Skylight Forecast App Description & Overview

What is skylight forecast app? *Skylight is a service that requires a paid subscription to show you forecasts*

Do you ever wish you could know when those magical, gorgeous sunsets happen?

Skylight is the new app from the Apple Design Award winning team of friends behind Halide Camera and Spectre that magically predicts what the quality of light in your evening will be.

Skylight not only tells you when important events like golden hour and sunset happen, but does something magical: with the help of lots of weather and environmental data, machine learning and a pinch of magic, the app gives you a brief forecast. Is it going to be a clear, great golden hour and spectacular sunset, with a scarlet lingering afterglow, or a dim and cloudy glow on the horizon? Checking the app or widget will help you get out the door when you are chasing the light.

POWERFUL PREDICTIONS

The Skylight prediction model uses many atmospheric factors near your location to make a prediction about golden hour, sunset and afterglow. Golden hour is the period of time directly before sunset, when the light is at its most beautiful. The sunset period, when the sun starts touching the horizon, is a stunning daily moment when colors can be at their most dramatic. Finally, the afterglow of a sunset is the period of time when the sun’s light can still color the sky and clouds in beautiful, vibrant colors.

Weather forecasts only tell you if you are likely to see clouds, or low visibility. With a quick, scannable forecast and extra information about conditions, Skylight takes out the guesswork when it comes to the most beautiful light of the day. Whether you are trying to plan a photoshoot or simply love beautiful sunsets, Skylight can be a fantastic utility to check every afternoon.

GORGEOUS DESIGN

Skylight is made by Lux, a group of three friends with a passion for making gorgeous, innovative apps. We previously brought you Halide Camera, the Apple Design Award winning camera app for iPhone and iPad, and Spectre, the iPhone App of the Year of 2019.

Skylight builds on our tradition of making thoughtfully crafted, beautiful products. The app’s colors and iconography changes with the quality of light, and every feature and screen was designed with care.

HANDY TOOLS

Use the beauitful, quick app as it is or place one of Skylight’s widgets on your home screen to stay informed about the light near you.

FROM YOUR TINY TEAM

We truly love making apps — it’s truly our dream to create something like Skylight, and we hope you love it. If you like the app and the work we put into it, we’d love to hear from you with a review or rating, or a message! Thanks for your support — we couldn’t do this without you.

COMPATIBILITY

Skylight is available on iOS 15 and above, for iPhone 6S and 6S Plus and newer devices.

PRIVACY AND LOCATION

Skylight needs Location Services to create forecasts for your local light. Skylight uses background location services by default for constantly updating forecasts and to update your local forecast requiring you to repeatedly open the app. Just a note: Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

Nope. Very limited ability to do anything particularly useful.

Needs option for Sunrise. Great app but it needs an option for sunrise. I’m on the east coast.

I am 92.37% sure this is a shell company for Apple please prove me wrong @ “lux optics”. I am 92.37% sure this is a shell company for Apple please prove me wrong @ “lux optics” No, you guys can not have my precise location data 24/7 yes there is an option for an address or even general location but big no-no What this app offers on paper sounds amazing tho Ok my original hyper focus was on halide when I started this review privacy policy for halide honestly kudos for the entire thing fitting on two pages of A4 copy paper on default setting I absolutely loved the ten-day photography course and my little certificate at the end was a nice touch -(actually I really love looking at it after my 10 day reminder to look at it went off) The hide all data from Facebook data thing, kinda cute tho You’re taking an absolutely massive photo with absolutely massive amounts of data if I post something to Facebook the company that can use the micro abrasions on your camera lens to track you [Yes seriously look it up]… that’s not even funny it’s hysterical Oof what a mess this review is big apologies too the the 4 friends who read this ;)

Nice App. At first I was not sure if I wanted this app but I now use it along with my favorite weather app. Knowing what to expect around sunset helps me to determine what type of location I want to visit in the afternoon/evenings.

Trial without signing up?. Make the trial period available without signing up for a subscription first. I know I could sign up then immediately go to my settings and cancel, but I shouldn’t have to. I’ll keep using the SunsetWx website.

Very nice design. Go get Lumy instead.. It’s pretty but Lumy is ions better in terms of functionality.

So handy. Just recently moved a coastal California and this is great way to know if the sunset is going to be beautiful before we start our walk to the beach. Can't wait for the Watch app! 😉

Well-crafted, simple and useful. Skylight is a simple, well-crafted app that has been correct much more than it has been incorrect in predicting the chance of great evening light. I personally think the widget for home and lock screens provide more value for the day-to-day. It’s helps me to decide when to pick the camera up from the shelf to capture the view.

Beautiful. Such a pleasant UI/UX and minimalistic aesthetic

Another shameless cash grab. As title states; this is another shameless cash grab by the same team that bait & switched people into paying for a "pro" camera app with rudimentary features that can't compare with the existing iOS Pro camera apps into paying a extortionate pricing substitution. ‍ Same thing with this app, there are hundreds of existing apps doing the same thing but they'll trick you into paying another extortionately priced subscription for a mediocre copycat app. Really sad

Awesome App. I really love this app. I like that this app not only tells you the forecast of the sunset, but also how good the vibrancy will be and what kind of colors you can expect. I feel like most sunset prediction apps in the App Store do not tell you this much information as Skylight does. I would like for you to add sunrise forecasts, because I get curious if it will be a good sunrise as well.

Romantic. What a clever concept and so well designed for easy interpretation. Has been right 6/7 days this week which is very impressive given volatility of Mother Nature. Able to plan a nice outdoor dinner with my wife thanks to the app which ended quite well. Thanks guys

Best Sunsets Ever!!!. I love this app! As an amateur photographer and outdoor enthusiast this app helps me take better photos and motivates me to take more scenic walks. No more guessing when golden hour will be, or missing amazing sunsets. With widgets and notifications on my lock and home screens I can plan my evening dog walks around golden hour, sunset, and afterglow. Knowing there will be a great sunset after a long day motivates me to plan more scenic walks when Skylight forecasts a great (or better) sunset. I can’t believe how accurate the sunset and afterglow forecasting are! I used the Beta of this app for a few months, and caught dozens of beautiful sunsets I otherwise would have missed. Thanks Lux for creating an elegant and intuitive app that enhances my photos, motivates me to get outside, and provides me with more mindful moments to enjoy on my own or with loved ones!

Doesn’t this violate App Store policies?. Cannot do anything functional without doing an in-app purchase.

What a delight. Stoked to see the Lux team come out with a new app - and what do you know, it’s phenomenal & elegant and just a joy to use! So nice to have a heads up as to if I should take my camera out on my evening walks!

Beautiful sun tracker. Really enjoying this app, it’s got a beautiful thoughtful design. I want to justify keeping it, but as others have mentioned, it does feel a bit pricey for this type of app. Wish this was the same $11.99 per year as Halide. Great work though for sure!

A simple, focused app that’s super useful. More weather apps should be like Skylight.

Needs more. I beta tested this and found that this app doesn’t provide nearly enough functionality to justify paying for a subscription. The “predictions” regarding the golden hour quality are laughable at best. Pro tip: your weather app mostly like will tell you when sunrise/sunset is. Some weather apps even tell you when Golden Hour is, that’s really all you need.

Almost Perfect. This is a few updates away from being perfect and knowing the team behind it. It will get there. This is exactly what I need as a photographer to identify the conditions coming up in the day. It’s been more and more accurate now that it’s left beta. Would add a few features such as, a look at the projected conditions for the next day or even the week if possible. Widget sometimes acts up on me but I’ll give that some time this app is fresh out the box! And some custom features like the app icon, and customizable widgets/notifications.

Great and accurate sunset tracker. I really enjoyed beta-testing this app and it worked great for me; I got some beautiful sunset photos, and I liked knowing what the sunset would be like.

Lacking Features. Biggest disappointment is that its only sunsets and not sunrises. So if you’re serious about catching good light (aka someone who is paying for an app…) then this app just gets you half of what you are looking for. You’re paying for the “forecast”, but it doesn’t forecast more than a few hours out. Doesn’t seem to support notifications which seems like a basic feature for a paid app. If conditions are gonna be good I should be able to have it send a notification. A more important feature than widget support. I like the wording and descriptions it has, but overall it’s simplistic to a fault. Hopefully they add some more features, but at this stage it should be free.

Love!. Love it!

Pretty simple. On first cut this app looks pretty simple and probably not worth the 2.7 cents per day. We’ll see.

Handy utility.... handy for photographers, but also for anyone who likes to get outside and enjoy beautiful places. It's motivating to know that the light this morning is especially beautiful or or the sunset tonight will be a colorful one. Get out there and Enjoy!

Overpriced for functionality. $2 dollars per month for annual, 4 dollars if billed monthly? I’d rather pay 4 dollars a year for each iOS update, just doesn’t make sense. App worked okay in NYC, gave only semi accurate results. Halide was fine because I could buy a real license and had tons of functionality. This can be replaced by opening your window and checking outside at this point. Devs are cool and make cool stuff, but in this economy I can’t be throwing away money at little gadgets like this.

Subscription model.. I’d rather pay a fixed price than an ongoing fee.

Really Good. Although I hate the subscription, the 10 dollars a year is reasonable and I signed up. This app is the best sunset tracker out there right now, and surely has the best visual design. It’s always great when the devs are responsive to feedback. Only thing I don’t like is the app icon, but surely another hit from the Lux team.

Subscription model for a sunset app? Really?. It’s wild what people will charge subscriptions for these days. For that cost, I’d rather just go look outside. Better yet, download the SolarWatch app. Does a lot of the same things for free.

Wonderfully simple. This app does one thing really well, and looks good while doing it. Lovely experience.

Fine but wishing for a lifetime license. Honestly it’s a good app with a great UI. Well considered. I’m disappointed that there are only subscription pricing options though. I assume this is due to the weather data pricing (are you hitting Apple weather’s API cap?) but it would be more user friendly to explain why the price is what it is so it feels more reasonable even if everything makes sense to charge for. Great app though, just pricing feels off for me.

Worst paid app. Paid the money, thinking I’d get more than just sunsets. Nope. That’s literally all you get. Day of sunsets. No forecasting, no sunrise, no nothing. Wasted $10. I give zero starts.

Tap and Hold!. The tap-and-hold interaction is so lovely. Wish there were a system-wide implementation of it.

Pretty great and a fantastic UI. It’s been accurate for my location, which is not an easy place to predict weather. My only request is that you include sunrise as well. Then I can know if I need to get up early if the sunset is looking mediocre.

Neat, but I wish it’d do mornings. That’s it, that’s the review

Overpriced. It’s a neat concept and it looks very nice, but $4/month is much too expensive for such a limited utility. I get that it’s doing different things than Lumy, but the data is obfuscated in such a way that it feels less useful to me than just knowing the times and weather conditions. I’m sure there are weather APIs to pay for and similar things, but at $4/mo or $24/yr, I don’t think it does enough.

Not bad but not great.. I participated in the beta and it was ok. Wasn’t great but wasn’t bad either. I did discover that on the days the app said the sunset wasn’t going to be great because of the weather, I saw the sunset was great because of the weather. While this might be a good app for beginner photographers, it’s experience that tells you when a time is going to be good. While the $10/year isn’t unreasonable, it’s just not something I’m going to pay for having been in the beta.

Don’t waste your money. Figured I would try this out with the one week trial to see if it was any good. After the first few nights I could see that it was useless. One night it said there would be a “spectacular” sunset. I went outside to check and it was nothing but gray haze. The other days it said sunset would be “good” and it was similarly underwhelming. But of course, I forgot to cancel the subscription until after I had already been charged $10 for a year… 🙄

Excellent app. I’ve been using this since the first beta and it’s an excellent app with a very nice/clean UI.

Beautiful and useful app. Totally worth the reasonable $10/year price. This what excellent design and information looks like, no need to pile the UI with lots and lots. Stunning.

No Live Activities. Why is there no Live activities to monitor approaching sunset times? Would be a higher rating if you added this.

Skylight is a diamond in a sea of glass. I was lucky enough to get to beta test this app in development and wow, it's absolutely beautifully designed! It does its job well and is a joy to use in the process. I’ve tried similar apps and always felt like user experience was an afterthought - I might as well have been opening a spreadsheet of precalculated sunset times. With Skylight though, it's clear that team at Lux put care and consideration into creating something that not only works well, but that people want to use! 5 stars all around, what a great experience!

UI is absolute eye candy! 🍬. Love the concept and the execution. Intuitive interactions almost feel expected from this studio, and I couldn’t be happier. The only 2 things I have a “problem” with so far are the fact that no matter how long I keep the app open for, or restart my device, it continuously tells me it’s ‘STARTING UP’. Which… is a little odd. Also, today hasn’t finished yet, and it’s only giving me tomorrows’s forecast, and not the current. Also, the app icon isn’t the best. I mean, I wish it just matched that of the UI a little more. Like Halide’s. I know it’s early access, but I heard you guys like feedback, so that’s mine. I’m sure when it’s all polished up, it’ll be great. Happy Golden Hour! 🌅

Good app, shouldn’t be subscription. I am a big fan of all Lux apps, and skylight is the best light forecast app I’ve used, however I think it would be better if the app was available to buy outright like Spectre and not a subscription. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this app.

5 stars IS NOT ENOUGH!!!! =). wow you guys are really doing something(s) i’ve always dreamed about as an amateur photographer but these daze on my iphone ios :) thanks for everything and sharing this with us all! truly. cheers!! later on. 🌙✌🏼🇭🇺😊🖥️👍🏼

Gorgeous. Beautifully simple ❤️

Inaccurate. I would love to endorse this app and share it around but right now for my region this app is way too inaccurate, it tells me times way beyond the time of sunset here in Sydney, Australia. Beautiful and easy to use UI design though.

Flashy but not too useful. I don’t dislike the app in any way but it really needs to provide more detail, the factors it uses to decide how good the conditions to be and forecasts for multiple days. Not getting very much for the price the moment.

Great looking app, totally inaccurate in Aus. I open the app when it’s pouring rain for a laugh to see what this app says. It always says great or good. It’s an excellent idea for an app, but where I am in Australia it just doesn’t provide the data for it to work properly. Hopefully it can have more accurate data in the future

Purchased the app and now I can’t access it. App isn’t allowing me access even after I have already payed for it - No button to “restore” purchase and no way to get in touch with the developer. Seems like a total scam.

Sometimes thinks things will be awesome but they aren’t.. Nice and simple app but seems to always say that sunset and golden hour are going to be great or spectacular but they are generally “ok”. Not sure if the algorithm is off my my location or types of clouds or it just is way more enthusiastic and wants everything to be awesome even if it isn’t.

Not working. Won’t detect my location 🤷🏻‍♂️ app keeps crashing.

Great app BUT missing out on one big thing. Love how the app look, UI is great but not having the app on the watch and having complications there is huge missed opportunity and one thing that will keep me away from subscription.
