Wasted potential. This app is too crude. The option to adjust the feathering is lame. The transitions from blur to focus are so harsh that regardless of the effort the final product looks like a cutout pasted onto an overly blurred background. It's a cheap attempt to create a DSLR effect but it is ultimately an exercise in frustration. Not even worth a dollar. I am a photographer and I enjoy taking photos with a variety of prime lenses. This in no way resembles the effect of a real camera.

App review against its competitors. 1st review - decent and well thought out. Give 4 stars so far. Against the other app this one seems to be slightly better. Although other app crashed and developer does not know why it's crashing will need more head2head testing on same photo before giving a second rating. 2nd review against head2head photo. Have to downgrade this apps rating to 3 stars against other app at 4 stars even with other app crashing. Why? This app does NOT have a macro masking pop up viewer so you can actually trace outline of what you want to keep in focus. Using your fat finger user cannot see the mask. Sad. This app does have far more tools filters effects than other app. Yet cannot find the undo button when I made a background blur mistake. Developer give user a macro mask viewer window and an undo button and this app easy 4.5 stars!!

After focus. Totally stinks paid for app for my IPhone 6. Does horrible job poor instructions no save button Bad money spent😡😡

Suggestions. This app is generally a great tool for me. I second the request someone else made regarding more precise masking and that would be changing the preset brush sizes to a variable slide controlled brush size controller, so one can get into tight areas. Another thing would help greatly: the ability to lock zoom so that one can paint the mask without the image constantly zooming in and out. Being able to pan while in zoom would help a lot. For those who have difficulties using fingers to mask, I would suggest trying a brush stylus such as the Sensū Solo or even a regular rubber tipped stylus. It is much easier to paint with than a finger.

Still the best! By far.... I can't express how much I love this app. I've been using AfterFocus for awhile now. It's my go to app for full control of the depth of feel I'm looking for. "Smart blur" is so cool!

Horrible. Doesn't work... waste of money

Great app and easy to use!. Great app!

Simple & easy filtering. The app was very easy to use. In minutes, I had downloaded the app and was able to quickly fix a picture to blur out a photo bomber and share the photo in minutes. I use this app often because of its simplicity. There are more advanced adjustments that can be made to the filtering, but the app works great with the default settings.

Quite decent for the price. Sure, I'd prefer full res with all EXIF data maintained, but that's really something Apple should mandate so we can prevent rogue apps like this from ruining our iOS experience. For the price, the app does a very respectable job. It is by no means perfect (particularly once you see the full-size image and realize all that wasn't easily seen on the small screen), but it is still best-in-class for iOS. Just be aware that the "smart" setting may not be smart enough if you're viewing on a regular computer screen or making prints.

Great app. But is it abandonware? There was no update for 3 years already. Feels and work outdated. Reduced fto 5 to 2 stars unless it is updated or developer confirms it will be updated.

Doesn’t save in full resolution. This app is easy to use to simulate a narrow depth of field. But unfortunately it doesn’t save your images in full resolution.

Smart!!. This app gives you fantastic EASY access to the 'pop out' focus/blur style of adjustments to your photos. Very smart app that has all the little tools and features you'll need to quickly achieve great effects. The default setting of overwriting your original photo should be changed before you use, if it's your wish to keep your original photo. FYI. Great app.

Tweak app. You should give the user the ability to draw on the subject, and lift the pen or fingertip off without highlighting the entire subject. The addition of a "NEXT" button to do just that would be much more convenient. It allows us to see better when doing detailed works on the subject, such as drawing on areas of the subject that aren't meant to be blurred

Pretty Good, thumbs up. Just got this app because I wanted to touch up some selfies to use as profile pics. I usually take selfies on snap or Instagram because of the nice filters, but then you don’t get to take advantage of the portrait mode on your phone. This app did exactly what I needed it to. The “manual blur” is fast and easy to use and I love how it lets you change the amount of blur after you’ve cropped out the background

Do one thing, but do very well!. I use this app to make my photos more lively. It is very easy to select people or objects in a photo using the smart selection tool, and its UX is great. You will instantly know how to use it; very intuitive. Facing out background adds way better effect than I expected. Two thumbs up!

For $.99 it's great. It isn't Photoshop but for $.99 it does what it's supposed to do quickly and easily I am delighted.

It strips out metadata. Works pretty well, especially if you take your time to carefully mask the areas you want to blur. I’ve used it a long time and will continue to until I find a similar app that leaves my metadata intact. As a photographer, it’s pretty important to have that info for photos in my catalog and galleries. So, only 3 stars from me. However, it’s great for quick social media posts if you don’t care about preserving metadata.

What happened. This worked great at one time. I haven’t used it in awhile and now it doesn’t work. Yes, app is updated. Disappointing!!

Doesn’t save photo to phone. App crashes when you try to save. I want a refund

Awesome! Just Wish.... This is the best blurring app I've used. Most of my photos don't have things at the same distance across the frame so using just a band to set focus and blur areas doesn't work. Same with just using a circle. This app lets you choose the objects to be sharp, mid, or all out of focus. Take the time to view the tutorial video on using the smart method. It pays off. And you can adjust the blur amount - I usually tone it down a bit. I don't mind the stronger setting as it lets me clearly see what the app is doing. Only 4 stars due to not supporting high resolution images from my other cameras. Need this and maybe make the app universal so I don't have to use it 2X on my iPad.

One of the best. This app has been worth every penny and more. Everyone that I've sent my pictures to has been impressed with the look of the pictures. I am just an average photo taker, but with this app pictures can look like a professional. It was extremely easy to use and navigate. At first I was just looking for an app to blur the background in some of my pictures, but this app can do that and so much more. I've now find myself just looking through my photo album to look for other pictures I like that I can modify as well. Definitely one of the best photo apps out there!

Sharp edges. I love the app and it works great for images that need a defined cut out blur. If I need a soft transition blur it will not do it. The edge feather only is a few pixels wide. If they added a way to adjust the feather size this app would totally rule. The mid and background areas you make don't blend at all. The harsh lines between the focus and background are too strong. Without being able to feather or blend that blur you have to basically use it for cut outs if that makes sense. They do have an option to do a straight line blur that does feather or fade nice, but not when selecting an area to cutout.

Stopped working?. Every time I go to use this app now it tries to download an update and it stops working with no explanation.

Best focus app!. This app has the unique focus area selection method and it is easier to use than other touch-based focus-blur apps. Edge of selected area is clearly separated from blurred background. This app will be a my favorite after-camera app.

Hey Photo Pro's - Get this one!. I have tried all similar apps and can say this is the best app to quickly and accurately get really impressive fake DOF results - I'm actually kinda blown away by how well this app works and the "smart" controls and selection process are much more intuitive and easier to use than competing products. Best $0.99 you'll spend in the app store if you're a photographer looking for that DOF you traditionally only get with a DSLR. Nice work developers!

Still works and it's great. Was worried about buying an app that hasn't been updated in 3 years but it worked great. I am using an iPhone 8 Plus on iOS 13 and it worked flawlessly. Probably the best option on an iPhone for blurring backgrounds. I was very impressed.

WOW!!!. I spend hours everytime I use my iPhone camera, using a very specialized app to add DOF effects to my pictures. THIS APP HAS UNEQUIVOCALLY REPLACED IT! WOW!!! Completely replaced BigLens for me. I spend literally hours using my other app after an iphoneography session, this app will save me hours of time, while producing a significantly better output in some cases. If even has an option to take two photos (after moving a bit to the right) to automatically figure out which parts should be in focus and which parts should be blurry. Incredible. As a professional photographer, I couldn't ask for anything more.... Well, except for full resolution output, the ability to turn off the flash, and the ability to import the two photos from the camera roll.

AfterFocus is the next best thing!. For those of us with older model iPhones without dual lenses. It’s very simple to draw a line for the focus and background areas, then set blur, bokeh, etc. Love it!

Ruins quality of photos. This app has the potential for great photo editing but no matter what setting I put it on it uploads the photos already slightly blurred. Basically running the quality of any photo uploaded into it. So waste of time and money.

Does not work on iOS 13 :(. Can’t blur photos fully on iOS 13 even after following instructions. Don’t recommend it.

Makes photos “POP”!. I’ve been using this app for years! And I absolutely love how it makes the subject of your photo really stand out and pop against the background - it excels at getting rid of a very noisy backgrounds. My favorite use is a single subject/portrait and then motion blur and gray out the background. I’ve gotten some fantastic photos this way. And if I have a very clean line around my subject I will put the “sticker” effect on for some drama and it just looks great. It would be nice to be able to change the color of that white sticker outline though - maybe a future enhancement? Really great app for what it does. Five stars all the way!! Very nice job developers!!

A Must Have for Photo Editors, Wonderful. This app is so easy to use!!! Beginners friendly and expert friendly. You can truly make some amazing adjustments if you take your time and even if you rush. I have a combination of settings that are my go to settings now for most images. The filters are really nice! Can use some IG style filters without having to go into IG and making a post. Love this app.. Suggestion: Like reviewers below mentioned, more precision would be great, it would also be nice to have other blur options, maybe some fun patterned blur designs (that's a little funky but why not). Any improvements and editing additions to the app will make it only more and more perfect, but it's already pretty amazing. Wonderful app!!!!

Does what it suppose to do.. Easy to use and blurs out the selected background. So it does what it supposed to do.

Nice App, missing one very useful feature. This is a good app for what it is trying to accomplish. My only gripe, something that would make the results of this app much more useful, would be a more precise selection method. It is very hard to 'paint' with a finger on a touchscreen when trying to achieve nice looking images. Touch ReTouch, for example, has a very nice 'zoom while painting' feature that if something similar were implemented here, would make this app hard to beat.

Because of this app I don’t have to buy a bigger or more expensive iPhone.. After using this app I realize I don’t have to buy a bigger or more expensive iPhone for Portrait mode. This thing does just as good if a job, if not better. I love it. Update: I have an iPhone X and I still prefer to use this because I can get my blurring details just right. Still absolutely love this app. QUESTION: where did the developers of this app go??? It hasn’t been updated in two years. This app is amazing I just want to see it get better.

Use it all the time!. I really like this app, I use it all the time. I have no photography skills or knowledge and this app (plus a few others) allow me to be super creative with my photos — I feel like a pro! I’ve even entered a few photo contests. Mahalo nui!

(I Just Deleted Big Lens!). My first thought was LYTRO CAMERA! Why? because just like Lytro cam it has a similar ability of setting where you want to have blur and where to have focus. About 10 minutes ago, Big Lens was my go to shallow DOF app. I would spend a very long time drawing mask in Big Lens app to set my focus area- a very tedious and frustrating process that often ends in crashes. The zooming in and out are not smart at all. After a long masking, the edges of my focus area would come out unnatural. With AfterFocus, it is absolutely easy as hell to do shallow DOF with masking method I have never seen before- just draw a squiggly line over the area you want focus and boom area magically masked. AfterFocus PLEASE PLEASE- full resolution output! We are on the 6th generation iPhone and your output remains at 3GS, not cool.

Degraded photo quality. I used to like this app, but after the latest update it only allows for uploading and saving photos at a reduced quality (max 2048 px). Will be looking for a better app now.

Immediately crashes, not iPad compatible. Under iOS 16, immediately crashes. Wish I could get the $1 back. Also is not an iPad app. Shows only vertical in iPhone sized window.

Turns photos grainy. I like the vignette option and the focus/blurring options but I don’t know what as soon as I upload a picture to edit it, or instantly turns my photo grainy. Very annoying. I would love it otherwise

Does an admirable job, but..... The app works as advertised, and my first attempt using the automatic method produced excellent results on a race car image where the background needed to have some motion blur added. The selection method works well, a very simple and effective method. My only beef is the final saved resolution of my 4256x2832 image was reduced to 1023x681. Bad form! That really needs to be fixed. This is a real deal-killer. It really limits the usefulness of a "touch-up" app like this. Otherwise, it is a good performer, and certainly better, wth a little practice, than the other brute force method apps that give you little or no control over what gets blurred.

NOT LIKE MY NIKON. Extremely hard to manage the details. Wish I had my dollar back!

After Focus. The most inovative focus selection app. The only drawback is that it can not save the image in original resolution. The highest resolution is still OK which is 1536 x 2048. I just hope that there will be an update to address this resolution issue.

Still one of the best app. Just wish the developer add ML engine to this app. Well Focos is the one now

Tops!. First go this app did what it was supposed to do. So simple and very cool (free) features.

Picture turns dark and loses resolution. The basic features of the app work fine, but the end result is a much darker picture with lower resolution than the original. I wouldn’t have purchased if I knew that the quality of the end product was this low.

Best of the bunch for adding bokeh. Of all the many apps I've tried which purport to be the best for adding depth blurs to photos, this is the stand out by far. The simple freehand-drawing + edge detection method for selecting foreground and background regions, plus the configurable blur styles for different scene types make this the only bokeh processing app worth having. Wonderful stuff.

Fun little app. This is a fantastic little App for post photo adjustment, love the blur or motion blur for the appropriate photo, works well :)

Nice. Nice little app that does what it says. :)

Focus area. Not sure why you cannot just have a focus line and then the rest of the image is blurred. Have to also delineate the background area seems unnecessary. Also the amount of blur is not really adjustable. Overall it is a useful tool.

Who needs an SLR?. I went out to buy an SLR camera. I couldnt find the one I wanted. Im glad I couldnt. This app is amazing. I am no longer buying a camera. With this app i have a 100% effective SLR sitting in my pocket. Well done!

Clumsy, Crashes. Don't bother with this. It's clumsy to use, and is not smart enough when feathering in the changes. It frequently crashes and you lose the changes you were working on.

Excellent tool. This is a truly great artists/photographers’ tool to have in one’s digital toolkit. I can use it on both photos and illustrations to highlight and suppress details creatively. Used with a stylus, the results can be stunning. I only wish that I could tweak the amount of blur but I suspect that I wouldn’t use that feature nearly as often as I think I would. All in all, a great product.

Love what it does. This app does exactly what it says and it's really easy to figure out. The controls are easy to use and to navigate and I like the added feature of filters (which aren't really necessary I this type of app). Only suggestion at this time: if there is some way to redesign the app icon, please do so. It's pretty ugly. Not the most important thing bit still, if it's sitting there on a homescreen it's better if it looks good.

Not what I was expecting. Thought this would be similar to blur feature on iphone X s......it wasn’t.

Hate it. Really really really unpleasant to use. Most of my pictures don’t work for this app, one out of 7 that I tried had a beautiful effect. Really rigid for an app that’s supposed to look natural. Do not get this!

It does not work like iPhones portrait mode. It’s something that I probably won’t use again 😂 idk if you want to buy it go for it but I wouldn’t recommend this on an iPhone

I was waiting for an app like this. Love it. Simple to select areas. Great results for everyday pic editing for the novice.

Still "Waiting". After days of "Waiting", I still can't access this app. Can't delete it to try and reload it. Just a greyed out icon! Not impressed.

Not as good as advertised. This app is pretty difficult to use. You have to have small and nimble fingers to get the effects advertised. Haven't once been able to edit a photo properly with this.

Ok. I like it but .. I have two Phones and it is working differently on iPhone and oppo . I like it more to use it on oppo it has more features

Pretty good. Probably the best blur effect app I've used. Looks like developer addressed a lot of the old complaints. Pretty simple to use. Not sure why some says it's hard. This app is pretty intuitive for a mobile app. And does a pretty good job of mimicking a DSLR camera's aperture. And then some. Works better on iPad pro with Apple Pencil. But still works well on iPhone. Compared an image blurred with this app, and iPhone X studio mode. And it's pretty close. Close enough that I've put off getting the iPX. Two issues though. 1. Accessing photos by having to keep going back to main screen, gets pretty redundant. Would be great to be able to access photos from work screen. 2. Being able to zoom in even more would be very beneficial. Especially for fine tuning.

A gem.. This app is a true gem. Smart mode works really well. Results look gorgeous. No shady upsells, or filtering of user reviews. Honest product sold by honest dev. This app makes my phone pics look like they were shot with an expensive camera lens, a large aperture and large sensor. Possible improvement: A smooth focus change on floor, going from soft to hard focus gradually, without visible transition. So to sum up: great job, devs!

Not bad with practice!. I originally give the app a lousy review.....but with a bit of practice I have been able to turn out a couple of decent pics. It does work in the manual mode, have not had a chance to try to master the auto mode. Will update when I try,

Great app. This really is a great app. Very focused (pardon the pun) but good at what it does. While I have many very sophisticated photo editing apps that in principle can do this effect, this is still the easiest way to accomplish it. My biggest request is that the developer would add native iPad support. To those who have problems with the precision of the masking process, I find that I can get as detailed as I wish if I magnify the image sufficiently. One other nit is I wish it was more clear what resolution the app is working at or saving the photo too. All-in-all a really great little app that I keep coming back to, but please add an iPad version.

Excellent App. I use the app to set the focus and out of focus areas. It is very easy to use. The results are excellent. This is one of the most useful apps I own out of the hundreds that I've bought.

Cool App, but.... I really like what this app does for creating distance/perspective effects, but it keeps closing every time I go to save my final image. Consequently all work and time spent on image is lost. Please fix bug!!! iPhone 4s user

Awesome now that edges are fixed!. Updated: with the new fix, the app is so much better because the images no longer look out of place with the smoothing effect or the edges. 5 stars!

Best Ever!. I looked around for awhile to find an app that could do exactly what this one does... And it makes it so simple! You can let the app auto select or do what I do and pick and choose what is selected. If you want to add "depth of field" this app is for you.

I just love it. I've been using this app for years now, from my old Samsung phone to my iPhone 6S, and it works like it should! One thing, please fix the camera, it just shows black screen when i try to use the feature. Editing existing pictures are just flawless though!

Good. This app is pretty good. It does give the focus illusion, and the image does return back to it's original, clear resolution after it's exported. The only reason I gave it a 4/5 is because the edges appear rough when the image is close-up.

A photo app that is not duplicative!. This app is useful. I wish I could use it to cut out objects as well since it is almost doing that already. Anyway. Good app!

An essential iPhone app. I consider this to be among the few apps that can be deemed "essential" for all iPhone owners. The app does everything it advertises and more, and does so with absolute refinement. Wonderful. 5 stars and highly recommended.

Useful BUT.... I use this app to make stickers. I useful, however, it always blurs right outside of the sticker. It's very annoying. Is there a way to turn it off? If not, please make it so you can. Also, I would have liked a trial version for free. But I like it in general.

Fantastic App!. Takes your pictures from being a snapshot to creative photography.

This is fantastic!. This is fantastic for iPhone camera users. Brings back some of that traditional photography look. Simulates an SLR lens with variable aperture. Gives sense of depth to iPhone photos. I've only been toying with it for a couple hours now, but I love it. And it's fun to use!

Fast. Easy. Works great.. AfterFocus isn't iPhone 5 optimized, but is really, really easy to use. The smart focus works quite well. Only complaint is the lack of full-sized image saving. No reason not to have this!

Great App, Needs Higher Resolution Canvas. This app is very impressive and does exactly as advertised, plus more. I was very impressed with the quality of the final image and how easy it is to choose the areas you want to focus. However, the app does require faster processing and needs the area in which the photo is worked on to be higher resolution. Otherwise, it is an excellent app! I highly recommend it!

been looking for something like this a long time!!. If you are on the fence about getting this, do it! It is one of the best effects, iPhone photos look sharper and have depth of field! Make the effect happen while taking the photo and it would be the only photo app I would ever use!!

Outstanding. This is a great app to add polish to iPhone photography and make your shots look more like they came from an SLR camera. The developer builds pretty great apps with a lot of attention to the detail of their work. Interface is great and quality is great.

I like. Really nice what this app does, I have in expensive dslr and the DOF on this app is great. Like that it has color effects to. Love taking pics in b&w. There seems to be on problem, The resolution of the pictures when sent to other sites seems to be a little Pixelated. Other then that would of gave it five stars.

Don't waste your money. The majority of reviews on this were right, I don't know why I didn't pay attention to them. This app is complete crap. There isn't an auto "smart" focus, you have to manually draw lines (like in old school Paint) and then it blurs everything outside of the crooked line you draw. So that your image looks like a kindergartener blurred it. They stole my money and I'd like it back.

Worthy purchase.. This app is excellent. Easy to use, with a good balance of smart and manual tools. This adds a definite pop to any photo you take with your iPhone. For the people who say it doesn't work right, the app is only as good as the user.

Great for focus!. I love it, it works very well and is very very easy and intuitive. Please update for the larger phones, and also add Photos app integration? It would be awesome to open my photos app and just hit more and access the functions like I can photoshop express and such.

Wow!. This app does everything that it promises to do and more. I had no problem saving my edited photos to my camera roll whatsoever. Highly recommended by someone who has innumerable camera apps!

Don't download. I found this app via an update for photoshake. I thought it was going to be amazing, just because I love photoshake. Boy, was I wrong! I love that it sharpens pictures, but when I save it, it saves the original image! I've tried the bokeh effect, and that doesn't even work! I've emailed twice to complain, and no reply. This app is $.99 but the worse $.99 ever spent! I would also give it 0 zero stars, but I had to put 1 up

Yes!!!. I've been using a similar app called Big Lens, but this has a few other features BL does not. Such as the option of a Motion Blur and the Auto Select for focusing on specific areas works even faster and more efficient. Very cool ;)

So easy!. Can't believe how fast, easy, and cool this is. If you're having trouble, you might have turned off the instructions. Turn them back on in settings.

Wish quality was better!. The resolution quality on photos needs to be fixed. Other than that, it's a great app that saves times and gives great results.

Lovely app, simple interface, great results, but.... I agree with other reviewers that we need an iPad version supporting larger images and higher quality previews. If you apply this app to a larger image, it will get resized to 2048 max. Quality of the end result is much better than the preview.

The best and most realistic. Still the best and most realistic bokeh effect on the App Store. The new icon is much more attractive. Only complaint is render time for full res takes a while but on the new 5s it's noticeably faster.

Incredible. For the most part photos turn out amazing, I can hardly believe they were taken on an iPhone. What keeps it from being 5 stars is that you can't zoom in more while drawing on the areas you want in/out of focus. Also the bokeh feature is nice but sometimes doesn't show on the finished photo like it does in the preview. Otherwise great app.

Perfect! (nearly). This app produces amazing results with minimal effort involved. Between this and Camera+, my needs are fulfilled in iPhonography! If I had any wishes for improvement, it would be to save at the original resolution (this is top priority as it only saves at a max of 2048 res), and to save the original photos EXIF data.

I love this App!!!. Afterfocus is brilliant at helping you create wonderful unique pics. I really wish they had an iPad version, I would pay extra for it. My favorite photo App in years!!!!

Pretty Bad. 1 stars for the double photo feature which is at least interesting. But basically this app represents one of the worse wastes of a dollar I've ever known. The feather effect needs massive improvement in order to create a smooth transition between zones of focus. The finger swiping option is far superior to the automatic one for blocking out areas and that in of itself is still terrible. For a specific image this can work really well. But not for most and a headshot of a person with even a strand of hair not greased down on their scalp, forget it!

Unbelievable Bokeh. This app amazes me. The best thing about DSLRs for me is the shallow depth of field and bokeh (blurry background)that it produces. This app does it beautifully with any picture. Works best with lights in the background. I love it!!!

This is amazing!. I got this app from vsauce and I was not disappointed! Saving a picture at 2480p resolution? I think yes! I DEFINITELY recommend. This is crazy for an iPhone especially. 😇

I'm a convert!. I used other "DSLR DoF" adding apps until I found one that worked well. I used Big Lens for some time until a recent update just made them look shady...(IMO). So the hunt was on for a better app and I found After Focus. I read reviews and watched a tutorial and decided to commit the $1. Glad I did!!! Best DoF simulator I've used! I love the zoom capability to get the small details right and the fact that you can do a natural blur fade is awesome! Keep up the good work! You deserve these 5 stars!

Best $1 I've Spent. I love this app! I can now go back and edit pics of my 13 month old. They look so much better! I could not find some of the more basic functions, such as cropping. I currently use another app for that.

Take iPhone Pics to the next Level. I’ve been using AfterFocus for a couple of years. It’s one of my favorite photo apps because it works and it’s quick. It adds the depth of field effect to iPhone pics so well, you may find yourself importing photos taken with a “regular” camera into your iPhone so you can get the same effect. Highly recommended.

Easy to use. Works great, easy to use. Would recommend if you are looking for a quick way to blur out the background or whatever area you want.

Nice app. Really nice app. You can really make people or whatever really stand out using this app. It's very quick and does it's job. Like any of these type apps it's hard to get every part of something in focus but it's better and faster than most other apps.

This app is GENIUS!! Exactly what I wanted!!. I've been looking for an app that adjusts depth of field and THIS IS IT!! Every other app only lets you choose a circle or some variation of a selected shape. AF has finally given us amateur iPhone users an option to create that DSLR look! Highly recommended!
