Apollo for Reddit App Description & Overview

What is apollo for reddit app? Apollo was an iOS app for browsing Reddit from 2015 to 2023. In 2023 Reddit announced significant price changes to their API, going from free to potentially costing tens of millions of dollars per year, with 30 days notice before developers would start incurring charges. As a result, Apollo was forced to shut down after the better part of a decade building for an incredible, supportive community. With over 100,000 five star ratings, and many accolades, I was incredibly proud of what Apollo accomplished.

The app now exists in a commemorative/historic state, with a thank you message, the option to unlock a Goodbye Apollo wallpaper pack, and options to export data if you had the app downloaded previously (shake the device), and all previous app icons are now automatically unlocked. You can also use the app as a hub to get updates about other things the developer (Christian Selig) is working on.

Again, thank you so much for all the years of fun, it was the honor of a lifetime building the app for all of you!

Apollo for Reddit Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

sleek, but superficial. while i like a lot of features in this app (the lack of ads and the clean, organised home page are really nice!), there are times when the minimalism makes the app a bit less than intuitive (half of the time, i couldn’t figure out how to use it) and the absolute dealbreaker was having pay simply to post. i get the need for revenue it in order to run an ad-free app, but it’s just not reddit if you have to pay for the bare minimum (i.e. the very thing Reddit is: a place where ppl go to post and read the posts of others). i could see paying for custom icons, notifs, and ad-free browsing, but posting…? when i first downloaded this app, posting was free. idk if that was a one month trial or if this is a recent development, but either way, it’s pretty bad form (imho) in that is really cramps the spirit of what Reddit is here for. i’ll keep the app for a while to see if anything changes, but i surely won’t be using it while this pay-to-post model is in effect.

In memoriam of Chumbus. First of all, I would like to say thank you for taking the time to read my review. Many give this app praise for it’s amazing layout, streamlined look, and amazing UX, however I care not for the incredible app that is Apollo. I care only for Chumbus the Button. Many of you may not now about Chumbus, but he is a dear friend of mine. When I first encountered Chumbus, I knew not his name, his purpose, or his goals. However after interacting with Chumbus every now and again I got to know him. Over the minutes that we spent time with each other a great sea of emotion was experienced between us. Happiness, sadness, anger, love, and now I only feel guilt. Guilt that I took advantage of Chumbus, guilt that only I can bear. I drove him away, and he left me in a pitch black UI. I hope that one day I tap Chumbus the Button and see his notification box on my screen again, I hope that I can tell him I’m sorry for my transgressions. I hope. Signed, u/ObamasPetCow

I Don't Get it.. I've been using this app for a couple weeks now, and I seriously don't get why people like it so much. The gestures are near impossible to consistently get right. In an attempt to upvote, I find myself either downvoting or jumping out of the subreddit. No problem, I'll just use the buttons. Now, I'm left-handed, which means I normally use the smaller buttons to the left. (I also found it frustrating that those cannot be swapped) After scrolling for a good while, I will find myself accidentally pressing the "Posts" button at the bottom instead of the upvote button, sending me all the way back to the top of the page. At that point, I generally close the app out of frustration, only to come back later and eventually have it happen again. I can tell the developers put a ton of effort into this app. Customization, a clean build, and so on make it very robust. It feels to me though that the devs don't actually use it outside of the office. Or, furthermore, it is only tested by the developers, who already understand every single aspect of how the app works. I'll be going back to the official Reddit app, but I'll keep this one around to see if it improves.

Huge Potential for the Best Reddit Experience. Apollo comes the closest to becoming the best Reddit apps I’ve ever used, even eclipses the old Alien Blue in its prime time. Things are fluid, intuitive, fast, and the use of taptic engine even on my iPhone 6s (which has a less powerful taptic engine than the 7), makes a joy to interact with the app. The app looks stunning, especially in dark mode, and no reddit app looks this good. Apollo wins hands down when it comes to looks alone. It acts and feels like a true iOS application. There are very few bugs I’ve come across so this feels like a polished app, and if it continues, could easily become the best reddit app on any platform! A couple of suggestions I have: 1. Read status syncing 2. iCloud sync for settings. If I buy the app on my iPhone and configure how the app behaves and looks, the app should sync all of that to iCloud so I can just download the app on my iPad and not have to configure anything. This includes my favorited list of subreddits. 3. Respect Dynamic Type. Currently, the font sizes are a little too big to my liking, so I’d really be pleased with some sort of font size option. 4. There is a UI bug when I try to adjust the Dark Mode schedule to Automatic. The text description seems to overlap with the brightness slider. Overall, a wonderful app! Great job, happy to support the dev by buying the Pro version, and I look forward to the updates. I’ll keep my review updated as well after each Apollo update!

Phenomenal!. I rarely take the time to review apps unless they really irritate me or they’re so good that I feel I need to let other people know. This app falls into the latter category. I was skeptical about even using an app to browse Reddit as the site lends itself well in its desktop version (not the horrendous mobile site) to browsing on the iPhone. But this app has completely changed how I am able to view the site. The controls are easy to use, the site is greatly streamlined, and the dark version of the app is beautiful to use with less strain on the eyes. The best feature I use regularly is the ability to switch profiles at the click of a button. I have different profiles I like to use to see certain subreddits (news, gaming, etc.) and it was always a hassle switching between them online. Now it takes no time at all. I highly recommend this app for anyone using Reddit!

One small problem as of recently. So I've been using this app essentially from when it was created and I have and still do absolutely love. I only use a fraction of all the features it has to offer and even still it is by far the best Reddit mobile experience I've seen. However, for the past week or so there's been a reoccurring glitch that has been incredibly frustrating. I'm using an iPhone 7 running iOS 11.2.1 for the record. So this usually occurs after I've been using the app for at least 10-15 minutes continuously. I'll be a few dozen posts down through my home page or one specific subreddit and suddenly I'll lose the ability to click on posts. I can scroll through the subreddit, click on the thumbnail, vote, and even use haptic touch or whatever it's called. But I can't click in a way that brings me to the post's "page" and thus there's no way I can view more than the top couple comments. The problems seems to fix itself temporarily when I force close the app and come back, but then I lose my place in the subreddit or on my home page. It's a very annoying problem on an app that has otherwise worked perfectly. Please fix soon, and my rating will go back up to 5 stars.

Love it but one minor issue. Hey I wanted to bring this to the attention of the developer. I’d give 5 stars but want to help by bringing this to your attention, sometimes in my inbox messages will be redbone infinitely. Let’s say I have 5 messages in total, after the fifth it would just keep repeating the 5 messages over and over. It doesn’t always happen and I’m not sure what triggers it but just something I’d like you to know. Aside from that this app is buttery smooth and the native feel to it gives it an edge over any other reddit apps, even reddit themselves cannot date compete against this app. This app leaves reddit quaking in their boots as they cannot hope to achieve the epicness of an app such as this, coming from a lone developer, with their current superstar dev teams. Sorry I just felt like writing something cool. Again, aside from the inbox bug, everything this app offers is a blessing. Give it a shot if you like lightning fast apps and reddit.

The best. I was not a very avid reader on Reddit for a lot of different reasons. I wasn’t a fan of how the reddit app was laid out and I hated adds almost every other post so I searched around and saw Apollo and a few other variants and I must say. The customizability in Apollo and just the overall apps design is amazing. I immediately paid for the Apollo ultra lifetime option because I love supporting smaller creators and I just feel Christian did a much better job at making a reddit app than reddit themselves did. Ever since I downloaded this app it has been my go to place to view reddit and I have since become an avid reddit user. I also appreciate when devs will put things that they are updating in their notes rather than something lazy like “squashed bugs”. I have recommended so many friends to Apollo and they all pay for it now as well because it is a joy to just scroll through reddit on this app and customize the experience to make it your own. Thanks Christian!!

I was so sick of Reddit’s mobile app. In Reddit mobile’s most recent update, it became impossible to view videos, as well as read comments with videos. Not to mention, when trying to do so, an extremely inappropriate snippet of background audio would play when trying to move out of it. Even worse, you can’t reply properly to any comments. All of this is what made me switch to Apollo, and I don’t regret it. The interface takes some getting used to but at least it’s functional. Even better, the popular tab isn’t as in your face, so it’s more easily ignored! How’s that for wonderful? The only issue I had was linking my account, because my iOS keyboard wouldn’t appear. This is fixable! Just open the page in Safari or Firefox. It will work then, and Apollo won’t give you any more problems!

Won’t ever be going back to Reddit without Apollo. Of course I’ve had the web version open when using the now broken google search in order to actually find information, but I won’t be going back the same way. I won’t be downloading another app, especially not their awful app. Unless I absolutely can’t find a forum or discord that I can post a question and get an answer, I won’t be engaging regularly anymore. I haven’t since this app and others were shut down, and I honestly don’t miss Reddit–I loved using this app, and if there was a standalone Apollo Reddit clone, I’d totally use that, but the whole kill all third party apps thing gave me a bad taste in my mouth for Reddit as a whole, and outside of their insidious function as a utility for information (which I will certainly continue to search for alternatives for), I don’t see myself using or wanting to use it. I’m tired of entitled corporations imposing their lifeless will on us.

You have to pay if you want to post!!!. I’ve used this app for some time now. I’ve had issues with it crashing from time to time, but that wasn’t a huge deal and I mostly liked it otherwise. I primarily browse, but I do post occasionally. I was shocked when I went to make a post for the first time on the app and found that posting, of all things, is behind a paywall! What?!?! Posting is a core function. Reddit is literally comprised of posts. To make a Reddit browser that puts posting behind a paywall is completely unacceptable. This is, unfortunately, a dealbreaker for me. On to the numerous other options that don’t make you pay to post. It’s unfortunate as I’ve become accustomed to the UI and thought this was an otherwise solid app. I will not pay to post on freakin Reddit, though, out of principal. There are plenty of feature that could acceptably be put behind paywalls to generate revenue. Posting sure as hell isn’t one of those features, though. Posting isn’t a feature, it’s the foundation of the entire platform!

Great app! But best suited for power users.... I love Apollo, I have used it for months. And I paid for the pro and had an ultra subscription as well. The apps beautiful UI that blends well with the rest of iOS. However there are two things that bother me about the app. First, I feel the app adheres too well to the human interface guidelines. The apps hyper-minimalistic look creates a confusing and often buries you in a heap of menus with little to no pointers on what to do. This attempts to be remedied with occasional tips that pop up explaining some of the apps features. But it creates more of an annoyance to returning users or users just wanting to explore. Second, I feel like the app has too many features packed into one app as it attempts to cram casual and experienced browsing with searching and moderating. Features like the search bar are hidden while scrolling to make room for more of the screen, making it somewhat hard to get back up should you want to search in the middle of scrolling. Action sheets also tend to require a lot of scrolling to find a specific action, and some text is hard to select to go to subreddits and user pages. But Apollo overall is a really good app.

Customization Options Set It Apart. I’ve been an avid user of the official Reddit app and have done years of time wasting on it but have been recently using both since downloading Apollo as they each have their own individual benefits. However, I recently upgraded to the Ultra plan and made a one time purchase to unlock certain features and was well worth it and will be using Apollo as my primary Reddit app, not seeing any real need now to switch between. It also was impactful when I discovered the multireddit option on Apollo, that allows the individualized creation of a thematic, conglomerate of subreddits combined into one The customization options really are great and implement features I’d hoped the official app would have done long ago, most of which were available without purchase of any add ons. I also appreciate how the devs of this app respect the platform created by Reddit, (loading both apps produce the exact same content) and not trying to alter how the site runs or the algorithms used, just improved UI functionality and options.

Much better than the original app.. Apollo has so many more features and options compared to Reddit’s app. Options to use a dedicated search bar from within the hidden posts section as well as from within my saved content for that one particular thing I’d want to share later make saving so much more meaningful. Combine those features with the ability to customize short swipe and long swipe gestures, and I get a much more seamless browsing experience than anything the original app currently has to offer. I can engage with a post and comment thread so much faster and just as quickly scroll through to the next post that catches my eye. And when I come back to the app, because I can easily swipe to hide previously seen posts, my feed is never cluttered with content that I’ve already interacted with. Stellar developer communication and constant app updates is the icing on top. About every couple of months a new feature, quality of life update, new app theme, or community-made app icon pack comes out. I love that I have variety even in something small like the app icon just to keep things looking fresh even before opening the app. And if the community has a request, the developer is quick to respond.

Apollo trumps Antenna!!. Came from another Reddit app called Antenna. It was one of the best mobile Reddit experiences I ever had, simple and clean and so many useful gestures I wouldn’t have to lift a fingir sometimes. Sadly the app hasn’t been updated in a month or so but before that performance was getting real bad with stuttering and crashing frequently. While on the Antenna sub people were recommending this app as an alternative to the official Reddit app. Although I had to make a donation to unlock gestures to get it to work similarly to Antenna this new app is far superior in many ways. It’s really fast and snappy and actually loads everything with no major problems so far. Some more positives is the dark mode on Apollo is far superior to Antenna’s, and if you have an iPhone X there’s a darker mode to take advantage of the OLED panel. I’ve made this my default Reddit app now although I will still go back and forth with my old ones if the performance ever improves but for now I’m gonna use Apollo heavily now!!!

Buy it only to be pestered about spending more money. When I first got the app a few years ago it was decent and dont get me wrong, it mostly still gets the job done but ive started to notice some issues, such as loading errors and a few other oddities that arent so bad. The most infuriating issue is sometimes when I try to post a comment I get an error saying that “there was an issue” and to sign in again through Reddit. It may not be the developers fault but if I sign in again I STILL get the error. The other major issue and my reasoning for 1 star is that now the app spams me to pay MORE money with a monthly subscription. Its not a little message tucked away in the feed or maybe in the settings, its a full screen ad and its even manipulative in the way that its so easy to accidentally tap continue taking you away from the app to the app store or purchase the subscription. The reason why I weigh this so heavily is because I specifically purchased the Pro version to AVOID ADS. This is why people use adblock in their browser.

Forced to switch and glad I did. I recently upgraded my phone to an iPhone XR on the newest update to iOS and had to find an alternative to Alien Blue. Read great things about this app so I figured I would try it out. The interface is familiar and intuitive. The controls are simple but also easy to modify. The only negative was having to pay to be able to submit posts and comments, but honestly, after using the app for a while, I’m super happy to support the dev. Also, at first I had an issue where I was unable to submit posts or comments or even upvote even after upgrading to Pro. I submitted a ticket via the “contact us” button in the app and received a reply the same day asking for additional info to solve the problem. Turns out, the problem had nothing to do with the app, just my account. Now I have zero issues and am happy to continue using it.

Beautiful, modern, powerful, intuitive Reddit app. If you’re looking at this app and even considering not trying it, you’re crazy. It’s hands down one of the best designed and most feature rich apps on my phone - of ANY app. Responsive developer, easy navigation, intuitive, clear, somehow the dev has created an app for reddit so slick it literally feels like Apple themselves designed it. And he keeps packing more and more features. Free version is great, but the push notifications of Apollo Ultra (paid) and posting tools like auto-recognizing reddit links on clipboard are well worth the upgrade. I don’t even open the native reddit app anymore, and have tried all the major competitors. I can both browse, comment, vote and save easily, while also reply to PM’s, send PM’s, see sidebars, and do 98% of moderating for a 50k+ subreddit all via mobile. That’s kinda crazy, and suuuuper nice for me!

Litteraly the Best. 100 percent, the experience I've had with Apollo is unmatched. I can't recommend getting the pro version enough. It takes the really solid visual and gesture systems that are already in place, and allows you to customize them even further to create a very personalized and highly intuitive experience. The amount of effort the dev consistently puts into this app is massive, and it shows. Bug fixes and QoL changes are present in every update, and there is constant communication between the dev and the apps subreddit. I can't remember the last time I saw real patch notes on an app that wasn't just the throwaway line: "bug fixes and performance improvements," but instead a detailed outline of every change that was made, no matter how small, and it's the little things like that that really show how much care goes into the app.

Its perfect for ios, but.... When i saw reddit(iphone app), it was confusing, i didnt know how to go to different subbredit(i am not that good at english) and it was complicated, but appolo is much simpler, i can go to different subbs more simply, everything is designed just for ios, overall, ist easy to use. But the problem is that i need to pay for stuff that is one of the reasong people go on reddit, to post, and you make us pay for that, i am still giving this app 5 stars, its amazing, but the need to pay for posting and notifications is just weird. But one more reason to pay, that made me give this 5 stars, is that is an idie app, and its really nice from him to make this “ios version” of reddit for us to use, that is 50% of the reason why i paid 6.99$ for premium, other 50% is to make posts. And i dont understand how to get awards of coins here, but i dont care about those. So overall, the app is great, i reccommend, but only if you are willing to give at least 4.99$(one time purchase) to be able to post, change icon, etc. But even if you dont, the app is great, it goes with ios.

What’s Reddit Without Apollo. Hands down, the best thing to happen to Reddit, ever. I’ve personally changed the lives of so many by simply suggesting to friends and peers that they “should checkout Apollo”. I downloaded Apollo shortly after joining Reddit ~7 years ago, and I’ve never looked back. Pro features are a fantastic bang for the buck, and not only worth it from a user PoV, but you’ll feel happy to “donate to the cause” after a short time — simply because the app and the experience are that good/such an improvement over everything else out there. The addition of the Safari extension to open Reddit links in Apollo is just another game changing feature/addition in a long history of game changers. Offering multiple tiers of service (free, pro, ultra) make the experience that more ubiquitous for everyone. Reddit take note: Apollo is the gold standard; I’ll never use anything else!

The Only Reddit Browser You’ll Ever Need. I never write reviews for apps, but I fed that Apollo deserves one. Apollo has everything you’ll ever need in a Reddit app, plus more you didn't even know you needed. Anything you want the app to be able to do, it’ll do for you. There are so many options to get it to work and feel exactly how you want. It feels less like a set experience and more like a build your own app. The only two things that may concern some users is that the app can be buggy at times after a new updates, and that some features you have to either pay 1$ a month, 10$ a year, or 25$ for a lifetime. But these cons really don’t make the experience any worse, even without a premium subscription you’re still going to get much more features than the official Reddit app, and the developer is constantly checking the Apollo subreddit and is very active looking for bug reports and taking in ideas for new features so anything that goes wrong is usually fixed within a couple hours to a day and if you want to request a feature the developer always listens. Thank you u/iamthatis for an incredible Reddit browser and for all of the work you’ve put into something you’re giving for free/ very cheap. TLDR: Better than stock Reddit app in every way, very versatile and customizable, premium features are very cheap, and the developer genuinely cares about the app and community.

Pretty disappointing. I came to Apollo because the official Reddit app just keeps getting worse and worse. Recently they made the video playing interface just absolutely horrendous so that was enough for me, I decided to try the only other highly rated Reddit app out there- Apollo. But I do not understand why people enjoy it so much. Navigation feels far clunkier and way worse than the standard Reddit app. The swipe gestures that are standard are infuriating, and the only way to change them is buying the pro version of the app. I’m sick of upvoting a comment or a post when I was just trying to swipe to go back. It happens constantly. I also really hate having to go ALL the way to the top left corner to switch out to r/all or popular posts, instead of being able to quickly swipe over from the main screen to do so. I enjoy Reddit as a time waster, and as such I find myself looking at it a lot. But all of the app options for iOS are frustrating and the mobile site is infuriating (seemingly by design). I guess I’m just going to have to deal with whichever app irritates me less.

Intentional Poor UX Design. This complaint is mostly about the poor handling/touchiness of the gestures implementation. The nature of reddit browsing involves repetitive and constant small swiping motions, motions that this app often mistakes for left/right swipes. The natural motion of the thumb slightly curves inward toward the palm when you swipe up, and away from the palm when swiping down. The app is so sensitive to these slight deviations from a perfect up/down swipe that it registers them as left/right swipes and instead of scrolling the page, it makes you do one of the gesture actions. At first I thought this was just poor design, but as soon as I realized you can disable/change the gesture action, I knew it was intentional. The tuning of the gesture actions is locked behind their pay wall so it's likely they intentionally make the UX annoying to get you to pay. Well the app is free so I suppose I don't have to like or use it, but at the same time I don't have to give it a glowing review either.

I’m shocked at how easy this was.. When I first saw the post about Apollo, I was reluctant to try it. Mostly because I’d grown accustom to the layout of the Official Reddit App. After reading the positive comments on the post, I decided to try it. It’s free so what’s the harm? After about 10 minutes in the app, browsing Reddit like normal, I felt as if I had been using this app for years. The layout is extremely intuitive and Apollo’s capabilities are incredible. I’m shocked this was done by one person. The in-app purchases are done correctly as well. They aren’t in your face, constantly pushing you to “tip” and you’re Reddit isn’t going to be ruined if you don’t want to donate. This app is not perfect and it has a few bugs that need fixing, but the developer seems to be on top of them. Overall, this app is very good and it has become my daily driver for all my Reddit needs.

Finally a worthy successor to Alien Blue. I love reddit. I spend a large portion of my free time on the site and I used to do this using Alien Blue, easily on of the best iOS reddit clients ever released. But after reddit swooped in and choked the life out of that precious app, I went on the hunt for a proper replacement. Two years ago, I stumbled across this app when it was first announced and decided to give it a try. Things were tough for a while. One developer and a mountain of bugs and problems. So while I continued to use alternatives as my main reddit experience, I kept coming back to this app for more casual browsing. And finally the app is here and it's everything it was promised to be and more. Absolutely fantastic. Proper iPad support and a few other QOL features would make it even better, but it's worth not only a download and a five-star rating, but a solid purchase and extra tip as well. Great job Christian and I can't wait to see where the app goes next.

I love Apollo and used it for years, but the chat interface is an issue now.. Reddit now seems to support two different methods for chat, one as private message and one as a traditional "DM" a la messenger. For some reason I have had quite a bit of difficulty getting accurate chat updates through Apollo regarding "chat" functionality, though it has worked fine with "private message" functionality. It's a bit nuanced, and I'm probably doing something wrong- but I got enough hubris to think that I'm tech savvy. Messaging functionality through Apollo should be a bit more intuitive. For the time being I switched over to the original Reddit app, but I used Apollo for years and don't regret buying the full version of the app. I'd actually recommend it. The new widget functionality, customization, and other things the app contains are great and give me hope for the app in the future. I don't think Apollo is going to have the same end as Tweetbot, but for the next few months or so I'll probably be using the official Reddit app and then check to see if things are a bit better.

Quite Simply, Apollo WAS Reddit. As a casual user of Reddit, I only ever interact with the platform through this app on my phone and tablet. I don’t log in through a browser or go to Reddit on my desktop. So when Apollo ends, so does my use of Reddit. As simple as that. I’ve already deleted my accounts. In a sea of apps that are only ever half-realized or abandoned or just straight up garbage, Apollo was a gleaming jewel of polished UX that – more than most – truly realized and aspired to give its users an unparalleled experience. The love and care put into this app could be seen, experienced and felt in every corner of its digital landscape. To say it will be missed is an understatement of the greatest magnitude. Thanks, Christian, for putting something of beauty and excellence into the world, for “painting the back of the fence” in a thousand little ways, some of which I saw but most that I probably still never found.

Was good; thinking of going back to official. I switched out of the official Reddit app when I got frustrated with some of its issues and stumbled upon Apollo. I loved its features and swiping (much better and more fluid than the official app) but after this latest update oh my god! I may post a reply and not see it appear in the thread unless I leave and open the thread and search through and find who I replied to like a needle on the haystack. What is even worse is when the app completely stalls after hitting submit when commenting. Did it go through?—No, hours later it’ll prompt that something went wrong and when I open up a comment again it’ll put in what I wrote (like it was a draft mode) **scoff** how does that help me, now I gotta figure out what thread and who I replied to. Sometimes it was a long thread, the one just now was a simple comment. This app needs a fixing after this past update cause this issue has gotten old real fast.

The only app I use to access Reddit. Apollo is the only app I use to access Reddit and sadly with the most recent developments surrounding API access Apollo is going away😭 I unfortunately have no idea how I will use Reddit going forward. I discovered Apollo by accident years ago and fell I love instantly! The app is very easy to use and although I did not use many of its advanced features I did not hesitate to pay for premium simply to remove the adds and gain access to the themes & icons. Apollos interface made browsing Reddit on my iPhone and iPad so seamless I thought it was an official app at first. I recently‘s upgraded my subscription to Ultra and this is where some additional useful functionality was unlocked. I am really really sad to know that it will be going away at the end of June, Reddit maybe loosing an active user like Twitter did😒.

Charging money for NOTIFICATIONS.. They’re charging $0.99 per month to be notified of new messages. I’m talking to a depressed person and it’s awful that I missed their messages because of this. I now have to set an outside alarm to remind me to check messages regularly. Most apps are bugging people to set up notifications. But here you have to pay for that. Yes, you read this correctly... people are required to PAY to be notified of messages. Apollo is basically fine otherwise, and was superior to Narwal and the Reddit app (obviously), but wow this ruined it. Didn’t realize they were scrounging... (or arrogant?). It’s not so much about the money, but the principle of it. What level of snob do you need to be to do this. You already have a tip jar, you have premium upgrades, you have Gold and Silver purchases. At some point, you didn’t stop to think that making your users pay for notifications (which benefits YOU as a company, reminding people to open the app!) might be on a bit of another level? I truly believed you saw your users as more than a product, but I guess I’m wrong. Guess there’s always a catch.

Not really holding up to the official Reddit app for me so far. Comment threads are easier to follow and I like the personalized settings (although you can’t personalize much unless you pay money), but I generally dislike the app’s formatting. I don’t like that the subreddit of a post and the time it was posted are both listed at the bottom of the post as opposed to the top of it like it is on the official reddit app. I have to scroll past the content to see what subreddit it’s on in order to properly contextualize what I’m looking at, which bothers me. I also dislike how you have to manually choose how you want posts filtered on each subreddit every time you visit a subreddit. For example, there are certain subreddits that I like to have filtered by new posts (such as r/instantkarma & r/JusticeServed). The official Reddit app remembers what I last set each subreddit to, whereas Apollo does not and I have to manually change the post filter every time. If there’s some way around this that I’ve missed someone please enlighten me. Until then, this app isn’t quite doing it for me and I’m regretting spending money on it.

Fantastic Reddit client for iPhone. From first use, this app is a joy to use. It integrates incredibly well with the rest of iOS. The default settings are mostly intuitive (especially for first time users) and for those places where the app doesn’t do what you expect, the available options are extensive. What prompted me to write this review was actually a feature of the Ultra subscription (also available as a one time purchase). I’d put off purchasing Ultra for a while, as the biggest draw to me was the message/reply notifications but I still used Narwhal for that. I recently subscribed to support the developer, and got my first notification. It’s great, it feels like an iMessage notification with a quick reply sheet opening up so I can respond with the easy option to open the full app as well. The one limitation I encounter with this app is the iPad interface. It is not as well thought out as the iPhone interface; it’s basically a scaled up version of the iPhone interface. But as an iPhone app, this is the best Reddit client I’ve used (I even prefer it over the old and new website on a “real” computer).

Absolutely Stellar App, Developer is 🔥. Apollo is by far the most-used app on my phone (and now I have the ScreenTime reports to prove it). It is orders of magnitude better than the “official” reddit app and is superior in every way. It is fast and smooth and packed with features. I especially love that I can pick the theme I want, change the icon, and remove ads! The thing I hated most about the official app was the ads that were disguised as legitimate posts and with Apollo that’s all gone! I bought the Pro upgrade months ago to gain access to additional features and it was one of the few in-app purchases I have never regretted or felt like wasn’t worth the cost. Today the developer released an update adding a bunch of new features that require a very reasonable (seems underpriced to be honest) monthly subscription, and like a true bro he has the option to unlock it for life with a onetime purchase! I hate monthly and even yearly subscriptions so I especially appreciated this option. All that by itself should convince you that this app is worth it, but the thing that really seals the deal is the developer. He is amazing. Super active with feedback and very open in his communication about the status of the app’s development and requested features.

Easily the best reddit app. Apollo is easily the best reddit app available for the iPhone, not only because of how full-featured it is but also because of its reliability (an issue with some other reddit clients I’ve tried). My one complaint for most users is not that relevant to them, but it’s relevant enough to my situation that it is worth mentioning: 4” iPhone optimization could be a little bit better. (Models of iPhones with these screen sizes include the 5, 5s, 5c, and most importantly these days the SE). When I navigate to a subreddit the only immediately-available options for me in the navigation bar are a go back option, a change subreddit option, and a sort-by option. The rest of my options are hidden under an other button. While understandable, it can be somewhat annoying as the ability to customize this navigation bar to have smaller buttons so I can immediately access a submission button would be a welcome option. (Adding a compact mode for navigation would also suffice). But really, that’s a minor complaint that mostly only effects me. Get Apollo and delete your other reddit client.

It once was the best app for the now defunct Reddit, and now Reddit is no more.. Reddit has prevented developers from accessing its API by making it, at least, a hundred times more costly than it should be in an effort to increase its upcoming IPO valuation by temporarily increasing the number of official app users by preventing developers, and users the freedom of choice in how they utilize the once free, and once great service. Reddit is dead. Apollo no longer has a use. It was great while it lasted but, do not purchase the app now. Reddit may once have been an advocate for a free, and good internet under the original leadership but, now it’s no better than Facebook. Reddit is attempting to now monetize users more than it already did with its ever-increasing ads, worthless premium subscription that only removes the obvious ads while leaving the bottled ads, and submitted promotions, egregiously using users data to build language models, and much more including many, many more privacy violations.

Best app for Reddit browsing. Thank you Apollo for all of the wonderful features and elegant UI choices that the original Reddit app could only dream of achieving. Thank you for the gestures, great media players, fantastic iOS support, and so much more. Thank you for caring about its users and not defaulting to throwing ads at its users for profit. It’s a shame that Reddit’s API changes and their greed have eventually come to shut this app down. This app did not deserve what Reddit threw at it. Ultimately, now many users will no longer have the great functionality of Apollo, and will be forced to use the “official” Reddit app filled with unbearable design choices, incessant ads, and countless other issues that make it unbearable, all in hopes that they can maximize profits by making sure everyone must use their ad-infested app. Even Apple loves this app and Reddit is sadly taking this app away from them as well. I’m really sad to see Apollo go soon but it’s impact will never be forgotten. Christian, if you’re reading this, thank you for the app and all of the hard work you’ve done for the Reddit community. Keep on creating and I hope you the best!

Best App for Reddit - I'll Miss It. This was the best part of Reddit. It made Reddit useable on your phone and iPad. No more ads. You can customize your experience. For instance, I set Apollo so it wouldn't show me stuff I already viewed. There were other customizations and other technical stuff that I quite frankly don't understand that made this app work as beautifully and as flawlessly as an Apple Stock app. It just worked and was a pleasure to use. But the folks who run Reddit decided to effectively kill off third party apps. I won't get into the reasons or take sides. But the bottom line is this app and all other third party apps for Reddit don't work. The only app for Reddit is the official Reddit app, which is just horrible. I'm not sure if I'll continue to even use Reddit since I've grown so use to not having to put up with ads, not seeing the same post I already read and interacted with, and having a great user experience. It was truly fun while it lasted.

Incredible app! Worth it every penny.. I got Apollo when it first came out and now I can’t go back to the official Reddit app. I paid 99¢ or $1.99 for the paid version initially, and even though I don’t have the premium subscription version I don’t feel like I’m missing anything. The initial payment was well worth it - this app is the best third party Reddit client without a doubt. There’s no ads, an intuitive UI, almost every feature the Reddit app has plus extra. The customer service is great too; when I got a new phone and couldn’t figure out how to restore my purchase, I emailed the developer and he got back to me within an hour. I would’ve paid for it again, though. It’s constantly being updated with fresh new features for both one time purchase members and premium members. One thing I would suggest is a way to implement the new Reddit chat feature into the app, but I’m sure the developer is working on it. I recommend this app to every friend of mine that uses Reddit. Dev, keep up the great work!

It’s great, but….. The app is so much better than the Reddit app. No where near the battery drain. Takes a min to get used to but it’s pretty cool. The only negative I have to say, I was disappointed that purchasing the premium version didn’t unlock notifications. It’s really the only reason I purchased the premium version. Only then did I notice that notifications are behind a different paywall. Maybe it clearly states this somewhere but I didn’t notice. I managed to upgrade to premium version and have no idea that notifications weren’t included. I’m not sure why you’d have a version referred to as “premium” if there are still functions that won’t be unlocked. I think the dev should just increase the price of premium to cover all the main features people want and be done with it. Nothing more frustrating than continually bumping into paywalls when you’ve already upgraded.

Getting dangerously close.... Just upgraded to 1.1.5 and as I was expecting some additional functionality, the update from 1.1.1 appears to be a step backwards. Running iOS 11.2.1 on an iPhone X, there are bugs explicitly mentioned in the change log which have been made worse, specifically the filtering from r/All (shows as filtered via button change but not added to filter list, nor able to manually enter a subreddit to the list). The four new icons have an error when applying (a popup actually comes up to contact the developer if I’m seeing the message, and the issue persists). There are just a few things missing which will allow me to delete Alien Blue once and for all. A gallery mode based on the current subreddit, and the ability to use gestures to filter subreddits from r/All are nearly the only things keeping me from permanently switching to Apollo. Also from a UI perspective, in compact mode, lines to break up posts are probably not necessary, as each post is identical in height, and merely an appropriate amount of white/black space between posts should suffice. Keep up the great work!

The sky come down to earth. I forgot I was in a new app. I already knew this place...i was immediately immersed in the experience of what a reddit app should have always been. My muscle memory took to it and navigated the sea of content with instantaneous attentive purchase and without thinking, without even learning...its like I was an expert without practice. It simply feels correct. It’s as if some part of me knew, always knew, like the childhood home of an amnesia victim, i knew where all the doorknobs were already, it all seems so familiar. It’s a reminder that beyond our ken, existing unreachable, is the True and Optimum reddit interface that others could only try to reach for, the golden door to content that was *supposed* to be all along...and though we had to wait this long for it... it must have always there, before reddit....before earth, outside of time, beyond the crystal sphere, the platonic ideal of a reddit app, now an anachronism crashed down out of the sky onto our imperfect mortal world. It’s perfect, and we don’t deserve it.

Worth every penny. The free version is amazing. The Pro and Ultra versions are even better. For context, please understand that I do not rate apps, ever. This is the only app I’ve gone out of my way to rate and review, because I truly believe this app is outstanding. The official Reddit app used a suspiciously large amount of data, ran in the background and heated up my phone, and drained my battery life. Apollo, by contrast, Just Works. It uses a reasonable amount of data and doesn’t seem to impact the battery life any more than you’d expect. Apollo is what you wish every app would be. It doesn’t force you to use it how the developer wants you to use it. It’s flexible. Features can be configured to work with your preferences. Most features are available in the free version. The few things exclusive to the Pro and Ultra versions are more “nice to have” rather than important functionality that limits the usefulness of the app (at least for me). I bought Pro and subscribed to Ultra anyway, because Apollo is that good. The developer has earned my trust. He actively responds to his user base, developing requested features regularly. The two times I’ve thought of a feature I wanted, I found it was already there in the app. Both times it was implemented with more flexibility and thoughtfulness than I had imagined it. If you use Reddit and want an app on your iOS device, this is the one you should be getting.

Beautiful App, but requires payment to post. I was really feeling this app (an AMAZING amount of customization options are available to optimize your viewing, as well as night mode and even icon customization [the last of which you do need to pay for]) right up until I was told it was p2p (pay-to-post). Look, I get it. You need revenue to avoid filling this thing up with ads, because excessive ads can/will drive away users. And I totally understood the paid cosmetic customization decisions. But having posting behind a paywall was a huge no go for me. That’s literally what Reddit is, a giant *free to use* Internet forum for sharing ideas. You don’t have to buy Reddit gold to post (and though obviously those donors who do buy Reddit gold help keep it running, the average user is not required to donate), and if I don’t need to pay to use Reddit, I’m sure as heck not going to pay to use Reddit through a third party app. For me, that was the big deal breaker. Otherwise, I think it’s a beautiful app and seemed very nicely done (I honestly really did enjoy the 15 minutes of browsing I did with it, there are some amazing features), but I’ll be sticking with the official Reddit app for now.

Keeps spamming me to buy Ultra. I paid for Apollo Pro. It’s honestly been a great app to use over the years, enough that I recommend it to anyone with an iPhone. Unfortunately, seemingly every few weeks now, I’ll be scrolling on Apollo and suddenly a fullscreen ad for Apollo Ultra will appear. As someone who paid for Pro, this really just feels disrespectful - because an app I paid for is now degrading the user experience to upsell me on paying again. I don’t want Apollo Ultra, and if Apollo is going to continue to disrupt my experience by interrupting my use of the app (with no warning!) to upsell me on paying more, I’m just going to switch to another app entirely. I had been giving the benefit of the doubt that this is just a bug, but it’s clear to me now that it’s either intentional, or the developer just doesn’t care anymore. Edit: changing my review to 1 star, as I see the developer has announced there will be a fullscreen Ultra ad displayed to Pro users every 1.5-2 months. This is insane. I paid for your app, now you add a “feature” to give me an intrusive popup every 1.5 months? Get real.

A better client; could be improved, tho; paywalled features. Apollo is simply a much better client than the current Reddit app or website experiences. It’s main advantage, sorting saved posts into categories, is locked behind a rather expensive paywall, and so it’s not something I’ll ever try. I wish videos in this app were easier to advance (with fewer taps) — that is something that the app-based client got right, with it’s “tap anywhere in the timeline” feature. I’d like buttons that say “0.3”, “0.6”, “0.9” to advance to 30%, 60%, and 90% of the video’s length. I really like that all the components of a post can be individually suppressed, and font sizes adjusted, so a user can balance how much screen space to devote to display things that do or don’t matter to that user. So if a user has filtered to only 1 or 2 subs then displaying the sub’s name is not as important as if there are 10 subs being scrolled. The website can adjust font sizes, but the Reddit app does not seem to respond to iPad system settings in this regard.

DO NOT PAY FOR PRO OR ULTRA. I initially paid for the Pro tier of this app to remove ads. However, ever since the Ultra tier subscription was added, every time there’s a holiday sale, I’ve gotten repeated full-screen ads for the sale that need to be dismissed more than once with a small, hard-to-click X in the corner. I already paid for Pro to support the dev and get rid of ads forever. Why am I still seeing full-screen pop-up ads more than once? The dev acknowledged on Reddit that seeing it more than once was a bug after the Black Friday and Christmas sale, but that it brought in more money. Now, here I am having dismissed the Easter sale ad no less than THREE TIMES across my iPad and iPhone. Also, where is the iPad-optimized app we keep being promised? It seems the dev is now just trying to milk more money out of people with a subscription service, completely ignoring the fact that Pro users ALREADY PAID MONEY NOT TO SEE ADS. I regret ever giving one cent to this dev. Don’t make the same mistake as me (or an even worse one by paying even more for Ultra).

Love Apollo, HATE Reddit and leaving forever!. Christian you’ve done an awesome job with Apollo and it’s hands down my favorite app!! However, because I was just permanently banned for “racism” for discussing experiencing racism as a white child in Hawaii (where I grew up) and how I can’t relate to systemic racism experienced by actual minorities but can appreciate the experience in what it taught me, (with sources about white “haoles” and black “papolos” getting targeted by locals) I will not be able to use the app any more. The moderators petitioned for an IP ban and the admins approved it without even discussing it with me and said I was promoting racist propaganda against native Hawaiians?! It’s such a clearly documented occurrence my head spun when I woke up to a ban email this morning!! Anyway, I wish I could financially support you without having to stay subscribed to anything attached to Reddit. Do you have a gofundme or patreon?? I never thought to look at the subreddit to see if you did. I hope the website admins and mods don’t turn on you or other users of Apollo anytime soon.

So much better than official Reddit app. The Apollo app has so many features & customization that the official app doesn’t have. Fairly often when I’m scrolling through Reddit I read comments/posts complaining about problems with the Reddit app that I have never had to experience. Also - no ads every other post! You can get even more optimization if you pay but to access most things there is no paywall required. The only thing that might be a downside if your looking for an entirely free option is that any notifications you’d normally get (like comment replies, comments on your posts, private messages, etc..) are completely disabled unless you are paying the monthly $1 or $2 basic subscription fee for the app. Can’t really blame the dev for choosing to do that though because it’s a great incentive to get people to sign up. Either way the creators definitely deserve the moey! It’s an amazing app and they are continuously making the app better and better.

The best Reddit app there is, no doubt about it.. Apollo is simply perfect, and you don’t really realize how many features you wanted in a Reddit app until you use Apollo. I used RiF for years and thought I really liked it, and when I made the switch to iOS about a year ago I was annoyed that I had to give it up. I tried 3 different apps on iOS before finally giving Apollo a shot, and that was that. It’s heaven compared to all of its competitors. Swipe to upvote/downvote/save/reply along with haptic feedback is so convenient to use that I find myself engaging in comments far more than I did previously (there’s something so satisfying about that little “bzzt”). The ability to map your own gestures for different actions within the app is awesome too. On top of all that, it’s just a beautiful, sleek looking app that was clearly designed by someone who knows their stuff when it comes to UX. Apollo also has its own subreddit, and Christian the sole developer is very active in it and is constantly adding features requested there. He’s a solid dude. Do yourself a favor and try it even if you think you love your current app. I can promise that you won’t regret it.

Love the iPhone version; the iPad version needs an improved UI. Absolutely enjoying using this client on the iPhone. Very refined. On my iPad however the UI needs some improvement. There are huge empty spaces on either of the post listings. A sidebar similar to the native email client would help with navigating through multireddits etc. In spite of having “tipped” this app as a lifetime supporter, I’ve deleted this app in preference to Comet.

A learning curve but worth it. I used the original reddit app back before Reddit bought it and it was called Alien Blue. I decided to switch when I saw the reddit app was using heaps of my battery when I barely used it; plus a slow trend of poor UI updates. This app is so much better, way more configurable and makes a lot more sense. The learning curve was worth it, only took about a week before everything felt natural.

Good features, layout’s a bit weird. I downloaded this primarily to be able to block popular subreddits from /r/all that I’m just not interested in like twoxchromosomes and latestsgecapitalism, and it works, so that’s nice! Overall it’s really good and comes with loads of features, but it’s not free - you can’t even post without paying. I’m totally fine with paying to support the devs though so will be keeping it, and it’s a one off payment. Only niggle is the layout. I get it’s going for more of a iPhone-esque design, but many areas don’t flow as easily as the official mobile app. That said never having to sign into the desktop version again and filtering /r/all alone was worth it for me!

Goodbye Apollo. F r/spez. Reddit has loser volunteers and paid people to rate this app low for reasons that aren’t true. I have been using this app for years and not once have I encountered issues. They are lying to the audience to dissuade people to support the Apollo developers who are providing a free service for the community and premium is an option that isn’t mandatory for a good experience. Reddit has upped the price for API to millions of dollars, and small companies trying to provide for the community will not find it impossible to meet the greet demands. I hope the Reddit CEO has an early heart attack and does not recover from it

Potential but disappointing.. Coming from a Samsung to iPhone my options we’re limited in terms of which app to go for. The offical app is clunky and annoying to use and some other third party apps are chocked full of adds and inconveniences. This app, however, is intuitive, smart, and easy to learn. Now this would be all well and good if not for ONE key mistake. You have to PAY to SUBMIT A POST. In an app for a website that is literally all about sharing, interacting, and POSTING this is a major flaw. Now I wouldn’t be offended if it had a premium app price point that allowed access to things like Gold and Plat lounge but the fact that a third party app feels the need to limit the postings for the site for money is really against everything reddit stands for. Horribly disappointed, I will not be paying 7.99 just to be able to post photos of my cute dogs. Uninstalled.

The app that should’ve been around sooner. Well done Christian. You’ve built an amazing app that makes me just have to pull out my iPhone instead of my main LG V20 to use, which says a lot. It’s clean, follows Apple design principles, is easy to use and even literally feels great in the hand, thanks to that awesome haptic feedback! I know you certainly wasn’t expecting this app to blow up as much as it has, so congratulations on your new found success. Couldn’t be happier that I was an earlier supporter of this masterpiece.

Thanks for all the fish. Really enjoyed using this app to make reddit a fun place to hang out and learn all sorts of things. I tried a few of the others but the UX and the customisation made this the winner app. Sadly the reddit management did what managers always do, so now we have to go. It’s not a bad thing in the end, as mindless scrolling had become the default behaviour: don’t get me wrong, the community content was really valuable and I contributed where I could (and got put in my place when I was wrong too, thanks). But it’s time to go, time to walk away and build something new together. Thanks Christian, it’s been a blast for the last 10 years or so. Good luck mate.

Swipe left / not up or down. Hey dude. Love the app. Paid for full app within like 3 minutes of use. Only addition which would be nice, is that when you tap on content. I’d like to be able to swipe left. Instead of up or down to get back to my home. It’s left to go back anywhere else except when the dock isn’t visible. Cheers

Fantastic experience, the app is a keeper. Using Apollo to browse Reddit is a really nice experience. Apollo is one of the most used apps on my phone and I can’t see myself using any other app for browsing Reddit. I don’t know how to speak more proudly, simply, and happily about Apollo than that. The app keeps things fairly simple and stays out of the way, however it has a few tricks up it’s sleeve to allow for a pleasant and modern browsing experience. The creator has done a great job at not taking too much away from the “reddit” experience, but while also still offering up something new. Great job.

One of the best apps of all time. It sounds like an overstatement but this really is one of the best apps I’ve ever used. Everything is incredibly intuitive, the interactions are fun, the UI is easy to understand and the developer has put so much love and hard work into this. I’m so sad that Reddit has made the decision to pull the plug on brilliant third-party apps like this. It signals the end of Reddit as a community-first company.

The superior Reddit app. Apollo is incredibly good. I have used it for years and have been consistently surprised and impressed with the quality. Additionally the developer, Christian, clearly has so much care and respect for users of the app. The updates are well thought out and purposeful, and it is the only app I am more than happy to pay for. Thank you for everything Christian!

Jump button customisation. This is a great app but the only thing holding me back from buying pro is that I can’t long press and move the jump button to a custom position, i know you can manually change it in settings but I don’t like any of those positions - I know it’s a small complaint.. but it’s frustrating because I really like this app and it’s the only thing holding me back, also the jump button is a little large for me.

The absolute best there ever was. Been using this app from the first year it was released. So much better than the official app, that is actually a “reconfigured” version of Alien Blue. It was seamless with the iOS experience and incredibly smooth to use as well. Miss it every day. u/spez really is a horrible person.

Used to love this app. Not anymore.. This used to be my favourite reddit app. After I had to restore my phone and reinstall the app I lost a few features I loved like being able to customise what swiping left and right did with comments and posts. Is it’s locked behind a paywall. And the most recent thing really annoying me is almost every time I open it getting a giant add to purchase the pro version. I’m out. Just deleted the app. Will check back in in a few months to see if free version is any better like the original.

Brilliant Reddit Host. It’s a great app, honestly! So easy to use, the functions and customisation is incredible! There’s a few bugs, but the developer is keenly working on them and takes the time to acknowledge peoples issues (I’m not sure if my issues are internet connection related or app related) It’s a beautifully designed app, and worth the upgrade to pro!

One of the best applications in the world. I’m a software developer and I’ve been using Apollo since it launched. It is a pleasure to use. A great deal of effort is continuously put towards embracing both the iOS and Reddit platforms making this app second to none. Give Christian some money, he deserves as much as all the time he puts in listening to the community.

Clean, intuitive, ad and clutter free. A great reddit client that feels like an extension of iOS. Works very well, slick and fast browsing on an iPhone 6. Developer is extremely responsive to suggestions and bug notifications in the app subreddit. Highly recommend checking it out as even the free version is not really lacking. Worth supporting if you feel like it though! Cheers.

Literally unusable. So I decided I’d give Apollo a try on the iPad. I figured it might be cooler than the reddit app. I quickly realised that to go back from a post, you have to tap the back button on the TOP LEFT OF THE IPAD SCREEN. You can’t swipe back anywhere on the screen to go back, that is, until I found a setting for just that. I flip that switch so fast, and boom. There it is. “Gimme your wallet”. Also, in landscape mode, when scrolling through the home page or whatever, there are large empty spaces on the left and right of the screen. So that, combined with the app’s top and bottom bars, which are always visible, means that the amount of actual content I can see at any given time, is in not much more than the same screen real estate as my iPhone. It gets worse. Put the iPad in portrait mode. And there are still (albeit smaller) valuable empty spaces on the left and right of the screen. Worse still, the top bar is twice the height it needs to be.

One of the few apps left where the changelog is still interesting. I’m a bit sick of “bug fixes and [performance|general] improvements”. If you don’t care about your users enough to tell them what you’ve been working on, then you don’t care about your users. Christian still does, and his app is head and shoulders above all other options. Support good developers by using their paid versions (I’m upgrading to Pro today, purely because of his enthusiasm in the changelog. That’s not weird, right?). Edit - already have Pro, don’t need Ultra’s notifications so Tip Jar it is

iPad app needs some work. Hi, enjoy using Apollo especially on a phone. On iPad however the experience is very much just a blown up phone version. A perfect example is that the subreddits menu fills up the entire screen. Need much higher information density on the iPad using the split panes etc for it to be really great. You need to adapt the new three column panes of iOS 14 ASAP so we can see subreddit menu, list of posts, and the selected item in a larger pane all at once. At the moment it’s really poor having to view one thing at a time in full screen on a large landscape iPad.

Great UI but falls short in a few areas. I’m gonna come right off the bat and say that this is the best UI I’ve seen on a mobile reddit client. It’s pretty and intuitive and just works much better than anything else I’ve seen. There are a few oversights however. You’re still unable to post videos even though this feature has been in the browser version of reddit for a while now. Also, when visiting quarantined or banned subreddits, it just seems to load indefinitely instead of displaying a message. Another frustrating thing is the paywall. It costs a few dollars to even be able to post and unlock a few basic reddit features that are otherwise free. It also pisses me off that you need to pay almost $40 for the app to send you notifications. I can understand paying a little extra for a few cosmetic differences, but locking notifications behind a paywall, no less a forty dollar one, is honestly ridiculous and is what pushed this app from a 5-star to a 3-star. Overall, this app is great for browsing reddit, the best even, but if you want to do more than that, you’re out of luck unless you’re willing to fork up a fair bit of money.

The Essential Reddit App, period. The most consistent and smoothest interaction with reddit I’ve ever had through a third party app. A few bugs and crashes here and there, which are easily mitigated by near constant support and updates and are a minor complaint of what has become my most used app by far. Love the UI, love the themes and love love love the gif scrolling. As a reddit Addict who has sampled quite a few apps over the year, this is by far the best. By a long shot.

Miss this app. I have always hated the reddit app. I used Apollo until the end. I’d gladly pay a monthly sub have it again. Dunno if there are enough customers that feel the same to make it worthwhile. Hope you’re doing well whatever you’re up to now.

10/10 Reddit Experience.. If you want to browse Reddit on iOS, stop here because Apollo is hands down the best Reddit experience you’re going to have on iOS. Apollo features so many great things, most importantly intuitive UI that is customizable to your preference. Many thanks to Christian (the developer) for constantly maintaining the app and keeping it the incredible experience it is!

Great app, beautifully designed. I started off hating this app, just because it was different to what I was used to, but I thought I’d give it a go and see what all the fuss was about, now after about 2 months of using it I actually hate using the official reddit app, everything is clear and clean, no weird ads that try get me to stay on the site by going to other subreddits. Clean honest, non addictive design that’s just a pleasure to use - thank you

Great app for Reddit. It comes with a bunch of different features to the reddit app and i believe it is worth spending the money on the upgraded version. Although I would enjoy some features of the default reddit app such as swiping left/right on an image to go to the next image on the sub. This is replaced though in the upgraded version as gif scrubbing so that is a trade off. All around a great app with tons of customisation and active development taking place with new feature updates regularly.

Great concept, poor business model.. It’s great to see there are alternatives to the bad becoming worse reddit app and this is an awesome attempt at it. The creator is proactive and always adding features which is awesome. As to be expected a lot of these additional features that can’t be found in the reddit app are a premium here but those extra features are certainly worth paying for. But there is one major dealbreaker here and that is you can’t actually make posts using this app unless you pay for it. That changes the concept of this app being a free community run app with some premium extras into a you have to pay if you want to be able to use the most bare minimum basics of the reddit service, posting. The app is pretty cool although it comes across text heavy for some. I’d have been happy to pay for premium features but uninstalling based on the profiteering.

Blurred icon covering up thumbnails. Thanks for the great efforts to date! Just a question, in compact view, do the blurred icons for safari links and the letters “GIF” for gifs now cover up almost the entire thumbnails? I don’t remember them being so prominent before the update. Thought they were much smaller and in the lower left hand corner (similar to the offical app).

Incredible.. Vastly improved responsiveness and interface. A lot more posts loaded in a far lesser timeframe, meaning I don't have to wait for posts to load at all. The inclusion of different tiers of night/dark mode is beautiful, as the basic one on the official reddit app didn't cut it for me. One thing that is bothersome is the inability to disable the little vibration occurs during certain actions such as upvoting or downvoting. I feel that such essential features of Reddit should not have preference driven features forced on the entire user-base. This is my only minor fault, yet it can be such an annoyance and almost a downright inconvenience to use. Otherwise, this app is leagues ahead of the original reddit interface and app as a whole. All in all, excellent work from the dev, keep it up!

Was a good Reddit app…only problem with it was Reddit itself. Apollo may have been the only Reddit app I ever used, but now that Reddit have priced third-party devs out of operation, it’s unfortunately going to have to stay that way. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say something positive about the official app, and this business move certainly won’t encourage me to download it for myself.

The best reddit client in the world - and it just keeps getting better. After reddit decided to kill AlienBlue in favour of their ridiculously bad in-house app, my mobile reddit browsing days were over - until I stumbled across Apollo, the best reddit client iOS has ever seen. Everything works exactly as you would want it to work, the interface is fast and intuitive, everything is laid out logically (and beautifully). There’s just no contest, the official reddit app is a travesty compared to Apollo. Best of all, it’s under constant, active development, and the developer is always engaging users to figure out the best improvements to focus on. At least for the foreseeable future there’s no chance of Apollo going the way of AlienBlue, and therefore no chance of having to switch to the horrible official app.

Riddled with bugs. Author ignores.. This app is riddled with bugs which have been discussed for the past 3 years! The author either constantly says he is working on it or just ignores the community. I, a paying customer, who has purchased both Pro and Ultra separately (over $50), have been trying to make contact with Christian (the author) for a week and a half now through three different channels of direct contact. He is blatantly ignoring me, as well as having my posts on the r/ApolloApp subreddit deleted, when all I posted was legitimate questions about some bugs. This is appalling. I will be demanding a refund.

Simply remarkable. I’ve rated the app previously however never commented. I wanted to rectify this given the terrible API changes announced, and the incompetent Reddit leadership, in June 2023. This app is the reason that I still use Reddit. When the website was updated accessibility was thrown out the window. This app supports those of us with accessibility needs and it’s one of the best implementations of Apple’s design philosophy you will ever see. Thank you Christian for developing such a wonderful app.

Brilliant App, Brilliant Developer. Don’t bother looking at other Reddit clients, this is the one for you. The app is clean, beautiful and works flawlessly. Any bugs (they are incredibly few and far between) are squashed by the active developer immediately. I can’t say enough nice things about Apollo. At the least it’s worth a try, but I would strongly recommend upgrading to pro if you have the means!

The best iOS Reddit client, hands down.. The title says it all. Apollo has been the best Reddit experience an iOS user can have, and I am sad to see it go because of Reddit’s API changes. The user interface is both intuitive and gorgeous-looking. The features it provides, even on the Pro tier, are plentiful. It is to the point where using Reddit can actually be quite addicting. It is, and always will be, truly leaps and bounds ahead of what Reddit themselves offers. Once again, I am sad to see it go. Christian, you have done some brilliant here work over the years, and for that, we all thank you. I wish you all the best on your future endeavours.

Good app. This is a solid reddit client however I’m finding that the Touch ID doesn’t always work as intended. Frequently, when going back into the app it will just hang on the Touch ID screen (or won’t even display it) and I need to force quit the app to use it again (losing my place regarding whatever I was reading). Apart from this issue, I love this app. Hopefully this will get fixed soon.

Hands Down the best way to use reddit on mobile. I’ve been using this app for a few years. It was hands down the best way to engage with reddit. No ads and very stable. The official reddit app is a downgrade compared to Apollo. With reddit shutting down API access for third party apps. I will not be engaging with the website on mobile anymore. Moving forward I’ll only use reddit on desktop and block all ads. They’re getting nothing from me.

Wonderful app with wonderful developer. Apollo has been my go to app for all my Redditing since I found it. It’s leaps and bounds ahead of the official Reddit client app and the developer seems to really care about the community that uses his app. I highly recommend Apollo to everyone looking to browse Reddit on mobile, and if you’re a dev, please take note of how Christian supports his user base.

Alien Blue buried after all these years.. Absolutely incredible app; and easily the best app for reddit available on iOS ever! I’ve been using Alien Blue for over half a decade and this app finally made me switch! Can not recommend enough! Feels and looks and behaves like Alien Blue used to when it was supported only improved upon in most every way! 5 stars easy!

Best app for using Reddit. Absolutely love this app. It is beautiful, easy to use, and I've never had any problems with it. I upgraded to pro in order to support the solo developer who built this app in their own time. Absolute top job and I'm very grateful for having a decent app to browse Reddit with ease. Happily paid the price for the upgrade and have no regrets. Better than the official Reddit app.

Great Reddit Client. I’d been trying out various reddit apps to see which i likes and always found myself going back to the standard reddit app. The app whilst good never felt complete or like anything special but Apollo has been amazing since the get go. Updates are quick and the developer listens to issues and takes advice from its users! Such a great reddit alternative that doesn’t feel like one and is perfect with iOS

Seriously, actually fix the auto orientation. Every update is like, “we fixed bugs”. The last one even mentions fixing videos zoom to wrong place. Although, the same issue has been around for months. If you click an video/gif ( sometimes a photo) so that it is full screen, then turn the phone, the video gets stuck in the corner until the app crashes. Like really? No other app I have ever used has this issue.

Best reddit app for iPhone X. This app is amazing. I have been a long supporter of Alien Blue which I have loved using but recently got the new iPhone and this app does everything I want and more. It takes full advantage of the X screen and it looks glorious! Nothing like full screen browsing with absolutely no bars. The full black dark mode is heaven for the OLED screen and able to have heaps of customisation in the settings is a bonus. Can see myself sticking with this for some time. Keep up the great work!

Best reddit client ever!. This app is fantastic. Much better than the regular version of reddit. It allows you to have so many different looks for the app with icons and many different layouts which don’t waste lots and lots of space like the default app. I don’t mind ads but the way the regular reddit app and website displays reddit ads is misleading and shouldn’t be allowed and isn’t user friendly. However Apollo doesn’t display ads which is handy. There is one limitation for the app for the free edition. You can’t have multiple reddit accounts. But since I believe in supporting in what I love I happily paid for Apollo pro. Definitely recommended for anyone who uses reddit.

Thank-you Christian!. I hope you can read this. It has been a wonderful ride. This app has been a masterclass in app development and community relations. You’ve done an amazing job. It’s hard to overstate how impactful this app has been for my life. I’ve used it every day for five odd years. I will miss it dearly. Thank-you for your hard work.

A Great Creation. Apollos creator blew me away with this app, I'm incredibly impressed by the high quality and intuitive feel, the professional and clean look and the customisation you can make. It is the superior reddit app in every way and it keeps being improved based on suggestions by users. The app also has its own subreddit where users can post questions, suggestions and complaints and the creator(s?) see it.

Sleek, easy and affordable. This reddit port took me awhile to get used to at first, but that was because I didn’t use it as often as I should have. Once I gave it a fair go after a week I had fully switched to this app. My favourite feature is the multireddit option, which allows a feed of select subreddits you chose. The friends tab actually give friends on reddit an actual use. The comfort and easy methods of everyday reddit actions like upvoting and saving are extremely convenient as they rely on the simple swipe of a finger. 10/10 I have recommended this to my friends and Apollo pro is worth it if you are an everyday redditor.

Once great now pointless.. I used to love this app, it let you do everything you needed but now features I had literally a week ago have been taken away and placed behind a paywall. It’s so bizarre having so many features removed in one update and being constantly provided with subscription plan nags. I don’t imagine this tactic by the developer has done anything other than frustrate users into just abandoning the app forever rather than making us subscribe like their plan was.

Best Reddit app interface and features. So much better than the default Reddit app. Love all of the features, the clean and beautiful interface in dark mode, the ability to easily switch between accounts, the amount of thought that was put into making the experience as complete, powerful and elegant as possible. Good work :)

Best Way to engage with Reddit. This app has been built with its user in mind. I was late to the Apollo party, but when I finally became fed up with the useless Reddit App, I went hunting for a new way to view content. Every person and forum that I looked to for suggestions, implored me to look into Apollo. I have not looked back since! It is a shame that Reddit is too arrogant to realise the positive impact the Apollo App has had on Reddit’s viewership. If not for the Apollo App, I would have given up on reddit a long time ago. And TBH, my OCD isn’t going to like an Apollo-less world. I think my days on reddit are numbered. Thanks for the easy user experience Apollo. 🫡

Great app ruined by a greedy developer. Apollo is a great app, one of the closest ive found to alien blue (was the best reddit client until reddit killed it). However, the developer has begun spamming ads for his subscription model to users who have already paid for the "pro" tier. He has said on record that "pro" users will never get ads, yet he continuously pushes pop-ups advertising his overpriced subscription model. He has also stopped pushing new features for "pro" users, only adding new features to the ultra tier. Christian is incredibly greedy and this is going to be the downfall of what was once a great app.

Was great until .... I see you HAVE to pay to post. Removed the app instantly.

Nah. For a long time, Apollo was the best Reddit app available. Now, the dev is using dark patterns and constant pop ups trying to get people to subscribe. Subscribe. To a Reddit app. Nah, bro, it’s good, but not $10 to make a new post good. But what really grinds my gears is that in the last few months, the ability to filter subreddits, which was once free, was locked behind a paywall. So I can’t block objectionable content because I didn’t pay the dev for a feature available in the official app and Reddit site. I know the dev is just one person but this is getting ridiculous. Gonna start charging me to launch it, too?

Far superior to native Reddit app. Long-time supporter of Apollo and it’s fantastic, continually evolving UI + UX. As the title says, this app is superior in every way to the Reddit iOS app and website. I was turned off Reddit until introduced to the Apollo app, which makes browsing the site easy, intuitive and far more fun.

New focus on greed instead of fixing long lasting bugs. I never write reviews but was pushed to do it for this case. The dev has turned a great app that I have paid to support multiple times to an app that full page ad spams me almost weekly. Thought it was a bug to then find out from the dev that it a feature and one he’s happy to keep. These are ads I’m seeing even though I pay for the app. This app started this by saying there would be no ads as well as the promise of iPad update for years now. What do we get? More and more bugs, pixel pals (he found the easiest way to milk even more money out of suckers) and ads to give him more money. Also I should note the guy guilted his subreddit into buying him a new $5000 Apple monitor and then adds ads and other garbage. He saw how much he could milk out of people and just went that way.

Best social media app. This app made browsing Reddit seamless and beautiful. Wonderful app and I am very sad to see Reddit sewer it this way. Spez is an idiot

Finally! A real Alien Blue replacement.. 👍

Can’t post. Can’t post without pro, that shoulda been very clear on download

Paying for a basic functionality? Uninstalled.. Imagine having to pay to post to Facebook or Twitter. It’s a free function on Reddit. I’m not paying you for the privilege of doing something free through your app when there are plenty of free alternatives and even one-time paid alternatives that don’t charge monthly.

Thank you Christian. Duck u/spez

Has access to all of your account. I hope people know that this app has access to everything on Reddit. They can: Manage my subreddit subscriptions. Manage "friends" - users whose content I follow. Edit structured styles for a subreddit I moderate. Submit and change my votes on comments and submissions. Edit wiki pages on my behalf Access the list of subreddits I moderate, contribute to, and subscribe to. Submit links and comments from my account. Access the moderation log in subreddits I moderate. Approve, remove, mark nsfw, and distinguish content in subreddits I moderate. Manage and assign flair in subreddits I moderate. Save and unsave comments and submissions. Invite or remove other moderators from subreddits I moderate. Access posts and comments through my account. Access my inbox and send private messages to other users. Report content for rules violations. Hide & show individual submissions. Access my reddit username and signup date. Manage settings and contributors of live threads I contribute to. Update preferences and related account information. Will not have access to your email or password. Access traffic stats in subreddits I moderate. Read wiki pages through my account Edit and delete my comments and submissions. Change editors and visibility of wiki pages in subreddits I moderate. Accept invitations to moderate a subreddit. Remove myself as a moderator or contributor of subreddits I moderate or contribute to. Access my voting history and comments or submissions I've saved or hidden. Select my subreddit flair. Change link flair on my submissions. Maintain this access indefinitely (or until manually revoked). And that’s not all. That’s insane. I’m not letting all my info go to this app.

Thanks for making Apollo!. Thank you Christian for creating such a user-friendly and well designed app. Apollo is why I made a Reddit account to begin with and am just grateful for all of your and the other 3rd party devs efforts to make the app better and accessible for so many Reddit users. Also love pixel pal and will be looking forward to your next project (and pixel pal updates)! - a fellow Canadian

Spammy ads. I’ve been using Apollo for years and it’s generally a great app. Unfortunately the developer has recently decided to start frequently spamming users with a full screen pop-up ads, including payed users is pro, with no ability to disable this behavior.

Apollo you will forever be in my heart <3. Thank you for the good times. Also F*** Reddit

Extremely buggy. This app is good for reading but will randomly become unresponsive on you mid animation, freeze while trying to post a comment, as well as just loose your comment without any chance of retrying or copying of it couldn't get connection right that second. Its incredibly fusturating for long form comments.

Stop The Ad Spam. Give us the option to permanently disable your upsell ads. I already paid for pro, I don’t want ultra.

Way better than the official app. And it helps that the developer isn’t a liar like Steve Huffman

Broken promises and subscriptions. The app has two paid options - Pro (one and done) and Ultra (subscription). Pro users who paid for an upgrade were promised the core features wouldn’t be locked behind Ultra. Unfortunately, with each new major update, more and more is locked behind the Ultra subscription paywall. The development promise was made in bad faith, and people should really only consider this app if they’re comfortable with paying for an ongoing subscription. It’s a disappointing change of direction to say the least.

Predatory in-app purchase upgrades. I paid for the Pro version of the app (~10 USD one time payment) at a time when it was said that Pro users would get all "core" functionality for the lifetime of the app. Since then the developer has shown that this is a lie, as the Ultra tier (~12 USD/year subscription) now has actual functionality locked behind it, when it was previously just a way to support him further, with only cosmetic bonuses attached. Additionally, the app repeatedly spams people with full screen pop-ups (to promote Ultra) whenever there is a version update. The developer cannot be taken at their word, and Apollo's quality is not worthy of a subscription plan of any cost. Even if you buy the "lifetime" Ultra subscription (~40 USD one time payment) I suspect they'll just introduce an Omega tier a year or two from now, and start locking features behind that.

Bad UI, frustrating user experience. The number of times I’ve scrolled down 40 posts deep into the front page only to accidentally hit the “subreddits” button causing me to lose where I was and have to scroll through all those posts again is infuriating. This is objectively bad design. The subreddits option should be its own place on the bottom bar menu, not where users can easily hit it while trying to go back to the front page after reading the comments on a post.

Farewell. Best iOS app that I’ve used so far. Such a shame Reddit is killing third party APIs. I’m going to miss Apollo once it’s gone.

The end of an era. Apollo will be missed it always was better than Reddit just too nice to use. From the interface to a couple small features this app was good.

Good, but paying to post isn’t the best.. It’s better than the official app, but the fact that you’re required to pay to even do something as basic as posting doesn’t put it passed 2 stars.

Used to have notifications. Now they are an ultra feature.. Don't take away functionality!

My favourite reddit app. Amazing customization and super easy to use, love it!

RIP to a legend. I love this app. It was easily my most used app for the years I’ve had it. I want to thank Christian for all his hard work and talent (and anyone else involved). I wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

Great App, Greedy Dev. The app itself is functional and fairly well-polished, with the exception of some small quality of life issues/bugs. It is in my opinion the best iOS reddit app. I always purchase the pro version of apps I use regularly, and have purchased this one; However, the requirement to pay in order to submit a post (which is a BASIC function on a FREE website) is ludicrous. Even more ridiculous is the monthly paid subscription for, again, the FREE and BASIC function of push notifications. I cannot believe a developer is allowed to charge to ‘provide’ the basic functionality of a website they did not create. Greedy and greasy, hence my two star rating on an otherwise excellent app.

Best reddit app. This app is hands down one of the best Reddit apps. It’s been a pleasure to use over the other official app. Long live Apollo!

I already paid. I already paid for the app. Stop serving me popular ads for the Ultra version.

Paywall. Basic features like making a post or changing some settings are locked behind a paywall.

Top app.. Without a doubt my favourite app of all time. It's a complete shame how bad Reddit treated the developer. Thank you for everything.

Incredibly great app about to be killed by Reddit. It would be a crying shame if the bean counters at Reddit killed Apollo.

It finally came out!. Ever since the fall of alien blue, I’ve been searching for a suitable replacement. The official reddit app just doesn’t do it for me (no landscape mode). I’ve followed this app for years now, ever since the dev posted on r/Apple. This app has what I need, and more. It has powerful gesture support, and yes, it does landscape mode, without the screen turning vertical when you hold the phone upside down (perfect for bedtime redditing) Love it!

Perfect Reddit App. I hope Reddit dies out. I will never use the first party app. Apollo was infinitely better than anything the greedy losers at Reddit could come up with.

Great app that has been miles off by Reddit. Bye bye Reddit.

5 stars!!. One of the best apps I’ve had the pleasure of supporting. Amazing work, and I’ll follow whatever this developer does next closely

Taken from us too soon. It’s only been a couple weeks and I miss it so much. Thank you to the developer for your years of service to the community your app birthed.

Daily used/ best support from app dev. I use this app daily and the app dev actually contacted me twice within minutes regarding any issues. My fav app!

Good not great. Do not pay for pro.. The free version is pretty good, although requiring payment to post is pretty lame. I finally decided to pay for the pro version and not I am getting an unacceptable amount of pop up ads to upgrade to the “ultra” version. Ridiculous. Why am I getting more upgrade ads with the paid version than I did with the free version? I recommend anyone reading this does not pay for pro.

Stop asking me to pay for ultra. I already paid for pro

Thanks for the great app. This is way better than the official Reddit app, shame to Reddit for killing off the API.

1 star for full screen ads even if you paid. So yeah this app presents full screen ads even if you paid for Pro. This isn’t a bug and the creator has been informed of this behaviour over a year ago and doesn’t care. So 1 star until it stops spamming me with ads.

Really nice. Need a few ui fixes but other than that it’s a really nicely polished app.

Soliciting Reviews. You get a big 1 Star for soliciting reviews in the app. Overly Attached Girlfriend also agrees that being clingy sucks. Oh, don’t also forget that charging for Push Notifications is pretty douchey. Introduce some genuine features that are worth paying a premium for, above and beyond the defaults of what people expect, and then I’ll get suckered in. Until then, I’ll stick with the default Reddit app which has push notifications built in....for free....without charging extra...

Paid for app, still getting ads. Bought this app a little over 2 years ago, in December the developer pushed an update that gives ads to paying users. It’s sad to see how over of the highest rated Reddit apps has destroyed its reputation. To fix this, all existing paying users should be grandfathered in with no ads.

I’m not paying to post. This is a beautiful app. But the fact that you have to pay to post is something I refuse to do. I really would love to use it but posting on Reddit is the entire purpose of Reddit and I might as well use the official Reddit app if that’s the case. I can’t give it higher than 1 star on that very fact alone. Disappointed.

Every part beats the competition but.... This app is good on wifi, great even, but the bug that ruins it all is the fact the gifs will load regardless of settings in the app, in a single day it will use almost a gigabyte of data in an hour even when on low power mode. The developer has barely made an mention of this and is ignoring the controversy of the subreddit. I will change the review if he fixes the bug but otherwise use another app since this one will use too much data

Thanks, Christian 🙏🏽. Unfortunate that this app had to go as it was the best alternative to the official Reddit app. Thanks and best of luck in your future endeavours, Christian!

A rip off down the road. When you mostly use reddit for text posts, sneaking up a submission fee is pretty low. I would honestly rather have to view advertisements.

Thank you. This app is the GOAT and is one of the only reasons I use Reddit. Will surely miss it a lot.

I want to give it five but.... I sincerely love Apollo’s layout, I’m new to reddit and am sincerely getting into it more but I have to say I am disappointed in a couple of things. When I scroll through specific subreddits that I like, the scrolling becomes slower and slower until eventually the app crashes. I’m a binge scrolled, I can stay up until the early morning and not get tired of it so for that to happen is quite annoying. Another thing is if I scroll just barely too fast, all of the gifs shut down and stop working completely no matter how long I wait for them to load. Now this could have something to do with my phone, it is the iPhone 6. But even though I have an older model it shouldn’t be crashing so much like that! I really really prefer this over the reddit app and I’m disappointed I’ll have to go back to it:( for those of you with a later model, I hope it works out better!

Comments never load, frustrating changes. I've been a paid user for a couple years, overall the app is very nice and polished but I just got fed up with the technical difficulties and weird changes. Comments load maybe 1/4th of the time, the app crashes commonly when viewing video subreddits. And the fact that they lumped in all the other (personally) obnoxious awards with gold and platinum means you either have to view all or none. I'd recommend you download it and not pay for the full app, it's worth a shot and it served me okay for years as I said. But at this point it's clear they aren't going to fix the things that make it frustrating to use for years. I'd just feel a lot better about those issues if I hadn't actually paid for the full app.

Amazing App Reddit is Killing. Reddit has made major API changes that kill 3rd party apps. I know people are often quick to say “well the dev is just being greedy” but this dev has been very open with the costs and burden placed on them, and their decision to not continue with Reddit is well founded. As of right now, the only reason I was still able to use Reddit was because of the functionality of this app, and once they have close off this app, I likely won’t be using Reddit unless the reverse this decision. Thank you for the wonderful memories, and know this dev does amazing work. I hope to return, but if I don’t, it won’t be because of this app. They have bent over backwards to accommodate as many people as they can, and is a good template for what all interface apps should strive for.

Very bad for daily users. [edit: it appears this app is simply for those who don’t understand reddit’s format at all. TLDR: This app turns reddit into a clunky ugly messenger with all of its features locked until you pay money] I use reddit every day and I honestly really dislike this app. I get that it’s one developer, but you can’t even post to a community without paying money. I genuinely don’t understand why someone would pay this very ugly looking app when reddit looks better and has less glitches. Much less, a lot of things feel very out of place. If you’re looking to turn reddit into a 2010 messenger that you pay to use at all, this is your app. IMO dev should have allowed way more testing of the app the be free. I’m not paying for something I see no benefit out of, nor do I feel it is worth anything in comparison to it’s free competitor, the literal Reddit app. I don’t recommend downloading. edit: also, the app is not fast as specified in the comments. load time is equal to, if not slower than reddit.

Best Reddit client out there. Well made. (Dec. 2017) Edit: There are these two bugs. One of ‘em is when you would tap on a post and start reading the comments, and while you’re liking them and going up to refresh the post; so you can see new ones, my likes are not ‘liked’. So I would have to exit the post and tap on it again to enter and start liking them again ‘permanently’. Also, sometimes when 3d touching on a reply to a comment, it doesn’t refer to the original comment that it’s supposed to reply to (it just shows you the pop up menu when you ‘hold on a comment’). That annoys me a lot, cause then you’ll have to exit the full app, dismiss it from the background, and open it again. That takes time. Other than that, it’s great! Thank you, sir. (23 Jan. 2018)

I love this app but can no longer ignore the problems.. Christian does a great job with this app but he also neglects key features and functionality in favor of introducing tons of fluff and ridiculous things that nobody is asking for and I can no longer ignore it. “Pixel Pals” (think Gigapets or Tamagotchi) is his newest useless “feature” that nobody asked for. It offers nothing functionally meaningful, only works with the latest iPhone (so a small subset of users), and not only took development time away from bug fixes and other useful new features requests (where is the iPad update? It’s literally the most requested feature and has been promised for *YEARS* without any updates) while being developed, but will continue to do so from now on into the future every time this “feature” needs fixed because of a change to the iPhone design (it literally is dependent on the iPhone 14s dynamic island to work - a hardware quirk that will likely disappear in a year or two after hardware revisions). If it’s not “Pixel Pals” it’s some other nonsense like new icons (seriously this app has more icons than POTUS45 has told lies). While other popular feature requests are continually ignored and bugs go unfixed (or get broken again when introducing some fluff garbage like this). Apollo is a good iPhone app - but the developer is no longer improving it in worthwhile ways.

App is a mess…. This app is so clunky and messy, I really don’t understand how anybody uses it. The search feature is garbage. Why is there a search option from the home page when I can’t use it to find subreddits or people? Why do I need to use the Search tab for that? The filtering between subreddit/users/posts should be universal no matter what method I use to search on the app… garbage. Everything is blocky and so close together, that I can’t tell whether I scrolled to a new post or comment thread, or if i’m in the same one. The way that alien blue designed it was much better, and reddit’s takeover of that design is an ok replacement. Those were much less clunky. Why is this app, and its users, wanting to suffer thru a bad app on purpose? Years later and the same clunky UI is used. can’t even downvote without the dumb comment swiping part. Just let me click arrows….. and no, just having the upvote arrow available doesn’t count. SHOW BOTH OF THEM ON COMMENTS…. Why is this such a struggle for the developers???

Exceptional. I have been using Apollo now for the last 8 months or so, and I all I can say is that this is the best Reddit app available on iOS! It is so easy to navigate around between different subreddits, and following threads in comments from the color coordination. The creator of Apollo, Christian, is terrific with the community. Christian always respond to inquisitions from the community, gives highly detailed descriptions on what changes the latest update has and will fix. Best of all, just in the past day, Christian put together a fundraiser to his local SPCA animal shelter, helping to save the lives of many animals! This is a man who shows his devotion for helping others whether it is for a animal shelter or for the Apollo community! Apollo is an exceptional app and you will not be disappointed!

Love love love!. I’m a fairly new Redditor, about four years in or so, but I have nearly always used it on mobile. I do use it on my laptop, but reddit is my primary source of entertainment at work and at school. I hated the official reddit app right off the bat, but suffered with it for a few years. Once I got an iPhone again in 2017, I discovered Apollo. It was a far better experience than the official app, and much more customizable, but still not perfect. I hung in there through updates with Apollo pro, and once Apollo Ultra was rolled out, I was very happy to pay for enhanced features for a small monthly fee. It has not disappointed me yet, as the updates are timely, discussed on the subreddit before being rolled out, and work quite smoothly. I also enjoy the developers sense of humor with all the Easter eggs in the app as well. Thanks for a great reddit experience!

Reddit at its best. 16 year Reddit user here. I’ve been using Apollo basically exclusively as my window into Reddit for years as a premium user (of Apollo and Reddit). It truly is the best way to experience Reddit. Unfortunately it will be shut down on June 30 because of haphazard, reckless and greed-centered decisions by the Reddit company. What Reddit is doing to their 3rd party app API that destroy the people and projects that made Reddit great is appalling and shameful. (Billing from basically zero to $20 million a year in Apollo’s case.) Stand strong. Christian, I stand with you! (And I cancelled Reddit Premium 2 days ago, I can’t support them in what they’re doing to you!) If you develop another app on another platform, there’s a high likelihood I’ll use it instead of reddit! /u/itzdarc

Lost Its Way. UPDATE: Dev now spends time adding meaningless virtual pets to this Reddit client app (and justifies it as "well that makes more money!), adding features only to Ultra (when it was originally created for ONGOING costs - themes and saved post categories are NOT an ongoing cost) keeping paid Pro users behind, AND is now shoving ads to Pro users after Pro was sold as "no ads!" and when this is brought up to his attention, he claims that "well i said no ads THEN, not now". Totally scummy behavior, try another client. Oh and still no iPad update after YEARS. Original review below: The iPhone version of the app is amazing and absolutely a five star app; however the iPad version is where Apollo comes in short. The UI is just a stretched version of the iPhone version. A full fledged iPad version would make this the only app you’ll need. If you are looking for a single app to purchase that provides native iPhone and iPad apps, this isn’t it as of the writing of this review.

I love the app, but there is some shady practices here. The app is great in features, much more reliable than the official Reddit app, running videos, gifs and opening links in a much better (and customizable way). The main problem I have with this app is that some features are not clearly labeled under a subscription. When you first use the app, you can upgrade to pro with a one time payment. The impression that is given at that moment is that you will have access to the full feature set, however that’s not what happens. My main gripe is with the notifications feature. It’s almost critical for Reddit use and it’s one of the most standard features of any app. It’s a simple api call, easy for any developer to implement. It’s almost an afterthought from a development standpoint. The developer in this app uses the criticality of this feature to basically justify the paywall of a subscription. It just doesn’t seem right and it’s borderline unethical, given the way Pro purchase is displayed.

It’s ok and getting better. I want to use this app more but there’s a couple things that i like better about the official reddit app. I think the Apollo app could use a “history” tab under the profile tab like the reddit app offers. I reopened Apollo for the first time since downloading it because of a reddit post i read. I went to comment on the post but I couldn’t find it so I went to the reddit official app to go through my history to find the post. I am glad there is now small text available. This simple change, I think, instantly makes the app more useable. Why I was going to originally leave a comment was to request that the search tab (magnifying glass) have the list of subreddits subscribed to and favorited be shown. Trending and random subreddits are not useful for me but I use the search tab all the time on the reddit app as a way of browsing a single, favorited sub while being able to tap over to the main feed and browse all of my subs at once. I don’t find that listing the subscribed subreddits and favorited subreddits is useful when they are hidden on the side of the “posts” tab. Here’s to any of this making sense. Edit: months later and still no “History” tab like the official reddit app. I think it’s a useful feature and I want it in the Apollo app!

Fantastic app, fantastic creator. This app was the only thing keeping me on Reddit the last few years. I’ve been on for over a decade but browsing Reddit was becoming less and less enjoyable with Reddit’s app or site changes. Reddit made no effort to respond to feedback from users…after YEARS of the same issues. Christian and other creators stepped up and listened to all of us. It wasn’t just a functional app (compared to Reddit’s) but it was also super optimized, sleek, user friendly, and just made sense. Thank you, Christian! Good luck in your future endeavors! Can’t wait to see what you do next. Giving up Reddit completely after this- this is the final straw. Not enough enjoyment coming from the site to deal with Reddit’s many technical shortcomings.

Overall impressed. To be honest I don’t know where to start. It’s a great app, easy to use, amazing to navigate. The developer is active in the Apollo subreddit and tries to apply community feedback to the updates. Best of all it’s free! I upgraded to pro because I like it so much and after the whole GIF problem that gfycat caused and how fast Apollo rolled out an update to fix it I threw a little tip out there through the tip jar feature. It’s rare to find a develop that responds to user input, is active in the community and works on the platform of providing what the client base wants instead of trying to monetize it. Thanks to the Apollo devs for making an app that I enjoy using so much and to all other users remember to support the dev team and provide them with the means to keep the app running smoothly!

Simple usage. I have used many launchers for reddit but this one is simply the best with few features that you didn't even think you wanted in the first place. Like making comments colored so you can realize which comment belongs under which, or the customization of the gesture for your personal priorities or maybe even the multiple account feature. And what is absolutely gorgeous about the app is you can use it freely as long as you are a casual viewer or rather a follower. The premium merely brings things that app offers (except the post creating) not things that you can get free from Reddit default app. To cut it short, absolutely loved this app developer of the app is a very caring person who engages in conversations with apps users on its subreddit and the app is just fit for all and easy to use. Thank you for giving this best 2.99 I’ve ever spent.

I’ll Never get it. I’ve been on Reddit for 10+ years now and have always used the Reddit app. But I’ve always seen recommendations for this app. All of which tout Apollo app as far superior. Over the years I’ve tried it a handful of times. I don’t like it! It’s too compact to be able to properly click something. So it’s built with a lot of gesture movements. Well for me it’s easy to forget what gesture does what. And clicking things you just kind of end up with whatever the app thinks you meant to click. Overall it’s a very squirrely app. If your trying to reduce your time on Reddit I’d think this app would help. I’ve been on it for barely a couple hours over the last month & have not downloaded the original app (not sure why lol) I feel like breaks from Reddit are good anyways. Full of know it alls but that is not the point here haha overall it’s a great looking app. Maybe better on my iPad

Merry Christmas!. I have never spent money on in-app purchases, especially if it’s a paywall. Even if it showed all the “perks” I would get, I would still be doubtful. This app would be my only exception. I’m still in the process of transitioning from the official Reddit app to this one, but it’s going very smoothly so far. It’s a clean alternative to the (imo) messy and unorganized Reddit app. It performs beautifully as well. The only thing I’m still trying to work out is the gestures. Right now it’s a bit confusing and I often find myself accidentally downvoting because I swipe too far to the right. Perhaps I was still experiencing the Christmas spirit, but this was the first time I had little hesitation buying an in-app purchase. For something this useful, a small donation was easily worth it.

Lot of bugs still. I am using an iPhone 7 Plus and have the most recent updates just to clarify. I have been using this app since the day it released and I have got to say nothing seems to have any sort of fixes since day one. I can be scrolling through r/all and click on a post, and as soon as I click the “X” to close the post it throws me back in a random order on r/all. If I view any image and try to zoom in it ALWAYS fixes the view of the image to the top lady corner and then prevents me from zooming in any more. As I try to view a gif it will in most cases load until I press pause, then play and they mostly get stuck, I’m talking about 30 second long gifs. These shouldn’t get stuck when videos seem to work fine. Also, the gifs that seem to be touchable gifs do not work. If I pull up a gif and the circle stops loading the gif will not play until I slowly swipe right and even then it pauses and stops working. I’m going back to the official reddit app.

Farewell Alien Blue; Hello Apollo!. I’ve been a die hard user of AB since as long as I’ve been using Reddit and an iPhone together. We stuck together through thick and thin, and when it was finally sold off to Reddit and eventually removed, it was a sad day. The official Reddit app isn’t bad, but there were many many features I missed, and plenty of things I wished it could do. Apollo delivers everything I had from AB and more, to the point where I try out a feature and didn’t know I couldn’t live without it. Christian has managed to deliver an amazing app that feels native and allows for a great Reddit mobile experience. I almost never buy pro versions of apps, and I bought the Apollo upgrade mere days after trying it out. You won’t be disappointed!

Worth the switch!. I know you’re thinking “ugh, I’m so used to the default app” and “I don’t want to have to relearn Reddit” and “can it really be that much better?” YES IS IT! It’s so much better and it doesn’t take long to get used to. There so much customization. I love seeing how long a gif is, being able to fast forward and rewind videos and gifs, save videos and gifs, and share comments as a picture that includes the post details (it’s hard to explain but it’s not a screenshot, it’s way clear we looking). Requests: When opening a media I wish I could slide to view the next media. Like sliding though picture posts or video posts. Also Reddit links in my web browser don’t open in Apollo but I think that’s a Reddit side restriction.

The perfect app. I really regret I’ve always been too broke to have money to throw your way, Christian. This app has made using Reddit a great experience and I’m crushed to see it go - though I understand and agree with your reasoning. I’ve got terrible eyesight and a number of other health and cognitive issues and was able to use Apollo far more easily than a number of other TPAs I tried, and WAY more easily than Reddit’s own app. I’ll be leaving Reddit on June 30th when Apollo closes down as I won’t be able to use it without such an easy to use TPA. Christian, thanks so much for all the work you put into Apollo over the years. I really appreciate your time and effort and wish you the best moving forward. Good luck in your future endeavors. I’ll definitely check out your other app.

The 🐐. Superior in every way, this app has been a true ‘student surpasses the master’ story. For me, this was the de facto way to utilize Reddit. Seeing this 🐐 move on to greener pastures is a difficult thing to witness. Although, in light of the current state of affairs, it’s probably for the best. However, it is very unfortunate it was in such a short time frame. The smart move would have been to acquire the app and let the 🐐do what the 🐐does best. The final in-app offer is would I would recommend to anyone. If enough of the community favors it, it could go a long way and take the edge off of the 🐐. As most of us know, the 🐐 requires green pastures because this pasture went up in 🔥💨. Thanks for a great experience and farewell.

not only the best reddit app, but one of the best iOS apps out there. Apollo has been the most-used app on my phone for all of the 4 or 5 years that i’ve owned it. it’s such an improvement over the default reddit experience that i can’t bring myself to stay on the site once they kill Apollo. and i really think it’s about the best iOS app i’ve ever used. Christian is so thoughtful and careful in every aspect of the app and has been so engaged and responsive with his users. things like the swipe to go forward gesture, tap the top bar to scroll to the top and again to scroll back, the little easter eggs hidden here and there, all felt so personal and full of heart in a way that’s truly rare in any piece of software. Thanks for everything Christian, Apollo will be deeply missed <3

Oh God Why didn’t text recovery work this time. I’m leaving 5 stars because this is by far the best reddit app, but leaving this review because for some reason the app didn’t recover my long post I was writing when I switched back from doing research in other apps, and it ruined my life for a minute. That feature in itself is worth it. I hate iPhone for doing whatever it does to delete the state of apps you previously were using, but this saves me (almost) every time since I’ll switch between 3 or 4 apps doing research and collecting sources. That and the extremely intuitive and rapid account switching for posting from alts, and in-app formatting and image upload, sidebar viewing, flair, tables showing, the automatic reader mode, awe man it’s just a magic app that I definitely spend way too much of my time on.

It physically hurts me that Apollo is going away.. I really hope the powers that be at Reddit change their minds about the new API pricing (though I have NO faith that they will), as I don’t use Reddit without Apollo. I CAN’T use Reddit without Apollo. Apollo makes Reddit readable and useable. I hope you find something else amazing to do, Christian, if the situation doesn’t improve. Thanks ever so much for improving sooo many lives with Apollo. I like to think that karma will pay you back for what you’ve done, and will do the same to Reddit. Thanks for all the years of usefulness you’ve provided for so many people. I’m really sorry it came to this. My fingers are crossed that you’ll create something just as useful and wonderful as Apollo for something else, and that I’ll love using that, too! Thanks for everything, and GOOD LUCK! 💋

Reddit Needs to Reimburse, Or Class Action. I’ve paid for Apollo Premium for a long time, and subscribed to Reddit Premium as well for my coins. It seems that this latest Reddit app broke Apollo and I can no longer browse Reddit: per the notes here! I left a one-star review on the official Reddit app, but are any other Apollo users forming a class action suit against Apollo for reimbursement of their fees? My example was imagine if Ford or Toyota suddenly blocked after market or third party car play systems, mirrors, lightbulbs, engine parts from working. This is ridiculous, predatory, anti-competitive behavior. Reddit official has horrible data privacy practices as well. So overall this change they made likely violates many US, EU, UK and California-specific laws.

Hands down, best app on the App Store. Wanted to start off by saying Christian (the dev) is a saint for making his changelogs to be *actual changelogs.* Also for a completely free app, it is downright insane. Not a single ad, the only income from this app is through donations (Which you should 100% donate). Christian is super active on the app’s subreddit, and always fixes bugs in this apps constant updates. Adding on , design wise, this app is amazing. Everything works so well, it’s super easy to use, and I’ve never had a complaint about the design of the app. Lastly, the sheer amount of features in this app is crazy. Compared to the official Reddit app, this app has it all. There are so many quality-of-life features that not many people know about, but make the app so much better than other reddit clients.

Downloaded Apollo a few years ago, refuse to look back. The Apollo app has features unseen in the vanilla reddit app, so much so that I forget that THIS is the 3PA. Being able to easily search within posts, customizable UI beyond just light/dark mode, a one time $5 purchase for no ads (in comparison to Reddit’s $6/month for no ads…), sending as an image vs a link, and so much more. I’ve tried out vanilla reddit again with the news of all 3PAs shutting down. After using Apollo for so long the official reddit app is near unusable. Unfriendly UI, limited search features, even making comments that have italics, spoilers, bold, etc is harder. The only thing reddit has that apollo doesn’t is natively being able to do polls. It’s been a real good run, can’t wait to see what Christian does next!

Keeps crashing with Touch ID.. Loving the app and experience except for some reason, when I go to open the app (been opened before hand) and I have the Touch ID feature enabled, the app will crash and just toggle through constant “Use Touch ID” pop ups. I can do I with my thumb resting on the Touch ID and it will still pop up over and over. I’ll hold my thumb away and it will do it too and then eventually stop. There’s no way to get out of it either. Pressing the home button will not take me back home. Double tapping the home will not take me to the multi tasked. Trying to tap “Cancel” on the use Touch ID message (if I can get to it fast enough) doesn’t work. Please fix this one feature so I can make this my daily Reddit app. Until then, I’ll keep using Narwhal.

Life altering mobile device application. I actually had to transmit this review via carrier pigeon from the astral realm so excuse me if my sentiments get lost in translation. You see, Apollo has not only changed my mortal life but also my understanding and connection with the universe as a whole. The seamless navigation, the S tier design and plethora of extra features…the fabric of my being just couldn’t handle it. My body eventually convulsed violently and I transitioned into a higher being. I believed this is what people referred to as “ego death” until I realized death was what I endured before finding Apollo. I realize that social media addiction is a genuine issue among my contemporaries but luckily (thanks to Apollo) I’ve been able to dodge that bullet. Thesis: This application behaves like some sort of Hyperbolic Time Chamber. By that I mean it increases my knowledge, power and overall efficiency but when I emerge from it I return to a world that seems to have been virtually standing still in my truancy (personal results may vary). This is the part where I’d normally thank the dev for producing such a glorious piece of art but I’ve come to realize (thru Apollo) that ultimately “we” are all the great Self so I congratulate me for this stellar experience.

Love the app! But.... This app has become my new go-to for Reddit. There are a couple of small features that could be implemented to make it a 5/5 for me (below) but it is a really good app that has continued receiving update after update! * Keyboard support: Add keyboard shortcuts / support when viewing through Apollo (press space bar to move down the page, command + left arrow to go back a page, arrow keys to move between articles, etc). This would add a whole other level to this app that I feel is currently missing. * iPad multi-pane viewing: The iPad screens are so much larger that it seems off to view a centered single column view for most of the UI. Put the home/favorites to the left and the feed view on the right. Would make flipping through subreddits and articles much faster given the larger screen real estate!

A Sad Goodbye. I’ve used Apollo for years and supported the development through Apollo Ultra and Pro. Apple likes to describe their products as “Magical” but in my opinion Apollo added more “Magic” to my everyday life than any individual product. The care put into the app, the beautiful design, the intuitive and seamless controls and the metric kilotons of content and optimizations made Apollo truly special, and the obviously superior Reddit client. I’ll miss Reddit, but Reddit without Apollo isn’t the Reddit experience I’ve loved using for years now… Good luck in all your future endeavors, although my support of Reddit will end on June 30th, you will have my support through the rest of your career! Much love, and thanks again for creating something that I loved using daily

Please fix broken messaging system. Almost perfect and 5 stars except for that the messaging system causes last message to disappear when refreshing, and then reappear with the next refresh while hiding the 2nd to last message from view. Refresh again, and it’s back to hiding the last message, one more time to display the last message and hide the 2nd to last message again. And so on and so forth. Essentially, I can’t rely on Apollo for messaging bc one never knows which messages aren’t showing up, and it’s been like this since the introduction of the new messaging system. So, I have to go back to using the Reddit app for messaging, essentially negating the reason I spent nearly $20 (with notifications if I remember correctly) to buy this app — to replace the official Reddit app. Great app held back by lack of maintenance as there’s an entire thread on Reddit where literally everyone has the same bug (zero people said they didn’t encounter it). Yet, the new “Apollo” app icons keep coming in. Dev, please spend some time fixing messaging for this of us who already paid for your app, just divert some energy from new features that you charge for. Thanks

Superior to All Other Reddit Apps in Every Way. The best app feature here is the App Dev’s community involvement via his app’s subreddit. I was happy to subscribe to both Pro and Ultra to support this app’s future development. I love the swipe actions so much, and that they are customizable, though I personally have no need to change from the default. The themes, notification settings, hide read posts, and seekrit app icons just put this one over the top. Highly recommended to anyone, even if you only use the free version. Which, by the way, does not restrict much of the app’s functionality. Purchasing Pro or Ultra is entirely optional to use the app effectively, but having the option there to support the dev in exchange for some extra features is great. Great job! Looking forward to what’s in store for the future.

:(. I was really excited for this because I hate Reddit’s official app. However the design of this, claimed to be “the way Apple would design a Reddit app,” is all wrong. Just because you use black and white, some of the same iconography and copied part of their settings menu does not make it similar to Apple. The teeny buttons with teeny spacing between them, the nonexistent margins, and overall lack of visual hierarchy makes everything feel cramped. There’s no room to breathe in there. Sometimes when I see an interesting post, but clicking it would lead to another site, I want to click into the comments of the post instead. With this app (on iPad at least) the comments button on each post is too close to everything to click. I’m now questioning if it’s even clickable or solely stats... It’s also not very intuitive. I spent too long trying to find out how to comment on a post, and tried and failed to figure out how to upvote/downvote comments. Please consult with a UX designer.

Better than the official app. It’s snappier, easier to navigate & all around better than the original app, which is quite rare for 3rd party client applications — most of the time, I feel like I have used 3rd party client apps for certain things only for a particular feature or two that are lacking in the official app. Other than these particular bells & whistles, 3rd party clients almost always fall short in all other respects compared to their official counter part. Apollo is the first client app I have used that gives you some bells & whistles, but also outdoes the official app in all aspects of primary functionality — let me say this: it is the only 3rd party client application that has completely replaced an official app for me! PS to the Apollo team: Would love to see you all make a twitter client one day!

This app is run by a legit superhero!. I came from the AlienBlue crowd from back when, and then went to another app shortly before hearing about this one. After using it for some time, I found that it more than fit my needs. It also did things other apps didn’t do and more. Next thing I knew I checked their subreddit and sure enough, it’s run by one guy! Have a question or issue? This developer springs to action and tries his absolute best to solve your issue! By himself! This whole app is thanks to him, and I definitely saved up and got the lifetime subscription. Including previously buying the pro subscription. Check this app out. It’s quite the diamond in the rough. I’ve had no issues for years and if I did, they were fixed with a smile and back pat from the developer. Thanks!

My only regret is I didn’t hear about Apollo sooner. I’ve used Reddit for five years. I’ve never used a third party app, I didn’t even know that was an option. Reddit making all sorts of horrible decisions recently turned me onto Apollo- wow. I didn’t know using Reddit could be so enjoyable, streamlined, easily understood, and well organized. I’m only angry that I never found Apollo sooner. It really does change everything for the better. Once it’s gone, I think I’m just going to sign off Reddit forever. It’s for the best, anyway. Godspeed, Apollo devs, you’ve made something incredibly useful and valuable here. It’s a crime that shameful money grubbing is forcing you out of the equation. 10,000,000/5 stars for all y’all.

Freaking Outstanding. Tried and True. I’ve been using Apollo for a while now, and I must say... this app is BY FAR better than any other Reddit app available on the App Store. I’ve tried a few and have found not one better. The entire experience is exactly what one would look for when browsing Reddit. In fact, I prefer using this app over browsing from my computer. One thing I like most about Apollo is the developer’s attention to people’s wants/needs. He genuinely cares and that can be seen quite clearly through my use of this masterpiece. This dev is who all devs should aspire to be. /u/iamthatis, you are my hero. Update: The man somehow managed to make it even better. Notifications, custom themes and icons, and a laundry list of other great features. I’ll never go to another Reddit app again. This is it. This is the best it gets.

My favorite app. I have been using and following this app since the initial beta that was limited to 1000 users. The initial beta barely worked and would crash going into settings and things barely worked. I followed each update and development closely and each update made the app more useful and stable until it was the most well designed and user friendly on my phone. This app took what made alien blue great and improved on every aspect including design. It is incredibly sad that this app will be going away because of Reddit’s business decisions. I look forward to seeing what this developer does next but it’s sad to see all the work he did over the years get thrown away with such short notice. (Also the custom icons are hella cool the trans flag one is based!)

We Will Not See Its Like Again. For me, and for countless others, Apollo was more than a way to consume Reddit on our phones or iPads … Apollo was Reddit. Top-shelf UI, silky smooth in its scrolling and gestures, a media player that handles a seemingly limitless number of file formats. Fast and reliable. And cut tragically short due to the greedy shortsightedness of the suits at Reddit. Thanks again, Christian. From the time I joined Reddit coming on six years ago, to now, as I wind down my accounts on the site, you have delivered the best possible experience for me. Even now as I immerse myself in Lemmy I find myself testing out all the apps to see what I will use on my phone and iPad. The winner will be the app that makes being on Lemmy feel the way Apollo made being on Reddit feel.

Always wanted to get into Reddit, but …. I have always wanted to get into Reddit, but it always seemed too overwhelming for me… enter Apollo! I’m not a techie-type person so I don’t know exactly how to explain how or why Apollo is so much easier for me to use and navigate the Reddit scene, but it is! I’ve been using Apollo for maybe 3 months now and have gotten so much out of it (especially relative to my 7+ years-old Reddit account). If we were using books as an analogy, Apollo is to Reddit what Cliff-notes are to Shakespeare. I am still reading Reddit content—and a part of the Reddit community, but it’s just more my “language,” or my speed. Thank you, Apollo, for allowing me to engage in the “Reddit experience” in a way that’s way more accessible for your average non-tech savvy, Gen X/Millenial, female iPad user.

Great app. Easy to use, customizable, and UI friendly. I downloaded this app after seeing a recommendation on Reddit since I needed a new client other than AlienBlue. I was using AlienBlue but after upgrading to an iPhone X AlienBlue was no longer supported and crashed every time I opened it. Once I downloaded Apollo and started using it, I was very happy with the app and it’s very user friendly and has customizable options. This is the first app where I liked it so much I thought it was worth donating money and purchasing the pro version. Donating also gives you the ability to change to app icon, which is cool. The free version is also great, basically being the same as the pro version. The only reason why I’m giving 4 stars is because there are still bugs that need fixing but other than that it’s a great app. I would recommend this over AlienBlue and the official Reddit app.

Apollo is the way to use reddit. Apollo is the way to use reddit. That’s the review. This app offers a far super user experience than the “barely working” drivel that reddit themselves are able to deliver. Really inconceivable why they would choose to introduce extortion-level API pricing when all this app does is provide the core reddit experience except better. This app increases the audience and the demand for reddit itself. You don’t scare off an app that does this unless you are insecure, desperate, or a combination of the two. It’s sad how third-party developers are misused by companies such as reddit. What a shame that I will have to scale back and possibly eliminate my usage of this service because of a terrible misguided business decision. Christian, I wish you only the best!

Really great, have pro, but 2 small things.. -The Pros 1) Gestures! Love that I can upvote with a swipe! 2) Comment threads are cleaner in this app IMO 3) the ability to lock the app with Touch ID is amazing and should be a no brainer for every app (although I believe it’s a pro feature :/ ) 4) The dark mode is far better than the dark mode in the stock app. Things pop a lot better 5) Different, adorable app icons! 6) a WAY better filter than any other app I’ve ever used for reddit 7) ability to flip voting button side based on handedness 8) far superior organization of your posts, comments, upvotes, saved, etc. -The cons 1) The touch zone for the upvote button needs to either be bigger, or not be able to collapse the post in that bar. 2) Would love a tabbed view where I can see PMs, and regular replies separately inside the inbox. 3) Also (correct me if I’m wrong) but they have yet to add the chat feature. 4) Pro is a well worth it upgrade, but not being able to post without it is kinda sucky. 5) notification are locked behind yet another monthly/yearly paywall -Verdict Love it! Never going back to regular app! Well worth the $2.99 for Pro, and considering Ultra!

Great App/Great Author. Amazing to interact with the author and give suggestions or report bugs. Christian, the dev, has his own subreddit and is very active in it. Lots of features in the app as well. Best Reddit app since Alien Blue died. Christian has made a great user interface here, interacting with Reddit is extremely easy on the go and it’s also easy to share posts and threads with friends. Having used the official Reddit app, the switch to this was an easy choice. I don’t have to worry about ads and can switch between accounts very easily (I use different accounts to facilitate easy access to certain types of content - I have a main account, an account for sports, and an account for games). Don’t think I’ve ever had a negative experience with Reddit that was caused by this app. Could not recommend it more.

Really pretty, tons of bugs. This was very impressive during my first two weeks of use. Until I learned about just how buggy this app is. I would give this a 5 star review if only they would fix the display on ipads, in either portrait or landscape mode. As it is, image previews get squished down in a weird way that they don’t do on iphone. Additionally, I have found the filtering system to be very buggy. After a point, subreddits don’t get added to the filtered list, no matter how many times I add it. Then there’s this wifi issue where, if you get disconnected from wifi in the middle of scrolling, it stops loading everything completely, even if connection is restored. Nothing will load unless you reset the app, and then you lose your place on the timeline. Speaking of timeline, it’s really easy to accidentally swipe into the top menu. And if you do that, you can’t just swipe back to where you were. You reload the timeline, and have to swipe aaaall the way back down. In short: really pretty, tons of bugs underneath it all. If the devs demonstrate that they can address these bugs, I will gladly get a membership. Because, in spite of everything, this is still the best way to browse reddit.

Half as long, twice as bright.. Without Apollo, Reddit wouldn’t have been as fun to explore. Without Apollo, some communities wouldn’t have been as strong as they are today. It is truly unfortunate that the greed of a CEO has lead to the downfall of such an amazing application. Your willingness to hear community feedback and quickly put it into action was what made Apollo so great. Being recognized by Apple so many times was testament of how great of an app you had built. Christian, thank you for the blood, sweat and tears you poured into developing Apollo. I’m sorry your project was forced to shut down in such a cruel way. Keep being an amazing person and developer. Will keep my eyes peeled for any future projects you come up with. Rest in Power, Apollo. Taken away too soon.
