Update issue. My scores list low includes my most recent game no matter how many guesses. Otherwise this is a great app. Once fixed I will give 5 stars.

Challenge a friend. Can you please provide directions on how to play the game against another remotely. When a hit the button it asks for a word but then ends. How do I identify who I’d like to play and invite them to play. Thanks

Not like the original paper version. There’s no way to cross out the letters that you know aren’t in the word and no way to circle or list the letters that you know are in the word, which makes it much more difficult to play.

Suggestion. What did you do to the yellow letter option for maybe? I was using that! All the time! Lowered my ranking. Hope you’ll bring the yellow back.

New improvements. Thanks for allowing us to color the letters in the guesses and the keyboard. I really enjoy this game. It has the right level of challenge for me, and allows others to make it harder if they want to.

Word games. Probably better than that other word game.

“Yellow for Maybe” Feature Disappeared After Update. I reduced my rating to 1 star because my most recent word was “Waxing” which is a 6-letter word. The only way I found out that was the word was by using the Hint button because, since the words are only supposed to have 5 letters, I wasn’t even able to key in the correct word. I could only enter “waxin” which, of course, is “NOT A REAL WORD.” ########## EARLIER REVIEW: I’ve been enjoying this game but already had 3 wishes for improvements: - Wanted a different color to designate double-used letters in harder levels; - Wanted no double-used letters in the lowest level, which isn’t supposed to have any; and - Wanted more words to solve for. However, since the latest update, not only is there no special color for double letters, now we no longer have the yellow designation to indicate possible letters. This is a step backward, so I’m giving a lower rating than I would have before the update. [lYellow for maybe” was reinstated, so I added a star.] The update that was supposed to filter out double letters where they don’t belong did not work. I’ve come across 2 or 3 with double letters in the Easy section, and just now my word turned out to be “MOMMY.” Please remove words with double letters from the Easy list, consider adding an additional color, or some other indicator to designate a double-used letter.

Done right!. This version has the best selection of features, like the classic game from the 1950s. VERY satisfying.

No turn by turn for multiplayer??. Looking for Jotto online multiplayer that is turn by turn. No fun to send a word to a friend and let them do things on their own. Much more fun to do turn by turn.

Too Quick to Cost Money. We played Jotto for years when we camped and Loved it! I was over the moon when my daughter sent me this game, BUT, almost immediately they wanted to charge to upgrade. I accidentally bypassed the instructions, but knowing how to play, I surged ahead. Once I used up hints, I was unable to get more help without paying. I will continue playing the game trying to see what I am doing wrong and why I can’t play against her, but if app is a money-grabber I am done.

Played this game 70 years ago. With my aunt.. Fun game. Harder than Wordle

Great mind game. I play Jotto every night and have for years. I used to play ‘Mastermind’ as a kid and love this version with words. Hint: QUILT is a good word for modifying to guess letters.

J. taught me Jotto!. In 1970, I had just arrived in the US and I knew a woman grad student, whom I’ll call J. She was a word wizard ( (Example: she rearranged the fundamental one line ethos of The New York Times, which was ‘All the News That is Fit to Print’ and created a mock and a sarcastic criticism of their woke credo: “All the News that Print to Fit!”). She taught me Jotto! And, I have played it forever since 1971!

My favorite game. I loved Jotto as a child an am addicted to this game. I wish it had a way to clear the alphabet grid when it is obvious you have isolated wrong letters. The dictionary seems lacking a bit. I have played so much, I’m going thru the words all over again. Im glad to see the game is still being updated. It’s good brain exercise.

Jotto. I’ve typed in several 5 letter words but when I press go, it says I must use only 5!! Letter words. Since when did”tiger” and “takes” no longer use 5 letters? And where do you go to fix and/or correct?

Should be able to save incomplete games. Even back in the pre-Internet days when jotto was simply a game you played with pencil and paper it was always the best game for highly intelligent people. The only thing I would add for this version is the ability to save a game that is not complete for a later play. Otherwise it's terrific!

Uh...maybe I’m not understanding?. I guessed the word happy and it said 1, then I guessed logic (which I realize shares no letters with happy) and it said 1. I am assuming the 1 means 1 letter is right? But happy and logic don’t share any letters.

Fun from my childhood. I used to play Jotto over 50 years ago n am glad it’s not an app that u can play by itself or with another player. Great game I do think, though, that the words u have tried should show in full ( use a monospaced font) n if u mark a letter out it should be dimmed, not just colored differently

Latest update is dumbed down. With the latest update they made the game way too easy and it’s not fun or challenging anymore. I enjoyed the challenge presented by even the easy level in the previous version, but with the latest update I’m solving all the puzzles way too fast. PLUS they’ve now locked all the other levels unless you pay for the app - no way, not after this dumbing down nonsense.

Great App for Jotto. I disagree with the previous reviewer, I like the manual letter marking system; it is more like real Jotto.

Great game.. I was happy to find this Jotto game, I used to play it years ago with my best friend. We used pen and paper then. And I wish there was someway we could mark off the letters on our guesses that are incorrect and circle the ones that are correct, Like I used to.I know I can change the colors on the board. But it’s just faster if we were able to mark our guesses right or wrong. But I really am enjoying the game and if I could do that it would be five stars or more. Great game. Really exercises the “little gray cells.”

Jotto!. I remember this games from childhood. Love it !! Very fun.

Double letters?!?!. The Jotto I always played never allowed the word we are guessing to have a double letter.

Disappointed. I would have given this app 4 or 5 stars... until today. Apparently it was updated overnight, and now the words guessed, which appear on the right side of the bank of letters WRAP so that they're very difficult to view and comprehend. Also the colors are too pastel and similar to one another. Hard to detect green vs yellow or even red. Hope these issues are fixed soon, especially the word wrap issue. Also hope I'll find the new version has more "difficult"-level words. I've been through them all so many times my guesses are based on memory of past words found. That's all. Thanks. I play on my iPad 3, btw.

A Workout for Your Brain. I was introduced to Jotto years ago, and became a fan. It’s great to be able to play against the computer anytime!

Best word game. Everyone’s obsessed with Wordle right now, but Jotto is far more challenging, which makes it more fun.

Needs multiplayer. Need to be able to play without handing tablet off, I.e. online play to be useful. It’s really just a fancy piece of paper as it is

There should not be double letters. There should not be double letter words allowed

Jenny. I like this app, but there are a few things that I would change. I would only allow a certain number of guesses before you lose the round. Also, I would reserve words with two of the same letter for the advanced rounds and I would not use completely obscure words that hardly anyone has ever heard of in the advanced rounds--just use harder words to guess due to letter arrangement or repeat letters or more vowels, and somewhat harder vocabulary--not often used, but words you've heard of. I would also very much like to be able to cross off the wrong letters in the words I've guessed. To the person who said they needed a tutorial, you have to type your words from the key pad, not the squares. You use the squares to turn the letters green if you know they're in the word (tap the letter twice), and red if you know they're not (tap it once).

Almost. The one improvement I would recommend is the ability to guess words that have repeat letters. Example “sassy”. If the letter’s’ is correct, that would account for 3 by itself. Even if the final word is restricted to words without duplicate letters, clue words should not have that restriction. Perhaps the coder could include this as an option.

like mastermind, but 5 letter words. i have been looking for a 5-letter word mastermind game for a long time now. Thank you for writing it. It seems the settings have improved since I last reviewed it. Now you can pick your difficulty level. The starting difficulty is easy, which is just normal 5 letter words. Today, i got “camel”.

Terrible. Couldn’t even stand doing the first word. I hate the design. Delete!

Excellent for solo play. Someday perhaps it will have a portal so we can play ‘live’ with others. But as a solo game it works quite well. Coming from 50 years of pencil and paper Jotto, it took me a few frustrating moments to get used to the red-green-yellow buttons. But now that I have got it down, I am very happy to be able to play Jotto whenever I feel like it. The lone developer is kind and very responsive to questions! (2022, years after I wrote the above, it all still stands).

Love it but. Would love to be able to easily slide letters around when trying to unscramble the word. If guessed words showed red and green for letters known, that would be helpful. Then I will pay🙂

Played as a kid, love this game.. Like WORDLE only more challenging because you have to figure out placement on your own. For future updates, I would love to see… Color coding I have assigned in the alphabet list reflected in the words I have guessed so far. But most of all (and to make it most like the original game) I would like to see two-player mode where I could guess the word my friend entered while he could guess the word I entered and we would see which person could guess the opponent’s word first. This would NOT be a “here’s my word. Now how many turns does it take you to guess it. Answer me back with the result.” It would be either turn by turn (I make a guess on his word and I get the results, I.e., “2”. Then he send me his next guess on my word. In my perfect world, we could play live on the same screen with me seeing his guesses and him seeing mine.

Takes me back!!!. Played this as a paper-and- pencil game for hours with my bestie as a kid

Awesome memories of Jotto. Learned how to play this game back in 1973ish. My fourth grade teachers would play it during class. We would run back and forth from our classrooms with a pice of paper with a word on it. Hoping for a zero or a high # (4 or 5). My Mom was one of those teachers, today my mom and I play it almost daily over the phone; on paper. So so Happy to have found it in an App. Mahalo for creating it for us. 🌞

Fun game but some curve balls. “Gloze”? What kind of word is that?? It took me 24 tries to figure out this word I’ve never heard in use? I like this game for the most part but not when I have to guess a word I’ve never heard before…

Love the app, not the way it tells me I have picked a word that’s not on its list.. I really, really like this app. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars is the way it tells me “not a real word” when I know it IS a real word. Makes me gnash my teeth every time. Why can’t it just say “Sorry, not on my list”? This happens multiple times during a session. GRRR! I still like the app a lot and continue to play it often.

Jotto. Really hoped that this was a game I could appreciate so I upgraded it right away. Not sure….I input a 5-letter word and a warning comes up and says “Not a 5 letter word”. Please fix and I won’t ask Apple for a refund.

Letter labeling is cumbersome. The system for labeling letters as in or out is entirely manual and not convenient - one cycles through the possible designations manually, with the app not keeping track of which letters have been proven in or out. It is too bad since this will be the only Jotto app left in OS 11 and to get proper functionality one will need to use a web site.

VERY CONFUSING. Don’t bother

Excellent game. This is like a better form of Wordle for me (it’s like Worlde but if you only got yellow blocks). It’s a game I can spend hours playing, it is simple and perfect, and it’s a clever concept so you can refine your strategies. It’s a good skill but not impossible - like a perfect balance. Highly recommend.

Great game. Lots of fun- a brain teaser to remember five letter words. In the family of mine sweeper and mastermind you have to guess a five letter word by deduction. I hope the next update will exclude words already chosen as it seems to have a limited vocabulary. Great to play at any time.

Not enough words. I agree with other reviewers that the bank of words is far too small. It seems like the developer is not listening. Nice graphics on this and huge potential as it works just like the paper version. But words start repeating very quickly and one soon has the word bank memorized. Despite the statement that the largest update increased the word bank, it is still very small.

Great game Few Words. I paid for a game that after a very short while The words are already repeating. There should be updates with the new words constantly added. I would like a refund it’s just not worth the money

motto. I loved this game decades ago and was happy to find it for my ipad. If I had a vote, I might have included the ability to play with a friend at a distance... that would be fun. Maybe that will be forthcoming one day. For now though, I'm enjoying just playing against the computer.

Features that could make this better. There used to be an iOS app called WITS!. It was a variation on Jotto that showed the player not only how many letters in each guess were correct but also how many of those letters were in the correct position in the mystery word. As a result, playing the game required a lot more logical deduction than simple guesswork. Another nice feature was that as letters were deduced by the player, they were indicated in the list of guesses. Unfortunately, that app has not been updated for a number of years, and is no longer compatible with the current operating systems. I wonder if the creators of this app would consider adding any of those features.

Wordle is for children Jotto is for real players. Wordle gives you bullseye letters once you find one so you can move forward to a new guess using the found letters. With JOTTO the only advantage is that there are no limits to the guessed words.

Jotto. Played this game on paper years ago. An interesting deductive game. Hoping the developers have increased the “trove” of solvable words, with the updated version. Try it!

Enjoy this app!. My only quibble is that I thought there could not be repeating letters, but I see you can turn that off. An enjoyable logic puzzle that’s also a word game. I do a few rounds after my daily Wordle just for a bit of mind exercising in a different direction. Appreciate the suggestion from another reviewer about using QUILT as an elimination word. I will often use FUZZY and CHUCK for this. Eager to try QUILT as well. This is probably too much of a stretch, but I often think of the Bletchley Park codebreakers when I work this. (Like the book “The Rose Code”)

A problem. Love the game but find there is no way to change levels of difficult...ever. Even quitting the game and relaunching, I am set to Hard and can't choose another level. Also, there should never be double letters...but that's just me. Besides the ability to try another level, I wish there were a fourth color for "possibles."

Hard level allows duplicate letters. I have always enjoyed Jotto, and always played with the "no duplicate letters rule" so I was surprised to get a word with just 4 letters of the alphabet in it. Never mind, it is still a great game and this is a good implementation.

One suggestion that would sell it. REAL ONLINE JOTTO BATTLES. I'm not talking about someone who might just be a boring computer with a mechanical brain but being able to sign in and play your buddies. Pretty much any kind of two player game that is being played through Apple has a setting to play single players, play the computer, or ACTUALLY PLAY YOUR FRIENDS! Please?? :)

Happy return to Jotto!!. SO glad to find a Jotto Ap! Loved this game years ago and am happy to play it again. Would like to be able to compare my clue words to the answer when I have to give up (sad but true... Had to be done).

Pretty good little word app. This is a pretty good little word app that fills in the gaps while waiting at the Dentist, bus stop, etc. my one recommended addition would be a fourth color to enable letters to be marked as 'possible'. That way you could use green for 'positive', red for 'negative', white for 'untried' and the fourth color for 'possible'.

Hours of fun. This game is fun and challenging! Lots of words to guess which keeps it interesting

Thank you!. I have been a Jotto fan since I was about 13 years old (many, many years ago) when the neighborhood kids used to play for hours. I still have the original game— but no one to play with. I am not sure why I decided to search for Jotto in the App Store, but how pleasantly surprised I was to find it. The first week or two, though I enjoyed the game, I found it difficult to keep track of which letters I had determined were not used and which ones were. Although I could color code the alphabet, it was still hard to track. (I use the 3 different colors to identify letters I have already guessed, letters I have determined are not in the word and letters I have determined ARE in the word.) Then a couple of days ago, I started playing and immediately noticed a programming change. Now the letters in my actual word selections are color coded to match how I assign colors in the alphabet. This makes tracking the correct/incorrect letters in each word so much easier! Thank you! The only improvement I can suggest now, is to change the color options. The yellow and the orange are too close in value—and therefore too hard to differentiate.

Fun idea. Fun to play, hard to stop. Ice always liked word puzzles and this one is easy to like.

I always loved Jotto as a kid - this app is fun to play. I was very happy when I found this app. Lots of fun to play. Biggest disappointment is that I can't mark out letters in the words that I guessed as I did as a child when I used paper and pencil.

Fun!. Reasonable implementation of the game. Not 5 stars because of limited words for the 'hard' level. Sometimes able to guess word with 3 letters because I have done the same word several times. Also, one word that isn't a word 'mugho' which, oddly, is the answer, but when guessed is not an acceptable word! Suggested improvements: 1). Larger secret word vocabulary; 2). Highlight letters in guessed words with same colors assigned in alphabet (I.e., green for known letters, red for eliminated patters); 3). New game defaults to previous settings instead of requiring selection every time.

Good. This is a classic quick game incorporating logic and word knowledge. The design and play are good. A couple of bugs -- a game in progress is sometimes lost when the app goes to the background or phone goes to sleep. And the easiest level isn't supposed to have words with repeated letters, but I do sometimes get them. I look forward to more of this app in the future!

Addicted. Love this old family favorite we always play on card trips, but you can't find Jotto pads anymore. Love it that I can play against computer at my own pace and keep track of letters ruled out. No changes needed for me.

Very good version. Been playing Jotto for a lot of years and this app is pretty good. I wish it didn't allow repeat letters in the word it chooses. And sometimes when, say E is a letter and I type Queen as a guess it will say 2 and sometimes it will say 1 even though I know that E is the only letter. It doesn't handle double letters consistently. Other than that, like the alphabet right there and the way the letters are red or green. Sometimes I hit a letter by mistake that I've already turned red or green and that messes me up, but I just try very hard not to let my thumb travel over there. Good app!!

Great app just like game. Just like the paper game. Wish there were more colors, for tried letters, possible pairs, etc.

Doesn't play like original Jotto. Playing against computer is okay but disappointed in multi player. I have original Jotto game and rules. You always picked your own words. They're always five letter words and you take turn after each guess. This Jotto just not what I was hoping for. We now just play through text message and use original game pages at each end

Love the changes, but.... So glad your color scheme changed as it is easier on the eyes than before. I really like your set up, as well, because it does not insult my intelligence as did another Jotto app. I can play this Jotto for hours, now. Thanks for the changes! P.S. I am noticing that , when I have to interrupt the game or put my phone down for a few minutes, my game is completely erased. Please fix this bug in your next update so that this no longer happens. Would have rated this game with 5 stars otherwise.

Allows the same letter to be counted twice. Confusing!. I agree with goblingurl! It doesn't account for letters correctly. My advice, if you're considering buying this app, is to wait for someone to come out with a better version.
