OkyDoky - Language Courses Comments & Reviews 2026
Japanese section. I’ve been studying Japanese for about 8 years and this app is ok, after some fixes it would be better. just Do research.
Not always entirely accurate. I like the format of the app and the way lessons are presented for the most part, especially combining this app with other resources. However, sometimes it’s just blatantly inaccurate. For example, I’m using the app to study European Portuguese, and it will use words like “menina” and “menino” for basic terms like ‘girl’ and ‘boy’… despite the fact those are the Brazilian Portuguese translations (European would be rapariga/rapaz, respectively). Errors over extremely simple words suggest bigger mistakes further down the line, which makes it hard to fully trust OkyDoky as a learning tool.
Not exactly correct. Content is pretty good….only issue I have do far is that it for Spanish it teaches “eso” as “it” but “eso” is “that”. Also, one of the lessons references “soy feliz” but it should be “estoy feliz”
They use AI art. They use AI generated images for their app and all over their website. I had my suspicions when I initially downloaded the app but wasn’t too sure since I couldn’t inspect the images closely but upon visiting their website and being able to zoom in on the images, it’s definitely AI art. Different styles, resolutions, compression, weird blurring or random outlines on strokes. It’s obvious. Do better please.
Favorite language app but.... With the newer format there's some serious scaling issues on iPad and iPad Mini. There's white bars on both sides and some buttons missing. Please fix it on iPad Mini, just scale it all up to fit even lol
Go back to other picture selection. hello, may you please por the other pictures back? they look way better than this update.
Please fix the French Live Lesson. Everything is enjoyable thus far, but I have one complaint and that is the Live Lesson feature that I paid for always marking me wrong for saying "Je suis désolée" or other phrases that are pronounced exactly the same as the male version of it ("Je suis désolé"). Please fix that. Thank you.
Surprisingly great language learning app. I’ve struggled with finding the right kind of language learning app before in the past. I’ve tried everything from the big name apps to the more obscure ones. None of them could keep my attention for very long and I would end up forgetting about this. I saw this app as a promotion on the App Store and I figured I would give it a shot. So I downloaded it and sped through my first course. Then the second, then the third, and so on. I recently upgraded to premium for a month to try it and I am glad I did. I’ve learned Tagalog from this app in one week then I have in the past year of attempting to learn it. The questions are great and challenge you in the right way. It helps you remember words and phrases by intelligently ordering them and giving clues with the context of the question. If I had one gripe, it would be that the app runs a little slow on older devices. I mainly use my iPhone 12 Pro when studying and have 0 issues. But when I try to use my 2019 iPad or iPhone 5s that I keep as a backup, it can take some time before the screen changes to when you see stuff update. Kinda kills your flow if you want to keep up a pace. But this is a non issue for me since I mostly use my iPhone 12 Pro. Give this app a shot. It’s very well done
Great for European Portuguese!. Duolingo didn't offer European Portuguese. I'm glad because now I've found OkyDoky and it is just as good! So glad to have found something similar to Duolingo that offers European Portuguese.
OkyDoky. This app is great, I learned how to count to 10 in the language I am learning, and learned how to say new words! Many options, and it’s accurate!
A fun and easy app!. My review is based on the European languages of this app: I’ve studied several languages for years. I’ve tried every known language app out there, and I’m surprised to say this is one of the better ones. This app and Busuu are my top favorite apps for learning. OkyDoky has a colorful and super easy-to-use interface that makes learning fun and keeps me motivated. No weird graphics, no phrases that you’ll never use, the vocals are clear and easy to understand, and no tedious tasks. Just straightforward learning. Great for reinforcing a language you already know the basics of, or for newbie language practice. I hope OkyDoky adds Hebrew, Brazilian Portuguese and Latin American Spanish someday.
A good start. German lessons don’t teach genders with nouns, so I can’t recommend the app for German. I looked at the French and Italian courses and didn’t see that omission so it could be unique to German.
Very easy to use. The app is very easy to use and has so many languages to learn. I enjoy it very much
Surprisingly helpful!. I really like how there are categories for important subjects I need to learn. It’s genuinely superior to Duolingo just by that alone. I get to actually choose if I want to learn basic colors or if I want to go straight into verbs. And I don’t have to drill the same words like apple and dog like in duolingo. It’s a bit buggy sometimes for me though like when I finish a session it’ll lag or freeze a bit. But nothing that doesn’t make it function. But yea with duolingo I feel like I waste time and I genuinely see myself continuing to use this app for awhile. Atleast the beginning stages of my language learning
Great when used with Duolingo. When I use it with Duolingo, it helps me learn better ways to structure sentences.
Good but sort of not learning. What I’m saying is every single time if I make a wrong answer they will give me a mad face and when I’m learning my Japanese and I need to learn my tens it shows me the answer i’m trying not to look well byeeeeeeeee
Leaning Japanese. So far I'm really liking it, only thing I'd change is there doesn't seem to be a writing practice kanji, hiragana, and katakana 😔 Besides that I'm really enjoying the app.
Love it sooo much 😍. When I saw this app, I thought it was going to be bad but I went for it cause I really wanted to learn Japanese. Then I started a lesson and fell in love with it. It's easy, simple and fun! I learned a lot of new words in just 3 days!!!! Totally recommend it!!! 🇯🇵😍
I love this app! Awesome!!. This is a great app. It was easy to learn to navigate, has very clear male and female native voices, and progressively introduces content at just the right pace. I've been using different language apps for years, from Duolingo to Rosetta Stone, but this app has quickly become my favorite. It has an excellent selection of languages, and allows you to follow your own path or a suggested progressive path to learning. Love it! I even had a question about my account, which was answered promptly, courteously, and with service which more than surpassed my expectations (and I have high expectations)! I was even impressed by the cost of the app. The first month is discounted so you can get a feel for the app, but I quickly made my decision that I'd keep subscribing. Even the lifetime subscription is much less than the other apps - but this app is much much better. Well worth the cost and it keeps me rolling in language learning fun for hours. I can't say enough! Love it!
Could you add Kazakh?. I love the app. Have been using it for Russian. Wanted to request whether it is possible to add the Kazakh Language?
A Great Start, but many inconsistencies in Thai. I don’t regret buying this app, as it’s been helpful for learning Thai. However, the farther I get, the more frustrated I’m getting with one thing: very often now, the Thai words that are written are not the same words that are being spoken. The sentence means basically the same thing in each, but often the word order is different, or sometimes a word is added or left out. I’m trying to learn to read Thai script as I go, but it’s frustrating to not know how to pronounce what is written because what’s being said is different. Please make the script and the spoken recording consistent!
Fun learning. It feels more like I’m playing a game rather than learning a language, yet I am learning at the same time because I know quite a few words now.
Very helpful ^^. This app actually has helped me and it’s easy to use and learn
Definitely worth the download. I like this app since it gets you to learn new stuff and it works, you can go back to previous lessons and take quizzes and even study again. For me since I want to master the language I have a notebook where I write everything I learn. Have fun with the app and enjoy it, also you can customize your own schedule, that way you can study even when in a car or train and it saves the material you just learned. :)👍🏽👍🏽
Purchased this app but my account didn’t transfer to the new phone. I purchased the app but it won’t transfer to the new phone. It keeps asking to buy again. There isn’t any customer service.
Revised: Bought the lifetime deal, but it doesn’t include live. The app is a visually beautiful tool and it works very well. I was excited when I saw the amazing lifetime deal but I just learned it doesn’t include the Live courses and that it would be an additional $89 for the lifetime deal. It feels misleading but I can get over it. Overall, I really like the functionality and look forward to adding this to my language learning collection.
It used to be the greatest. I loved this app and I learned a lot from it when it had the older version but now you need to pay for everything and it isn't the same as it was before I understand that they need money but I am saddened that I cant study with it anymore.
Offline functionality. Please add the ability to use app offline. Would also like the Cantonese language.
Wish more countries were represented. I really like this app! It’s really helpful for memorization and learning new vocab. One thing that is upsetting, though, is the fact that the world map doesn’t even INCLUDE Africa (or South America, I guess because Spain and Portugal are already there). I understand that the section where you learn country names only includes countries of the languages offered on the app but it’s pretty disappointing that there aren’t any African languages, which means the lessons doesn’t include how to say countries like Nigeria (where I’m from).
Good!. This is actually really helping me learn the basics and I already know some Korean! So I feel like it’s more easier for me considering it’s teaching faster
What part of Beginner didn’t you understand?. The visuals are truly beautiful. But as for starting out, you throw me out of the boat immediately on the first screen with no basics. Maybe that’s how toddlers learn, but not me. If I want to dive into the deep waters without swimming lessons I can just go to Germany and fumble along. For starters, they only speak a sentence one time, there is no repeat button, so if you don’t quite get the nuances, you’re out of luck. And no going back to begin again. Glad I didn’t waste any money.
Great app but one thing. Great features and awesome alternative to Duolingo but with the Greek audio…she “αυτή” and they/these “αυτοί” sound exactly the same and it’s easy to get wrong with hearing only audio. It’s not the apps fault but I wish there was a way around it to not get it wrong. Also it says “a people” when it should say “people” or “mankind” for άνθρωποι. Good app. I’m sure premium is worth it considering how much work as been put into it.
Great app. Great app, I had some problems but they seem to be resolved. I look forward to getting back into it
Great app! Some suggestions. I've tried many language learning apps before, and this is amongst my favorite apps! It's engaging and useful. I'd recommend to casual learners or it's also be great for brushing up vocabularies. The time given is insufficient (5 minutes) which would be better if extended to 10-15 mins. Explanations would also be helpful as to why we were incorrect, for example, an explanation when such word should be used over another word similar to it etc. Just a small tip or message would be more helpful for us :)
Your level. What happens when you are not a beginner in that language and you want to learn advanced vocabulary? It’s a bit frustrating to start from the beginning.
Snappy. I have tried DuoLingo for months but I feel the progression with Hey Lingo is much faster. The app is quick and you can run through a lot really quick and repeating combined with quickness registers vocab better for me. It also feel a little “low effort” to open the app and play a round a bit while some of the other apps felt like I had to prepare myself mentally more to launch and get learning. A language learning app should be sticky and fun and this exactly hits the spot for me :)
So helpful. Very helpful - I believe this has helped me the most with my indirect and direct pronouns you have many chances to complete a flash card .. it stays in your memory.
Affordable and Helpful. The plus membership seems incredibly affordable for what you get. I’m shocked by the price. It seems like almost anyone could afford a membership, especially monthly. Thank you for making language learning more accessible!
Too many errors to be trustworthy. I found a number of grammatical errors in the Polish course. I’m a beginner, so I don’t know how these errors made it through. I don’t feel that I can continue with the course and risk learning incorrect information.
Hard to record my voice at time but great app. Just when I need to record my voice and I press it…at times I doesn’t allow me to record
You can’t be serious! Sinä et voi olla vakava!. In the Finnish course, under the word "lapsi" (child), the apps states: "The noun lapsi in Finnish is in the third person singular, and is classified as a common gender noun." Finnish nouns do not have grammatical gender. Nouns do not have an aspect of person (I, you, we, they, etc), only verbs do. Under the word "nainen" (woman) the app states: "The Finnish noun nainen is of the first declension, which means it is inflected for case, number, and possession" Finnish doesn’t have declensions. All nouns in Finnish are inflected for case, number, and possession. I know extremely little about Finnish but even I can identify glaring errors like these. Why would anyone pay money for an app that purports to teach languages while failing to understand the most basic concepts of those languages?
Learning at your own pace made easy.. While my go-to language learning app is Duolingo, I get easier bite sized pieces of information that is categorized better on THIS app. ( When used in conjunction with other language apps, this is a nice supplementary vocabulary ! )
Very effective lessons, but missing some key areas.. I’ve learning Ukrainian through the app for a couple weeks now. The lessons are amazing, I’m remembering things faster than I did through other resources. However; one area that definitely needs to be implemented is a place to learn the letters of the alphabet individually. I am lucky enough to be friends with a native Ukrainian speaker, who was able to teach and explain the letters to me, but it is definitely needed on the app. Especially since if you try to google the alphabet, a lot of the times the russian alphabet comes up instead claiming to be the Ukrainian alphabet, which can lead to a lot of confusion because while they are similar, Ukrainian has a lot of unique letters that are not in the russian language, such as і, ї, ґ, and є. While russian has letters not in the Ukrainian alphabet, such as ъ, ы, э, and ё.
Great if you have the payed version. I love the app and the animation. It truly makes learning a new language easy and fun, but I don’t like how unless you pay you only get a limited amount of time for lessons. Also buying premium is pretty expensive.
A Few Concerns. So far I really appreciate the introduction to this app. I am trying the Japanese language course and have practiced enough from other apps to be able to translate the sentences that were given. I like how it breaks down each of the sentences into parts (noun, verb, adjective, participle, etc), and especially with Japanese sentence structure (such as desu indicating the subject of a sentence, or more generally a sense of existence). I do have one main concern so far: In one of the introduction sentences, the sentence was “I eat eggs.” The Japanese translation of the kanji in the sentence was ‘tabane’ which is correct, but when I clicked on the kanji itself as I was trying to hear each individual part of the sentence in Japanese, it used the word ‘ran’, which CAN also mean eggs, but not the ‘tabane’ from the full sentence translation. I think it would be more consistent to use the same word in the isolation of a word as the word that was used in the sentence translation. This may be corrected later and I can update this review, but so far I am very excited to get into more of the content of the app!
BETTER THAN DUOLINGO. I was on duolingo and it said to complete the whole entire language term i’d have to pay to do it. I couldn’t afford to pay so much. I was browsing in Insta and saw and ad for OkyDoky. It’s so good that I deleted duolingo.
I really like it but one thing.. I am really liking this app so far. It’s far better than Duolingo but it in a specific way is similar with all the good parts about Duolingo and more. (I know everyone is comparing it with Duolingo and I’m no different, sorry). There is only one thing I don’t really like. When going through the vocab, it shows like the romaji/ romanization for the characters in the other language. I personally think that it makes it harder for me to learn and it distracts me and messes me up. I think it’d be good if there was an option to turn it off or switch between hiragana and romaji or something (unless I just haven’t found that option). But other than that I like the different topics that you can go through at your own pace and it doesn’t take forever to complete a section because it’s straightforward and only holds you back if you miss the answer.
needs better iPad support. overall i really like this app and even bought the lifetime subscription! but it needs better ipad support for features like split screen and even slide over. i use my ipad for note taking, especially for language learning, and not being able to use split screen on the app with my notes app makes the experience a lot less enjoyable
So far so good!. Just getting started, but I am liking this app so far.
Wonderful. OkiDoki is a wonderful app that teaches new languages with ease. It’s super easy to use and just amazing in general. I’m super motivated to learn new languages

SO attacking. I literally just downloaded the app and it already tells me to subscribe, also when I actually started learning it didn't even show me what the words where, just strait up phrases. I already know a but of french so I could answer the questions but for completely new people it would be very confusing. This app has lot’s of potential with its aesthetic design but please make it more of a slow paced experience.
Persian. I love this but would be even better with Persian courses!
I hate this app. When I got one wrong this stupid app only gave me 5%?! Also you guys should really give us more time we don’t want to buy ur membership
Easy and fun. Super simple words and pictures 👌
Unique and powerful features - not a fan of how they handled the upgrades. I’m revising my original review as they’ve since included the Live section of the app in the same subscription and given access to Lifetime subscribers. This is great value now as the Live speaking and review options are truly world-class features. They’ve also significantly improved the Review feature. I massively respect the fact they listened to their users and are constantly making the app better. This app will now be a daily part of my language study routine. Thank you! ——— First off, the use of speaking to study is a great option. The conversations are good for grabbing phrases and then inserting them into your own flashcard app. Which you will need to use because the review feature on this app isn’t good enough or customisable enough to truly cement what it is you’re learning. Pro’s and minor Con’s aside, what I really don’t like is that I bought a Lifetime upgrade (yep, stupid me), and then the app six months later decides they will unveil a Live feature using Ai. But you guessed it - the people who bought lifetime memberships don’t get access to it. Not even a discount as a reward! Which would be very much appreciated as the rates are very expensive and on the level of more well-rounded and established language learning apps. The experience has soured me from ever buying a lifetime membership again as developers now use lifetime membership upgrades as a temporary cash infusion to fund feature development that they’ll then expect to charge you again for. Better to stick to a time period subscription and then ditch an app if they screw you over.
Great but. I just wish there was an option for the Japanese course for the kanji to be used instead. Also a katakana and hiragana course for those who aren’t familiar with either before downloading the app (thankfully I’m good with those) would be nice to see. Other than that it’s a great app with an actual reasonable price for premium.
Really enjoyable and effective. The flash card system and pronunciation is great. Subscription is actually affordable and worth it compared to other apps/learning systems.

Helped me so much, so quickly!. Wonderful app and site, thanks a lot! I’ve learned so much.
Bring offline support. Please bring an offline option to download certain parts of courses, that would be a game changer. Other wise well design with a lot of languages to choose from at an affordable price ! Got the lifetime membership and it is worth it !
Cool app. Love it !! It’s has more langage for French speakers than any other app I know!
Love the app but there’s a lot of translation problems.. I found some mistakes in Portuguese and the Japanese one is filled with a lot of transliteration (romaji) mistakes. Especially with words where you find a large hiragana followed by a small hiragana. Instead of showing the new sound formed by these two when they are together, the transliteration (romaji) shows the sound made by each individual hiragana. It makes it really complicated to read the word and to understand these sounds for beginners.
Actually good. This app is surprisingly well developed. It’s fun and makes language learning a lot easier. The membership options are also cheaper than most leading apps. I’d love to see Serbian added as no language app currently has it. I think it would help this app gain momentum as well as a new app.
Absolutely love it.. It’s better than duolingo
Deeper explanations please. Suggestions: 1) grammar reference tab devoted to explaining grammar concepts. Currently the grammar is scattered throughout the “cards” in point form which doesn’t allow for detailed explanations the way a dedicated tab would. This makes it hard to find a specific concept and to really gain enough info from it once you do find it. 2) you currently show the sentence structure during the grammar portion of the card but it rarely also includes the word order which is much more important for forming sentences in the sentence you are trying to learn. Also you should explain why you chose the vso instead of vos or SOV as I am currently learning Tagalog which frequently switches between word orders and I am having trouble understanding when to use. 3) You should make a feature that lets you compare a sentence that has been reworded into different variations and allow people to study the different factors used to change a sentence 4) you should have it show me the grammar explanation every time and allow me to advance when I am ready regardless of whether I was able to guess the answer. Sometimes I am able to use process of elimination to guess the answer by knowing a few words but I didn’t actually properly understand the sentence structure and grammar. 5) an audio based flash card playlist using the built in audio recordings that repeat the words or phrases in English and then in the target language so that you can study while your hands are busy or while driving 6) short stories and picture books! Full sentences that are interconnected are crucial for learning how to speak naturally and not just learn random words that you don’t know how to stick together. 7)progressive alphabet incorporation. For Japanese for instance you can have people study the hiragana and katakana by adding in a portion of a word in hiragana and the other part in romaji that way each word is not overwhelming at one time but allows you to use your memory of the word to figure out a letter you don’t remember and then commit it to memory. This way you learn a letter or two at time while also learning a word at the same time and not overwhelming the learner with too many new symbols all at once.
change it back. I hate the new version, the old one is better.
The Icelandic Course Needs Work. This is the first language app I’ve found that finally has an Icelandic course on it, but unfortunately it looks like there are quite a few mistakes in it. Maybe the developers could get an Icelandic expert to go over it and make changes? Still, it’s definitely better than nothing and I love the mechanics of the app itself.

I mean it’s cool. It’s cool but I wish they had Brazilian Portuguese or more languages in general, I know they have more than just 4 but it would be really cool if they had more
super cool. free version good 4 casual language learning
Kind of addictive. I’m using the app to learn Swedish, and, as a product manager, it’s definitely an interesting app for me to learn with. I actually opened the app store to leave some feedback about the app, and saw that a brand new update was just released an hour ago - what a nice surprise! Even better, most of my points had been covered, some of them being: - The images - all of which are clearly AI generated, but the updated versions are definitely much better. Seeing so many extra thumbs was getting a bit distracting 😄 - Missing context - such as conjugation of certain words, and how they’re used in sentences. Some of this seems to be covered with the new update, but would love little insights on how things are done in specific countries the language is spoken in (see Mango Languages app) - Pronunciation guides - for languages where the pronunciation is trickier, would love to have more transcriptions with English letters (ie Sverige - Sveriye - Swedish) and not just offering the voice reading it - Pronunciation genders - if I can look through the cards to two genders pronounce words, why can’t it be done during learning? - Slower speaking - would be great to have an ability to hear speech in slower speed - Longer text - haven’t found this part in app yet, so it might not be there - but would love to see some courses with longer text. - Accuracy. As others have mentioned, how can we trust OkyDoky’s language accuracy? I don’t usually leave reviews - but this app was so addictive I wanted to leave some feedback on what could even make it better. I’m guessing some AI is probably being used in terms of the languages themselves, too, so I’m curious how much that can be stretched to provide extra learning context.
Language. I love learning languages
Good for vocabulary building, but sketchy on gendered verbs. For my purposes, as someone who knows a bit of Russian already, I am really loving this app for vocabulary building! So please don’t take offense at the long critique I have to give for the sake of pure beginners. However, there is something very important for Russian grammar that hasn’t been accounted for: past-tense verbs have a gender, not just nouns. This leads to the following key situations that need to be addressed so less experienced learners don’t get tripped up. I am noting them here because reporting every instance of these in app would be prohibitive since it happens with such great frequency. First, the male and female speakers should not speak of themselves with opposite-gender verbs. As a woman, I say, “Я была,” for example, not “был.” This sort of thing needs to be reflected by your voice samples. Second, a feature needs to be introduced allowing the user to select which grammatical gender they want to be held to when speaking of themselves. As a woman I should be marked wrong if I describe myself with masculine words and marked correct for describing myself in the feminine, and should NOT be marked wrong for these feminine grammatical choices. Especially for the ladies, we need to build the correct grammatical habits early so we don’t sound uneducated the instant the first sentence comes out. Next, when referring to “you,” there’s a lot of work to be done there too. “Ты был” and “Ты была” are both acceptable, but depend on if I’m speaking to a man or woman respectively. These situations need to be clearly taught as currently the app would lead a new learner to think that masculine verbs can be used on anyone in the second person and they can’t. Finally, bless y’all’s hearts, but with “Вы”…we need to acknowledge that this isn’t just the Russian word for “y’all.” 🤣 It’s also a formal singular too. This usage isn’t taught at all, and not addressing someone in a position of power this way might seem offensive. Children should usually address teachers and other adults outside their family as “Вы” and there are situations where adults should know how to do it too. And when you do use it on a single person, the gender rules I noted above for “ты” apply. I know this sounds like a lot of complaining but the app IS working fine for my purposes as a more intermediate learner. I just think for Russian, at least (have not tried the other languages), these issues are a significant problem for beginners who have no clue about these major points.
No customer service and scam. Bought lifetime membership cook my money did not go though and they have never responded to my Customer service report
Payment. You need to pay for absolutely everything, if you’re young , or simply don’t make / have enough money, don’t install.
Scam!. I bought the lifetime subscription and now they want me to pay again. They don’t have any option to communicate with them! Do not purchase this subscription it’s a scam!!!
