Dragonfly Damselfly ID App App Description & Overview

What is dragonfly damselfly id app app? The Dragonfly ID app is a comprehensive and easy-to-use resource to find and identify dragonflies and damselflies across the US and Canada. Geared towards both the avid dragonfly-watcher, and beginners, Dragonfly ID will help you find spots to look for dragonflies near you, help you identify the dragonflies and damselflies you see in the field, and learn more about the species you find.

Additionally, Dragonfly ID enables users to easily view and submit Odonata sightings from the field. This important citizen science project enhance our understanding of Odonata distributions and abundances.

DISCOVER SPECIES AROUND YOU
• View species lists for any location in the US or Canada based on sightings in the OdonataCentral database
• Filter to show recent sightings, or for any month(s) of the year
• Bar charts of seasonal abundance built from the OdonataCentral database of sightings
• Maps of recent sightings from OdonataCentral

LEARN
• Use Smart Search to quickly identify a species by color, size and habitat
• Read descriptive text to help confirm the identification (contact us if you'd like to help!)
• View the crowd-sourced gallery of images (contribute your photos at birdseye.photo/dragonflies)

ENGAGE
• Submit dragonfly sightings to OdonataCentral directly from the app (BUT SEE NOTE BELOW)
• Track your life list via the app for any region
• Sign in with an OdonataCentral account to see your sightings populate your life lists

NOTE: this first release of sighting submission has MAJOR limitations:
• Sightings cannot yet be edited after submission. We are working on it and it should be just a matter of a few weeks. In the meanwhile let us know if a sighting urgently needs to be edited or deleted.
• Currently sightings do NOT go to OdonataCentral, but they will at some point in the future (~1 year?). In the meanwhile they will be visible within the app in a different color than regular OC sightings.
• Sightings submitted through the app are NOT vetted by OC experts

Dragonfly ID is a collaboration between BirdsEye and the folks at OdonataCentral and the Xerces Society with special thanks to the membership of the Dragonfly Society of the Americas and users of OdonataCentral, the Migratory Dragonfly Partnership, and PondWatch for their data contributions.

Lots of potential, great info!. There are TONS is species of dragonflies in the world, and this app has excellent information for someone to learn about each species. However, as an “ID (identification)” app, there needs to be some improvements made: when one needs sees a dragonfly in the wild and would like to identify it, you would seemingly need to scroll through all of the species until you found a picture that matches what you saw. Maybe the developers can put in some kind of ID features from plant- identification apps or bird-identification apps, such as an Identification Engine/Interface: wing markings, abdomen/tail markings/color, thorax, location, etc….. or maybe even a picture identification feature.

Good app but freezes. I like using this app to look for dragonflies and damselflies in my area but it often freezes and won’t work unless I leave it alone for some time or delete and reinstall.

Useage. This app will is perfect & helps to ID different species of dragon flies while you're outdoors observing them.

Dragonfly app is excellent. It is developed by the same folks who developed the ebird app.

Crashes when “range” tapped. Most of the time, anyway, and a bug in definite need of squashing. Otherwise excellent. . ..

Great app. It is really nice to have ID information with you while observing dragonflies and damselflies. It has helped me a lot. Easy to use. Me nice reference photos.

Excellent. Very helpful and well done ap.

Love this App. I have long been fascinated with Damsel Flys, and Dragon Flys. This App is great!

Finally. I've always wanted to learn to identify dragonflies, and now I can!

Great app!. It's very handy to have an Ode field guide on my phone and tablet. I'm looking forward to more additions and improvements. Keep up the good work!

Awesome. Enjoying the end of the season. Can't wait until next year. Very intuitive design!

Dragonfly App. 'Finally the dragonfly app is here!! Yay!!! I was waiting for when this was going to happen. I love it. Great! 👍🏻

Helpful for novices. Very helpful app for those of us who need some ID help!

❤️🌻 to The Odes App Team. Amazing and well done. Thanks Guys !!! It would be nice if more of humanity would help the world out a little & utilize such wonderful apps as this 🎯😎👍🏾

Beginner's dream and great support for others. Excellent and filling in with more and better info.

Crashes all the time?. I'm slowly getting used to the awkward user interface, but a problem that does not seem to hold away is that the app almost always crashes when I select the "Range" option.

Great App. Very happy with this app. As with it's sister apps I know it will grow and improve over time. Quite happy.

Good field guide. This app is more thorough (not to mention more convenient) than the last physical dragonfly field guide I owned, though unfortunately it crashes when I try to look at the ranges of some species. I hope it will be updated with a fix sometime.

CJ. I guess it’s a good app. Unfortunately I have forgotten my password to log into the website. I have tried many times to have it send me a link but it won’t. So the app doesn’t do me much good.

Deleted immediately. Didn't last 5 minutes on my phone. No app should require you to enable locations services. If I just wanted to browse species, I can't unless location was enabled. Worse, I could not even get to browse species. I wants me to create an account. Why? Why do I need to have an account to browse species? None of my other field guides require this. Some suggest it and add an extra screen to navigate through which is bad enough. But this one won't let you proceed unless you register. Just buy Ed Lam's book on dragon and damsel flies. It does want to know where you are and doesn't require an account.

Great app with potential. Nice to view dragons on the fly.

Has a lot of potential. This app, like the Odonata central website, Is only as good as the data people put into it. As more and more records are submitted to OC, This app should improve. One feature that doesn't seem to work is the map filter. It would be very handy to know what species are native to a given area, but I can't seem to get it to provide that information. The nearest I can come is greater New York City which isn't much use for me.

invasive. I should be able to use this (and any other app) without revealing my location.

Was Very Helpful. I’m still (now after 3 years) hoping for restoration of the ability to look at records by specific location as detailed in my 3 star review below. That was *very* useful to me. The app remains minimally useful for my purposes but I’m disappointed in the lack of upgrades these past three years and the missing functionality. I wish I had not upgraded to version 2. *** My review below (which was rated 5 stars)was in reference to the version before the major update more than a year ago. The older version was more useful for me. In particular what I have been missing in this version for the past year+ has been the ability to look at any destination I might be traveling to and then look at locations in that area where users have reported dragonflies, click on that location and see what had been seen there filtered by timeframe (ie if I’m going to be there in mid-June reports from September are almost certainly not relevant). In the current version since the revision it is no longer possible to look at a location to see what dragonflies have been found there. One must start by choosing a species to see where it has been found, but even then it is not possible to see what other species may have been found at the same location without going back to the list of species, choosing a different species and looking at its locations. The old version was very useful for looking at the big picture of what might be flying in a given area at the time of a future trip so I could plan my side excursions for dragonfly outings when attending a class reunion, for example. The app is no longer very useful for that and I use it much less than I used to. ****** Dragonfly ID has helped me have a much more productive year in terms of whittling away at some of my Lifelist goals. I've been able to find and photograph several speciesi would not otherwise have found on my travels but also not far from home. It's not perfect but a very useful tool and still being developed so I'm looking forward to additional enhancements!

New user. Looks good to a new user. Good ID function.

Very useful field tool!. Now I have a tool to help identify dragonflies and damselflies. No more saying "hey look at that cool dragonfly!"

Great app for finding and identifying dragonflies!. Dragonfly ID is the first app of its kind and will continue to get better with the help of users. Very similar in function to BirdsEye Bird Finding Guide. Keep up the good work!

Great for finding locations. Very useful to find dragonfly locations near you; good life list feature. Not much help for ID. Room for improvement on OC synch.

Very helpful. I'm new to dragonflies - this is so good for me to narrow down and identify what I'm seeing. The photos of males, females, juveniles at different angles is so useful. Would highly recommend.

Login invalid. I have a valid account I can use on the internet browser, but the app will not accept it

not helping me. ...but the App Store ate my review - sorry.

Photos. Photos are excellent, and info is helpful. I am just now learning more about the dragonfly.

Great app!. I have used this app for about a week now and think it is a very powerful tool for folks who are frustrated by the books that eschew color and color patterns for things like "male appendages" and "female subgenital plates". While I don't deny the relevance, but they assume that you are looking at pinned specimens that have lost their color and they are hardly friendly to those who wish to just ID the bug in the back yard! The location tools are a great innovation aid to shorten the list of possible species you must consider at any one time. If you want to browse species, that can be done with the "find by name" feature. I look forward to watching this tool develop further. Great start!

Love this thing. Helps a lot for beginners.

Great app - very useful. A few things to add.... This app is a fantastic tool for field and office. The Field Guide is great, but could use more photos at diff angles. The option to submit observations is something recently added, and can I say a great big THANK YOU! This offers the ability for you to upload observations straight to OdonataCentral - a huge time saving device. The only thing lacking with that, is that you cannot submit an observation without linking it with a species. This is impractical because so many species photographed will be unable to narrow down to species without closer scrutiny, but having the genus documented is still valuable data. Also it eliminates a great resource in amateurs documenting things. Except for the very obvious common species, the general public will most likely avoid submitting an observation unless they can put "unknown" as the designate. I encourage the developers to add the ability to add a couple of categories for submission... - unknown damselfly - unknown dragonfly And perhaps categories down to family... I.e. - unknown forktail - unknown meadowhawk Etc... Apart from that addition needed, and the addition of "regions" or "states" for search ability, this app is GREAT and worth 4 stars. Thanks once again, David

Needs improvement. Should be able to submit a photo to search, if I knew the name I wouldn’t need an app

Powerful and unique tool for Odes. I'm a birder who has recently been bitten by the "bug". This app is fantastic for someone like me. Pluses: I love being able to see which species occur in any area by month. That saves me from going through the whole book to find what lives near me. I also love being able to filter by color, size and habitat. I love being able to sync my list live from OdonataCentral so I can see a list of nearby species I haven't seen yet. Maps of nearby sightings from OC give me ideas of where to go. Drawbacks: ID text is still a bit weak and/or missing for many species. A few species have too few photos. Realistically anyone even slightly serious about identifying dragonflies is going to need a field guide in addition to this app. Bottom line: it's free, it has its limitations, but it provides features that no book can. It is powerful and unique. Love it!

First app of its kind a great success. There has never been an app like this for dragonflies and damselflies before and it is a great success. Information on identification with fantastic pictures provides easy learning for beginners and advanced dragonfly enthusiasts. Also fantastic for locating great spots to look for dragonflies.i would highly recommend this and will give it 5 stars

Dragonfly. Lots of pretty pictures.

great app - super useful. This app provides excellent ID tips, range maps, and photos of all or nearly all the odonates in the U.S. the ability to filter by state makes finding a match to my photos fairly simple. Highly recommended for anyone wishing to learn more about the most astonishing and colorful aerial predators in the world.

Excellent. Great field guide!

Love it.. Simple, precise identification. No fuss. Love it.

Great app!. It is great to have such a good app to help identify Odonates in a jiffy. I love the pictures, and the maps are great to help have a quick idea if a particular species could be where we are. Also, the descriptions are helpful in the field.

wonderful!. An excellent resource that I've been waiting for for too long! Wonderful photos, info, and date-specific information - even recent sighting maps for recently-submitted species near me! A couple of notes for improvement: 1) please, please supply clasper/hamule/genital plate diagrams or photos for species in tricky groups like Bluets! A generic adult shot will not allow you to ID many odonates, even if you're and expert. 2) maybe I am ignorant, but I can't figure out how to submit sightings through the app. either this feature is hard to find (should not be) or does not exist, which would be silly. What better medium to collect sightings than through a cell phone app, that knows GPS and time automatically?

Great app. Great app however when I go to use the map function for local species the app crashes (reported but still no fix)

What a great resource!. This app (and its more mature sister app Birds Eye) are wonderful examples of a new style of electronic field guide harnessing the full power of the online resources available. Using this Dragonfly app, I can find what dragonflies have been reported near my present location. I can see excellent photos and learn details about each species. I can also submit my findings, contributing as a ‘citizen scientist’ to desperately-needed deeper knowledge. I’m already loving the app, and look forward as it matures!

Meh. First time I tried it and I couldn’t find anything that matched. I have lots of experience using keys so I think the dragonfly wasn’t in the database.

Love the app. Sign in Problem resolved. I wish we could see Range Maps w/o being online. I have Bird apps that have offline Range Maps.

Okay but. This app is okay but only one photo per species. Not all species are listed. For example, the Chalk-fronted Corporal dragonfly found in Southern Ontario is absent.
