Faelandaea - An Audio Nightmare
This app had the potential to be one of my favorite apps for any mobile device ... however at this time I absolutely cannot stand to listen to this app. CBS apparently has no clue what audio normalization is. Volume issues with this app are a nightmare in my vehicle.
When I did try this app out, I spent a full week trying to see how it would fare as a primary news app while I am on the road as a truck driver. The result was a constant battle with the volume control. Every time the story would change from one narration to the next, I either could not hear the speaker at all or the sound would blow my ears out.
I quickly realized that this was actually causing a major distraction in my driving. With the amount of time I was putting into the volume control, I may as well have been texting and driving or something just as dangerous.
I conclusion, I have decided to ditch this app and go back to another news app to get my news while I drive. I wish I did not have to as the other app spends more time asking for donations than actually delivering news to my ears. But frankly I’d rather put up with that than the terrible audio nightmare that is the CBS News Radio app.
When CBS hires someone who has a clue on audio normalization, I’ll be happy to return to this app.
Jack_McCoy - Good News, Awful App
Awful interface that looks like a website from the late 90s. The app is all over place — sometimes it crashes, sometimes you’ll get an unskippable ad when you open it (though sometimes you won’t). Half the time it crashes when you try to download audio for offline listening. It’s hard to believe that one of the biggest, most powerful media companies in America has an app this amateurish.
Please get this app into the 21st century and I’ll happily update my review.
MommyMona - Needs an update!
For the last several months when I open the app it will play between 5 seconds to a minute or two and then shut off. I use the sleep alarm function and it has nothing to do with that. Every night I have to restart the app. Annoying! But I love the news updates at any time, only it’s boring I. The weekend because it isn't updated enough.

It was crashing but then I deleted and reinstalled new and it works again. Please do and poof it will be fixed!!

jgrnt1 - CarPlay is a mess!
I’ve used this app in my car via CarPlay to get the hourly news and half hour updates. Though a bit buggy, it’s generally worked for quite a while. It has not worked properly since iOS 15. I can get the live feed, but all the recorded news shows as blank. It’s not that it won’t play. The CarPlay app doesn’t even show the podcasts. They are still on the iPhone app and will play from there, but I don’t access my phone while driving. That’s what CarPlay is for.

Blackhound958 - Consistently Crashes
This app is horrible. I used to download the World News Roundup podcast every morning before leaving for work. Now apparently the only way to get the podcast is through this app, which crashes almost every time I hit the download button. Other times it will show as downloaded, but then nothing plays back. Did anyone bother to test this before releasing this version? Either fix this app or make the Roundup available again through the Podcast app.
Woodchup88 - Knock, Knock! Anyone home!
Seriously, this app needs an overhaul! Always stops playing within a few minuets after you open the app - you must manually restart it using the Play button. To make matters worse, there is endless bragging about CBS news and all the rewards they have received, over, and over, again! Today it stopped playing after the first news report and refused to work at all - even after I restarted my iPad. Nuff said!
Snowburst - Need a KCBS App
I was expecting KCBS so that I could receive info on Bay Area emergencies - e.g., live updates on huge Sonoma and Napa county fires. Instead, a steady stream of national news. I can get that elsewhere. We need a KCBS app so we can get urgent local news when out of town. Not a steady repeat of other stuff you already broadcast five times.

I used it for CarPlay. But after last update they took away the ability to choose what you want to listen to. Support is terrible. At some point they will probably fix it. But given the history. They will break it with an update in the future and take months to fix it again.
Update - I tried it again and it just doesn’t work in CarPlay. It just will not load any content.

I read the negative reviews from years ago and thought, “Well they must have fixed it by now.” Nope. On the iphone once you open it it plays news radio, the off switch doesn’t work, so you have to swipe it off your screen to turn it off. Oh,and the ads are intrusive. That’s as far as I got before deleting it.

when you open the app, all it does is give you a weight icon you never got any content. It sure as hell does not work with CarPlay like it’s supposed to but just does the same thing nothing happened so it’s this is an absolute piece of junk. How the hell I got on to the Apple Store mysteryI thought apps how to actually work before they could be on the store. What a joke
Racer C - Poor quality app
Unless I’m at home or some other high speed portal, the refuses to fully load. There are many other buggy issues with this which makes it difficult to listen to the top and bottom of hour newscasts. But these problems have been going on for years, so it shows me CBS just doesn’t care. :(

Why do I keep waiting for the update to this app? Every time I run it I get extremely frustrated when two sound tracks play simultaneously and the volume is difficult to adjust. Honestly my advanced Computer Technology high school students put out better projects than this garbage.

The reporting is fantastic. HOWEVER, junk app. The largest issue is no scroll bar! 90% of bad stuff with this app could be fixed w/ a scroll bar.
The app will stop in the middle of a
story for no reason or b/c you loose connection for a second and you have to listen to the whole story again or just quit. Fix w/ scroll bar.
Sometimes the report takes a 2 min break where a commercial will go but there will just be dead air and they don't take the half a minute it would take to edit out you also can't skip through because no scroll bar... FRUSTRATING!
Also, volume level changes and this can pull you out of a story.
Also there is no way to download stories for listening to later. I live in the country I know I am going to drop signal 3+ times on the way home so I download what I want to listen to then delete later. This app forces me to stream.
Check out NPR's app. They have done the app better but the reporting is head and shoulders better at CBS. If it was not for your impartial quality reporting I would have deleted this 5 min after getting it. PLEASE FIX!!!

When I have copied something from the notes on my phone to the clipboard and then open the CBS News Radio app, I get a notification saying that CBS News Radio has pasted what I had on my clipboard. Why would this app need to know what anyone has on their clipboard??

I have been using this app for several years and the new version that just updated for iOS 11 -- I am still on 10 myself -- will not even load. It starts to download content and then totally disappears. It's a no star app at the moment. Please fix this.

Where to start. Takes forever to load and at times won’t connect to internet. Podcasts won’t load properly. Downloaded podcast will not play. I NEED THIS APP FOR CLASSROOM USE. I have used KCBS for 35 years and I am now having to use the ABC news app as a replacement. PLEASE UPDATE.

There is great material but it’s so buggy I don’t use it often. Ads and stories run at the same time or multiple stories run at the same time. Stories stop abruptly. No consistency in volume. It was much better as part of the old app. This needs fixed badly.

I used the app everyday, but every time I try to open recently the app crashes. Seeing other reviews, I tried to delete and reinstall, but continued to crash. Worthless real estate on my phone now.

I downloaded this app for one reason: it said it works with CarPlay. But as other reviewers have said, that is a lie. So, I am deleting this app and will just use the CBS News station that is available inside Apple Music.

It’s a shame CBS allows this app to be used. The news/sound comes on without you even opening the app. Stories start then stop or switch to another sound source... rating F-.

The app no longer shows up on Apple CarPlay although is still is being marketed as CarPlay ready in the App Store and on Apple’s website. Please fix this, it has been months!

This app quickly made it to my iPhone home screen. Very easy to use, and truly well-designed and programmed. There are really only two strong radio news organizations these days, in my opinion: CBS Radio and National Public Radio. Each approaches news on the hour about the same.
The differences come in the two networks' other programming offers. NPR is great with the long-form. CBS, given they serve commercial stations, have a lot of short programs that are exceptional. Bill Whitney's "Sidebar", Harley Carnes' "Not Just Another Story", Harry Smith's "Just A Minute", and many others are short, informative and well-produced. The way this app serves them up, they are great quick bites of stories and commentary you might otherwise miss.
You can always find an NPR station, it seems. CBS Radio News affiliates are all over as well, but often are on lower-powered AM signals. When I am in the car in south central Wisconsin, I can pull in WBBM-AM from Chicago for CBS News. But even when close to Madison, it is hard on most radios to get their weak-signaled local affiliate. As a long-time listener over three decades living in Chicago, I am happy to have an app that offers so much from CBS Radio News. And you can't beat the price: free.
dmagoo - Bad Ads locking phone up
This App advertisers are attempting to take me to the app store to buy without a touch/click and most of the time do not succeed and locks up the app. Forces me to reset/restart the phone even with latest ios. Makes me wonder if they could make my phone buy the app if I did not have a lock on it. Perhaps that is why it is locking up the app.
If not fixed, I will be forced to uninstall. Otherwise, I like the app.
Seems every time I turn around, others have more control of my phone than myself.
Mister8tch - Why update?
The previous version was clearer, less cluttered. You open the app now and something/someone is talking at you. I prefer to choose what I want to listen to, with a clear menu that offers choices when I log in. This update does not give you that chance. Who is it that is turning stable and serviceable apps into mazes that must be conquered? I love CBS news and you had a great app. Now you have one that is cutsie. Congrats to the nerd who concocted this mess and who just knew the rest of us would see the world like he does. Wrong.
News Wonk - Very good but could be great ...
Great content but the app would benefit from:
A time slider which would allow listener to fast forward and rewind, as well as displaying total time and elapsed time for each clip.
Retention of older clips for all shows and for a longer period of time (I'd be interested in hearing what the lead story was earlier in the day, or hearing Eye on Washington from the previous day, etc.)
Inclusion of additional features, like Dave Ross and The Osgood Report.
A weekly program guide for regular programming on the live feed.
Some “fun” items, such as the promos for the coming weekend's sports programming, e.g. College and NFL Football on Westwood One.
You are well on the way to a 5-star rating. I hope this feedback helps!
Joe Sylvia - I like this app
This app is awesome. I like to listen to CBS News whenever I can. The only thing I don't like about it is that it is not available for the iPad. Also, I read the description and it said that all CBS radio newscasts, with the exception of the CBS World News Roundup and the CBS-TV newscasts are for three minutes, and they are actually four minutes (five counting the one minute commercial break).

This app is just flat out annoying. This morning I couldn't even get around the Verizon add that I'm required to tolerate for the first minute or so after I open it?!? The option to get past the pre-roll after its done playing just isn't even there? UGH. When it doesn't crash it can be decent, the content needs to be updated more often and the same exact 5 minute stories can run back-to-back fairly often. Too bad there really aren't any better options out there.

dgiannino - App hasn't worked in weeks
Up until a month ago I listened to the latest newscast in the on demand section of the app daily. For about a month the app hasn't played and I have been hoping you would send out an update to fix the bugs. When I go to play the app (connected to wifi), it looks like it is trying to refresh, but then stalls before it actually plays anything. The initial screen will play content sporadically, but I am only interested in the latest newscast information that you broadcast.
Please fix soon or I will delete the app
TheButtry - New update is awful.
I used to use this everyday. The new interface is clunky and it keeps kicking me to the App Store to buy advertised content... even when I'm not touching the phone. Too many ads overall. Get rid of the twitter and facebook feeds on the home screen. It would be helpful to put key programs on there instead. For example "World News Roundup" and "60 Minutes" are a few tabs back and tough to pull up when driving.
I'll get my radio news elsewhere.

Updated the version on my iPhone 5s 7.1 and left the old one on iPod. Both seem to work ok. I use on my bus commune daily and seems fine. Noticed new version has a news summary on occasional starts. Found you can skip straight to live radio by pressing pause and play to skip summary :) still get to listen to my 60 minutes podcast downloads so still happy
CBSNewsMan - Love It!
I have to say at first I work for CBS News. Never the less, I love this app. As a news junkie it is nice to always get the most recent news first and the breaking news function is relay informative. It is just nice to check in and hear the most recent or listen for a while and get a host of great content.
