Great ability to control the speed so as to slowly observe each move. Finally, great background information for a deeper knowledge of each knot. Aligned with the authoritative Ashley Book of Knots. My new favorite app. I’ve never been able to master knots from books or pictures. The animations are so helpful! This is a great app DJ, can’t wait to watch it grow :)

I wish I had this when I was a Boy Scout!. It has been many decades since I was a scout, but having an app like this would have made my time in the woods much easier.

Fantastic, checks all the boxes. Great demos and explanations of knot uses as well as why you would or wouldn’t choose a different knot. Bear essentials is the best knot resource out there. Can make a beginner into a seasoned pro.

Weightless and Worth It. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for! DJ’s effective style of teaching matched with his knowledge of knots and rope craft in a single, weightless, concise and complete package. I also love that the app build is thoughtful of keeping the space requirements small, but allows for more detailed downloads for offline use as desired. Bravo. Can’t wait to see how this early version improves on an already-great design.

Pack it in. Pack it out.. Used this application as a refresher for the Boa Knot. Using that (plus a couple other knots) I was able to tie-down garbage to the roof of my car from camping.

Complete and Friendly. I really enjoy having the favorites section and allowing me to control the speed and angles of the demos - well thought out and executed app!

Best knot tying app ever!!. I’ve had many knot tying apps, now I just have one, and that’s this Bear Essentials app! It is the best, most easy to adapt to your specific needs. Try it, I’m an old school knot head, USCG, I promote knots, and there useful knowledge to all.

Not Your Average Knots. Who knew there were so many useful knots! Thx to DJ, I now know the way to tie a knot my late father used to make, the Canadian Jam Knot. As an RVer I’m sure many of these knots will come in handy.

Knowledge with you. Love this app. It’s having everything with you in the field where you can practice and use each knot. I have been trying to learn how to increase my knots and watching bear essentials has actually helped me to remember them.

Outstanding app. I used to carry cards to practice tying different knots now since I have my phone I have everything I need camping and showing grands, nieces, nephews how to tie knots with 3d animation. Once the app is downloaded it’s independent and doesn’t need data.

Honest review.. I downloaded this app to start practicing for an upcoming competition that involves 28 different knots. I’ve used other apps prior to this one, but Knots IQ is most definitely the best app I’ve used to get my practice in! Also, the customer service is unmatched. I reached out about the app freezing up on me, and within the same hour DJ responded and was very helpful. I have been recommending this app to all of my fellow co-workers and friends that are trying to learn how to tie knots like a pro!

Excellent illustrations. Very well done animations, I especially like the Playthrough ability to easily stop at multiple points throughout. Well worth the nominal cost of the app! One feature I would appreciate - add a little check box or grid for each knot or a few numeric scales (1-5 or so) that would rate key features, eg. good for on a ring, easy to undo, good with slippery lines, useful with different line thicknesses … you can probably come up with 5 or so characteristics and rate each knot in a small panel next to each animation.

My most useful app!. I have already installed this app on every device that I own. I love the 3D option, including the download all option. The fact that it’s offline compatible is ideal. The fact that there are no outside ads & that no data is collected sold me on this app immediately. Thank you so much for making an app that is totally fair to the user! I don’t use this app every day but every time I use, it’s even better than it was the last time.

Easy, even for beginners. I’ve always been terrible at knots. This lets you control the time and angle and is perfectly clear, even if the coordination required to make the knot itself is tricky. I wish I had this 30 years ago.

So good. There’s something that feels so good about tying the right knot in the right circumstance. I love having this app handy to help me do just that.

Nice. But small. Very good collection of knots, and like the animation. Wish the text was a bit bigger, or controllable, especially in menus where there’s lots of wasted “margin” space. Use the whole screen please.

Amazing! Read further…. One time app purchase for a lifetime? Finally an app that is useful without a subscription. More app developers need to take note. This app is amazing. I have been camping, hiking, long distance hiking, and in the outdoors for over 40 years. I learned my initial knots from leaders in my Scout group by a hands on approach. This app takes the same approach to learning by tapping into each person’s modality of learning. What is most interesting is that there are knots that I have not experienced which are featured in this app. What a great tool to learn something new and practical.

Great Scott! 3.62GB!. While the app adequately teaches knot tying and it has some nice features like custom categories, there are a number of issues I have with it. First, Let’s talk about the elephant in the room… literally. This app is huge. It takes up more space on my phone than any other app save my Photos library. If they double the number of knots in the app as they have indicated they plan to do, we are talking over 7GB! Second, The app claims it can be used offline. This isn’t entirely true. I was recently on a flight and while my phone was in airplane mode with no internet, the animations load, but the knot info does not display and I get an eternally loading spinner. Third, when the app is first used you have to wait 15 minutes for the content to download and you have to babysit the download and make sure your phone doesn’t go to sleep. Then if there is a content update, you have to babysit it again to make sure the update completes. If it doesn’t complete you have to start over which is very frustrating. I consider an app offline if it works completely without internet. Since the knot info won’t load without internet and internet access is required for knot updates, I consider the developer’s claim of “offline” false. Fourth, if downloaded on an iPad, the app is just a zoomed in and pixelated version of the iPhone app and is not optimized for iPad and landscape mode isn’t an option either. Fifth, the Search button often does nothing when pressed. Sixth, some of the categories are pretty weak. For example the fishing category only has 4 knots and I don’t think anyone uses the double fisherman’s bend for fishing despite its name. Seventh, the app is slightly slow to load the animations on my iPhone 15 Pro and is much worse on my older iPad and occasionally the app will crash.

Fantastic outdoor resource!. Downloaded this app and had a little trouble getting it to finish the extract, but redownloading it seemed to do the trick. What an incredible wealth of knowledge at your fingertips! Every conceivable knot for every scenario and activity. The animations are really neat and show you graphically and in an easy to replicate fashion how to tie each knot. Well done, Bear Essentials Outdoors!

Best Knot App I've Used. In 2020 we bought a hobby farm (an echo from my childhood). Suddenly needed lots of knots. Tried several apps, this is the best. Graphic demonstrations are spectacular. Play them slow to learn, or fast for a simple reminder. 3D is available, but I generally haven't needed it. Use-cases, explanations, etc. are thorough. And connects seamlessly to blog articles for more in-depth discussion. I bought the premium version, got more than my money's worth.

Incredibly useful. This app is amazing. I’ve been wanting to learn how to tie knots for years and this is everything I needed. The animations are easy to follow and everything is divided up into sections and easily searchable. So whether you are sailing, rock, climbing, fishing, or camping, spend the five bucks for this app it’s worth it. Regarding the tricky install, I just had to close it out and open it again for everything to load up properly. Thanks for building this…It must’ve been a ridiculous amount of work to put this app together.

Info Galore!. This app offers a lot of info! Firstly, the color graded rope is a smart feature. There are many knots, group by use type and knot type and you can create your own lists. The user can scrub through a knot forward or backward, a handy feature when you want to hone in on a particular portion. The developer has clearly made this app as a tool to deep dive into knots, with blogs, similar knots, use examples and more. Very impressive tool, well worth the expense, and then some.

Well Worth It!!!. I have been trying to practice knot tying using a book, but this app is the new go to. Seeing thee knots in 3D makes all the difference.

Theatrical Stagehands Essential. Whether you’re a new theatre stagehand or someone that just wants to learn new knots, this app has been very helpful and easy to navigate. All the knots you need in one app.

Worked great til it didn’t. Love the app look and design, but since the last app update it freezes constantly and randomly. Browsing through Knot Finder— freeze on random screen. Get to a knot you want to read the details about. Works. Touch the Video tutorial button. Freezes. It got bad enough at one point it won’t let the iPhone shut the screen off but I could hear the audible “click” sound pressing my power button. EDIT: updated my rating after Developer response. I’ll have faith it gets fixed.

Very buggy. Full of bugs — eg it arbitrarily doesn’t play (pressing play button doesn’t “play” the animation), the UI is buggy and confusing, many times when I click a knot it just doesn’t open. Quite frustrating when you’re actually trying to use it live — I’m instead opting to just google the knot and follow pics

Valuable. This kind of app creation and delivery with no data capture or sharing added to the value of knot taking make this app my all time favorite. It is like having my scout book on my phone.

Knot IQ. I’m on the hunt for a reliable way to learn knots offline. Knot IQ seems like a great fit. I noticed that the setup took a bit longer than expected, but that might just be me. The animations are great to visualize exactly what the instruction is teaching.

Best Knot App EVER!. I love this app! The plethora of knots and lashings that are in it will make your head spin! The animations are smooth and super clean. You can speed them Up or slow them down to go step by step. What I really like is you can download all of your favorite knots and lashings so that you have the, Available with ought being connected to the internet! Updates are included and once you buy the app, you get free updates for life! Give it a go! You won’t regret it!

The animations rock and are worth figuring out the download!. Don’t be discouraged by the download process. Just turn off your screen’s auto lock feature for the download and turn it back on after. It took my phone about 45 min to download the app, but now it’s installed for offline use when I’m out in the mountains and really need some knots. The animations are ELITE! You can pause, rotate in 3 dimensions, speed them up, slow them down, slide the progression tab so you see them tied in reverse if you want. There has never been a better way to visualize how to tie a knot. Being a knot, hitch, and bend junkie, I love the look on people’s faces when you transform a rope into a multitool. You’ll hear phrases like “How the heck did you do that” and “Wait, show me that again”. Knots are so useful There are a few bugs to work out with the app, but I’m confident they’ll be fixed. I’ve learned that patience is worth it.

Great app thus far. I just downloaded this app and I’m very impressed with it. I am an old man and do not use knots every day but sometimes I need to tighten something. Now instead of going and searching the internet I come to the app to find the nest knot I need. Thank you. Great job.

A great resource. I own serveral knot books. This app is way more useful. The animations are top notch. If you want to develop your knot skills, this app is the best way to learn knots and recall knots. Highly recommended.

My favorite knot app so far. I have several knot apps, and have used them all over the last year. This wad a new app and didn’t think I needed it but figured since I am already a Bear Essentials fan I should try. The animations and animation controls are great. The various attribute pieces, from the name to the common name to intended uses, is well described. I really love the layout and organization. Its a terrific app. I have Knots Guide, Knots 3D, Grog, and Knots Guide. All very good in their own respects but this Knot IQ is for me the most useful and easiest to follow.

Just what I’ve been looking for. All the issues other people have commented on have already been fixed. I can’t believe the level of detail included in this app - the ability to zoom in and change the speed with slight variations in color makes it easy to follow along and has already significantly improved my camping game! I really appreciate the blog posts that go into more detail about each knot and what it could be used for. I can’t wait for more videos showing additional demonstrations. Very impressive!!

Amazing App. It’s very rare that I’ll pay money for an app. However, I can justify spending money on this one. It’s more like you’re purchasing a book of useful ways to tie things together that’s always on you and the animations are fantastic.

Freaking awesome. Every knot available in your pocket with beautiful animated illustrations of how the knots are tied. You can get them online or off. So if your remote in the woods or in your back yard connected to WiFi. It’s overwhelming how many knots there are. The only thing I could see adding is pictures of illustrations of what these knots are used for. Like net making or making a ladder. Just a snapshot of different uses for the knots because it is overwhelming how many knots there are who could know all there uses. Such a great app to have.

Very good app. I couldn’t have dreamt of an app that was better designed for this purpose. The UI is amazing. I love how you can view the knot in 3D and watch a video that you can rewind, pause and move the knot around to look at it from multiple angles. LIFE SAVER!. This is the best knot app on the market for many reasons!! Here’s a few of them. 1. Being completely offline just makes sense I live in a Van and I am completely off grid sometimes so being able to look at the knots I need to set up my tarp offline is life saving!!! 2. My new go to app for hunting and camping. Im an avid hunter. This app helps me a lot in the bush. From tying my tents to transporting the animal. It came in handy big time! Big help in moose country for sure.

Always Wanted the Card Kit. I was brushing up on some knots from the videos on YouTube before I go on an upcoming camping trip, and I always wanted to buy your knot tying flash card kit but this is even more convenient and has more value! Love the filters, being able to favourite, and be able to search by use-case. Love that its a wiki essentially for knots, with term definitions and keywords. I am worried this app will take up more space however, so maybe there should be an option to choose what type of knots to have downloaded, based on use case or for essential knots, etc? Of course I don’t know what needs I will have when out in the bush. Maybe I could opt for images instead of 3d video assets for the knot tying steps? Love the app so far! Proud to support you since I always love the videos and the way you teach!

Amazing knot reference guide!. Absolutely loving this app! It is simple, easy to follow, and teaches you very easy to use techniques! You can tell that the individuals responsible for this app know what they are talking about and have much experience using these.

Top quality, truly amazing. The idea of 3D models to learn knots is just genius. You can watch the knots being tied from any angle, you can even scrub back and forth at your own pace when there’s a particular step that’s challenging. I really can think of anything better than this. The list of knots is huge too, plus it’s from Bear Essentials who are really experts at this.

No knots are available. I keep waiting for the asset download to finish, and once it does, any knot I try to look at says “Knot Unavailable “. So far, the app has been useless. I have tried deleting and reinstalling. Hasn’t worked yet.

Offline Issues. (update - Version 3.2 has fixed the offline issues described below. Lots of new content and some refinement in look and feel.) A couple of additional comments: 1) The update wiped out my favorites. 2) “Info” on each knot is not available online. understand why blog entries, videos, etc. are not available offline, but the info content should be. 3) I couldn’t find instructions on how to search by ABOK number, but finally figured it out … type JUST the number in the search field. Also, you can find all knots without an ABOK reference by searching for “n/a”. 4) Suggestion: Info on a given know often references related knots. It would be nice if these were links to those knots in the app, as otherwise you have to search for them. All in all, a good update. The developer is exceptionally responsive to feedback, which I really appreciate. Given the history of improvements and releases, this has the potential for becoming a premier knot-tying app. FYI, for a superb example of why the 3d capabilities of the animation are so useful, try figuring out the “Swiss Seat” without it. Also, swiping the screen to control playing of the animation gives much finer control than swiping the Playthrough bar. Swiping vertically is chaotic, but swiping up/down just OFF vertical gives very fine control with no jumps. [original review] Offline is problematic. While the app will work completely off-line (Wi-Fi off and cellular off), it only works this way if the app was already launched when online. If I try to launch the app fresh (not already running in the background) and I’m completely off-line, it hangs, getting the endless Spinning circle. If it was previously launched and running in the background, and I subsequently “launch” off-line, the app will work fine. But this is not a true launch, it is bringing up the app already running. If I restart the phone offline, no apps will be running in the background and the launch will hang. If I delete the app from the running apps list and attempt to do a fresh launch of the app offline, it will hang. It’s important to be able to do a fresh (or cold) launch when you are completely off-line, as you may have to restart your phone in a situation where you don’t have any online access. I’m using an iPhone 13 on the current release of iOS. I have the latest version of Knots IQ. I have tried every combination of settings in the app and IOS, re-downloads of the app, re-downloading 3-D for all knots, etc. No matter what, the app will not properly launch cold off-line. Also, please note that the close app menu function, while it closes the window, does not shut down the app on iOS. It is still loaded in the background. I have used Animated Knots by Grog for years. I like knots IQ more for a variety of reasons. But unfortunately cannot rate it higher at this point because of the issues above. Fix these definitively and this is an easy five star review. Finally, I had tried sending this in the “contact us“ function in the app, but it would not send.

Great App – just what I needed.. This database of knots and how to tie them is fantastic tool for beginners like me. Gone are the days when I go to a big box store store like Home Depot and pray that my overdone, badly made knots will hold that 4x8 sheet of plywood to the roof of my car. It’s a learning app that’s fun and engaging to use. Thanks, DJ.

Never loads the knots. Half an hour later and it says it is still loading the required assets. The next time in the app I go to a knot and it says Knot Unavailable.

Nice resource but incomplete. You're missing the Ian knot for shoelaces! It's the fastest way to tie shoe laces and is quite durable.

Tiny. this app is so small as to be unreadable on an iPad. Is there a different iPad version or a way to scale this up to full screen? If not it will be money ill spent.

AWESOME App and NO Subscription Required!!. I’ve never written a review but this one is so good, it deserves one. As a novice knot maker, this is a great resource to have and the fact that you can access all the info offline, makes it even better. I also love that it’s not subscription based — we have enough of those. Great job on the app DJ!
