• We've introduced additional confirmations and educational messaging in the app to help protect Signal users from phishing and social engineering attacks. As a reminder, never reply to chats pretending to be Signal, and never send your verification code, PIN, or recovery key to anyone. • Animated GIF searches are now much faster, but it's still up to you if you say what you mean or meme what you say.

Signal - Private Messenger Comments & Reviews 2026
Having issues sending messages why?. I was chatting with my friends on signal and to my notice I send another text on it and it says before I can send the text I need to verify it’s me not a robot I did the verification and it says verification done since 12hrs ago now the text haven’t been send but still asking to keep on doing verification and I keep on doing it I have done the verification like 20times now and till now they are not allowing me send text why??????? I have got this reported almost 3times and my friends have same issues also, get this fixed signal you should have upgraded more than this what if it’s emergency and you didn’t allow text to be send through it? I only like the app and the feature but with this you’re making it loosing interest in your app GET THIS FIXED SO I CAN SEND AND RECEIVE MESSAGES 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 This is going to a day now and I have updated the app and I complain to the support but they didn’t get back to me why all this
Getting annoyed. I have been using this app for about 2-3 years now. I closed my whatsapp account when FB bought it. I closed my FB account as well. I have promoted this app among my family and friends, however, I’m getting a little annoyed with the fact the every time I open it I must verify that I’m not a robot in order to be able to continue messaging. Many times the screen with that message freezes and doesn’t do anything. I need to close the app completely and open it again to find that I must click on the squares that have traffic lights to be able to read messages and/or send them. Why is it that I must verify every time? I make a small monthly donation but it still asks me to donate (granted, this donation request has stopped but only just recently). I hope you will be able to check (or to explain why) this issue. Other than that, I enjoy using the app for my written messages or phone calls (clear connection) with my family that lives overseas. Thank you so much
“Read More” function is backwards. Bummer that audible notifications no longer function. I’ve mostly stopped using the app because of this as I have to consciously look to see a visual indication that there is an unopened message. My biggest issue is with the “read more” function. If a message exceeds a certain number of characters it truncates and provides a handy “read more” button to expand the message. The issue is that when you tap it, the message expands and moves all the way to the bottom of the message vice expanding the message right at the point where it is cut off and the “read more” button is located. You have to scroll up to find where you left off. Really? This is a backwards UI. The message window should just expand from the point of the button and you can then continue to scroll down as you read instead of the current behavior.
Perfect Combination with Proper VPN. Signal is great. You configure the settings to your liking & it’s very private. You can enable face-ID, Thumbprint, & a pin. It allows disappearing messages, & calls, even video calls. The video calls rival FaceTime, which is surprising because I’ve tried many different video call apps, all seem to be sub-par to FaceTime. However, Signal is right there. I wish more were using it so the government can’t pry at our messages & companies like Facebook & Google can stay out of our conversations. Keeps us away from ad trackers with the combination of the VPN. None of your phone listening to you talking or typing. 4/5 stars simply because 5/5 makes no sense. People wouldn’t read the review & I want the company to make it better over time, not get complacent & do no future updates. It can improve in certain areas.
Good, but needs to remain extremely secure. I would give this 5 stars, originally I would give it 6 stars if it were possible, but am now concerned about potential hack ability. Even with end to end encryption, a big selling point here was that everything was stored locally and there was no server access. Now I can use delete for all. That means the server has access after the messages have been sent. I am also unhappy that I have to give out my phone number. I am hearing rumors of possible 3rd party products. And commercialization. I am willing to PAY for Signal just to keep it free of these. The more access to the platform others have, the less secure everything becomes. And no one likes commercials.
This App Has Some Big Quirks I’m Giving it Up. I love the security and privacy of this app. Also, it is usually superb for sending photos and video clips. Far superior to iMessage for photos and videos. But there are some painful weirdisms that creep in for some reason. Sometimes I won’t get a message for up to 24 hours when it was sent earlier. Usually I have good cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. My wife didn’t get my message all day nor did she get notified. When she went into the app, it suddenly appeared. Also, the word suggestions don’t appear when you tap on a word that’s not the right word. It doesn’t give you other options like other text programs which makes it more difficult to edit text messages. The one that bothers me the most is the sequence you go through to send a message. Especially when you attach a photo. It’s very easy to think you have sent a message when you haven’t. I can’t really explain why this is. I just know that on several occasions I thought I sent a message but when I went back to that thread it hasn’t been sent. You really have to pay attention. Make sure the message has been sent. Weird and awkward. I’m going back to iMessage. Giving up on this app!
Best Privacy App Yet. This is simply the best privacy app with everything neatly bundled into it. It has a nice authentication feature, sms & mms messaging & disappearing messages with people [to keep them clean if you’d like], calls, and keeps it all private, app switch privacy [keeping the screen blank for privacy while switching apps so wandering eyes cannot see the screen], and many more features packed into this powerhouse. To anyone experiencing any issues with calls, make sure your notifications are on and properly set with the app, and look into the settings in the app itself and it easily shows how to have your calls show up with the name [if you would like to] or just a call without a name. The settings are a breeze and make it very easy to understand. Very rarely you’ll have to re-register for push notifications, but that’s also very easily accomplished. If I could rate higher than 5 stars I would. 10 stars out of 5 stars is more like it...
Not so private. How is it privacy focused if it announces to the whole world that you are on signal? The developer responded “it’s not anonymous” and suggested their app is only about encryption. On their website, however, the first thing they tout is “an unexpected focus on privacy”. Still not sure how to square broadcasting your name to every single person on Signal that you might be connected too has anything to do with a “focus on privacy”. It sounds like the gist is that no one is snooping on your messages, but everyone knows your on there. What’s silly is that signal thinks it needs to be “more pervasive” for its concept to work, but with unexpected outting of your privacy it’s never going to become more pervasive because it sets the tone by undermining your expectations right out of the gate. Signal should stop using the word “privacy” in its marketing materials and replace it with the word “encryption” because that is all it’s offering. If you’re that worried about it, I’d just use a burner.
Several bugs, not nearly as optimized as other messaging apps.. While the concept of this app is good, it cannot live up to its name. There are numerous bugs, and none of them are getting resolved. The most critical bug is that you cannot send videos to people, even short 1-2 minute videos. It kees circling and never ends up sending. Also, this often happens while sending photos as well, which is odd. How can someone switch to Signal without using two of the most utilized and essential features of a messaging app? Additionally, there are several other bugs, but the two mentioned above are the most critical. Before I end this review, I have to mention: for the love of God, Signal, please consider adding a proper backup&restore feature. It would also be nice to transfer my data & chat to a second device like telegram and continue where I left off in my original device. There is certainly a lot of room for improvement. I, for one, will not use nor commit to Signal just yet.
VIDEO CALL HELP!!!!. Hello, I’d first like to start off this review by saying this has been one of the best apps! I’d like to give a shout out and a big thanks to the wonderful people at Signal for doing such a great job! I’ve been using this app for years now and I’ve only had one complaint/issue, that is when using the video calling feature of this app. We need to be able to switch the main camera view from the one calling and the one receiving the call!!! as it stands, it’s been very frustrating that when making a video call the one making the video call has to be on the small camera view the one receiving the video call is the bigger portion of the screen. SIGNAL PLEASE make an update soon! And update this feature, we need to be able to as initiating video calls be able to switch the camera as the initiator of said video call have the main larger portion of the camera screen if we choose to switch to that, because it’s very hard when trying to share something via video call to know that is being properly conveyed in the video to the receiver due to the fact, the one making the video call has no option currently except to stay in the very small thumbnail portion of the screen! To the wonderful people at Signal I beseech you please make an update regarding this!!!Thank You!!!!
BOOK DOOR TO SIGNAL APP EXPOSED. The service has now become pretty much useless. I no longer receive an audible or visual notice when people send me a message. Only once I click on the Signal icon do the alerts actually come in. Now I have to keep opening the app to check for messages. This is not the case with other messaging platforms. Yes, I allow full permissions for Signal. Additionally, I came here to update, but I dare not as Signal now allows third party stickers/ads. This now opens up a backdoor for hackers. Soon, Signal will shut down all users that don’t update. I use to boast how secure Signal was. Obviously the developers of Signal had long term plans to monetize their once highly secure communication service? What do we expect for Free anyway? Obviously Signal’s original Mission Statement has changed. Third party advertising has now become a security concern. I’m only here as a means to communicate with other hi level parties who feel safe using this app. That’s now going to change as word gets out that a backdoor for advertising has been installed in Signal’s app. Though no communication service is bullet proof, adding an additional layer of script to monetize Signal, (in my opinion) opens up a serious security breach that will eventually be exploited by hackers. Signal is not the only game in town. Once I get all of my contacts to migrate to a more secure app, I’ll be uninstalling Signal, as it doesn't alert me any more anyway. Cheers!
Not so great for audio messaging. I have used Signal for a couple years, mostly for regular messaging, but I send a ton of audio messages with friends. Switched over from iMessage last year after they started transcribing all audio messages with no way to turn it off. Love the encryption of Signal, but for audio messages it’s frustrating. First, the “send” button is WAY too close to the “cancel” button. Even being very careful, sometimes a long message will disappear instead of sending. It is enraging! A confirmation step would save a lot of misery. Recently, audio messages won’t load…spinning wheel of death, and it never loads so I can listen to it. Torture! Please fix whatever that is! I love this app and feel a few simple fixes would make a huge difference for us audio users, and would make it 5 stars for me. As it stands, I will round 3.5 up to 4.
Messages send paused. My signal app I only text up to 4 different people on signal when I open it then it brings up send paused I use the captach to complete verification it still doesn’t work you really need to make this app so good and canceled the send failed it affecting my job goodbye pls give me feedback and make the app flexible and suitable I need to text up to my channel so it can keep me busy at work but all my messages are failing I need my messages going right now the issue keep occurring every time I Could not send messages to people on signal what wrong please I need to text up so I could get my channel back ok it keeps loading please I need my signal app back to keep functioning properly I want to message some channels it on send paused it take me to use catapach please fixed it up it back please help me fix it up once again I am new again on signal please can you help me out I need my signal acct for new job
Amazing! 🥰. The perfect app. I love this for my long distance relationship. We don’t have to spend tons of money for international calls, we just use signal. Plus we each have tons of sticker packs and have so much fun sending the stickers and leaving each other voice messages. Love the sense of privacy as well. It’s great that signal also saves all your photos. I can easily go back and find his selfies or video attachments. Even a search feature for the chat so I can find a specific conversation if needed. Couldn’t hardly ask for a better app. The only suggestions I would have is to have an edit option (like discord has) so I can fix typos easily. And I would like to be able to have that “delete for everyone” option be always available. Especially since all the media we send stays under the media tab, it would be nice to clear out photos or videos we don’t need anymore. Thanks a bunch !
I like the options and simplicity. I switched from WhatsApp to here because they started with the channels, and I really like the privacy, options, and simplicity that signal offers. If you don’t like stories/statuses, you can turn them off, although I don’t mind them. I never get spam, and I can’t actually imagine them forcing you to have channels since they don’t even force you to have stories. I certainly hope I’m right in my assessment, but I really do appreciate signal. I don’t use all the proxy stuff because I would guess it was slow stuff down, but I’m sure it’s probably useful for some people in restricted countries. That being said, I still would be hesitant to let my children use this assuming they had a phone, and I would like it if they made it easier to fix wrong words with the auto type function, because the blue underlined words when you use talk to type have no way to choose other options like you would on WhatsApp or other messaging systems
Stickers have broken the app, unusable now. I was a very happy customer of this app since I found out about it but the insane race to the lowest common denominator, adding “stickers” to an app whose main purpose is secure and reliable communications have broken the application. Messages do not send, or send after hours, and in one epic case over a day later. No other application has an issue connecting to the internet or sending messages, including WhatsApp and FB Messenger. The “sending” icon gets stuck and nothing happens. If you go to the settings, you can see the “network status” switching between “connected” “connecting” and “offline” And before anyone blames my settings, I made sure the app has all the recommended rights, low battery mode is disabled and no app or connection restrictions are set on the app. This happens on both WiFi and LTE, so it is not tied to a bad WiFi or data connection, especially since I have tested it on multiple WiFi networks and not just my home one. So, tl; dr, add stickers, make communications impossible. Great move , I hope people enjoy their little cats and stuff while I look for a proper secure communications app...
Password Changed To iPhone Screen Password. I was really happy to begin to use Signal because I was reading reviews that said that the telegram app is owned now by Google which is a spy/database of everything you ever use the Internet for. I read that there is a button you need to push in Telegram settings to make your communications private. Probably most people never find out about that. I felt it was a betrayal of trust. I thought that signal was more trustworthy. However, I did see there was also a similar setting in signal that may be exactly like telegram. I guess true privacy is impossible? One other puzzling thing is that after entering my new signal password I discovered that when I tried to use it for the first time (and ever since then), the locked screen password entry page for my iPhone pops up instead. Does it give Apple text-message-censorship capabilities in Signal’s app? My entire intent is to have greater privacy, not to have my personal (I thought) text messages leaked to ... anyone.
Some issues but great privacy. Hey signal I love this app I appreciate an app that can respect my privacy but recently I have been having issues receiving messages. Often I get messages but no notifications and sometimes they all come in at once in a large batch if someone was sending message during a period of time. This use to happen sometimes but now it seems to be happening more and that’s not good because sometimes the messages are time sensitive and very important so please would you address this issue. And I would gladly give you 5 stars if it is addressed. ***update*** Previous issues were fixed but after most recent update the keyboard will now cover over top of the current conversation which I find very annoying please fix this thanks.
Calling is sketchy. Everything about Signal is fairly intuitive and easy to use, the texting features are great and easy to use with a load of GIFs and emojis to use. The call function leaves a lot to be desired. I would like to point out that I’m a GoogleFi service user in Japan which may play into my experience. The calling features are lacking greatly since I hit call and it’ll ring for a solid 30-60s with the message “Signal Connecting” then finally say “Signal connected” if it does connect and then the signal is spotty at best with a considerable lag between spoken words and when the receiver hears them which always leads to confusion. Also the video chat is considerably grainy and lagging as well which doesn’t make sense since i only use video chat when using WiFi at home with a 500Mbps speed.
It works. It actually works. It keeps others from getting into messages if your phone gets searched. I know this for sure. The only thing i would change is make it so as a default your messages dissapear at a certain time. Instead of having to manually go in and change it. Have it to where you have to manually change it to where they dont dissapear. And im not sure if you can make it to where you can send your location to someone or not. But i couldnt get it to do that when i tried. That would be a good add. But other than that. It keeps your messages private. It verifies you from time to time so noone is using your account that shouldn’t. It is a killer app. Keeps private private. And that is hard to come by in these times. I use it and recommend it. And its free. Why wouldn't you use it. Good app!!!!!
Doesn’t Work At All. After using signal for years and thinking it was pretty good (despite the backlog of features that haven’t been implemented for years, like any kind of backup situation), now it has stopped working completely. Messages delete themselves instead of sending and read receipts no longer work. I’ve sent a debug log to support >24 hours ago and no response yet. I’ll update if they do, but extremely disappointing. If you’re thinking of using it at all at this point, AVOID. Update: Support did contact me after a little over a day. They stated they are aware of the issue and there will be an update addressing it, with no time frame. So the app’s just unusable for now. Update 2: The app was updated and is now functional. Nothing mentioned about the issue in the patch notes. For putting my digital life on hold for days, -4 stars. For eventually fixing it silently, +1, I guess. Look elsewhere.
Question: If I use the “reply to” feature, what does recipient see on their screen?. Question: If I use the “reply to” feature, on the recipient’s screen, do they see “replying to you” or would they see “replying to their name?” I had changed a contact’s name in my phone and didn’t realize until after I’d hit send that I don’t want them to see what I’ve re-named them in my contacts list. So on my screen, it says “replying to contact’s name.” (I don’t usually use the reply-to feature, which quotes the message.) But I have a message from a different contact who used the reply-to feature to me to quote something and what I see on my screen is “replying to you.” (Not “replying to my name.”) Can anyone at Signal confirm whether the recipient can see what I see on my sent screen or if they see a different screen saying “replying to you?” Thank you.
Great communications app. Easy to use and secure.. With everything going on in the world today, it's nice to know there are alternatives to having your private conversations listened to, or your texts read by anyone else except for the people you sent them to. While I think most people are not involved in anything that would warrant any government agency from looking into the private conversations between people, I can understand the need for any government to have the right to acquire the permissions necessary for the purposes of national security. In the United States, that bar and burden of proof to seek these exceptions is extremely high, as it should be. And, (at least at this point), they are extremely rare. I am happy to have found a way to feel confident that my messages are not being scrutinized by any other eyes than those I intended to see the message. The app is easy to navigate and use, and the response is lightning fast. I have had very good experiences with texting and with voice calls as well, with the tools to know that the message was both sent and received. Sending a voice text is also easy and incredibly fast compared to other texting platforms. The sending and receiving of large files is also very easy and fast. I would highly recommend this app if you're looking for a secure channel of communication with both text and voice.
Critical 21st-Century App. Hackers can get a hold of text logs and gather bits of identifying information about you. The world’s leading governments are aiming for a state of omniscience on every citizen’s activity and thoughts. Advertising companies want everything you’ve ever said so they can feed their predictive algorithms and sell their ever more detailed profile of your personal psychology to scammers and politicians who want to manipulate you. Our conversations can be used against us in ways that are hard to predict or even imagine. The right to communicate securely and privately is #1 in the Information Age. That’s why Signal messenger, which has proven time and time again to be the cutting edge of practical, user-friendly communications encryption, is my favorite app ever. Its also just a well-featured app better than any text msg app I’ve ever used. IMHO there’s no functional advantage the FAR less secure and private WhatsApp has other than its user base (lots of ppl use whatsapp to bc its a popular app others are on across the world). Signal’s use is growing and will only grow bc the developers have done an amazing job making a smooth job that keeps people safer at a time that we all should jealously guard our information.
A WhatsApp hater. It needs to be as sufficient as WhatsApp. Multiple calls easier and able to share files, pics and videos etc. Needs a bit more work. I would like to be able to use it solely instead of relying on WhatsApp for the things that signal can’t. I do love signal but needs to be perfected !!!! ASAP. should be friendlier to conduct business as well personal stuff. WhatsApp is not better than signal. But Signal needs to grow some balls for all the people that just signed up for it. And not let them down. As they would look for another platform that can do all the aforementioned!!! Over all it’s a great app. For one. Sharing a file, image or a video is not possible when pushing the share button as the menu opens with all the other apps to share with. You can share with all except signal. As it freezes. You push on the signal icon and nothing happens. Then you’re forced to copy and paste it. It’s time consuming. Pls fix this issue as to maybe fix it to where you can also see WHEN a recipient read the msg. THAT WOULD BE GREAT. !!!
They try hard to get access to contacts. Beware. My friends and I got this to be we hope to be more secure, and it may in fact be that. On the other hand they do everything they can to try to make you add them to have access to contacts. There’s no reason they need access to all of my contacts, they want that so they can gather the information and eventually sell it or use it for marketing. If that’s not the case They will read this comment and fix the problem. But I suspect this is them long-term way of selling contact information. So when my friends use @…. It pulls up names so you can select who you are writing to and inserts the name you select into the text without type out my name…. However on my end when I receive it it doesn’t show my name it shows my phone number…. Both my friends, one of them by accident because it ask you so often to connect to your contacts and the other on purpose added their contacts it works properly on their end but I’ve never allowed access to my contacts nor do I plan too. Now if I click my phone number in the text that they sent my name pops up, so the program does know what my name is because it’s in my profile, but a little pop-up suggested I add my contacts…. This is proof they’re trying really hard to get access to your contacts and in my opinion and they’re gonna use it for marketing and selling later. Just be aware this program is not a panacea
To Date the Best Communication App for the Public. C’mon people… Are you comfortable with any random person reading the messages you write to your friends or family? How easily can your OWN words be taken out of context and used against you? Think about it… How would you like a random person interpreting YOUR words with THEIR limited knowledge of who YOU are or who YOU are communicating with…Think about it.. Anyone who has the POWER to access your communications, and has the time and resources to do it OBVIOUSLY wants to compromise YOUR position.. Why make it easier for them??? PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR LOVED ONES BY OFFERING THEM PRIVACY from people who would only harm NOT PROTECT you. use SIGNAL if you care about your thoughts, ideas, feelings, plans, locations, anything that could give an adversary an advantage over you… Play life smart. Survive.. Here is a simple tool built by people who value one of the few tenets that make our existence free… PRIVACY
Nightmare editing messages on my iPhone XR. I don’t know if this disfunction is related to the particular phone (iPhone XR) that I am using Signal on now or if it is the same on other phones, but the “cursor” control on Signal is a disaster now. It is a nightmare trying to move the cursor to where you want it, or to highlight a specific section of your message. I am completely unable to move the cursor more than a couple lines away from its current location at a time (and the text window doesn’t extend to more than 4 lines tall), so i have to scroll a couple lines away, click somewhere to move the cursor in the direction of where i want it to go, and repeat over and over again until it finally gets there. If i try to move it further than that, the window just jumps back to the area where it is currently located and moves it to some random location nearby. Highlighting a portion of your message is impossible; it jumps from one end of the message to the other and will not allow you to scroll slowly to where you want to stop highlighting. It is so stupid ~ I recommend typing messages in another app and then pasting it into signal when you are done. Also, FYI, if you want to copy text from a signal message, hold your finger on the message and then click on the little icon at the bottom of the screen that looks like two pieces of paper - nothing will ever appear that says “copy”.
Fails to Notify. On 3 separate occasions, Signal has completely failed to notify me of messages (and yes, I have all notifications turned on (sound, banner, lock screen, etc.)). Given that I only use Signal to talk to a couple people roughly once a week because it's the only messenger program they use, 3 times is a lot! None of my other messaging apps have this problem, and it's totally unacceptable from an app whose primary purpose is communication. On two of those three occasions, Signal did finally give me the notifications the moment I reopened the app to double check the conversations several hours later. On the remaining occasion, I was expecting Signal to potentially fail again, and so I kept the app open and switched to it every few minutes. *Despite this*, the thread only updated the next morning, finally notifying me of a message that had been sent to me the day before. During this entire period I had continuous internet access. For me, the added security Signal affords is completely overshadowed by this glaring deficit.
Hey everyone!. Guess who just joined signal! Any one of anyone on your phone contact list who just joined signal, or, better yet maybe even you! I really love the security feature of blasting to everyone in your contact list that has signal that you just joined signal! It's perfect for maintaining secrecy and discretion, letting everyone in my whole contacts with signal know I just joined signal helps me signal to them that security is one of my primary concerns. This way, anyone else trying to be discreet and secure is fully aware that I'm also available for secret, private p2p direct IM. It's kinda like, okay, if you're on signal and part of the elite secrecy, end-to-end encryption specialists, the very first thing I'd like to so is broadcast to everyone I know with the app that I'm finally part of the club! Really pretty genius feature!!
Love the app!. This app is absolutely amazing, and it’s very easy to use, especially for those of us who are blind. But, there is one little thing that I would like to suggest. This is actually something that my friends and I were just talking about a little while ago, so thought I would share this suggestion. When we go to record a voice message, it would be helpful for there to be a feature where voiceover lets those of us who use it to let us know when recording has been locked. I say this because when we go to lock a recording, we just have to swipe up with one finger, but there is no feedback to let us know if the recording has been locked or not. So, if there could be a way to fix that for the next update, that would be greatly appreciated. But other than that, this app is great, and I absolutely love using it!
Cant send multiple pictures. I love the fact that signal has an end to end encryption, and we don’t have to worry about our data being collected and sold. However, my family and I recently moved from WhatsApp group chat to signal group chat. Sending multiple picturesOn the WhatsApp group chat was possible, but sending them on the signal group chat doesn’t seem to be. I have an iPhone XR, and I try to select multiple photos from inside the app to send to my family, but an error message appears for about a quarter of a second before disappearing, and doesn’t work. I also try going into my photos app, selecting multiple photos and sending them via signal that way, but it also doesn’t work. How can we make it so that we can send multiple pictures easily? I don’t have this problem with text message app, Facebook messenger app, WhatsApp, or telegram. Only signal. I want to keep using this app, but the photo problem makes it very hard
Wow I love it. Everything about this app is pretty much spot on it is the best way to chat with your friends and not feel nervous of people watching. The timer feature is extremely useful in allows both parties to set a Time limit on the message very helpful. I have been using this app for almost 2 years now and have sent all my friends over only way to communicate. Reason for writing this review is I would like to change one option if that is something you guys would consider and that is changing the calling feature so it gives you another menu so you don’t just click it and it calls right away and tells the user that you try to call them. Just make some other second screen that allows you to confirm the call but other than that this app is perfect.
sadly, this is turned into an app of annoyance. Every time you load the app and asked if you want to turn on notifications doesn't give you the option to to dismiss that pop up permanently. It just says rudely "will remind you later." you'll remind me later? I don't want you to remind me later! I have the notifications turned off for a reason. Just because some people like having notifications doesn't mean that all people do. Clearly, the developers are just harassing their customers to do what they want you to do. Absolutely no respect at all. To make matters worse, I attempted to nicely suggest that they change that pop up. I sent a message through the app to them. They just responded. Oh, you have the wrong version of the app. Please update it. Well went into the App Store. And confirmed that indeed I do have the most recent version of the app. So then I email them back in response to the email they sent me where they have "please reply above this line"and they just really say you can't email us this way you have to respond through the app Well guys, I have to say I have never seen such rude in confidence in my life. That's why you get one star. Really if there was an option to give you zero I will give you zero.
Thanks with a plea. I love signal, and I try to get everyone I know to use it. There’s a lot of friction for that, unfortunately, but such is life. Thanks to the developers for making a secure mode of communication. I’m giving this four stars for two reasons: 1) signal calls are much less reliable than regular Wi-Fi calls from other apps. I’m not really sure why this is, but it seems like when I call others sometimes the phone just doesn’t ring. I’ve called my wife’s phone while it was in the same room to test this, but I’ve seen it happen with others numbers too (I.e. it’s not just her phone from what I can tell). Dead reliable calling would really help me recruit more friends to this app. 2) please please please make it so the app can go into wide mode when the phone is turned on its side. For those of us with large hands and normal size iPhones typing on the portrait width keyboard is somewhere between annoying and painful. One must crook one’s thumb at pretty sharp angles to hit all the keys especially those on the palm adjacent side of the keyboard. I have no idea why this app doesn’t have this feature when most apps seem to. Honestly if the App Store didn’t allow typing in this fashion I may not have written this review! Thanks again devs for a safe channel of communication.
(UPDATED) Begs you to donate as of version 5.57. Update: The bug mentioned previously in my review has been fixed as of version 5.57.1. However, I don't like the idea that there still no way to permanently prevent the donation banners from appearing at the bottom of the app. At least it will only show up occasionally now. Changed from 1 star to 3 for fixing the bug. Original Review: This app now constantly shows banners at the bottom of the screen asking you to donate. If you decide not to, guess what your only other option is? "Not Now." Yes, that's right. The cursed "Not Now" is your only other option. And while I have no problem with donating and I may do it on my own time, just know that trying to prevent me from having a choice will make it less likely that I would do what the company is trying to get me to do; which in this case is donations. In the past, choosing "not now" would make this banner go away at least for a few months (your mileage may have varied). Now it comes back immediately after you close and reopen the app. There is no way to turn off these banners. No matter how many times you press "not now," it always comes back if you leave the app for even a second and then reopen it. I will probably delete this app if this doesn't get fixed or removed.
Feature Request.... I know you guys are busy of late with user migrating over. I have had the app since it’s release. One thing I was wondering is if Send with Siri functionality will be added in any upcoming future release. Where this really comes in handy is 2 fold for me; 1. In the car with CarPlay, so I can just speak the message without needing to see the screen. 2. Anywhere else I might be in iOS, like a WEB Page & want to share that with a friend. While the Signal app, shows in the list of app, that takes multiple taps to invoke the send option, but for apps that support it, users & the respective app, will show as a “recent” item, which allows you to save multiple steps in selecting both the app & the person to deliver it to in a single touch. Even the most recent update this week, added an extra step to have to tap (tho I know it allows for sending to multiple people). So, I would love to see sending with Siri & iOS share sheet “Recent” support. RMM
Poor notifications, requires SMS authentication. Cons: You usually won’t get a notification when someone messages you on Signal (occasionally it works but not often). This has been a complaint with everyone I use Signal with… to the point we SMS each other the word “signal” to let each other know we just sent a message in Signal. 🤦♂️ Also, registration requires an SMS authentication, which is just horrible given how easy it spoof a phone #. The messages may be secure but you really don’t know who you are talking to. Finally, maintaining your message and account history after a phone upgrade is touchy at best. There’s a good chance you’ll lose your conversation history and you might even get locked out of your own phone number. Account transfer is not well implemented. Pros: Decent user interface (not as good as Apple Messages so if that’s what you’re looking for, you’ll be disappointed). Viewing media in Signal isn’t great. PDF, images, etc., don’t display as well as you would expect (compared to Apple Messages). But, it works, just annoying. Text editing and cursor navigation has become very glitchy. Recent updates have made it very hard to edit long messages. And of course, end to end encryption and security. If that’s what you are looking for Signal is probably the leading app… at least for now. Other options are coming fast (like Session, which is a fork of Signal, but it’s still young and needs time to mature).
Signal by default.. Less noise and more Signal please! That's been my mantra since going on a Social Media diet years ago, focusing more on what privacy means to me, and what it means for where we're going as a society. Signal Messenger aligns well with my values. I know it's not for everyone, but it really should be. Has all the features I need to communicate safely with my inner circle and not worry about big corps cashing in on my communications in any way, because it's not a profit driven entity. I do still have to use other messengers because of folks who just haven't made the switch, but at least they're also encrypted. One thing I do wish is that more Open Source desktop projects packaged Signal as a messaging client with their distros same as they do with the Firefox web browser. I think that would help Signal get even more traction. Otherwise it's my default on every platform I use and one of the first apps I install.
My new default communication app. The front end of Signal, and its user interface, is absolutely wonderful. It is as smooth and pleasant to use as iMessage for sure. Knowing that my messages and calls are end to end encrypted brings a great peace of mind to one’s day to day conversations. But it’s not just pretty and functional on the front end, the technical details and workings of the back end as revealed in Signal’s documentation really shows, in my humble opinion, that this app does what it’s makers say it does, and that the developers do not make false or exaggerated claims about their work. Most importantly, again in my humble opinion, it shows that the beautiful and functional front end, the technically impressive back end, and the resulting full stack of this app was developed by engineers that really care for, and have passion for, the privacy and security of their end users as well as privacy and security overall. It is a rare thing indeed, in this day and age, for a business to back up and follow through on their promises regarding their product. I will use Signal until the day I die unless things somehow dramatically change for the worse. I’m not normally a review writer, and when I do I could never be described as being verbose in what I have to say about something I’m reviewing but Signal and the developers behind it deserve all the praise we can muster! Thank you for the fruits of your labor enhancing my quality of life and peace of mind :)
Switch immediately. This program was recommended by a friend who thought the government was after him. Turns out, they were not, and still don’t care at all, but now I have this texting program which is extremely secure and also probably easier to use than actual texting. It doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, it sends clearer voice messages than any program I have used , texting is easy, there’s different gifs here, and anyone w a smart phone can use it. I am converting everyone I know to it! If I had more money I would donate, and it’s on my list to do when I start making more. Plus, you can talk about how the moon landing was faked by Bigfoot when his contract with the CIA to fight lizard people at the flat earth ice wall was over and not worry about what people think! What a time to be alive. Except for JFK. Thanks a lot, Amelia Earhart.
Latest update of app doesn’t show attachments. Love the app, and until this last version I would say that all it really needed was a way to assign any custom iPhone alert to an incoming message. The current version gives options, but doesn’t allow you to use any alerts on the phone. That, however, is a customization, so no big deal, but this last version broke the attachments. Now when I attach anything from the Signal side or to Signal through the phone side, it doesn’t immediately show up. Sometimes you can exit the chat itself and go back in, and sometimes if you shut down the app and reopen they will show, but most of the time I have to wait for a reply for it to show, so I never know if it was sent. I’ve also noticed that it sometimes puts my messages in the wrong order. For instance, I will see the reply above the original message. That, too, eventually fixes itself but it’s very annoying and has only started happening since the newest version was installed.
Mixed bag. Lots of features (Gify, stickers, reacts, self destructing messages), but it requires you to give out your phone number to everyone you talk to, does not allow specifying a different server, and beyond those privacy concerns, it has gone downhill lately in terms of usability and security as well. It now it forces a PIN even if you don’t want one. Private keys are sent through the server to enable moving from one device to another. Signal used to store private keys in hardware and it was impossible to export them. This ensured that nobody could ever covertly get your key. They removed this security protection and do not even provide an option to use the more secure key storage. The Signal developers could have enabled a smooth device transfer and kept the keys in hardware by having the old key sign the new one so others will 1.) know that the new key is new 2.) know that it is legitimate, and 3.) be able to verify the move using another communication channel if they suspect something is amiss. The Signal developers decided against this. Given the developers’ recent decisions, and their unwillingness to allow people to use their system without divulging their phone numbers, earns this app 3 stars. If they put more focus on privacy, security, and allowed connecting to private servers, it could easily be a 5-star app.
Why did you get rid of unlimited bandwidth?. I have gotten so many people on this app since many years ago. Then I tried to send a big file and it has a limiter on it now. So I had to go to Telegram for large file transfers. They have to be 100% secure. I thought Telegram and you were the same company or related. But a recent article on secure apps said Telegram is not open-source. I thought I remember it being that. Anyway, when faceBook bought WhatsApp I went on there and told about 50-people on it that the data mining user abuser Zuckerberg bought this company and top people that started the app bailed over questionable “tweaks” he wanted them to do so they each resigned as got worse and now all are gone. At least the privacy-pillars of the company. This was 5-star all the way until you did away with unlimited bandwidth. Why?? Does it clog or bottleneck the system? How can Telegram get away with it and you can’t? Any plausible way of brining it back? It really the only app I fully trust besides just encrypting and decrypting with keys. Which is a pain and has its limitations too. Huge, huge fan brought 30-40 people here from FB-WhatsApp. Just bring back the bandwidth please! I will change my review, promise.
Password Recovery. I like the privacy and protection Signals offers, end to end. What I do find annoying is the inability to retrieve your password or key to change in the very likely instance when you forget your password and/or lock yourself out, misplace 36 numbers and you’re done, finished. You lose all your contacts. I get the security aspect but it’s rather unsettling knowing I mistake and you loose everything. Additionally I recently had to replace my phone and the restore process would not work not matter what I tried. The app is great but I question the security when key features fail. And as of recent the app has been not working properly, can’t call out, calls not connecting messages not being received, what’s up as of late?
Horrible spam mitigation. I have been a Signal promoter for years. I even pay to support Signal. So it pains me to give it a 2-star rating. But here’s why: the new anti-spam measures are generating way too many false positives. Context: in an effort to harden our team against BEC, I had my team (~25 people) join Signal so we can use it as a secure method for out-of-band confirmation of sensitive requests and I created a group of the team for sensitive announcements (e.g. “We think there may be a malicious actor on the network!”). The problem is that one or more of these actions has now apparently marked me as a spammer and every time I try to message a team member I am forced to go through multiple rounds of Captchas! It is AWFUL. Practically unusable. I’m not trying to spam anyone! But now I’m envisioning how panicked I will be if I’m trying to send a warning to the team and instead Signal is making me jump through Captcha hoops! It will also be embarrassing if I now have to move the entire team to some other usable messaging app. They’ll be like, “Ugh! You just made us do all this!” We even took the time to verify numbers! Why does Signal think I am spamming people with whom I have verified numbers?!? 😞
Privacy is Paramount. To have protective means to share feelings or the importance of concealing confidentiality of business(though, legal) is crucial to my ability to safely discuss aspects that under the Patriot Act. When encryption and guaranteed protection has never been more critical. Laws that can be used effectively to exposé transactions or bidding on project can effectively destroy a business. Exposure without strict privacy protocols may be subjected to a summons/subpoena and quite a few of admissible court documents allow a competitor to utilize your tactics or choice of personal approach is susceptible to malicious intent. Without protecting your business model an adversary may find through open channels a necessary means to infiltrate your intimate and professionally protected approach with information regarding a particular or specific piece of information that may in turn hurt your bottom line and overall success.
UPDATE PLEASE!. I love this app! I’m switching from an iPhone to a Pixel and since I won’t be able to use Facetime anymore, this is my go-to app. Messaging is great and video calling is good quality. However, the only thing I seriously miss about Facetime (and WhatsApp because it has the same feature) is that while you are on a video call, you can open different apps on your phone and still see the person you are calling in the bottom corner. Signal, sadly, does not have that feature. I work a lot on my phone while I’m on calls, so it’s a bit frustrating not being able to see the person I’m talking to, and for them it gives a “Paused” screen, which people have told me that it seems like I’m not paying attention to them. Hopefully this will be updated! 5 stars if it weren’t for that little feature.
One of the beat chat apps period. I started using Signal about two years ago, after being disillusioned with Facebook Messenger, Google Hangouts and WhatsApp. I tried Telegram and then Signal. Signal had some polish missing, but it was by far the best in terms of security and also in terms of my ability to communicate. I can easily keep conversations going on my phone and multiple desktops independently, something I believe no other secure chat application has, and I don't have to worry about big tech spying or censorship. Signal today is in my opinion a much better experience than Facebook or Google delivers, or even what you get from Telegram. The UI design is better than WhatsApp at this point. In fact, I noticed recently that Facebook Messenger copied the Signal UI for giving arbitrary emoji responses to messages. Download the app. You won't regret it.
Need revisions. This app needs to be edited so that the administrator/creator of a group can select multiple people to remove from the group at once. Another much needed feature is for the administrator/creator to be able to delete all the old messages in a group from EVERYONE. That way, certain chats can be set up one time and then easily maintained by removing temporary members & outdated irrelevant messages WITHOUT deleting entire chat—only to have to set up another chat afterwards with the same group name—and then having to invite all the permanent members again and wait for them to accept etc. Also I don’t know why the app doesn’t easily detect all contacts from my phone Contacts when building groups and adding members. It easily detects some Contacts, but not all. The ones who aren’t detected by name, I have to look for their phone number, type the phone number into the Signal search field. It becomes cumbersome when we are building a dozen or more chats with the same 30 people in each chat. Hope the developers can offer an update with these features soon. Thank you!

Secure, Private, and User-Friendly Messaging. Signal stands out as the premier choice in the crowded landscape of messaging apps. Its emphasis on security and privacy is commendable and unmatched by competitors, making it a reliable option for those who prioritise these elements. The cross-platform functionality enhances its appeal, offering the convenience of seamless messaging across various devices. This feature enables users to communicate without being tied to a single device or platform, providing a level of flexibility that is highly appreciated in today's fast-paced world. Furthermore, despite its strong focus on privacy and security, Signal does not compromise on user experience. The interface is clean, intuitive, and easy to navigate. Overall, Signal sets a high bar for what a messaging app should be - secure, private, and user-friendly. If you value your privacy and want a versatile messaging platform, Signal should undoubtedly be your go-to app.
Great messenger app. Just please fix the issue where pictures drift off-screen as you zoom in on them making it impossible to zoom in to certain parts of an image. Calls need to be more reliable to replace the Normal phone app or another service. That said, I do like the auto-reconnect after dropping out. Happy with it though, and much prefer it over iMessage or Telegram.
Love it, but.... Love it but it interferes with camera if app is open in the background (iPhone XS) and other apps can’t use the camera at the same time as it being open. Would be even better if video calls worked with groups and even more spectacular if a seperate camera device supported video call on my tv ( think Facebook portal ). Keep up the good work!!
Signal lacs accessibility. Signal is a great app with excellent audio quality due to its AAC in coding. However it is a nightmare for people who have vision disabilities and need to use the Apple voiceover screen reader. This is because the whole audio goes muted when you are sending a message so you cannot hear where voiceover is on the screen. Another issue is that the focus randomizes on various buttons and elements therefore being unpredictable, so that if you lock the recording button and unless you are very good with your spatial awareness you cannot find the button to complete sending your message. As an access technology trainer I cannot recommend this app until these issues have been rectified and the unlabeled buttons have been labeled.
Good App but with minor bugs. Overall experience is good. I recently switched to signal due to privacy issues in WhatsApp. Then found that this app has minor bugs and need fixes. 1. My contacts who have signed up and started using signal are not shown in the app’s contact list. While some of them appear, many are missing. I had to manually search for them to make them appear in the contact’s list. 2. Unable to create groups. It errors saying the group cannot be created. No further details are shown. I was able to create only one group after many attempts. The subsequent attempts to create newer groups are failing. Please fix the above two issues.
Crashes on iPhone 12 Pro Max trying to set up. Urgent update needed. This is the only way to get your attention. I cannot set up signal on my new iPhone because the app crashes when I select Transfer from Old iOS device. Update: I received a response. Apparently it was fixed with an update. That said, my previous installation was made with an old phone number, so I still may have run into problems with 2FA setup on the new phone. I got my friends to re-add me to a chat group in any case.
Data deleted!!!. I went from loving signal to being appalled in one day. When I received a new phone and transferred my data across via Apple I assumed (like every other app) that my signal data would transfer. It does not. There is nothing on the app warning users that if they change phones their data will be deleted. I can’t find any mention of how to back up data. Customer service also unhelpful. When writing to ask about this I’ve only received automatic responses telling me to update - despite the fact that I have. After searching further, I’ve been informed that to update properly I need to reinstall signal but wait … “ Uninstalling Signal will clear your message history.” It says. But, there is nothing listed as to how to back up or save those messages instead. Really unhelpful and sad.
Best message app ever!😁. This app is so amazing. It is just like WhatsApp but with more privacy. It’s easy to use and has many cool features also if you deleting another message app and telling everyone to move over to signal you can make a group, send the link to people so when they are in signal that can press the link and automatically join into the group. So if your reading this review and wondering is you should download this app I have your answer YES
Why not choose privacy?. Signal is a great messenger app, does everything you need it to do and more. The killer for me though is that it’s not owned by a company which has shown time and time again to be irresponsible with people’s data, and to allow that data and connections to be used in ways that are fundamentally undemocratic, bad for people’s mental health and even complicit with human trafficking and other types of violence. Moving to Signal is an easy step to take to help create a better world.
Leaving the app. The Signal app was once a great app. It worked. HOWEVER , Over the last 12mths, each update has progressively destroyed the usability and experience. Images sent were ALWAYS lower quality than than an image sent via iMSG. Messages were sometimes not received for upto 24 HOURS after they were sent (even though the app indicated the delayed messages were “sent”. Settings were tried using both the Signal servers or not - but results remained the same - delayed messages, and poor quality photos!! Tomorrow 3 Sep 2024 is the last day before the app has said it will no longer work without updating. I’ve moved to ProtonMail permanently. (At least ProtonMail sends and receives attachments in original quality!!) I also understand that SignalApp is changing to 64bit, but why they ditch the older 32bit services is unfortunate for those people who just enjoy using an app that’s not Apple or Google spyware and use the app without any intention of criminality. Yes it’s going to be disappointing leaving Signal, but it is what it is. Unfortunately, 1 star was the lowest I could give.
Security and ease. There’s no perfect texting platform but Signal definitely comes close. I would recommend either iMessage, signal and WhatsApp (don’t like that Meta owns it and can access the metadata but everyone is using it and it is more secure than telegram). don’t forget that WhatsApp is using Signal’s E2E encryption method so what more is there to ask to use the company that built it itself! With signal, it is clean and easy to use, no bloatware features. iMessage is also great but I don’t think the implementation of its mobile number verification is done well, especially for people who travel a lot or change sims or don’t have sims that can do international sms! Sorry for the spreaded thoughts, but I do endorse Signal. You guys please keep doing what you do!
Shakey reliability. While Signal’s still my first choice when messaging my friends and family, we’ve had a lot of issues with messages not sending through until 1: The recipient opens the chat, where the unsent messages suddenly flood in. 2: Just send randomly later. Other than that it’s a great service, it’s pretty bare bones so if you’re used to Viber or Line where you get a sticker shop, a currency system and the like, maybe this isn’t for you, but if you want just a straightforward messaging app it’s very good for that.
One BIG problem. This has honestly replaced WhatsApp for me. But there is one humongous problem that they need to fix as soon as possible… If you are knee deep in a voice recording, say you are eight minutes in, and somebody calls… Or you dare accidentally tip your phone sideways…Or even if you accidentally press the side button on your phone which turns the screen off… the ENTIRE voice recording not only stops, but it is completely wiped from existence! Gone forever! It’s as if it never existed and you just wasted 8 minutes of your life. Honestly guys, please fix this ASAP, it’s horrendous!
What’s app-10 , signal +infinity. Not for profit so please do donate if you can afford too, and founded by an ex original what’s app founder. With Zuckerbergs take over of what’s app which brings data mining everyone he possibly can and enforcing rules on existing what’s app subscribers no wonder most sensible people are switching to signal! Great platform and very much similar if not even more user friendly than other apps
Great Privacy Preserving App. This is a very secure, privacy first app. Even the ubiquitous WhatsApp can track so much of your metadata without having to read the content (who, when, where, how long you chatted). Not Signal - it has real privacy. Plus it’s owned by a non-profit so they don’t have the temptation to harvest your data. This means it has a few quirks users need to be aware of, though, like ‘forward privacy’ so even if someone hacked your account they couldn’t read your old messages. This means it’s difficult to transfer data to a new phone. If you can live with that, it’s a great app that’s constantly improving.
Jester. This app is wonderful just it’s missing some features that would attract a lot of users. Such as being able to pin messages in a group chat as me and the boys have a meme only group chat and a pinned message for rules would help a lot. When inviting new people to a group they cannot see previous messages, that would be a great feature aswell as you already have disappearing messages. When an administrator changes the background it would be amazing if it was visible to everyone. thanks heaps
I have a problem with this good app. First of all, thank you for developing this app continuously. However, I have a problem with it that has been going for months now, and I have been waiting for it to be addressed in one of your updates. The problem is that I cannot change my profile picture. Every time I try to change it with any photo, it doesn’t work and shows and error message “profile update failed”! Could you please fix this or tell me how to fix it?
Great app, requires feature enrichment though. This is a great alternative to WhatsApp. Very stable and comparable features. However, hoping that the app will improve and have all the good features of WhatsApp. Few examples. A. Indication for a read message. B. Photo upload does not seems to have compression/image size reduction C. A image with time expiry needs a notification if the recipient is attempting screen capture. D. Save to disk/gallery
Brilliant. Was recommended this app for messaging. It’s great and secure. I really like how customisable it is (even down to the logo look). It’s very handy that members aren’t automatically added to groups and that they must accept the invite. Saves the hassle of being in groups people may not want to be in. It would be great if you could change settings so that photos are automatically saved to your camera roll assuming that doesn’t impact the security of the app.
Annoying verification. Signal requires me to do a lot of repeated and ambiguous verifications after I posted negative news of China and criticized the CCP! The possible answers might be more than one but signal insists there is only one correct answer, for example, the biggest animal! The pictures are digitally modified and blurred and only show a part of the animal or object! I clicked all choices for the same verification after failures but signal still says I failed! There is no correct answer for such verifications! How unfair! Verification has been more complicated, time-consuming, vague and annoying!
Signal’s strength may also be most infuriating. I really hate that I have no control over my message history if I lost my device. I have one iPad and I needed to erase and restore. But even if I had backed my data up encrypted, I could not restore it to the same iPad. There is also no other way offered that allows me to preserve this. If my phone is lost, that’s it. All my messages history, gone. Surely there must be some way this could be restored. After all, during use Signal asks for my credentials, yet it goes above and beyond that and I cannot rely on Signal for important historical threads like other solutions.
Buggy. A few issues I constantly experience: 1) About half the time I go to send an image, when I press send, the app crashes and the image doesn’t send. I often have to restart my device to get it to work. Which only lasts a few days before it starts crashing again. 2) A lot of the time my message just won’t send for sometimes hours. It’ll look like it’s sent on my end, but there’ll only we one tick below the message. Then a few hours later a second tick will appear and the recipient can actually see it and respond. Not great.
Love the privacy and architecture, and the quality the of Signal app.. But it would be better without using a number as the identifier. The removal of the phone number and the usage of a non central ID of some sort like Session app would be great and am sure it’s the next step! Perhaps also decentralised servers but that’s a different architecture and ball game all together.
Improvement needed. It would be nice to know when the other person or people are online, also it also would be nice to be able to turn off the sound of when sending messages as it's not necessary to have that on if not wanted especially if wanting to chat in middle of night and don't want that sound on which could wake up anyone nearby especially if have a baby sleeping in same room if you know what I'm meaning if the partner is out or working and you want to message them without waking the your baby, please put a internal sound toggle to turn messaging sound off if not wanting it on please. And also would be nice to be able to edit sent messages too no matter how long they have been sent for and this would improve the app quite a bit and would improve the stars that I've put too UpTo possibly 4or 5 stars
Great app… but increase group size!. Great app but PLEASE increase group size. Most large crypto, finance, etc groups are AT LEAST a few thousand members. Having a group limit of 1,000 is just too small. Please consider allowing up to 10,000 members!! I guarantee whatsapp and telegram will be stressing big time. Also, we need more admin tools. It’s small things like these that would transition people over from Telegram and Whatsapp to Signal!
Signal is in decline, non existent service & constant issues. Attention Signal management…you need to start reading reviews & address ALL the multitude of issues. Your now leaving your company wide open for others to develop a better App. Here are a few issues; Verifications requirements come through constantly, can’t transfer data to a new phone, can’t back up data, customer service only sends useless automated responses, no phone number to resolve issues efficiently, doesn’t keep all your recent contacts up the top of contact list, can’t send same text to more than 5 people at once! Need I go on…..extremely disappointing.
Good App, But need improvement. Overall, it’s a good app, but need some improvements like, - when I pick an incoming video call, I don’t see any option to choose audio mode, e.g If phone is connected with Bluetooth, I can’t change to speaker. There is no button at all for incoming calls to change audio mode. - In video call, I can’t enlarge my portrait video. - Audio quality and intensity are bit low than other competitors. However, Video quality is awesome. Above three issue I have observed which needs an attention.
A great app that fully functional yet secure. I moved to Signal from WhatsApp when Facebook was looking to harvest contacts from WhatsApp users. Signal was a bit clunky then but the team has worked hard and I now am fully happy with it. It never breaks and billionaires aren’t involved. Given that security forces recommend that their members use it gives me even more confidence.
Question and feedback. I would prefer to contact the developer but their support has no contact form or email address so : : - I cannot send video files of larger than 250MB but smaller than the 300MB limit. Are you able to assist? -feedback: many friends and colleagues have embraced Signal due to recent disenchantment with WhatsApp . We are in Australia and many of us are getting frustrated with delays in receiving messages sometimes several hours after being sent. The video sending function is also very limited and many are returning to WhatsApp for this purpose.
The only messenger I trust. While other E2E encrypted messengers exist, many still invade your privacy in other ways, such as raiding your contact list and building profiles on you. Signal is the original E2E messenger by Open Whisper Systems—inventor of the Signal Protocol (used by WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, amongst others). It is open source and development is not funded by your data, but by charity. If you’re using a third party messenger, switch to Signal and encourage your friends to do so as well. All the bells and whistles on other messengers aren’t worth your privacy.
message and call delivery is still problematic. Have been using signal since really early days. It is still somewhat problematic with the delivery of messages and calls. Most of the time when I call someone on signal it shows as connecting but the other person doesn’t receive the call. It also doesn’t integrate well with carplay while driving (i.e. i cannot make or receive signal call on carplay). Hope the devs get onto these issues as it’s been there for lot of time.
Signal accessibility needs more work. I’m posting this review in the hopes the developer’s will read it and act on my recommendations. Firstly I do like Signal however as an iPhone user who uses Voiceover to interact with the iPhone, a lot of us have emailed the developer’s asking that a very serious bug gets addressed and so far the developer’s haven’t considered our feedback. The bug is when using Voiceover with signal and you tap and flick up to lock the record button, all Voiceover output stops and you can’t then locate the send button to send your voice message. I have no idea why the developer’s thought that stopping all audio while recording was a great idea. It’s terrible and frustrating for many of us who use Voiceover. I emailed the developer’s along with many other Voiceover user’s and so far no joy from the Developer’s. How about taking our feedback onboard and fixing this really serious bug. Thanks in advance.
Drains battery very fast!. While the signal app good for security is TERRIBLE for battery life. Even on the latest iPhone 14 pro, with very minimal Signal usage it easily averages over 10% of all battery usage - and 75% of all app background battery usage. The app either wakes up or polls in the background rather than simply sending push notifications, the docs state that if you disable background app refresh you messages and notifications can be delayed. You can send your debug logs to them but some quick research online will show it's a problem for just about everyone. Yes it's a free app, but I'd pay to have a native macOS / Linux app and to have the battery drain fixed. - Battery life 2/10 - Security 8/10 (shouldn't need to bind to a phone number!) - Easy if use 9/10 - UI/UX 5/10 - Desktop app 2/10 (it's Electron) - Price 10/10
Security. Is it really? Then why am i here?. Whats appening y’all. I was with another private messaging app that offered the same security as Signal and there is now apparently, accusations of them who did sell out to the highest bidder, have dropped their guard to set off a security alert, or so i was warned. Thats why i am here.. 3 separate times in the last few months friends have asked me to get Signal PM app, to which i replied “no way ! i use the most secure PM app there is”lets hope i haven’t made the same error.
Time to change ones mindset. For way way too long we’ve allowed ourselves into thinking that the Big G and FB were the be all but since I’ve changed to SIGNAL and DuckDuckGo I feel I’m playing my part in saying enough is enough. Cyber security is everything and I’m personally fed up up with Big Tech making money off us all to only then use it to suppress us No More
Solid, secure, and now a far more polished instant messenger. Signal has always been a reliable messenger, and is regularly updated with big fixes, performance improvements and tweaks. It’s most recent update has given it a massive yet subtle facelift that now has the look and feel of a modern app, a great improvement over the previously dated (although functional and consistent) interface. 3D Touch shortcuts scattered about, a wide range of attachment options, and rock solid security make for a complete feeling messenger. Always been able to recommend this app to those that want secure messaging, and with its new look it fits more in on any iPhone than ever!
Functional, with room for improvement. So far it’s been a bumpy ride for Signal, but it’s to be expected with the sudden rise in traffic. I believe that the Company is headed in the right direction, in terms of privacy and secure communications. Having said this, there is still room for improvement, especially when it comes to secure message history backups, communication speed, and cross platform synchronisation. I believe that as the platform gains more users and better funding, it will address all these little issues. I also hope that they will stay true to their mission of privacy and security.
Good app except for groups…. …. it’s disappointing that they’ve never offered an option for; a) new group members to be able to see historical content b) Group chats to be backed-up or exported. I understand the technical reasons for this - but that’s no excuse. If the group moderator wants these feature and the implication is that the data needs to saved centrally - then so long as the implications are transparent to group members, that’s fine. It’s simply not useful for many groups as it currently stands. If you only need it for 1 on 1 or small friend groups whose members don’t grow over time - it’s great.
Annoying notifications NEVER end.. Signal uses dark patterns to annoy you with notifications that will never stop. Every pop-up notification gives you two options ‘Not Now’ or ‘Allow’… if you select ‘Not Now’ another pop-up notification appears to tell you that it will remind you later, and this NEVER ends. These annoying notifications NEVER stop and you cannot turn them off because Signal uses these dark patterns in its design. Its so annoying, these constant pop-up notifications reminding me to do things I do not want to do. I am strongly thinking of abandoning Signal. WhatsApp never used annoying dark patterns like this.
The basics are just right. I don’t want it to be super fancy and colourful, I just want it to be functional. I don’t want to be constantly engaged by marketing. I don’t want scammers contacting me. Thankfully, Signal has not crossed those boundaries. They have delivered a functional app that does what I need it to do well. That said, there is one point list for telling anyone who has my phone number in their contacts that I’m on Signal. I don’t want to see most of my contacts again. They are only contacts so I can screen and block them. I do wish signal would let me opt out of being visible to anyone.
Drama queen. I’m leaving this review in response to that other review RE: the recent implementation of a PIN. It could have been explained a bit better to users but it has a valid use. It’s so nobody can SIM swap you to steal your message history and potentially sensitive data which could potentially happen to at-risk people like journalists and whistleblowers. Signal has a very good track record with being zero knowledge and being unable to provide user data to authorities when requested, and they’re continuing to uphold that with new features. So it’s literally fine.
Better before the update!. I have no idea why but since the August 2018 update this app doesn’t work as well as it did before. My friend constantly says “I didn’t get your message” (through normal messaging). It’s stalls here and there - screen freezes after writing a message and hitting send.... not always It might look better and have a few better visual features but personally think it was better before
What happened?. This app used to be the best, especially after Zuckerberg made the infamous “error” with his WhatsApp terms and conditions and everyone was scrambling to find an alternative. It’s still okay for text messaging but in the latest version something has gone very wrong with the phone calls. Incoming calls only ring when the app is not running, otherwise I just get a “missed call” message. Whenever I answer an incoming call the screen says “connecting” for about 15 seconds then disconnects. I’m not the only person this is happening to either. Signal themselves are no help - I emailed them with the log data and their response was basically “can you please include the log data with your complaint?” This all started after the latest update. I’m on the point of giving up.
Great but notifications don’t seem to work. Multiple friends have problems under iPhone 6-7 receiving notifications that we have a Signal message (despite having them turned on in Settings). Would be even better app if this could be addressed so we’re shown on locked screen when there’s an unread message as other message apps do. Also takes a little longer to load messages than other message apps, which is a pity for users who are in the habit of double clicking to see latest viewed message in the preview generated from double clicking.
Gui improvement. No doubt in case of privacy signal is excellent but there are certain glitches like contacts available on signal cannot be seen. By clicking user profile it’s getting to contact page which is not a good sign. Even accessing photo from gallery is getting some error. I can’t view someone’s profile pic nor even last seen is available. I hope you fix this issues and come up with better gui .
The best instant Messenger!! EVER!!!!. I’m just blown away by how awesome this app is! It comes with a few sticks and built in integration with Giphy!! I love Giphy! Can share GIF right from the app and not go to my web browser on a separate app to copy and paste a URL into the app! :) Plus the app is heavily secure for instant communication! Even recommended by Edward Josef Snowden! This level of heavy emphasis on security is welcomed largely. My only complaint is that the app could come with more stickers preloaded in the app or have a sticker store built right in to the app. All in all, I feel much secure using this app! Thank you all, the Developers, Donators & Everyone Who has contributed to this app! My best wishes to all of you! I’m optimistic for future, I want to see what else signal development team brings to the table. 😃😃😃
Love this app. It is actually incredibly that signal can provide a great functioning messaging and calling app which doesn’t sell my data at all FOR FREE! It is also great how I can message my friends from my laptop through the desktop app and call them from there aswell. I also love how it doesn’t have much features which makes it easy to use. Also the apps which have the most features tend to be the glitchiest, which is not this app. Truly recommend 10/10 could not ask for a better messaging service.
A few things. Nice app but seems very opinionated when forcing certain features. Would love to see the following: * Do not remind me to turn on notifications if I already said no. Same with verifying my PIN. * Allow me to sign up with an email address instead of a phone number and disconnect the phone entirely from the program. * Make is so I can use the macOS desktop app without connectivity to my phone. Would rather not take Signal everywhere with me.
Great app with room to improve. I love using Signal! It has all the features of a great messaging app. I enjoyed it better before the recent updates though. The new feature that auto allows the most recent chat to pop up even whilst I am half-way replying to another chat has been pretty distracting and annoying. I think the app could be improved if there was a way to disable this function so the user can decide if they want to use it or not. Apart from that, Signal has been AMAZING! I have been getting friends/family to jump onto this platform for communications. Keep up the awesome work Signal Developers and thank you for this app! 😊
New version Signal and iOS 12.5.5 just keeps on quitting. Boring!. Previous version signal worked just fine. The new one just quits after few seconds each time. More useless updates from Apple that make life worse and more intermittent.. 12.5.5...? All this stuff actually seemed to work a lot better years ago!? I had more success with iOS 6. What the heck happened? The spell check has become a nightmare! It's become an obstacle to even type on this thing now.

Get a new phone and lose everything.. Took my iPhone over to apple and traded it in for a new one. So long Signal data. There is no option to sign in and continue on your new device unless you KEEP your old phone. I don’t even know how to get added back to my groups. Disappointed.
Awesome app. Great app, privacy focused and non-profit. I donated myself
No privacy. It told all my contacts that I joined their app. Where is the privacy??? Deleting it immediately and will not be using it again.
Say hello to privacy???. First thing the make you do, is GIVE UP YOUR PRIVACY by having to accept 3 thing which on iPhone 2 are blank buttons and mentions something about contacts. Reading about repeated complaints on the reviews after, to try and decider what the 2 blank buttons of the 3 you’re giving permission to, I see numerous complaints for the past 3 years of the permission to contacts used as a platform to spam any person on your contacts ADVERTIZING that you’re on this app. That to me is a HUGE breach of my privacy as I do not want to have EVERYONE on my contacts in my phone to know for a fact that that can reach me in this. I prefer to use it for a selected few, but unfortunately as many others have complaint, there’s no switch to opt out of this clear breach of trust and use of the granted privacy access to your very personal contact. And with that, this app will be deleted as fast as it was download. Implement an option or simply, don’t abuse the granted permission as you have clearly been doing for years now. Say hello to Privacy?? I think not!!! Not with Signal, that’s for certain! I dare the developers, to give the option to users to have contacts be informed or NOT informed that he or she is on this app. I DOUBLE DARE THEM. If the users privacy was important at all, they would have made a switch to turn it on or off. Is that simple. Cannot give it more than a 1 Star rating, as I am not willing to go further to try it, and if a user can’t go past their comfort to use something, they will hardly have anything positive to say about that something and rate better. Let’s see if developer cares abut privacy and accept the double dare.
Why notify everyone if it’s for privacy?. Once you join everyone and anyone who has ever had you in their contact list gets notification with your name on it! How is this private?!
Goodbye WhatsApp!. In light of the recent power-grab by big tech, I was extremely pleased to find a safe, secure, free application to replace WhatsApp. Feels like a breath of fresh air being able to communicate with friends and family without big-tech trying to harvest all my data. Goodbye WhatsApp once and for all!
Crypto? Really?. Uninstalled. Hope devs will consider an alternative to crypto-assets.
The Best Privacy Focused Messaging App.. But it’s much more than just privacy, you can use Signal for group chats and private calls too. I highly recommend this app as it has been a stellar experience for me. All the benefits of modern communications with the knowledge your conversations will remain unseen by the thousands of bad actors looking to sell your information!
Excellent texting app. Very good app for texting. Improved lately. Try it, you won't be disapointed.
Watch app!!. It’s a really good app but it badly needs a watch app.
Thank you. Nice to see a developer that cares as much about my privacy as I do
Great App.. Hello Signal and goodbye WhatsApp. It does everything I need from messaging App + privacy I want 👍🏾.
Portrait mode only and no cancel from another app?. Glad to see it finally arrived to iPad. However... …The keyboard will only display when in portrait mode, I’m 99.8% landscape, and if I share from an app, portrait mode a must again & there is no cancel option…other than closing the app and relaunch and get back to the place prior to closing. Example, from Flipboard, email, etc. Had issues at first with connecting to my phone, 3 attempts to get the phone to display the iPad in settings. Thanks though.
Why Signal is Superior. Not exploiting their users for profit while having all the features of WhatsApp.
Don’t appreciate the app announcing that I’m on signal. I don’t appreciate how this app combs through my contacts and sends me a messages for EVERY one of my contacts that uses signal saying “Jane Smith is also on Signal”. I especially don’t appreciate this privacy geared app sending people I know / whose contacts I am in, that I use Signal either. You should be upfront about this when you ask for permission to access contacts. I assumed I was granting permission to access my contacts from you app, not for you to broadcast that I’m using it or spamming me.
Your contacts know your in Signal. If I can see my contacts on signal anyone on signal can see. How is that private? Guess it’s meant as a signal to everyone not to use this app if you want privacy. I can’t rate it any lower or I would.
The only downside…. Is that it requires a phone number. Everything else about Signal makes it superior to every other messaging service in almost every scenario. What they’ve built is nothing short of the impressive. 5 stars, and 9 thumbs up.
Lost my history!. I changed my phone. Just a warranty thing, exactly the same model restored exactly from backup. But Signal made me do set up again and no longer has any of my history. Due to my phone replacement? That's terrible!
Calls showing on Bill. Hi, how is it that calls made with the app on wifi, are showing up on provider bill?
Best messaging service. Fully end to end encrypted, open source, and very easy to setup. Interface is very familiar and user friendly.
Help. I rely on this app to talk to my mom. I am only getting messages if I open the app. Please help. Notifications on. I can’t use signal anymore until fixed. Its my favourite now I have to use WhatsApp. And I don’t like it. I have a disability where i need to talk to someone and them to tell me what to do. So long till ya fix it
Privacy?. Privacy when I need to link my contacts and my phone? Nah.
Notifications. It’s a great app but I have a major issue with push notifications...I have not been able to get them to work. I’m only notified when I open the app. I request push n. constantly but nothing still.
Cannot receive notification. No messages pop-up notification without opening the app, but it’s good that overall functions are similar to whatsapp
Empowering Privacy and Secure Communication. The Signal app has revolutionized the way we communicate, putting privacy and security at the forefront without compromising on functionality. As someone who values my privacy and seeks secure communication channels, Signal has quickly become my go-to messaging app. One of the standout features of Signal is its commitment to end-to-end encryption. Every message, voice call, and video call is secured with robust encryption, ensuring that only the intended recipient can access the content. This level of privacy and security gives me peace of mind, knowing that my conversations are shielded from prying eyes. The app’s user interface is clean, intuitive, and easy to navigate. Setting up the app and managing contacts is a breeze, and the overall user experience is smooth and efficient. Signal offers all the essential features one would expect from a messaging app, including group chats, file sharing, and voice and video calls, making it a versatile communication tool. Signal’s dedication to privacy⬤
The only PvtMsngr you will ever need. Use ANY phone number with Signal? Check. Tightest encryption in the world when it comes to messaging? Check. Full control, disappearing messages, lockout, and no account needed! Signal rules all.
Notifications aren’t working. This is the third time this has happened where I get no notifications have to open the app to see who is calling or messaging. It’s been two weeks and none of the updates have addressed this.
Forces you to allow contacts. They’ve removed the option to decline syncing contacts or to skip that screen. No thanks. Deleted.
Pls help to transfer data/messages. Just switched to a new iPhone, spent hours to transfer old messages over from the old iPhone. Poor instruction n still not working. There’s no transfer data function!
Great app!. Great app as a secure alternative to Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp.
NO ALERTS. Whenever someone sends me a message I don’t get the alert even though there is messages waiting for me it shows blank that there’s nothing the only way I can find out is if I log on myself and then I can find out these messages waiting for me you need to fix this. When someone says me a message it doesn’t give me a notification or an alert and it doesn’t show on the app that there are messages waiting for me on there it’s just blank you need to correct this because I’m missing a lot of messages and the only way I can retrieve them is if I happen to log onto the app
Messes up incoming call displays. I use an iPhone~ It’s been a few times when local incoming calls were mis-displayed as an incoming audio call on signal... I normally ignore incoming calls that are from unknown numbers, but with it displaying that it’s a signal audio call from my contact, I picked it up...(it turned out to be a spam local incoming call) is there any way to fix that?
PSA for privacy minded folks :. Signal is no longer open source. This makes it no different than any of the other messaging apps. Time to move on, they don’t truly care about privacy anymore
Great app & customer service. This app has been great around privacy settings, and if I ever have a question, the customer service is prompt and very professional. Highly recommend.
Indispensable. Our family is far flung, in different time zones, some in situations requiring encrypted communication. We use Signal multiple times daily in groups and individually, by text, audio and video calls. Losing the use of Signal would create a huge gap in our lives. If we had to design a replacement it would be a direct copy of Signal, feature for feature, no changes!
Love Signal!. I’ve been using Signal for a couple of years now. My best friend and I use it multiple times a day to send voice messsges to each other and my daughter and I love it for chatting back & forth as well. The Signal App makes communication simple and fun. I also like that Signal is not associated with Meta which is what drew me to this App in the first place.
Improve video quality. Compresses videos to very bad quality. Video quality should be as good as iMessage or telegram. Also, desktop app supports HDR but the mobile app doesn’t.
Worst app ever!. Wont pop up notification until you open the app, but when the massive message popped out it shuts the app.
Choose Signal over everything else. Signal is the #1 app to use for your communications. If you don’t care about privacy and security I won’t try to convince you in this review. But I will say that I would choose this over WhatsApp every time. What’s app might have more business features but outside of that they offer most of the same, except I find the signal’s user experience much more intuitive and enjoyable. And signal is an open source not for profit project that I think is amazing.
Uninstalling. The app tells your contacts that you’re using Signal. Ridiculous.
Not happy.... As someone who is security minded I was extremely disappointed to see that upon accessing my contacts Signal advertised me to everyone else who had the app. No way to shut that off in any preference setting. Can you say Privacy breach? Ridiculous.
Reliably private & secure. It’s comforting, in this age of mass corporate and gov’t surveillance, to have an app that is open source and well reviewed as a secure, encrypted messaging service. I’ve got nothing to hide, but I still don’t want Big Tech harvesting my data.
Secure and Reliable. I first began using Signal as my go to communication platform during the Freedom Convoy in Canada. I was there for 5 weeks. The military and the RCMP had Dark Grey Suburbans fitted with more antennas than I could count. I was communicating with my colleagues and sending documents and images in real time using text messaging and to our horror our documents never made it to them including the real-time images and video we were sending to each other so we could have situational awareness. We quickly switched to Signal and it saved the day. We didn’t have a single item we sent intercepted by our corrupt military and RCMP. They were trying to jam our phones but Signal was our dependable and reliable platform. Absolutely amazing!!!
Disappointing. It’s very disappointing to see another app getting into cryptocurrencies.
inaccessible. will lose access to the app forever in 10 days because my iOS version is too old for Signal.
STOP BROADCASTING THAT SOMEONE IS ON SIGNAL. Stop using the excuse that it is more pervasive this way! I don’t want people I’ve never spoken to in years to get notified that I’ve just installed signal! What about the right to be forgotten? Not everybody has a random number they can use to create accounts. This has been the number one complaint for years! DO SOMETHING
Recording. Mic and camera are switched on when you’re sending a picture/sharing a file
Re. Why do I have to give you access to my contacts in order to send a message ? I am fully capable of punching in someone’s contact info why do you need all my contacts. Is there a way to send a message without having you access all my contacts.
Signing in. Okay srsly why cant we sign in with our email address????? Um yea soooooo could we add the option
Asks for Contacts Permission Constantly. The app is pretty good, but it will constantly request access to your contacts. Declining is met with a message saying “we’ll remind you again soon”. An app marketing itself for privacy should understand that denial of permissions is something the users may want to do.

Select Signal for your Safety and Security. The last thing we need, is another app selling our personal information to third parties like Facebook enjoys. I've closed my Facebook and will remove my WhatsApp account before uninstalling, in order to not leave any info behind. Social media has become public poison. “For your own sakes, quit trusting in mere man.” —Isaiah 2:22 I trust in the God in the Bible, his name is Jehovah and he selected his only begotten Son Christ to restore what we lost when Adam rebelled. This app was chosen to help God's children stay safe. I send my thanks to the developers of this app. Thank you for allowing us to enjoy a private conversation again with our brothers and sisters around the world. God bless your app development team. 🙏💜
Privacy is of the upmost importance!!. I do not like the idea of my conversations not being private, at all! I was using WhatsApp until Facebook bought them. Its now uninstalled. I’ve switched to Apple phone and computer and uninstalled Google everything, I don’t use Waze anymore either and I loved that app. I use Duck Duck Go as my search engine. Facebook and Google have more information about me that I can bare. This is one more way I can take back a small part of really having privacy. Please don’t sell out like everyone seems to do. I’ll donate just to keep this app owned by people who are not spying on me, selling my personal information and forming algorithms to learn who I am without my permission or knowledge. Thank you. 😊
The best messaging app I've used. Signal is just AMAZING! Privacy eccentric, dark mode, no lame video statuses, just what it's supposed to do Messaging. It has useful features like dark mode, disabling the typing indicator, disabling notifications doesn't prompt you to enable them back again. For privacy focused people like myself I do not require chat backups so that I can dwell on the conversations I've shared with people and keep them forever happily ever after, I'd happily pass that opportunity. In a future update I'd like to request for a smaller Unanswered Outgoing call 'bubble' in my chat history, as it takes tooo much space. A HUGE shoutout to Open Whisper Systems for creating an application like this. Thank you very much!
Love love love love it!!!!. By far the best calling and texting all ever. Whenever I can’t hear someone on my regular phone due to static or bad connection we go to signal and the connection is flawless. Can hear them clearly and loud. I also love the fact that I’m in control of who gets what messages for how long. You have the last day so on who gets to keep your conversations. Making it really private private. I also I’m thrilled with the fact that they are not interested in saving anything on the cloud so whatever u delete is really lost for ever. No way for someone to blackmail u with nothing. The ease of access and user friendliness is also above and beyond expectations. I highly recommend this app to everyone wanting to keep things private and secure.
Warnings/options needed for joining signal notifications (for user safety). I really like Signal. It’s just pretty awful that it notifies people in your phone contacts that you’ve made an account and there didn’t seem to be an explicit opt out at account setup. I forgot I had the phone number of a man who sexually assaulted me, (didn’t realize signal would notify everyone) and it was terrifying when Signal still allowed him to send me messages even after I deleted him from my contacts shortly after creating my account. It would be great if there was a way (or at least an easy way for dumb folks like me :P) to opt out of letting Signal notify folks in your contacts that a you created an account. The bare minimum would be to have an explicit and accessible (no legal jargon that you need college level English comprehension for) warning that Signal will notify people in your contacts on account creation. That would have been better than nothing.
Strained systems. There was a mass exodus from WhatsApp early 2021 and it put a strain on signal. It’s actually labeled the largest migration in tech history. That being said that app is much improved disincentive then. However it still has issues. Poor connectivity and strange app bugs. I notice that sometimes when I hit the close button on my iPhone it’ll disconnect the call for some reason. That is obviously annoying. I’ve filed a bug report and only got an automated response. I will continue to use signal. Knowing it will only improve. Update: lately the app has been doing a weird thing where the messages don’t come in until I open the app and send a message to that person. Then a bunch of their messages come in at the same time.
Security and privacy. This app is excellent in terms of offering the best options and services other top-rating apps offer. The only reason why I cannot give 5 stars is that it keeps updating on a weekly basis! I do understand and respect the attempts the developers make to keep the end-to-end encryption and security updated and impenetrable, but is it really necessary to update the app for some mere stickers and unimportant stuff?! Anyone in need of these shenanigans can go find them in any other app! Initially I thought the updates are security-related but once you click on the “more” option, you realise it’s not that crucial. Then again, I have tried ignoring the redundant updates and well: the app’s functionality goes down. Please think about this before you want to download it.
Solid.. Been using Signal for years and I’m consistently pleased with the quality of this app, its robust and evolving features, and (most importantly) its solid security. One minor issue I have may be an iOS-related thing (but I’m not sure). While I’ve been able to securely send myself files via Note to Self, not all files are downloadable. I can download pics, gifs, videos, and sound –but, for whatever reason, I can’t download .ods, .psafe3, or other [obscure] non-media file formats which can be imported into iOS apps on my phone. While this isn’t a deal-breaker for me, it does make securely moving files from one device to another very problematic. Signal is still my go-to app for secure messaging and will be for years to come.
Not bad, not bad at all. Switched over from using aMessenger, and I like it so far. I do have a few concerns, though: it’d be nice to be able to have custom wallpapers, etc. for individual chats (or they do, and I haven’t noticed). Also a nickname system similar to Messenger for both Group and individual chats. Also having the ability to add sticker packs is another thing. Maybe more sticker creators can be added in the future? The nickname for a friend was changed to their actual name without notice, at first while in the chat, then outside of it as well. Also, it would be nice to assign nicknames for you to see only on your side, and it be applied when seeing the chat from the dashboard and being in a chat. Overall, though, I love it - secure, easy, simple, can’t complain about anything else. Thank you for making this app! 😊
New User!!!. Read an article today about signal and wanted to see what the hype was about. It’s almost like the WhatsApp platform. What I would like to see already is the option to change the chat wallpaper, and more options with stickers. I do enjoy customizing my chat and changing things around. My husband and I use this app and trying it out but more options would be nice. For now I am giving this app a three star for what I am currently seeing within the app, maybe when I see updates and more improvements I will come back here and provide another review. Oh before I forget I do like that the messages are encrypted and privacy does play a big part for me and my family and friends. But let’s just hope the developers will see this review and come up with some brilliant ideas to make this app #1 .... I’m looking forward to this journey.
A Great Messaging App (That Also Keeps Them Private). My friends and I switched to Signal about a year and a half ago. The main reason: pictures and video. Text messages would heavily compress all of the images we would try to send, and any GIFs or Videos we would send to each other would suffer a similar fate. So eventually, we decided to try this messaging app. And after this long, I can firmly state that it’s one of the best messaging apps that I’ve ever used. WhatsApp was out of the running when we wanted to switch away from texting, as was Discord. Neither has the strong security with encryption that Signal demonstrated. Signal proved to be the perfect messaging app for us. And since we send so many message and images (and we don’t want to keep them all) Signal provides the great feature to keep storage space free, and keep our group chat uncluttered. Just a few quality-of-life improvements would make this a superb messaging app, such as multi-image or video sending. The current process is arduous with a “one image at a time” approach. Other than that, there really isn’t much to complain about. It works, and it works well.
Not Ready for Prime Time Yet. This supposed encrypted messaging is similar to all the other messaging apps. But many developers like all browsers don’t recognize it and often does not put the links and photos directly into Signal. Work arounds are easy to do. I often have to cut and paste into my mail app and then cut and paste into Signal. A bit painful at times. Often I find myself just going back to using Apple’s messenger. I trust Apple more than other texting apps. I used to trust WhatsApp but not as much anymore as it is a Facebook app. It too is supposed to be encrypted. Most people around the world use WhatsApp or Apple Messenger. But in reality if you are really worrying about total privacy, stay in a cave and never use any electronics. Or develop a private encryption that requires special changing coding -decoding books. All in all, its fun seeing old friends appear on Signal as it gains popularity.
Privacy violators. Such promising functionality and features BUT, alas, I only downloaded this app for security and privacy reasons - only to discover the atypical demand this app makes that I SHARE MY CONTACTS! That's a hard pass...I will delete this app asap. If I wanted this level of non-privacy, I would have downloaded another disrespecter of privacy like What's App. Boundaries, please! I have a hard time believing I am an anomoly in expecting a security and privacy oriented app to actually respect privacy (of my contacts in this case). Arrrgh! *Reference point for those still considering the merits of this app: after you download Signal app, the app forces you to "choose" to allow it full access to all your contacts. Note the dubious term, "choose," since you are truly given NO CHOICE. You either must allow this or not access use of the app. **Addendum: I have this app opportunity to prove worthy of privacy standards: I explored/researched ways to bypass sharing my contacts. I searched via Google search and via Signal's own website. Per indo posted by Signal they DO force you to share your contacts. And no, not all phone or messaging apps do. Google Voice is just one example of communication apps that don't force you to reveal/share your contacts in order to use the app. Poorly done, Signal. Privacy violations is a real deal breaker for me!
Our trusted communication platform. Signal is what our family uses for all of its instant communications. Might not be as full featured as something like Keybase, but is a heck of a lot easier to use - easy enough for me to foist on my mother (at the same time, she's more tech savvy than 99% of grandmothers). We went with Signal because of the numerous third party recommendations as to the strength of its end-to-end encryption. Been using it for years now - it has been solid and does exactly what we need. Sure, some things like desktop integration could be better, but using it on the phone is the most common use case, and it works perfectly for that.
Need to change up date profile notifications. Hi! Would like to make a suggestion. Please fix so you can’t see who changed what on their settings/profile, It is very annoying to see this pop up and notify a group or even an individual, too much notifications. I think it’s not necessary to know about every contact who changes what, to much notifications especially on group chats. This seems to be the biggest concern / annoying for most that I know of from my contacts . And why doesn’t the picture profile of a contact zoom in or once click on it it doesn’t become enlarged? Very new to this app so far I see this the most annoying. Will give more stars once I figure it out more about this app. Especially if you change the profile update notifications for all.
Signal is missing an opportunity. Our family chat groups moved from WhatsApp to Signal after all the hullabaloo about Facebook abuse of privacy. I might guess that our group wasn’t the only ones looking for an alternative to FB-owned group chat. We’re still using Signal, but we’re surprised at some basic flaws. You can only share one pic at a time, videos and pics won’t turn to landscape when you rotate your device. And now with a recent update they’ve added extra steps to see who has viewed your posts/responses. I’d think that Signal would do everything they could to match and exceed the features and ease-of-use of WhatsApp, but if they are, they’re being extremely slow to do it. As I said, our family groups are still using it, but not enjoying it as much and as a result our rate of interaction has dropped by a fair amount.
Almost 5 stars. I love everything about Signal EXCEPT the fact you can't remove people from a group chat. My business colleagues and I use Signal mainly for business so when someone is no longer a part of a specific project we're unable to simply remove them from the group chat. You have to create an entirely new chat and add everyone back which is a very annoying process. Another thing is when someone calls me from Signal, it doesn't show me whose calling unless I specifically have the Signal app open and am on Signal at the moment. I'm not sure if that varies depending on what type of phone someone is using or not but I have an iPhone 6. It would be nice to address that as well if possible.
Nothing Compares. Signal is THE app to have if you have privacy concerns, just want to be able to talk with friends without the concern that a third party is collecting all information they deem “useful” on you. I know a lot of people may still have the room for a little doubt, as they think it’s likely no app is perfect. But considering the person that recommended Signal to me? Yeah, that’s a great source and referral for your app… the best, really: an intensely private CFO of a very big cybersecurity app - not saying what country it’s in, but not the US. That was an endorsement from someone who knows this world inside and out. They dropped WhatsApp in 2019 ever since Meta acquired it and never looked back (and now, I won’t either!).
Best balance of privacy/security and usability. I’ve worked in or with telecommunications and network engineering for over 40 years. I’m always on the lookout for whatever is the most safe, secure and private methods of doing everything. Although there are few platforms that are more private and secure, none of them are as full featured and yet easy to use as Signal. I am really impressed with Simplex Chat for privacy and anonymity but it is just a little more confusing for many end users. But for trying to get the most friends and family that I know to move to something safe and secure, Signal has been the best balance.
Great “Stay in Touch” App. We’ve been needing to split our time between a couple of continents to care for family members. Texting was often tricky, expensive, or utterly failed. Signal has solved all of that. It’s reliable, works every where and has all of the features we need. Text, audio, and video calls all work very well; video quality was as high or higher than FaceTime. Plus it’s very secure and has NONE of the Facebook shenanigans of collecting and distributing your data. The only thing I found tricky at first was adding pictures. Going into pictures first, selecting the ones I want to send, then uploading them to Signal works great.
Perfect for sharing things with my buds. I LOVE the file sharing, it gives iPhone users more versatility and it means I can share lots of neat things with my group. The ONLY thing I feel is missing is the ability to make polls. It would be awesome if the polls could have their own “tab” on the chat too, so they don’t get lost in the messages like in other apps. Being able to “open” and “close” polls and limit the amount of answers would be helpful as well. Also making it so that whoever makes the poll is the only one (besides admins) who can change or add new answer options. I love this app and will be using this over things like Facebook messenger from here on out. GREAT JOB!!!!
The *Only* Way To Message!. Absolutely love this app. Acclimating to it from iMessage user’s is very simple. As it’s interface is very straight-to. Love the encryption and decryption offered, not that I necessarily need it (being a normal, boring guy), but it is very secure to anyone that may. Like iMessage, you can sync your phone on your computer with the (free) application offered for Mac/PC to send messages at your workspace, without having your phone on you (and once again, the program is very user-friendly). I would recommend Signal to anyone looking for a secure, efficient way to send encrypted texts ~ It’s replaced the iMessage slot on my phone ~ go ahead and give it a try, you’ll never want to switch back 😉
Privacy is no longer a geek’s game. A simple, open-source, cross-platform, feature-replete messaging app with good security practices... I used to think this was an impossibility. I’m glad it’s not. I’ve convinced a few friends and family members to try it and they like it as well since it’s stable and works well without requiring complex setup and maintenance like handling (and learning how to properly use and secure) PGP keys. Furthermore, the audio/video call quality is fantastic! I couldn’t believe how crisp and clear the audio was when communicating with loved ones overseas using poor to standard Internet connections. Truly phenomenal. My 2 complaints (hence 4 instead of 5 stars) at the moment are: 1) No native iPad support. It’s the one mainstream device I and others own that I’m aware of without native support for Signal. 2) No native sticker support. Yes, this is a superfluous feature for a privacy/security-oriented messaging application, but I think it should be a priority for implementation. More fun features—like rich links and GIFs which are already supported in Signal—would help entice adopters. iMessage is fun to use because of support for extras like stickers, effects, and other rich media that add extra dimensions to conversations.
absolutely horrible customer service and app backup. signal’s unwillingness to allow for backups and connecting a tablet is only worsened by customer service that cost me my entire history of messages and documents due to wrong advice. their unresponsive customer service was combative and wrong about how to set up a new device without losing old messages. as a result, i lost EVERYTHING. 8 years worth of incredibly valuable data, documents, media and messages. i am involved in projects that support injured veterans, non profits, i am still in the military and i lost everything. there will be veterans now who will suffer physically, likely for the rest of their lives, because of Signal’s irresponsible tech support. i am disgusted by this service and would recommend literally any other messaging app, even if it is less secure, to save yourself from losing everything.
Worth the Download 10x Over. It’s very worth taking every conversation you have over to Signal. These big social media apps are doing everything they can to remove user privacy from the situation. It’s important we recognize that and do everything we can to support those making sure privacy remains an unalienable right. Signal is a phenomenal app beyond its end-to-end encryption benefit. Even if you are just chatting about skittles and what your favorite cereal is, I think it’s vital to not send another word through these big tech companies. Just use signal, if you need anymore reassurance, take a look at all the new terms and agreements social media apps are taking this year 🥴
Way better than WhatsApp!. The only reason I switch to Signal is because I wasn’t going along with WhatsApp’s new “privacy policy”,I love that signal respect people’s privacy👍🏼But it could use some improvements I have now been using Signal for a couple years I love it in my opinion everyone should switch from WhatsApp to Signal they actually care about privacy. I did have some pretty bad problems with bugs but they keep on making updates so they keep on getting better I have now been using Signal for a couple years I love it in my opinion everyone should switch from WhatsApp to Signal they actually care about privacy. So close, but needs some improvements. I was very happy to find an app with encryptions and not owned by Facebook. Unfortunately it does not reliably send/receive messages. Daily, I will get a message saying it was just delivered but when I open the app, it was sent 20mins, 1hr, 2hrs before. Often I won’t get messages from hours ago until I send one out. I’d also like to see the contact name on the screen after I’ve selected them to send an image to. Nobody wants a screenshot or photo accidentally going to the wrong person. They also need to improve the desktop app. It loads every message that hasn’t been cleared and takes a VERY long time. They also need a Chrome desktop app available. I do love that it doesn’t show online statuses...I look forward to going back to this app in the future when it’s solved a few issues.
Update Issue. I’ve had Signal since 2020 and love it. I use the voice message texting quite a bit and after the last app update I have to hold my phone just right to listen or record messages. If I tilt my phone the slightest bit then the message I’m listening to stops and I have to begin listening to the whole message again. If I’m recording a voice message and tilt my phone, it stops my message and I can either delete or send what I have or begin recording a whole new message. This leads to me listening to a voice message that was sent to me numerous times if I accidentally tilt my phone. And when I’m trying to record a message I may have to start over and over because I accidentally tilt the phone. So frustrating.
Loses voice messages and no scrubbing. Updated review: I have really tried to give this app a long-term chance but I am continuously frustrated with its lack of ability to handle voice messages. If something interrupts your message, for example, a low battery notice, you will lose the entire recording. I still experience situations where messages are lost with no explanation. It is baffling and the frequency of these events is enough for me to ditch it altogether. I do not understand how Signal is not taking this opportunity of so many people moving over from WhatsApp to improve this particular aspect of their app. Goodbye Signal. Prior review: I appreciate how secure this app is, but it loses voice messages if you don’t tap directly on the tiny “send” word (it’s not even a button). The message just disappears if you tap anywhere outside of that area. It is a complete waste of time. This overlooked problem is a dealbreaker. Also, you can’t scrub through received voice messages.
Find a better way to save chats without linking phones. Find a better way to save chat history or stop updating the app every time because whenever I update I’m forced to delete the app and have to redownload it because all functions on the app don’t work including linking accounts to save my chats. Apparently Signal shuts all functions down when they want you to force update. I have an issue where my phone simultaneously has an old deleted Apple ID that is primarily registered but cannot sign in/remove because it “doesn’t exist anymore” along with a new Apple ID that I’m using currently. So whenever I decide to update signal it tells me on the App Store that I’m “Unable to update” which makes me force delete signal and redowload again only to find out that all my ALL my chat history has been deleted. This happens everyone you guys decide to force an an update and it’s totally annoying!!! Other apps do have a better way of saving chats…
Great service, but too much “noise” in Signal. Switched from Whatapp with the Facebook policy change. Appreciate the security of Signal. However I cannot stand that every time I go to have a conversation there are all these rando contact recommendations that I have to manually swipe left to remove. No way for me to have a “home” screen with my chosen contacts or option to stop auto-suggest people! I will determine who I want to be in contact with - let me search for their names to see if they are in Signal. Super annoyed that oz have to use the search feature for people I have added and that I had 57 messages displayed which is just all these rando folks that the app finds. So when I actually DO get a message from a contact it’s lost in the noise. PLEASE FIX THIS!!!!
Don't hate the player hate the game. Nickfrikiname is very wrong! This is a great app and I've always promoted the app to my friends. He's upset because of his particular situation. What he failed to understand is, signal really does protect your privacy, from anyone and everyone. Unfortunately in this world we live in privacy seems to be very scarce and signal helps bring that back! I do wish the phone call feature was a tad bit better as far as the recipient being able to hear what I'm saying, but I totally understand that being encrypted can't be a easy task and probably very complex but at least they are trying. Recovering old messages shouldn't be an option and should stay that way no matter what. This is what the app is built around and how they promote it!
Love the app, but has a serious bug. We just moved a large group from WhatsApp to signal. Initial experience was good. But somehow, after we removed some users as admins and added others, the entire group has become read-only with respect to updates of group name, membership, and any group features. Even admins cannot update any of these. We can still send/receive messages. But members cannot leave, we cannot change admins, or change group name — all group updates are rejected. The specific error we get is “Group could not be updated” with no further details on how to resolve the issue. I suspect we triggered a bug in the protocol after we removed/added a bunch of users as admins. We were joking that now have an extremely secure group — members cannot join or leave and no changes allowed! :-) Anyway, I hope Signal gets in touch with us so that we can troubleshoot the bug and get it fixed.
Working as intended but bug in group chat. I was looking for a way to communicate securely with my group of friends from college. Signal seemed to be the better choice over Telegram so I went with them and invited over a dozen people to download it as well. Unfortunately, there seems to be an issue with the group chat functionality where I can’t add a new member to an existing group and instead have to start a new group chat every time another friend joins and wants to be in the group chat. Attempting to add someone who isn’t in the group chat results in the message “Error. User is already a group member” Please fix this bug as that would make this a great alternative to iMessage / messenger etc.”
Great but need some improvements. Since I start using Signal I realize some things that are missing and hope to see them with the coming updates, most of the time when you close the app and someone sends or calls you and your notifications are on, you cannot know until you open the app, please don’t tel me that my phone is old or my connection is poor, it should appear in your notification bar that you have a call or message, you cannot know who’s online and when your last appearance, one more important issue that must be taken into consideration seriously, while having a call the battery loses a huge amount of it in a very short time.
Allow backups. I love Signal and I went off WhatsApp (recently had to rejoin 😩) after they announced their new privacy policy some years ago, but Signal needs to improve it’s video call quality. A friend of mine who lives in Madagascar and I can’t have a video call in peace on Signal, but we can on WhatsApp. Also, PLEASE allow better syncing between devices and back ups! Now that Apple allows encrypted back ups on iCloud, Signal should allow Apple users to sync their Signal chats across devices and back their chats up to iCloud. I’m a sentimental guy and I really don’t like losing my chat history, but I don’t feel my Signal chats are as safe as my iMessage and WhatsApp chats because of the inability to backup.
There’s no way I’m using another messaging application!. At first it was a little bit hard using the application. Not because it was bad but because I was so use to all the features other messaging applications had. I stick with Signal for the privacy it provided but since the first time I downloaded they constantly update the application and add really useful features and make the app more clean and easy to use. Right now I have almost every friend and family using it because privacy it’s important and the change and features you are going to left behind over time are less and less. I really recommend the application! Plus, they actually care about your privacy.
Nooooooo, Not stories!!!. Holy cow! When I saw that Signal started including Stories, I was so extremely disappointed. I was going to have to stop using my favorite messaging app because they tried to become like stupid TikTok or SnapChat. Luckily, Signal is better than that and allows you to opt out of stories if you don’t use that feature or want that type of communication in your life. Props to you Signal, for providing options but not forcing them on everyone and alienating your original user base. Keep being classy and making a great app, but please don’t force other app styles on those of us who just want a decent secure messaging app without all the bloat of Instagram, TikTok, SnapChat, etc.
Security, but no Privacy. Better onboarding, yet still all the same problems as before. They do great security, but don’t seem to have privacy as a priority, which is weird. End to end encrypted, they keep no activity logs, this all sounds great. But you can’t use the service without giving them your actual phone number - I mean, if I wanted people to have my phone number, why would I need Signal? I’d just text them. Then they want access to all your contacts - to tell you who else is on the service, and to tell other people that you’re there. That sounds like an awful thing to me. And it also begs the question of whether I have the consent of every single person in my contacts on my phone to give out their names, phone numbers, email addresses to someone else. (Hint: I don’t.) I think they want to see Signal as some kind of social network, instead of just being a great secure communication platform. Yo, Signal: I can contact the people I want to communicate with, all by myself. I guarantee you it’s a much smaller group than the 1000 or so people in my contacts list. Please: let people sign up without giving up a phone number, and use the app without access to their address book if they want to. “Discoverability” is nice for networked printers, but many of us really don’t want to be looked up. Privacy. Just as important as security.
OK, but lacking some basic functionality. The ability to seamlessly move between desktop and mobile is top notch and invaluable. Other than that, the product leaves much to be desired in very basic functionality. First and foremost, there is no search function to find text within a chat. This would be invaluable in trying to find something mentioned days or weeks or more in the past in a chat. Second, there is no indication next to members of a chat or individual contacts indicating whether they are active (IE, in the app or at their desktop). Third, there is no way to get rid of the prominently displayed list on your desktop of all contacts from your mobile that have signal, even if you have never contacted them via signal. And this takes up valuable space on the desktop. Plus there is no way to reorder the annoying list of chats. Fourth, it’s great they finally added emojis, but still lacking sounds. Would be nice to have a few sound alert options, at least for the desktop version. Lastly, though I’m sure there are others if I thought a bit more, there is very limited ability to resize the chat window on the desktop. It takes up too much space, unless you minimize it completely.
Best Messaging App and constantly improving. I switched from What’s App about 9 months ago and never looked back! The updates continuously improve the App and started financially supporting the dev team once I was hooked. The emoji message tagging is definite improvement over What’s App. If I could recommend one feature to improve it would be the requirement for the desktop version to download the thousands of messages each time it loads. That seems unnecessary and time waiting but I don’t pretend to understand the architecture that may require that download. WA doesn’t need to do this. All in All, I prefer Signal over WA for many reasons and I believe the dev team deserves your support to keep the product secure and pure!!
Perfection is you’ll add just three things!!. Please Signal if you’ll just add these two features I’ll literally be able to delete all my other messaging apps— 1. Ability to edit messages! I want to fix my typos please. Just add a little “edited” text at the bottom, that’s fine, but please let us edit messages. This is such an essential feature that’s missing and makes it impossible to switch over. 2. Ability to bold and italicize words! Oh my gosh please. I am a writer, sometimes I need to italicize a word to get the intonation across. Or bold a title when making a list for someone. This is such a simple basic feature that is missing. 3. Ability to star/favorite messages to review later. Please! It’s such a good way to come back to important info or save meaningful messages to look at later. This feature would also mean the world so I can hold onto fond memories and loving messages from chats. I’m literally just holding my breath waiting for you to add these features and the second you do I am moving everyone I chat with and myself over to Signal full time and never looking back.
Needs better improvements to ensure reliability. A app promoted by all the experts has reliability it’s multimedia function is next level. Should be way to verify for average user that NO secret back doors or tampering possible. If your avoiding hackers, stalkers, corruption, big tech etc., then this is your app. Sadly you need phone number although understandable to avoid malicious and predatory activity nonetheless privacy should triumph over thinking your customers and society are filled with criminals when this generally is not the case. With signal possible to be tracked via metadata with this app but not bad hopefully they pioneer more efficient and absolute requirements to maintain people privacy( and security) and maybe more people wake up and reform the 4th amendment and the ongoing global incursion by big tech and the alphabet soups in everyday citizens lives.
Lost all my message history for the second time in 3 years. For the second time in the last few years, bugs in the new iOS device transfer flow have led to my old device wiping all its history after a "successful" transfer, followed by the new device crashing or resetting and deleting all the transferred history. Hundreds of thousands of messages, years of my personal life, communications, and connections were lost. It's a crushing feeling each time and this is now the second time it's happened. I'm losing all sympathy for the security argument for wiping the origin device after transfers. Also Signal's obstinate/avoidant decision to not allow any form of off-device backups on iOS (even as an advanced user option to export an encrypted backup dump as a local file) will continue to exacerbate any of their minor bugs into unnecessarily painful full db loss stories like this. Force wiping the old device shoots themselves in the foot by making any minor bug during transfer into a catastrophic data loss story. Why not strongly recommend the old device is wiped / allow remotely wiping it from the new device but allow the user to opt out? Hard to be an advocate for Signal or be excited about new features like stories, payments, and stickers when it drops your whole chat history routinely...
Best Private Messenger. Everyone knows how to find the name of an app from the url on the Play store, right? Well when an app has the words thought crime in it, and I’m already a T.I. experiencing RNM, well, that really hits home. If all data is going to be collected “Not Wittingly” then it all needs to be encrypted. I love that I can change the wallpaper for each conversation and sending big videos is a snap. Chat works great and I’ve been able to get about 10 of my friends and family on Signal Private Messenger. I haven’t used the payment system, seems like maybe they should have gone with a different coin or token, I’m not familiar with that part. App locks and having Face ID is a must. 🙉🙈🙊
A formerly loved app is sliding into the trash. With every “update” I hold my breath hoping the core defects such as frequent loss of connectivity with the server resulting in undelivered messages for many hours will be fixed. Instead I receive more useless features that continue to break the app at deeper levels. The most current update around Jan. 27, 2020, has now given me an app that doesn’t ring when called through Signal. It seems as though Signal has sold to a company like Facebook who’s only interest is to stuff useless features while ignoring basic functionality. BTW, WhatsApp now sends everything you type to Facebook servers before it sends your “encrypted” message to the recipient. I can no longer trust Signal as a secure app and neither should you. It is unlikely you will ever get to see this review as they place very old ones at the top, back when it Was a great and secure app.
Buggy and unreliable sync for *years*. For at least 4-5 years, Signal has purported to provide a way to sync your message history with a new device, but it continues to be extremely buggy, unstable. Reddit is full of complaints of the witchcraft needed for two phones to sync - it’s ridiculously inconsistent and often fails partway through, after 30-45 minutes of file transfers. Even worse, when upgrading to a new phone, I waited over an hour for the transfer to complete, re eh we a success message, and then found Signal on the new phone refused to open - it simply crashed to desktop over and over - while my entire message history had already been deleted from the old phone. Signal has known about these issues for years and has failed to fix them - it’s really only suitable if you don’t care about maintaining and being able to search your message history.
Useless: App needs to be up-to-date to receive messages, updates never show in App Store. Make it make sense. How are we supposed to actually use this app to send and receive messages if it has to update what seems like several times a month yet the updates never show in the App Store? I have to navigate to Signal’s page in the App Store to see the update. I’ve sent messages to friends and haven’t heard from them for weeks because they never got my message because they had no idea the app needed to be updated! It can be the safest, most secure messaging app in the world but if it doesn’t work it’s useless. I’m deleting it right after I submit this review. Worthless. And before the devs tell me to turn on automatic updates in the App Store: No. I’m not doing that. I don’t want the battery drain. This should not be an issue that your users have to work around.
