Blink Shell 14: Legacy App Description & Overview

What is blink shell 14: legacy app? This is the Legacy version of Blink Shell. Download the new free version Blink Shell instead from https://itunes.apple.com/app/id1594898306.

Current users are grandfathered to keep receiving updates and new features. We are keeping this version alive to ensure a smooth transition.

Thanks for understanding.

We had no choice. We had to build Blink or we were going to jump out the window in frustration over the tools we were using. We started by analyzing what the must-haves were and we ended up grounding Blink on these four concepts:

• Fast rendering: dmesg in your Unix server should be instantaneous. We can't wait even a second to render. We didn't need to reinvent the wheel to make this happen. We simply used Chromium's HTerm to ensure that rendering is perfect and fast, even with those special, tricky encodings.
• Always on: Mosh transcends SSH's variability. Mosh overcomes the unstable and intermittent connectivity that we all associate with mobile connections. You can check your Safari without fear of having to restart the SSH connection. You can flawlessly jump from home, to the train, and then the office thanks to Mosh. Blink is rock-solid connected all the way. Mosh is readily available and can be easily installed on your server. Go to https://mosh.mit.edu.
• Best Keyboard Support: Blink embraces Bluetooth-coupled keyboards with gusto. Some like Caps as Esc on Vim, others Caps as Ctrl on Emacs. Blink champions them all. During your always-on sessions, you're in your zone.
• Custom Fonts and Themes: We know how important it is to have your terminal, your way. That's why we include a selection of fonts and themes, including Powerline variants. And if that isn't enough, you can create and add your own.

But, Blink is much more. Please read on.

• You should command your terminal, not navigate it. Blink will jump you right into a friendly shell and it'll be clear to you how to roll.
• The interface is straightforward. We dumped all menus and went full screen for your terminal. Use swipe to move between your open connections, slide down to close them, and even pinch to zoom!
• Configure your Blink connections by adding your own Hosts and PKI keys. Synchronise with iCloud. Everything will look familiar and you get to work, fast!
- We've incorporated SplitView and multiple windows, for those necessary Google searches and chats with coworkers.

Blink is open source software. Participate in our community, and don’t forget to leave us your feedback and your feature(s) requests. Enjoy!

Great. For the most part, this app is exactly what a terminal app should be. I was hesitant to drop the cash on something I couldn’t try, but I’m glad I did. Much more responsive than that other SSH app, and more ability to change the appearance to make using a terminal on a pad more pleasant.

Key Transmission is not as Expected. EDIT2: 7-Nov-2019 Caps as CTRL is not working again. Not sure what is going on, tried the following: 1. Check caps-as-ctrl + uncheck caps modifier 2. Check caps-as-ctrl + set caps as CTRL in modifier 3. disable caps + try (1, 2) from above. EDIT: emacs undo now works! Thanks devs! Screen rotation issue also seems mostly fixed! Great ssh + mosh app. Recommended. While it's great that the developer offers key-remapping some keys like Ctrl+/ (undo in emacs) do not work as intended. This prevents it from being the 'pro emacs' 20$ app toted by the devs. There are a few other key transmission issues as well (see GH-issues page). This, plus there are a ton of resizing issues where 1/4 - 1/2 of the screen is non-usable until a new session is started. Resizing should be a trivial problem to solve. Please resolve this! Overpriced for a terminal program that cant resize properly and can't transmit vanilla key-bindings.

Excellent terminal but frequent behavior changes. Blink is awesome and pretty much part of my daily routine. That said, the behavior changes pretty frequently and it’s not always better. The latest release (13.4) for example changes the way scrolling works. Is it cool that people can use a trackpad? Yes. Do I have one? No. So when the changes to support that feature change how terminal scrollback functions (something I use *all the time*), it’s troubling. Where I used to be able to go back in the buffer by pulling down the screen, now I just get the equivalent of an up-arrow at the command prompt or a mouse scroll in vim. I even commented on this in the TestFlight builds. The release comment suggests we move to tmux/screen to get scrolling. While that’s a great suggestion, it really shouldn’t be necessary to maintain the behavior from before the change. And really, even when I do use tmux, I don’t have mouse mode enabled so I get to change my flow (again) to manage scrollback and copy/paste. So, at the end of the day, Blink is very cool. It’s pretty much the best terminal app available for the iPad. Having mosh is also very cool. On the other hand, if I’m using Blink and mosh, I should not be forced to use tmux. I guess it’s back to plain old ssh for now; scrolling seems to work there. Well, at least until that changes.

First impressions? Whoaaa baby! This is fantastic!. Only been using it for 30 minutes, but so far I really love it. Never thought I’d have an app I loved this much on my iPad. That said, it has only been 30 minutes. I’ll update this review after I’ve used the app for a longer while.

Absolutely love it!. App is getting better and better, one of many best parts is that there is no subscription!!! I hope it stays that way, in-app-purchase is fine ;)

Impressive and Fully Featured. Im been in IT for 35 years and used all sorts off SSH clients. Many clients, you can get for free but in today’s world, IT staff require cross-platform usability and the ability to sync settings among all devices. Mosh is also great. Theres one SSH client thats able to do all this but its subscription is thru the roof. Blink is getting close to achieving this, syncing across iPhone, iPad, and M1 Macs. Thats all that i actually require. The only issue i have is with the M1 (Apple Silicon) Mac, if you right click on the app, it crashes it, every single time. I know it wasnt originally built for that device, so its still a five star app. But it’s on my wishlist of future updates and would complete all my SSH requirements.

Best tool for developers. What can I say. I submitted an issue three days ago (and it was not at all an emergency) about loading fonts. They gave me temporary solutions the next day, and guess what, they fixed that bug today..... It’s not cheap, but definitely worth it.

A bug I’ve noticed. Using the up arrow for history removes the spaces in the command. Also I know the workaround for the alt key but it would be nice to have something more intuitive than mapping it to escape. Otherwise a very valuable app that works well.

Straight to the point SSH/Mosh. I was hesitant to buy this app, then I found out that it was open source. I went to the GitHub repo, building instructions were very clear and straightforward and it took less than 10 minutes to build and install on my iPad Pro. After using the app for two weeks, I could help but buy it from the App Store, the app is really amazing. I like how it just starts with the shell and only uses the UI for configuration, any CLI user will appreciate this. Airplay support is very good. Mosh support is very well done. Built in UNIX utilities are great Adding the following features would be great: - Light/dark themes that sync with iOS - iperf3 added to the built in UNIX utilities - Rectangular text select fo easier selection when tmux panes are used.

I might have low requirements. I used panic prompt 2 for a while, and it was fine, but the cursor was often difficult to find and the font selection was limited. Blink has more configuration options, so I can get a nice clear font and a blinking cursor. Hooray! Other than that -- it is a ssh client, what do you want?

Great app but where’s the docs?. Love the app but, hate the fact that there’s absolutely no documentation. Figuring some things out feels like Easter egg hunting. Once you figure it all out and you get mosh running, it’s great. Downside to mosh is that you can’t scroll to see anything that’s “left the screen” and the scrolling is kind of wonky; Control-L becomes your best friend with mosh.

Hands down one of the best terminal emulators for the iPad. First, of all, mosh. If you don’t have mosh get mosh. Fully, whole heartedly, changed my whole development experience. This terminal has great support for it. Some commands compiled have issues with their standard flags but whatever I guess. I can work around it a little bit. But overall, this app is the most iOS compliant terminal emulator I have seen around. Good freaking job devs. Honestly. However, please respond for the non-standard command flags. I use a lot of port forwarding and some of these commands are missing their port arguments. And I know it’s open source, but I don’t have a Mac to sign and load with and I payed 20 dollars. Please help.

Turns the iPad into a true dev machine.. This app is amazing. Hands down better than all the other alternatives in the App Store (and I've tried them all). It supports mosh, and supports other features that no other apps support such as sane keybindings and key re-mapping. I also love that Blink is open source and am more than happy to pay the $20 this costs in the App Store to support this stellar app. Prior to trying this app, I had relegated my iPad to a YouTube/text machine since none of the SSH apps I tried worked well enough for me to use the iPad full time as a dev machine. If you have an iPad Pro with the Smart Keyboard and are itching to use it for development then do not hesitate to buy this. (This app is ranked way too low in the App Store search results.)

bluetooth + emacs actually works; nuff said. Every other terminal emulator I've tried has at least one usability deal-breaker. Here, even ESC-x and Ctrl-_ behave completely normally. With a mosh connection, I can literally flip open the iPad and resume a remote coding session in seconds. At this point, it's almost possible to dump the laptop entirely.

Excellent product, support, and community. I’m a SSH newbie, learning how to create instances within the cloud, so I was both very interested in the Blink application for many reasons: being able to SSH into my instances using only my iPad (giving some definite freedom there!), and because of all the rave reviews that are out there. I had to learn quite a lot about public and private keys and moving them around for access, but I was able to successfully thanks to both Carlos Cabanero, who was exceedingly helpful and friendly, as well as a few community members who answered my question right away. Frankly, I was surprised to get such helpful answers, I felt embarrassed about asking things that I felt sure marked me as Newbie from a mile away :) But, anyways, now I’m able to SSH into my AWS EC2 instances and I couldn’t be happier..

Best of its class. Blink has been my main work tool for some 3 years now (I'm a prof web developer). The UI is amazing, they truly nailed it, Mosh is of course what makes it so workable (sorry plain SSH, you're out, reconnect is a must) and they do consistently reply to my bug reports on GH issues. Way to go guys!

Mosh and Tmux really are a big improvement. I’m not a heavy user but using Mosh with Blink has been awesome. The predictive interface really reduces lag and makes using servers with my cruddy home network much more enjoyable. Definitely snappier than ssh. Thanks for all the work and I appreciate that it’s open source so I could build myself if I’d like.

Blink, the hero we need but don't deserve. It's 20-gosh-darn-19 and if I want to lay in bed with my iPad watching Star Trek on Netflix in a floating window while writing Dockerfiles in vim mosh'd in to a tmux session on an EC2 instance there's not a thing in the world you can do to stop me. Being able to write that sentence was alone worth $20.

Power User SSH Client. Unfortunately, I found Blink _after_ I had tried every other SSH client (paid apps) out there.. After hearing about mosh, I decided I should give Blink a try and it does not disappoint. Of all of the clients I’ve used, this one is definitely the one for power users. It’s CLI-centric interface is robust and works great on iPad Pro! Love it! Keep up the good work!

Developer grade remote shell. For context, I write software for a living. I spend a lot of time in a shell. My workflow involves Tmux, Vim, Bash, etc. To may my experience a little nicer, I use some nice fonts that support things like powerline, git info in my bash prompts, etc. Blink alone allows me to use my iPad as my daily get-stuff-done computer. I don't carry a laptop anymore. Blink handles my entire config style. It was the first iOS shell that handled my CLI config and displayed it without issues. But it goes so much further. When using Mosh, your connections are virtually indestructible. I can connect, do some coding, disconnect for the weekend, come back, fire up the app, and it's like I never left. Absolutely amazing for an iOS shell. It also handles port forwarding! If I want to connect to a remote debugger from my browser, for example, I can. No problem. There's really nothing I need to do that I can't with Blink. Amazing work everyone involved!

really happy with this. I'm using the iPad Pro 10.5 for many of my day-to-day work activities, including slack, zoom, confluence, jira, and so on. Sometimes, I want to work from another room or location without moving my laptop, and ssh kept getting disconnected. Blink's mosh feature is incredible. After getting a no-ip domain and mapping some ports on google wifi, the iPad has become a legit dev device.

Great SSH Client. Works wonderfully. I used to use iSH, but it was lacking satisfactory cursor support (copying text was a huge pain)—this is not an issue with Blink, the level of polish overall is great. I will say I wish there were more local tools available (vim is a big one that’s missing), but no doubt it’s a lovely terminal emulator.

App is crap. None of the file transfer options work.. I and many others paid a lot of money (as far as apps are concerned) for this program and none of the file transfer options work. So SCP, SFTP, none of them work for transferring files from the shell to the various remote computers. It’s basically completely worthless now. It worked when I bought it but after an update about three months in, none of it works anymore. It’s some issue in libcurl but even still, this is something that needs to be made a priority for those of use that didn’t install from github. Pretty upset about this frankly. Don’t waste any of your money. There are many other shells out there where file transfer actually works.

scp and sftp are unusable. scp doesn’t bother asking for the key passphrase. For all I know, it can’t even find the SSH key, as it’s not in the .ssh directory. Does not provide a real shell, so eval `ssh-agent` is impossible. Changing the key passphrase in the config command is impossible as the option is unmplemented. ssh-keygen -p crashes the app outright. For whatever reason, SSH key files aren’t in the standard .ssh directory. sftp is literally just a copy of the same broken scp program, not an actual SFTP client. This sort of fakery is completely unjustified. It makes the app look much better on an initial viewing without deserving that.

Great but lacking some critical features. This is an amazing client that unfortunately lacks some important features for my use case, namely port forwarding and agent forwarding. Port forwarding in particular is important in order to be able to do things like develop on a remote server and use the local browser to test it without having to export the port to the world.

Wonderfully useful.. Update: Pretty happy with this utility. Developer was responsive with an issue I had with nonstandard ports. ————- While it works fine if you have ssh set up on port 22 it does t work at all with a nonstandard port. I get a “ Socket error: Unknown error: -1” I wish I’d known that before I brought it. Update: thanks for the response. I did use the -p option and that is what led to the error. Ok, I tried using -p before specifying the address and it worked fine. This is different from the way ssh usually works on a standard shell where -p can be after the address. Please fix this so others don’t write this nice package off.

Very good terminal emulation. Very good, very fast terminal emulation. Intuitive setup for folk familiar with cli. Very easy to import keys and configure hosts. Support for multiple color themes similar to those found in common desktop terminal emulators. mosh support is really nice. It is a little pricey but I definitely prefer this to some free or cheaper alternatives. I had been using Cathode for a while and look forward to this replacing that as my daily driver for terminal needs. My one very minor gripe is that when using the apple magic keyboard and swapping caps lock for control they caps lock led still lights up. If any of the devs see this and can fix that that would be pretty neat. It isn’t a real big deal and the swap functions as intended but looking down occasionally and seeing the green light turn on and off is a little annoying.

Persistent connections- worth every cent. Worth the price just for the fact it persists ssh sessions while you switch between apps, such as to research something in Safari. With other ssh client apps your session gets closed after a few seconds and you have to start all over. Not with Blink!

You broke my favorite feature. I have been using Termius for awhile, since they implemented my favorite feature from Blink. On the iPad smart keyboard, using the stupid caps lock key as control modified. I just tried Blink a few minutes ago, and here is what I see: The 'Tab' key prints some sort of special unicode character (copyright or at sign). The CapsLock key properly maps to 'Ctrl', but then any key-presses are not echoed. Although these keypresses aren't echoed, they are taken as keystrokes. If you press CapsLock again, it is back to normal. This effectively makes the CapsLock keyswap with Ctrl unusable. I do not even think the Tab key works out of the box. Just to verify this wasn't an iPadOS bug, I upgraded from iPadOS 13.1.3 to 13.2.2. Some improvements with the 'tab' key, but caps lock mapping still not quite right. I have diagnosed the issue. The mapping between Caps Lock and Control is functioning properly. However, the CapsLock key, whether mapped or not, is acting as a toggle key. So, if you press 'CapsLock-A' it properly goes to the beginning of the line (emacs mode). However, if you now press 'F' 'F' 'F' it goes forward one character at a time. The same is true for 'U' (clear line) and 'C' (INTR). If you then press the CapsLock key again, the 'Lock' is toggled off.

Opinionated in ways that appeal to me; smidge unstable. I prefer Blink(.)app over its current competitors. My biggest complaint is that segfaults and outright app crashes occur too frequently. If the selling point is persistent remote logins, then the client app must be rock solid and this one isn't. More stability and I doubt I'd shop for other clients; as it stands now it remains my go to, but my feelers are up for a replacement.

Does not support IOS internal keyboard.. Using the on screen keyboard tying a / requires three keystrokes. Guys do you really use ~ or the back tick (lower case same key) more than the slash. I rather doubt it. B o o. On youse. 3rd party keyboards are NOT the answer. An option to add a key or replace the ~ or its buddy makes much more sense. Rather than get carried away with toys, colors etc why not make this thing useful for those of us who who it as professional admins/programmers. And there does not seem to be a way to ask questions. That said I’m not sure they care about the internal keyboard. If you’re a ssh/Unix shell user this is for you. I do not use windows or Mac workstations. With blink I can just carry my iPad. Totally works whatever you know how to do, you can do only any server you can ssh into. It’s easily a five start if the slash did not take three (that’s 3 fellows) keystrokes.

fantastic app for mosh/ssh. This is one of the best apps I've used for ssh in iOS. With mosh built-in, plus tmux on the remote side, I have never lost a session. There are a few irregularities with colors, but other than that it's flawless, and the other built-in commands are very helpful. Key remapping couldn't be easier, so turning caps lock into escape is a simple configuration option. Thanks for making such a great app. It's an indispensable part of my workflow and has allowed me to move to an ipad pro as my primary workstation.

Not without its quirks, but the best terminal for iOS there has ever been. I suppose the title says it all. Once in a while I accidentally open a second tab and have no idea how I did it, nor can I type anywhere. It takes me a few minutes to remember how to close the tab, and recover my ability to type commands.

Best yet!!. I’ve tried a lot of ssh terminals for the iPad. This one is by far the best. Runs tmux perfectly thus far. This is obviously written by folks who spend much of their lives in a terminal like myself. Also, it can handle data fast. For example, had a python program spitting out fast serial data from an arduino... handles it like a champ. Not so much for the other popular iOS terminal program I was using. Another great thing- I can now use solarized theme. This app is pricey, but if you do a lot of terminal work, could be well worth it for you.

Finally!. I’ve been looking for an App purely for remote development over ssh. This requires good support with Magic Keyboard. After trying almost all of them, this one is IT! For whatever reason all the other Apps were missing 1 of these most basic features: * Copy & Paste ( without screen jumps and touching ) * Key repeat when pressed Thanks team. I’ll be on the beach!

Best out there. Out of all the ssh terminal programs i’ve tried on the ipad pro, this is the best. Its the only one that allows me to send all the key combos I have for the tmux sessions in my remote machine. It allows me to scroll using the touchscreen. Useful features keeps getting added.

Great except when buggy. I love the idea and I want to love this app but paste sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t, and ssh for hosts set up with keys via config apparently doesn’t work at all. The repo suggests this is a known issue, so I’m disappointed it wasn’t mentioned in the description for a paid app. I will spend more time trying to get it working, because I think it has potential, but for now I would warn you this is an experts-only app, if you’re not comfortable running ssh with -vvv then wait for it to mature.

really excellent and innovative. Continued investment in developing this app has made it my tool of choice. Particularly I’m a fan of the latest keyboard — having a command key modifier on the touch keyboard is a simple, unique but incredibly effective feature. An excellent professional tool. I’ll add that my 2nd favorite feature is the ability to send arbitrary hex codes with keyboard hot keys. The flexibility here is amazing.

Best SSH client on iOS (I've tried them all). Wow!! The font rendering is so awesome in this app! It even looks better than the terminal on my desktop, if you can believe it. I also like the text based app commands … perfect for the kind of geeks that would use this app. Can't wait to get mosh set up. They keyboard shortcut setup is the most natural that I've encountered so far. Looking forward to getting to know this app better.

Glorious key repeat! (Oh, and everything else.). Absolutely the best terminal I've used in iOS to date. Everything renders correctly, every key works as I expect, everything is speedy, there is no bulky user interface taking up 40% of the screen, key repeat actually works, selection with Vim keys is amazing... I could gush about this for days! So far the only con has been the price. Thankfully, though, it's open-source so I was able to compile and run it beforehand as a trial. And I'm glad I did! It's definitely worth the price after confirming that everything works perfectly.

So good. I’ve been using this app for several months now after switching from Prompt. It’s simply amazing, the way mosh sessions get restored between device reboots/jetsams is like magic. It also works really well with hardware keyboards.

Just buy it, great bluetooth keyboard support. The most annoying thing about all of the terminal apps is they do a really poor job of mapping shift-arrow, alt-arrow, etc to the equivalents on the console, most just don’t support it at all so you end up trying to remember arcane CTRL meta combinations to, for example, switch panes in a tmux session. This one “just works” and it makes the bluetooth keyboard operate very much like you’re on a local USB 102 key keyboard. I often keep large tmux sessions running on my development machine and this is the most “transparent” feeling app. The others clutter the screen real estate with “helpers” you have to press. I wish I’d found Blink earlier, I’d wasted a fair amount of money on the other terminal programs, all with annoying issues. Blink is pretty seamless, I only need to take my hands off the keyboard to close the app.

Completely replaces my existing SSH client. This app is awesome for anyone working on remote servers using their iPad. It’s responsive, easy to use, and very reliable. My ONLY issue is that with iOS 11 on my iPad, whenever I go into split screen mode, something goes funky and I get a bunch of ‘up arrow’ requests in my tmux sessions.

It just keeps getting better. Blink is now my absolute go to for Mosh and SSH. The continued quality improvements just keep making it better. This latest round improves all kinds of keyboard capabilities making it on par with desktop keyboards and even works around Apple’s removal of the near-mandatory ESC key. What I really like is that the author hasn’t gone overboard with unnecessary features nor unnecessary minimalism. The app strikes the right balance and has the feel that they use their own application for real work. The performance and reliability is great — exactly what’s needed from a terminal application. It’s also with that Blink has a number of diagnostic tools in it as well for helping to solve network issues. (e.g. when a host isn’t responding, or when T-Mobile LTE won’t allow ssh and you should activate a VPN).

Current version drops and hangs mosh connectons. The previous version of Blink was great -- I can open a mosh connection, switch to other apps, and switch back to resume working on a remote machine. After upgrading to the current version, the connection hangs when I switch back to blink after using a few other apps (e.g., Chrome, then Slack). This forces me to create a new window + mosh connection in order to resume my tmux session. However, this leaves increasing numbers of detached mosh connections on the server, and I have to periodically run "killall mosh-server" to clean things up. Would not recommend upgrading since the features did not appear to increase.

Overall satisfied. I was a bit hesitant to buy this at first with the $20 price tag, but I’ll say now I don’t regret it one bit. I’m a Software Engineer by day, however I use a work computer and didn’t have any dire need for a setup like this. I merely wanted to experiment with programming on an iPad for some side projects. After a couple days with Blink I am blown away by how fun Coding is on the iPad. The multitasking nature of the device coupled with Blink/Mosh makes for a great environment to get work done in. Anyone that’s on the fence about this I would say go for it! For the record, I only briefly tried one free alternative out there but I really preferred the interface and customizability of Blink which was ultimately why I made the purchase. No menus and just a terminal is all I need!

Would Recommend. I honestly can’t believe how great this app is. Blink is incredibly fast, incredibly stable, and incredibly intuitive to use when you’re comfortable in a terminal. This is by far the best terminal app I have used on iOS. It’s a downright pleasure to use.

Fully featured SSH client for a good price. I switched to Blink from a popular competitor’s app because the competitor’s app kept losing my session after being idle in the background, even with mosh enabled. That particular app offers to solve that problem if you’re willing to pay them a hundred bucks a year under the subscription model. No thanks! Blink is highly customizable and flexible. I wish I had installed it sooner! Sessions stay up without issue and come back even when I switch networks, thanks to proper mosh support.

Best terminal app for iPad. Seriously, this app is worth every penny. Having mosh from my iPad Pro connected to all of my servers without interruption when switching networks is awesome. The simplistic configuration utility, complete fullscreen focus on the terminal, and ESC key mapping make this terminal app a must purchase for system administrators on the go.

Nice shell but not useful to copy files in my experience. I was initially really impressed and will probably still use Blink to access remote servers. However, what I specifically purchased it to do was to upload files to servers while on the road and at that it has failed miserably. I’ve spent hours trying every variation of scp and raw curl commands since that is the underlying command it is using. I’ve removed passphrases from my keys I’ve done everything but enable passwords on my server and set the password to 1234. Using the same key that works perfectly to ssh, I continually get “Authentication Failure”. I almost gave it two stars for being a decent ssh client, but even that crashes regularly.

great connection stability, nice design. The most important thing is that this app doesn’t drop your connections or nag you about keeping them open when you background it. I don’t know how, but it keeps them open. Secondly, it has really nice design. Extremely minimal and streamlined, you can find features when you need them, but it does what it should and gets out of your way so you can work. The key mappings are also a great feature when using the Apple iPad keyboard. I am retracting my earlier criticisms because I think it might have been a pebcak issue. It is possible to set up hosts so that when you think you’re asking to connect to an IP it can get mapped to one of the hosts you’ve set up. So great app, sorry for the earlier criticism. It’s still a bit flakey after your session crashes (that tab breaks) but I can live with that. This app is worth five stars because it means I can actually use my iPad.

A1. As good as it gets. Nothing else to say.

Great and well polished terminal. This is an excellent and well polished, professional app. It does need to be used to log into a virtual machine, though. It would be good if it had vim included (it does not at least in this version).

Great shell, Worth the price. Blink is a joy to use and clearly shows the developers not only use shells but know what makes a shell perfect. Minimalist with everything controllable from the keyboard. iPad mannerisms that infest other shells aren’t found here. This feels like exactly a terminal from the moment you launch. Colour themes are well chosen including the excellent coding friendly Solarized. VIM has never looked so good. Combine it with an iPad Pro keyboard, remap Caps-Lock to escape, and use MOSH for remote connections. Superb!

Good Shell. Given the price this should be getting a lot more updates. works ok but buggy since iOS 11 especially with features like split screen on iPad Pro.

Worth every dollar. Clearly built by IT people who have no time for nonsense. Works a treat, especially in combination with ZeroTier. I spent a while thinking scrolling was broken but it turns out that’s a feature of mosh rather than anything to do with Blink. Wrapped it in tmux and now I’m good. 👍

Brilliant app. It just works. All it needs is Eternal Terminal support!

Beautiful and streamlined. Ok, so it's not intuitive and you need to spend a little time figuring it out - particularly getting mosh set up. But once it's going it's a lovely experience. On my iPhone XS Max it's something to behold. Finally I can be really productive on the move.

Terrible app. This have to be one of the worse app I have ever came across of. Very poorly designed and not worth it at all.

You Get What You Pay For. I use Blink Shell on my 12.9" iPad Pro, usually with an external keyboard, and it's amazing. As a non-professional, my main use case is messing around on a headless Raspberry Pi, and I previously used Termius for this. I initially hesitated on this app because of the price tag, but now that I bought it I couldn't be happier. Mosh performs so much better than normal SSH. I've opened Blink after almost a week without touching it to find that Mosh has maintained my session, and it has never dropped a connection on me after a month of use. I love that Blink drops you straight into the terminal. Even though I'm not a professional I can tell that this app was designed by people who use it every day, and who put a lot of thought into how the app should work. It feels like a professional-grade tool, and as such the price is fantastic (especially because you're only paying once). Plus, since my Smart Keyboard doesn't have an escape key, I just remapped CapsLock to escape in Blink's settings. Amazing. Overall, I can't recommend Blink enough. Whether you're a pro using it for your job or just a shmuck like me messing around on home servers, it's the best tool for the job and you'll be glad you didn't cheap out.

wow. pretty impressif !!!! thnks to the developers

use with monitor. Currently Blink does not work with an external monitor connected to ipad with Apple’s lightning to HDMI adapter. It does work with a different adapter and/or when Blink is one of two apps in a Split View.

Almost perfect!. This truly is the missing app if you’re a software developer wanting to have an iPad as a backup device. There are 2 small things missing for me: * cmd+k to clear the history. I didn’t realize how much I use this command until I couldn’t use it. * option+delete and option+arrows. Super handy for quickly jumping between words or quickly deleting words. I’ve also been having trouble setting up my caps lock on my magic keyboard to trigger escape. Might just be a me problem though.

I now leave home only with my iPad Pro!. I can now take care of my servers on the go using mosh and finally VIM properly without worrying about my sessions shutting down while « sshing ». It just made my iPad way better than it was before. I agree, there are some great alternatives out there but I’d rather give my money to developers of a FOSS. Keep up the good work!

The app that makes the iPad Relevant for some.. Blink is kind of incredible. It did everything I wanted an ssh client to do, but it also did a few things I didn’t even ask for, but ended up being really useful. This is as close as we’ll get to having emacs on an iPad, for one. I don’t know what to say. I’ve used other ssh clients for the iPad, but now that Blink has arrived, I’m not interested in the others. If you haven’t set up Mosh, do yourself a favour and set it up. It, plus tmux, is a game changer.

Awesome app. Really like all the features! And especially like the fact that there is no bloody subscription! Like some other apps

✌️ swipe up not working. Hello there, I’m frustrated right now. With two fingers swipe up not working on iOS 13 it became almost impossible to use your app on iPhone (i.e. without external keyboard). Please fix it! Thank you!

Lets me leave my MacBook at home. This is the app that has let me take my iPad Pro as my travel computer; it’s fantastic. This is the first time that I wish I could have paid more for an app, ‘cause mosh support for iPad has changed the way I work.

Worth every penny. I hesitated with the price tag, too. But eventually decided to buy it. I have to say it met all my expectations and MORE. It’s fast and reliable, works well with VPN. And the pragmata font itself is 200 euro if you want to buy it... highly recommended!

How to copy/paste?. not sure how to copy/paste

Help?. Devs, do you have an email address for support? Lovely app, but I've spend quite a bit of time on your web site, looking through documentation and I can't find answers to some simple questions like: how to disable the extended keys bar when I have an external keyboard attached? I've followed your support link here to your github page and I don't know who's username to ask. Hoping you can respond to this review.

Great app. I am really happy with the money I paid. My job requires me to work on centos terminal and rn with this app and the smart keyboard that I got, Working on a bus feels no different than working behind my desk in my office. Great response time and full screen terminal feels and works great. However, the key alternatives (which allows you reconfigure some of the keys) are not working for me. CapsLock is still doing its annoying job, changing the language. But over all I am happy with this app and I can’t wait for future updates.

Works ok. Can’t import a key from clipboard, doesn’t show me where the keys are stored. Can’t connect to my google server but I can connect to digital oceans. Not sure why probably googles fault. Overpriced.

Perfect SSH Panel but.... I really love the integration that is offered here...the only part i missed is a capability to scroll up when using mosh, is either I have no clue how to scroll or it is not the functions, but doesnt seems listed anywhere. Other than that this apps is perfect. EDIT: Thanks for the update thats very helpful. I wish I can add extra star for the review😅 And maybe just a feature request as the PR close, I think native split screen support will be awesome 😁

On screen keyboard doesn’t go away. On screen keyboard doesn’t go away when using a physical (microsoft) keyboard, even though the descriptions say otherwise. The screenshots are also misleading as there is no way whatsoever you can interact with the terminal while getting the full viewport without either the docked on screen keyboard or the floating keyboard blocking the view. Absolutely useless. JSLinux based terminals in the browser, or browser based serial consoles that vm/cloud providers provide can be interacted with in a sane manner without the keyboard blocking the view. Please refund now. P.s. please don’t tell me that my bluetooth keyboard which works correctly even with my refrigerator is the problem.

THIS IS THE SSH APP YOU KEEP LOOKING FOR. Straight up. Without getting into minor nitpicks, this is hands down the best and only SSH app you need. I’ve spent a lot of money and time on various free and paid ash terminals, but at the end of the day, NONE OF THEM WOULD USE THE FULL SCREEN REAL ESTATE. Blink uses your full screen, no menus taking up space, no status bars proving pointless info. It pretty much gets rid of the GUI (as it should be when using a Terminal) I feel like these developers are the only ones to understand the elegance and minimalism of terminals and brought the essence to mobile devices. All the other SSH apps are a waste of your time. This is the one you keep looking for at the end of another brutal mobile SSH experience. Yes I know you think it seems expensive as its not free. But it’s well worth the price. I will now actually use SSH on my phone but before this app I wrote it off as a gimmick and would just pull out my laptop and tether cellular data. This is the only SSH app I can actually use in lieu of my Linux or Mac machines. I don’t just use Terminals as a worst resort either. I truly live in them using things like byobu, Vim, MC, and a never ending list of terminal based apps. I hate GUIs with a passion. And I hate other wasted screen real estate even more. I’ll stop ranting now but trust me if you actually want to SSH/MOSH on mobile and get a similar experience to an actual laptop or desktop than this is the app you need to buy and stop wasting time with other ones lol.

Amazing terminal emulator. Flat down the best terminal emulator on iOS, and one of the best ever anywhere else. Mosh, key mapping, console commands, full mouse support. Once you are in the app, your hands don’t need to leave the keyboard. Don’t waste time and money with any others, Blink is full of features and a joy to use. The team is very quick to act, and keep updating the app. For example, with the addition of mouse support in iPadOS 13.4, text selection stopped working. A few days later, they published an update that fixed it. This sounds like a sales pitch, but I am in no way related to the developers, I just think this app is fenomenal. I would gladly pay more for extra features, if that helps the team keeping it up to date.

Blink rocks!. They just released a huge update which now supports ed25519 keys! This app is my main terminal app on iOS. I primarily use mosh and now with the ed25519 keys, it’s perfect! Big thanks to the developers who worked to create this great app.

Making my iPad my ONLY computer. I’m a web developer and this has allowed me to make my iPad my only computer. Using Mosh I can get on my Digital Ocean droplet and work on my client sites without any hassle, usually. With the latest update on October 31 2019, Blink has become very unstable. Keys simply don’t register correctly through to my VPS so I can’t type keys like Shift, or ; or a number of other things. Blink is awesome, but beware it seems to be in a bit of a buggy state right now.

Keep the updates coming. Mosh works flawlessly - keep the updates coming and you’ll have us for life

The command line for iOS. Thank you

Scripts?. When could run shell scripts?!

One of my favorite tools. Consistent, simple, and highly usable. Blink is a top notch utility.

not able to reconnect. This app went down the toilet a while ago... it is no longer worth the price tag as it cannot successfully maintain a mosh connection. Do not buy it.

Best terminal application for iOS. Mosh is a game changer for shell in iOS.

SCP is broken. Some users have had limited success trying to connect via SSH2 first, but that doesn’t work for everyone. If you’re looking for an app that will allow you to scp files, look elsewhere. This is an issue that has plagued Blink for over TWO YEARS and they still haven’t addressed it.

Incredible. By far the best and most professionally done terminal interface on iOS. Worth $100, hands down.

Blink is excellent but there's a bug in the version that runs on macos. I can't seem to get copy paste to work with the mouse. As soon as I go to select text it's popping up a menu as if I was holding down the control key while dragging the mouse.

Best SSH Client for iOS. In field where’s many competitors Blink Shell stands out in every possible aspect. Simplicity of Blink is the key thing that keeps me here, and it’s my prime tool for the last 8 months. Pleasure to work with it. :)

my brain. cannot handle how broken pasting text in is. ive never seen anything like it

is this a scam? this looks like a scam. how is it that i can ping my servers by name or IP, but the moment i attempt to invoke mosh or ssh i get either 'socket error' or 'did not find remote ip address'? this seems to be essentially just a hyper-expensive 'ping' utility

external display support broke. I can not use this app for demos or presentations because the external display support is broken on iPadOS 13. Please fix, I am using a different app now because of this broken feature.

Ssh key working after uninstall and reinstall. I uninstalled, reinstalled the app and ssh keys are working again. Thank you. This is the best ssh client in the App store. Thank you!

Doesn't save passwords for FreeBSD. I added several hosts I work with, Linux, and FreeBSD (10.x, 11.x, and 12.x). For the Linux hosts, it logs right in. For the FreeBSD hosts, it prompts for a password, even when I've already entered one and saved it for the host.

The real thing. This is the one, admins. You can leave your laptop at home and still get some work done. If you have an iPad, get yourself a Bluetooth keyboard with an escape key, and you’re set.

Contains some hidden gems. Press and you’ll see handy tools like netcat, nslookup, ping and whois. It even does scp and dig... You get some real shell power in your hands even before arriving at your jumpbox. Awesome.

Not working on 2018 iPad Pro. Spent 20$ for nothing.. Have heard great things about this app, and would love to update this review once this issue is resolved. When I launch the app on my 2018 iPad Pro, I get a black screen for about 20 seconds before the app crashes and closes all together.

Most used app. By far my most used app.

Still evaluating. Had some early trouble but might be my iPad. Neutral ATM.

Touch keyboard broken on iPad Mini. none of the additional keys are displayed on the top. ios 14.3 iPad Mini 4

Unlock mobile development without sandbox limitations.. Blink shell is by far the best terminal emulator for iOS. It supports mapping the otherwise useless caps lock key to escape for vim's modal editing with the hardware keyboard.

Wonderful tools for heavy terminal users.. Those basic features are essential for me: SCP Port forwarding Background running

Excellent terminal/ssh client. I’ve tested almost everything out there in terms of SSH clients for iPad, especially with the Magic Keyboard. Blink is the winner — great support for SSH & Mosh, very speedy text performance, and works very well with the Magic Keyboard, including key repeat in Vim. Great work!

Good app. The core functionality works well and mosh support is useful. But some features feel sort of thrown together. For instance, how do you remove a theme after importing it by accident? I don’t think it’s possible.

Let's face it: this is the best ssh app on iPad. I really enjoy this nice app. It fills all my needs for a ssh app on iPad. Now I can confidently do serious work my servers using my iPad. It also don't need subscription, which is what I'm a looking for.

Wonderful!. This is the best shell I've found on ios hands down! I love how everything is a terminal command

Best Portable Shell. The lack of a good ssh shell was the only reason I was bring my laptop on business trips. Now that Mosh is available, my laptop can stay at home.

Indispensable. I cannot imagine using IOS without this.

Mosh + SSH is awesome, file transfer is wonky. Love Blink for the mosh/SSH feature, works amazing for that and what I bought it for. The scp/sftp commands do not function as expected and appear to be curl wrappers, take odd arguments (like a mandatory local file for sftp) and do not appear to work. Additionally I’m unable to get iCloud file sharing to work (I can use link-files to pick a folder, but when I try to cd in and ls my terminal breaks). Would be awesome if this works as expected! If you just need mosh/ssh this is still the best bet!

no response on iPadOS. blink is the best shell client ever on mobile device, any other shell client is too heavy to shell enthusiasts despite one problem on ipad. It will freeze on an opened shell on ipad after I reopen it. It occours ramdonly on ipadOS but iOS. i can not do anything on this circumstances not able to ⌘ w, reopen doesn’t work either. Device: iPad Pro 2018 cellur iPadOS 14 15 tested

wonderful mosh client. keeps sessions alive in the background with ease. best client i’ve used for iOS.

Really the best ssh app for iOS. Love it. Crazy convenient UI. Obviously the the best. It’s totally worth the money!

I don’t know how to use it. It doesn’t have a Instruction manual.

The best SSH client. Definitively the best SSH client for professional use in my opinion. An update for the new iPads would be welcomed (to avoid text cropped at the rounded corners - aka safe areas), but even in its current state, it is most definitively a 5 stars app.

Pretty good but missing key feature. This app is missing the ability to add shortcuts to the home screen for specific servers/specific ssh keys. I want to launch into the appropriate session with press of 1 button from home

Full-Blown Emacs in iOS!. You know that warm fuzzy feeling you get when things work the way you like? Now I have the power my Mac and GNU/Linux terminals and Emacs in my iPhone /and/ iPad! Fast and responsive. Keep up the great work!

Blink is Exceptional!. I have used many ssh and terminal emulators for my iPhone and iPad. Without a doubt, Blink is simply the best! There is not a close second. I run Ubuntu on a server at home. I have provided firewall access for ssh and mosh. (I had never used mosh previously, but it is exceptional and easy to install on Ubuntu). My primary client is my iPad Pro with a floating keyboard (and occasionally my iPhone). With it and Blink it’s like running Ubuntu on my iPad. The keyboard is easily configurable so that the Cmd and Meta keys work flawlessly in Emacs. This works so well that even when I am at home and have access to my Ubuntu Box, I prefer using Blink and my iPad instead. And, yes, I also use Blink to access my MacBook. Another great feature is scp. A onetime set up of ssh-keys allows me to transfer files from my sever to my iPad or the reverse. Finally, the Blink client has a surprisingly robust subset of Unix terminal command including mv, cp, grep, host, ping, telnet, etc These are really great to have locally on an iOS/iPadOS! My only slight, slight complaint is that the up/down/left/right key is very small when using the iPhone, without a regular keyboard. An additionally useful command would be nmap (or something similar). There are apps that do this, but it would be great to access my network with tools I really know. (This is aspirational request, but an apt-get method to download more local commands or tools would be great!) Another feature I would really like, but I believe is an Apple constraint, would be robust ssh-tunnels. I really can’t recommend Blink enough. To be clear, I don’t often write reviews. This may only be the second time I’ve written a review and I’ve used Apple products since the release of the original Macintosh in 1984 . . .

Cannot select text. Text selection is broken. Unable to select text on screen to copy. Would be 5 stars if this gets fixed. Love the app but I need to be able to select and copy text.

Perfect. Absolutely perfect. Everything I could have asked for in a mosh terminal client for the iPad. Theme support is excellent. This is how you do professional productivity iPad apps. A+

Nice but please fix mirroring or add AppleTV4k version. Mirroring is partly broken (on screen keyboard), but I’d really like to see an AppleTV 4K version.

Amazing... wish I could give them more money. this one app takes the iPad from a toy consumption device to a pro level developer tool... best app ever made for the iPad. Thank you for making this app.

Very impressed so far. So far I am extremely impressed with this app. It is performing far better than the ssh app I was using previously, which would lose connection to the server after switching away from the app for 1-2 minutes. With Blink, I have closed my iPad for hours, opened it up, expected to have to start a new session, but it is right where I left it. Colors also seem to be better supported in this app. Vim color schemes look the way I would expect. There are lots of other innovative features, such as the ability to map caps lock to Ctrl, which I sorely missed in the other ssh apps. $20 was quite expensive for an app, but I do feel it was worth it. It has allowed me to continue my development projects without buying an updated laptop, since I can now use the iPad much more effectively.

Cannot type Meta-<. I am using emacs. Meta -< and Meta-> are two must-have shortcuts for going to head and end of documents. But it is not functioning in blink shell - it types period “.” instead.

Love it and use it everyday. This app rocks, the mosh support is amazing, I use it for all my ssh connections and daily devops tasks.

does what it is supposed to do. Slim, efficient and fit for purpose.

Best Mobile Terminal. Can't recommend enough. Powerline font support, custom themes, and very minimal interface. Needs newer SSH key support, but that's being worked on.

PgDwn and up. I do not like the new version completely. Previous version I could scroll down fast with the, essentially pgdwn and pgup button but now I can’t

Not what I was hoping for.... I was not a Mosh user before trying Blink, so I didn’t know what to expect. I suppose what I was hoping for was SSH but always-connected, like 30 seconds after switching OR 3 days. You can get that by using Screen or tmux (as you can with SSH) and there is some integration for connecting to a session when you log in, but it’s pretty basic. What you get out of the box is a blue banner across the top of the screen that displays a clock that starts ticking once you hit a key telling you how long its been since it saw the server. Auto reconnect? Nah... don’t want to go and reinvent typing ;-) Just a confusing escape sequence you can’t actually type on a native iOS keyboard. It’s Ctrl+^. Yeah, they actually used the most common abbreviation for the control key as their escape sequence (And the character you end a sentence with)! So it’s actually Ctrl+Shift+6+Period Worse there is enough lag when entering the sequence that you have time to try something else, so unless it’s the last sequence you try it won’t register. And since there is nothing you can do with one of these disconnected sessions other than recycling the terminal, why even bother? Just tell me connections X,Y and, Z got disconnected. So that leaves us with a lag free SSH replacement... I do mostly systems administration from my terminal, I type a small command and look at lots of output, and I refine... so the tricks Mosh uses to keep interaction fluid are lost on me. Perhaps if you are using an interactive editor remotely to program while riding in an elevator? Compiling C++ on the subway? Don’t use a version control system... I’m really not sure. Even aligning themes is a clumsy process involving pasting a github link.

Yes. I'm just going to answer your question: yes it's worth your money. Buy it and use it.

Makes my iPad a full dev box. The recent updates to support tmux scroll with the trackpad is just AMAZING! This has always been the weak point of using remote shell on the iPad. This makes the iPad unbelievable for remote shell work.
