Carnets - Jupyter App Description & Overview

What is carnets - jupyter app? Jupyter notebooks are a powerful tool used in education and research. You can write small snippets of Python code and observe the result on screen, combine with paragraphs of text, using Markdown.

Carnets provides a complete, stand-alone, implementation of Jupyter notebooks. Everything runs on your device, using the embedded Python interpreter; you do not need an internet connection. You can chose between Jupyter notebooks and the more advance Jupyterlab using Settings.

Numpy, Sympy, Matplotlib, Pandas, lxml, bokeh, nbextensions (including ipywidgets) and many other packages are pre-installed. To see the full list of installed packages, type "%pip list" in a code window. You can add more packages using "%pip install packageName", but only if they are pure Python.

If you need scipy, seaborn or scikit-learn, please use our other App, "Carnets - Jupyter (with scipy)".

You can share your notebooks with other apps and also open notebooks or directories managed by other apps.

Partial list of installed packages: astropy, babel, bokeh, cryptography, cvxopt, Fiona, geopandas, geopy, lxml, matplotlib, numpy, openCV, pandas, pillow, pyFFTW, pyproj, rasterio, regex, shapely, sympy, wordcloud.

Great functionality, but processor intensive.. This app causes my phone to be noticeable hot in a very short amount of time. It seems to be doing something cpu intensive in the background even when idle.

Great App. Finally figured out how to use it and the app is great.

Great Freaking App.... Please charge for it, and keep the improvements coming. First order of business: no more restart kernel after switching task :)

Great App, could use split view. The experience with this app has been great. Would love to see a split screen option to have 2 Carnets windows open. Thank you for creating this, it allows me to do bioinformatics on the go!

How to install ‘glpk’ solver. I am trying to solve a Pyomo model. I was able to install and run Pyomo successfully. However, when I go to solve my model I cannot install the glpk solver. Any recommendations on how to do this?

Great app. Thanks for developing this and releasing it for free. Look forward to things like seaborn and scitkit-learn in future updates.

Crashes. Freezes up all the time

Instantly heats up an iPhone. Cool idea and it does work. The heat output from the processor is humongous.

Fantastic. This is a great way to use Jupyter notebooks on an iPad.

Should Be More Flexible. It would be better to provide a way to install .whl files by pip or conda. Otherwise, it’s really brilliant. Hope for better!

Great functionality - could use ipados mouse support. Right now it is hit or miss if the trackpad will successfully scroll. Not a huge issue as I’m used to keyboard shortcuts in notebooks and using the screen works just fine.

Great app for Data Science/Machine Learning. This is a great app for data science/machine learning However, there is no support for PyTorch and you cannot use pip to install PyTorch. It will be nice if you can add support for PyTorch.

Stopped working. I was thinking i found a good learning platform for mobile but this thing Stopped working after 10 mins of usage. Everytime i restart app it says error in yellow. Please fix this

Can’t open ipynb files. I’m having an issue where the app keeps opening any ipynb file as a txt file. Why does it keep adding the .txt extension on its own? Very frustrating and until then, unusable for me.

Jupyter Notebook Mobile. Excellent implementation for busy Data Scientists that are too busy to analyse on a computer. Love it man😍

Great so far, still learning features. Working great on my iPad Pro. Still need to work on connecting to non-local sources apart from file shares like Google Drive. But the notebooks work great for casual investigations while cooking in the kitchen, away from my desktop. Also works well splitting screen with safari.

Can’t Download Spicy or Statsmodels. I cannot seem to download spicy or statsmodels. I have researched and tried everything. I suspect some of it is written in C. Any way you can add these packages? - Kevin

Thank you, thank you. I’ve been waiting for this for a long time!

Torn.... I'm torn because this is a great app, but it is useless for me without support for libraries with C dependencies (yes, scipy). It's not at all the dev's fault, but having to manually package dependencies like scipy with the app (which seems to take like a year or more) means I will never be able to just run my notebooks as-is on an iPad. :/

EXTREMELY ANNOYING Line Duplication Bug. Almost always during a session will carnets begin to duplicate and create new lines for every character you type. Only reliable fix is to restart app or delete the new line for EVERY character you type.

Paid v Free. I own a paid Jupyter notebook interface and also this free one (Carnets). I emailed the developer of the paid version with a question and have yet to receive a response. I emailed this developer (Nicolas) a few minutes ago and already received a reply. Not only was the service amazing, but I can now do things in Carnets that I can’t do in the paid version. I believe Carnets will be my “go to” Jupyter app.

Great App, except ONE issue. I really wish there was an option to fill in the ipad screen. When using landscape mode, there is considerable space to left and right that aren't being used, this combined with text being small (without any option to resize), makes it feel cramped. Really wish there was a mode where it would be more zoomed in (so no wasted blank space on left/right side), possibly where some of the meny bar item up avove slide away, so more of the coding canvas fills the screen. Since ipads are smaller than laptops, this would make such a big difference. Also, add a donate button in the app if you can. Its free, so its great, but i would honesly donate 10 bucks if i could, many more probably would too.

Great job!!!. Thanks for this great APP, i allow me to edit, test and run Python programs.....

Love this app! You should charge good money for it!. This is a fabulous Jupiter implementation and allows me to do development on the road when not connected to the server on my corporate network. My only complaint: Full file access only appears to work from the Carnets app folder. If I go to a Working Copy folder (ideal for git access) I can only open ipynb files, and modules, data files, etc. don’t load. If I copy a Working Copy folder into the Carnets folder, everything works perfectly. Would love to see this issue fixed, then I’d give you 6 stars (if Apple would allow it).

Fascinating but somewhat deficient. This is absolutely a gorgeous app. I hope that this can run TensorFlow environment inside my iPad and this gonna be phenomenal!!!

Overheating iphone. Love this app and layout. Jupyter feels sooooooo good on a handheld device. But my iphone overheats when using. Any fixes for this?

Local Jupyter Server, which works amazing. Every single thing that Nicolas has created has been nothing short of amazing, and it includes this!!! As a FOSS lover, supporter, and developer: the tools being Open Sourced, and bridging the gap in iOS for full development are nothing short of amazing.

Awesome. Finally , we have an app which let us use Jupyter notebook on iPad and directly connect with iCloud. Now I can continue doing the undone job during traveling without bring a heavy laptop .

Enter key doesn’t start a new line?!?!?!?!. The app is flawless but When I press enter to start writing on a new line nothing happens Is this problem from my end ?

Okay but needs work. Sometimes it will not recognize imported modules. You can import ‘pandas’ but not ‘pandas’ as ‘pd’ and even then ‘pandas’ may or may not be recognized. It is a hit or miss but it is great when it works

Amzaing app. It’s such an amazing app. Never imagined I could do some python practice on ipad so easily. Now I regret much less about buying an iPad Pro. 😆Just one minor suggestion about a small problem I encountered: scipy and seaborn packages cannot be installed successfully. Would it be possible to get it fixed?

Awesome, but why not have remote host support. Maybe you could somehow collaborate with Juno and enable both local and remote execution? Built in port forwarding would be a killer feature.

Perfect!. When I first started python, c, c++, Java, rust, etc I was a noob 😶😶😶but look at me now I am a pro😎

I am thrilled. I can't believe this is a thing!!! Huge congrats to the developers. Finally, the iPad is starting to become functional for scientific calculations. I am incredibly amazed!

Awesome app! Problem with turtle package though . . .. This app is fantastic!! I definitely recommend it. It is definitely helping with learning Python. Though every time I try to draw something with turtle package, it says it couldn’t find it. It always says there’s something wrong with import turtle. Will you please look into this?

Love it! Hope there will be scipy!. I love this app. It will be much better if scipy is added in it.

the best app. this is the best coding app for ipad. It works just the same as jupyter notebook on my laptop. however, it would be the very best if it supports pytorch. is there any future plan of supporting pytorch on this app?

Absolutely awesome. I have been hoping for local Jupyter notebooks on the iPad for a long time, thank for creating this. I am going to disagree with other reviewers and say don’t worry about remote for now, Juno and Working Copy have that solved. Keep working on making offline local Notebooks better, that is the problem only you are solving. And please charge for the app, I really want you to keep making this better and will gladly pay.

Must-have learning tool.. Delightfully easy to use. Looking forward to developer adding support for C-based libraries e.g networkx, scrappy, pandas, and scikit.

Unauthorized access to photo library. They receiving unauthorized access to photo library. If you’ll check your privacy setting they are absent there. How did Apple confirm this app?

Looks great but keeps restarting the kernels whenever I cmd + tab. This is a great app especially given that its free. Only issue it seems to restart the kernel when I switch to other apps

Very nice. Please add remote hosting!. Thank you for building a real Jupyter Notebook client. Ability to upload/download from a GitHub repository would make this the definitive app of its kind.

Great app needs some work. I am not someone to write long reviews but here we are. By itself this app is great but certain data types never work and functions are considered syntax errors I checked over and over to see what I was doing wrong for an hour around but still nothing and other functions seemed to be non existent so please fix this because this a great app but needs some work also way to many adds.

Very useful. 5 Star!

Besi ide for ipad. Dont get windows laptop or macbook Get a ipad with Magic Keyboard n u r good to rock n roll

Download Now. This app is legit Jupyter Notebook on IOS. How is this app free?!? Either way I’m glad it’s free and it works beautifully. Thank you so much.

Need full keyboard. Hi, I’m not getting full keyboard support like tab button, shift, enter. How do I get this suppor??? Plz help me ASAP. Thank You.

Amazing. It’s amazing app, working like a desktop version. Thanks to the developers.

Great app thanx!. I am a student and I am using it to do my project. But I have noticed it does not have the Seaborn library for visualizing correlation.

Amazing app. This (free) app does a better job than some of the paid IDEs. Keep up the good work.

Mid UX. Really poor interface, could not work out how to do something as basic as switching between files in an open folder. The toolbar menu and icons are all inconsistent and dont do what is expected. The only plus I found was the python version was up to date

great tool for writing and testing python snippet on ipad. glad to see the Bug with IOS15 and IPad pro magic keyboard has been fixed so quickly.

Brilliant. Much more convenient than using a laptop! I love this app and it is for free unexpectedly!!!!

Such a great App! One question... This is such a great App! Finally I can use iPad to do some light coding, many thanks to the developers. I only got one issue, is it possible to install scipy and sk-learn? Thanks!

Works great. Very happy to play with python and jupyter on iphone :-)

App failure. This app fails to open on my iPad Air 2 since the last upgrade to Python 3.9. Can this be rectified as it was performing well before this upgrade?

Brilliant. NEVER pay for python. It is a free, open source language which is why this app is perfect.

The best. This app makes coding on an iPad really fun. The only problem I have with it is installing seaborn package.

Brilliant. Unbelievable this is free I’d happily pay for this. Great resource for working on code even supports iCloud Drive

No pandas library. Great ideas of not running in cloud, but I could not find the pandas library, can u help?

Great App!. I writes jupyter notebook scripts regularly for demonstration, it is really convenient to have an (FREE!) app that allows me to work on them on the metro, the train, and so on. I however would suggest the developers to include PANDAS, and BOKEH libraries.

Great app, matplotlib doesn't work as expected. It's a great app for when you are away from your pc. Google colab would probably be a better option though. In case you developers are still improving this app, matplotlib does not show the graphs when I write: plt.plot(x)

Great Product. This is great for experimenting on the go!

App shutting down. At the beginning the App worked well but after a while it shuts down after I click on the run button.

Excellent tool. I’m using Jupyter with sympy to solve relatively small physics problems. Carnets is great for doing this where I am, not at a computer. Remember to use nbimporter to access modules you’ve written in the same folder. It hasn’t crashed while in use, but it does reload when switching from other apps, probably due to memory constraints. One quirk is that when you paste into selected text, the new text stays selected, so you have to remember to put the cursor after the selection. Otherwise, I’m glad I found this.

Great app. and very useful. My feature request would be to add scipy.

Great app - but return stopped working from iPad keyboard with iOS15. I love the app, but it broke with iOS15 and the iPad keyboard. Returns no longer work for the keyboard when entering code. I can switch to the manual on-screen keyboard, but that is pretty clumsy, and that keyboard disappears whenever I type on the physical keyboard.

Very useful. 5 Star!

Amazing, awesome, best app in the store. I have been self-learning Python and Python with Excel for the past couple of months using both a windows laptop (surface) and a MacBook Air (which i love), anyway i have been watching YouTube vids and i recently purchased a Python-Excel class on Udemy. Everyone has you installing python, pandas, pip, all kinds of terminals, bash, this and that. I hate installing a lot of stuff on my Windows laptop because things just don’t behave that well. So i have been playing with Pythonista on my iPad and i was looking in the store and stumbled upon Carnets. So after reading the reviews i installed it and was blown away. I didn’t like the way VSstudio worked with Jupiter notebooks, so i tried Carnets and amazing theJupyter notebook loaded. Then i tried some simple stuff and it worked great…excellent i can use my iPad now. Anyway i purchased this Udemy python-excel course and installed all the programs….I decided to try the Carnets and it worked great for all the openpyxl library and the charting libraries.Just amazing What a great app. I can’t thank you enough …

Please add an option to Fill entire screen and Auto load Files. About 1/3 of the display isn't used because of the left and right unused columns. Please add a setting that allows you to toggle streching all the way to the right and left. Similarly, please add a toggle that allows minimum-text size. Ive figured out a way to change the size for the code itself, but the output texts for things like tables is still too small to be comfortable. Lastly, please add an option to Automatically load the files from the directory the notebook is opened from. Its super annoying to have to do it manually each time. Otherwise, this is great. Those three would really fix all the annoyance that i currently notice.

Help. Dear developer, fantastic job and sincere thank you. Quick question: for iPad is there an easy way to read (like pd.read(‘.xlsx’)) a file from the iPad? I’m uncertain how to exactly pinpoint the correct path, even when the file is located in the Carnet root folder. Thank you. Best, Ryan

Love it. This app is great.

bugs. using this on my ipad pro max, 2022. this app is absolutely free and awesome, i have to use python for my university course. but omg. so many bugs. after you make about 4 or 5 files, you have to delete the app and reinstall it to be able to make anything else!! i have storage. it isn’t a storage issue. you can’t make multiple files on this app. additionally, it doesn’t always run. i can edit a python code a handful of times, but whether or not it runs is the problem. after like 5 rerun’s, it stops. it just doesn’t work anymore. so then i copy and paste my code into a new file and it’ll work there, since my reruns are set to 0 on the new file. but then that adds to the issue of having multiple files on this thing. to use this app you’ll need to save your codes on your device or something, back them up there to be able to constantly delete and reinstall the app itself. and after a code file gets too old, carnets wont even run it. like it forgot what you wrote or something, or it is too old of a file to open. which makes 0 sense. otherwise, this is the only python app i found that works on an ipad. so i’m going to continue using it while i’m out in my classes. i have a desktop pc at home so until i get home to do hw, i can do something on my ipad. even if its buggy, i guess. but people need to know about how sucky this app is! every python app i’ve used is absolutely worse than this one though. so i guess picking the lesser of two evils, this one isn’t as bad. but please, developer, fix these issues.

A powerful code editor. Thanks Jupyter Notebook.

ios14用这个应用会闪退. 进入计算界面切换输入格式的时候闪退

Amazing. This is a fantastic app for coding.

PDF Conversion Error. I get an error every time I try to save a jupyter notebook as a pdf.

AMAZING APP. I always thought we can’t code on iPad offline until I found this amazing app!!! Definitely love it! One less reason to bring my heavy old computer everywhere! So happy!!! Thank you so much brilliant developer!!!

Problems with this version. This code revision is now crashing or sending the Carnets app to a place that I can not recover and read-in a notebook.

Wonders. Runs smoothly on iPhone 12! I just took a semester of python w/ jupyter & I can’t believe there was a phone version this whole time! This works great for writing small snippets of code!

Very useful and convenient. Im a CS student. This app is awesome! I dont have to bring my laptop to my part-time job anymore. Just put my little iPad to work and have a quick review code anytime without any issue.

Not a conda user but..... This app is amazing. I’ve been struggling to find a decent way to code from my phone and this is it. I don’t use anaconda on my normal computer but love the setup they have here!

Doesn’t handle relative directories well.. Any code that handles directories loses the relative directory on the iPad. If I open an IPYNB file from iCloud Drive, the app will generate a copy of the file in an isolated environment, which does not help if you are opening files within the same directory.

cannot install sklearn. I downloaded this app because I need to code on python in my machine learning class. However no matter how I tried I was not able to import sklearn package here, therefore it’s totally useless. Since I believe many people use python to do machine learning, i hope this can be included.
