BitCam App Description & Overview

What is bitcam app? A blast from the past!

BitCam is the digital camera you would have used on your mini pocket computer back in 1996. We made it to celebrate the Iconfactory's 20th anniversary of making cool things with pixels!

The design brief for this app was simple: “What would we design today given the constraints of the past?”

What we ended up with shows how much technology has improved since we first started writing software for Apple’s products.

We stuck to a black & white interface because color graphics support back then was hit-or-miss. Some folks had it, some didn’t. A mini pocket computer would certainly need a color graphics card upgrade, and that hardware would cost you hundreds of dollars!

There’s also none of the typical animation we see in today’s apps. Zoom rects were used for view transitions, scrolling in credits was jerky, and chunky controls were par for the course. (And boy, were they hard to implement on today’s devices that do asynchronous layout and high resolution drawing without an XOR operation!)

We did notice one thing that hasn’t changed over the years: the importance of clarity and simplicity in a user interface. BitCam’s graphics are blockier, but have many of the same traits we strive for in today’s client work. (We kinda wish buttons still had borders, too.)

Retina displays, selfies and social networks weren't around in 1996. Coming up with terminology in BitCam was a blast: we tried as hard as we could to guess the future wrong! The only reason we got FatBits right was because Bill Atkinson had already invented it. He also came up with the dithering algorithm used in the app.

Another big difference is today’s 64-bit processor: it can easily process the video signal at 30 frames/second. We throttled the speed to simulate the 16-bit processor in the mini pocket computer. Higher resolution settings are slower for a reason!

We even thought about the past while making the app’s promotional website. If you’re a web developer, take a moment to view the source at www.iconfactory.com/bc.html (even that URL is old skool!) Native apps aren’t the only thing that’s improved remarkably since we first started out!

And then there’s the price. BitCam is free to download and try out, just like the shareware we first sold at the Iconfactory. The difference now is that BitCam’s in-app purchase is 1/10th of what we charged in 1996. Your kind support will help keep us in business for another 20 years.

Finally, make sure to check out the credits screen: it’s our tribute to the folks that have helped us be a success over the years.

BitCam Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

A whole new level of sophistication!!!. If you're into selfies (and who isn't) this is the camera for you.

Love it!. For those of you saying it won't let you take a picture, you have to go to settings and allow the app to use your camera. It says so on the app before you even start using it 😒

Fun retro camera. If you enjoy dithering and one-bit graphics, this is a great app for it! Characteristic of any Iconfactory app it is well-designed and well-executed. The theming is really fun. The only thing it’s missing which I’d like to see is the ability to adjust the brightness threshold (or the pre-dithering exposure level). Sometimes it would be nice to tweak the process a bit to make the image look better. p.s. I was tickled to see this app finally updated after six years, so here, have a review! :)

Meh. Ideas for developers could do.. I see, this company has reputation. Given that. I don't see why I should pay for one feature if not any other picture effect could do. I would give this star at least a 4 or maybe a 5 given how if the app can save the original photo taken by the iPhone on this app. It would be nice, have the pixel format and also the regular normal format of it. Then maybe it'll get my $1.99

Epic. Love the cyber-vintage aesthetics. Good one

Amazing computer camera. Now you can use your pocket minicomputer to make instant digital images. They are rendered in true to life grayscale. Perfect way to preserve those priceless family memories.

Broken. Other reviewers are correct, the app does not recognize that you *have* allowed access to the camera until you restart the app. I couldn't get it to work until I force-quit the app and restarted. It's obviously broken.

So Cool. I’ve been a fan and customer of the Icon Factory for 50 years now. ;-) Yes we’ve both been around for awhile. The BitCam app is a wonderful blast back to the old 2 bit Mac graphics. The app or “Application” or even “Program” as they used to be called is nostalgic, simple and just plain fun to use. Friggin “Fat Bits!” Thanks Bill! Thanks Icon Factory.

Please allow converting old photos (cam roll). I'll review the new version 5 stars again if you do. I'm happy to pay $1-2 IAP for the feature too. Hopefully others will too!

Please bring back the old icon. Very nice app, but the darker bar at the bottom of the new icon adds unnecessary complexity making it harder to understand, and arguably less successful than the one that was there before...

Absolutely delightful.. BitCam is a joy to use. Works very well. Worthy of a classic Macintosh, and right at home on my pocket computer.

Fun, works great with other programs. I've been using this app in conjunction with Photoshop and Illustrator for screen printing and it's much easier to get the desired effect with this than messing with sliders. The colors option gives some variety, but I do wish it gave a blockier option.

Simple & Fun. This app is simple and fun to use. It is an interesting photo effect. I give it 3 stars because it is easy and has a great interface. 4 stars should be for apps that make your life run smoother and 5 stars are for apps that are essential tools you can't do without. I like the latest update.

Love It!. My new favorite app, but the ability to adjust contrast like on the Gameboy Camera would be fantastic

GREAT original app... This is rally a great app and there's none like this in the store.. and you can get some awesome results.. just wish there were two more features 1) video support 2) apply effects to existing camera roll file including #1 i.e videos too.. All the best..

Neat idea.... Fun little app indeed! Bumped rating up now that I know about the editing existing pictures is an option. App is simple to use and accomplishes it’s intended goal with aplomb. Far too few apps these day reach each of those goals. I don’t necessarily NEED an app like this but it sure is fun to play around with and I could actually see some technical uses for it in the future!

Props to the person who made this. But I still cannot believe how popular this app is , because of how unpleasant it makes me feel about how people would even want this, I've had a camera phone since 2003 way before anybody and trust me nothing was worse than having it that camera and having those super low res images.

WHY?. In 2016, why in the world would I want an app that makes my photos look WORSE? why? WHY?! I downloaded this app just to tell you guys ya crazy for giving it 5 stars. BOOO BOOO BOOOOO. Go HOME. And if you're at home, go stick your head in the ground. 8 bit camera...sheesh, good grief. As long as we're throwing out dumb ideas how about soggy bread, it goes down so much smoother! And what about ants in your pants? Oh yeah sounds like a great idea too; 5 stars for both. Finally, WHYYYYYY?!?

Love this camera. It’s fun. Thank you.

Sadè. App is trash

Very cool retro-styled camera app!. I love the interface of the app itself just as much as the photos it takes! A very fun throwback to older Mac software.

Love it. This is a nice app, but I do have one downfall. I accidentally installed the color graphics not really knowing what it was and now there is no restore purchases button...

Loved ❤️😱. Wow this is Amazing 🤣

Takin' pics like 1996. Wonderful fun, and classic (Mac) memories. Just think kids, this is how all digital pictures used to look. And we thought it was grand!!

It's limited on purpose — enjoy it for what it is. Like the developer says, they built it in an old-fashioned way to celebrate how far things have come in the 20 years they've been in business. The app works exactly as advertised, providing that little rush of nostalgia by immersing you in a 1996-style interface and taking low-resolution pictures. The controls produce clicks or other sounds when used — and the volume level is tied to that of your device's RINGER, not its audio volume. Maybe the devs did that intentionally as part of their retro project or maybe not, I don't know. Anyway, you've been warned.

Love it. iPhone X version please

So cool!. I love this app. But where it really shines is when you buy the color edition. It really adds to the photos and the cool retro look! The app is listed as iPhone only, but I'm using it on my iPad and it works fine no problem. I also like that there are three options for the photos as well as black-and-white and color. If you're wondering whether to get this app? Get it! It's well worth it for the free version, and a color upgrade makes it one of my favorite photo apps ever.

So simple. Nothing cool about this app

Neat idea, but kinda buggy. Had to force restart the app for it to notice it could take and save photos after granting permissions. Photos saved/copied/etc don't use FatBits even if you have them enabled which sorta hurts the charm of the photos. Hoping for an update with fixes soon!

Stylish nostalgia. Love the App. One suggestion, would be great to be able to import and covert photos from the camera roll. Many thanks.

*LOVE* this app, but it needs an update!. The folks at Iconfactory are the best (if you’re a Mac-using artist or designer, you *must* check out XScope!). This is such a great app, but it hasn’t been updated in 2 years+!! Can you please update it for the iPhone X & Xs screens, at least? Pretty please?? Please note: I haven’t even marked down your rating in an attempt to force you to do my bidding! 🤪 [Seriously though, keep up all your awesome work. I just downloaded Linea Sketch for my new 11-inch iPad Pro, too.]

please update. rotates imagine

Cool app, but buggy.. App freezes after you share to someone. Bad experience given I’ve paid for the color version. If you’re gonna make a user pay, whatever is in the app better be flawless.

GameBoy Camera?!. This app seems a bit like the old GameBoy camera! I loved it as a kid and this app brings back some great memories! I would recommend this app!

Love This!! - Video?. Brilliant! Got my color graphics card!! I'd LOVE to be able to shoot video with this. I'd do an in app purchase for video feature if it were possible.

Shutter button. Although it's asks to grant access to the camera when you first open the app, I still had to go into settings, turn it off and back on for it to work.

Turn. Why does the picture turn sideway when saved in photo album and can’t get it to turn upright

Wonderful. This is fun, educational (for people who didn't realize this is what we had to live with), and well done. I'm enjoying it a lot! I like the B&w mode better but bought color just to support your efforts. Thanks!

Restore is broken. I bought the color pack, but it disappeared and won't come back.

A++++ would fulfill nostalgic longing again. Beautiful app that hits all the right notes. The pictures are beautiful and the design is note-perfect. I had forgotten what a beautiful thing this classic dithering is. And how much less stressful selfies are when they don't capture every last little detail. Maybe not everything needs to be high res.

I love it. My favorite part of this app is I can convert my old photos to pixels

Is the lack of color graphics intentional?. I saw a color pic in the screenshots. I guess it's meant to be a tease cause my lowly iPhone can't support color graphics.

Really disappointed ☹️. My reason for being disappointed with this app is because every time I try to take a photo the app crashes until this can be fixed my rating is two stars. This will change to five stars when the issue is addressed.

Edit existing photo?. I do laser engraving and this app would make it easy But unfortunately it doesn’t let you edit existing photos Update: fantastic and the best results of any dither app on the App Store, please continue to support this program as it will help my business as well!

great fun little app. Fun little app. Plus the ability to convert my existing photos in my iPhone via the use of photo extension into black and white retro goodness is a +!

good advert. saw an ad for this on twitterrific, downloaded in 1 second. i like it already

Hahaha I love you folks so much!. See you in seven years, indeed. Here’s to that!

Fun, breaks App Store rules. Apps cannot show a for-pay feature in their screenshots without to noting that it's for-pay such as the color feature screenshot. Really fun app all the same, good job.

Love the concept but results seem odd?. I really love the concept and appreciate the effort. That said I feel like the results I am getting in the camera roll and after-the-fact are a little different than what I'm seeing when I'm actually taking the photo. The results that end up in my photos app camera roll seem higher quality and a little too "nice looking" compared to the retro look I'm going for when I take a photo. Has anyone else seen this?

Love the app! Please add photo import / library access.. Love it! So cool, but wish I could just use photos already in my photo library. Love!

Installing System Extension "colour" fails. The best quality images available on your Newton. The colour system extension, however, fails to load

Recommended to all pixel lovers!. Only thing that's needed is an option to import photos, otherwise it's one of the best camera apps :D

Buggy crashy. Freezes on iPhone 6s.

☺️. This is a pretty neat app, but I wish there was a way to mute the sounds.

:). It would make my day/life if there were a video-recording function of this app.

Love it to bits!. There is a lot of retro joy to be had in this app. The attention to detail is amazing. Even the way the dialog boxes appear on screen had me smiling. Nice work, Iconfactory!

As a camera, it’s great!. This the exact effect I want to achieve, and it has a cool simple / retro interface, but I wanted to use the effect on images in my camera roll and was disappointed to see there is no import function. Maybe they’re trying to stay authentic to the simplicity of retro technology, but it’s frustrating that there are no other apps that achieve the same affect with imported images.

Plz add record or import. Or inverted

Import. Please include the ability to import photos!!!

Handy way to take photos. The resolution is much higher than anticipated. Although I must admit my 14.4k modem is having some trouble uploading the graphics interchange format files to CompuServe. Luckily one of the sysops there introduced suggested minimizing the colour table and now I'm all good. Great application guys!

Simple Digital Nostalgia. Superb little camera app that brings back the feeling of photos on a classic 16-bit Mac. Even the interface and sounds are fun and bring you back in time. For the people asking to be able to import photos, it actually includes a plugin for the Photos app so you can apply the dithering effects to your existing photos. Or just snap a picture directly within BitCam then save it to your camera roll using an effect. The app is very functional even without the color in-app purchase so give it a try! The $2.79 color option is well worth it in my opinion, I bought it to support the Iconfactory.

Very cool. Love the old school menus and buttons.

Memories Abound. A beautifully designed homage to the Mac's past. (Thankfully, some of us owned a Commodore-Amiga back then. *wink*)

So retro. So gnarly.. Fun app for a fun reason. Brings back memories of Mousing Around.

Takes me waaaay back!. To the days of college IDs and Connectix QuickCams. Thank you!!

Pointlessly broken. Doesn't register the fact I'm pressing the shutter button. That's a pretty important function to leave out in an app like this

Nostalgia!. That's it...nostalgia. Love it! Thumbs up👍👍🏿

Great app. I love the app. It would be even better if it allowed for conversion of photos from my albums...

Fun way to take shots. Nice app

Fun nostalgic camera app makes me pine for System 7. It's simple. It's fun. The only negative is the amount of lag in Super-Res mode.

Doesn't work. How were you guys able to take a picture? Didn't work for me

Fun. It's 1985 all over again. Thank you.

Doesn't work. The camera button doesn't work in the app, I can't take photos.

A fun camera app. Nostalgic and fun. Color makes it above great and to fantastic.

Not worth downloading. 2 bucks for color pictures? No thank you

Won't take a pic. I bought everything on and it won't take a pic

Should support photo upload. Should support photo upload

I'd like to load pictures from the phone. That's it. Load and filter. That'd be awesome.

:). Thank you

O Manzie. Sprung for the color cus seriously why wouldn't you. My new frame of mind, pixilate this

Can't Snap. Won't let you take any pictures...

Shutter Button No Worka. Shutter Button No Worka!!!! Pretty important function of this app!

Horrible. Nothing shows up ont the camera, and when I try to take a picture, it crashes! Until the bug can be fixed, one star.

Don't like it. At first seems interesting app but it's not. Won't keep it

Sraly. Downloaded- wouldn't open- won't delete off IOS

Delightful. Simple and full of joy. This a photo filtering app that is just delightful to use.

Horrible. Won't let me take the picture. WHY IS THOS SO POPULAR?!

=). Neat alternative to your stock camera app.

boo. you have to pay for color

Game boy Camera AKA CANCER. This is cancer it's the game boy camera all over again, it even has more cancer than Jacob satorius.😷

App that truly delights.. Best of 2016 ( or is that 1986)

Cool. Cool I had fun with it for a couple minutes. Wish u didn't have to pay for the color ...

Awesome fun. Props to the pixel pushers. Great fun using the extension to process photos already taken.

Trip down memory lane. Good job with the dithering, folks! A 5th star for the 80's Mac interface.

Great Graphics Performance!. I found if I rebuild my desktop and reset the PRAM, I can successfully install the color graphics module.

Awesome in every way. This little app is just too much fun. Absolutely worth a download.

Awesome!. All more I could want is an edit extension to apply this effect to my existing photos.

❤️. God FatBits is so good

GG. I like this app. It's pretty cool.

Freezes. Freezes after first picture.

So good. Reminds me of the old days. Very pixels. Much 8-bit.

Great app.. I just hope the next update adds support for my Game Boy Printer.

Dialog Box/Picture. Takes me to system 6/7...so retro and yet so good. I expect to see 💣 or not 😀

Doesn't work. Button to take picture doesn't work. Was highly recommended but can't get to work. 😞

Fun and lovely in its own right.. Really it's not just a vintage aesthetic; the app responds to light in a beautiful and unique way that is quite fun to explore.

Nostalgic photos from a whimsical classic Mac UI. Many of the pics remind me of printing photos on the 'ol dot-matrix ImageWriter. 🤓👍 Great app!

Stole colors from PostYo!!!. That's not right

I love you. Thanks for this

Pure Fun. Whether an old school Mac nerd or not, this is awesome.

Excellent. My only complaint is that I can't use the front-facing camera. Need selfies please!

Insanely Great!. Brings back such fond memories. Really well done.
