Sonar Ruler App Description & Overview

What is sonar ruler app? Sonar Ruler is a winner in the Best App Ever Awards - "Most innovative use of iPhone hardware" category!

The Amazing New Sonar Ruler is an experimental app that uses echoes to measure distances with your iPhone!

* It uses the same principles that dolphins use to find food! *

It sends a short pulse from the speaker and measures how long that pulse takes to bounce off of something and return to the phone. It then estimates how far away you are.

>> Impress your friends with what this unique app can accomplish using only an iphone! <<

Ϟ GIZMODO.com:
"that's a damned neat trick for a phone to be able to do."

Features:
* Sonic distance measurement up to 60 feet
* Set Units to feet, inches, or meters
* Custom saved settings for measuring in different environments

If you're a teacher, this app is a great way to teach students the principles of sonar, and how sound propagates through air.

Works fine. For the people who complain a few tips. 1. It works on sound. 2. Don't talk or have people talking while using it. 3. Don't have your tv loud. 4. Keep your hands still while in use. I tried showing people at a party and it would not work. Music was blasting. So try to use it in a quiet place and I'm sure the results will be better.

Not perfect but worth the cost!. I don't write a lot of reviews but I absolutely support this app and I think you should too. This app isn't perfect but what it is trying to achieve pushes the bounds of the technology for a scientific purpose. It also has amazing educational possibilities. The price is the lowest one can charge for an app and I truly believe money should go to fund a project like this. Kudos to the dev team. -Andrei Freeman 30 yr Apple 3rd party software developer.

Meh. I know it's measuring something because I can see things change on the screen, but for me it is nothing more than a novelty app. Maybe with some refinement it might get Better.

works as advertised. This app works as advertised. It has surprising accuracy at around +/- .5" or better. There are a lot of options, but it is surprisingly easy to use. Very little adjustment is needed for most measuring. The interface is good, but some components (sliders) could stand to be larger for easier manipulation. To get good measurements, all you have to do is place the orange dot at the peak of the wave, and locate the blue dots around the larger portions of the wave. Some adjustments are needed to measure thing that are very close (under 1 foot). The most difficult part is analyzing the results and throwing away the measurements that aren't correct. The correct one tends to stay steady, while the phantom results come and go. Overall, the app is quite an amazing utilization of the iphone hardware.

Not working for me. I've tried adjusting the settings but it's just not working at all for me. I hear the chirping but it just doesn't give me a reliable reading. I can hold it very level and stable at a wall 6 feet away and it just keeps flashing a bunch of seemingly random values anywhere from 1 foot to 10 feet. I'm on a first gen iPhone.

Suprisingly accurate. iPhone 3G- accurate as long as you keep it level and at a 90 degree angle to the surface you are measuring. If you have a first gen save your money. It will not work with the lower quality mic. Great app, thanks!

Huh??. All settings are proper as to the HELP button and a box about 8 inches away is reading 27 to 29 inches. FAIL. On a longer distance it is reading 46 to 60 inches without me moving. What gives??? And now I see on the first screen that this for "Entertainment ONly" Nice way to rip people...I mean make money.

Execlent App. I've tested the accuracy of Sonar Ruler in several different setting and as long as you have watched the video you will achieve excellent results.

Amazing! Works as advertised.. I'm amazed at how great this appworks. You usually fall with in the .5 to 1 inch of the actual distance. For .99 cents it's worth the price. They need to come out with one that plots out the room for you. Echo location for the win!

Get the other sonar apps called pocketmeter. I bought both apps and found pocketmeter to work much better and user friendly. The ui for pocketmeter was much easier to use. Currently I deleted this app from my iPhone.

Very intriguing app. This is really a well done app. The interface may not be the slickest, but it does exactly what it sets out to do. For those having trouble, consider a few things: 1)Sound reflects best off of hard flat surfaces, so trying to measure a distance to something absorptive or irregularly shaped may not work well. 2) Setting the air temperature will indeed affect your measurements. 3) Cupping your hand under the microphone and speaker as shown in the video will increase the volume of the clicks by focusing the sound from the phone; think of your hand as a crude megaphone or acoustic horn. This increases the signal to noise ratio and will increase the accuracy of the app. 4) Consider the ambient noise in the room. If you are trying to measure in a noisy environment, your signal to noise ratio will be poor and results will be inaccurate. In closing I really am impressed with this; I would not have thought that the built in mic had the sensitivity to detect reflections from those distances. Well done.

Do not waste $0.99 if it is for iPhone 4s. Absolute waste of money. I have tried it in totally quite locations, keeping it level, and other things that should have improved results, but no luck. The closest to the correct measurement was within 2ft and that was in a noisy environment. Others say it worked on older versions of the iPhone. I could be doing something incorrect, but I have not found the correct procedure to make it work on iPhone 4S.

impress your friends. with how much cooler your iphone is than another smart phone. this seems to work because the mic and speaker are next to each other or thats what i understood from watching the intro video. i dont know any other of the smart phone that have this.

Nice work. I had this same idea a while ago, I figured someone would make it

broken. Used to work great, but it no longer works on the newer iPhones running iOS 8.4. It runs and seems to be listening, but it no longer makes the chirps it needs to listen for. None of the adjustments seem to make a difference. I tried setting back to default values. Tried removing and reinstalling. Tried rebooting the iPhone.

Tips. Their are really only tow problems with this app one is that by it's self the speaker on the iPhone isn't built to be. A sonar but if hook it up to a loader speaker like those $8 ones at wallgreens it seams to beater but the speaker and your mike obviously have to be facing the flat surface at the sam space I also hate the guess bar thing come on! But this was what I was looking for

Wow!. Amazing! You'll actualy see the distance change as you move closer, and further from the wall. Reminds me of what Bruce Wane's phone did in the last Batman movie! Only way to make it better, would be if you could map the room out, by standing in the center and turning in a circle. 

Remove the case!. I have an iPhone 3G, and I thought the app wasn't working. Well, I removed the phone from its leather case, and now it works GREAT! The software seems to be very sensitive to how the phone is being held and whether it is in any kind of protective cover or case.

Works Great on 3Gs. Amazing. I was not expecting this to work, but had little to lose because of the low price. It is accurate and works just as the description says. Make sure to watch the video for instructions.

VERY COOL APP!?!. App works like it should, accurate, and easy to use. What more do you want!?! If you are skeptical (like I was), buy it, it really works!?!

Very accurate. Down to the decimal accuracy. Just point it at a wall and get the distance. Once it is calibrated right it is very accurate!

Great toy if instructions are read. Lots of fun to mess around with.

Kewl but missing one thing .... As you are adjusting for the temp, you need to set the calibration using a known distance. All in all this took a couple of minutes learn to use, but then it worked well. The video helps a lot.

Doesn't work. Not much to say: it simply doesn't work. You can get an echo from time to time to register on the display, but anyway the reading isn't stable etc.. useless.

its like having a lab in hand. its a little tricky to use and i had to practice for a bit with how to cup my hand to make the optimal sound, but once i got the hang of it i found it very accurate

Not working with iPhone 4. This app worked great on my iPhone 3G, but doesn't seem to work with my iPhone 4. Sounds like signal is bleading from the microphone to the speaker, causing feedback and preventing it from working properly. Please update for iPhone 4+

Not ready for prime time.. To the developer's credit, this app is described as "experimental." Not so ceditable, he is charging a buck for us to bankroll his experiment. It is a fascinating concept, and I hope that eventually the practice will catch up with the theory. For now, I found the results to be off by 10 to 15%, so, far from good enough to put my tape measure away. And, the settings seemed needlessly complex. I understand the need to adjust the temperature, but the frequency, filter, and chirp values should be optimized by the developer instead of the user, it seems to me. And, don't be fooled by the "point and shoot" screenshot with the purple waves measuring 45 inches. The instructional video that comes with the app strongly suggests a much more nerdy stance (scroll right to How to Hold the Phone, above). FWIW, I used this on a 3G iPhone with the latest OS.

Awesome Concept. What a neat idea, I showed this to my kids to explain to them how sound waves travel through the air. Great 'real world' science stuff!

This is quite interesting. If you are into science and learning more about the world around you, I would recommend checking this out. The developer does a good job of explaining the principles inside the application. Cool!

Crash within 3 seconds. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling on my iPhone 6 several times but the program exits after 3 seconds every time. Would have been interested to "experiment".

Accurate, awesome vintage looking science app. Awesome. It's actually accurate! And it has a cool 90s vintage PC science software look to it. Whoever said it was "unfinished" is wrong.

Pretty Accurate, cool interface. I measured my garage from like 15 feet away and checked it with a measuring tape, it was pretty close. I had to change the default temperature since I'm out in Phoenix and it's pretty hot.

Far from 'accurate' & I have 3gs. Anyone saying this is accurate is either lying or a fool. Bounces all over the place even after taking the time to follow directions to a T. Needs development & I'm not sure it will ever get to a stage where it can accurately b described as accurate

Review. Interesting. Seems to work most of the time. More of a "impress the Boss" type of app

Guess the distance. A bit tricky to use and the sound setting has to be at the highest level to give any reasonable reading. Shows multiple readings possibly due to reflections from multiple walls. So, accept the one you think is true which brings you back to guessing...something you could do without spending any money.

Have a Go With This one,,. IT's like a bat or something... uses echoes, you can hear the clicks.. pretty coo

Buy It Now. This is a fun and truly innovative application. It works just fine. I used it to measure how much speaker wire I needed to cut from the spool, and for the first time didn't end up with an extra 3 feet of it around the speakers to trip on. However, you shouldn't rely on it if you're planning to build new kitchen cabinets. Well worth the single dollar.

Very good!. App works great to be in beta stage seriously anyone complaining about aesthitics and it not working need to read descriptions and reviews to see it doesn't work well with 2G and it's in BETA.

Good concept. Not enough polish.. I nabbed this app on an impulse buy after seeing it on a particular website. It is sadly, not more than a novelty at this time. A short video plays on first launch, leaving you with only the faintest idea how it works. The user interface was unintuitive but detailed. This app could use a LOT more work into ambient filtering, as it was largely useless due to interference from just about anything. Hopefully, a more concise tutorial and intuitive interface can be worked in. Using an iPhone 3G S

I love these things. I always wanted one of these for the iPhone. You need to experiment with it and get used to how the results come back. Sometimes it's a bit tricky to figure out where on the spectrum the sound is coming back (most likely because other noise)

Sonar Ruler. This sonar ruler application was very confusing and frustrating . What a waste of $0.99. I deleted this App. To bad the seller did not provide the video explaining how it works prior to having to buy it. If I had viewed the video first I would have declined buying this sonar ruler. I think the person explaining how to use the sonar ruler on the video seemed a bit confused as to how to use it.

Could not get it to work at all. I read a bunch of reviews, both good and bad and was fully aware of the fact that this app really falls into the experimental category. But the idea is exceedingly cool and this particular app seemed to be the one to get. As per the author's instructions, I viewed the instructional video and read all of the documentation twice. Nonetheless, I was unable to get the app to work at all. It never gave me an accurate measurement even once. In fact, it never really gave me any measurements at all that were not just noise. Undeterred, I read the docs again and attempted to do a manual configuration of the app. Unfortunately, if you're lucky enough to find the information on the "custom" calibration for the app, the docs are obtuse and don't really explain what the settings in question really do. As a last resort, I contacted the author through the contact link on their website (which contains almost no information about the app itself). It's been two weeks now with no response whatsoever. I'm sure this sort of technology for the iPhone will improve over time, but at the moment neither the app or the company are ready for prime time.

Works well. Worked fine for me right out of the box. I used the default setting and it was fairly accurate. I would not use it to cut carpet but certainly good for estimating.

Great App!. Wow, a sonar ruler that works as advertised! As long as you dont need accuracy down to like a tenth of an inch, its perfect. I use it for quick room measurements and the like, and it works like a champ. Great job!

Really works!. I'm not going to lie, at first I thought this wouldn't work very well, but with my testing this app was accurate to around 0.5 inches!! Amazing! Great job with the app!

Awesome!. I bought this app simply on the cool factor (and I -never- buy apps). Great job! Docked a star because the custom settings change the estimated distance over way too high of a range. If docs were included to explain the calculations so that accuracy could be increased this would be a 5 star.

Might as well throw a buck in the toilet.. Cool idea, but i can guess a distance and get a more accurate measurement. Ever after spending way too much time screwing around with the settings, and holding the the phone just like they say, the readings were all over the place. In the time it takes to get a somewhat close reading, you could run to the store and buy a tape. A novelty at best. I have a 3Gs.

Nah. Too much tweaking required (find the "spike, make sure the 2 blue balls are on either side with the yellow ball in the miiddle Etc.). I lost one of the blue balls within seconds and couldn't find it -I don't care enough to go through a learning curve- interesting concept, but decidedly NOT user friendly

Works. It works as described but make sure you watch the video when the app starts. It tells you how to hold the phone and what you can measure etc.. So it works, but it would be cooler if it could measure people or small things also.

This ruler is very accurate. To all those people who have first gen iPhones leaving 1-star reviews: THIS APP ISN'T MADE FOR YOUR PHONE!! The first gen iPhone's microphone isn't nearly as good as those in the 3G and 3GS. It is not as sensitive to various frequencies. I moved into a new apartment a few days ago and this app has worked great. It measures rooms to within a couple inches, which is good enough for positioning furniture. I checked the values with a real tape measure. My wife is amazed. Just make sure you watch the intro video to calibrate your device before using and you're good to go. What these developers were able to achieve on the iPhone really demonstrates the capability of this platform while also capturing the spirit of innovation that, in my opinion, is what make Apple products great. Their drive and determination to do the seemingly impossible is amazing to me. My freaking cell phone is now a tape measure. For real. Like a bat or dolphin. It's insane. I love science.

Doesn't Work At All.. Don't waste your money, I went to sync this to my iPod, and it said it wasn't compatible! And I have version 2.2.2 or something on my iPod Touch! I want my money back!

It can work. Used with care in an environment that doesn't confuse it too much with extra echos it can and does work, with tolerable accuracy. You have to use common sense and pick the peak that is likely to be correct. Be careful, though, I'm pretty sure it crashed my phone once, to a very solid lockup but no data loss after forced restart.

Junk. How do I get my money back on this piece of junk?

DOES NOT WORK. Pity you can't vote 0 stars, absolutely USELESS. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY Yes I watched the instructional video.

amazing. Having recently seen Siobhan live in concert I am amazed at her talents. She will be a lassie to watch and follow as her talents develope. she has a great future! Well done, lass!!

This is a toy.. Great for telling people about, as the concept sounds impressive. However, this app doesn't deliver. Don't bother.

Yes, it works. This app really does work. Don't expect miracles, its accuracy level allows for "rough planning", not exact measurements. Being sound/echo based obviously there are limits, noisy, windy or open spaces (without a barrier to point at) are not going to be very successful. Watch the video to maximise its success, if you don't do some of the physical actions noted in it then you won't get a result. One limitation that I feel should be corrected, and is the reason for 4 not 5 stars is that it currently only works horizontally, vertical is pretty much a fail. I have no idea about the maths involved with using echo location to determine distance so maybe there is something really hard with vertical. Anyway, this is a fantastic and innovative use of a phone and no doubt benefits from the physical design of the iPhone (location of mic and speaker). I hope the developers continue to improve it (actually it just occurred that if either mic or speaker have been effected, maybe by water the results would be mushed). The only thing that I imagine would be more accurate is if a tools company make a dock connector accessory that does laser range finding.

Brilliant. Works well

Fascinating. This is not a real utility as background noise will interfere with measurement. However, it is a fascinating experimental tool and one of the more innovative apps out there.

Does not work.. This is a scam. Doesn't work at all

Great idea ... shame about the execution. The application certainly looks nice. You start the application, the phone makes clicking sounds at regular intervals and a distance measurement appears on the screen. Unfortunately, the measurement bears absolutely no relation to the one being measured. For a 'ruler', that's a pretty major flaw.

Worst App I've Bought. This is the worst app i've ever bought, and needs a major update to change this opinion. Does not work at all.

Works surprisingly well. Even if it isn't very useful, it is really cool.

Meh.. Hardly worth the 99 cents. More of a curio than an actual tool.

Me. Not much use if noise level is above whisper.

Useless. This sounds cool on paper but the app is worthless.

Interesting, but couldn’t get it to work. Bought it just out of curiosity, and it looks like it’s doing something. There are a lot of adjustments you can do, and I didn’t spend too much time trying to figure it out. It seems to lock in at the same distances regardless of where it’s used. I’m wondering if my older phone (iPhone 6) just doesn’t have what it takes.

Not compatible, fix please!. Does not sync with my iPod Touch 4G. It has a microphone... Please update!! I paid a buck and can't use it, partly my fault though. Update plz

Does not work. I tried but it does not work.

don't buy. Not even worth the 99 cents. Just made noise and light show, no real answer.

Not For Measuring Anything. Maybe good for a teaching tool, or to entertain/impress your friends. Too unreliable to depend on if you actually need to measure anything.

WOW!!!. I bought this thinking it was a joke app. I was proven wrong. It was accurate to the inch. AMAZING!!!

Sorry but...........No. At times it can be within 5-10in but I don't event think with the new iph4 and it's noise cancellation feature that it was developed right. My experience... When at 12in away it reads 26-36in. At 36in exactly it's 40's to 50's

piece of crap. This doesn't work at all and I'd like my money back.

Does not work. Doesn't do the one thing it's supposed to do. Will not be purchasing any app associated with Laan Labs in the future.

Junk. Don't waste your time.

Don't buy. Waste of time and money just shuts off immediately after opening app

sonar ruler. the new application does not give out correct readings

Proof of concept. Seems to work well enough, Nice job.

????. Video has nothing to do with this app.

Hmmm. Watched the video and just doesn't really work well. Not accurate.

Awesome. Without a doubt the coolest iPhone app for only a buck!

its great. Its awesome app. lil had to calibrate but works great

Nice App!. Educational, interesting and very well done.

the ultimate geek toy. love the science behind this

Saudi Arabia. Sonar Ruler The program does not open and close the same

now my iphone is even cooler. just love showing this off to friends

Very accuate!. Works like a charm if you follow the directions!

Need to make it simpler. Too many bells and whistles. Oh and it needs to work before anything!

So geeky it doesn't work.. Waste of buck.

Great app.. Like it.

Broken!. Used to work fine, now no chirping sound is emitted at all on an iPhone 5S. Help video URL is broken. Any one else gotten it to work recently?

Doesn't work. Always shows the same distance - about 2 feet. Pretty useless.

click click click. great to actually be able to hear sonar in action

Crap. Don't waste your money

Defunct. Checked in on this once-cool app. Crashed the whole phone, forcing a hard restart.

save the coins for pop instead. Save the coins for pop instead. Gadget that is useless!

needs a flat surface. works great indoors against a flat surface though i had some problems with it outside - great app overall

Won't Open on iPhone 6. Bought in October 2016. Will not open on iPhone 6 running 10.0.2. Contacted developer but no response! Want my money back.

a bit complicated. the ui has a lot of information but i like the colors

Does. Not work. Period.

Nice App. It worked fine for me!

Sonar ruler. I would not recommend this. It is difficult and not accurate.

Update. Need to update for iPhone 4 Retina.

Forget it.. Great idea meets impractical application.

Not working for me. I tried to use it but it is not working for me. There is no instruction how to use, or calibrate.

Sonar Ruler. This is just useless. It's snake oil.

very experimental. its really more of a toy than accurate , but i love it anyway

Doesn’t work on iPhone 5 with latest system. after updating the system it does not work at all, it never worked well, but now it doesn’t work at all

Cute idea but poor implementation. Not often even close to accurate Easily confused by background noise Sonar works in many other cases so this may be a proof of the 80/20 rule.
