Mel Gamboa - Best Search Tool for Vegan places
It’s easy to be mislead by ads or SEO’s that some restaurants have and then when you check them they barely have more than one vegan option in their menus (when they have any).
Also, to be honest, most of us vegans prefer to be patrons of restaurants 100% vegan, and thats what makes HAPPY COW app vegan’s best friend.
It’s worth it the small fee that actually supports the app development and is more than worth it to have it available for any time you decide to explore new cities and new vegan food places worldwide. Yes, the collective contribution to add as much information about vegan places is real.
The beauty of the app is also that it takes in consideration the differences between restaurants with vegan or vegetarian offers, restaurants that are vegan and vegetarian friendly and the ones that are 100% vegan that very often accommodate people that are also gluten-free, soy free, etc. I’m happy that I’ve been using it for a year now and I’ll keep using it because it rocks !!!
EmeraldCityGurl - Just use Google, honestly it’s way better
In response to Happy Cow’s response: You suggest “lowering your standards” and adding establishments that only offer “a few” vegan friendly options - excuse me but I thought the purpose of this app was to guide us vegans to restaurants that have vegan friendly options, even if it’s only “a few.” Maybe I misunderstood the premise of this app? I don’t think so. And I tried adding the place we ate at in Ely, NV and the website made me feel like it wasn’t appropriate to add it so I didn’t. Stupid questions like “are you SURE they have more than a few vegan options?” No, I’m not sure but I’d still like other vegans to know they can get a pizza there if they’d like. Google can do that, too. Google all the way. (Original review:)This used to be a great and helpful app for finding vegan food nearby - when I was in Seattle. Now, not so much. A month ago I went on the road and was fully expecting this app to help guide me to vegan friendly establishments. That has not been the case. For example, I’m sitting in Ely, Nevada right now and when I search in Happy Cow one restaurant pops up and it’s closed. However, when I search in google I found a pizza joint, a Mexican restaurant and a couple other places that offer vegan friendly options. I was borderline angry when I discovered that because I paid for this stupid app. I’m on the road 100% of the time and I’d suggest just using google and not waste your money on this app.
Internalzebrapower - A must have for any vegan/vegetarian.
Upon going vegan I chose not to purchase this app due to the higher than average price, but since then I have had many great meals thanks to this app which makes it well worth the cost. The app has some issues that need to be worked upon and the kind developer team has informed me that they are aware of them and are doing their best to integrate them.
I recommend this app to anyone who is traveling or living in a metropolitan area where there may be vegan/vegetarian restaurants unknown to them. For those who reside in the suburbs and don’t travel I recommend you use the free website to see what types of options there are around you at one time. I wish there were vegan/veg restaurants everywhere but that is not always the case so check the website first.
I hope that the happy cow community grows because for now I use happy cow to locate the restaurant but google to see the reviews and photos. If a rest isn’t on happy cow has a large number of positive reviews and photos it’s bound to be a home run of a a meal.
Xmrfigx - Best resource for finding veg-friendly restaurants
Someone recommended this to me when I first went vegan a few years back. It had been less than a month and I was just starting to feel that I wouldn’t be able to do it because I missed eating out with the family. We met this guy in front of the one vegan restaurant I managed to find by just trying to Google a bunch of stuff and when I told him what I went through, he told me about the app and I have been an avid user since! I have used it to plan trips because you can save an itinerary of places you want to visit beforehand and it’s really easy to add restaurants that you may find on your own. If you use the app I encourage you to leave reviews and add restaurants because that’s how the information grows. It is definitely worth the download!
*As of Aug 2018, the app has been redesigned and looks great! The ability to filter by restaurant type directly from the main page is a welcome new addition!
Legotti - Helpful Tool
- Appreciate the sorting options. Made it a lot less hard to identify vegetarian options. Appreciate most the ability to remove chain restaurants on top of all the sorting options. - Would prefer a more minimalist app icon on my screen to the cartoon cow drawn in that specific children’s show style. Doesn’t look great mashed up against other app icons. Not relevant to app function though, just means I relegate the app to a back page. - Regarding the common complaint I’m reading about 5 stars not being permitted for non vegan restaurants and vegan restaurants not being permitted 1 star - you could simply asterisk it by color-coding the 5th or 1st star outside your preferred system. More information is better for consumers. I want to know if a vegan restaurant is garbage but works for emergencies, cause I’d rather give my money to the legitimate 2 star vegan restaurant over the 1 star if given choice. They’re more deserving.
LG Happy Vegan - Great tool for vegan gastronomes
My wife and I travel a lot for business. As vegans we really appreciate the recent surge in plant-based food options available at nearly every restaurant. When we travel we use this app allows to quickly find what vegan food is available nearby. We particularly like to find and support restaurants that have committed to be 100% plant-based, especially those that are “best of class”. We love finding gourmet vegan both in the high end restaurant and those surprises at some walk-ups and cafes. We often share these findings with our non-vegan friends who enjoy great food that happens to be plant-based. Sometimes a google search will find places that are not listed in HappyCow yet but I think the is a sign of how quickly this genre of food is growing. The HappyCow community does a great job of catching these and then updating the database.
Miraj Lee Saxton - Amazing for vegans & vegitarians Works Globally
I used this app to locate vegan food places all over the world. From when I am just going out to find local vegan locations to planning my vacations to preview the areas with vegan options. There is also a setting in search that helps you find natural stores. I can’t even begin to tell you how this app has saved me again and again. As a vegan you often try to pre plan but every so often you get caught in a situation where you need to eat something and have no idea where there is a vegan place to eat. This is a must have for any vegan or vegetarian. This app allows you to essentially be empowered to always plan out even your vacations search food places save them as a destination so you can visit the ones interested when you arrive. This is why I have given it 5 stars. It is the best app ever. 😀
Ajaib is All-Emporer - perfect app
As a strict lacto-vegetarian for many years (the most common type of vegetarian diet globally), I have been using HappyCow for several years and always find it brilliant. I have used it on both coasts, the Midwest and Texas, Hawaii, Australia and extensively in various regions of Japan rural and urban and it has saved me many a time. Some places have no/few vegetarian places, that is a great heads up too (just a reality, not the app’s fault). Of course we can use common sense and search engines and expand the search in those cases. I feel the app and developers perfectly prioritize strictly vegetarian/vegan places while also noting great options in places that also serve meat. I agree with five stars as a set-aside for strictly vegetarian/vegan places, as the app is meant for those seeking to eat vegetarian/vegan. This app is wonderful seva (service), please continue.
Ccc cccvvv - This app is amazing worldwide
I live in Los Angeles but love to travel and had to travel for work. From New York to little towns around the U.S. to Iceland to Amsterdam to England, HappyCow has been invaluable. My boyfriend and I are vegan and even locally HappyCow has introduced me to places that I never knew of, and probably would never know of but for them. We have discovered so many little gems through HappyCow.
The app has been super easy to use, you literally just put in your location and then actual reviews and photos from actual patrons come up. I love adding restaurants that I discover.
Anyhow, thought they deserve a shout out because they have surpassed every other app and platform that I have used to try to find places to eat around the world.
[J_C]* - Only worth it if free
As a vegan I like supporting vegan products, but this app is not worth even $.99... the selection is poor and only limited to places that are 100% vegan. I want to find places I can eat and don’t want to be controlled by the developer’s filtered choices. Many restaurant in my area that are vegan friendly, but only like 7-8 within 25-30 mile radios (I live in the currently 4th largest metropolis area of US).
I went to find by the map and when used the selected area, the map zoomed in (glitch) and gives me the result just for small selection.
I hate the fact that I can’t get my money back!! I paid $3.99 thinking it was a good app as I usually get if I pay more than $1... can’t believe that Peta recommended this app.
Do not purchase until they improve their database and bugs. I see plenty of options in TripAdvisor and Yelp in my area. This app is only worth if it is free at the moment, and even then TripAdvisor or Yelp provides more options and includes vegan friendly places.
Btw - not supporting restaurants that are vegan friendly and offer 100% vegan options in their menu without having to modify the order, is not supporting restaurants management that are being open minded and value our life style.
Also it makes our cause easier when you can share with non-vegans without having to inconvenience anyone.
The more people order the offered options, the larger will be the vegan menu. Then, demand will grow when the options are available (more vegans).
Don Forman - Great app!
This is a great app to find vegan restaurants. I hear people complain about this app tho saying it does not have much and would rather use other apps. Well they do name streets after people like them. ONE WAY>>> Places don’t magical appear on Happy Cow. The users need to help out by adding places and pictures. BTW, how do you think places show up on other sites? HC has made it easier in the last couple years. Yeah, they have a couple stupid pop ups asking if a place serves animal products, then asks again, are you sure. It’s annoying but if your serious about adding a place just go with it. I’ve used this app all over the world and found some great restaurants. I also add places all the time.
Majoylind - Good idea, poor execution
I was very excited to get this app. I live in the middle of the Midwest in a college town, and didn’t know if there were any vegan options near me. Looking at the list on the app, I was pleased to see quite a few options, and I had hope.
But as I started making plans with friends and them asking the age old question of “can you eat here?” I found the app almost no help. So many restaurants in my area have vegan options or are vegan friendly, but aren’t listed in the search results. I tried to add one of them, and was discouraged by how big of a pain it is to add a place. I’m all for being thorough when listing restaurants, but you have to add every single menu item that is or could be made vegan, as well as answer way too many questions about willingness to accommodate.
All of this is to say that I paid for an app I don’t use because the list of vegan restaurants is outdated. Pretty disappointed.
Purerenegade - 26 year vegan use this app all over the world
I’m a 26 year vegan / 15 year raw vegan and lifetime performing artist who tours all over the world and this app is everything. I’ve used it in Spain, Japan, Thailand, Switzerland, Italy, Costa Rica and so much more. I’ve certainly used it in all 50 states. And surprisingly, I use it regularly in my home city, Los Angeles, the world mecca of vegan food just to see what new places pop up. They show up on Happy Cow first. Of course the app is only as good as its community reviews, so I always try to upload a photo and short review where I go - especially if it’s a small town. It’s easy to use and through the photos and reviews, you can really tell what a place is going to be like before you make the trek there. Support!
Shanpelle - Phenomenal resource for veg-friendly options
I was initially hesitant to purchase this app due to it not being free (I’m cheap when it comes to app purchasing), but upon downloading it, I could not be happier. Especially when visiting new and unfamiliar locations, I have used this app to find restaurants able to accommodate my dietary choices.
Secondly, I really appreciate the ability to add reviews to the locations – both pros and cons – and the ease of adding photographs of the restaurants. (Venue is important!)
Third, I admit that I was annoyed when I noticed that multiple restaurants offering veg options were not listed on the HappyCow app; however, I decided that I could change that by adding them myself. Since then, I have found this app the greatest resource for me because it engenders and cultivates a community who is collectively trying to make eating veg an easier and more delightful experience.
Lastly, I’m extremely thankful for this app and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to try veg, already veg, or simply interested in seeing veg options throughout their area.
AlexT2019 - I really wanted to like this, I really did
I live in a town with an amazing food culture, and tons of veggie friendly businesses.
Even with these elements, HappyCow is inconvenient at best. There is a breakdown of dietary levels and some great reviews, but you have to go to a different section “filter” to refine a search
If you are in the mood for a certain place, you have to take additional steps to find it, unfortunately, competitors like Yelp work better for my family, (which I don’t necessarily like, but reliability and functionality is key for an app for us).
Recently, Happy Cow reached out to me for feedback, and I attempted to give some constructive feedback to help make the tool better. I received back an email basically stating, “well you are just doing it wrong”. Yeah I do agree, I was probably doing it wrong. However, if in this day and age, someone interacts with your app and has trouble using it, then perhaps there may be room for improvement. Unfortunately, I don’t have time to figure out how to use every app I use, so my default is to not use those apps that seem abstract.
I really want to support Happy Cow, it just is more trouble than it is worth for me. Hopefully they are able to address their limitations objectively, as I am appreciative of their mission.
Kathryn speaks - This app was a lifesaver in Italy!
We just returned from a 10 day tour in Italy and this app was a lifesaver!! We were able to search out vegan restaurants in Rome, Tuscany and Venice!! We ate like kings and everything was so easy to find! Thank goddess for this app! In the land of dried meats oil and cheeses we found fresh and savory selections in every town we visited! This app was so worth the price! We use it all the time!! Thank you Happy Cow! My only request/feedback is that you add “Whole Food Plant Based” or “WFPB” as one of your dietary label choices, pretty please🙏🏻 I’ve selected Herbivore but would appreciate the correct title to be available for those who are WFPB, which many are for health reasons.
Luna1437 - Cool concept but..
There are tons of places with vegan options around me that are not on the app. The app is showing me that I live in a dead zone for vegan options, which is kind of true but the app is still missing a lot.
Edit: I appreciate the developer response, but it seems like this app is not what I was looking for. It seems like it is not geared towards those of us who are having difficulty finding restaurants with ANY vegan options, but instead for people who are surrounded by vegan and vegetarian restaurants and just need help choosing which one.
Disappointing, because I am aware of the one all-vegan restaurant in my town, but I wouldn’t necessarily know which places would have a vegan item or two on their menu. It seems this app would be helpful if you lived in a large, vegan-friendly city.
Edit 2: after reading the other reviews, it looks like they’re no longer allowing submissions for restaurants that serve meat? That would explain why nothing was coming up for me. If this is true, that completely erases the functionality of the app in my mind. Not all of us have the luxury of getting to eat at all vegan and vegetarian restaurants! Sad.
GraceLorraine - Excellent Investment
The convenience is priceless! As in, it’s worth a LOT more money than is charged, just to find exclusively vegan dining establishments—and they also list so much more, even farmers’ markets. I recall my last pre-vegan roommate asking me get “heartburn” pills for him, which he took nearly every day; they were expensive. For anyone regularly taking antacids because of meat eating, I’d highly suggest buying the app to find all-vegan restaurants once in a while—you can go in, order anything on the menu, and probably not need to take any pills! There are so many reviews to help you choose, especially by vegans.... Get out and live a little!
MahlyC - Don’t leave home without it!
I’ve never felt strongly enough about an app before to bother rating it. We rely on this wherever we go - even in Europe. I love the “veg options” feature because we have a vegan, a lacto-ovo and two omnivores who prefer meat. So we’re able to find places fit for everyone.
We use the app to plan our sightseeing schedule so we’re close to something good at mealtime. Options include grocery stores, so whether we’re with family in Frankfurt or AirBNB in the middle of nowhere New Hampshire, we know where to go. Love that you can see what’s open and easily click for directions.
K. Taksier - Helpful but rating system is misleading
You can only give dedicated vegan restaurants five stars. I think this is misleading. We had an unforgettable meal at a restaurant that also serves animal products. The cover of the menu advertised vegan options, which were extensive. The staff was knowledgeable. And we were able to eat outside with our dogs. I would hate to discourage vegans from patronizing such establishments if they only see four stars. We need to bring these restaurants our business so they continue to see the benefit of catering to vegan diners. Especially when they’re in small towns with few options.
Blukas - Missing features
It’s nice to get a social side of plant-forward diets, and the following for the app has really made it a great resource for finding those places.
* Update based on developer’s second response:
I appreciate your time to explain the intention behind the app. I think that others could benefit by understanding that you want to highlight places that are *purposely* providing plant-based options. I recommend you put that in the app’s description. As it stands, it seems like you’re trying to advertise your service as a yelp-for-vegans; which is why I was confused.
Dmagne27 - Needs improvement!
Ok I get how valuable this information is catering to vegan / vegetarians. The problem is if I’m paying $3.99, I expect the data to be reliable. The price point is not the issue but the fact that the end result is the opposite of the value I expect out of it. My girlfriend is vegan and I bought the app to use in Paris and, no exaggeration, three places in half a day were closed or had no vegan food left. I also noticed places that had some options that aren’t listed. That said, I think they should reconsider making this app free so people can share the info that improves the data quality being offered. At some point, going around is time consuming, exhausting, and expensive. I’d like for you to succeed but you need to make some changes pronto.
Pwdmom - Not really a restaurant.
This place looks as if it is barely hanging onto life. Without a doubt, one has to be committed to eating there as it is extremely difficult to find. In an almost totally vacant shopping center it is only one of a few occupied stores. The food is expensive for vegan (and yes I’m vegan) but isn’t adequately outstanding to warrant the prices. It seems that the place is held together by one employee. As you enter the restaurant there is a podium where you place your order and then you wait outside if you like but no indoor seating and only a couple of tables outside.
While you wait the person who took your order disappears, probably to microwave the food order, and then returns to deliver or serve the food. My recommendation is give it a miss and look elsewhere.
Ckorss - 11/10
I tried this app a while ago, and I didn’t like it too much because there were a few issues with it at the time. But, I recently went vegan and had a hard time finding places that would suit my diet. Luckily, I decided to give this app a second chance, and I’m glad I did! Every issue has been fixed, and I love it now! I don’t travel much, but it has helped me find new places to eat in a town that I thought I knew like the back of my hand. When I do travel, the first thing I check is my app to see where I can eat- it’s a lifesaver!
Tried to make it work. - Plant Based No-Oil options
The happy cow app has been very helpful to my wife and I under our new lifestyle of plant-based know oil living. We are wondering if you could add a feature or filter for establishments that are willing to serve a plant-based know oil option. Very difficult to find places that have it on the menu. We recently found a great one near JFK Airport in New York City thanks to your app. We were disappointed that there is no way to identify such accommodating establishments with your app.
The numbers behind Dr. Collin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn continue to grow exponentially. We hope you can serve this growing group of followers with your wonderful app.
Landdolphin - BEST VEGAN RESOURCE EVER
I have been using this app ever since I went vegan three years ago. It shows you all the vegan-friendly restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores in an area. Whenever I go on a trip, I use this app to find vegan food places, and it has been indispensable for locating AMAZING places. I have never had a poor experience at any of the many places I’ve visited thanks to this app. Not all of the places are strictly vegan, but that’s ok, because they still have vegan options. Also, the profiles of the places tell you if it’s “vegetarian,” “vegan,” or “veg-friendly.”
I'mSabai - Best app for vegan and vegetarian travelers!!
My husband and I love this app!! We love to travel around the world and every place we go there are vegan options for us thanks to HappyCow.. we use this app and TripAdvisor to strategically find hotels close to vegan restaurants... I also found one time a vegan bed and breakfast in the FL Keys and I took my husband there for birthday ... I don't compare this app to yelp because in Yelp I don't trust if the place is complete vegan or not.. maybe it's me, but happy cow was created with a different mission compared to Yelp.. hope this review helps! Totally worth the $4!!
XNDR - Indispensable app for any vegan / veg
I rarely write app reviews but this app has truly been a life saver countless times on countless trips. Whenever I am in a new city, country or continent HappyCow is among my most used apps. It saves you a tremendous amount of time by locating nearby restaurants, shop, grocers and many other categories that cater to vegans or vegetarians. Then, each place you find has honest, trustworthy reviews from other vegans. Not like Yelp reviews, where they are completely untrustworthy. This app is WELL worth it’s small asking price. Thank you HappyCow!
Libbylooloo - Love this app.
Being vegan can be challenging when eating out but this app helps so much.
Delighted to find even when I am visiting China it’s still offering suggestions. I guess it’s only as good as the people who use it so I must remember to keep adding and making reviews as we all should do. It’s what its all about helping each other along .
I tell all my vegan and none vegan friends about this, times are changing and it’s amazing people who aren’t vegan will know someone who is so keep spreading the world about this app it’s such a brilliant app.
PetroneR - Inaccurate ratings
Will change to a higher rating if they allow me to rate vegan restaurants with 1 star and non vegan restaurants as 5 star. It is not entirely accurate the quality of restaurants if they are already biased based on if they are fully vegan or not. I have been to restaurants with incredible food and staff that have a couple of non vegan options that are labeled and I have been to terrible vegan restaurants in terms of quality and staff that deserve 1 star but the app won’t let me truly rate them due to being fully vegan or not. The labels already let us know if it is a fully vegan restaurant or not that we do not need to give incorrect star amounts to try to boost vegan restaurants and decrease non vegan restaurants with vegan options.
Debaser78 - Lifesaver
I was born and raised a strict vegetarian and I travel a lot for work. I’ve been using happy cow for 10 years now, and this app has changed my life. I used to go overseas (Korea/Japan/China) and was completely lost when it came to finding food. I’d be lucky to go on a trip and have some bread and water to eat. Happycow has literally changed my life. Now I can go alllllmosssst anywhere and be able to find a great meal.
I don’t think I’ve been to a city in the last 4 years where happycow didn’t have listings.
This is awesome.
EthanM2017 - Great resource with dumb rating rules
I love having the resource but the rating system is bad. If a place isn’t fully vegan it can only get a 4 star. Why punish people for trying? If a place is fully vegan, it has to get a two star minimum. I had the worst meal of my life and couldn’t give it one star. This leads to misrepresented ratings and bad experiences. A better practice would be to allow people to rating places fairly and add a gold cow or something for full vegan places that you can filter on if you so desire. These places can even show up first by default in the sorting. Overall a good resource with bad rules.
FIXTHISALREADY - Best Food App if You Travel!
I was a little deterred by the $4 cost for an app, but it was more than worth it to plan my Japan trip!! I’m so floored by how amazing this app is and it’ll also help me find places around town easier as well. My only complaint is that it seems to have recently changed from a 4-star max rating to 5-star (?), so all the reviews I’m seeing for food in Tokyo mention something along the lines of “I wish there were more than 4 stars to give”, so I feel like ratings should be adjusted.
Gggikkgdx - Fed in Europe
Finding vegan food while traveling through Europe was a struggle until I found happy cow! I knew of it from the states, I’d been to a vegan food festival and got handed a little sticker. Navigating vegan food in LA is a breeze but Europe was a challenge. I had pasta and red sauce every day until I reinstalled my happy cow and was thrilled to find all these ultra hip, healthy and yummy vegan restaurants that had been right under my nose! Can’t recommend this enough, do not get stuck eating pasta every meal!
Bee-Ten - Great for road warriors
I haves used this app around the world to discover great restaurants often in walking distance. Truly awesome.
One tip: call ahead to verify a restaurant is open or still operating. Restaurants change their hours often and there’s a lot of turnover in the business. If you do find info is out of date, take the time to update in the app or on the website.
And unlike a lot of apps, it is actively developed with frequent updates by a developer that takes feedback well.
Kjasdfaaaaat7894 - Excellent for finding vegan options easily
Comes up and tells you if it’s open or if it’s opening soon so you know which ones might be opening within 30 minutes to an hour. If it’s restaurants are not familiar with you might still have to contact during Covid to make sure whether or not they have dine in or only delivery or take out options. But it gives a lot of options so I use it a lot. Love it!!!
CrazyKitkat3 - Favorite App
This app has been a savior for me when traveling. It gives me recommendations of vegan-friendly places that I would not have known of otherwise, based on my location. It has made it much easier for me to find places that cater to me, taking the pressure of me when I’m a new place. I even use it in my hometown to see what new restaurants have popped up. MUCH more effective than google-searching for places and definitely more reliable. I can’t explain how much I value this app.
Sheilaxvx - Best travel buddy... home and abroad
I love to travel. I LOVE that no matter where I go, happy cow is reliable in helping me track down vegan options. I travel 3-4 days a week and I’ve found the best restaurants in the middle of nowhere. The reviews are honest and done by actual vegans and vegetarians, not just someone guessing what veg people might eat. Sorting by open now and distance makes this app really versatile. Happy it’s been around as long as it has, and the reviews and options continue to grow with it.
Sunnydays365 - Lackluster Experience So Far
I love vegan for so many reasons. My top three being compassion, my health, and the environmental impact. This app is great for finding finding strictly vegan restaurants. It’s usefulness diminishes as you move towards more inclusive options. For instance, in Reno there is a breakfast place called Two Chicks that has an amazing vegan skillet and delicious vegan pancakes, but many meat options too. They don’t make the list.
The app doesn’t allow you to search for a particular restaurant. I’d also like to sort by meal (breakfast, lunch, Italian, Mexican, etc.).
Lastly, you cannot rate a restaurant five stars if they aren’t strictly vegan. They have a category for “veg-options”, why not allow me to give a place with veg options five stars? Seems discriminate.
I hope the app continues to develop, and I’m happy to contribute my $4 to the cause, but at this time I do not recommend it as a one stop shop to find vegan food in your area. I still find yelp and google more useful.
Scrap Diva Retreats - Best App 4 Vegan & Vegetarians
I’ve been a vegetarian my whole life and found this app about 10 years ago. It is the absolute best app. I use it whenever I travel to find the best vegan restaurants. I’m on my second year of becoming vegan and this app helped me transition. I’ve loved almost every place I’ve tried. This community has great taste in restaurants and pretty much only post 4 and 5 star restaurants. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to eat healthier!
Curtis Schmitt - A Must-Buy For Vegans
Dining out was a lot easier when I was vegetarian but now that I’m vegan it’s simply too time-consuming to sift through Yelp and Google reviews to figure out 1. If a restaurant actually serves any vegan dishes and 2. how good those vegan dishes are.
You know on Happy Cow that the reviews are by fellow vegans and vegetarians so they more accurately predict the experience as opposed to restaurants receiving many five star ratings for their steak and other animal flesh based dishes, while their veg options are just afterthoughts.
Bleek300 - *****APP OF THE YEAR*****
I travel LOTSSSSS for the government. Finding food around the county and world was hard. Most days I would either starve or eat very little because there is NO WAY for me to google search or drive around asking for Vegan restaurants, until now. Eating is a basic necessity. Us vegans don’t always have the option for food in remote locations. Happy Cow has made my life much easier and given me more options that I would most likely never have discovered. THANK YOU!!! -Navy Chief⚓️
London Ladd - Such a great app
There’s something really strengthening to have this app when traveling. I’m pretty aware of what is near me so I don’t have to look up much locally unless I’m curious to try something that might be new. But when out and about on an adventure elsewhere this is super helpful! Especially since most of my family isn’t vegan I can also find places that they might enjoy but have great options for myself. Whoever made this app is genius. Thank you!
E.D.West - Only accepting 100% vegan restaurants? Just use Google maps
Tried to add a listing but was annoyed to see that “due to overwhelming number of submissions only 100% vegan listings are being accepted” at the moment. That’s not the point of the app for me. The obviously vegan spots I can find on google or yelp. What I use HappyCow for is finding places that you might not otherwise know have vegan options: places that aren’t 100% vegan!! If you’re overloaded on moderation, just make the queue longer. Don’t cut out like 95% of possible submissions. People are going to forget and they won’t come back later to add them.
Bob.Aerofun - Vegan Traveler’s Aide
We find Happy Cow very helpful while traveling - to find restaurants that provide good vegan food. We find that even the Veg Friendly restaurants almost always can make one or more of their options vegan when asked. These options are so so much better than the ones when you ask for vegan and they don’t know what that means. Good job Happy Cow. I know you’re growing fast and that must bring challenges. Keep up the good work.
Vegankunt - super cool but needs tweaking
The app is super easy to use and very helpful, but I wish it were more polished! Literally, every uploaded picture looks grainy (is it because of the watermark?) and something as seemingly useful as a menu photo ends up being totally useless, and I have to either rely on a website that‘s hopefully updated or Yelp. It‘d also be nice if pictures were separated categorically: menu, food, drink, inside, outside. This helps me get a better understanding of a spot and not weed through blurry pictures.
Spike&midnight - The Food is excellent!
You must try the veggie Black Bean Burger!! The Bun melts in your mouth literally ! It’s so soft and the black bean patty tastes very fresh compared to other restaurants that use too much grease. They have Vegan mayonnaise just make sure you ask for it. If you’re vegetarian try the corn bread !! The only thing I wish this restaurant had is some ambience/ background music to give it more of a restaurant feel.. Also it’s not open on certain days. Don’t sleep on it !
Trummerflute - Don’t Leave home without it!
I have traveled around the world, to Europe, Asia, Australia, South America, and I’m planning a trip to Africa. In each case, I have found a HappyCow app to be indispensable in planning exciting and healthy eating on the road. I trust the reviews, they are always spot on. I have easily added new-found gems to the collection (somewhat easier on the website), and made updates to existing restaurants. I’m very grateful for the HappyCow community!
Sun Stars - Great app for finding vegan restaurants.
But if you’re wanting to look up something specific, you need to make sure you don’t leave off a word. Say a restaurant’s name starts with “the”, if you leave off the “the” it just won’t show up at all. You can’t just search a keyword either, if you only remember part of a restaurant’s name. It’s frustrating and I hope they change it! Besides that it’s a perfect app for finding something to eat.
Stephsoap - Love this app!!
Super easy and fun to use! Its great to use in my home city or when I'm traveling. I love how it has labels for full vegan vs veg options available, etc. it makes it super helpful! This is my go-to whenever I'm traveling and researching where to eat or where I could eat in a pinch if needed. Love the member program, its so fun to share my experiences, see others reviews and connect with other vegans!

MrMcBlaster - Makes travel as a vegan stress free
This app has been a life saver travelling across Japan. As some of you probably know it can be very time consuming trying to hunt down vegan food in foreign countries, throw in that madness they call kanji and you’ve got yourself a real struggle on your hands to stay fed. Every place I’ve tried on the app has been where it says, open when it says, and serving what it says. Well done to whatever genius made this app happen, you’ve made this holiday so much better for us. I’ll use this app everywhere I go for the rest of my life. To a non-vegan it may seem a simple thing to eat abroad but as vegans we can waste a lot of valuable holiday time reading endless menus.....not any more!! Thank you!
Francois P., Australia - Couldn’t travel without it!
Travelled EU for 5 months and the Happy cow app was my go to app to find places I could eat vegan. Easy to use, clear, comprehensive. Photos and comments usually reflect what to expect and were a good guide for us to find some gems of restaurants.
Only gap is that it was hard to reconcile opening hours or even when places were closed (happened a couple of times we show up when it says it’s opened yet the place is closed - not sure it’s happy cow’s fault though)
As a plant-based eater, this app has become my No 1 resource! Thanks guys and keep up the good work!
Mel_Mou - A life saver!
I recently travelled to Japan. Many people I knew who had been there warned me that it was nearly impossible to be vegan, or even vegetarian. Those people clearly didn’t have Happy Cow. It took a bit more effort to find places and I probably didn’t have the “authentic Japanese food experience”. However, I was surprised at how many vegan restaurants there were around. I got to try some beautiful plant based food, and experience the vegan movement in a different culture. This app made my holiday so much easier and created some wonderful eating memories I will never forget. Thank you!
Lbrf - Makes travelling super easy
This app was a life saver in Japan. I was travelling there expecting to eat super basic/bland foods, and I probably would have if it wasn’t for this app. We were super busy in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, so whenever we had a quick break I could just hit the ‘vegan restaurants nearby’ button and there was always options with really precise instructions on the vegan options or what modifications you had to make. And it’s even handy to use at home in Australia too :)
Hannah Shania - Awesome app
This is perfect comes up with vegan restaurants and also restaurants that have vegan options. It also has vegetarian options. And it works worldwide 🌱 bonus it works overseas too so it was very helpful. I recommend this app to anyone who’s vegan or vegetarian.
I love the point system too- very handy, I downloaded the app years ago and I will use it as long as it runs. 😍
VickiMITCH - Best vegan restaurant finder!
I never thought I would need an app like this but it has helped so so much when travelling and looking for vegan food, even in Brazil where vegan foods are scarce. I am glad I got this app, well worth the money! Can’t wait to see how the app grows and continues to showcase vegan foods for others to find and experience. It is also very inclusive for other allergies etc not just vegan.
M@rtym - Wherever you are - you can leave happy cows
I’ve been using the website for ages which is fine; but the Happy Cow App is Alice saver. On road trips around Australia - it helps you decide which towns to check out - and even makes some a destination in itself!
Would be great to separate out “vegan treats for breakfast/coffee” from the restaurant focused listings...
JackLoRusso - Makes vegan travel easy
It's like having a knowledgeable vegan friend in every city you're in. We've used it all over the world and found amazing places because of it. App is perfect, better than using the website. plus why not support the great work they are doing! Thanks happy cow <3
Aquadragon's - Very Helpful App
I downloaded this app an hour ago and I've already found a good number of vegan places to try out around where I'm staying for the next two weeks. Such a bonus because it can be difficult finding good options
Milnesco - The most useful app I have
I use HappyCow routinely as I travel and to find vegan restaurants, cafes and businesses locally. It saves time, and provides reassurance through the reviews. I have used many similar apps but keep coming back to HappyCow because it is more comprehensive and easy to use.
Sezbakes - So useful
This app has been incredibly helpful whilst travelling around south and Central America. Some of the best food we've had on the 8+ month trip has come from recommendations from this app! Love reading people's reviews and finding new healthy vegan places to eat around the world!
Vegan-Nik - ESSENTIAL TRAVEL TOOL
I’ve been using Happy Cow for 10 years.
I’ve used it all thru Europe, Australia and Indonesia. It’s an invaluable tool for those of us who choose to eat a cruelty free diet.
Definitely worth the purchase.
Just remember to update with new finds and reviews!!
Jasperzee - Great for local and travelling
Use this app so often when I need help finding food close by that is plant based. Was exceptionally helpful on a recent trip to Japan - Hakuba and Tokyo, and I love seeing more places showing in my local city. Love telling people about this app
Mummymummymummymummy - Perfect in finding vegan eats in different countries and your own.
I couldn’t believe how this app existed and I never knew. It’s made searching for vegan places so much easier. I’m planning a trip to Bali soon and I know where to stay in close proximity to eats. Amazing.
Netgila - Fantastic app - super fantastic when traveling!
Great to find nearby veg/vegan meal options.
Have made some great food discoveries with this app.
Without the app we would have completed missed the great food and would have been stuck eating mixed veggies with rice or noodles : ).
Sharee1979 - Every traveling vegans must have app!
I travel a lot, Happy Cow is my ‘go to’ each time I visit a new town or city. It genuinely makes my life so much easier not having to google and research where to go, it’s all in one easy to use app.
I recommend it to anyone who likes to travel and eat 😃
Didiisbored - Essential for travelling vegans
This has been a life safer whole travelling and has saved as a lot of time. I specially appreciate the pictures and reviews left by other users and i try and do the same
BodyRelate - Supporting life-affirming travelling ☺️
Allows ease and convenient access to a range of healthful food options while transitioning to and through new and uncertain areas of the world..
- Can be a way to meet interesting folk too.
Aye_cee - Life Saving for Vegans
Not only has this app helped me find seriously hard to find vegan stores in my local city of Newcastle, Australia, it has helped immensely in my travels over the last 12 months to New York City and Bali, Indonesia.
Ryan Kingy - Must have any for any vegans
This app has got me out of trouble so many times and shows you can find vegan options were ever you go.
Rosegum - Not as good as it was
This used to be a good app. It isn’t user friendly now, shows too many burger bars and bakeries and requires lots of fiddling in settings to get to what it used to have as its core offering - vegan restaurants. Sadly it’s no longer the go to support that it was.
G w tgf - Frustration
I have been trying to use the application for long time and most of the times it’s unreliable and frustrating
Businesses sometimes closed down or operating hours isn’t accurate with outdated and misleading information
I would say goole” vegan restaurant/shop near me” would be more reliable than happy cow :(
Beau-Boy - Really helpful
As a new vegan this app made finding places to eat super easy. Couldn’t recommend it enough
Dimples P - A time saver
As a new vegan it has been a challenge to find vegan friendly places on google. This app makes my life easier.

Unfitguru - Most helpful app
I love my Happy Cow app - it’s been sooo useful locally in Australia, but also traveling in Europe. Literally couldn’t live without this app. Great job to the team behind Happy Cow 🐮🌈💜
Lmerriganturner - Wish I could get a refund.
Same if not less information than google maps and irrelevant restaurant suggestions. Used the app in both the USA and Australia and every time google maps came up with better, clearer results with more restaurants and vegan businesses. Just use google this app is a waste of time, I want a refund.
Mesheilab - Top app 👍👍
What a great little app this is - makes it so easy to eat out with no time wasted looking around for choices 🙂
88cbear - Must have
This app makes being vegan away from home much smoother! No one wants a Hangry vegan
Hahahahashshsjxhxis - Constantly crashes
I can't even search nearby restaurants without this app crashing on me. I really want to use it for my upcoming trip for Japan but I can't even search any restaurants without the app just closing when I hit search.. Very disappointing considering I paid $6 for this app and can't even use it
Carlyjane69 - Very useful app
So handy to have to look up vegetarian and vegan food while traveling. A total must have!

Big Nute - Happy Wandering Vegan
Initially I was not so impressed but have since found some wonderful vegan options that I would not have been aware of without the app’. The opening times are very informative. There are of course options available not outlined in the app’ but it is a great place to start.

Hope you find your vibe here🤟
JB021 - Gotta support small business
I frequented this place a ton! Such an amazing owner. Mo is there all the time cranking out great custom ice kream and smiles. They are open late and always clean the anti griddle before they make your vegan dessert.
Check this place out! He doesn’t disappoint.
L&GCannabee - Thanks
This is the most useful app, next to my banking, that I have ever used. I wish I found it sooner. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

Thanks to Happy Cow we have found some of the best places to eat vegan and GF. Love this app!
Kevyb87 - Great app for veggie eaters
I’m a vegan and this app has helped me tremendously on my way through Mexico to my new home. Excellent app!
Lizard queen 1 - Hate being forced to write so much
I would love to just give a star rating on restaurants that already have a review- I should not be forced to repeat it again-and have a minimum character limit- makes me avoid posting- I also don’t like the way you need to pick the features of a place and %50 vegan is the only option- most places with vegan options are not %50- I am pleased if I can get more than a salad - seems a bit overkill
Aekorps - Ugly but useful
“Hey, I got it, instead of actually valuing good design and paying someone skilled, we’ll just ask our community to fix our brand for free.”
The app’s fine. I just wish the purple tomato cow logo and all UI wasn’t hideous. I only use it because the data is useful. They really need to hire a good designer to overhaul the look. I don’t drive a car only for the engine. I also drive it because it looks good. Any app on a platform as well designed as iPhone/iOS should understand this. Any good tool is a harmony of design and engineering. This app only has half of that puzzle. Thus I gave it a half rating. I would give it 2.5 if I could.
Julieritalalonde - Just perfect
Great app to find vegan/vegetarian shops and restaurants near you. The fact that you can see and leave reviews is also quite useful. Thank you so much for making this app and building such a great community ;)
Antant50 - Best vegan food app around!
97245555 - Nothing in my area is marked
Bought this app to find new places with vegan options in my area but there is absolutely nothing listed for 12 km even though I know of 10+ restaurants with vegan options. Very disappointed and would like a refund.
MyOwnVegan - Best app for vegans !!!
Happy Cow app, it’s incredible for any vegans internationally that are travelling also to see what their vegan places or options are! Definitely recommend this app for my vegan siblings.
DodoanddorY1! - Life changing!
I am not sure how I lived before this app. As a vegan I remember using google maps for half a year and that was awful! This is by far the best app ever 🤩

ACDC ANGUS - Vegan restaurants
Happy cow is an awesome fantastic app. We have used it all over the World in Australia, New Zealand, U.S., Canada, and directs us to the closest vegan or vegetarian restaurants starting with the closest one to us. I’ve shared it with many people that are vegan/vegetarian or transitioning. Highly recommended

Why can’t I download it back?
Debrakadabra - Best App
My husband and I have so much fun using this app when travelling to look for awesome vegan restaurants. It always makes our trips.
Thank you Happy Cow!!!
CDMflyer - I’d be lost without Happy Cow
I travel for a living and use Happy Cow everywhere I go. It makes it so easy to find plant-based food without extensive research. The reviews are an excellent way to determine if a location serves food to your particular taste as well. Good job Happy Cow!
Dancecrazy3 - OMG! What a vegan restaurant!
Met friends at VHC for the first time. The menu and food is amazing. Doug the server was very friendly, informative with an entertaining personality. This place has a great setup where if you just want to get together with friends for drinks there’s a bar and tables. However being plant based I can’t say enough great things about this place. They even have entertainment Monday,Thursday with a comedian on Saturdays.
Agill369 - Amazing
Incredibly helpful especially when traveling
((( Shallow Grave ))) - Wow!
This is a time saver and oh so useful! When me and my family are out and about it’s always been difficult to find healthy food on the go. Now it’s so simple and the online reviews are very helpful. Well worth the $5.00 and the community forum is fantastic!
Jason_ellis - Amazing
It’s easy to use and finds stuff quick. Definitely want to support the devs behind this.
Harusmom - Absolutely delicious
This restaurant is only a month old. 100% Vegan lunch.
Dinner has fish. The place is hard to find; it’s the basement of a larger building that houses Hotel B.
Lunch today included tempeh, salad, gobo, sweet potato, rice, and amanagatogarshi peppers. Delicious homemade dressing.
I will be back!
Lauryk - Not up to date
Really disappointed. Says open when it’s not. Says open when definitely closed. Not truth worthy. The only option for vegans but it’s disappointing so far
Akshopping - Amazing guide to vegan food
If you are traveling, this app is precious. It help you find vegan eats wherever you go. I’ve even used it in my own home town and discovered new vegan options in various restaurants. Super helpful.

Sndra p - Great help, wonderful support
I love this app
Deliciozo - Useful app for vegans and vegetarians
Finds good food options that make me (vegetarian) and my family happy in any city.
I know it’s not their focus, but It would be nice if they could add a gluten free tab as well.
The End of Privacy - Such a useful app!!!
This app is so useful for vegetarians, vegans and health food enthusiasts at home and when you travel.
From shops to restaurants it's perfect. The reviews by users are very helpful too, as are the photos.
Leapy_lea - Best vegan app
This app is amazing, I drove across Canada and was able to find amazing and remote vegan options and food establishments all across the country! It’s great to see where you want to go and how to plan your day!
A_706 - Love it!!!
Best app for vegetarians and vegans to see what is out there!❤️😍 so greatfull for this app💗💗
Mabby77 - Ok but needs more reviews
I love this app but it need some updates information and reviews. Lots of veg friendly resto that aren’t on here and even missing a few of the new Vegan hot spots in Toronto such as Stella and Rosalinda.
Colorful71 - Best app to find veg friendly food world wide!
I so appreciate this app especially when travelling. There’s always a new option somewhere close by. I look forward to a vegan future 😊
WallaceJP - Love the app!
Love the app, but wish there was one more thing available on it...
the app has been so helpful in many ways at home and on trips. The reviews are extremely helpful and I have been able to invite non vegan friends to spots that have raving vegan food. I can also go out with them knowing ahead of time if I can eat at their spots or if their is at least one option for me before agreeing to go.
What I wish for is a section on the app to save “wish list” of restaurants and spots I plan to try. The restaurants/spots I’ve visited and will return to are saved in the like/favourites (heart) spot, but no where to save a “plan to visit soon” spot.
When the group is planning a spot to visit, I’d like to click on my wish list of spots and quickly choose from the ones I’ve already read the reviews and checked the pics and decided I wanted to try. If that can be added then this would be a perfect 5star app.
Mel:b - Super application
Merci beaucoup pour les concepteurs l’application est très utile pour diminuer notre consommation d’animaux dans nos assiettes.
LunaVegan - One of my favourite apps ever
This app has saved me time and time again. I absolutely adore this app and it is probably my top used app on my phone next to direction apps. I would buy this app over and over again and I rarely buy apps
QuickTapSurvey User - Why didn’t I get this app sooner?
As a vegetarian foodie, this is exactly the app I needed to make my travels that much more enjoyable!
Mrford007 - Totally glitchy
Why did I pay 5$ for a glitchy app?
Marc le vegan - Very usefull for travelling vegan
I found this application very usefull, when you travel and even at home. I found many vegan restaurant at home.
Joyfulveggie - Website is better
I downloaded the app and noticed many local vegan places were missing. I tried to add them by going to the website but they were already there. Seems like the app is missing information. Seems like a waste of money to buy this app when the website is better and free.
RambodR - A vegan’s best friend
Worth the money
SSigouin - Indispensable et nécessaire
Indispensable et nécessaire, on ne peut plus s’en passer dès qu’on a commencer à s’en servir.
JustTanzy - Best Vegan App
My favourite vegan/vegetarian app. Super easy to use, lists everything that is close to me, it also works globally! I travel quite a lot, and it’s so great knowing I can find restaurants prior to my trip that fit my dietary needs.
ChelseaDorrell - Expensive
Expensive for an app that just shows you vegan restaurants... I already knew about most of them that were listed
