OnX Backcountry: Trail GPS App App Reviews

Absolute Must Have. My wife and I just went on our first backcountry adventure in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario. We did not go hiking, but we went canoeing. It’s not something offered as an activity in the app, and we had a paper map as well, but without this app, we would not have been able to complete our trip. We came across a beaver dam and weren’t sure which way to go, but you could clearly tell with this app. I created offline maps with it and was able to see exactly where we were supposed to go. I would love to see this app add paddling as an activity and the ability to create routes and stuff. It was awesome to have, though. I have heard others rave about it and I want to rave myself. My wife and I LOVED it!

Highly disappointed. OnX Backcountry has two good features and that’s the offline maps and 3D maps other than that I highly suggest Gaia or CalTopo over this app. Slope angle shading is vital in backcountry missions, map layers are impossible to find on this app. You get 100x more information on maps on both Gaia & CalTopo. I’ve used CalTopo for years and have had a much better experience. I’ve used Gaia for a week, and OnX for a week. Gaia for being out in the backcountry and tracking while on a mission is amazing, CalTopo for when I’m planning missions at home is how I use the two together. OnX has 100% lost it for me, if I hunted, I’d use OnX, otherwise no benefit to other maps to most backcountry users. Especially since you can use CalTopo for free and still get more info than OnX....

The Best. I’ve tried a lot of maps. This one really crushes. Shows trails caltopo doesn’t have that lead right to the crag. If you rock climb, this will definitely be your go-to because it also shows the routes from Mtn Project. Hiking and biking trails also look very accurate so far. And I like their clean map overlays. The 3D mode also looks great for scouting backcountry ski trips. Just do the 7 day trial and you’ll see how good it is.

Planning made easy!. This is the most functional app I’ve ever used for planning backcountry tours. The tools and downloadable maps along with a tracking feature lets you adjust on the fly to conditions and safety. It’s worth the money and with Beacon Guidebooks being implemented, it will give more options for tours and hopefully spread out the crowds to ensure everyone has enjoyment of a tour in the mountains!

Good for basic travel. I have really only used this for skiing and mountaineering. Route making tool works well and 90% of trails appear on the map. Being able to see the current local avalanche forecast is great, and the slope angle tool layering is perfect. Being able to save maps for offline use is probably the most useful part. Having a pan, tilt, and rotate tool would be helpful but overall it works well for most backcountry ski planning. Updated winter imagery would be helpful, the current imagery is 5-10 years old. The ability to toggle between winter and summer imagery in the ski mode would be helpful for identifying recent avalanche paths as well. Overall a pretty useful app that makes backcountry ski touring and mountaineering trips easier to plan and safer overall.

Flashy, some novelty, inaccurate elevations. I purchased at a promo rate but I’m not certain about it. I have some other apps that I consider easier to use and more reliable. The routing tools seem interesting and the new climbing mode is great. My sense is this is geared towards snow more than anything. Where I’m struggling the most is with the up and down elevations on hikes. For most of the hikes I’m interested in the numbers are way off by a thousand feet or more. So I end up consulting all my other apps because I don’t trust the data in OnX. This ends up wasting time. Finally I don’t believe the app has enough community usage for trail reports to be useful. Would love to have these reports for MTB but it’s just not there. The trails are a bit hard to select and navigate as well. Surprising because I use all the adventure project apps and the data is better and they are easier to use. Also owned by OnX.

It's OK. The App is difficult to navigate and map zoom features are often jumpy and makes it harder to use. The snow icons don't respond to taps unless you zoom way in on the icon and sometimes it jumps to a completely different location in the app. Once I am able to open the info panel, it'd be great to see a forecast for the area. A map to or directions to feature would be good to add when selecting an area of the map.

Mapping and tracking system is the same great but still could use some improvement. Overall I like the app. I have been using onX hunt for a few years and love it so I decided to give onX backcountry a try. While using the app in the field it’s easy to use and very reliable. With that said there are a few improvements I’d like to see… I would like the search feature to have some filtering based on difficulty, length, etc as of now the search feature is a little frustrating at times. I can’t seem to access some of the same map layers that onX hunt has. Lastly I wish you were able to toggle on and off interaction between the onX hunt app and the onX backcountry app (at the very least sharing waypoints). All things considered though I’m still enjoying this app so far

A Must Have Tool.. All of my OnX apps are amazing and are an essential tool in my pack. There are updates often so they are always accurate. The tools like the offline maps work great and give you a piece of mind when you’re way out there on the trail. Tracker is great to log your activity. You can set up your hike before you go out to determine distance and elevation gains so that you can plan your hike before you get on the trail. I highly recommend.

A Gem. gof a mapping app for hikers and campers. Multiple other mapping apps out there charge the same (or more) yearly subscription for access to useless mapsb. and layers. Open up OnX Backcountry and BOOM- trails, state campsites, canoe runs, launches, parking areas, forest boundaries etc., etc., etc, are all already on your screen without having to slap on useless layers hu or download other digital maps. Truly fantastic app and great support team. Not only is the app full of super useful features. Its user interface is clean, responsive, and very well organized. To top it off ONX support is top notch. If you’re a subscriber, and you’re stuck or have questions there is an easy way to get in touch with the support team; you get to speak to a real person who can walk you through your issues/questions. Finally it’s super reasonably priced. What’s not to love.

Great app but needs Watch Integration Badly!!!. I’ve been using app for about a year now and love all its features. Works amazingly well great user experience. I just wish it had the ability to work with the Apple Watch Ultra 2. It would greatly enhance its functionality. I think it’s a huge missed opportunity to be able to plan a route then have it available on the watch for hiking, backpacking, skiing you name it. Never fun stripping off the gloves to dig my phone out to make sure your one track. Please get it onto the watch it would make Onxbackcountry probably the best backcountry app by a long shot! Five stars for what it is but I’d give 9 stars for watch integration.

Don’t ever use if you don’t have cell service. This silly hiking app logs you out randomly and you can’t log back in without cell service which is nuts. Use AllTrails unless you want to get lost in the woods if you rely on this app. Plus it is constantly throwing menus up when all you want to do is check the map but no, it needs to give you options you don’t need when you just want to check where you are. I can’t believe they made this app so you can’t see your downloaded maps if you don’t have cell service so you can’t login to use the features that keep you from getting lost in the woods. Just got lost because of this app. I’m actually writing this review (my first review I’ve ever we in my life) in a spot that has cell service as I just used AllTrails to find my way back to where I should be because this app may look great but in the field if you can’t use it without cell service it’s completely useless. Make sure you have other map apps when this one logs you out and won’t let you use your downloaded maps. Too much time spent on making it look good instead of making it work. I’m going to play with it for a few more days but it’s already gotten me lost on the first day I used it so it doesn’t look like I will be using it much longer.

Offline climbing content. For context, I haven’t purchased a membership. Since mountain project was merged with this app, it seems great to use as a climbing guidebook as long as you have service, but when I lose service I can’t access the content/pictures of any climb (on downloaded maps) which is the most necessary information besides the location. Does this change with a membership or will I still not be able to access pictures and descriptions offline?

Kinda brutal to use. I don’t seem to be finding much when trying to finding lines with this service. When switching from trail to snow mode and then selecting my activity, backcountry trail maps only show up sometimes. Plus, there’s a very limited amount of trails actually there. I’ve found better luck using Powder Project’s website when trying to find skin-tracks. Not a bad app, just very difficult to use snow mode. If there could be a wider selection of trails for backcountry skiers would be a great app. And a mode to hide all the hiking trails. Don’t really need them when everything’s covered in snow and I’m trying to find skin-tracks.

This tool is invaluable.. The offline maps and tracking tools are something that can’t be replaced if you spend a lot of time in the backcountry. From my experience the tracking works flawlessly and allows me to keep my location in unfamiliar locations. I feel a lot safer in the woods with OnX. I use it a lot for foraging and getting deep into areas off any trails. As long as my phone is charged I can count on OnX.

Great app, replaces my use of other apps. I have tried several apps for backcountry exploring- Gaia, Avenza etc, this is the handiest so far as it has excellent base maps with property boundaries! Living out west in a rural areas it’s crucial to know what is public and what is private. It’s the sole reason I bought this. Offline maps work great, the different sport options are fun (have only used snow shoeing so far) and the tracking and waypoint creation is easy. Only down side is it drains phone battery fast, but so do the equivalent apps. Always need to bring a back up. OnX was the go to for hunters I know and I love that there is an app for non-hunters as well.

Awesome!. Such a good app! Has so many tools and a really easy to use interface. My only critique is that it lacks the ability to give slope angle statistics for backcountry skiing and avalanche evaluation like CalTopo does on a track that you’ve made. The slope angle shading is also inaccurate and I’ve heard that that’s a bug and they’re working on it. I would imagine that by next ski season they will have developed this feature though! I think pretty soon this will be the ultimate do it all backcountry app.

Exceptional Trail App and 4WD Trail App. I used this app for the first time in the Sierras. We four-wheel drove about 25 miles in and camped. The next day we hiked on a trail and then off trail to thunder and lightning lake. The app was very helpful and useful in getting us back and finding the trail. Half of our hike was off trail, so being able to follow, my steps was very helpful. It even worked when I turn the phone off because my battery was low. When I turn the phone back on again, the App was still tracking me, which was quite impressive.

Great app. This is a full featured app with a terrific UI. I believe it is the best app for backcountry adventures compared to the other two apps I have used; Maps 3D Pro and Gaia. I do wish they would just combine all the features of their backcountry, hunting and off-road apps into one app and offer a subscription for it. Their UI filters allow you to add or subtract information as needed dependent on your activity so as to keep overlay clutter to minimum. I’m guessing that maximizing revenue streams keeps them from putting out the one complete outdoor adventure app.

Best app out there. User friendly, loads of info, and all around a great tool for any sort of backcountry. I’m a ski patroller, wildland firefighter, and volunteer county search and rescue. I use onx religiously for backcountry rescues, planning uphill and downhill ski routes, marking important locations while fighting fires, and even finding fun hikes with the girlfriend. 10/10 would recommend onx to anyone needing a great easy to use all around backcountry tool.

Solid Foundation, Some Details Need Improvement. This winter I started using the paid version of onX Backcountry for backcountry skiing in Northern Colorado. I’m a competent user of Gaia Pro an Cal Topo, but the addition of the Beacon Guidebooks database was a plus in onX Backcountry. The map layers are solid, and given that you can select from several useful layer plus 2D and 3D is a plus. The buttons for tracking, waypoint marking, and folders are easy to find. The customer service is solid, the two bugs I reported were addressed promptly this last six months. The “Master Class” zoom presentations are great and I sign up for most of them. One minor tweak I’d like to see: The tracking feature doesn’t offer details such as “moving speed”, “stopped time”, “max speed”, etc. There is only a field that says “speed”, which, of course, begs the question. “What does this value actually mean?”. Gaia offers all those other fields which give a substantially fuller picture. Otherwise I’m pretty happy with onX and will continue to use it and figure out how to maximize the features.

Not quite there yet (it’s a good map). This has the potential to be Apple Maps for the backcountry but it lacks smooth operation with the routing tools. The software just feels clunky. The snap feature is tough to use when trails intersect or there are alternate routes. A 60 mile backpacking trip should be start, finish, designate the routes, and set waypoints. This requires too much playing with to insure the track is just right, which is more obvious the longer the trip. The idea of this is great with the community input and finding local trails but it’s not ELITE yet

I am a huge fan!. This app rocks! I used it everyday on my 9 day canoe wilderness trip to the BWCA in Northern MN. With no cell service, the offline maps gave me everything I needed. While the other boat used a paper map and had to figure out where they were, I had a more detailed map that showed me where I was and where I needed to go. The waypoint and trail making feature was sweet as well. Highly recommend for anyone venturing outdoors.

Best Navigation App!!!. I purchased other nav apps before, and a few were decent, but there wasn’t one that pulled together all the features I love like this one! But the best part of onX Backcountry is the customer service. A couple weeks ago my iPhone battery was dying. The Apple store swapped it out. I backed up my phone, but, of course, none of the passwords back up. I was locked out of my accounts. I went to reset my password but my linked email account was locked and I couldn’t get in. I sent a help request to the onX Backcountry help desk and it was only minutes before they responded, changed my email to my back up account, and sent me a temp password. Start to finish…only a few minutes and I was rucking on! There are no other companies I deal with that have a response time like that! None! The sense of urgency is understood! If you’re debating purchasing this app, hesitate no more! Awesome features, emails with hints and tips to get max usage, and a top-notch help desk if anything goes wrong! Average app; little unique features. This app is not worth the annual price tag. Maybe, if it were a one time fee. I purchased this app to explore ski tour routes, and I was hoping it would be unique in mapping clear winter time access locations, with popular touring destination routes. Instead, this map is an average topo/satellite map, with a few hard-to-decipher routes thrown here and there. Very limited. Will not purchase in a following year (I can do way more with a combo of free Gaia and CalTopo).

great app! i’d like to offer some constructive criticism. Really liking features and function. My critique has to do with the user interface. it wastes a lot of space. font on the route name is too big, i want to be able to choose how large the elevation profile is. i find that the info panel on ipad has a large blank white dead space which could be used to see the map better, same with the iphone app, maybe more options for screen layout, shrink the font size… anything that helps the ios app have a more efficient use of the screen. Other than these user interface things, it works fantastic.

Inaccurate/outdated information. Just last week I had completed the Cascade-Paintbrush Canyon loop in the Grand Teton NP. I decided to look at my path using this app and was sorely disappointed to find at least two pieces of false information on that trail alone. The app lists a “Buffalo Bill” campsite just down the trail from the North Cascade camp zone; this is simply not true, and the park strongly discourages camping outside of the zones. A “Buffalo Bill” camp does exist, but it is a BSA camp North outside of the park. Further down, at the Holly Lake campsite, the app shows a food storage container that does not exist. In fact, this is not a very well developed campsite site and the park requires all visitors to bring their own bear cans. After finding these two extremely crucial pieces of misinformation on one trail alone, I can firmly attest that this app is not reliable. These two instances can really ruin a backpacking experience and potentially even put someone in real danger. Update your maps!

Best App, But Needs More Development.. Love this app for setting waypoints and making my own hike I can enjoy. In California, knowing property boundaries are as important as the hike itself. There needs to be more preset hikes or the app needs to be more intuitive so that searching for hikes when not on my home area is not cumbersome. Overall, this app can and I think will be better than other hiking apps out there. If it expands its preset hikes on the app and makes it easier to find a more diverse array of hikes, then it will be the best app offered!

Helpful Tool. This is a great tool that I use extensively both for planning and while on the trail. Specifically, the 3D view helps me plan potential camping sites. I also use it to plan waypoints like water stops, actual bathrooms, tree line, etc. Then, while on trail, I can see how close I’m getting based on the route that I’ve planned. I definitely recommend this tool to aid your backcountry adventures.

Help please?. Onx icon whited out yesterday and I’ve been unable to open the app 2 days. I went to appstore to ck for update and there is an update and my iPhone software version (iphone 6) is incompatible. I checked my phone for updates, it’s up to date; ckd apple website and ios 13 is not available for my phone. I need a link to download the version onx i just had before update please. I love this mapping software. It’s best for trails hands down!! Please help. Star rating based on the app just abruptly quitting without me updating or anything and icon turning white.

Cluttered and clunky maps. Way too many layers on the map with no intuitive, easy way to turn off the layers. If there is a way to turn off the layers, I haven’t found it. I don’t need to see bulky, thick blue lines all over the map, and trails with multi colored lines overlaid on them. And if you tap for a waypoint, but decide you don’t want it or need to move it, it appears you have to save it first and then delete it. You should be able to just it cancel or ‘X’ out of it. This app is trying to put way too many features into one experience. Too clunky and map is so littered with overlay debris that it’s pretty much useless as a… map.

Shows promise, but not currently viable for me. This app is easier to use and much more intuitive than Gaia, and the map design is way better, but the lack of critical route building tools means it isn’t viable for me. There are a ton of apps that let me click on a trail and get the distance and elevation change. If I’m going to pay for a GPS app I’ll need route building functionality that works with real trail vectors—not just point-and-click lines. I’ll check back in next year but the current offering isn’t enough.

Great app for hiking!. Great app for finding local trails for hiking, including a *really slick* 3D map view that shows elevation by overlaying the map image on a 3D frame. The “land types” help you see public vs. restricted access areas and the weather feature assists with both planning and current conditions. I can’t wait until they expand it a bit for trail running and MTB.

Pay to play. Just another cash grab.. I downloaded the app because I thought it would be handy to have if I need a way to navigate without an internet connection per the way this app was advertised. Soon as I open it I need to create a login account and start a “free trial” to even get past the home page. Needless to say, in an economic, social, and environmental climate like what we have today, the last thing I need is someone asking to pay for a subscription to an app that’s supposed to be useful but requires someone to pony up a monthly fee just to use it. Not worth my time OR my hard earned money. 0/5 stars.

Offline maps missing route information. It seems like the more I use this app the more I realize how elementary and underdeveloped it is. You can only download “Maps” for offline mode and not “Routes”. Your custom routes will show up in your map, however, they do NOT include IMPORTANT DETAILS such as elevation and distance while in offline mode. Why in the world wouldn’t you be able to download route information to use in offline mode? Also why can’t I add maps to a folder? I want to be able group maps with routes and waypoints into one trip folder. It seems like the people who developed this app don’t actually use it.

Never Get Lost Again. I don’t need to go into all of the details of this app. There is a slight but easy learning curve to get to know it thoroughly. Never get lost, always know where you are, peace of mind. This is excellent app for on your feet trekking, on and off trail especially in remote places. It’s not just great for backcountry, it’s also excellent for urban and rural areas as well. Basically anywhere in the Continental United States. As long as you have battery power, you you have a pretty darn good idea where you are with this and what’s near you. Park in a big parking lot at some huge concert? Mark your location and go right back to your car. I love its use for everything.

Love it. First time we went to a national park we didn’t realize the lack of service in and around the surrounding areas. Physical maps weren’t the greatest, so when I saw an ad for this app, I decided to give it a try. Best experience. I downloaded the maps for all the parks we were going to and had an amazing experience exploring and navigating through different hikes as well.

Love On X! One problem though…. I have been using On X for a couple years now - mostly the “Hunt” version of the app. Very simple to use and helpful in the outdoors. I primarily would use Hunt all year long, across all of my outdoor activities. This winter, as my On X Hunt subscription was expiring, I decided to switch over to Backcountry. I liked the idea of more winter-specific features like slope-aspect and avalanche forecast. It is very smooth and similar to Hunt, and I like it. However, I have one major complaint - data does not transfer from Hunt to Backcountry at all. This means any waypoints or tracks in one app does not apply to the other. For me, that stinks! During the summer months, I may use Hunt to mark a place that would be awesome to ski in the winter. I might track a certain route to a summit in the summer that might prove useful in the winter. Yet, I have no record of that in the Backcountry version. Plus, there are some features in Hunt that simply are not there in Backcountry, such as certain map layers or filters. Then again, Backcountry has other features that I wish were in Hunt. I love On X, but if you want one for all year and all activities, get Hunt and don’t switch from app to app. Keep it simple.

Severely Limited App. Updated review. On second day using app, the server that controls login crashed and couldn’t use the app. I’ve been trying to plan some hikes and this app just has nothing on the alternatives. You can’t navigate between waypoints. Unless a user has uploaded a gps track, the “trails” on the map are pulled from a general USGS database and lack topo and difficulty. Because it’s a new service there are not a lot of reviewed trails. I am going back to my other apps. This one is not ready for prime time. Initial Review. Just got the app. I also use Trailforks, MTB review, and Gaia (all paid versions). This app is geared toward hiking only. It lacks trail reviews, trail photos, and any other intel that I find helpful in planning an adventure. Great to see that a trail is in the Gunnison NF, or that the Gunnison nF is 1,000,000 acres but I ask you, how does that assist me planning a hike? It does not. Clicking on a trail marks that spot on the trail and highlights the trail. It’s a bit of an awkward functionality. Again show me trail reviews, trail conditions, user photos. Also what’s the point of an app that only shows information for a single use - hiking? All the other apps I use are multi use. So far disappointed.

Not the one for me. I used this app for multiple backcountry trips as well as day hikes this summer. The offline maps work well. However this app lacks basic features like the ability to quickly estimate distances on the trail you are on, or display a elevation profile. These features are available on the free Hiking project app which this is replacing. I also had repeated issues with the app crashing. I will not be renewing my subscription.

Great and always improving!. I’ve been using it for a year now and it’s really been a great experience. I’ve used a plethora of similar apps for hiking, and this one has a very intuitive interface and has been easy to use for planning as well as recording in the field. I also appreciate that they continue to improve and innovate, not allowing it to become stagnant. I’ve also reached out to their customer service for a couple of issues, and they’ve been very responsive and providing a satisfactory result.

Missing key feature.... I got this app hoping it’d help provide extra support for hiking trails, but have found it severely lacking in one feature that I think is very odd...trail segment distances. It tells you how long the whole trail is, but does not have distances on segments of the trail. I find this odd because I also have a subscription to OnX Hunt Maps, and for the trails that are on there, this feature exists. I paid for a year on this app, but I’m not sure there is any added benefit for it over simply keeping the hunt maps subscription. Hope that changes with updates, as I really want to like this and find usefulness for our hiking, camping and hunting excursions...

Nice app. Got this app as my friends all have it and I wanted to be able to have maps available and track my hikes. So far it seems easy to use and navigate. The tutorial videos available are easy to follow and just the right length. I was able to use the app no problem after watching them. Had to contact customer service about a minor issue and got a prompt reply and answer the next day. Very responsive I feel and they seemed concerned about my issue. Recommend this app to anyone who wants to enjoy their outside activities more. Look forward to using it during ski season too.

Serviceable app. I typically used AllTrails, but onX offers better options for planning out trips on waterways. Worked excellently for pre-planning my summer kayak trips. Although the automatic follow route option when drawing out your own route doesn’t work, so it is more tedious because you must place the points very close for it to follow your desired water route. No big deal though. Still grateful to have this app as another pivotal exploration tool at my disposal.

Love love love this app!. We live in Lolo MT and I’m out hiking with the dogs all the time in the Bitterroot and greater Missoula area. The “elite” version is totally affordable, the maps are super detailed, the features are great (including tracking your hikes) and the accuracy is spot on. You want to do a hike, yup they’ve got it in there including the trailhead as well as the route. Plus their HQ is right here in Missoula! One note - if you want to know the TOTAL elevation change, add the “up” and the “down”. I just did a hike where they both showed at about 750 and indeed my total was about 1500.

This app saved my toes!. Tried this out when backpacking Big Bend for the first time. Ended up getting snowed into a mountaintop campsite with a historic amount of snow. This app gave us the confidence we were going the right way to return to the base when we couldn’t see any trail or tracks at all and needed to get down in time to prevent frostbite. The tracking works remarkably well and the UI is fairly intuitive. Also seeing the difficulty gradient along the trails is very useful for planning and decision making. My only suggestion would be to make it easier to access and view stats on previously tracked hikes. The only way I could find to access them was by tapping on the path on the map, but sometimes I had hiked the same segment many times making this an imprecise way to find precious data.

Find the way. I got this app to help me find new hiking trails, but it offers sooo much more than what I was initially looking for. It has been a great aid to hiking! I’ve had to suspend my adventuring for a short time and so I’ve temporarily dropped my membership. OnX makes that very easy. But as soon as I’m able to hit the trail again the first thing I’ll do is re-subscribe.

Helped keep me on track. Recently did the Lost Coast Trail in Northern California. I used On X Backcountry as my main mapping guide. It was flawless. I was able to pause my trip during breaks and even if I closed the app down, it held my place and prompted me to restart the navigation. Was afraid it was going to be difficult to use, but it was pretty straightforward.

Love this app. It works great for me. I love the option to use it on my desktop which makes it easy for me to find new places to explore. It’s a great app for the price. I’m not sure how they do it but I was so happy with the telephone help and support I got from LANCE. An actual human that speaks English. I felt like I was talking with a friend I just can’t express how important customer service is and they have it.

Not useful in Canada yet. Currently trails aren’t supported and the maps don’t support metric. Basic over site but it makes the app unusable.

No Canadian content. Pretty useless, not even topo data.

Useless in Canada. No idea why this app is even available in Canadian app store. Not a single trail. No topo maps. Oh and temp on main map is always in F even after changing settings to metric.

The best yet!. The most interactive, featured, and comprehensible maps I’ve found yet. With so many navigation and mapping apps, this is the best yet!

Nothing available on the trial version. It’s hard to know if the app would be useful. There is nothing local. Only list trails 200 miles away.

Very useful, hiking and climbing up. I found the features to be very good on this app. The only drawback is that it relies a lot on user feedback, which of course depends on the quality of the user feedback that is getting.

Garbage. Why is this even available in Canada. Not one trail is available it’s a complete waste of time. And only 7 days free then you have to pay. It’s junk

7 days trial. Why do all the apps wants yo to subscribe?

Horrible. Nothing for Canada. Even in the states, if you leave the app open but lock your phone, when opening your phone it goes back to the home screen and makes you find that trail again. No live tracking. I'll stick with guthook thanks.

Has potential. Seems like a great app since its design and usability is very simple. However, there aren’t any Canadian trails available on this app, so don’t install it if you are expecting that you’ll get local trails in Canada. This app shouldn’t even be on the Canadian AppStore but for some reason it is? Still, great potential but lacks practicality in Canada and in some parts of the USA too.

App won’t show metric units. Despite toggling to metric as the preferred unit, the app will not update the maps and stays in imperial. Is it possible to get an update that fixes this?

Prompt reply by knowledgeable staff. When my backcountry app wouldn’t load I reached out to customer service and they replied the following morning (I made the query on a Sunday) and were both helpful and knowledgeable when I had further questions about future app development.

Get lost. Well, better to not get lost. I’m not an apps in the field type person, I prefer an actual map and a compass but there are advantages that come with technology. The one that I really like with this app is the 3D. It’s a very useful feature especially when from a mental standpoint.

Great app. I use this app religiously for my back country hiking, snowboarding, and hunting the trails are the most updated between all the maps, only thing I wish we had was easy connection to backcountry rescue devices such as the garmin inreach and others like it. Absolutely fantastic app for keeping me on trail in deep backcountry of Alaska

Great features. After years of using Fat Map and the Strava unpleasantness, I switched to OnX. The transition was easy, and in just a few minutes I was able to import all of my tracks. I’m quite impressed with the features and usability. This ski season should be awesome, thanks OnX!

The future of online mapping. Though this product is fairly new, it is already showing its promise to be the leading online mapping site which is guaranteed to help you get into and out of places you previously didn’t even know were there.

Won’t open!. Just a blue screen with app name. Deleted and reinstalled multiple times and still locked screen on opening. Please fix! Initially I gave 1 star because of a bug, but it has been fixed by the developer who sent me a message. It’s back up and running on iOS! Great app!

Great product. All the functionality and insights are amazing. Offline mode. Route tracking. Slope angle. So much more. Makes me feel more prepared and safer for when I go into the backcountry. Just wish they had more trails built into their system. Overall very satisfied for the price.

Missing Key Feature. I truly wanted to use this app as my main mapping / GPS app for all things in the mountains, but the app doesn’t offer 3D maps mode for downloaded offline maps. If 3D maps aren’t available for when you’re actually out in the backcountry using the app, why use it instead of other competitor’s similar apps that do allow 3D offline downloaded maps?

OnX backcountry. Incredible app that allows me to explore with more information at my fingertips . Weather and offline maps assist me with planning safely and insuring our adventures go as planned. Tracking allows me to revisit our favorite hikes and to show others some of our amazing finds outdoors.

Directions to Trail Head. This app is already far better than any of the other trail apps! Unless I’m missing something, the only thing that seems to be missing is the ability to get directions (or link to Maps/Google Maps) to the trailhead from your current location.

Offline doesn’t work. I downloaded this mostly for climbing. Despite downloading the maps for offline use, none of the climbs have any detail unless you have cell service, unless I am doing something wrong. You can see the. Ames of the climbs on the map, but you don’t know the rating or type of climb while offline. Aside from that, the app works great, but many climbing areas don’t have cell service.

The watch. Love this app but have been waiting years now for this app to work with my watch. Glad to see a version was released for the hunt app. When will any of the other apps get this. I prefer this app but find I have to use other navigation apps for watch to work. I definitely won’t buy again if there isn’t a watch version.

Not great so far. You see all of these features on the previews for the app and then you’re down on the app and there is zero directions. It is the most user unfriendly navigation app I’ve ever used. how do you download Maps? How do you access all of these great resources on national parks there’s nothing and when I go online I can’t find anything on the website either.

Offline map functionality. Before a trip and have no access to offline maps. Tons of attempts at getting it to work. Restarting phone, uninstalling software, deleting all previous offline maps, etc etc. Have been back and forth with customer support, now I’m heading out for four days with no cell service and no offline maps. I’ve used Onx for hunting but have to look elsewhere for hiking and backpacking. So deeply disappointed in them.

Issue resolved. I had an issue with using some features of the app after a renewal. A 5 minute call to the help desk number resolved iit quickly and painlessly. I use this app nearly every weekend so it was sort of a big deal for me. No fuss, no problem to get it fixed. Very pleased with the app and the support provided.

Needs work for use but reliable. Really miss some of the hunting features in the hunt app vs the backcountry version. I’m not willing to maintain two version of software that nearly do the same thing. If the apps shared data such as offline maps, markups etc. it would be a good system. Needs more a lot more markup icons in the backcountry app.

Takes away the stress. This is a great app. I love that you can download maps and use them off-line. It really takes away the stress from getting lost. I had my kids with me and I download it on their phone as well.

Peace of mind. I find the navigation and mapping use to be quite beneficial when off track. I have checked the app and gotten back on track easily. Very worthwhile. I gave it four stars because I am still struggling making my offline maps. Learning curve.

The best app I’ve found so far. Seriously, this is the most intuitive hiking/outdoors app I’ve found (and I’ve tried them all). All the information you need to plan a hike or long trail run is there, and the offline maps are actually reliable! Can’t wait to see what OnX has in store for the future.

Love the app. I love the app! I’m so glad OnX has branched out from just the hunting app. I’m looking forward to more features being added to the app over time. I also really like the way the app navigation works - bit of a deviation from standard iOS tab navigation, but I think keeping the map always in view was such a good call. It would be nice to be able to add/show remove/hide layers. Maybe that’s coming down the pipeline. Also - is an On X van life app coming soon?! Hahaha jk, that would be nice though. Good work team - from a fellow iOS dev :)

Best one yet. I like all the features. I use the App for animal tracking and gives me a good map on my iPad while I’m in the field, as well as my position. I can measure distances, like from where a deer kill was found to where a mountain lion left scat. It helps put the big picture of animal behavior in perspective.

A life saver!!. Trekking in the Adirondacks was no easy task by far but this app definitely delivered and was extremely useful when paper maps couldn’t show exact location and updates off trail camp sites

Cool app, great service. As a backcountry skier, I’ve used other apps, really like the way they have integrated the guidebooks and info. My subscription went through and then I saw they offered the $5 deal for the year, Lance with support helped me navigate how to get the deal.

Best Map Resource for the Backcountry Fanatic. I have tried using almost every app out there that provides a map resource, and always find myself coming back to OnX. It is by far the most reliable and user friendly system.

Best way to waste time. I love maps. I usually use Gaia, but the 3D feature on onX is incredible. It’s so easy to get sucked into exploring the wild with the 3D map feature. It’s not just mesmerizing, but it’s really handy when trip planning. OnX is now part of my routine for trip planning.

Onx is superior in all apps. I’ve have and use onx hunt and off-road multiple times throughout the year and they’re exceptional! And I’m excited to see how much this has to offer for more trails for my backpacking in the summer in the off-season.

Excellent App!. OnX Backcountry is a great app, as is their other apps; OnX Offroad and OnX Hunt. No other apps offer the extremely useful functionality and information that OnX apps do for your specific purpose. Once you use one, you’ll find yourself wanting the others!

For a MT based company, the trails are not up to date. I’ve used onX Hunt for years and was able to get all the info I needed. Got into mountain biking and switched over to backcountry and wow….are there a lot of trails missing from this app. I’m up around Kalispell, not sure if that matters but these trails have been around for 3-5 years and are not on the app or only show a few on the app. Accurate pathing, but any other trail map’s free version blows this out of the water. Guess there’s just more focus on hunting then other outdoor rec.

Great value, wish it had more MTB trails. This is a great app for downloading offline maps and building your own routes. I've also found that somehow it's much better than other apps at identifying my location on trails, which helps navigation a lot. I wish they had more MTB trails and also differentiated which ones were just dirt roads/fire trails.

Not There Yet. For an app that takes payment, it lakes polish. A lot of features are still unavailable, and for some reason descriptions get cut off and can’t be fully read (no amoubt of tapping expands it). Ski reports rely on users and currently there appear to be few as no reports can be found anywhere in the Front Range. Needs supports and work asap to justify cost otherwise might as well just use Caltopo

Best tool for Outdoor enthusiasts!!. Whether you are planning a snow show adventure, looking for local hot springs, or renting a lookout tower for a night, this app will not only lead you in the right direction, but it will tell what weather to expect and show you all the details you might need to start your adventure. I highly recommend it!

Challenging to use. I found this to be challenging to use. The images and advertisement look great, but I don’t have a ton of the trails in my area that are on this app. This doesn’t really give me anything that my old version of Gaia doesn’t. I got it on sale for $10. It’s extremely limited in its use (only to hiking trails). Doesn’t seem useful for hunting or 4-wheeling. They have different apps that cater to those for additional money. Maybe it’s what you’re looking for, but it’s not for me. I won’t be renewing.

Feature request. Love this app but PLEASE be the first app out there to add in a horseback riding filter to your activity selection. The COTREX app has this and I use it all the time when in Colorado, but nothing available outside of that state. It would be amazing to quickly know what trails allow horses and which don’t.

Elevation data missing. New premium subscriber… all my local trails - public and government, including one National Park, are missing all elevation data from the trail maps. Contour maps yes, but the trail data just says 0 feet elevation change for all the routes. (This is not while tracking, only when viewing maps and planning trips ahead of time.)

Needs a few more things. This app could be great if it had just a couple more things: 1) Full fledged iPad app 2) More trails highlighted (apps like alltrails, and Gaia have tons of trails this app is missing) You can find the trail, but only if you know about it or find it on another app first. 3) Either give national parks, BLM, national forest maps as an overlay or build it in better

Seems great!. Lots of features to get used to but I love the route mapping feature, the 3D maps, the offline function which gives you a 5mi, 10mi, or 150mi radius of backcountry instead of just one trail. Using for the first time this weekend

Please add private land layer to backcountry. Hey OnX developers - please offer the private lands layer that is available in OnX hunt in OnX backcountry as well! Hikers often walk off trail, and we need to know whose land we are on just as much as hunters do. It’s annoying having to toggle between the two apps to get the layers I need- the trail maps layer and the private lands info.

Hands-Down the Best App for Hiking. I’m an avid hiker who likes to explore off-trail in national forests. I’ve tried about every hiking app out there and was so grateful to finally find OnX Backcountry. I love planning trips using the web interface and then syncing to my app and using offline maps when I’m out of service range. Keep up the great work!

Useless for skiing. OnX seems to have a great marketing team, with ads being shown on every major ski site and a bunch of sponsored athletes. Unfortunately the app doesn't live up to the hype. There is very limited winter satellite imagery and the suggested routes are all easily found on the internet already. It seems like the app is just a port of their OnX Hunt and Offroad apps, making it a worse option than outdoor specific apps like Fatmap, Caltopo, or All trails.

Great so far. Just downloaded and haven’t tried it offline yet but will soon. Also, seems a little confusing at first. My advice is mark a waypoint so you don’t lose your spot and use files to your advantage

Everything you want to know. Love this app. It has all the info I’m looking for to plan the things I want to do. So worth it. Just downloaded this after being a loyal lover of onX hunt for years (I’m actually not a hunter, but use the app more than any other app I have). Just get it. You’ll love it.

Meh. Provides nearly zero info beyond a standard (free) topo map. Had zero expectations going in, which were met in kind upon attempting to learn anything useful from the app. Absolutely zero functionality or usefulness for their target demographic of backcountry skiers/boarders so I’m not entirely sure what the purpose of this app is aside from a money grab. The most prominent feature are the reports from Cody’s Fifty project, which is a marketing gimmick above all else. Will avoid the OnX apps if this is really all they have to offer.

Great for beginners. I am new to hiking/backpacking and this app is everything I need from finding the perfect trail to tracking myself and downloading offline maps. The 3D map functionality is great too but I haven’t really needed it yet. Yet.

Intuitive and easy interface. I really appreciate so far how easy the app is to use. I have used other applications that were much more complex and I really appreciate that onX has full features while being very easy to navigate with.

Great idea, poor execution. Has all the trails you could ever dream of… in popular areas. Missing EVERY SINGLE hiking trail I’ve been on in Wyoming. And probably thousands more. It’s my understanding that this is a community driven app so trails don’t show up unless someone has hiked it using the app. I could be wrong but I’ve heard this from several people. Not really my cup of tea. I already pay for onX off-road and I can’t justify paying for this too.

Much Needed Tool. This app has become my go to adventure planner. Works great for trail running and gravel biking! I especially enjoy the confidence of knowing private land boundaries, and have offline maps is comforting when doing solo adventures. Planning on being a subscriber for years to come!

It has most trails. Ever done a hike and didn’t have a map of the trail? Or the only one was an old one at the start of the trail behind an old scratched up piece of plexiglass? Well this app will likely have the trail you are on and more, and best of all, it tacks you with gps. It’s worth the free trial! Check it out!

Invaluable to the adventurer. I am still figuring out how to access all the details available on this essential app. I just downloaded a map of one of my favorite hiking areas where I often loose reception. Can’t wait to try it out tomorrow in the Ventana Wilderness near Fort Hunter Liggett, CA.

Customer service!. Not used to having a human answer the phone with a tech question. Not only answered with a short wait, but helped me solve my issue quickly! I’ve been a seldom user, but now I’ve had a jump start.

So helpful!. I just got back from a coastal backpacking trip. I used OnX for the first time. It was extremely helpful. I could see where I was able to get water throughout my 3 day trip. And it was consistent with tracking me, even offline. Thank you! I love maps!
