What is portfolio armor app? Portfolio Armor helps you hedge your stocks and ETFs by showing you the optimal put options to give you the precise level of protection you want at the lowest cost. The capability to scan for optimal collars, which can lower the cost of hedging further, is available as an in-app subscription. A current list of Portfolio Armor's top names, which tend to beat the market most of the time, is available as another in-app subscription.
How it works:
You enter your US-traded stock or ETF position, and the maximum downside risk you are willing to accept for it (your "threshold"). Portfolio Armor then uses its proprietary algorithm to instantly scan and analyze all of the available put option contracts for the stock or ETF, searching for the optimal put option contracts to most economically hedge the position.
About Portfolio Armor’s proprietary algorithm:
Portfolio Armor’s algorithm was developed in conjunction with a postdoctoral fellow in the financial engineering department at Princeton University. It is model-independent and does not rely on any parametric assumptions, so there is no chance of model error. In some cases, the cost of protection may be higher than the loss you are looking to prevent. In those cases, Portfolio Armor will inform you that no optimal options are available.

Great App - Does exactly what it is suppose to do - Huge Time Saver!. This application is a huge time saver - you could spend hours sifting through puts of various strike prices and time frames looking for the best hedge. Or you can input a couple of numbers and let this application tell you what is available. The fact that it cost 12% to hedge a 20% draw down for 6 months should tell you something about the volitility of what you are investing in. Don't blame the app for not reducing the cost of puts! The app did exactly what it was suppose to - it let you know for a give security - protection is expensive - and it did this in 30 seconds instead of you having to do the calculations on your own. If you can find a more efficent put - this would be a reason to complain - but don't complain because you don't like the market. I use the the applicaiton to compair the difference in cost to insure different securities - if you are looking for cheap hedge for a 10% down side - you are not likely to find it - that's the market. I would like to see if the developers can come up with some easy way to research bear put spreads - as these can provide you with a limited range of down side protection for less cost. As for the rating - this application gets 5 stars - because it works great and gives me good information.
Excellent App. An easy way to find the least expensive options to hedge. I like the new feature that lets you chose different expiration dates and compare the annualized cost.
Hedging Bets. While I'm only a small time investor, it's fantastic to see products like Portfolio Armor come to market. In these turbulent times hedging one's bets is not only prudent, but becoming a necessity. Large professional trading organizations have had the advantage of access to advanced algorithms for some time, now individual traders can inexpensively add to their set of investment tools and level of the field. disclaimer: I'm a big fan of the app designer and appreciate his efforts to empower the little guy in finance.

Didn't see that one coming. First you pay for the App- Then you have to pay a subscription fee ... Didn't see that one coming It may be the best app in the world, I'll never know...
Very simple app. Enter the symbol, the share count, and the level of protection in percent drawdown or absolute lowest price, get the kind and count of puts to buy. It provides the best buy for odd lots as well as rounds, unless it cannot. Unfortunately, finding optimal puts for tight protection (10% or lower drawdown) seems almost impossible, even with the VIX at 17 as I write this. Also, optimal puts seem to be rather too close in time for comfort. Paying 12% for six months' protection from a 20% drawdown (worst case I saw) doesn't make me feel comfortable. It doesn't do fractional shares or lots under 100. Wish I could input the price I'd be wiling to pay, rather than max drawdown. Wish the help text for the drawdown field were not obscured by the keyboard. Keep these points in mind before you buy to ensure that the app fits your purposes. Perhaps better for the institutional investor than the individual hedger.
