Camera Heart Rate Variability App Description & Overview

What is camera heart rate variability app? Camera Heart Rate Variability is the first app that lets you record, plot and export time and frequency domain Heart Rate Variability Features - without requiring any heart rate monitor.

Camera HRV uses a technique called photoplethysmography (PPG for short), which consists in detecting changes in blood volume during a cardiac cycle, by illuminating the skin and measuring changes in light absorption. PPG has become quite a popular non-invasive method for extracting physiological measurements such as heart rate and oxygen saturation. However, most applications today focus simply on heart rate or respiration rate.

Supported devices for the camera measurement: iPhones 5, 5S, 6, 6S, 6+, 6S+, SE, 7, 7+, 8, 8+, X, XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, 12 mini, 12, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, 13 mini, 13, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max

Camera HRV can assess cardiac autonomic regulation through quantification of sinus rhythm variability. Since HRV aims at quantifying autonomic regulations, it can be used as marker of sympathetic or parasympathetic predominance, and therefore become relevant in many applications. In athletes for example heavy training is responsible for shifting the cardiac autonomic balance toward a predominance of the sympathetic over the parasympathetic drive, and HRV analysis attempts to quantify this shift.

Other applications span from stress monitoring, assessment of pathological conditions and even emotional regulation during financial decision-making.

Main Features:
- extracts, plots, stores and exports heart rate, rr-intervals, time and frequency domain heart rate variability features (AVNN, SDNN, rMSSD, pNN50, LF, HF, LF/HF)
- configurable time window for feature extraction (30 seconds to 5 minutes)
- automatic RR-interval correction
- event annotation
- comparison between up to 3 recordings lets you get a better understanding of autonomic regulation and sympathetic/parasympathetic activity under different contexts in a glance
- data export/storage on iTunes and Dropbox (csv format, exports heart rates, rr intervals, events and computed features). Data export needs to be performed from the history -> recording view, by clicking on the export button (bottom left).
- integration with the Health app (writes Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability)

It works just fine. I was skeptical to buy after reading the previous reviewers rating. But it actually works quite well. Yes, it takes a little practice and actually requires reading the instructions. But compared to a $150 chest strap monitor, this app is genius. I actually went ahead and then bought the whole package of apps by the developer because I wanted to support a great app!

Doesn’t work, never gets good data. I’ve had this app for a couple of years. It never worked from the day I got it, even after multiple updates. I’ve tried it numerous times, and the app hasnever been able to generate an HRV number due to “poor signal quality. “ This is unfortunate, as the companies other app, HRV4Training, is excellent and highly recommended. Use that up with a heart rate monitor and you’re golden. Ignore this app, it’s not worth your time.

Keeps crashing. Used to love this but now every time I measure on my iPhone it crashes

Needs bug fixes. New re-design crashes every time I am in the middle of a read

Training Aid for a Winning Performance. Great app to manage your HRV without a HR monitor so you can execute an endurance sport training program without overtraining. I used this app for the last 3 months of my prep for the 2014 Boston marathon. I am a 56 year old female who wanted to run under 4 hours. Injuries due to over training kept my performances in my last 5 marathons between 4:01 & 4:06. Using HRV to assess the state of my nervous system (relaxed or stressed) I could better manage the level of exertion as well as rest in my daily training sessions. Result: 3:46:02 Boston Marathon which ranked me 56 of 768 in my division. A winning performance for this 'weekend' athlete.

Wish they had try before you buy.. Once it worked, every time after that it said that there is a data signal quality problem. I suspect it may not like my heart rhythm. Either way it is worthless to me. It also gives no advice on what your values mean.

Impressive app. I am a cardiologist exploring new ways to use smartphone as a diagnostic tool. This app is one of the best example of “iPhone as diagnostic tool” I have found. The design of this software is more sophisticated than other heart rate devices in the app store. The smoothing algorithm with cubic spline method is ingenious. The programmer validated his HRV measurement with validated clinical instrument and this enhanced the trustworthiness of his method. One small piece of advice: Bland-Altman plot and paired t-test should be used to compare the camera HRV with the clinical gold standard measurement. Overall, I am really impressed by its sophistication. I wish you good luck in your future project.

utterly useless app. ALWAYS measures my heart rate in the 110 range when it's normally 70s to low 80s

Didn't work. I just kept telling me "HRV not computed due to low signal quality". I kept my finger over the camera as it instructed.

Please make it available for iPhone 7+. It would be great if it was optimized for iPhone 7+, would be a 5 star if you can make it happen.

Timer won’t start. I have used this twice and now the timer doesn’t start. This is beyond frustrating.

Absolutely worthless. Readings for hrv never recorded or available so a complete waste of money

Logging not working. Logging to Dropbox does not work for me. Bummed.

improved but broken. The new interface is much improved, but the app now crashes frequently. In particular, the "compare" feature is completely broken. You cannot scroll through your recordings, and selecting one kills the app. Would also be nice to be able to send feedback through the app rather than through reviews!

What does it mean. I have no idea what any of the numbers mean. There needs to be more information about what are bad/normal/good readings.

Huge Improvement. The new version is a HUGE improvement in signal acquisition. Works much better and has more consistent analysis. I tested this against a laboratory grade HRV instrument and it was quite close. It would be a good app addition for lay people to state “normal” levels and explain the different features and how they impact health and HRV. Would also be nice to choose which studies to graph together to show trend. This is better than most consumer HRV. If you are serious about measuring you HRV and want it to be easy and accurate, you need this. Very reasonable price too.

User friendly. I like the added picture to show the camera is completely covered. I'm still trying to determine how best to incorporate it clinically.

Not what I expected!!!. I wanted an hrv app that doesn't need the Bluetooth chest strap and be able see weekly and monthly trends of rMSSD data. This app does give you a rMSSD value but there is no avg. or any type of trend that would allow you to see your recovery for future training. The app description describes being able to compare 3 recordings, but it also states it creates plots of the data implicating more than three data points. When trying to find instructions for how to use the app you are provided technical info on the accuracy of the data the app collects, not user instructions. The app works, but the user interface is clumsy, you are provided with data that is not organized in a manner for easy comparison for the purpose of reaching training goals, and user instructions are very minimal for a very un-intuitive app.

Export Error. When trying to export the data via email after selecting email the app closes by itself and I am not able to export the data. Please help.

Doesn't work at all.. Finger should only be over the camera and not over the LED or you will not get a lock. This is different from other apps that use the camera to obtain HR so I thought it was worth noting. The UI is really rough around the edges. The biggest issue right now is that the app assumes it gets to use the full screen and does not account for the pixels required by the status bar. As such, content at the bottom of the screen (And this includes user interface components such as buttons) falls off the bottom of the screen. I feel a lot more could be done with regards to formatting and presentation of data to improve the user experience of this app.

Close, but still not there. Marco’s doing great things for iPhone HRV apps, but this app needs some work. Key issues: - There’s no HRV readout. Seriously. There’s a bunch of HRV component measurements, but nowhere (NO where) in the app does it provide an HRV readout. Look up at the screen shots. You won’t see it. - No recent updates or bug fix releases - it’s been about 7 months… that’s too long. - The graphs look good, but there aren’t any horizontal axis labels, so it’s not clear what the graphs mean. - That diamond icon button… what does it do? I’d be willing to be that this app could be great if it had a few updates.

Decent App. Downloaded this to hopefully help my run training. The app works well, but I found it needs to be really quiet. In retrospect, I probably should have bought HRV4 Training since I'm not always sure how to interpret the data.

Seems to be great, but. Seems to work well and sooo much nicer than having to put on my chest bluetooth monitor. But I can't figure out most of what is measured and shown - app is in desperate need of help buttons on each screen to explain what its showing. I first learned of HRV at the Mayo clinic as they used a breathing app that they tuned for me, while having me hooked up to a bunch of sensors like skin temp, but key was that they tracked my breathing relative to my heart frequency to get them to track, without the breathing app my reading were totaly out of sync while i tried to relax. Then on the first redo with the app guiding when i breath in, hold, breath out, hold to total about 10second loops my readings were tracking very well, little more fine tuning to find what they called my resonant freq and i had app setting to use to calm down my body. So figured this app would be good to monitor the progress, but unfortunately it was not as simple to see as mayo setup that super imposed a breathing graph on too of the hrv graph. I really want give this app 5 stars, but can't make heads or tails of most of the data so have it a generous 4, hoping this changes soon as there is real genius in the app and its camera usage model, and would totally merit 5 if it can help the average person use its data to improve calmness,...

Stopped working. I used this app for the last year and really liked it but in the last month the timer has stopped working so it only tracks number of beats per minute and nothing else. Maybe it needs to be updated to keep up with the iPhone updates?

Heart rate needs work. I couldn’t get an accurate heart rate reading...not even close. Kind of a waste of money. I would recommend offering the app for free while you make your algorithms more accurate.

Not fully functional, it seems. I get a "HRV not computed due to poor signal quality" with every attempt, no matter what I do. It would help if I had more information about what that message means.

Stopped working, red circle doesn’t appear. I paid for this and a few months later it just stopped working. I can’t speak to the science behind it but it did work as sold for those months. Low rating is due to how it stopped working and the lack of support to fix. I uninstalled and reinstalled and still not working. Cleaned my camera. Re read directions, googled. Nothing. App developer says we can tweet him, I only use Twitter for work, so. Maybe they will see this and reply? FX.

NOT there yet! I'd give it more stars if I could get a refund! 😁. Recordings don't show up in display, but if you tap on the blank section it selects it blindly. Way too confusing. Doesn't give you s simplified reading of your HRV. Unless you are a cardiologist, you'll need to do some research and educate yourself to read it!

I want to love it.... I was excited to hear about the accuracy of this app, especially for the cost and ability to use my iPhone to measure HRV. However, no matter what I've tried, the HRV seems very difficult to measure. I tried 12 times and followed the directions provided by the developer on the website and it still won't work. I feel I have wasted my time and money trying to get it to work, which has probably changed my HRV in the morning due to frustration (try as I might not to become annoyed). I think trouble shooting advice should be part of the FAQ - otherwise I have to search a blog not only to figure out how to get an accurate reading but also to learn how to interpret the data. I'm sure the companion tracking app helps with that, but not if the program cannot calculate my HRV.

Now it works! (Mostly). At first, the app would only provide the rr intervals data. Now, for whatever reason, the other features work as well. But I still can't compare sessions within the app. This is disappointing, but I do like the fact that this is the only camera hrv app that gives AVNN, SDNN, rMSSD, PNN50, LF, HF and LFHF data.

Don't buy this app, doesn't work AT ALL!. I was interested in measuring my HRV to track my recovery and this app was not expensive, and didn't require any equipment. It doesn't work at all! It displays double whatever my heart rate is at the time, and doesn't want to record most of the time. When it does record, there is nothing in the other tabs; most importantly, it doesn't calculate my HRV which is why I bought it in the first place. I tried so many times, an even kept my finger on the camera for 2 minutes. Anyway, hopefully I have prevented anyone else from buying the app.

Inaccurate. I'm very sorry to say this app is very inaccurate and inconsistent. I work with a team physiologist in my training and we've been testing this for ease of use compared to chest strap and watch monitoring but it's not accurate and not worth the money. If I was consistent then it would still work but one test gave me a measurement of 102 and seconds later the test gave me a 51, ridiculous. So disappointed
