"This app is now my default solution for quickly creating .md files to share with other people." - Federico Viticci, MacStories

----

‪Pretext is designed to work seamlessly with iCloud Drive and other file providers. This means you can open files directly from your Files app, and any changes are saved right back, available to use on other devices and in other applications. No clunky import and export steps just to make an edit – instead, you keep full control of your files.

Pretext works great on all your iOS devices. Thanks to comprehensive keyboard shortcuts, Pretext works especially well with iPad Pro and Smart Keyboard.

If you encounter any problems, please get in touch at pretext@blork.co.uk, tweet @pretext_app, or post at /r/pretextapp.

Pretext Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

OneDrive. Opening a text file stored in OneDrive works fine. But the “Done” button does not save the changes. There is no other obvious “Save” button. Why doesn’t Apple provide a “Notepad” simple text editor? This shouldn’t be this difficult.

Almost great, but still very good.. Probably the best app for editing text files through multiple cloud sources. The only things holding it back are the archaic interface and… well… again, the interface. It feels clunky and overly minimalist. Though, it shares this problem with almost all iOS text editor apps, so I don’t consider it a major drawback, but it keeps me from rating it at five stars. I still use this app instead of others, and I’m sure I’ll continue to do so.

Excellent!. This app can edit text files right in iCloud and it’s so quick and simple. Thank you!

Good editing...needs better storage options. Editing in this app is decent. The preview button would be better as a UI control rather than a share action. It really needs support for direct. OneDrive and Dropbox though.

Good simplified interface, small bugs. I really appreciate the interface and simplicity of this editor. Edit: found my issues with OneDrive are with Onedrives implementation on iOS.

Not compatible with iOS 15. The app keeps crashing, not compatible with iOS 15! Be aware! I’d recommend removing it from App Store and devices!

Great overall. I really like that this allows me to edit my text files directly from Dropbox, and I use the feature to preview as HTML all the time! But, as others have pointed out, I don't like how it updates the file whenever you open it without changing anything. Also, sometimes files don't refresh as quickly as you'd like them to, sometimes I have to navigate back and return to see files update. But maybe that's the nature of Dropbox integration. Finally, it would be nice if it could support advanced (maybe not kosher) features like tables. I would be willing to pay to get that.

great. Great app that let me edit markdown files stored in OneDrive. It can use iOS file directory and auto sync.

The Best. Changed how I keep simple notes between jobs. The file/cloud integration works with all my services so it’s seamless between all major providers through the Files app on iOS. It literally “just works”. Paid the $0.99 just to throw the developers a bone. Keep up the good work.

Lots to like but no option to print. I like the app. It’s simple. But there is no option to “print” on my iPhone or iPad. Selecting “share” does not present the opportunity to use the Apple print function. That is a major need for me.

Erratic editing. Press and hold dragging of cursor is erratic, making quick edits of existing text mostly unusable. The only workaround is to touch exactly where you want to place the cursor. If you're off by a single character then try again because you can't hold to move the cursor location without the text scrolling wildly causing the cursor to end up somewhere completely unexpected.

Good app, one awful bug/issue. I like the app and it does a great job of making quick edits and whatnot on my phone. The issue I have is that every time I change or even open a file on my phone that is formatted in plaintext, the line breaks on my computer file all go away. Not sure if this is a bug or I’m doing something on my end, but it makes the app unusable for me unless I’m starting a file on my phone.

Shows much potential. One of the better markdown editors for iOS but there is still room for improvement. A couple useful suggestions: 1) Make markdown styles affect not just color but also size and styling. I.e. a header should be bigger than normal text. Bold, italic, etc 2) Retain editing position when resuming app. Currently, it appears to bump the cursor to the end of the last open document, which is especially frustrating on longer docs because you then have to find where you were last editing. Otherwise, great work. Please keep at it devs!

Great app, but IAP for dark mode is nonsensical. Charge for themes, charge for something else, not dark mode... especially since it’s an accessibility issue plus I can just enable it for free by using smart invert so all you are doing is making me do 2 more clicks to achieve the same functionality. Great app otherwise.

Great app, one flaw. This app is exactly what i need. I was basically searching for a notepad equivilant for iPadOS, and this app did not dissapoint. It's basically notepad (as I said) but with a few extra features that don't get in the way but are nice to have. Overall, the app is simple, but well made. My only issue with this app (which I hope gets resolved quickly) is ever since I updated to iOS 15 the enter key on my keyboard doesn't work in PreText. I've had to paste a newline in every time I want to go down a line.

Doesnt detect the return key on an apply keyboard. Just that - it doesnt detect the return key. The return key works on the virtual keyboard just fine but on the apply keyboard, it does nothing.

Replacement for Ios’ Notes’ weird removal of saving to Cryptomator. Came across mention of this app on a site rightfully complaining about how iOS Notes inexplicably removed the basic functionality of saving a file to Cryptomator. This solves that. I can now use my device do things with my writings and files that I want to, and in fact bought an iPad to supposedly be able to do. Even if Apple has decided that I no longer need to do them.

Missing essential features, bugs. I hate to review badly, this app is free after all and it is neat. But for a real markdown editor, it’s missing tons of stuff: - open file from Dropbox, app crashes - Cannot recognize lists as typed (have to tap on line, wait for popup to show, then hit “list”) - One “real” recognized lists, not quick way to indent or un-indent And some other issues where you type markdown and expect the app to “play ball” and do the right thing (it doesn’t). But it is neat. It highlights. It has a cool markdown link insert tool. Spellcheck works as expected. Some bugs: Hitting list button on existing list ads more dashes (does not needs, already has dash bullet). Not as important, but I’ve hit some rendering bugs. App opens document but keyboard area is blank white and does nothing. Or text area is cut in half but keyboard is present. Undo bar doesn’t appear, etc.

The extra payment doesn’t work. I bought the in-app purchase and it unfortunately doesn’t work :( Hope this can be fixed! Lovely and intuitive app outside of that error

review nagging won’t stop. I’ve been prompted to rate the app no fewer than three times in two minutes. Knocking off a star for that. Knocking off another star for the fact that you can’t change the font at all. Otherwise, things seem to work pretty well. People who are complaining here about having to spend 99 whole cents for dark mode should seriously reevaluate things.

Dark mode IAPs: an accessibility perspective. For photosensitive users, dark modes aren't just an aesthetics choice. For these users, especially those looking at their devices all day, dark modes aren't just about being pretty. Dark modes are fundamentally required to make the app useable at all. Dark modes are an *accessibility* feature. They make the app useable in the same way that AssistiveTouch or VoiceOver do. Would you charge more for accessibility features? No. That would be terrible. Dark mode is an accessibility feature in exactly the same way other features are. Night Shift, True Tone, and the lesser known Reduce White Point aren't enough for some users: dark modes are the only way for them to use apps they can look at for hours at a time. Furthermore, some users have "floaters" in their vision caused by fluids shifting in their eyes. They cannot comfortably use black on white UIs as a result. Dark modes are the main way users with these floaters can interact with their devices. All that said: I realise that app developers need to make money. That's fine, really! I work as a developer myself. I understand. But charging for an accessibility feature is the wrong way to do it. I'd be happier making a *donation*, and getting nothing, than I am having to pay to configure the app to be useable in a way that doesn't cause me eyestrain and discomfort. Dark mode is an accessibility feature. I shouldn't have to pay to make the app accessible.

Nice app, but a few weaknesses. First, slow to sync with backends like Nextcloud. A few times I’ve even lost my edits. Also, I hate it when apps constantly nag me to leave a review. Ruins the experience.

A great “little text” editor. I’ve been looking for something like this for a while. I use it as a simple, no frills editor for small snippets of text that I don’t want to have cluttering up my more permanent documents.

Scary behaviors with OneDrive. Sometimes opening a file and closing it causes it to disappear from the file list. Refreshing the file list makes it reappear, but there is perceived data loss. Also, I have had sync conflicts from this app that caused weird split versions of the same file with appended numbers. Doesn’t happen working with OneDrive in other platforms or apps. Edit: down to one star. I just tried to save a file five times (including an app quit in between) and it never propagated. Need to make an exit plan to a new solution.

I had it so I used it.. Very Thankful to have had it on the market. The app was available for an IPhone 6 in 2019! I am easily in touch with developers to bounce ideas back and forth. I mean! I can even edit a review at anytime in any setting.

Awesome. So great... I keep lots of text files on cloud drives and its so easy to edit and update these files with Pretext!!!

Perfect Markdown Editor for iOS11. Full Files access, minimal interface and markdown preview = exactly what I was looking for all these years. There’s even a dark theme. The only feature that I’m missing is the ability to set a custom font (ala Textor). Hopefully that will be added soon, hint hint :)

please support Chinese. please support Chinese thanks

Needs more polish. Being nagged to write a review every time I close a document is unacceptable. Outside of that, the app is generally unintuitive (settings menu under the share icon?) and doesn’t even support common markdown extensions like strike through

Exactly what I need. I keep a journal in Markdown on my main computer, and Pretext allows me to view and edit journal entries on my handheld devices. So nice to have a simple program that just does what it says it does.

Great app but needs bug fix. Opening a text file from the Files app opens the file into Pretext fine. However, the only option (Close) on the menu bar does nothing when it should presumably terminate the app. This is a huge workflow impact for me as I modify VPN profiles often which can total over 30 in a given day. Please fix this ASAP! Many thanks!

Great utility. Pretext is a very useful text and markdown editor when you want something clean and simple. Occasionally I find myself wishing it had a search-and-replace feature but that doesn’t keep me from appreciating its utility. January 29, 2020: I reduced the review to three stars because it has started putting up a review prompt every couple minutes. Hopefully that will get fixed and I can give it back the lost stars.

Essential for on-the-go text-file editing:. I am not always at my desktop computer when I need to edit a text-file. Unfortunately, my iPad’s built-in software can view text files, but can not edit them. This app, therefore, comes to the rescue.

Great IAP model and perfect editor.. 10/10. Good editor, no complaints here. But where this app really shines is how it doesn’t force you to pay to remove ads or whatever. It just works as is, and if you want a dark theme, you can contribute towards his coffee or whatever. Props man.

Quite perfect for me. I needed a basic and functional markdown editing app to sync to iCloud so I can just write and access the files from either iPhone or iPad. I really appreciate the split screen mode for being able to see my day one journals entries side by side with a file I am editing on iPadOS. The app just fits inside my needs for writing and sharing those files where I want to work. The editing window is fantastic. Nothing there until i fill it. Please don’t change anything but if you happen to consider an updated version for iOS and iPadOS 14 a nifty widget with recent files could be cool.

Can’t select all, can’t copy paste. This is basic functionality that should be supported

Love the clean editor, where’s find/replace?. I love how this works easily with both on machine and in cloud text files. Very easy to work in, no worries about other stuff getting in the way. Now if the author could just include find and replace for text strings, it would be a five star rating. I hoped that was in the purchase, but no.

All this app can do is 'write' plain text & NOTHING else . . .. (Wish I could give only half a star): Yes, this is the free version, & honestly all I wanted was an app that writes pure text w/ no HTML/other convoluted markup. Yes, it allows BOLD, italics, & other mods, but who really needs that in plain-jane pure text? A nice feature would be the ability to search a fairly large saved file, but, you can NOT do that w/ this app: oh no, that would add waayyy too much convenience! Anyone know of a plain-jane app that writes pure text AND allows the ability to search? TIA!

Chinese or Japanese characters doesn’t work. Pls fix it

The app is really interesting, and I support the idea,. idea of using it as I think I need to go forward with it and make it a (never use this word) journey. this review is motivating me to stick with it.

It’s okay.. It would be hugely better if there wasn’t so much wasted space on the screen. Even in landscape mode, I can’t seem to utilize more than a third of my screen. Why?

Lots of bugs, slow loading. This is a 3 of 5 because the app takes about 10 seconds to load once I click on a document. Also once I have a few other apps open Pretext will lose the place I was at on the page. Other than that it gets the job done . I’ll be looking for less bug filled alternatives though.

Very nice!. This is a very nice app. Makes it very easy to access files on my iCloud Drive. There is one thing holding back on a 5 star review and purchase. Whenever I open a file and close it with out making any changes, it re saves the file updating the file modified date. When I open a file, and don’t make any changes, and close the file, then the last update date time should not be modified. Once this issue is resolved I will be a purchaser and a five star supporter.

It’s like Notepad for iOS, but a little better. Minimalist text editor. Free. Exactly what I needed. Easily edit text documents from any storage account linked in the Files app. Somebody complained you can’t print. But you can - on share sheet options choose Preview as Markdown HTML, once preview is rendered then do share again, print should be there.

Seems great, but seems to choke on external changes. I had a markdown document I was working on from my desktop, saved and closed it, and opened it on Pretext and added to it. Seemed great. When I reopened it on the desktop, the changes didn’t seem to write back to the file I had opened. Closing the app, I worked on the document more from the desktop. Re-opened the document in pretext from where I had saved it on my server from the desktop, and now none of the changes I had added on the desktop weren’t showing in the app.

Elegant.. This a great and relatively-simple app that let’s you create Markdown files quickly. It’s great to write a few things on the go, and then later copy the file into your text editor. I love the UI, it feels native to iOS, in my opinion. I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Can't open every plain text file. I have a plain text file with an unusual extension (sql) imported via Airdrop. The app doesn't let me open it. Also, there is no contact address provided where I could have asked for support.

Just wish there was support for Google Drive. I love the apps simplicity and interface I just with there was support for Google Drive.

Great plain text editor to edit directly. I use this for markdown and text files in cloud services and SFTP.

Table, local photo support!. You did a great job with the iOS 11 File APP. The problem I encountered is that this APP can’t display tables. All I see is text. I can’t see any photo within the same folder either.

Does exactly what I wanted. I just needed a text editor that worked with the text files on my phone. How hard was that to find? Pretty hard apparently. This app does the job well.

Good App. Would be improved if the user could set the default file type in Settings to .txt or .md - A new document would then be created with the user’s default type and extension.

Exactly what I’m looking for. Simple highlights, iCloud storage, no sign up sign in, what can I ask for more? Who need a note app eh?

Great app. I am really enjoying this writing app. Killer feature is the simplicity and straightforward interface with files - opening, saving etc from various locations. Other similar apps made this so convoluted. One improvement could need to make saving files with a new name easier. I am having difficulty with the app when I close my iPad and then reopen. The app freezes and then I have to reload the file again. Would be great if this was fixed. I would also like it if I could change the margin size in settings.

Very good text editor. This is a very good, extremely easy to use text editor. I would rate it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ except for two issues: 1. It's really hard to contact the developer for support! 2. The HTML preview feature (really useful it is to) has a problem. HTML Preview Characterset Problem: Non-ascii characters are not processed, instead show as random characters For example "…" (horizontal ellipsis) character shows as "…" and "—" (EM dash) shows as 'â€"' These non-ascii characters display perfectly in the editor pane. Hopefully the developer sees this and resolves it. Then I'll give him the extra ⭐️

No easy access to markdown formatting options. If this particular app is designed for markdown then it must provide a markdown formatting options toolbar above the keyboard.

Writing review to stop being nagged to. I have no idea how good or bad this app is, only used it for 2 minutes, was nagged for rating/review 4 times in that time.

Nearly perfect. All it is missing is the option to change the font.

A Solution I’ve Been Looking For but Flawed. I use Pretext as a note taking app for OneDrive. There are no note taking apps I could find that natively interact with OneDrive, but Pretext does via the Apple Files interface. This app does the trick most of the time but crashes when I try to load especially large plain text files (1000+ lines seem to break it). That is very strange considering these are just ~30 kb files we’re talking about. I hope this gets fixed soon. Anyhow, thanks for your work on this!

Notepad.exe for iOS. This was the Windows notepad.exe (or TextEdit on mac) equivalent for iOS I have been looking for. And I have finally found it, Alhamdullillah!

Very minimal and useful. Love writing with markdown, and this is a very minimalistic approach. Love an app you can use for free; this is everything you need and the upgrades are just the price of a coffee and potentially worth it too. Would recommend this app to anyone, especially those using a mor fully featured markdown app on their computer and want to make quick edits on the go!

Forced review writing is a bad first impression. I’ve been prompted to write a review multiple times in the first 10 minutes of having this app installed. I don’t even object to the nag. But at least gate it after I’ve been using the app for some time...

1 for constant review harassment. Literally have been prompted 6 times to review despite installing it 10 minutes ago.

Ignores icloud sync conflicts. Careful, this app does not present the ios conflict resolution screen when there is an icloud sync conflict. To replicate, do the following: Create a file.txt and open on two ios devices. - On ios device 1, turn off wifi. - On both devices write which ios device it is into the text file (for instance ‘device 1’ and ‘device 2’ - go to homescreen on both devices - turn wifi back on on device 1 - open the file on device 2. It now shows the freshly transferred content from device 1, and the content from device 2 is gone! - when you open ia writer, it tells that there is a sync conflict on the file.

Works with pCloud. This apps allows you to edit md files stored on pCloud. I use pCloud to sync my markdown files across all my devices. So I’m excited to find a FREE markdown app that works with pCloud. (Not sure if you need to install Files app first from the App Store to get this to work, but what’s important is it works)

Need to edit non txt extension files. :p

Some Google drive .md files don’t open. Not sure what the problem is but most of my newly created markdown files stored on Google drive are grayed out, so I can’t open and edit them. Worth mentioning I am also using my laptop to edit those files, but they always seem to be unopenable by this app :( Otherwise this app is exactly what I was looking for!!! Ditching Google docs :)

Rate popup on start. Is kind of annoying...

Quit prompting. This is the third time the app has promoted me to leave a review in the first 5 minutes!

Great for Simple Needs!. I do a bit of coding work via Dropbox and normally just open Sublime editor on my computer. So what’s a girl to do when there’s no such thing as Sublime for iPad and everything typed into a Dropbox file on the iPad isn’t in .txt format? Get this app, of course! I’m IN LOVE with the ease of use and simplicity! It literally does everything I need, and isn’t filled with frills or unnecessary things. Just let me do my coding in peace, thanks! For the record, I code on this app, then simply copy/paste into Dropbox. It just works for me :) Tried A LOT of other ‘simple .txt’ apps and they just don’t compare! Thanks!

Instructions?. So I had this app used it for a few second then deleted as it did...nothing. In fact even the files o was creating were not being f saved. Ie I would create a file call it “My file.md” click “Done” (only option aside from “undo” and then could no find the file again. I did in Files and in Dropbox. Even searched for them, sorted by Date etc. I did not see parser but looking at the screen shot it looks like menu options are available on the key pop up (which is very odd). I will try it again as I really want something like this but this is bare bones (I could create this app myself in less than. Day). UPDATE I just tried again. I’m sorry, I realize this is free but there is lot even a parser, the keyboard closet it’s are whack (meaning I can type the syntax faster than using f the keyboard shortcuts....no extended syntax...and worst of all...I am unable to find a single file I’ve credited. All I can say is I am pretty adept with the iOS and markdown etc. I’ve been writing x-callback scripts for years now...so I can traverse my way around apps and what-not...but either this app is no longer supported and doesn’t work for 13 or something. Again, I hate to leave a bad review but if it does t work it should not be in the App Store. My gut feeling tells me there are some oddity type settings that need to be set, but again — when I do t see I instructions that tells me what you see is what is.

Very basic.. I mean, it works. But it’s very basic. No shortcuts to quickly create headers, code blocks, etc. Also, as someone else mentioned, why is an accessibility feature locked away behind an in-app purchase?

Doesn’t work. Can’t create new md doc nor open old ones in non-iCloud drive- Useless!

Please wait! Pretext app comments loading...
