Mona 7 for Mastodon App Reviews

Best Mastodon Client. This is my favorite Mastodon client. I was a huge fan of Spring for Twitter, and was so happy to see this dev carryover to Mastodon. Selfishly I hope they someday make a Bluesky app since I’m not a regular Mastodon user.

Shady practices. Developer already has an app called Mona, which was offered for flat fee purchases to have all the features. Cool! But suddenly there’s a brand new app where your purchase is non-existent and requires a subscription. No wonder the dev abandoned the older app. Overall kinda shady, not paying you for features in a “new” app that I had in the now never-to-be-updated again original app. Will just use Feditext instead 👍

Cash grab. Such a cash grab. They already had Mona 6 and now they are making it a subscription unless you had the previous version's upgrade.

This app has real problems. I saw the buzz around this new app and I figured I would try it out to see what improvements it offers over the previous versions. The first thing I noticed is that even with this latest update, many of the icons from the last version are missing. I feel like the developer must think that nobody uses these ( "Has lots of icons? Check!" ). But imagine if you were used to using one icon and now that no longer exists and you lose time trying to find it. It's these types of design considerations that are myriad in this app: the complicated UI views on the Mac are extremely confusing: the sidebar turns into a horizontal bar when you "divide the window". What ever happened to just "colunms". Depending on your view, you get random and unpredictable menubar preferences. Then the pricing is a mess. Is it subscription or is it a one time purchase? How do I know if I have Mona Pro Ultra? What happened to Mona 6? What is Mona Classic? I think this app may be for folks who are enormously invested in a single product and who have time to learn all of the idiosyncrasies of a strongly opinionated app. I am definitely thankful that I was able to try this app before purchasing, because I just don't have the time to be able to unravel this.

Bait and switch. I really loved this app, and I understand a developer needs to make money. But I feel like this was a bait and switch to sell a lifetime subscription option and then make a new app entirely. Not very happy.

Best Mastodon app yet. Mona seems to work perfectly across all my devices. I applaud the developer’s one-time payment upgrade from version 6 Ultra users. I have noticed that with version 7, Mona spontaneously appears under the desktop Recent Items menu even though it has not been launched after clearing that menu.

Top Tier. This app makes Mastodon even better. I love the filter feature, where you can temporarily hide boosts, replies, etc to get a simpler feed without having to change settings person by person.

The Best Mastodon App Updated For Apple’s New OSes. If you’ve ever used Mona before this is a new version of the same app with enhancements, support for Apple’s new design language, and a slightly newer pricing model. I have tried a lot of Mastodon clients and this is far and away my favorite. It also offers intuitive functionality with a robust feature set.

Same Old Bugs, New Purchase. It has the same bugs and lack of features as Mona 6, but it’s a new purchase, to get around the old version’s lifetime purchase option, named “Mona Pro Max”. There’s no guarantee version 6, the older version, will be maintained or supported any longer or if so for how long, so not purchasing 7 isn’t necessarily an option, especially when the developer has made it clear that the discounted one-time purchase of 7 for 6-purchasers *is* temporary. This is all very disingenuous and scummy from the developer. They’ve made zero effort to address any of the existing bugs or lack of features but have changed the revenue model to be more hostile to their customers. Shameful and untrustworthy. Examples of a bugs/missing features: 1. the number indicating replies to a post and the actual replies displayed is off, usually the actual replies displayed are fewer than the number indicates, and there *are* replies that aren’t loaded/displayed. Other clients do display the replies correctly but no version of Mona does. 2. Private notes, mutes/filters and scroll/read positions are only saved in the app locally but not in the server. If you happened to have both Mona 6 and 7, for evaluation purposes, or Mona and another app because Mona lacks the essential features the other app has, these app-only features stand out. I think there’s little reason to purchase Mona 7.

No Reason for New Version. Paid for previous version. This one is no different. Won’t be fooled twice for when Mona 8 comes out.

not worth subscribing. the biggest attraction of mona was that it was a one-time purchase rather than a subscription model. the new version is now a subscription, meanwhile the original remains buggy and the new one contains many of the same bugs. developer burned all my trust, i’m looking at other clients now.

Bait and switch - Never again will I trust this developer or recommend their apps.. I have been a user of Mona and the now-defunct Spring for years. It’s a great app and I have enjoyed the customization and top-notch user experience. I liked Mona enough to pay for Mona Pro Max, a one-time purchase at the top tier of the pricing for this app. Fast forward to today, when the developer has launched a new version of Mona updated for the new iOS design language. Guess what? The app now requires a subscription or a hefty “one time purchase” option for Mona Pro Max purchasers at $19.99, which is over double the price I already paid for Mona Pro Max. It’s even framed as a “discount” for existing Pro Max users, which is laughable. I already paid “one time” and now you’re offering a new “one time” purchase at over double the price, and now I know that there is no such thing as “one time” pricing with this developer. They’ll simply bump the version number and shake me down for more money. I understand that it’s not easy for an indie developer to make money without an effective monetization strategy, but choosing a poor strategy is the developer’s fault, not the user’s. They knew full well that they were charging a one-time fee, and are now trying to extort additional funds from loyal and happy users. It’s frankly insulting. Well, it’s not going to work on me. While twenty bucks isn’t all that much money in the grand scheme of things, the complete violation of trust and deceptive practices are enough for me to never purchase or use any apps from this developer ever again. They’ve sent a clear message to their user base — deal with shakedowns and lies, or go away. So, here is my clear message back — I’m gone. Good luck winning over new customers when they read the inevitable mountain of one star reviews that you’re going to earn.

Best mastodon client. This is a full featured, responsive, and infinitely customizable mastodon client. I’ve used every client available, and this is hands down my favorite. I happily paid for the new version when it was available, because good apps by indie developers are worth spending money on. And this developer is quick to respond to issues and bug reports.

Awesome Mastodon Client, fair pricing. Mona 7 extends the already great Mona 6 with a bunch of very nice features. I love how it’s still a one time purchase so I can freely upgrade whenever I feel it’s justified

Best all-round Mastodon client. The app is super responsive across both iOS and macOS, and it’s immensely customizable. Not that you need to customize it - it looks great out of the box - but if you like tweaking every color and every detail, then it’s all there for you to work with.

No More Dark Red Icon. This app is easily the most customizable Mastodon app available, with the most features added, compared to a number of other popular Mastodon apps. This seems to continue on through the iOS 26 liquid glass features, although I am sad that the red and dark red icons are no longer there. I guess purple is OK, but I really like the red theme better. Five stars.

User Beware!. Dev did a bait and switch and the Mona lifetime license doesn’t transfer over between updates. Avoid this one at all costs!

Great UI but regression bugs. This is a great new release especially with UI changes but contains regressions when quoting posts and other sharp edges. I have raised this but no feedback and no fixes. If you use Akkoma or Pleroma instances, I’d stick with or use Mona 6.

Good app but features that should not be paid are paid. I like this app but I don’t like how certain features such as having multiple accounts requires you to pay

Truly a great app. The only change I would like to see is that when translating a post, have the translated text first. Having the original language first does not make sense-we already know I can’t read it! An excellent app otherwise-I can highly recommended.
