====================================

Perl is a high-level, general-purpose, interpreted, dynamic programming language. Perl was originally developed by Larry Wall in 1987 as a general-purpose Unix scripting language to make report processing easier. Since then, it has undergone many changes and revisions and become widely popular amongst programmers. Larry Wall continues to oversee development of the core language, and its upcoming version, Perl 6. Perl borrows features from other programming languages including C, shell scripting (sh), AWK, and sed. The language provides powerful text processing facilities without the arbitrary data length limits of many contemporary Unix tools, facilitating easy manipulation of text files. Perl gained widespread popularity in the late 1990s as a CGI scripting language, in part due to its parsing abilities.

In addition to CGI, Perl is used for graphics programming, system administration, network programming, finance, bioinformatics, and other applications. Perl is nicknamed "the Swiss Army chainsaw of programming languages" because of its flexibility and power. It is also referred to as the "duct tape that holds the Internet together", in reference to its ubiquity and perceived inelegance.

Larry Wall began work on Perl in 1987, while working as a programmer at Unisys, and released version 1.0 to the comp.sources.misc newsgroup on December 18, 1987. The language expanded rapidly over the next few years.

Perl 2, released in 1988, featured a better regular expression engine. Perl 3, released in 1989, added support for binary data streams.

Originally the only documentation for Perl was a single (increasingly lengthy) man page. In 1991, Programming Perl, known to many Perl programmers as the "Camel Book" because of its cover, was published and became the de facto reference for the language. At the same time, the Perl version number was bumped to 4, not to mark a major change in the language but to identify the version that was documented by the book.

Great App!. I am writing a compiler that targets many languages and this app is ideal for my purposes. Keep up the good work!

Deceptive. You pay two bucks for this game, only to then have to pay more money to actually use it! You can read the how-tow guide but cannot run compilations without buying them.

Practically Useless. The program lacks any real capabilities.... I guess you could use it to do some math problems... But peels true power is restricted. Can't import modules. Can't create an icon for your program. As far as I know you can't access, and edit files....

Perl on your iPhone. Mostly.. Uses an online interpreter, so you have to be online to execute the peel script. Also, It does not seem possible to include other modules, for instance I can 'use Data::Dumper;' , but I can't 'use JSON;'

Good start. I've just downloaded this app and written a few basic Perl programs, and it has worked well so far. There are two things I'd like to see added in the updates: (1) input from files so I can save more than one set of input data; (2) option to email the source programs so that I can use them on other devices, e.g,, my iMac or iPad.

Don't waste your time. Just a front end for you to purchase.

Very basic support. This is not a very useful Perl implementation. First it requires online access and won't work offline. Second it does not allow interactive user input. Instead it gives a separate screen to provide user input before launching the script. May be good for entering pre-determined values. Third, editor will not scroll. If you past half screen then you can't see what you type.

Agree with the others, good start. If need to scratch an itch and do some Perl on your phone, this works pretty well. It does require an internet connection, so know that going into it. It might be nice if it had a custom keyboard which made some of the commonly used special chars ( like $, @ or ;) available at the top level. But for what it is, it works.

Pretty weak. This is pretty far from anything resembling perl. It actually runs on a remote server somewhere? Lol.

Works, but limitations.. Works fine. Uses online compiler, so it needs internet access to work. No easy way to share code between devices.

It's a start, but needs more. This is a pretty cool app, but it is limited. I think the idea for this app is great, however the implementation is limited. For example, in the 'HELLO WORLD' example provided doesn't work. I would give it a higher rating if < STDIN> worked. This app is a good start, but clearly not a finished product. If you are trying to learn perl don't start here because this app will mess you up on some of the basics.

Can’t run anything before paying. The program is completely worthless unless you’re ready to pay for the privilege of actually running your script. It starts you with 0 compilations available. What a joke.

FREE is deceiving here. You can download the app for free and run the sample code already given for free. That's it! If you even want to test the app for any other code sample then you have to pay. IMHO listing app as paid and pricing it to $2.99 would have been a true description. As $2.99 is the payment you have to make to get unlimited compilations.

Don't bother. Have to buy "compiles" for an interpreted language? Useless...

Not bad for a first attempt.... First, I want to say THANKS. I have been looking for a Perl scripting/programming tool for the iPad/iPod since the generation 1 iPod Touch arrived, and here it is... so, thanks. I look forward to improvements. I would like to see improvements to the file system interface, perhaps a directory manager to manage Perl programs and their files. I have not yet tried any file i/o, but my first look didn't find great tools for managing my own .pl files let alone Perl program created files. It is slow; don't expect fast runtimes. I can live with this, as my primary reason for wanting to do Perl on the iPad is for entertainment value on long flights. I would LOVE some form of Dropbox integration so that Perl programs and files written on my Macs and PCs can be shared/sync'd with my iPad whenever I am within range of a data link (WIFI for me). Again, I look forward to seeing a version 2, so keep at it.

Review for PERL. I am really happy to have found this app. The ability to edit my PERL program code when away from my computer is really good and I will make use of it often. It requires that I set up the input in advance of running the program and that is a little bit inconvenient but I can work with that ok.

Useless without extra purchase.. Would be at least better to have 1-10 compilations available to see if it really works for the tasks I need. Without that it's useless.

Useless unless you buy IAP. This app will not let you compile anything unless you purchase compilation credits

This isn't free. You have to pay to run a script. And once you do and realize that this app can't handle STDIN, you can't get your money back. Not a perlish way.

A good toy, but limits your use.. I was 30 minutes into a Perl-coding work session with this app on my iphone, when it just cut me off. It said I had used up my quota of compiles for the day! No prior warning; no hint as to what that limit was; no plan B for buying an offline compiler or buying more online access. Very frustrating.
