The foremost field guide to Australian birds is now available as a fully universal app on the iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad with a comprehensive collection of bird calls.

Michael Morcombe’s Field Guide to Australian Birds has been called the most comprehensive field guide to Australian birds in the market today and now it is perfectly complimented by the eGuide which features:
iOS optimised controls – swipe to next or previous species, one-tap enlargement of an image (iPad) and rotate the device (landscape) to enlarge an image completely (and fit the width of the screen).
Over 300 hi-res bird images covering 59 bird species.
Most bird species have a detailed distribution map showing any subspecies that occur.
Detailed text descriptions of almost all bird species including songs and calls, measurements and breeding behaviour.
Over 170 carefully-selected and edited sound recordings. Many species are represented with multiple call examples showing the full range of vocalizations.
The ability to compare any two images, maps, or sounds, side by side on the screen. The ability to filter by geographic location, so that you see only the species likely to occur in your location, and to further reduce the possibilities to usual or vagrant species in the selected area.
A “Smart Search” that gives the ability to search by distinguishing features such as size, colour, physical features, habitat and exclude certain types of birds (eg. Passerines).
A basic personal species list that stores your sightings saved to the device* with the ability to email the list.
A comprehensive help and introduction section to help you if you get stuck or don’t understand how a certain feature works.

*Uninstalling/reinstalling the program will result in the loss of your list, it is recommended that you keep your own backup (master list) separate from the application.

We invite all users to share their comments and ideas on our forum at www.mydigitalearth.com

NB. This Application WILL ONLY work on an iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad running iOS V7.1 or higher NOT A NORMAL IPOD CLASSIC/NANO.

The Michael Morcombe and David Stewart eGuide to the Birds of Australia LITE Comments & Reviews 2026

A useful app. This Lite edition seems to function well. I am an American with limited knowledge of Australian birds. This app only describes 59 birds. However, they are well described. There are a number of color illustrations of each species, male and female. There are also nest illustrations. Many species have vocalizations available. There are detailed range maps available, in color. There is also a substantial amount of text describing each species. There is also a search function which allows you to find a bird based on features, appearance, color, etc. The app also apparently allows you to specify your home range. All in all, a good app. Full app is rather pricey, but may be worth it.

Crashes on opening. I wanted to check out the lite version before purchasing the full $30 version but given its 4 years old it probably shouldn’t be a surprise that it doesn’t work. It won’t even open.

Missing Bird. Diamond Dove, Geopelia cuneata, is missing

Didn't work at first, but now it is great.. Thankfully, I started with the free version because, sadly, it isn't working at all. The Smart Search function gives me an error message (no matter which combinations I use). Touching the Taxonomic Index or the Alphabetic Index shuts down the app. Edtied to add good news: After turning my location off and then later back on again, the app seems to work now. It sure is beautiful, if only the full version wasn't that terribly expensive.

FANTASTIC!. So good that I'm going to buy the full version. Listen to numerous calls, easy searching. I've been seeing this Kestrel I haven't been able to identify. Popped it in and there is was, the Nankeen Kestrel! Log sighting etc. It's so easy my husband can use it.

Ok not Great. This is a good app for Australian bird which it allows you to manage lists of the your findings in the field. However it has a more than a few bugs, and the bird that appears in the the icon the 'Regent Bowerbird' is not even listed in the app!?

Janine. This app is fantastic. I can identify so many birds now. Thank you.

Terrible Support. I paid for and downloaded the app a few years ago. Great app. It disappeared and I downloaded the light version. No record of me having downloaded the full version before, so I paid for it AGAIN and seem to have got the lite version again. MMM. Lots of money, ordinary service.

Good could be better. The app had some difficulties that I think you could fix but it is so cool and helpful

Very good. Detailed consistent drawings and recordings.

Excellent app!!. This app is excellent! Now only does it have good pictures and information, it also includes sounds of different calls they birds make.

Very helpful app. I love it, and paid the full price for it. I believe I got my monies worth. Thank you. Is it still being supported and updated?

Brilliant work. This app rocks.

Michael Morcombe eGuide to Birds. Looks like it could be a great app. Have been told the paid version is very good. I decided to trial the free version before buying but couldn't get it too work so won' t bother with paid version.

Dont waste your time get the full version. So limited is is useless, seach does not work for simple groups like ‘dove’. Get the full version which is a 4/5 stars

I was told this version was free.... I read on the full version that this smaller version could be tried for free, so you could see if you liked the way the app felt. As such, I am quite unhappy to have been charged $7.99 for it....

Exporting from lists. I paid for this app many years ago so have definitely got my money’s worth out it. Use it all the time and love it. However recently I can’t export my bird lists as I used to be able to which is really really unhelpful as I recorded species as I used the coordinates to be able to map distribution and now I’m having to add coordinates manually into a csv. Can someone advise if this app is no longer being supported.

Crashes. Free version crashes when trying to open the menu. Glad i haven’t wasted money on the paid app. I would really like a functioning bird app

Clumsy navigation. The application has reasons detail but I found the menu system clumsy and awkward. Good effort though
