Fromage App Reviews
Fromage App Description & Overview
What is fromage app? Use Fromage as your guide to worldwide cheeses, the #1 app preferred by cheese lovers. Fromage provides a convenient pocket resource of fantastic cheeses made throughout the world for your culinary exploration. The cheese library contains well beyond 1,600 world cheeses from over 35 countries and is continuously expanded thanks to suggestions from our established base of Fromage users worldwide.
Each cheese entry features artistically presented cheese photos, historically narrated flavor descriptions, website links to the producer’s dairy or fromager, and suggested best choices for complementary wines. You can add your own favorite cheeses to the standard library and include personal notes about any of the cheeses.
Searching within the library for that special cheese can be by name, country, milk-type, texture, or by your own custom tags (such as #atmystore).
So, if you’re a classically trained chef, professional party planner, cheese buyer, or just plain cheese lover, grab Fromage, your favorite wine, and experience the wonderful and historic flavors of cheese.

Fromage comes with the ability to create personal cheese notes, rate cheeses from 1 to 5 stars (included an “Avoid” rating), add cheeses to your favorite lists (Try, Buy, or Favorites categories), record tasting impressions with up to 70 tasting keywords, and search the cheese library.
You can also enter your own cheeses (including photos captured from your device camera) and list those cheeses automatically in the “My Additions” category. There is also a “Share” feature so cheese information can be sent (via e-mail) to friends or to the developer for inclusion in future versions of Fromage.

From the Developer –
Hello my name is Steve Welch and I want to thank you for your interest in Fromage. I have enjoyed developing Fromage and bringing great cheeses into your kitchen.
It is hard to believe this app began nearly 15 years ago with only a handful of French cheeses a short time after the “new” iPhone was introduced to the world. Fromage quickly became a favorite and best seller in the “Food and Drink” category and the first “Cheese” app available in the app store.
I also wanted to share that I was once a cheese maker myself, although it was some time ago. During the late ‘70’s, I worked summers at being a cheese maker at Rogue Valley Creamery in Oregon USA. Tom Vella was the owner and I made all sorts of cheeses including their vintage artisan Cheddar and Blue cheese’s. It was through this experience and the iPhone platform opportunities that led me to developing Fromage.

Fromage Comments & Reviews 2026
Doorstop. Haven’t used it in a while, but now found that it locks up immediately. Disappointed since I need to log a particularly bad cheese. :-). (Installed on 6s.).
Love it. I would like to change or add a photo. User can include photo of a new cheese but cannot change the photo of an app provided cheese. I would also like a section for recipes e.g. Cheese plate combos.
Overall, this a very well conceived and executed app.. My reasons for giving this app only 3 stars are these. After a user has tasted a cheese and taken the time to enter their notes about the cheese the developers should display an icon in the left pane in the menu item of the cheese indicating that the user has rated and created a note about the cheese. You might consider displaying the number of stars the user assigned and display an e-Mail icon if the user sent an e-Mail about this cheese from Fromage. I do not know if every cheese in the world is listed but it's likely that every cheese in the world is listed. The developers should allow users to add cheeses, entering the same parameters as the developers; Region, Milk, etc. An additional option would be to create an e-Mail Developers button enabling the user to send information on user discovered cheeses to the developers. Like many users I have this app on both my iPad and iPhone 4; therefore, I believe that most users would appreciate the developers adding an option to sync the user rating and notes on all devices. The developers have designed and delivered a very well organized and user friendly app that I like very much but I think a 5 Star app has to be very special. The features/options I have suggested would make this a really special app.
Not yet ready. There are still way too many cheeses missing for it to be worth $2.99, or worthwhile at all. Plus you can't even mark cheeses as thumbs up/down or some other indication of which you know you like or don't.
Lacks one important descriptive. When selecting cheeses a very important characteristic is how STRONG the cheese tastes. I love stinky strong cheeses but there is no way you can discover that Pont l'Eveque, for instance, is strong while a Montrachet is mild. Hope this type of tasting characteristic gets added to the Region, Texture and Milk on the front page for each cheese.
Cheese app. I love that this exists. Could it be better? Probably. Is it still awesome? Yes. If I were to nitpick, I'd ask for more ways to sort, filter, and search, but whatever. It's a fricking cheese app. Great pictures and descriptions.
Look up by pairings?. Love this app, but in the search mode there's no option for finding cheeses by what wine styles they pair with. This would be ideal for wine lovers who would like to search for the right cheese to go with their favorite glass, but know less about cheese than wine. Sort of a reverse lookup feature, like the region option?
Dodge-Powerwagon. Impressed so far, but...... Would love to see a button to notify the developer about cheeses we would like to see added. (i. e. Tillamook Swiss for one, Star Valley Wyoming for another) Thanx P.S. New Zealand, too
Great Application. The app is very userfriendly. I found most of the cheeses I was looking for. Very impressive. I can certainly recommend this app. One suggestion: I miss a category of cheeses I have tried but did not like. I still want to keep a record of them, not yo buy them again by "accident". Still 5 stars!!
Okay not great. The search feature doesn't work as well as most others do. It "misses" cheeses that are included. I paid for this app so I shouldn't have to see ads. I'll get a free app if I want to put up with ads.
A turophile must. If you love cheese, and enjoy writing about it, then this app is for you.
Execeptionally helpful. All of the tweaks mentioned should be implimented. However, overall an awesome app! I use it all the time. The updates turned a useful app into an invaluable one!
Some good but could be better. I enjoy finding new cheese on this app and saving cheeses I’m searching out in my favorite list. It would really make this app a lot better if there was a creamery name directory and it was searchable by cheese name. I just added creamery info for ten or so if my fave cheeses which was tedious.
i love cheese!. I was excited when I saw this app. I just got it and it looks great so far. I would like it if there were more Spanish cheeses included. I've heard Spain has some wonderful, little-known cheeses and I'd like to learn more about them.
Fromage 3.0. Nice overview of cheeses but it would be a Four+ star if one could add cheeses to the list or even take some out (laughing cow makes the list?). Also the built in advertising strikes me as a bit cheesy.
Great stuff. I was trying to find a way to record cheese experiences and this works fine. It has most cheese I've ever heard of and I can add those it doesn't have. Rating is cool too so I can look back to see what I liked. However it's tough to search thru "only" that which I have rated. I should be able to get a sort by number of stars and by Those I've edited. There needs to be a way to get a shopping list from the TRY category. Then, I would move that into RATED so I know I've tried that one. FAV is too broad. And what about a HATE catchier? So if I could search be number of stars in the rated list, I'd be able to use the database I am building better.
This ap needs help. The selection of cheeses is very limited, but the most frustrating thing about this ap is that THERE IS NO WAY TO ADD A CHEESE to the list. This could be a fabulous ap, but it needs two things: (1) an "add cheese" function that allows users to add selections (like Tomme de la Chataignerai) and (2) a way for the ap to report these adds so they can be considered for future, regular updates. Cheese is too complicated--you need a social network to create a valid list.
Needs better organization!. This is a beautiful looking application with lots of cheeses listed, but unless you have a specific cheese to look up, and you know the correct spelling, it isn't very useful. All the groups (Alpha, Region, Milk Type, and Texture) need to be collapsible, so you can choose one. In fact, the default should be the collapsed view. I don't have the patience to scroll through all the cheeses in the world when I want to learn what cheeses are made in Wales!
Great app a few suggestions to make it 5 stars. Being in the wine industry I really love this application. It is extremely helpful. It could be a five star app if it had two additional features: 1. a way to "check off" cheeses into a favorites category for later reference. 2: the ability to submit to Steve Welch other cheese for him to consider in future updates. GREAT JOB!!
Pretty good... missing a few things. First I’d like the saved/favorites to sync across devices. I have both iPad and iPhone, but the data is not shared between them, so I have to re-enter the data twice or limit where I manage the information. Next, I’d like to be able to create a profile with my likes/dislikes. Third, I’d like to share share my information and opinions, and collaborate and see what others think and what their opinions are.
Good but not as user friendly as I'd hoped. I'm a cheese neophyte so much of this is hard to follow. I use Steven Jennkin's Cheese Primer but the beauty of the iPhone is the portability and the quick access to info. This app is somewhat cumbersome. I thought another reviewer's idea of a "shaker" .
Good but could be great!. Love the app as you can find most items or add your own. No crashing or other problems. But could be great I you could sync your library between devices! This is a must needed addition to the app. Would rate it 5***** if it had this ability.
Good app - almost there!. Updated review - Well an add your own cheese feature has been added which is great. BUT ony first gen touch I can not save custom entries! The save button just does not function. Please fix!
Met expectations. Bought this app and certainly shows and does what's it was designed to do. Would like the ability to increase the picture size and add notes cleaner, like specific wines users have paired. All in all a must have app.
Pointless. Save your money.. A paid app that still has ads? I thought the point of a paid app was NO ads. Also, it tells you next to nothing about the cheese you're looking at. The amount of information you would have to add to this to make it worthwhile would take eons to type. Completely disappointing and a waste of money. Wish I could get my money back.
Missing Cheeses From Portugal.. As a cheese lover, I would like to have had a more comprehensive listing. I had ratted a Portugese cheese recently and wanted to look it is using this APP, only to discover that no cheeses from Portigal were listed. I had do do an Internet search in order to get the information. The APP could seriously use some updates.
Great app but bugs need to be fixed.. I can't seem to add anything in "favorites", "buy", "try" or "add my additions". The "save" button doesn't work because it is greyed out. And I can't select any of the above categories.
Sparse material, badly organized. Perhaps a one-star review will be considered harsh, but let's look at two key facts here: 1) There is very little material in the write-ups on the various cheeses (telling me that a cheese is semi-solid is something I could determine by squeezing the package, thanks!). 2) This is not a database of cheeses, it's a pack of index cards on a computer. In other words, if this appication used a database engine it could be useful even with its woefully scant descriptions. If there were a set of filters available you could, for instance, say: I want a list of all mild semi-soft cheeses from France or Italy that go well with the wine I have in my shopping cart. This app is not even remotely capable of such a thing. For what it is, I think .99 cents would be fair for this app. Three times that much is simply a ripoff.
Great app. I was really hoping to see a cheese-related app and I'm glad it's just what I was looking for. Can't wait until 2.0
Great app, but.... It would be really nice to search differant cheeses based on which type of wine you were in the mood for. For example if you wanted to drink a merlot the app could show you all cheeses that went well with that perticular wine. Great app though...
Wonderful!. Looking forward to the next version. Thanks!
Not ideal for iPad. App claims to be functional on both iPhone and iPad. Works fine on my iPhone 5S (5 Stars). Not at all on my iPad Mini. Both running iOS 7.1.2. IPad version starts then takes you to a type of cheese. No menu. No search. No ability to get off the page. Finger swipe. Tap. Pinch. Tried every known trick, even reloading, no luck. Two stars for all iPad users.
Needs to be better. For an app that I paid for, I would expect it to not erase all my entered favorite cheeses. But it just did that. I like the layout but it needs to be better than this.
Very nice. This is a good app, with a couple of small issues. The interfaces is looking a little stale, for one, but the bigger issues are duplicate entries and descriptions that often look like ad copy. I'm sure that has to do with where the entries were sourced, but after so long, couldn't they be edited? Also, like the duplicate entries, it is unhelpful to have, say, "Cheddar", "Organic Cheddar", "Goat's milk Cheddar", rather than Cheddar; Cheddar-Goat's milk; Cheddar-Organic. Same goes for branded cheeses all clumped by brand rather than type. These are longstanding issues, and it appears the developer has little interest in addressing them.
I Love Cheese. Thanks for the updates, keep up the good work! This app helped me find lots of new cheeses to hunt down and sample. Would be nice if I could check them off as I go or maybe have a favorites so I can quickly sort through as I wonder around the cheese shop looking for a new treat! Thanks.
Awesome app but.... Please add "Cambozola Black" & "Old Amsterdam" - two of my favorite cheeses or at least give me an option to create a list of cheeses that I like but you don't have on your list. Thanks & I hope to be heard.
Remove. How do you remove Cheese selections from your favorites list
A good reference but somewhat lacking in functionality. Searchability appears to be by cheese name only. So, for example, you can find "Applewood Smoked Chevre", but you can't find all cheeses that have the word "apple" in the content. It seems like the content is merely advertising verbiage copied from cheese seller websites. For example "Baked Brie is a high quality appetizer that is perfect for holiday entertaining...wrapped in a savory brioche dough and baked to perfection". Baked to perfection ? What is this, a Chili's menu ? And another thing. For "Humboldt Fog" the Region is USA. Gosh, that's kind of broad. Would a wine reference state the Region for a particular Pinot Noir as "USA" ? Speaking of Chevre...I would like to see a dictionary. What exactly IS chevre ? Brie ? Gouda ? There are categorization icons on the bottom (Search, Region, Milk Type, Texture) but only in the Search is there a vertical letter index to speed finding what you are looking for. Be prepared to do some finger scrolling on the others. For example, imagine how many "France" cheeses you have to scroll through before you get to "USA" cheeses. The favories/Notes feature seems to be well done, with a 5star scale, Try/Buy/Favorite taggability and space for tasting notes, location and date, and price. Some weaknesses but gosh, isn't it great there's a cheese app for the ipod ? All in all, a good start. Needs better searchability, and more reference content.
just one thing for quick reference.... Would like to see them add "raw" or "pasteurized" after the type of milk description. Plus, there is only one listing for Canadian cheese (Black Diamond Cheddar), but Quebec has a large selection of great cheeses that really should not be ignored.
Great app but..... Please add the abillity to bookmark cheeses that you would like to try. Have seen so many I would like to try and would love to be able to review my selection while shopping at the grocery store. This feature in my opinion would make this a 5* app.
good idea; great start. Great concept and organization; idea is overdue, given the number of similar apps for wine (very mixed result); developer should check content and allow feedback mechanism for suggested additions (esp. from outside France) and corrections (some errors of origin; also, some users may want to suggest additional wine pairings). 2.0 sounds super if additional content as promised, and if english-french.
Great way to keep track of favorite cheeses. I just needed something simple to keep track of all the delicious cheeses I come across. Would love to see a feature added that lists local cheese shops
Best of the bunch!. There are many cheese apps available, but this one, IMHO is the best by far. Not only does it provide basic info and color photos within its own cheese-cyclopedia, it allows you to add YOUR OWN cheeses and comments, and that is what it comes down to: do YOU like the cheese or not, and how would YOU describe it.
Needs a lot more work. Listing over 225 cheeses from France with every region and listing less than 50 for the entire U.S. is a joke. Being from Wisconsin I can tell you that there are world class medal winning cheeses not mentioned and yet cheese products like Laughing Cow or baked brie are listed. Do some homework. Until more U.S. cheeses are included by region, this application simply is not worth the money. Great idea, but poor execution.
Strong potential but not there - yet. What's there is not bad. What's missing mostly is functionality. Needs search capability. Listing are strange. For example, Emmenthaler is listed under Swiss. Stilton is listed under England (or English, I can't remember). Others have wished for bookmarks, user entry, wine pairings searches, etc. I concur. I also am optimistic - the developer has done a marvelous job so far - what I would call a 60% effort. I predict it won't be long before we see 80% and then that elusive near perfect. Glad I bought it. Now we just need to be patient. I prescribe a glass of wine with ... some cheese.
Woefully incomplete. None of the cheeses I have in my notes were in this app’s data. Hard to navigate.
Classically trained chef loves Fromage but,. I'm stoked to be able to have a quick go to reference for the wonder world of cheese. I'd like to see a fav's tab. big time .(keepiing your finger pressed on a selection throws it in your fav folder etc.)
Wonderful cheese encyclopedia. I’ve used this application for many years now and I am still surprised about the amount of work the author put in. Congrats! I buy lots of different cheeses and have used this guide to search for new ones. Often I have to bring them in from the country of origin. I’ve shown this app too many cheesemongers I meet and all of them said they wanted this app. Hopefully they also bought it. Thank you Mr. Welch!
Great app, keep it up !. This is a nicely written app with great descriptions, perfect for selecting then tracking my favorite cheeses. Search works great and I can find just about any cheese I look for. I can add my own cheese if one is missing from my area. The cheese ads are helpful when I'm interested in buying on-line, but I usually turn it off by setting the preferences for the app using Apple's "Settings". Overall, great job, I give it 5 stars!!
Awful for taking personal notes. Apparently you can see your notes Only under favorites. But it is totally nonsensical. When you look at your favorites you have have No idea how you rated a cheese

Very good (not insanely great) selection of cheeses. Clunky searching and data entry. Overall I find this app very useful. It has an extensive selection of cheeses and has assembled a lot of useful information about each cheese. However, there are many widely available French cheeses (my main reference - I can't speak about other regions' cheeses) that are curiously absent. Even in Australia, there are many French cheeses which are available, so I wonder why they are absent from the app (eg Roy de Valles / Itche Bai, Chaubier, Petit Sapin, Brie de Meaux to name just a few). I noticed in the description of Beaufort that it did not mention one of the cheese's most distinctive assets: its concave (indented) rind. I wonder what other potentially very useful information is omitted elsewhere. The searching is rather clunky, as you have to scroll through other categories rather than being able to quickly jump to lower (alphabetically grouped) categories. Therefore, you have to scroll through all the cow milk cheeses to get to the ewe or goat milk cheeses. When adding a new cheese, the app forces you to refer to a milk as "Goat Ewe" despite the composition. eg Roy de Valles is 80-90% Ewe and only 10-20% Goat, yet the app does not allow you to refer to it as "Ewe Goat" and nor does it let you specify % compositions of each milk type, which would be even better. There's also no way to quickly assign favourite status or star ratings. In short, I think that the interface design could also do with some sprucing up from some design guru. It has a look (a little) of being like an app built by a database programmer, but with less consideration of design / style and interface usability. So, overall, it is good and I can see myself using it a lot as a ready reckoner. However, it's not great.
Worth your time and $. Great App, although just a little heavy on U.S. products (for which most serious gourmets outside of the USA have little interest). Excellent French and Italian references. Overall well worth your time.

. Like Canada has 1 cheese to offer. Where's Oka, for starters?
Missing feature. Missing one key feature - your favourites list should show the number of stars you gave each cheese so you don't have to click on each cheese to se your rating. It would be nice if you could have the cheeses in your favourites listed by the score you gave them.
It's OK. Ontario and Quebec both produce superior cheeses. It would be great to see more listings from this region!
Waste of time. Save your dough, skip this cheese app. Data base is very limited plus it doesn't sync between devices when you add your own info. I should have been more cautious before hitting the buy button, don't make the same mistake.
Add french canadian cheese. Please add canadian cheese, specialy french canadian, like those from "La fromagerie Alexis de Portneuf. Or add the possibility to add information on personal cheeses not include in your list. Thanks
Great program. This program is awesome but can you guys add a search ability to it?
Nice app, shame about the icon. My wife likes this app. It only gets four stars because she has had to add several popular cheeses that should be in there (and at the same time she can't believe that Black Diamond cheddar is included), and because of that icon.
Good - but need a way to enter your own. It has a nice database of cheeses, but I bought 3 today and none are in there..must have a way to enter your own to be useful

Completely Unusable. Horrible app. The links in the favorite tab don't work, rendering the entire section useless. The icons in the menu are pixelated and the overall design and workflow do not follow conventions and/or basic principles of mobile UX.
Great App. Thoughtfully put together and a great range of cheese entries. I think it's the best cheese reference app out there.
Needs updating. Does not make regular updates to the app; does not have a good selection or information about the cheeses.
Wrong data. Good idea, horrendous mistakes. How could "Queso Oaxaca" possible be from the US? This cheese was first made in Mexico. You can't associate a cheese to the US just because an American company makes it too. It is like saying that pizza is an American dish because Dominoes and Pizza Hut are big pizza companies. Completely disappointing!
Owner. A good start, but the American section is missing most of the fine artisan producers that are so exciting to watch. And Baked Brie?? Come on folks, that isn't a cheese, it is a preparation, and does not merit a listing here.
Great, but a few questions.... I love the variety and info, but agree with an earlier reviewer, how do I find the ones I have rated, with stars? Also not clear how to put them in favorite. Am sure I will use it anyway, as a resource.
Needs better navigation. Positives Extensive cheese list Note taking Search function works well Negative Navigating by types is very difficult The little selection dots on the right are not labeled There's no way to expand or collapse lists Although you can toggle favorites on and off there is no way to remove the cheese from your favorites list
Needs more cheese!. Could use a cheese shaker for random cheeses. Also needs more cheese updates as some are missing, would like to see all cheese types at some point Similar types and updates would be nice.
Useless! Disapointening!. No Gruyere or Emmentaler from Switzerland. Those are basics. I can't recommend it.
Needs More Italian Cheeses!. This is a great application if you're into French cheese. Personally, I prefer Italian cheeses--only 14 are featured. How about the Italian update.
Good. ...but no syncing across devices?
Not Anywhere Near Complete. This app is only mildly useful as it not anywhere near complete. Not worth the money!
"Send" feature doesn't work. When you click "send" the email disappears quickly into the top left corner. Please fix.
It's OK but has room to improve. Would be much better if you could also search by type of wine/beer with suggested cheese pairings
Not great. It's sort of unbelievable that there's no way to add a cheese. Especially since the provided selections are somewhat limited.
Good app… but. it would be nice if you could sync the cheeses that you add and ratings of cheeses between an iPhone and an iPad
Search. The program is very nice and useful, but no way to search hopefully there will be search capability with Iphone 3.0 fireware,
Amazing app. I am a Cheesemonger by trade. This app is amazing I tell costumers to get this app. If you are a cheese lover this is for you
Needs work. Expensive for what it is. Needs a suggest function and a way to request that cheeses be added to the database. The US section is really weak.
Good start. App is decent but you need the ability to add cheeses and brands/ producers of cheese types already in the app. For example, there are lots of English cheddars, but I might want to remember I like Keen's.
A kick butt app!. A great almanac to start from and ability to add own cheeses. Would love it if I could compare notes with the general public and see what hey had to say. I also would like a "never again" button, like the "try/buy" so I will know never to get it agian and take it out of my search function forever! Love the app. Well done. Christmas was fun this year.
Won't open. I paid for the app but it won't open. I have an iPhone 6s and have updated all my software to 9.3. Does anyone know what the problem is?
Phenomenal. Very nice application, impressed by the progress over the years, very good implementation for the iPad. Thank you, keep up the good work. I like the email feature.
Excellent reference. Not perfect though; la vache qui rit is inexplicably classified as American (under laughing cow label) & other generic american versions of traditional cheeses are needlessly included as well (Parmesan, really?)
