Caltrans QuickMap Comments & Reviews 2026
App needs updating!. Hi - I use this app regularly and lately every time I navigate the road map it goes to the FAQ page…. Thank you
Started to close itself - Fixed. The app is quite helpful, or WAS quite helpful when it didn’t close itself. Yes, I deleted and reinstalled but it continues to immediately close after it has been opened. Edit: fixed. Up the rating a star
iPad. Thanks to my apple support that spent hours on the phone with me. They had a difficult time doing it. But they did not give up! Thanks again Larry Eytcheson
Lives up to the CalTrans reputation. I tried this app on a trip up 395. To my surprise it had the route closed due to weather, last updated 5 minutes ago! It was a 90 minute trip to the closure… But knowing a little about the CalTrans reputation, I decided to drive it to verify the closure rather than scrap my vacation. Turned out the “Road Closure” was a sign that suggested motorists carry chains with them. Had a great vacation. Deleted the app.
CalTrans app is very well designed. Bravo !. Lots of easy to use road conditions info on this app.
Totally broken after last update. Since the last update, this Quick Maps app now immediately closes whenever I try to open it. I’ve tried everything and I’m also running the latest operating system on my iPhone 13. Total fail people.
SO HELPFUL. QuickMap is an outstanding resource when traveling in the winter. Up to date road closures, chain requirements, camera views, traffic slow-downs...etc. An easy to use but essential travel tool for navigating these winter storms and flooding that have changing conditions every hour.
Not current info. Downloaded this map to check the Grapevine closure. It opened at about 2:00 this afternoon. The app still says it’s closed at 7:00pm. Not helpful if it’s not up to date. The website has better information. Don’t waste your time with this app.
New fire layer useless. Thanks a bunch, without perimeters the fire layer is completely useless. Great moment to make the change.
They need to keep this update.. There is no chain-up area on this map. Shows road is good. And I am sitting at a chain up area. I would not have left so early and started my clock. This map is a great way to screw truck drivers over on time. Some need to get off there hind end and keep this map update!!!!
Feb 23 /// App stopped working. Use this app often. Always worked and was helpful. Specially long hauls for checking on open rest areas, cameras etc. as of today Feb 24,2023 the app has stopped working. Tried to redownload it and check for updates. So far no fixes. Hopefully they get this figured out.
Good traffic app with room for improvement. I use this app almost daily for planning a variety of commutes off the mountain from Big Bear and find the information provided to be reasonably accurate. It's especially handy when you need to know if you will encounter chain control stations before you start out on your mountain journey through stormy weather. I really appreciate no ads! For improvements, the "Warning" users have to click when the app opens is an unnecessary annoyance and should be removed - put it in a terms of use agreement to make your lawyers and app users happy. I would also like the app to be able to store my customized map regions rather than make me use screen gestures to draw the map zoom level every time I load the app to see my entire commute through multiple counties - It's not really helpful to select a county and still have to resize the screen. Let me create the Zoom level in a particular map location and then save that view in a memory with a custom name as is common in weather map apps. Speaking of weather, probably asking way too much, but I've thought many times that a weather radar layer would be handy on this traffic map app. Maybe you could team up with the ACME team at "My Radar".
Great for truckers in the winter. You can see all the freeway signs and warnings in real time where the snow plows are when chains are required, and when chains are lifted its dead accurate
Too bad it stopped working, during a major storm. If only it hadn’t failed and crashed during a major winter storm, you know when this app would’ve been the most useful. But since it did fail and crash this will has earned it the worse possible rating. Maybe try to make a app that doesn’t crash when needed most
App used to work but crashes immediately. App used to work but crashes immediately
Must have app for mountain roads. So so helpful, especially for tricky mountain roads and winter conditions. Knowing where chain control, accidents, etc are located is a life saver. Details about accidents help me decide whether to wait it out, go around, or stay the course. Google Maps could never.
Fav App Ever. 10/10 would recommend I recommend this app to everyone. I think this is one of the best apps. It keeps me up to date on everything and never crashes. I never have to wonder why I’m stuck in traffic with this app. This should be in a California Starter Pack. I truly don’t understand how anyone in California survives without CalTrans
Check for chains controls. 100% recommendations help avoid close road and you can check the cámaras
Very useful; need Terrain view. Easier to use than equivalent web page. Need to be able to change base Google Map view to “Terrain” (very helpful in mountainous areas). May as well also allow Satellite, though that’s less useful. The web version allow Terrain and Satellite already.
Ok but. Not as useful as the old San Diego real time traffic report which was excellent. This version actually manages to give less information than the RTTR which you could zoom into a single freeway and get a list of actual freeway speeds. This gives you 4 colors instead and doesn’t tell what they mean. You have to guess what red means and exactly where the threshold between red and orange might lie likewise or age to green. Wow! high resolution: 3 bands and some other 4th unknown one. Versus mph list, no contest. However it is a pretty map, albeit lacking in info vs the old one, so if they add some definition of the colors without me having to google for them plus bring back the old speed list view as an overlay somehow then I’ll give it a five.
App keeps shutting down. Tap on the app in shuts down, reload the app problem still exist
Unending Road Closures. Once a road closure shows up it never leaves. Example: a closure of the truck route by me from four days ago is still there. No wonder the trucks have been avoiding the truck lanes. The app is not updating. Bookmark the website and use that.
Great App for Travel!. Downloaded the app a while ago prior to traveling to Mammoth Lakes and what a great help. Use it daily while driving. Is there anyway the Locations can be EXTENDED to cover other parts of America? Just curious it would be great to have fire, road work / closures etc ... Tom
Good but. Can not tell when last updated. Critical with spotty cellular connection. I can not usually click on red symbol to get more info. Stuck in Mammoth and want to understand what is going in. Power line down, flooding, snow, wind, etc.
Poor substitute for San Diego Real Time Traffic map!. The SDRTT map gives/gave you the colors, but also the real time data from the freeway sensors. Red is slow - so do you want the 10 mph slow route or the 2 mph slow route? You'll never know which is which with this app. This has many details, like each ramp and transition, but if it's backed up you don't have to zoom to the ramp to know it's clogged. The SDRTT map had/has a link to the current CHP activity in chronological order, so you could easily see what events were affecting your drive now without having to click on all of the events. Don't make the state maps like Google, make them like the SDRTT map! Give us more info, not less!
When it works. I love the camera feature so I could see the actual roads. They used to work all the time But lately it’s touch and go. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. Hopefully this can be fixed. It’s been a long time since there’s been any updates.
Helpful app, but seems to be lacking an important feature…. This is a great app for checking road conditions in your area or along rural routes when traveling on vacation. It even allows you to view traffic camera views along routes, which is very neat! However there seems to be a very important feature that this app could use and that is having customer service forms integrated into the app. This can already be accessed via web browser but can be difficult to use at a given moment on the road. With that being said, a more user-friendly hazard-reporting interface inside this app will help those traveling the vast road system quickly report maintenance problems etc. and help keep CAs roads clean and functional!
Great App, but sometimes glitchy. It works great. Sometimes it glitches and closes, but it’s great. It’d be nice to be able to distinguish which direction signs are referring to before opening them.
Traffic cams. Why aren’t the traffic cams live why can’t they be video I hate the still images because they are not live and you can’t see cars moving can you please please update if you do I will give you 5 stars ⭐️!
Decent Info - Hard to Visualize. I mainly use this app in the winter for drives between the Bay Area and Tahoe. I need to know if roads are closed, and where the start and end of the closure is. Currently, this info is only shared via text like this: “CA / NV Stateline - Gold Ranch - Closed to traffic” I wish this info was visualized on the map showing the exact part of the road that is closed.
Only slightly helpful on its best day. The information is always hours behind what gets posted by Caltrans on Twitter. Also, the camera I need on a daily basis for safety due to fog only works maybe 25% of the time. Basically this app is just frustrating and doesn’t help me.
What a great app!. Has really good information!
Pathetic. If you want to find info about an area that isn't on the app's very short list of cities by using the search feature you are out of luck. It doesn't do anything. It is completely non-functional. This app never should have gotten past beta testing if it even was beta tested.
Keeps crashing. Saw a video for it so I thought I’d download it… but once I opened the app it crashed and closed so closed the app and tried again about 10 times (I also restarted my iPhone a few times and it keeps doing it. Please fix it
Not So Quick. CalTrans is slow to update conditions in the app. It is currently at least 12 hours behind their website.
Increase traffic coverage back. I switch to this app after google maps lower its traffic coverage to one mile on the streets, and now this app, should increase traffic coverage back to at least two miles. For now I will stop using this app too.
Map icons are small. Can you make the icons bigger on the map so they’re easier to see where the various items of interest are cameras, chain controls, CMS etc.
great app if it worked - but it doesn't. When app is launched, it tells me not to use it when driving and then exits at once whether I'm pressing ok or not. Since I'm not driving anywhere, but just quietly sitting at the table, trying to find the snow conditions in Bear Valley, this is kinda frustrating and is making app totally unusable as a result.
Great resource. Thanks for making this app to make access to all the caltrans info easy. It’s very helpful for planning long motorcycle rides.
Good app. Good app. Just one suggestion. I want to pinch/zoom on the cam pictures.
Great App for Traffic Conditions. This is a great app. Mostly downloaded to see traffic cams at will. However, the traffic cams only show a still image and not live video streaming. That feature would make this app even better.
iPhone Xr issues with location button. On iPhone XR, the location and refresh buttons stack on top of each other. This makes it hard to push the correct one. I can send screenshot if needed
PLEASE UPDATE THE APP!. Guys. Last update was a year ago?? Please, please, please. Update your app. There are so many issues and UI problems. Great place for valuable information but impossible to use given all the bugs in this app version.
Great app but crashing today!. I use this app to navigate all traffic but as of today, it crashes on opening. No updates seen. I hope it gets fixed soon. With all option layers on, this is the most comprehensive app I have found. I wish the fire layer were still active.
Very good App. I use this app for general information on CHP incidents and road conditions. Chain control info and location of snow plows in real time is very useful, as is the sign information. I have had no issues running this on my iPhone 11.
Disappearing App. I have used this app for well over a year. Yesterday, the app refused to stay open. I click on the icon, the app pops open, then immediately shuts down. I have tried reloading the app four times, and rebooting my phone twice. It has not helped. What the heck is going on? It’s not of any use if it doesn’t stay open.
App will not open any longer. As of today the app will not open or run, even after multiple deletes, restarts and installations.
Crashing. Needs update
The good and the bad and the meh. Very helpful that this app shows the locations of roadside rest areas (which information can’t be found on Caltrans web site or Google Maps). But the information on road closures is wildly inaccurate, showing closures that don’t exist and missing those that do exist. This could actually be a danger to people who rely on it for mountain driving. The rest is just repackaged info from Google Maps and Waze, but since Quick Maps has so little accurate and useful info of its own, yours better off getting your traffic and incident info from Google or Waze
When it works it’s great but.... Often times the CHP alerts, messages signs, and closures don’t show up.

Useless. Warning comes up “ close this app if operating a vehicle” and closes by itself. Im sitting on the couch watching tv
Typical CalTrans laziness. Kind of useless if CalTrans doesn’t provide accurate and up to date information.
no communication. cant ask questions
If Only It Worked!. This would be a really cool app if only it worked. I have tried loading it on both mine and my wife's iPhone 6's and everything functions except the chain control display? That is like the primary reason I want to use it. I would love some feedback if and when it starts working with iPhone 6. Thanks Rob
App won’t open. Clicking on app, then immediately closes
Update needed to include customer service requests. Please update the app to have the capability to submit customer service requests.
Poor info and many times outdated. Poor info, you can’t click on many many triangles and symbols to find out what is going on, on a road. Piss poor, but what do you expect for a government site?
glitchy. if the map wasn’t so glitchy i would give it a five. good information, just need to fix the map.
V2.1 addresses the performance issues. Thanks
Lose the nag screen please. Useful app, but annoying pop-up reminding me to close the app when operating a vehicle is like saying don't run with scissors.
Super buggy. Won’t stay open on my iPhone. Opens for a quick second, then it’s gone.
Looks promising. If this is updated quickly then it will be extremely useful because I drive for a living. It has a single place to go for traffic, accidents, closures, etc. I especially like being able to click on the cameras for live shots. Thanks, CalTrans. I'm sending a link to everyone I know.
Not as bad as their website. The quick map data is great for commuters, but the website is terrible on mobile. This app is less terrible.
Chain control symbols not displaying. The chain control symbols show up on the website but they don't show up in the iPhone app.
Dump the google maps.... Pretty good information but using the lousy google implementation when there are maps built in is not ok.
Great app for Portugal even. We are visiting Portugal and I watched a YouTube video on the new turbo Roundabout in San Benito county and wanted to look at it and opened it and it showed in great detail the roads and traffic conditions in the Lisbon Portugal area. This will be a great help planning our trip to the Lisbon airport tomorrow
Garbage. Tapping on Full Road Closures on map comes up with info for locations nowhere near the one I chose. 20 miles away in some instances. Yes, I zoomed in close. What kind of crap is that?
Not accurate. It doesn’t accurately show all winter chain control locations on highways, or road closures
Crashes instantly. As soon as you open it. It crashes instantly
Needs Updating. Northern California, north of Santa Rosa, is not kept up to date with traffic incidents.
Cameras are not live. Only just downloaded it, but it doesn't seem that there is any motion with the cameras. Just still pictures. Otherwise good for chain control and stoppages, etc.
Chain Controls work now. Now that chain controls work, this is my go-to app to see what's happening on CA roads. Best part is being able to click on incidents and see details of what's going on. Coolest part is being able to see what's displayed on all the freeway message signs.
Bug in App. The App shuts down moments after launching. On iPhone and iPad.
happy truck driver. Thank you caltrans for the app, this is my first year as an otr driver, 1st time chaining, 1st year going to other states. This app has helped me in my trips recently. Every state should have an app like this, makes it so much easier. However it is missing the conversion of text messages from radio broadcasts. Excellent job spread out the word about the app! seems nobody knows about it ?.?
Map. Only works on WiFi
Absolute Junk. Caltrains incompetence never ceases to amaze me.
Chain control!. Yes, needs chain control information. Until then, will use on-line version.
Great app for traffic. Love the way you can see the times on the Caltrans boards and also the up to date info on traffic incidents
Great app (except). No chain control symbols? Once this bug is fixed, it will be perfect.
Useful app - easier to use than website. Nice, easy to use app to find road closures and such, especially with all of the floods, mudslides, etc. recently. Not the most feature-filled app but certainly an app that has a slot in my "travel and commute" folder.
Version 1.6.1. Great app chain controls working in this version.
Live cameras gone?. Only reason I use this is for live cameras. But they’ve been replaced with still photos. What happened?!?
App Crashes immediately. I’m on iOS 16.2. Crashes immediately.
Daily. Very stable and useful, I use it several times a day. Factual and timely information. There was a brief crash on 2/24/23. I contacted app support and the problem was resolved within hours.
