IBird Photo Sleuth App Description & Overview

What is ibird photo sleuth app? This new update to iBird Photo Sleuth now includes access to our ornithology experts who will help identify your bird if you want more help. The “Help Me Identify a Bird” forum has been around for 10 years and has over 100,000 members.

Every now and then an app breaks out from the pack with features that are simply astonishing. iBird Photo Sleuth fits that mold; use its machine learning "brain" to identify a photograph of any bird of North America, regardless of the photo’s quality. Photo Sleuth uses Apple’s new CoreML machine learning system to figure out the species in even the most distorted, fuzzy and poor contrast photograph. The Photo Sleuth app has been “trained” by over 2 million photos of bird species to ID birds with uncanny accuracy.

You can use iBird Photo Sleuth in the field -- no internet connection is required, because its CoreML database is contained in the app. Take a photo with your camera or select it from the built-in iPhone Photos gallery (Dropbox, Google Photos and OneDrive coming). Don’t worry if the bird is a tiny blob in the frame; Photo Sleuth is smart enough to find the features that distinguish it from all other 900+ bird species of North America.

After you submit your photo to the Sleuth, it will give you a list of its top 3 guesses as thumbnail sized images. Each will display a “Confidence” value between 0% and 100%. When the Sleuth is really sure of its analysis, it will produce a high value; when unsure it will display a low value. If the app thinks that you have submitted a photo of something other than a bird, it will display “Not a Bird.” Of course, some people’s faces look like birds, so it may still suggest a bird species. For example, my selfie came up with “Not a Bird” for the #1 spot and the Barn Owl for #2.

To help confirm the 3 guesses made by Photo Sleuth, you can tap on any of the thumbnail images to open more species details, including an enlarged illustration, text that explains important field marks and a range map that shows the migration coverage of the bird. The range map includes a range and habitat paragraph that helps confirm that the species is indeed located in your GPS area. A future update will add our “Birds Around Me” technology to further narrow the choices that Photo Sleuth guesses. On this same screen you may open a rich content species account in our iBird app (should you have it on your phone) to review much more information, including playing the bird’s songs and calls, seeing similar birds, behavior details and much more.

Sharing of your results can be done two ways: you can share your photo and the Photo Sleuth guesses with your friends via Apple Messages, Email, Facebook, Twitter and all other functions such as printing, which appear on the standard Apple activity menu.

There is also a button for optionally sharing your photo and the results of the Photo Sleuth guess with Mitch Waite Group, so that we can improve our neural network. Both correct and incorrect guesses help us improve the performance of artificial intelligence. Or course, we only use the photograph for training, and the copyright remains with you.

Impressive. Recently returned from East TX where my spouse focused on birding and I tried to become a better bird photographer. I have over 200 pix that others say are pretty darn good, but do I recall the birds’ name? Along comes this app and it identifies every bird from its photo including a yellow-crowned night heron you can barely see through a thicket and a common pauraque that to me is almost impossible to see through branches and twigs on the ground. For this specific task of identification through existing photos I hope a future version will make returning to the respective album less cumbersome. The App Store is riddled with app reviews describing a complete lack of customer service. Not so with Mitch Waite. I found this group to be responsive and generous in their willingness to help. Once again, those involved in birding prove themselves to be helpful and honest.

Awesome!. Sent in a very blurry (due to snowfall) pic of water pipit and it ID’d it easy peasy - great job! Totally recommend this app & it will sure come in handy when hawks fly by and all I get is a blurry shot but wonder who the heck was that :)

ID from a photo? Oh yes. This is an amazing app that does what it was intended to do! I have enjoyed the Parent app for years and now this is icing on the cake. It took great insight to birth this product! Congratulations are in order!!

Simply Amazing. Brilliant app. I do a lot of field bird photography and occasionally get stumped while editing and labeling the photos in Lightroom (especially hummingbirds, fall shorebirds and warblers, young gulls). Even though I have been a life-long avid bird watcher, we cannot be 100% all the time. For the ones stumping me, I take a photo within the app off of my 4K monitor. I have not tried it out yet on fledglings. So far has been flawless in identification.

Awesome app. What a fun app! Been spending the morning ID’ing birds in my photo gallery. Have not been able to stump it yet. Nicely done. Super easy to use.

Great, fun app. This iBird app works very well. Even with some far away bird shots, it can help a lot in identifying birds I have photographed. It’s a good, quick way to verify what I am thinking a bird is. Some identification is obviously well off but those are usually for good reason (poor quality photo or odd angle) but by in large it works great.

Exceptional app. I’m an amateur birder with an apple orchard and a 400mm lens, so I had a large library of bird pictures, about 90% of which I could identify. I had a tough time telling the difference between an Eastern Phoebe and an Eastern Wood Peewee. Fortunately, this app ID’d both correctly with 99% confidence. Female Summer Tanagers, hatchling American Robins, Eastern Bluebirds in full molt - all were correctly identified by this app in mere seconds!

Incredible!. I have so much trouble filling out all the characteristics (tail shape, eye color, etc) in other apps, and still have to “wing it” (pun intended) and hope I’m right. This app id’d two of my mysteries within seconds! Much more gratifying. Thanks! Worth every cent. Paulshel

Great app. This app makes birding for novices so much easier! I have been looking for an app like this a long time.

Excellent!. I am grateful to have an app that helps me learn about my bird friends. I take pictures of birds, and it is joy to get to know them. Thank you!

Wonderful teacher. This has been a lifesaver for me in my attempts to learn to identify birds. I now can photograph them (my new hobby) and verify my identification using the app. Those times when I can’t identify, this app has had no problems. I just wish there were an app to identify birds from their songs, now.

Helpful for New Birders. Sleuth has been a great adjunct program to iBird. It has accelerated my learning of new-to-me species. Even photos that are distant or not perfectly in focus are usable and produce accurate results.

Very Useful. I have only had it a few days but find it very useful. It has accurately identified all but one instance. I like the fact that it states the probability of its identification. I would rate it higher if there was a MAC version so I wouldn’t have to download my pictures to my phone.

Dead on...most of the time. I am absolutely amazed at how accurately this identified birds from my photos. Even got one I misidentified way back and recently was told otherwise (which was an Olive-sided Flycatcher). It missed two. It missed an Empid Flycatcher but amazingly enough I had two photos of the same bird and it got it on the second try which was a much better side shot. Well, can’t complain because we all know how difficult those Empids are to identify! It also missed a photo of a dark morph Rough-legged Hawk. Thought it was a Red-tailed. Again, not complaining. A lot of people think a dark morph Roughy might be a Red-tailed and I can’t imagine how hard it is for software to figure this out. I tried all sorts of birds. In trees, in water, in flight on the ground. It got them right. I love it. I am definitely going to tell my birding friends. Now I got to try it with some lousy bird photos. But, I don’t take lousy bird photos...most of the time! At least I don’t keep lousy bird photos. Got to take some! A great app and well worth the money. My hats off to the excellent job.

Works!. Amazing app. Works on fuzzy iPhone pics of birds and images captured from photos taken elsewhere. I was skeptical but seems to work very well.

Extremely accurate. Very impressive app that’s accuracy is amazing. It can identify birds from very fuzzy photos that stumps my expert friends.

Still needs work. While this app was able to correctly identify most of the birds in photos that I challenged it with, it was to identify others that should have been obvious, even after multiple attempts. When I submitted the same photos to my Merlin Bird ID app, they were identified correctly on the first trial. The Merlin Bird ID app was free as opposed to the $4.99 that I was charged for iBird Photo Sleuth!

Best app ever!. I have recently been getting into birding and have been searching for an app that makes it easy to ID a bird. I tried many. I found entering descriptions like “prominent color” and trying to match silhouettes to be challenging but THIS app is it. Take the picture...crop it...and done! Now I can do that!

Unbelievably accurate.. I just recently got this and am absolutely astounded at the accuracy of the results. I just love it!! It is truly an amazing App.

Fast & accurate bird ID. I’ve used the Sleuth to identify over 10 birds I saw in both upstate NY and while on vacation in Hilton Head. I even took cell photos of my computer screen of birds and the sleuth id’d quickly. Avid border now very impressed.

Not perfect but has narrowed things down. Even on some bad pictures it managed correct answers

I love this app!. This makes identifying birds so much easier! One can use iBird Photo Sleuth to outright identification of a bird, or to confirm the identification they've already done, or even to point one in the direction they can go for further identification. I love the percentages of begging correct so a person can evaluate whether or not to accept the app's identification.

A good tool for bird ID. I don’t use this app to confirm an ID, but it certainly does help in narrowing the possibilities when I am dealing with a less than quality photo.I really find this app quite useful. I’m still waiting for a quality app that will do the same thing with regard to audio recordings of bird song.

Excellent and accurate IDs!. I am one of those guys that has bird identification books stuffed in pockets in the car, next to the computer, on the end table and in my camera bag. You know what? I still get stumped on bird IDs. I loaded this app up on my iPhone and started importing pictures of birds I have photographed. Everyone of them was identified correctly! Now I have fuzzy issues when it comes to Sandpipers and some other waders. I ran some of my pictures through this app and it identified Dunlins, Short and Long billed Dowitchers, various Plovers, Least Sandpipers, Yellowlegs and on and on. I had a Orange Crown Warbler in my backyard this winter and it correctly identified him too. Easy to use. I see it links to iBird but not sure if there are reporting links and hotspots built into to app. I would appreciate those features! This app is free! I have paid a lot of money for my collection of bird books. But for now on, this is probably all I need. If the app gets any better I would gladly pay for it.

Impressed!. I am a bit hard to convince that these kind of apps actually work well. How can a phone help me identify a bird that I can’t identify myself using a high quality bird book? After providing a poorly taken photo of a bird I have been attempting to identify in a different phase of plumage, this app answered the question precisely. Impressed!

This is what’s been missing all along!. Yes, this is what’s been missing all along! How many times have I seen a new bird and then fumbled through the identification portion in iBird, only to be frustrated by not being able to identify the bird? I’m sure this has happened to everyone. Now don’t get me wrong, iBird Pro is an excellent app. But, iBird Sleuth is an amazing addition to this program. As soon as I installed it, I tried out. Unbelievable! Good call, guys.

Love the newest iBird app!. A very enjoyable and easy to use app. I challenged iBird Photo Sleuth with blurry photos taken on my old iPhone 5. It correctly identified most of the birds and all good quality photos. I’m really excited to use this app on my new phone during my next bird outing!

Pretty Cool. I tried this out today and it works pretty well. I didn’t have too many pictures of American birds, but the ones I tried worked. Seems like it would be a very helpful app. I don’t know how well it would work with photos snapped on the iPhone in the field, because generally the birds are really small so by the time you blew them up to fill up the square in the app, they might be too grainy. It’d be neat if it really worked. Hopefully they will expand their database to include the rest of the world’s birds. Of course, that might fill up the entire memory of the phone.

Easier to identify birds. This app makes it easier to identify birds. I like to take pictures in my back yard and all I have to do is put the picture on the app and it identifies the bird for me

Very impressed. I teach in the field of nature connection and I have been waiting for a while to see any usable application of a neural network for nature field guide purposes. I am very impressed with the abilities of this app so far and am very much looking forward to all of the future improvements in this area, bringing together technology and nature connection! Thank you guys for spearheading this in a good way!!!

Impressive!. I have yet to fool this app. Even blurry photos come back with the correct bird, or at least a high probability of it being that bird. I am a total amateur and like to track what I see in my yard. I’ve already had to correct a few of my observations. Very impressed.

My favorite bird app. The photo sleuth feature really works (most of the time) and really helps me confirm my bird ID.

Great tool for Birders!. I love being able to verify what bird I was able to capture with my camera. It is amazing how well it works.

It just works. Got it as part of a 3app pack with iBird pro. Works seamlessly to identify photos of birds, has given us more time to spend watching birds than thumbing through field guides. A+

Outstanding App. A friend recommended this app. All I can say is it is very accurate. Even when I can’t get close to the bird, and have to zoom and crop the pic, so far this app has never missed. I’m very impressed.

Ripped Off. I’m an avid birder in South Texas. A few years ago I purchased the iBird app and it included photo sleuth. A few days ago photo sleuth was gone. A person reached out to me and said it’s been reinstalled. Wrong. Just a classic and common way that companies get greedy for money. How sad this is how our country has become.

Amazing app!. I have been a fan of the iBird apps for many years. When I saw the iBird Photo Sleuth in the App Store, I had to give it a go. The very first time I snapped a quick picture of a bird I thought I recognized, the app confirmed I was correct. For the bird watching fanatic, this is a “must have” app.

Amazing. I was skeptical of this app since I’d already purchased a similar app that claimed to ID birds by song. It was a total failure. But this app is good. If iBird Photo Sleuth represents the future of bird identification my days as a birding expert may be numbered. I submitted a collection of difficult to identify photographs I’ve taken and was surprised at how well it worked. Out of 10 hard to identify photos it got 8 correct. I was actually relieved when it got confused telling a Chipping-Sparrow from a House Sparrow, so there’s still hope for my skills. But the app was able to identify some very poor quality photographs that stumped my buddies. A Golden-crowned Kinglet was just a fuzzy blob on a branch; it must have keyed an orange-yellow crown you can barely make out to identify it correctly. I think the price is fair, especially given the app provides range maps and good quality illustrations. As an iBird Pro owner I like that it will open that app from its own ID page. However I’d actually prefer if this was an in-app purchase for iBird instead of YAA (yet another app), as my iPhone is just too cluttered with birding apps. They ask your permission to train the AI using your photos. Given how bad the quality of the ones I submitted are, I wish them luck. Overall I’ll give this app 5 stars, mainly for the accuracy and the simplicity of the interface.

A necessary addition for birding. Great app. Right a lot of the time and points you in the right direction the rest of the time. Lot of fun to mess with and play around.

Wow! Yup, that good. I have been photographing outdoor life for quite a while. I only recently found this app. I had a number of led birds in my photos that I could not identify, even with Bird Guides. I used the app and,in seconds, answers came back that further research proved to be correct. It is amazing. Gives you 3 birds with likely percentages of being the proper ID. Mine were all in the number 1 selection. Thanks for this app iBird.

IBird photo sluth. Easy to use and very accurate. As a wildlife photographer (serious amateur) it’s been fun to use. It’s even been able to ID some birds where the photos are at an odd angle.

An Excellent App for Wildlife Photographers. One of my hobbies is wildlife photography, particularly bird photography. So I generally have a photo of the birds I want to identify (sometimes a good one, sometimes a marginal one). I am not an experienced birder and I have found this app very useful in making bird IDs where the bird is not one that everyone knows. For example, earlier this year I photographed some birds in a marshy area of the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The birds looked like largish sparrows to me, but I was not able to match them up with sparrows in my bird apps and guides. I ran a picture through iBird Photo Sleuth and found out the bird was a female red-winged blackbird. Perhaps I should have guessed this, as there were easily recognizable male red-winged blackbirds around, but I did not. I confirmed this looking in my apps and guides, including iBird, but most apps index birds by the more colorful male, so I might not have found it without the photo ID. The app has helped me identify a number of other birds, including various warblers, sparrows, and small falcons called merlins. I also use the app to confirm IDs where I am not entirely sure. I also like the fact that the app gives percentage estimates when it comes up with multiple possibilitirs. The integration with my iBird app is also quite helpful. I look forward to the continued development of the app and its possible expansion to areas outside North America.

Works well with sharp photos. Have only used a few times so far, but have been fairly impressed with the results. Fuzzy bird photos do not seem to work. Also to use a photo made with the iPhone, one would need really close to the bird in order to have enough detail to ID the bird.

I’m impressed. I went to IBird Sleuth during our trip to Alaska for help with some poor pictures of birds I wanted to identify. I was impressed with how well it worked identifying birds. I recommend this product.

Great ID tool. When I find a photo on my computer that is unusual and unnamed, I take a photo of that photo with my phone, go to this app, and get an immediate id. So helpful!

Exceptional, iBird Sleuth!. I downloaded this app because I could not believe it could do what it does. My wife and I tested it out most of the morning when we first got it. Right it was most of the time or close enough that we got to the correct bird very quickly. What was/is unbelievable is that no matter the fuzziness and smallness of the birds in our photos, this app can guess either right on or so close that it is easy get get the identity os said bird. And, of course, the more submissions it has the smarter it gets! Thanks for a great bird guide!!!

Loving this new app!. I had just got back from spring birdwatching and discovered this app. It ID’d many of the birds I saw and couldn’t identify. It was so much fun sorting through my pictures with this app to assist me. I love it and highly recommend it. Definitely worth the money to get the help. Can’t wait to try it out on fall birds. Thanks.

“Sleuthing for answers”. I have numerous bird apps that identify photos. I like this one because when trying to reach a consensus, iBird Photo Sleuth will usually help resolve doubt to my identification photo query. Finally, identifying poor quality photos is a great help as I don’t own a high-end camera and telephoto lens or spotting scope.

Good for a beginner. I’m a beginning birder but I’d like to get better at it and this app seemed like a good way to start. This app uses new tech from Apple called CoreML (ML=Machine Learning) to analyze a photograph of a bird and guess what species it is. The app displays 3 small images with names and a percentage representing how likely each represents what’s in the photo. I used my iPhone 8 Plus camera to snap some shots of seagulls, pigeons and a few crows. The photos were pretty bad but the app was still able to identify them. I googled several bird names, saved them to my photo gallery and used the app to open and identify. It got everyone right. I tried a Monarch butterfly photo and it’s first choice was a Ruby-throated Hummingbird at 63%. Second choice was Not a Bird at 19%. I think the developers need to work on the part of the app that decides what’s a bird, but I had fun using it and think it will be a great way to learn how to identify birds. Few things I’d like to see; a way to look up a bird without needing a photo so I can use it as a field guide, some kind of sighting system like eBird and a way to upload my observations to eBird, more photos of the bird I identified (don’t have their iBird reference app).

Easy way to identify backyard birds. I use it often and am well satisfied, particularly with its ability to analyzing blurry or poorly focused photos.

I have been very successful using this to identify local birds.. The link to iBird pro for more info is an excellent resource.

Works great!. This is a handy app. Even recognises pics I take right off the back of my SLR. Identified a Swamp Sparrow for me yesterday that I might never have figured out on my own. Highly recommended.

Didn’t correctly identify birds. App didn’t correctly identify any birds I took photos of.

My Go to app to ID Birds. Nothing fancy just simplicity at it’s best. Tried it out on a known bird from a photo I had taken a few years ago & it came up with 3 choices ranging from 0% Confidence to 6% to 95% Confidence (Barred Owl which was correct) The other 2 options were also Owls. I’m happy with it & look forward to using it more. I’d def recommend it for identifying birds. It also connects to iBird Pro & you have the option of sharing your photo (if you have the copyright or permission to share) with the Developers for Internal Purposes. The app even opens your mail Program, writes the email, attaches the Photo & all you have to do is click send if you wish to share. Just tried with a few more common birds & results were excellent.

Won’t Download. This app worked great before. I was really impressed with how accurate it was. It’s definitely better at identifying birds than I am. Now for whatever reason, after the app offloaded to the iCloud briefly (we don’t get many birds I don’t recognize during winter) every time I try to redownload the app the download doesn’t finish. I hope it’s not because of the price increase. I guess the good news is that I can still use iBird Pro to identify birds; it’ll just take a little longer.

Amazing!. So easy and works like. Dream!

Invaluable tool. Whether at home or in the field, iBird Photo Sleuth, in conjunction with iBird Canada, is a trustworthy and reliable companion. The first photo I ever tried was a blurry, digitally zoomed photo of a nondescript grey bird against a snow bank. In moments, iBird Sleuth had worked it’s magic and I was able to share that info with my family who were watching with me as well. I highly recommend this app for the beginner OR the experienced birder. You won’t regret the purchase.

Fantastic app!. Says it all!

Works quite well. Successfully identified most of the bird pics I’ve tried

iBird Photo Sleuth. The best app ever for identifying birds. Even with a crummy photo it has recognized the birds. LV Rox

Finally found a solution to get Photo Sleuth to work with iBird apps. I purchased iBird Pro. Making me buy another app just to make photo sleuth work is a questionable marketing tactic

Love this app. I know my birds, but sometimes I’m not confident, I need help and this app hits it on the button love it!! 💕

Fun app. Love being able to identify what birds I see from a photo.

IBird Sleuth. Excellent! Results reflect the outstanding work that went into it’s development. Thank you. GV

Very useful. Was able to identify most birds accurately.

Not Helpful - Waste of $. Did not recognize common geese or swallows. The email to provide feedback also did not work. Waste of $10. I do not recommend.

Sleuth does not load as in-app purchase of iBird Pro.. Had to pay for it TWICE! And then buy the stand-alone app.

What’s that bird. Works great. Indispensable for the less experienced.

No bird for Baja?. Thank you for adding the Mexican owls, please I have birds endemic to Baja. Not happy with buying the sleuth application and then having to buy it again as in App plug-in.

Doesn’t match the bird. Picture of Robin identity not even close. Feel like I’ve been ripped off.

IBird Photo Sleuth. Love this app, seems to be very accurate!

Very accurate!. Awesome!

A+!. Wonderful and fun to use!

Fantastic bird ID App. This app has a fantastic identification rate.

Best on line birding app. Fantastic amount of information and constantly updating

Great sleuth. Misses a few but well worth using!

Beginners. This program will allow new birders to I.d. birds that would otherwise be a frustrating effort. GREAT birding tool !! James Douglas

Poor Accuracy. I have tried several birds of known identity and the app is wrong.
