One of the best apps I've downloaded. I loaded this app before a trip to Europe. Since my carrier does not offer international service, I wanted a mapping program that did not require a cell signal. Pocket Earth has exceeded my expectations. It is fast and accurate. It scales quickly and does well in cities and towns. Car navigation so far has been flawless. The user manual is one of the best app manuals I've come across. Great job by the developers!!

Bob. This is a "demo" version,... only good for Dublin, Ireland. If you want anything else you have to buy the full version. Doesn't tell ya that in the ad or how much it is.

Works great!. Great program, and nice accuracy all around. The only drawback is it can be a little slow loading, and it has to reload every time you zoom when you aren't connected to wifi.

Fantastic app. I am an airline pilot and use it for illustrations quite frequently, worldwide.

One of my favorite Apps. Before leaving for a Danube River cruise, I downloaded all of the maps for the Eastern European countries, as well as several for the USA. They didn't take up much space, but were incredible, both while walking and driving. I was amazed to find out how much additional information was available everywhere with Wikipedia references that were quite extensive and that went far beyond what our local guides had given us, even in remote locations that I had never even previously heard of. While walking I was able to put in a street or address, and find my way to the location while offline. This worked well, but of course the one much to be desired improvement would be the ability to get turn by turn directions while offline, as the destination is drawn as a straight line from location to destination. However it is constantly upgraded as you move in the direction of your destination, so that it does take you there. We are a traveling family, and I have urged everyone to make the purchase. It is probably the best few bucks I have ever spent.

Free update is incredibly great!. Pocket Earth has had several new features added, and just keeps getting better. Now with Drop-a-Pin at my location, and add my own pictures to the Pin, we can record so much more about our travels so easily. Excellent OFFLINE, stored on my iPad maps; POIs galore, my at-home travel research Pins; Wikipedia POIs; import of trails and routes found online; add up to an app without which I cannot live.

Top five apps of mine. Goes above and beyond normal "apps"; this is like having superpowers. Offline waypoints, GPS tracking in snow covered conditions, what3words locations, this app has had one of the four coveted spots on my iPhone's dock for years. I am able to pull answers out that friends can't find, locate hidden gems, and track trails that other maps don't show. Get it and pay for it, because it's worth it. This review is not sponsored; I'm just a big fan.

Great app. Of all the maps I downloaded, even the paid ones, this was the best and has aided in our hunting trip tremendously. Offline, in the dark, dense in a thicket, no issues. Tracks you down and pinpoints where your at and where you will head back and head on. Very well made!!! If there was a 10 star, this would be it.

great for exploring. i find this app helpful to review areas i explore on my motorcycle. i do find the interface a little less than intuitive (i deleted a ride yesterday in error and i really wanted to see the woods i was exploring at home yesterday) but the app works great when i use it correctly. a stop/pause and then end route would be nice. i deleted thinking i was marking the end of my route. overall though the app is great to use offline and doesnt seem to drain the battery as much as expected. plus its free, thanks!

Great for Travel. This app has amazingly detailed maps of the major cities. It even shows where restrooms and traffic lights are. Upgrade to Pro for $9 to download maps for offline use, then plan & save your routes. It's great for travel when you don't want to use too much data. For me, this is a godsend.

Neat App. It has lots of features.

Just used in Addis Ababa. Got stuck in traffic in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and pulled out this app. Found a side street that got me on a main road I was familiar with, got home in just 10 minutes later than we planned. Love this app as we live in our host country, Ethiopia!

Waste of time and money.. Google maps and Apples are better and free.

Well designed, incredibly useful.. I am moving to a new city and being able to tag, store, and organize various locations is amazing. Using it offline is great, it will even remember pre-planned (and downloaded) routes on my ipad. Then with cell data on iphone can show location and give spoken directions. Worth so much more than I paid!

Great app. I have used this all over the world. Just download the state or country. Easy peasy. They take space so don’t forget to delete them when your trip is over.

Best Travel Buddy. This app has been a life saver for me many times while traveling around the world. Easy to find necessaries like grocery stores, bus stops, toilets, campsites, and much more. Everything has its own unique symbol. You can save the places that matter to you which make the symbols bolder than the regular ones. The topographical maps have been a lifesaver choosing routes that are doable with heavy backpacks. And I love that you can create personal saved points and label and color code them! I label all the fun things like where I found a wild animal or bee farm or a good campsite. etc! And I also like highlighting big things like the tourist destinations I want to see because your personal points stand out over the other ones even when you zoom out really far. The only thing is to be careful not to have the map start looking to crowded and messy with enlarged, highlighted points.

Had some difficulty. Search function not returning any results. User interface sometimes awkward. User manual is not real clear, and there seems to be no online support or "Contact Us" for getting questions answered. I'm trying to use it, but it has not been helpful when I'm in a hurry.

Does not work offline as stated. Really unhappy because I purchased the world maps and tried to get route guidance while offline but got repeated alerts asking to establish internet connection so in fact the app does NOT "work completely offline" as stated in the description. The maps do appear to download and I guess some people are happy with how this app works for them but I barely made it to my destination. Please update so that it truly does work completely offline and I'll be happy to change my rating. Requesting a refund from Apple is too cumbersome.

Just needs carplay. Give it Carplay support and it is 6/5 stars

Won't route without internet connection. It won't work without internet connection or wifi.its not really an offline map

Very limited demo. Only shows Ireland, so I don't know if this will fulfill my needs or not. Am NOT willing to pay three dollars to find out it is not what I need after all. It does zoom in very closely to a chosen city in Ireland, though, but that is not what I am wanting. I wish to have a quality atlas that shows all the countries on each continent, and also zooms into each city.

Not much Topo detail. I found that there is not much detail to elevation lines and wetlands are not marked very well if at all. I mainly download it for use offline with what3words

A very handy map app. I have tried quite a few maps and atlas type apps and this is my favorite for traveling. Is has city maps for all major cities of course but it also covers many smaller places as well. The guide books are also a nice feature.

Please make this Apple CarPlay compatible!!!. This is an awesome app!! I use it a lot for traveling on motorcycles, off-road! I love the downloadable features for use without service! Only problem is it’s not Apple CarPlay compatible so I’m not able to use it on any larger screen device.

Many great features. Two complaints in an otherwise solid app: (1) Minor roads only appear when you zoom pretty far in. They should be visibility at pretty much all zooms as very light lines (for example). (2) Road labels don’t appear on minor roads until you are zoomed way, way in. These are vector maps, so all the data is there at all zooms - the developer just chooses not to display it for us. Give us a switch/option to “show all roads”, for example - some of us would choose to have a busier map for certain applications, given that is has more information.

Great maps. The maps are very easy to use. A simple spreading apart of two fingers and more detailed maps quickly appear. I've searched through other apps and really enjoy using this one.

Pocket Earth. Awesome tool. Wiki feature is very nice for touring especially in Europe. I like to save favorites places and at end of trip create a route showing all the places visited. Not happy with lack of map updates that I find in OSM but not in app

iPhone 5s Crashes. Can't review, crashes as soon as you open it on iPhone 5s with iOS 7.

Great map for foreign holiday. Used this App extensively during a recent 7 week hiking and cycling holiday in Europe. Used it daily. Wouldn't want to be without it. How I used it: 1. Offline maps. If you have a limited data plan or are traveling in an area with poor cellular data, the offline maps function is huge. You can put your phone in airplane mode and still have full map functionality. Google maps will not work in areas without cellular data. Even if you have lots of data, putting your phone in airplane mode saves tons of battery power, keeps your charge up through long days of touring. 2. GPX functionality. I downloaded some cycling routes from a web site and was able to upload these on my iPhone and visualize these on the Pocketearth App. Similarly, I was able to record my rides and save them as GPX files, which I could then share with friends. This is an inexpensive introduction to the world of digital mapping and GPX. 3. Hiking. We downloaded GPX files of our hiking route and during the hike were able to check we were on the right path. Given that we were hiking on unmarked trails, this was incredibly reassuring that we would not get lost. Could also track how many miles we walked. 4. Altitude. The altitude was within a few metes of both the topographic map and a friend with a $200 altimeter. Amazing that you can get this for only $10! One criticism: cannot follow an existing GPX track AND simultaneously record one's own track.

File sizes too large!. UK map is now 1.3 GB up from a mere 500MB! If this is a glitch, please fix, as Uk is a small country and roads there dont change often. Otherwise, too big for my iPad. :-(

Can't really be used offline. I thought this would be the solution for getting around while out of the country without paying foreign data rates. It's not. You can't do something as basic as get a route to a landmark without being online. I was left clumsily trying to drive while repeatedly looking down at my screen to see where on the map I am since I couldn't plan a route or get turn by turn directions without being online even though the full map had been downloaded to my phone. I don't see the point of this if it can't give you directions without being online.

Charges for FREE maps. Why charge to download FREE online maps?? Un-installed.

Worth having. Accurate

No cell service -no problem. Adventure motorcycle guy told me about this App. I use it all the time-especially when I have no cell service. It is a must have if you go out in the dingle berries.

Voice nav offline on the autobahn!. Just got back from a trip to Germany. Some friends there put me into this app because it works offline and unlike google, it doesn't send your location to "the cloud". Found it much cheaper and faster than using apple maps and much better for storing all my favourite cafes and spots for next time. Was even able to use in on the autobarn! They added voice navigation while I was there. Great feature. Developers seem to always be adding new stuff. 5 stars.

Fantastic - but where are the track markings from?. This app (pro version) I use constantly to drive my 4x4 7ton motorhome through Australia. But... Doesn't everyone has the hole Pro map covered with blue and red thick marked walking tracks and bus lines? They cover dead end roads and so many streets, that it's irritating. I use PE Pro on an Ipad2 with newest IOS. Is this a bug? Only on Ipad2? What can I do? I downloaded none Pro and no tracks marked there. Topo now 15$. Did you guys offered topo to basic PE for 100% price rise and made PE Pro useless to make people switch over and buy Topo again??? looks like it

Worst app I have ever bought. I downloaded the App, paid for the maps so they could be used offline.... But they cannot be used for routing unless you have Internet Generally unusable in lots of other aspects

Best of all offline Map Apps. Currently travelling around Italy and Spain and France using the downloaded maps with the GPS positioning ..it’s just brilliant! Better than any app for this use. Just a bit of getting used to at the start but once there you’re in! Graphics are superior to Google ..very easy to read . The travel guide option is much better than many others covering many topics. Highly recommend . Geoff

David Avent. Would not refund addon. As i mistakenly bought the world +topo instead of PE-pro. Also Having 2 separate products seems convoluted and misleading. Have to use a different app for offline routing. Both these issues have been addressed on other software, i find it difficult to believe it is not currently possible with this otherwise fine product.

Great hiking companion in NZ. This app was soooo useful when hiking in NZ. Optional pro upgrades are highly recommended. Now I even use this app around my home town. Wonderful.

Truly awful. This is a bad gps app. One of the worse I have ever used. Despite saying it works off-line. It will not route unless it has an internet connection. It will not correct or re-route it you go off course. Even with internet connection. Even if you go to the trouble to make and save your routes when you have internet. (A complete pain that no other gps app needs doing) if you miss the start of the route, it will not begin the route. These things are basic gps functionally and this app fails them all. It's POI are terrible. Unreadable. Out of date and unusable. It's interface is confusing and counterintuitive. There are much better topographical map apps that do not route but have much better map detail. And much much better routable gps Apps. That truly work offline. Reroute as required, have useable POI and better interfaces. Look elsewhere. I wasted my money. Don't make the same mistake.

Pocket earth. Great app I used it in the Himalaya and use it every weekend as a trekking GPS the offline function is particularly useful.

Crashes on iPad. Latest version crashes on iPad (iOS 8) but not iPhone. Okay on iPad running iOS9. Please fix. Was fine before last week's update.

Great app but. I purchased this app some time ago and have enjoyed using it immensely. Unfortunately I can no longer view topographic maps. Im not sure what the problem is and I don’t seem to be able to get a response from the developer. I suspect Pocket earth wants me to purchase Pro so has removed features. When I purchased this app there was no Pro.

Best ever. Since discovering pocket earth about 10 years ago while walking from London to Rome l have never found an app as good. Pocket earth is as good in oz where l live, and in Albania where l have walked!l would be totally lost without it!!

Handy. We find this App so handy to use when travelling and use the off line maps frequently. A must for travelling.

Map cords too small. Great app. Main issue is that the coordinates at the bottom cannot be made larger. There is a text size setting, that only works for some text on the map. I also need it bigger on the cords please. Thx.

Map routes. Unless I was doing something wrong the app wouldn't give me a direction route unless I was online. So I could see the maps off line perfectly I couldn't get any directions

Best travel app yet. I've tried 6 apps for offline maps and probably another 6 for travel guides. This one takes the cake with full Wikipedia article and wiki voyage pages.

Great maps app. There has been some download issues lately BUT the developer has been very quick to fix these. I use this app on my iPad and iPod without phone connection. Highly recommended.

One of the best mapping software. This app was indispensable on my 8 wks trip in western USA. It has incredible detailed maps, with hips of POI. Maps are available for offline . Also like import and export function for POI. Navigation function is however slightly impaired by inability to recalculate the route, when strayed from planed route. Overall it is great app!

Pocket Earth a Great App. Great News An App that not only works but works extremely well plus Fantastic support. I have been using Pocket Earth for some twelve months and have used it in many countries without failure. It has everything you need to find your way around and without a network connection. However as with most things these days there can be issues at some point and I had one with this App. The support for this App was extraordinarily good I had the fastest response unlike most Apps you read about these days. They resolved my issue in no time. I am so happy not only with the App but how good the support is, if only other Apps were this good. Thank you Pocket Earth you have made it so easy. Don't bother using anything else.

A very handy navigation tool for walking anywhere in the world. I’ve been using Pocket Earth for about four years in Australia, Europe, South America, and the USA. The topographic maps are accurate and up to date. Great tool!

Fantastic map app!. I love this app and use it all the time. We have travelled to Europe and Canada using this app to find our way around- even remote places in the forest, to plot routes to points of interest, to find a supermarket near by to find addresses. I would never go away without it! I cannot recommend this app more highly! Took a little while to find my way around the many things you can access but once I became familar with the menu and icons it is a breeze! I down load off line maps and plan our trips before we leave and don't waste any time searching for things or places while we are on holiday. This is such a comprehesive app so well designed- thank you

Fantastic. Pocket Earth is a great app, the offline content is really good in foreign countries when you have no internet, it's location pointer is spot on, being able to look up about where you are on wiki just by touching the marker is fantastic, I have recommended this app to many people...

Great app - work offline. I used this app when in Hanoi and Sapa. Downloaded the maps before the trip and I had no issue. Also great to find walks. Better than Google map for topography. Highly recommended

Rex. This is a great app that I use when hunting Sambar deer in the Victorian HiCountry It always gets me back to camp, the truck or a feature in the landscape that I’m walking to often in the dark and through fog and cloud. I’ve also used this app traveling 3500km across Australia on Outback tracks many of which were cattle station tracks, and amazingly they were clearly and accurately marked within the app. I thoroughly recommend this app to any land Traveller Regards stay Safe Rex

Sharing all the best surf spots!. I love this app. It's gold. I've downloaded all the maps for Australia. Easy, quick. Now I can turn data off and not worry about expensive data roaming or finding wifi. It even works in airplane mode (but not the gps). I've been using it to keep track of my secret surf spots up and down the east coast but also more for great cafés I want to find again. I loved it so much I bought the pro version!

Review. Excellent App, very useful, love it

Great for browsing maps useless for navigating. Review based on paid version The quality of the maps is fantastic with good detail including topographic contour lines. . This makes it a great app for browsing the map. But it’s a very poor gps navigating app. It requires online access whenever you deviate from the original route which makes it virtually useless outside mobile phone network coverage. It cannot display a 3D view Looking ahead like other gps navigations apps. Planning a route is also more painful than other navigating apps. In summary if you want to just browse and explore maps then this app is great. It’s also great as a flight tracker if you use it aboard an aircraft as the app displays speed and altitude. But if you want a dedicated true offline gps navigation app then get something like magic earth.

GPS doesn’t work. This app would be brilliant if the GPS worked offline… great topographical maps but no navigation. I used it for 3 months trekking in Italy and it was awful. It showed me where I was at the start of the day before I set out, then that was it. So disappointing

Best travel app ever. Saving time and money. I love it! No more heavy guide books. No more stress or anxiety about being in a new place. Im never Lost! And i don't need a data connection. Even just to communicate my destination to a Taxi or xe om Driver - super useful. Ohh and now i know im not getting Driver around in circles. Even used it to find close pubs and restruants. Saved me so much time and money! Well worth it. Put your price up guys!

I’m sad this isn’t being supported. I liked using the offline topo maps. Sadly, this app seems no longer supported. In Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, all locations (hundreds of them!) are now labeled as simply ‘Haida Gwaii’. The developer’s website is down. :-(

It is excellent. I have it with me in every trip I take, all over the world. It is accurate also on off road trails. You have access to information everywhere you go like a local. The recording function is also very good, and provides a log of all your travel. It works well also for flight tracking. All this on local application. No need for data plan abroad or running out of coverage. Memory management is good so you never consume huge resources from your device. I love it and I am a power user.

Pocket Earth is an excellent tool. I've used Pocket earth for several on road and off road Motorcycle rides across Canada and the US, and for my upcoming ride around the world, I'm leaving my Garmin GPS at home and only bringing Pocket Earth on my iPhone (and a few paper maps...). Great app!

Awesome so far. Works really well for me. I'm able to import gpx files to follow my routes for cycling without being connected to wireless. I've only used the free version so far but will buy the full version when I need more cities.

Exactly what I needed. See the title. Excellent topo maps with biking and hiking trails. Much better than the paper topo 50.

Great app. I use it on my iPhone. It is terrific for remote places without data connections, and most of all for getting around countries where one does not have a data plan, or where data roaming is prohibitively expensive.

Best open street map app. Ive tested dozens of maps. This is the best by far...it has weekly updates from openstreetmap and it supports offline download. So you can simply turn your iphone to airplane mode, and open the app, to save you data and battery at once. Love it!!!

Just what I needed, but.... I was looking for an app that would provide an abundance of trails / off road routes. However, I don’t like that when I try to zoom in, all the important details on the map reduce in size.

Menu button doesn't work on iPhone 4. The new version has broken the button!
