New Scientist Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

It always gets worse. It seems evert new release/update of an app is less comprehensive than the previous. This is true of most software. Why can you not, just leave it alone. just

Candy Crush-ification. I love New Scientist, and love reading it on the iPad, but this app is disappointing - every month or so it refuses to recognize my subscription for a couple of days. I write to customer service but it appears the app recovers itself. However, the ad at the bottom of the screen is just horrible. It gives the whole thing the feel of Candy Crush - Free Mode. Very tacky for content I’m paying for, and a major reduction in user experience. I think it’s tragic that the app product manager(s) have so little respect for the fabulous magazine content.

Slow and unreliable customer service. I subscribed this on 10/8 but can not set up password. Sent email and called left message to customer service and no body get back to me. I called couple times and finally get in touch with one lady but she obviously a clock water and more interested to get of duty than solve my issue. Her explain to me is that my account will not be effective until 10/21. I was surprised about this and never met same situation with any other magazine. So I told her I have done with this and ask for cancellation. Good, she told me they wont process it five days later. And no confirmation number no other follow up call or email. Guess she just lie to me and I have to waste time call them again to make sure they will process my cancellation.

Watch out for your money and your old issues... The app took my money when my subscription renewed but it refused to recognize that I had paid. I couldn’t restore purchases because the app would not recognize me. Thirty days later with no relief, I contacted Apple. (An excruciatingly painful process) Apple gave me no options other than to push through a credit to my credit card - which they did. But it’s worse than that. Every issue that I had not gotten around to downloading when I was a subscriber wants $4.99 now so I can read it. So - New Scientist magazine has ripped me off. While I was a subscriber I thought the app was a just bad joke - as you already you, or so you will realize - but I read the magazine anyway because I really liked it. Now I’m convinced this app is dangerous, both to ones’ mental health and wallet.

Best science mag. Been reading new scientist for over 40 years and can’t live without it! I love reading the articles in order of my curiosity when they come. I’ve just changed to digital and find it a great asset with even more resources available than having hard copy. I never thought I’d say this but I’m finding I prefer digital as the copies were always stacking up. The scrapbook option for articles is brilliant, as a new user I’m not sure how to scrapbook across devices but I’m sure I’ll figure it out:)

<3. I absolutely love and adore NewScientist, and appreciate the strides the app has made, especially over the last couple of years, where I found I no longer truly cared about having a physical magazine delivered, and no longer preferred using NewScientist in a web browser, two things I am very happy about, actually. One feature I would enjoy seeing, is a way to easily click to the text articles directly from the audio player & queue. I am an absolutely horrible listener, and have to do things like focus only on a person's lips while they're speaking, or I'll accidentally begin to tune them out. When I listen to NewScientist articles, I like to have the written article up so that I can pause the article and read the part that I have just noticed I've been unintentionally ignoring, ha... I think even normally functioning humans would enjoy being able to click directly to the written article from the audio player. :)

Best content meh app. I've been reading ns for a few decades. Went all digital for a few years but now am back to paper web and app. Great content. The app is frequently frustrating.

New Scientist aids in both character building and information retention. You build character as you seek to remain calm while waiting impatiently for the next issue, and you improve your information retention skills as you work on remembering which articles you read yesterday and attempting to recall the central thesis of said articles! Love it! Keeps the grey matter churning,

New Scientist is my New Addiction. Love this magazine! Having it so accessible is causing me to be informed of so many amazing science news stories. It’s hard to put down when you can look at previous articles so readily, it’s become a learning addiction. Thanks!

Outstanding Science Journalism. I am enjoying my subscription to the magazine. The articles are well-written and informative. The explanations provided in diagrams and side bars are done well too. I do have several requests. Please consider providing a highlighting feature in a future version of the application, and request the ability to view the pages as they appear in the original text version of the magazine. Thank you.

AWSOME. I have been reading this magazine since 2005, where I came across this from my boss. I have been reading them since then through my library when I retired from work when they offered it through RBDIGITAL which has now stopped their magazines but Libby and Overdrive have taken over. With all the current state of the world at this time, I trust them as a good source of their topics covered in the magazine and their other outlets. From what I have been reading and do follow up on the items I like They are NOT FAKE NEWS as other in the media.

NewScientist magazine is a breath of fresh air….. One, I’m a geek who loves science. And two, I’m tired of the vitriol, hatred, and misinformation (formerly lies) that X (formerly Twitter) spews and other news media report on. NewScientist is a British science magazine, and it talks about accomplishments and new areas of research in an easy to read format. Well researched articles describe new areas in Space, Technology, Physics, Health, Mind and Environment. Politics? Well, occasionally, but it’s not a focus and doesn’t have it’s own section. Sports? Well, unless it’s related to one of the other subjects, not really. I’m pleased to have this resource to go to.

The best content in the worst app. I have read and loved New Scientist for over 2 decades. This app does not do justice to the content. The app retains control of how and when content is downloaded. If you’re in airplane mode, for example, or commuting in a metro with no reliable Wi-Fi, you’ll find that the app did not download most images. Or it stopped the download after a few sections. Or, worst of all, it automatically deleted content you’d spent time downloading. When I say “spent time downloading “, I mean just that. You must scroll to the end of every page for the entire issue if you want it to land safely on your tablet. But don’t go too far, because you don’t want to trigger auto-delete by accident! It is only because the magazine is so good that I put up with this nonsense. Maybe I’ll try Zeno instead.

Love the content. I’ve enjoyed the stories on NewScientist for a while now and decided to subscribe. Unfortunately it’s been a nightmare trying to activate my account.

poor quality of material and now google ads in mobile version. From year to year this magazine became poorer. More and more of politicized blah-blah about climate and less and less about real science. Some areas like material science became out of scope of New Scientist. I guess this is because for writing about subjects like materials need not political position but understanding of the subject. And last blow is google ads that appear in mobile version. Hey, I paid (more than for others magazines) for subscription and you place those adds. You have a lot of money from me you have money from google ads; maybe it’s time to hire better contributors?

Great way to get New Scientist except.... The app functions well enough but Google ads appear at the bottom of the screen, covering magazine content unless wi-fi is turned off. I don’t know if New Scientist is making money by agreeing to allow Google ads or if Google if doing this without permission. I can’t give a good rating on this ap since the ads cover content and there doesn’t seem to be any way of stopping them from covering content (reporting that that ad covers content does not stop the content from being covered).

No App Support so I must write here.. Where is the 'Favorite This' Button? Where is the 'Back' Button? I received a Notification of an article which I wanted to save to read in the morning. I could not find a 'Save' or 'Favorite' Button, though it may have been in plain sight somewhere. So, I thought, maybe I must hit 'Favorites', in there top right corner, if I remember. Of course that listed all of nothing, those Favorites which I had saved. Maybe I couldn't find the button ever since I have downloaded this App maybe a week ago. So I tested getting back to my article by pressing each of the buttons beneath. Nothing. No way to get back to what one is reading. I certainly would not pay anything for an App like this. Is it because it is late that I cannot find a button?

UGH!!!!!. Worked for about two days, now the app does not allow me to access. Credentials work online, but not via app. Very frustrating.

It’s like the app is in a different universe. App doesn’t seem to exist in the same space-time continuum as the website or the daily/weekly briefings sent by email. Can’t login to website with an app subscription (really, New Scientist???) to read articles referenced in New Scientist emails, and the search feature in the app is worse than useless-won’t find articles using the entire title of the article as the search terms, can’t search more than one issue at a time... Total garbage! Do yourself a favor and get the subscription for the web-based version.

Mixed progress. Now more streamlined and less buggy; however, it defaults to a newsfeed instead of the library, and i can’t use it at night because there’s no dark mode support =_= I’m considering not renewing my subscription.

Can you add one more level of font size?. I am using iPhone 13. There are three levels of font size in this app. The first level is too small and the middle level is too big. Wondering can you add one more level which can bigger than first level? I am also a subscriber of the economists, their font size setting is perfect. They have much more convenient setting.

Good app but links lead to partial articles. It’s a Love this magazine and although I have subscribed to a plethora of magazines in my life this is the only one I have kept. Every time it would expire I would find myself perturbed when it wasn't in the mail box. And with the app, I can read it on my phone so the kids can page through the hard copy. I was always asking them, "where's the new scientist" and would have to dig it out of their room, or search the car, now I don't have to.

Great content, service not so much. I very much enjoy reading NS. Unfortunately, I keep paying for my subscription and they keep sending me cancellation notices for nonpayment. I then write NS and they say everything is good, until I get the next cancellation notice. Ugh.

Good but with glairing problem. The updated app is an all round massive improvement over the previous app. I have been reading NS back to back since I was a teenager, and after moving abroad I elected to skip the printed version in favour of the digital. This way it's always in my pocket and I evade the massive stack of finished editions. As happy I am with all the small improvements, one change from the old app, a reduction in usability is to me hard to forgive. The app does not support landscape on mobile phones. It does support landscape viewing on my iPad, so I can only assume it was a concious decision to restrict the switch to landscape on smaller devices. This seems to ignore the massive amount of phonecases that specifically make it easy to lay your phone down for reading hands free. I am now forced to prop my phone against objects just to be able to sip my coffee as I read. Thank god for my old iPad, but that doesn't travel with me and thus this oversight or uncomprehesable design decision takes away the only real advantage I saw to subscribing digitally. I guess I will be switching back to the printed subscribtion.

I bought a new iPad but I can’t read the magazine anymore. Warning - do not use this app. It says I don’t need a log in, because I bought my year to year subscription thru the iTunes Store - but guess what? The app asks me for a log in anyway. (Which doesn’t exists, because I bought the app thru the apple. What horrible junk...

Improved, but a long way to go. Finally, it remembers where you left off reading and starts up there. I’ve been waiting years for that. When I choose “copy” how about just putting the URL on the clipboard without the gratuitous vapid text before it? And when I follow a link to the new scientist web site, could it please leave me logged in so I don’t have to enter credentials every single time? Better yet, if the article is already on my device, why not open that?

Does not work as on the computer.. I can read current and past issues on my computer in a browser but to read on iPhone or iPad my subscription does not authorize reading, it seems s that a separate subscription is required. Probably an oversight by New Scientist management. Consider how long it takes to read an issue each week and the utility to start with the hard copy and follow up in short dips over the week. The Economist and The New Yorker work for me that way.

Best at what it does. Concise, clear, and interesting. The best feature is a link to the original paper. This publication is worth the time. It is written for busy people who want to keep up, but can’t spend hours reading. The graphics and overall presentation are on target for one who enjoys science and its rapid pace of change.

Individual issues are incomplete. UPDATE: After a few days I had to delete and re-download the individual issue and it seems like it was updated to include the cover story. I bought an individual issue for 6.99 (December 4th issue) specifically to read the cover story. After downloading the issue I realized it included all sections except the cover story which is the basically the only section you can’t read for free on their website. Very disappointed to find out I paid 6.99 for an organized version of their free content.

Wider range of science than other magazines. Not only is the range of coverage better, most authors are good writers. Not just climate change but the other dozen existential threats that are just as important such as biodiversity loss. And when fossil f you El alternatives are discussed, it is not just rah rah gushing hopium but challenges as well

Always a pleasure to see a new issue.. Really enjoy seeing the new issue cover. Graphically a joy. Yet the science is first rate, detailed and well written. Editing is tops. The coverage is comprehensive, meets you with coverage you didn’t realize you were looking for. For the informed lay science reader, this is the weekly summary of your world, bring you the best of the moment as it is unfolding.

Where can I find articles received from Notification Center?. Every time I open a notification and didn’t finish reading and it is gone when I came back later.

One of the worst. Amazing that such an incredible magazine about science and technology is delivered through one of the worst apps out there. Terrible UI, with lame features and, worst of all, a tendency to lock up on issues and then never release them. You can't even delete them when they get like this, short of uninstalling the entire app. Which would be fine, except you then would lose the scrapbook of saved articles. And seems like the problem gets worse with time. I have half a dozen issues from the last 6 months I can neither read nor delete. Which is the second worst thing. Great you can save individual articles. But no way to sync these across devices or somehow save them in the cloud for later syncing if you buy a new device. Too bad really. Because the content is, as New Scientist has always been, fantastic.

Great Mag Terrible App. Pathetic that one of the best science and technology magazines in the wold is delivered in an app that feels like a web page from the 90s. Basically just PDFs of the mag stuffed into an app. Everything is clunky and non intuitive. And the app trims content so its a lot thinner than the print version. Mind blown. Also. Scroll through the 5 star reviews. They’re obviously written by the design team. That’s the only reason this awful app can be at 3.8 stars.

So very very bad. This app supersucks for all of the reasons given in the other reviews. I've been a new scientist subscriber for over 40 years, and yet the app refused to recognize my subscription number. I had expected the app to have a search option, so you could search previous magazines by keyword. None of that. I'm not interested in downloading magazines: I have a print subscription.

New Scientist app is pathetic. I'm tired of having to call to find out why the app isn't working. After being a subscriber for decades and having a house full of old issues I thought the app would save space and reduce clutter but I find myself running to the store to not avoid waiting until Monday to fix the problem. Please get your act together.

Dark mode makes some text illegible. Please improve dark mode readability. Dark mode is more comfortable on my eyes, but some text, hyperlinks, supplemental material sections, and even whole articles are impossible to read. Or at least make it easier to toggle dark mode on and off.

Easy to read but would prefer to listen. I have a couple of apps for weekly publications. One of them includes and audio version which I can listen to on the move. This app would definitely benefit from a similar functionality.

Quick accurate and interesting. I am a scientist and find many articles both in and outside of my field of expertise in NS. I reach for the app in my down time to inform me and to provide the references to understand the details of the journal articles that appear in the news items. I’m very happy to have NS as a resource to keep up with publications outside of my field of research.

Important news missed by the mainstream press. Reading New Scientist has caused me to change my behavior to stay safer, healthier and to do more personally to help the environment. The Covid information was invaluable, such as learning early on that it spreads in aerosols rather than just droplets.

Best news reporting ever. Super duper magazine full of well written and illustrated stories about - not only science subjects - but much more. I’ve subscribed to New Scientist for 4 decades. I never tire of scanning the news and reading several articles in every issue. The accuracy is outstanding, the insights plentiful, and the humor, puzzles and games delightful. Best news magazine out there.

Just fascinating. I was never any good at science at school - maybe it was the presentation? But I just love New Scientist. It’s ideal for picking up when you have a random 10 minutes, or sometimes I binge read several issues. The quirky British humor of the last couple of pages is worth it alone! It’s sort of the People Magazine in format, on a far more interesting level. Everyone who finds it at my house loves it. Totally worth the money.

Great Magazine, Mediocre App. The title says it all. I really enjoy this weekly new source but at least 4 times I’ve had trouble logging in from both my iPhone and iPad and have had to call for assistance. They should write a computer science story about it. The magazine is 5 stars, the app is 3, which averages to 4.

Ads! Say it isn’t so!. I just opened the New Scientist app, and was presented with an advertisement. I subscribe because I want to support good science reporting, and because I loathe ads. Totally unacceptable. I’ll have to re-think renewing my subscription.

Good to read. I love to read the content of the magazine provided. But one small thing I like to point it out for the app. Every time I open the app, it is jumping to the homepage but not the place I read before I recently quit. Is it possible that I can go to the place where I stopped? Thank you.

App makes it hard to finish reading an article. If you are half way through an article or issue and want to return to reading it at a later point, the app kicks you out and you have to hunt for where you left off. Otherwise the app works ok

Easy. This is a great app, easy to use and the content is saved on your device so you can view it off line. It will do its own housekeeping by automatically deleting old issues, or not, and you can easily browse through the older issues and download what interests you.

One step forward, one step back, many steps to go. Sadly, this version again reverts to the “dump user into Home Screen” when you start the app, rather than straight back into the most-recent article being read. This is the single most important feature to add back (for like the third time?). I have no idea why this keeps disappearing and reappearing. :( There are some potentially nice audio features now. The navigation between audio and text is a mess and difficult to match up, but it’s a start at least. New Scientist could learn a lot from apps like The Economist in this regard. Typography is still weak. Font size can either be too tiny, too large, or billboard sized. It needs additional scales and a decent way to preview.

Stay on top of the latest science news. New Scientist is a trustworthy source of the newest scientific developments. Well-written prose condenses sometimes challenging scientific and technical information from a wide variety of fields into understandable articles.

Alpine. I’m totally in love with this app! As it helps me to upgrade my space of knowledge especially while it’s the period to doing my IELTS exam! Because this app has variety sections which gives me a general idea of taking over IELTS reading and writing task2, well done for the stunning job NEW SCIENTIST.

Expensive, no web access. If you subscribe through the app you won't have access to NS material online. The subscription fee is also much higher through the app.

Great content, app needs some tweaks. Only disappointments are with app design: 1. when reading in Night Mode with low brightness and Night Shift on (how I have it set all the time), linked text (in red) are nearly impossible to read while parts of the article still have bright white background as if “extra info” ignores fact night mode is on 2. When checking for updated content (nearly every time app opens) please remember which article I was reading and where in the article I was and go back to that spot rather than to all the cover pages. I can easily see cover pages by pressing home icon but have to manually toggle through them and scroll down articles to find where I last was

Love it!. Great to have this at my fingertips for quick informative reads.

Ban Banner Ads for Paid Subscription. New Scientist (a great magazine by the way) I now places banner ads (driven through Google) at the bottom of every article page with the latest app update even on a fully paid subscription. No option to pay an additional amount for removal of these banner ads. This isn’t ethical as the ads also appear on all prior paid subscriptions when no ads appeared before. These prior magazine issues were stored on my iPhone (or so I thought). These prior subscriptions were paid at a higher rate then than now so how is it the ads can now be placed on my prior paid subscriptions where they didn’t appear. I suggest that New Scientist decision makers rethink their monitizing policy change. Otherwise it is hasta la vista. Update as of 3NOV2019 Happy to say that the banner ads don’t appear any more for paid subscriptions. Excellent magazine as I did acknowledge earlier and still is.

Excellent!. Easy to use, easy to consult precedent issues, excellent app! Thumb up!

Far inferior to Zinio. Was reading NS in Zinio, then switched to this. Landscape mode cuts off images with no way to scroll to see the rest, app always opens on table of contents instead of where you left off reading, no way to bookmark anything. Terrible reading experience.

Ruined by Google. Not shown in the screen shots are the Google ads at the bottom of the screen on each article. These ads often contain moving content and are highly annoying. If you don’t mind moving ads covering the bottom few lines on each page then this is a pretty good app. Otherwise, the printed version might be a better alternative. Interestingly, the ads don’t appear on my older iPad.

Understanding Scientific Ideas. This is real mind blowing scientific magazine! Read and try to understand what are the ideas. Your world will be changed soon!

4/5. Love the publication but the app could use some minor improvements - scrolling articles is jumpy because of the nav bar - scroll acceleration is also on for some reason, this is usually a feature to mimic macOS on windows, not sure why it’s happening on iOS - no search, at least I was not able to find it

Informative. I was looking for something that was informative across many science disciplines, yet easily consumable by article. New Scientist hits this 'spot on'. If you want a deep dive, you'll have to subscribe to a journal or research reports in your discipline, but I love NS because I can learn enough in many disciplines to know what is emerging across many fields without a huge effort. Thank you NS!

Good but not great. It still feels like a byproduct of the print edition. Not a lot of effort into extra features. But very readable and reliable. And delivery is more timely than with print.

Return of an old pleasure. New Scientist was a familiar pastime in my college days 50 plus years ago, and now in my mid seventies, i am rediscovering the lost pleasures….missing a favourite…’mathematical games’ …but its a great pastime…thanks and kudos to all who are continuing the great work !

A few improvements. Good app, but would love to see issue status (ie read or not read), and the ability to auto download new issues. I often binge read my magazines every few months and so have a hard time figuring out where I left off, and end up having to download/check a bunch I’ve already read. A little annoying.

Excellent... Much better than Zinio. App does all I want... Of course it's a great magazine. Much nicer than working with Zinio.

Doesn't work. Just keeps showing the error "there are no issues available please check your internet connection", on wifi or cellular, on iPad or iPhone, even if device rebooted, or app deleted and reinstalled.

Handy Science. Still the best science magazine for appreciating what's going on in fields other than your own and now it's in the palm of my hand. Great stuff!

Two improvements needed. Should be able to change to a sans serif font like Calibri to make it easier to read. In dark mode it is very hard to read the red text. Try some other colour. Love the magazine.

Bought but can't read. No free articles, so I buy an interesting looking issue for three bucks. I approve payment, button changes to download, I hit it and get an error about problems with the auth system. Kill and restart app; still says download, still same error. If the client thinks I own it, just give me the content if you can't double check with the server. There are easier ways to read these articles for free than whatever your broken security system thinks I'm up to.

Night time reading. There is no way I can find that allows me to get a black background, like was available in previous versions

Excellent. Great magazine with an excellent app. Highly recommended.

Mind candy in a shiny wrapper. A refreshing dose of objective reporting in a world of fake news factories.

Good magazine interface. Works as you expect a magazine to work. I wish I could share whole articles instead of links but that is not unique to this magazine.

Good app. Good magazine

From 4.5 stars to 4.2. I read 90% of each issue, all on my iPod, none on my iPad. THE GREAT: choice of 3 font sizes; continuous scrolling (like Safari Reader); text can be selected and then searched on the web (choose 'define'); can be used horizontally or vertically (all 4 directions); great navigation tools; easy flip to the next article; pictures, tables and videos can be zoomed in or out with a tap; and there are built in links to the web. THE DISAPPOINTING: The new feature lets you save individual articles but you can't add text or high light text. Each iOS device has its own list. If you restore your device and reinstall from a backup the saved articles are gone. The serif font can be enlarged, but not the much smaller San-serif font used in side bars. With progressive lens it much easier to read narrow columns which are not available on the tablet. When you accidentally switch articles while scrolling and go back you are sent back to the top of the article. Downloading issues and deleting them was very well designed in the first version, this version is mildly annoying. To change text size you must close the issue. To delete a downloaded issue you must open it. Silly interface changes. This last version has no improvements...just removed good features.

All I want. ... is to have the app open to the last page I was reading.

New science. I love the variety of topics as well as the fact that the articles are readable by most people

Simple and intuitive. New Scientist has amazing stories and the simple and intuitive interface is perfect.

Great when you’re away.. So nice to still get access when I’m not home for the mail issue.

Great app. Great app

Only works on one device. To my knowledge this is the only app that works on only one mobile device, the one that purchased the app. The purchase is not linked to your Apple ID. If you buy it on your iPad you will have to pay again to get issues on your iPhone. If you have to replace your iPad the app purchase is lost.

Content is great but the app sucks!. I love New Scientist. Great content, excellent coverage of topics and well written. Too bad we have to put up with such lousy mobile app. Downloading to device is just one example of the poor design. You have to download one issue at a time and the silly app deletes your downloads mistakenly because of low memory! I have an IPhone with 512GB and only 10% full!

Almost great. As good as the print edition, however the links that go to other articles rarely (actually never) work. That interactivity and info networking would be the point to me of an online edition. However everything else works the way it should and its convenient, thus 4 stars.

New Update Fixes All. The app now remembers where you are in an article so you can seamlessly pick it back up! Upgraded to 5 stars. Best impartial science journalism around and now with a modern functional app.

In app purchase doesn’t work. The in app feature doesn’t work. I can’t log on with my Apple account ID. Good content, but for a science app, you think they’d know how technology works.

wrong prices. the description says 115 per year, but in the app it says 155. i would go for 115, but 155 is way too much.

Excellent - effortless, enjoyable, worth it. This is my new go-to reading app - so easy to use, read and the content is always strong. Love that I have access to back issues so right now I have endless supply of reading on the go.

Excellent news source, great application. Everything is well done. Easy to use, solid to read.

Great. I love it. I think it's the best magazine and app there is.

Our Favourite Magazine. New Scientist is the only magazine that my husband and I read. We have appreciated the coverage of so many topics. I’m disappointed that the app has to be connected to wifi to read it. Downloading the magazine ment I could read it when there is no wifi. Mae

Not perfect. If you're a long time reader of the paper magazine, you may not like this app. Different feel, article titles are different, no new content. Why not provide us with something closer to The Economist on iPad? For me, even a straight PDF of the magazine would be better than this. At least, I'm now getting NS on time!

Such a good publication. I love the New Scientist magazine and the app is great. Unlike many other publications where the associated app has some articles of the original, the New Scientist app is identical to the magazine. Well worth the investment.

Rip off. Was supposed to get 4 weeks free upon joining but was charged immediately Then I see on the app that it has a 6 weeks free offer Good way to screw people over

Amazing articles, app not perfect. The app is a bit hard to navigate/not very intuitive (I especially would love a "back" button). Also, there is SO MANY great articles that I would like a way to save all my favorite ones in one spot to find them easily again.

Advertisements. If you are going to have ads please put them inline with the text as in the paper magazine. The google ads at the bottom of the page are most unwelcome. Are you going to make me pay more for an ad free version? I feel cheated that an “upgrade” has downgraded the app. The ads are still there - down one star

So much better than Zinio. I love it when a company takes the trouble to build an app that customizes the experience of their readers. This is exactly what New Scientist has done. The Zinio app was buggy, clunky so I was ultra pleased when this came out.

Enjoy my subscription, in-app browser lacks features. Really enjoy the selection of informative, well-written articles. What bums me most is opening links in the in-app browser is a dead end; there's no option to open the page in Safari so I can save to read later instead of interrupting my flow.

Content great, new app sucks. Love the content but the new app forced on us a couple weeks ago is a massive down grade. Very disappointing. I can no longer see which articles I’ve read or even which issue I’m on. And night mode has disappeared. Very frustrating to try to read. Was much better before “upgrade”

Sharing New Scientist Articles Disabled. Unfortunately the iTunes version of New Scientist does not allow us to share articles via email, even to yourself! Best to get New Scientist directly from them.

👉 Are you looking for an Adsense alternative advertising platform?

Adsterra is the most preferred ad network for those looking for an alternative to AdSense. Adsterra is the ideal choice for new sites with low daily traffic. In order to advertise on the site in Adsterra, like other ad networks, a certain traffic limit, domain age, etc. is required. There are no strict rules. Sign up!

NewScience. A great informative digital or print magazine with articles that are "real facts", researched, not "fake news"!

Does not recognize my sign on. The app does not recognize my signs on so I can use it. I’ve called customer service and IT support and still does not work on my iPad .

No search feature and web version is a disaster. If anyone knows how to log in AND be able to read the web version, I’d appreciate the help. Tried on safari, Firefox, chrome, everything, doesn’t work, keeps asking me to sign in while signed in -_-

Before you subscribe read this (I did and regret it). Before you subscribe to this App please be aware of the following serious issues it has: 1. You DO NOT get access to the latest content until a week later. So if you read a cool story on New Scientist’s twitter account for example and want to read it right away, tough luck, you have to wait a week. 2. If you subscribe through the App, you DO NOT get access to the web version which has the latest issues and is up-to-date. 3. While reading articles inside the App you often get links to previous articles, but you CAN NOT read those articles because they point to the web versions instead of the App version. 4. You CAN NOT search for anything across multiple magazines, you can only search inside the magazine you are reading. 5. Your bookmarks ARE NOT saved to iCloud, which means they do not carry over between your iPhones and iPads. It also means that if you need to reinstall the App (something you probably will do because of bugs in the App) you will lose all your precious bookmarked articles. 6. DO NOT believe the high rating of this App. What they do is that after they get a lot of bad ratings they release “a new version” of the App (really the same App with maybe a couple of bugs fixed) which clears all the bad ratings (Apple should fix this behavior). 7. The interface is among the worst interfaces you will ever use to navigate an App. Totally non-intuitive. 8. The only GOOD thing about this App is the quality of the articles themselves, but they are layered behind one of the worst App experiences I have ever used in my life.

Concise and informative. Introduces current discoveries and curiosities in a succinct and informative manner.

Great mag. Complete app failure.. Purchase via iTunes. Trouble logging in each and every time. Customer support was not helpful. Password issues, freezing-up, logging in over and over again. How does a magazine such as this have an app that performs so poorly? Truly disappointed.

My favourite journal and app. The app is clean making l easy to find articles I’m interested in and easy to read or listen to them. Kudos!

Shameful App. Great magazine read for 50 years. This app is a disgrace on so many levels. Surely no scientist was consulted

Fatal Flaw. There’s a fatal flaw where the app does not remember your last read article/issue position. Coupled by the fact that the app will check for latest content every now and then and then kick you back to home screen is making reading New Scientist a chore. I’ve previously feedback about this but somehow the developer isn’t listening.

So glad I joined. Every day there is a fascinating new article to read and I’m glad to be here for it! Thanks New Scientist.

Terrible. How could such a good science magazine put out such a terrible app? Pretty much unusable. Hasn’t been updated in a year. Get it together new scientist!

Would definitely recommend. Great for being upaded on newest scientific discoveries and technological break throughs

New Scientest. If you want to keep current with Scientific topics, this is a most proven way to accomplish that.

Love this magazine!. Science news that anyone can understand. Every magazine has something useful, funny, and amazing. It is also visually appealing. Popular science at its best.

Not nearly as nice a read as the print version or even Zinio. I used to read the print version which was very nice. Great format. Thoughtful layout. Restful on the eyes while I lay on the couch. The app loses all that. Makes it just like browsing a bunch of random articles on a website. The Newsstand version also doesn't include the intro page from the editor. I liked that page a lot! The Zinio version was much better. If I can I will switch back to Zinio. It looks like the magazine! The Zinio version also allows emailing a text version of the complete article whereas the Newsstand version only sends you to the link on the web and it may only give you the first paragraph or two.

Review. I love this article’s

How about saving my place. This app is ok ... just ok. The biggest problem is that it checks for new content several times a day and loses my place every time.

Great magazine. This is a must magazine for anyone that is interested in science. Every article is an important read. I read cover to cover.

Superb. Great app for updates our brains

Enjoy. The most fun and inspiring of all the science apps.

Needs work to achieve that “magazine” feeling. At present this app is in some nether land between a straightnews feed and a crafted, edited magazine. All the content is there, of course, and the meta experience with links and searches is a plus; but it’s simply not a replacement for a magazine in your hands.

Ads. Ads. Ads that block navigation. For a paid service. The content is 5 stars. The app is 1 star. Shameful.

Great magazine! Terrible app!. The registration, sign in and subscription process is not customer friendly. Development distasteful.

Very good app. Easy to use. Nice clear layout and it just works (so far)

Great magazine, worst app. WHY CAN’T ONE SEE THE SCROLLBAR IN DARK MODE? WHY ARE PICTURES SO BRIGHT THAT YOU CAN’T READ TEXT? WHY CAN’T IT REMEMBER YOU LAST LOCATION IN APP? Who knows, who is John Galt?

Meh.... Irritating app. Won't recognize my account.

New Scientist is great; the App Store is a failure. Made the mistake of renewing a subscription through Apple's App Store. It worked for a couple of weeks. Now the app is asking me to pay for issues I've sucribed to. This never happened when I subscribed directly through New Scientist.

No better than the choked with annoying ads website. Practically unreadable at times from annoying ads. Not what I bargained for in a hundred dollar plus subscription. Should have tried the 12 week introductory. Oh well I won’t be resubscribing. Waste of hard earned dollars

Review. Magnificent !!!

Hypocritical. Funny how I saw an article about making science free here. Maybe you should start by taking your own paywall down.

Nice scientific articles.. It’s very interesting about the all the scientific support that you have on the app.

Great content, horrible app. From the second I downloaded this app it’s had nothing but problems. I need to redownload issues every time I open the app due to a lack of storage on my phone, despite having 10 gigabytes available. And now it won’t even let me download any issues at all. The content is excellent, but the app itself is an absolute disaster.

Excellence. NewScientist is an excellent source of information for all. As a Biology lecturer, I was able to give current information on topics such as GMO foods to current human evolution.

Love the content. Super relevant and engaging content.

Exceptional. The choice of articles in content and quality arereally “bright” I enjoy them cery much indeed. Thank you!

Hate the new adverts. As a paying subscriber throwing in cheap, ugly network adverts is absolutely horrible. By all means place adverts between articles as other digital mags do, but sticking them over the content I’ve paid to read is a joke - it’s crass, clumsy UI that benefits neither users nor advertisers.

So glad I subscribed. Every day learning something new!

New Scientist Reviews. Articles are very succint and yet informative.

Bad. No user friendly. 10 year old could make a better app. Disappointing.

Dr. Getting a subscription with a sign in set of credentials is difficult beyond my usual experience so I don't want to waste more time trying to subscribe I may try again in a few months as hopefully you will correct such annoying difficulties

What’s happening. If you want to know what’s happening in science, this is the magazine for you. Much theoretical and some practical information

Addicting. I get the magazine, and the App, I found the app to be addicting, start reading it and you will not put it down, a amazing magazine.

Fascinating and significant information. I learn things that I don’t find elsewhere. This is a great source for useful news. Thanks

Awesome. I love this magazine and the events it holds.

Customer service is lacking. I’ve given up trying.

Mixed blessing. Good articles, clunky app, heavy upsell promotions, next to impossible to cancel. Be forewarned.

Don't bother. App crashes all the time. Very frustrating. Now I need to figure out how to cancel my subscription.

Like clockwork. Every four or five months this app just decides that I need to subscribe, despite the fact that my subscription is paid by automatic debit. And then Customer Support is willing but clueless. Try this, try that, try it again. How about, you fix the app so it works!

New Subscriber. Just started this subscription and thoroughly enjoying it. This is also a great complement to Scientific American.

One of my fav mags. Great science
