Please update to the latest version of Safety tips.
Also, if you have set up Nara City, Nara Prefecture, please reset the location.
This Application notifies a user with EEW, Tsunami Warnings, Volcanic Warnings, Weather Warnings, Heat illness Warnings and Civil Protection Information issued in Japan. It is a free application developed under the supervision of Japan Tourism Agency.
The Application provides various functions useful for foreign tourists in Japan. The application is available in five languages: English, simplified and traditional Chinese, Korean, and Japanese.
＜Main functions and its utilization＞
-Receiving Earthquake Early Warnings, Tsunami Warnings, Volcanic Warnings, Weather Warnings, Heat illness Warnings and Civil Protection Information.
Before using the Application for the first time, select locations for which you wish to receive warnings from the Settings Menu (you may select a maximum of five locations (in Japan only))(*). Users will receive notifications when Earthquake Early Warning for local earthquakes of seismic intensity level 4 or greater, Tsunami Warning, Volcanic Warnings, Emergency Warnings , Heat illness Warnings, or Civil Protection Information are issued for the selected locations. Also, please make sure that the device which has not been changed a prediction point for more than 1 month from final change date of setting will not be able to receive notifications. If you turn automatic setting of a point on, you can receive notifications even in the case that it has been more than 1 month since you set a prediction point.
(*) It is necessary to activate the Location Information Service (GPS), if you wish to set locations by using GPS. GPS is also used to display your current location on the map.
-Earthquakes
Information on past earthquakes. A maximum of ten records (seismic intensity level of 3 or higher.)
-Weather Warnings
Weather Warnings (heavy rain, flood, violent wind, severe snowstorm, heavy snow, high seas, storm surge) and Emergency Warnings (heavy rain, violent wind, severe snowstorm, heavy snow, high seas, storm surge) issued for the selected locations.
-Volcanic Warnings
Currently issued Volcanic Warnings.
-Heat illness Warnings
Currently issued Heat illness Warnings.
-Medical Institutions
List of medical facilities accepting foreigners (Provided by the Japan Tourism Agency.)
-Evacuation advice / instruction etc.
Provides Evacuation advice / instruction information. Also provides Shelter Information. (Link to external application.)
※Please note that information of municipalities using "L alert" will be displayed.
-Learning Materials
Knowledge you want to know before a disaster occurs.
-Communication cards
A set of question sentences that can be used when asking questions to people around you during a disaster.
-Emergency Contacts
Numbers to call in case of emergency.
-Links
Links to other sources of information that may be necessary during disaster situations (contact information of embassy, nearest tourist information centers, etc.), and other information concerning disasters and tourism.
- Civil Protection Information
Safety tips delivers information regarding ballistic missile attacks among civil protection information from Fire and Disaster Management Agency.
While the application and various types of information are free, communication charges related to download and use of Application shall be borne by the user.

Consistant Crashes. Trying to add more than one disaster location crashes the app. The user interface and navigation are baroque and clumsy to use.
Unusable. Unusable, Bad coding
I cannot add locations. It is supposed to let you choose up to 5 locations but the button to add locations is not working
Update *crashes*!. Opens briefly, then crashes. And crashes. And crashes...
Will not stop crashing!. I was excited about this app, and it worked for a little while until the new update. Now it won’t stop crashing!
Not a useful app!. You definitely can find better info. just by googling! The app is not user-friendly.
Don’t bother downloading - Unusable. I downloaded this app on the recommendation of the JR Pass website. Couldn’t even set up my locations and preferences without it crashing and closing repeatedly. Doesn’t even save the info I had managed to add. I have no idea why “developers” would leave this app published. Pretty embarrassing.

A Must Have App in Japan Or Outside if You Care. Most updated, almost real-time status on things in Japan that you normally don’t experience elsewhere. Warnings about the pending disaster such as earthquake, volcano eruption, etc. provided promptly. Also lists the questions for foreigners to ask in multiple languages during the emergency. However user needs to know the name of areas of the interest to have more focused information provided. Highly, highly, recommended for travelers when traveling inside Japan.
Now working great!. All the negative reviews seem to be years old. The app works great and allows you to manually or automatically set your location (remember to update if you’re traveling). Relevant alerts in English are incredibly helpful.

App crashed when adding second location. This app is still crashing when you attempt to add a second location for earthquake warnings. Disappointing.
Hmmm.... This would be such a help for expats like us who live in Japan. However, the app will not allow me to add any locations, nor set my location using GPS, city, prefecture, or nearby landmarks.
New version crashes. Previous version was fine and I used it quite often. Updated yesterday and the app stays in the background, but disappears from the screen if chosen from the app stack. I can swipe to stop the app, but reopening it brings up the last opened settings tourist location page. Have replicated this issue on both an iPhone 6 and 6s Plus.

Can’t set up. Can’t get past initial setup
Does not work. Installed it on two different iPhones and even the initial setup didn’t work on any of them: the App failed first while setting the (home) country and later it wasn’t possible to use GPS to set the location and also didn’t accept any location to be set manually from their built-in drop down list.
