could be better. My 5 year old grandson is having so much trouble just getting his letters. I thought this would be a good tool to get him going. It would be, except he thinks slashing any letter is fine since he doesn't notice any negative reinforcement for hitting the wrong letters. There's a little different sound and color but the letter still looks like its being slashed, and that's all he's looking for. Please modify the game so there is at least the option available that nothing happens when the wrong letter is slashed. It would be so much better for these hard learners.

It’s not working. No sound.. I was hoping to have my son practice listening to sounds but it’s not working. I hope you could fix this. Seems like the intention in creating this app is great but the app itself crashes.

No instructions?. Game opens to letters and no instructions of how to score points or what the letters mean? Just a ninja game? I don't get it. Updated: turned on microphone in settings for app and works great! Much better. Would still be helpful for parents if there was a brief intro or instructions page.

Customizable. The ability to customize which letters appear sets this app apart from other ABC recognition apps. This is an engaging game format to work in lots of repetition if needed, or to move ahead if the child is able.

Great for differentiation. This app is great for new learners and struggling learners alike. I love that I can adjust the settings to help differentiate for each child and that it gives me feedback at the end of each game. The graphics are very appealing and the game keeps their attention for longer than anything else. I love this app and ALL the ninja apps that go along with it!

Ninja ABC. May be geared for 5and under but my 17 year old with multiple learning challenges is excited about it . Letters are large and colorful. The letter movement and varied positioning fit in with her visual difficulties. The immediate repetition of errors is excellent reinforcement definitely a different and fun approach to letter recognition . Thanks for another great Alligator App.

Good Practice. I'm a first grade teacher and this game is great for kids who know most letters. It would be wonderful in the classroom if I could make accounts for specific kids so that they can practice only the letters they know rather than only being able to program one setting. Also, it can be a little confusing. It would be better if they were only looking for a specific letter rather than them shouting out different letters throughout.

Sounds?. Kind of pointless without sound.

Don’t waste your dollar - There’s no sound. My phone is updated, so the lack of sound is the app - not my phone or settings. What is the point of this game if there is no sound? Don’t waste your dollar.

Pretty cool app. My daughter has just begun her alphabet learning, and I foresee this app to be a great learning tool for her. It's pretty basic, the letter gets called out, you slice it. But what I like about all Alligator apps is that they are intuitive for children, and aren't filled with hoops for them to jump through to get to the game. This translates into a true break for mom and dad, even if it is for a couple minutes. Very happy. Now all we need is an angry letters app!

There’s no sound or instructions. There’s no sound or instructions. Just swiping through random letters doesn’t do much.

Perfect- Love It! Makes Learning Fun. My son’s Kindergarten teacher sent home key/sight words printed online on plain pieces of paper for us to cut out with scissors and make into flashcards for home. Wow! How exciting- no color, paper falls apart, no images of the words. He hated doing them, and was not actively learning. He loves fruit ninja, so I tried ABC Ninja, and Fry Words Ninja, worried about the reviews I read here. Tried them both-love them! So took a chance on this version too. It is great. Like fruit ninja concept, but not a flashy arcade game trying to sell upgrades to my six year-old. No advertisements or kid-unfriendly pop-ups. Love how it tracks words you get or have trouble with, sets difficulty levels, sets reading customized lists. Really excited to see his progress with these sets of apps! Exactly what I was looking for - easy to use and focus on the words, no baby images that he has outgrown, really just great!

Settings issue?. I literally just bought this app and when I tried to change the game settings, the app crashed every time.

Disappointing. No sound. No sound. So the app is pointless. I emailed the company right away and still haven’t heard anything back. You should at least stand behind your products even if it was only $1.

Parent settings not working. Hi have been using ABC Ninja for years and have loved using it. However with in the last few months the parent settings to customize letters and sounds has not be working. That tool was amazing and one of the reason I bought the app. Would give it a 5 if that was working properly.

Just downloaded and checked out this new app. It's a fun app for the kid in me. I didn't want to give it to my son to play with. He is enjoying it. One bug to fix: Three-finger parental tap didn't work the first few times I tried it. Reset the phone and seems to work now.

Great educational app!. This app is very colorful and has nice attractive graphics. I think this will be a great educational tool. I'd like to see them add an option for 2, 3, and, 4 letter word as well as numbers. Maybe graphical images of common nouns like those found in their flash card apps would be good also. Then it would be pretty perfect. I noticed that some of the audio doesn't sound equalized for at least the phonics. Some of the sounds come through quite loudly and clearly over the iPad speaker while others are very hard to hear on max volume. Hopefully this issue will be resolved in the next update.

Really like this game but.... I would rate this game a 5, but I don't like how there is not an option to do just lowercase, uppercase, or mixed. It's just mixed, my little girl is just starting out on letter recognition and it gets a little confusing for her.

My 4 year old daughter use this app. My 4 year old daughter use this app daily. It is simple game but helpful for my daughter to identify letters correctly . At the end of each game , there is review of results which provide more insights

Engaging & fun. The kids I work with love this game, & it motivates them to want to work on their letter names and sounds. The main problem I have with it is that the pronunciations of the Q and L sounds are incorrect, so it confuses the kids. The Q should sound like KW, not just like K. It might help to have a speech-language pathologist record the sounds as they should be said (yes-I am a speech-language pathologist). Overall though, I do like the app, but would like it better if the sounds were made correctly.

Excellent for letter recognition!. This is super for letter recognition, what a fun way to practice this skill- I LOVE how it shows exactly which letters the child got correct and which were missed (although of course errors could simply indicate the child needs to work on fine motor skills too!) I love the ability to change between easy, medium or hard for game settings. I also am having the same issue others have had with the phonics options- no matter what I do they won't play. I can get into the settings where the phonics sounds are recorded, but even though they are turned to "on", when I go to press play, the game only announces letter names.

Crashing. I have paid for this app twice and it continues to crash and have no sound on multiple occasions. I do not have problems with any other apps on this iPad

Nothing more then a bubble pop game. This game doesn't ask you to pop certain letters, it doesn't say the names of the alphabet as you pop them, it doesn't let you change the settings without freezing and kicking you out. It is worthless educationally. Download a free bubbles pop game as this will not help your kiddos learn the alphabet.

Just wish. Just wish there was a way to use this as an assessment with my students individually. I enjoy watching them play it but if I could leave them to do it alone and get the results later for each of them would be great even if it did cost a few dollars would be fine.

No teaching. No sound. Single letters pop up there’s no game aspect.

joyful. I love this app for children learning their alphabet. It is tops in the ABC apps since you can choose which letters to appear. I also like the different levels of easy to hard that you can choose since some children are not at the same level in learning. Thank you for this app.

Sound effects too loud. Love the concept and will definitely help with letter names but the phonics is difficult to hear because the chiming sound effects. There is no way to adjust that sound without also adjusting the phonics sound.

Sound not working. Sound not working

Disappointed.. The sound doesn’t work, rendering the game useless. I contacted support with no response.

The BEST helper for letter recognition!. I'm a mom who's installed (and uninstalled) countless alphabet and early reader games. This one is a keeper. Playing off the enormously popular Fruit Ninja, ABC Ninja combines that same style of easy, familiar, and addictive game play with learning. My young son loves the game, and I love hearing him repeat the names of the letters and their sounds as they come into the play. His letter recognition is growing by leaps and bounds -- and I love supporting his kindergarten learning efforts in ways that are fun, rather than a drag. I highly recommend this app!

Love it. We play this with our six month old when he can't quite settle down. Five minutes of watching the letters (and occasionally properly swiping them) does the trick! Works better than Fruit Ninja because the letters move slowly and you can set the game to throw only one at a time. There is a minor bug, which I think happens if you pause the game while touching two places on the screen at once - after you restart, you can't swipe.

No sound. There’s no sound or way to allow access to the microphone either.

Another good app...not totally customizable. What I appreciate about the Alligator apps is the fact that content can be customized and also used in a different language because of the recording feature. This app is missing that capability....maybe in a future update? Otherwise, it works well, is engaging and has numerous settings to meet the needs of different learners.

Disappointed. Just paid for three of these Ninja apps only to see that not one single one has any sound! How do I remedy this? They are absolutely useless if my little man can’t hear anything.

Great little app for learning fun!. Fun game to reinforce learning the alphabet and beginning phonics. Kids are timed in slicing through the alphabet and/or phonics as an ancient ninja. The customization is great in that you can choose the game duration, difficulty level and random playback of the game. Each letter - In uppercase, lowercase and their corresponding sound can be turned on and off for targeting specific sounds or letters....or to grade the app for early learners. The graphics are clean and uncluttered. Definitely recommended.

Crashes. Paid money for this app and wish I could get it back because the app crashes every time I try to change the setting to abc phonics.

Doesn't work. Just letters popping up on screen, the sound doesn't work so you can't actually play the game

Upgrade on our phone was required. I at first rated the app 1 star. I purchased for .99 cents and could not get any sound features to work. After sitting with it for about an hour and troubleshooting we discovered our phone needed an update. After update was finished, game worked perfectly. My son could not be happier. They play this game on their iPads at school. He isn’t the best and has told me he doesn’t understand, so I was excited to know we could practice more at at 🙂 Now we just need to figure out how to share it onto his iPad now that I have downloaded it into my phone. I do see there is family share capabilities up to 6 family members

I sorta like the game. Like I don’t hate it but now I’m in 3rd grade and it’s useless

Doesn’t work. I thought maybe since the previous review was older that this issue would have been resolved but the sound still doesn’t work. Unfortunate because it has the potential to be an awesome learning tool.

Eh. It seems like a good idea but I wish it was a big better. My ENL student gets confused when he slices a letter and the game says a letter that’s different from what he sliced. I agree. It’s good, but could be better.

No sound and crashes. Paid and downloaded. Sound doesn’t work and crashes when I go into settings. Terrible purchase.

Great Slashing Noise!. This is a good app. My son plays a long time and recognizes the letters readily. I have 2 issues, however: (1) the letters float over and behind each other so when he tries to slash the correct letter he also hits the wrong letter. Not fair! (2) letters like p b q, W and M look the same when they rotate all over the place so they should not count as wrong. W's are red or white while M's are green??? And also - the parental guide access only works about 1/3 the time. Another issue is with the phonics portion. The /k/ sound is correct for q c and k, but the answer is only correct for one of those at a time. That is incorrect.

Crashes. The app is crashing when I go into the settings.

No sound. Would be a great app if the sound worked.

Great with a minor change. I just played this with my 3yo. He loved it, but wanted to swipe every letter that popped up because it was fun not because he doesn't know his letters. Maybe if nothing happened when you hit the wrong letter it would discourage kiddies from randomly hitting letters.

Teacher. Great app! I work with kindergarten students who require additional support in letter recognition, etc. Both boys and girls in my intervention groups love working with ABC Ninja. Each student gets to play the 2 minute round by himself. That's a perfect amount of time to have some hands-on time before it gets "too boring." The other students in the small group also keep attention while waiting his/her turn since it's only 2 minutes.

Strange - nearly great. If the idea is for the child to slice the correct letter, then why let them slice all letters? Just change that and this app will be great. Currently it does not teach much.

ABC Ninja. Great app, good for preschoolers, fun and educational. Can practice both letter names, and sounds. Would be better if could turn off ALL names or phonics, instead of just letter by letter.

Learning with fun - a great combination.. Thanks for such a thoughtful app. I plan to use it to help migrants and refugees who are absolute beginners in English.

ABC ninja. This is a great app for struggling kids/students. You can customize the app for those tricky letters that the children have difficulty retaining. 😄

Please ugrade. Would love to use this but cannot customise anymore

Has great potential.. Has great potential. Only needs a few tweaks. Definitely would be good to turn all in a category off with a single swipe. Great for learning letter names and sounds

Great combo for kids. Love this game

Excellent app. Thank you for this educational and fun app. Simple for kids to operate. Great choices in settings for adults to vary letters and practise unknown letters. Children in my Year 1 class are loving it. Year 1 Teacher Australia

Play and Learn. As a kindergarten teacher who wholeheartedly believes in the value of real play, I have been skeptical of the use of technology with young children. However, when my classroom was given 10 iPads as a pilot project, I was thrown headlong into the world of educational apps for children. In trying to select the best ones for use in my classroom, I subscribed to Alligator Apps and have downloaded many of them. This latest one,Letter Ninja, really hits the mark in engaging children in learning the alphabet. My only minor concerns are with z=zee instead of zed, and the serifs on the letters i.e lowercase l and t.

Yes!. Learning that's fun and mimics an all time favourite game. WTG!!!

Love it, but.... I love this app, and my students love it as well! There are a few errors with letter sounds that I correct as my students play. The /r/ should sound more like "rrr", rather than "er". As well, the /o/ should sound like "aw", instead of "uh" like the letter u. If these errors could be corrected, I would give it 5 stars!!

Great game!. I love that you can turn off letters that have not yet been learned. Great little app for students learning or struggling with learning their alphabet!

Useful. I bought this app for my son (7) who had an English (ESL) exam and it helped him learn the letters. He got 100%!

Fun learning tool. Only suggestion is to incorporate the teaching of how to differentiate between upper case and lower case letters.

ABC baby. ABCdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxy and z

Super fun and educational app. I love this app for both my own kids and for my kindergarten students. What a fun way to practise letter recognition. I only wish it had language options as I teach mainly in French. It would be a great way to perfect this app! Thanks for the fun app!

ABC Ninja. Great, FUN app to help young children learn to recognize letter names (both upper- and lowercase letters) and respective sounds. I love how the adult settings allow you to manage which case(s) of respective letter names and/or which sound(s) you decide to focus on learning.

Pre-k. Brilliant for Kids pre-k level

Great learning app!. This app is great for learning letter recognition. It's easy and fun and keeps a kids attention! Love all the apps by this company

Great App!. Great app! The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because children with physical disabilities don't stand a chance at success unless someone else does the swiping for them. Kids live it!

Enjoyable app. My kids enjoy this app. I do however wish there was a way to repeat the sound or letter name command. Since some sounds are close together, a second listen would be useful.

Update please!. It says this app could be slowing down my phone due to outdated software. I love your apps but please update!

Fantastic and educational app. I began using this app with my ESL students and I have found it to be a very good tool to help them learn/practice their alphabet. It's intended for little ones, but it's not too babyish for a tween who is learning the English alphabet.

Boring. Good concept, however I can see it losing a child's interest quickly.

Love it!!. Great app. Please make it available in Spanish for my dual language kids.

Fun and educational. This is a fun and easy game for kids whose letter recognition is good but whose fine motor skills aren't awesome.

Any way you slice it, it's a winner!. After reviewing this app, I am confident the students in my abc group will learn letter names from using this app. It's a fun way of learning without feeling like work!

Fun!. I used this app with Kindergarteners and they loved it. Both the boys and girls played.

Pros and Con. In the limited time I've used this app (I'm a teacher), I think it is great for helping students practice letter ID. Unfortunately the phonics aspect of the game acts a bit strange. The sounds that the game announces aren't accurate. They don't always match the letters and occasionally sound like the letter name instead of sounds. That reduces the usefulness of the app.

Limited Fun. Great concept but limited playability.

Teacher. My kindergartner a love this! I would LOVE to see an extension of this where the caller could then call the letters out by saying the Sound...then...I would love to see a version with Sight Words so my First Graders could play.

School Setting. My students really enjoy this app and I love that you can customize it!

Simple and accomplished. Any app from this company never fails to meet my expectations. Well done, again. It held my daughter's attention and improved her recognition skills in record time!

Great game. My daughter loves this game. It's educational, and I can hand the phone over to her and not have to help her with it. That means I can get some work done while she's busy and she feels like a big girl.

Fun. My three year old loves it! I do wonder how much he's grasping the letters, though. He likes to just swipe without figuring out which is correct.

Love it. Great app sometimes I just need a educational game while at the grocery store to keep the little one entertained.

Cool!. This is. Really fun app. I will use it with many kiddos, including the grandkids. I like the visuals, the sounds, the eye-hand skills, and the sound-symbol pairing.

Very cool. My son loves this app. Great learning tool.

ABC Ninja. I love, love, love that I can select what letters to focus on! Great app for teachers of special needs students.

Great way to practice letters and sounds. Great app. One suggestion would be to fix the phonics sound for "q" it is confusing as most teach the sound as "qua" not "k" as in this game. Overall this teacher mom gives two thumbs up!

Ninjatastic!. This game is so much fun for my three-yr-old! He loves slashing the letters and adding extra sound effects as he goes. This app is very motivational, especially for Ninja loving boys. I'd love to see numerals added, also.

Great!. I love the sounds, colors, speed and customizability. Great app!

A OK.. This app is fun for my daughter to review letter recognition (she is stumbling with a few similar letters like B,D,Q,P.) It does not run on her ipod touch (I think second or third generation?). It says no updates are available for the touch so I expect this game will not be something we can use much since my phone stays with me.

A five star app. A five star app. My granddaughters love this fast moving app. Keeps them on their toes. What fun

ABC Ninja. Volunteering with folks on the autism spectrum is my love. Apps are great tools but often seem aimed at the very young. What about adults who are just learning letters, articulation, to read? Finally some apps are bridging the chasms. This is one of them. Thank you, thanking you!

Great app for visual discrimination and letter identification!!. This is a great app for visual discrimination and letter identification!

Tons of Fun. My son loves this app! I like how I can control uppercase, lowercase, and sounds. Allows him to be successful while building his skills.

Love it!. I love using this app in my class and my 5 year old loves it too!

Confused. So this app is good I guess I just don't know what to do I think it could be much better with some instructions deleting this app after I'm done

When do you actually get to do phonics?. I changed the settings to hard and played through a few rounds of letter recognition and never got any phonics. I am looking at apps for my niece. But this would bore her to tears. She's in the first grade and already knows her letters. I was so hopeful after reading the reviews, but was extremely disappointed it after the download.
