GLOBE Observer App Description & Overview

What is globe observer app? GLOBE Observer invites you to make observations of the Earth around you. Observations you collect and submit with this app are designed to help scientists better understand satellite data collected by NASA from space.

The current version includes four capabilities. GLOBE Clouds allows observers to make regular observations of the Earth’s cloud cover and compare them to NASA satellite observations. With GLOBE Mosquito Habitat Mapper, users locate mosquito habitats, observe and identify mosquito larvae, and reduce the potential threat of mosquito borne disease. GLOBE Land Cover is designed to allow users to document what is on the land (trees, grass, buildings, etc.). GLOBE Trees asks users to estimate a tree’s height by taking pictures of trees with their device and answering a few questions. Additional capabilities may be added.

By using the GLOBE Observer app, you are joining the GLOBE community and contributing important scientific data to NASA and GLOBE, your local community, and students and scientists worldwide. The Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program is an international science and education program that provides students and the public worldwide with the opportunity to participate in data collection and the scientific process, and contribute meaningfully to our understanding of the Earth system and global environment.

So disappointed. I’m a cloud freak. I take hundreds of cloud photos a month. This app is so clunky and slow that i have to delete it after only one day and a few tries at making observations and taking photos. So sad.

Yay. :)

Nice to be useful in a larger way. It’s a great feeling to have able to help on a larger scale I hope that everyone’s work is utilized for the greater good. Update: really sad that this app doesn’t not run. I wish I could even say that it kind of works but it doesn’t. Just crashes and never fully loads..... Come on team .... we can do better than this !!!

Cant change password. There is no way on either the app or the website yo view your account and change password even though a goigle search says there is a way. I guess that’s why they send you a pw. If just this part is not functional then I am not hopeful about the rest.

Cloud chart display issues. I just downloaded the app and the cloud ID chart isn’t loading properly. The images showing cloud types load for a fraction of a second and then disappear. I’m on an iPhone 6s with iOS 15.2. Thanks.

App crashed trying to create account. Not sure if this is the right app for nasa

Fun and educational. Highly accurate tree measurement app. Double checked with a clinometer and it was spot-on. Fun to be helping ICESat-2 and NASA.

Great for Students!. I love this app!!

Everyone should do this. If you want more information about this app go to YouTube and type in “NASA need your help to improve its space laser”

Can’t get photos to upload. The app just hangs up when I try to submit data, saying that the photo is being uploaded. Plus the user interface is very poorly designed. It tells me I have no observations but two of them are shown. Plus there seems to be no way to export, say in spreadsheet or GPS format, the data I have collected. I would have expected much more from a technical organization.

DESIGN. Dear NASA, as a science devoted designer, I love this app and the motive behind it. I’d love to contribute to it in any extent I can as a global citizen, but I’m a UI Designer & Art Director and the current condition of the app hurts my heart. I really think it can be designed much more intuitively and it would be incredibly fulfilling for me to work on it. Please see my design portfolio: beyhka.com. Hoping to contribute to NASA with my experience in design.

Great to participate. It's great to participate in something to make satellite observations more accurate however, on my iPhone 6S it zooms in taking photos narrowing the sky view and under representing cloud cover. Most of my pics look like fairly clear sky when I am 5-6/10 cloud cover and distant CB and TCU aren't shown.

Cool! But.... This is a neat app and I feel like I can do my part for science. But my one complaint is that updates take too long. Contrails dissipate before I can even report them.

The good, the bad, the ugly. This NASA app is ok for collecting data and documenting. But data display interface clunky, circa 1997, and limited for both mosquito and cloud app sections. Maybe NASA will consider integration with WorldView or as layers in Google Earth. Though other apps exist that are far more responsive and better at realtime data display, layers and options (like myradar and flightradar), none allow user data input. Though NASA is a gov't entity, would gladly buy an app or layers for another app with better spatial and temporal mosquito and cloud data display. A real opportunity for collaboration with NASA and myradar exists.

Crashed after iPhone update. I learned to use this app so I could contribute to the data collected by citizen scientists during the 2017 eclipse. I continued to collect data for the entire summer and autumn with no problems. The UPSIDE was the reward of the current worldwide satellite map that I could view after I submitted my data. The eclipse was mind blowing to view from the satellite view but the devastating fire season was the most interesting thing. I posted many screenshots of these things to Facebook. I also was fascinated to follow typhoons and hurricanes, and I often knew about them before they were reported in the media. The problem came with the iPhone update I installed last winter. The camera portion of the data collection quit working correctly, also there was no way to submit a report from the ‘Pictures’ portion of the Globe Observer app. I have updated my iPhone and deleted and reinstalled the app a few times since and the app still does not work. I am looking forward to the Globe Observer app being updated so I can contribute again. But perhaps NASA does not need this info anymore. It was fun while it lasted.

Works well mostly. I’ve been using the app for cloud observations for about 2 months. It consistently works well and smoothly for the most part with easy to follow guidelines on making the observations. I am reducing the rating by 2 stars: 1 off for the cloud observation chart. I use an iPhone. When I try to open the chart, the cloud photos flash in their assigned boxes for an instant and then disappear. And 1 off for the fact that I tried to contact support twice about 2 issues and only got automated replies which were not helpful.

Great citizen science!. It's great to contribute with this app, and it is pretty well designed and stable. One thing I would like is to be able to have phone notifications for when satellite flyovers are about to happen. I've missed plenty of opportunities just losing track of the time.

One of my favorite apps. A really well thought out way to use the power of mobile devices to take meaningful measurements of my local environment. And get feedback from NASA! (For the Clouds module). Fun and easy.

AI. Is this data being collected for machine learning?

Crashes. I expected more professionalism from this app. It crashes and very minimal. If you don’t set your location, or forget to, you have to enter your lat/long. After that point, it’ll crash. Zero point in downloading. Deleted.

Ob. It doesnt let me open my observations it just keeps loading and loading forever I have tried different devices and uninstalling it and nothing

Glitchy. Terrible UI. Compass won’t calibrate at all. Shows North as being SE. The photo feature locks and you can’t escape the screen. They need to fix the compass calibration and the photo capture feature, otherwise the app is entirely useless because the data can’t be used.

Basically useless. I can't send reports. I keep getting a 401 unknown error

Great app. Great information and resources. Awesome app with lots of info and resources.

Cloud observations 👍. Despite what others have said, this works fine on my iPad. As a ninth grade teacher I am going to try to figure out how to work this into the curriculum.

Great!. I like the app a lot. I honestly think it’s awesome. But I did feel a little uncomfortable saying yes to giving away my location. Great app overall though!

Not compatible with iPhone X?. Hi Team, Starting to wonder if this app needs an update. . . I have downloaded your app onto my iPhone X. Running the latest Apple software update as of 29 March 2019. The app is forever ‘installing updates’ with the loading gear spinning around. The app is not yet at a point where I can use it. I will edit this comment if the app finally installs it’s updates. We are 15 minutes and counting so far with this ‘installing updates’ situation. . .

Why. It takes so long!

“Installing Updates” - resolved :). Users, please be patient, this works - you may try to close the app and then open it again, it will install updates and then be ready :)

iPhone stuck on installing updates. As title suggests. App is broken

Oppppp. This is some dancccc stuff do check out

No button to take photo.. Entered all data. Went to take photo and it shows control overlay... But not photo button. Does "Done" take a photo? Very confusing

Good idea, a little buggy for something from NASA. Using the cloud clouds app to make note of sky conditions is fairly easy, there are menus that describe how certain clouds and conditions normally appear which aids in classifying the cloud cover and other environmental factors. However the photo submission portal is hopeless. If you submit your own photos fine, but the native one on the app does not have any prompts to have one submit photos, it has a button that says 'done' which when pressed does absolutely nothing and doesn't take you to another menu to review your observations or submit photos- so you have to exit out of the app to go anywhere. Great idea for an app however very amateurish deployment and a tad puzzling considering the organization allegedly behind it
