Elegant and expressive. I immediately made music I loved with this app, and wished I could make a longer piece...maybe I'm missing something but 8 pattern seems like a limitation.

Im having some issues. Im not sure if it is because im using the old iphone but the sound is cutting a lot. Is there anyway to fix this?

Best toneboard app. Update to my last review: I figured out how to adjust layer volumes... Duh. The longer I play with this the more brilliant I realize it is... So so so so so much better than any other Tenori-on app out there- this should be getting so much more attention from the App store than Melodica, Toneboard, Toneapp... There's just really no comparison, this one has so many more features, it's like trying to compare a bicycle to a Ferrari. I can't wait for the update! More sounds, mp3 and/ or wav export, and time sig control will make this app beyond fantastic!

The. It's also a bit simpler, as he said, because of the views. I actually really like it. You can upload your own instruments, theoretically, but the ones that are here are pretty good too [especially the downloadable ones: there's a steinway in there, and a waldorf synth that's very nice]. Friendly w/live gigs and just a very nice package. I bought this after paying $1 for Melodica, was worried I'd regret this but after I saw all the options and setup [on the iPad, anyways] I think it was a bit of a steal. Hopeful the dev will keep updating, and maybe this review will give him[/get him via other purchases!] money to make the decision easier. :P. CoreMIDI would be kind of nice but the tempo option makes it less necessary ... Also, not being $40 like the Aurora Studio thing is ... very nice. No way I'm paying $40 for an app, at least not yet, even with all those features.

One of the best iPod music apps!. *** TIP *** Turn on "Note placing assistance" in the prefs to make selecting notes easier. It makes a HUGE difference (should be on by default). Great deal on a great sequencer. You can share songs and import new sounds from within the program. Some nice additions would be: - Some control over the samples (decay, volume, etc..) - More than 8 patterns - More FX types! Keep up the good work! :-)

Soundgrid review. This app is amazing. One of my favorites!

Sweet. To select a note press, hold and move to wanted spot release, ... Awesomely fun app more grids would be better and to keep the ringtones for iPhone...

Great potential. Would love to see audio input to use as sounds.

Having a lot of fun with this.. A well-designed musical tool that is more complex than it appears at first glance. For instance, the ability to set loop ranges for each pattern means being able to play a 7 note sequence on top of 12 if so desired. There is a nice selection of instruments available, but of course I want more. (Note to developer: how does one access the web interface mentioned in the description, in order to create instruments?) Another example: adjustable feedback and timing of the delay effect, either in milliseconds or in multiples of a 32nd note ... and fractional multiples if you want. 😎 Very glad to have found this gem.

Very very fun!. Beats out melodica any day of the week.

The button for patterns is not working. Not sure if the button for patterns is working. Like I click it and nothing happens. So I am stuck being able to only play the first pattern and it will not continue playing onto the 2nd one.

Yes!!!. As an update to my last review, this app just became one of the best music apps available. Seriously, it's that good. Now that it has a usable musical scale and tempo control it's endlessly entertaining, and still really easy to use. But as if the last update (v1.1) didn't add enough, they're now promising mp3s, ringtones and sound recording. Don't even bother with the other tone pad type apps. This one's in a different league. I'd still like to see a major scale in the app still, but the new one's good.

love the new release, except.... The interface is not as receptive to touch. Please make it like the older version. I have to tap 3 or 4 times to get a note, and then it's often to the right of where I tapped. The old version was perfect. LOVE the new recording ability.

Non stop. Nice app!

Very, very gnarly ! ! !. Just do yourself a favor, and get it! This just might be the best Tenori-type app on the iPhone. And for the price. You can't beat it! Do it!!!!

great app. as step sequencers go it's one of the best and i keep coming back to it because it's got a great ui and live gig friendly. wish it had midi support... but you can't always get what you want.

Amazing!. What an amazing piece of software for the iPhone! The features and function of this app can usually be expected in dedicated sequencer hardware. Anyone with or without a musical ear will love spending lots of time on this app.

Really friggin' cool!. All this needs is MP3 export feature and it's gold!

Beyond Perfect!. This was great before,,, Now with this update it is the best app out there and certainly the best value for the money. Don't listen to negatives, some people want there hands held,,,, just get in there and have fun with this thing it is great' Best money spent in app store! If you are worried about the 5 bucks ,,, at least try the lite version first! Love it!!

Great Fun. This is a cool easy to understand music app. The support is awesome and unlike many of the claims to quickly update features, these guys actually do it. They are committed to the product and look to tweak it so that its a better product for us. Please keep the new sound banks coming.

What a great app!. I love this application! It works great on my iPod Touch and after watching the tutorial on the developer's website, it ridiculously easy to use. The only thing holding me back from making incredible music with this app is how little I know about music theory! If you love music and enjoy making beats and melodies, look no further than Soundgrid! Especially while it only costs $0.99! The developer could easily justify charging more just because of how well this app is designed and how intuitively it is used! :)

Really Good!. This is the best Tone Matrix out there! I'll buy more Sound Banks if you want to make them available... but the promised updated sounds are a good start. I'd love sound attack and decay controls, and of course a MIDI export (one layer per MIDI channel?) function. It's one of my favorite music apps... you should port it to the big MIDI apps on the Mac as a VSTi / AU. Thanks

Static. This app is very basic. It is inexpensive, but the samples sound quite bad. There is horrible static on the samples when using headphones. There are not many samples to work with and the sounds get old quick. I would advise saving your money and getting a better app that has more possibilities. I may end up deleting this, because of the sound quality.

Promising but needs work. I’m an avid Tenori-On user. The fact that in SoundGrid each instrument needs to have its own scale chosen independently is pretty much an annoyance that breaks the app for me :/

Lots of potential, but. On my phone, it's very difficult to add or remove the notes. Too frustrating to be useful.

Fun and overlooked. I have owned most of the matrix sequencers in this class including the expensive ones. There were honestly just too many to try them all and I had to draw the line somewhere. I wish I had picked this one up a couple of years back. I bet I would have had fun with it. It does not seem to have some of the modern features I would consider necessary for my workflow but it you are on a budget and want to try one of these grid style pattern sequencers, this one has some useful capabilities. With a bit of love from the developer this could be a nice alternative to the rather expensive apps that it is similar to. Seeing as how it hasn't had an update since 2011 I am not sure we will see that.

Wonderfully Simplistic and Complex. If that made any sence at all to you, get this app! I had never tried making music before, but I am on the road to being the next Mozart because of this app. Only one concern; 8 boxes is a bit short. Perhaps 16 or 24 boxes for more complete songs... EDIT: Umm, your scales are wrong. Lines 10 and 11 on most of the instruments are switched. This is quite disabling and rather disappointing. Please fix this quickly.

Absolutely superb. This is the most intuitive electronic music app I've come across in the App Store, and it delivers plenty of bang for your buck. The import/export options make are a huge plus, and it's layout actually lends itself surprisingly well to live performances. There are quite a few of instruments, as well as the option to create your own, but I really, really, hope the developers add more.

Great App. Great app, only one complaint... Currently, you can onIy trigger one point on the grid at a time. It really needs simultaneous touch triggering methods for better live performance and efficiency.

Best so far. I have all the other tone boards and this is the best of them.

Difficult. I don't use this app anymore. It's rather diffucult to select the individual tiles becuase they are so small. More often than not, I usually end up tapping the wrong tile and having to delete it, then tap yet another wrong tile in the process. This either needs a zoom feature or multiple panels of bigger tiles. I like the save feature and the numerous tones from which to choose, but this app is simply no fun to use because it's frustrating to control.

There goes melodica, pakel & tone whatever. Best in class. Bar none. By far. Every way: color graphics sound complexity ease of use

freezes. I really want to give this a higher rating, but I can't even make a new grid or download a grid made by other users without the app freezing.

It’s back!. It is back. Reposting my 5 star rating. I made some awesome and surprising tracks with this back in the day. Doing it again right now. I was amazed to see it available again. Thanks.

Promising, but. The demos looked great, but it's extremely difficult to accurately use the touchscreen to make your notes. Often repeated presses bring nothing up, or place the note inaccurately. This on new 3rd gen ipod. If this can be fixed, I think this app would be a lot of fun.

So Close. This really is a 3 star app, but I'll give 4 for a nice effort. You can make some good jams, and maybe a ring tone or two... but the tone bank is bankrupt. Really need to add an acustic guitar, a few more drum kits, and maybe a bass... moral of the story, all of the beats end up sounding similar because you have to use the same 4 or 5 tone banks.

i want to like this app. This app is o.k. There's a nice feature that shows "ghost impressions" of all the notes being played. So often with these synth composing programs, you hear what you've programed, but you have to be on the right screen to see where it's coming from. Editing notes is difficult. How you physically place the notes on the "dots" is way too small. I spend more time adding and deleting wrong notes just because the touch size is so tiny. Very frustrating, I would like this app a lot more if i could just tap the note i want without having to tap it 8 more times to delete and re-enter all the mis-taps. You need miniature fingers to program this synth. 2nd, the tone. The instruments sound alright. Pretty electronic. But there really aren't very many choices. The layers are confusing. It keeps switching between layers when editing and playing, and i still don't know why? While editing layer one, I'll swipe up to a different instrument (a feature i like a lot), but somehow the layer will change to layer two? isequence, isyn, and/or electron are still my top three synth composing programs.

Most advanced tone matrix app. to date.. Would really love to see more sounds. Also, like other tone matrix programs it would be nice to be able to slide a finger to toggle the tones across the board and maybe buttons to go between the tracks or a multi touch slide to go between tracks. Hopefully the new update adds all this and more

Nice app!. Really fun music toy but needs a midi export feature.

Best tenori app. Update is out and I'm very happy with the improvements. Well worth .99! Skip your daily java for this and get some real value out of that dollar! Buy before the developer finds out it's worth $4.99!

Yes, it's great. So hurry up and buy it, cuz yeah, the price is gonna go up. Please, add more instruments!!! 

It's ok.... Overall ok when u get used to controlling the notes but I can't figure out how to delete unwanted recordings and unwanted grids :/ so this app will probably end up taking more and more space...

Good App. I like it! Would be nice if you could zoom in; the squares are so tiny. Lots of potential and worth the price.

It's a keeper.... ...so long as updates keep coming out! Nice app guys!

simple, easy, fun. i'm no professional but love music. i've been planning to buy Yamaha's Tenori-on for a while now but am settling down with this one for now. Can't wait till iPad comes out and play this on a bigger screen!

Awesome!. Needs to allow zooming. Otherwise it's good :-) - Please allow better touch/selecting - longer than 8 patterns is required. 16 or 24 would be best. This way full feature songs are made - more banks - banks be labled by genre. - more banks - more banks - more banks :-) Thanks guys. I love this app

Not happy at all. App doesn't work on iPhone 6 plus. Constantly crashes and freezes. Fix it or refund my money!

Best grid sequencer out there. Very intuative, feel needs a litlle work but worth every penny

It's pretty cool. I originally gave it one star as it's tricky too figure out at first but now I'm giving it three as I understand it a bit more it's pretty cool but it took me a while to figure out

Best of the genre IMHO. I have tried lots of the apps of this type and this one comes closest to the Tenori-on. (I have played with a Tenori-on hands-on). in fact, having the visual "live play" is somewhat easier to perform on than the Tenori-on where you have to remember what's in each block. The Tenori-on has a bunch of features and playing modes you won't find here, but this does cost hundreds less! It really shines on the iPad where you have room to see your grid and layers clearly. Functionality wise, I would like to see more robust grid management so you could email a grid in progress rather than sharing it publicly, and a clear way to delete old "noodling around" grids you no longer want. Im sure they take up a minimal amount of space, but it's clutter you don't need, especially on the iPhone/pod. A couple crazy enhancement ideas... It would be wicked awesome if it output some kind of blended grid visual when connected to an external display. Also, another music app (the lovely but more difficult Pattern Music) lets you play over the top of a song in your music library. It would be amazing if this could work here. You'd have to do bpm detection, but it would rock so hard. Bottom line, I love this app and if you like bipping and beeping music, you should give it a try.

Slowly Improving. I found the 'ABCDEFG' marker on the left - this is useful, however I find it nearly impossible for it to actually appear. The app is full of inexplicible crashes <== THIS MAKES USING THE APP EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING. There isn't any indication of what line is what for the drums, making using this nearly impossible. There's only six instruments available. Even worse, only two of them are possible to use (That is, only two of them have notes in the order ABCDEFG, like a piano, while others seem to be random notes like ABDCGFE). <== THIS IS VERY LIMITING. The help section is very short. The patterns can only be very short, meaning that this is not ideal for songs. I saved a song that went for 6 seconds, and it took 1.1mb space. This is not at all efficient, when you consider that MIDI files (which are more advanced than this) can go for 5 minutes and be just as big. I do understand that this is because you save to AAC or ringtone but more file type options could still be added. This app has been improved, but it's still not worth $2. As a positive point, this app has been improved since it was last updated. If this app is fixed, that's all good and well. Until then, save your money...

Fun yet productive. An interesting sound machine with a fair bit of functionality compared to similar apps. While the extra functionality is nice I prefer the ease and quickness of Melodica. Soundgrid however can be used to create something much more in depth it's just too bad the interface isn't quite as nice. Judging from video reviews it seems the interface was changed at some point and I think I prefer the look of the older version though imagine the change was needed for the extra options.

I like it but.... I wish you could set an instrument to play in a chromatic scale... this default penatonic crap is irritatingly limiting (and it's also why randomizing notes sounds decent - you can basically make a melody out of any random notes in a penatonic scale). Developers, please add a chromatic option to the scale list, or direct me to if I've missed it. When you do, I'll change my review.

It's just ok. If you want something to fiddle with out on the road then this program can be entertaining. If you are a seasoned synth player or musician I don't recommend it. You will tire easily with the very limited sound palette and the quirky interface. As well, when plugged into a sound board of even modest quality you will agree the sounds are quite thin. This is essentially a beginners toy. Fun for just a short time.

Great. I like this app. It's easy and very intuitive to use. It's also very powerful with eight voices. One nice feature is that you can shake and then have soundgrid randomly distribute notes. What I found surprising is how musical these random sounds were. Some suggestions for improvements. 1. More instruments 2. Organize user content. It is great you can load other grids but we should bd able to rate other creations.

DAMN. GREAT APP! I can make much cool music with it. ONLY FLAW IS THE CRASHING ON IPOD 4g

Average sound quality. Fix this issue first!!!!!

Only true tenori-on emulator. This app has layers, a crucial part of the tenori-on experience, as well as pretty animations that most closely emulate the device. Not all the sounds included were amazing, but I'm definitely looking forward to additional ones!
