The San Diego Union-Tribune Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

Terrible app. Don’t pay for it!. This is a terrible app with bare bones stories and the same content several days running. I tried to cancel but it’s impossible to do so through the app itself. I called customer service and they are in the Philippines. They told me to “call the App Store” to cancel. Of course they did not have a phone number. I guess I’m stuck paying for this into eternity.

Worst Newspaper App. This is by far the worst newspaper app I’ve ever come across. And, their customer service is abysmal. Takes days, if, they care to respond to a contact email. And what’s even worse, they don’t care. If it weren’t for local business and sports I’d be gone.

Liked old app better. As prior reviewer notes, I to updated my Ipad and the old app that is an exact replica of the newspaper appears to no longer be available. Instead in this app you can go to the upper right hand menu and click eNewpaper which boots you over to Safari and downloads the newspaper into Safari. Thats ok if you have wifi but say your getting on a plane, the old app kept the entire newspaper available to read offline in newspaper format but Safari doesn't do that.

Continues to get worse. Every time they update this, the workability decreases. I have been a subscriber for over 30 years, and used the digital version as soon as it was introduced. But I finally gave up after their last “upgrade”. Not responsive, cumbersome, and when I called about the new issues, the rep really wasn’t very well informed about it. His best guess was to reboot it, and he had no idea how to deal with the issues. I cancelled my subscription, it just isn’t worth the high blood pressure trying to get it to work.

Freezes and crashes. I bought a subscription to the UT online and can’t get the app to work. When I click on a story, the app freezes for about 15-20 seconds and then crashes. Every story is like this. I sent the developer an email yesterday and have had no response. Frustrating!!!!

Very bad app. I can usually read the paper if I click on the email version they send, but if I try to use the app it freezes so I can’t switch pages. The old app was great as it downloaded allowing me to read anytime without an internet connection. I can’t understand why the paper took a perfectly good app and made it so!!!! Bad. Just bring back the old app or get someone that fix the current one. Definitely allow downloading to read offline.

Problems with this App. This new App is awkward and inefficient. It kicks you out randomly saying you need to log in or become a subscriber. When I go the settings, I am logged in. Finally have to delete and reinstall it. The pages don’t move freely with swiping. Often have to go backwards then forwards then backwards to make the current page scroll down. Really bad.

App not delivering the ePaper!. Sometimes it works and sometime it does not work. Tried rebooting the iPad, tried deleting the App. Still not getting this Sunday ePaper. Time to complain. Glitchy App. Needs attention. Paying for the service, not getting what I paid for. Needs a better geek squad.

Needs a LOT of improvements!!!. Hangs up all the time. Needs to re-download all the time. Can’t read all the comics. Try to scroll in epaper view and it continually reloads the article when you don’t want it to. Summary: worst app we have ever experienced.

San Diego Union Tribune. I really liked the old format better than the new version. If I cannot get the old version back, I will drop the paper.

Very annoying app. There are a couple of things that are very annoying: 1) I often don’t finish reading the paper until the next day. But instead of being able to pick up where I left off, the app opens to the front page of the current day’s paper 2) I like to read the paper like a normal paper - I don’t want to open the whole article and see only that one article. But the app is so sensitive to touch that it constantly does this. It should require a double tap to do this.

Horrible Digital Subscription. You get what you pay for. I thought I was getting a very good digital subscription offer and it didn’t deliver. I constantly had login issues. My login issues got so bad to where I was having to reset my credentials twice a day. I canceled and requested a refund. If I had the option give zero stars I would have assigned that rating!!!

Truly awful compared to the old app. Only money can account for replacing the splendid old app with this abomination. It no longer supports an in-app version of the printed newspaper with all the old features. For that, you now have to view the paper in a browser with brain dead features.

Terrible new version. This new version will not let me download the crossword puzzle and print it using my iPhone... The previous version worked perfectly why would you trying to screw it up?

Today’s paper is NOT available each morning! WHAT IS THE POINTTTT. We pay for an electronic verion and the delivered Sunday paper. The app just doesn’t load today’s paper. My app is up to date. This paper is already late on the real news. Why am I paying? There is no customer service contact in the app, on purpose. Duh.

Great idea poorly executed. The basic idea is great, but I cannot remember a day in the last year where there was not some kind of problem. Tapping on an article should open it in its own window. This is great because you can scale the font and makes it easier to read. If an article spans pages it all should show in this window. So, some articles will not open at all. Some open blank. Some open but do not include all the text (frequently stopping at the end of that “page”). Some are missing some or all of the pictures. The web version is generally less problematic, but often the same issues occur on the web version. Customer service is basically non responsive with the standard reboot your iPad and reload the app as a solution. This never works. I love the sports coverage, especially Kevin Acee on the Padres beat but I’d dump this app in a minute if there was an alternative.

Old version better. This new version feels like a big step backwards. The old version was much more user-friendly. Please bring it back!

HORRIBLE!!!! APP. As all others state, we have this app to read the paper, but we no longer can. Please make it simple - push a button and read the paper. The app is now useless and I will cancel if they do not change it.

This app DOES NOT work with apple family sharing like it’s supposed to!!!. This app is supposed to work with apple family sharing BUT IT DOESN'T. I just spent 2+ hours on the phone with apple tech support and they could not get it to work. They finally said I had to go back they the app developer! Bizarre since it worked fine for 5-6 weeks!!!

Joke!. I read the article on people protesting. No doubt exaggeration about the protesters not social distancing and wearing pro trump hats. We all know that we risk our lives if we wear any red baseball cap in California. Even if it’s a Arizona cardinals hat. As far as not social distancing check out my video on my Facebook page of when I went to shop at at mission valley Costco for the senior early hour! Beverly Boyce Graves

Wow, did you ask your customers? Terrible execution. Did the UT team test drive this with their loyal subscribers, did you understand the customer use cases of how they consume your daily paper? For those who travel for work, the best thing was to load the paper before heading out of home. Then I could read the UT without the need for a connection. Please fix this or should we ask for a refund to our long standing subscription.

Good SoCal news coverage. The best daily newspaper in San Diego and Imperial Counties with good coverage of northern Baja California and the border region . Great local sports coverage.

Makes my phone get hot. When using this app my phone gets hot and slows down. Please fix...

Works great!. I’ve had no issues and find it very useful for my iPad and iPhone

Bad app. Just about every other day I can’t open the articles to read them after downloading the days paper. One day it works, the next days paper does not. I’d give it zero stars but they won’t let me.

Bring Back the Old App. Like other reviewers I am frustrated because I can’t easily download the daily edition and read it later without an Internet connection. Also, please put back the feature where you can read an article which continues on another page by simply clicking the hyperlink which is the page number where the article is continued. This may be a short lived subscription for me.

What a mess. Bad app. Keep getting told my free subscription is up, even though I have an all digital subscription. And then the app does not let you reregister. With so many examples of quality newspaper apps out the, I can’t understand why the UT keeps getting this so wrong.

Online Version Great. Thankful for the online version of this newspaper. I have macular degeneration so reading the small newsprint was challenging. Now I can easily read the paper on my iPad and make the print larger by spreading my fingers. The added Los Angeles Calendar section is an added reward. The newspaper is still deliveredThursday thru Sunday. I would to have it stopped, and I have requested this several times to no avail.

Horrible Update. This is what happens when programmers think they’re smarter than everyone else. This new version is slow to load, hard to navigate and forget about trying to read it off-line. Needs a major fix

Buggy app, very poor tech support. The paper is great, but the app is very buggy. It’s a shame because when the app works it’s actually a great way to read the paper. Unfortunately it’s quite buggy (frozen interface, article clicks not responding as they should). Whenever I report an problem directly from the app it supplies all the technical detail tech support should need (platform, OS version, app version, etc). But every time, every single time, I get a generic response back (giving me nonsensical advice like “clear the cache and the cookies, try a different browser). I’m trying to be forgiving during this time when they probably aren’t fully staffed, but they clearly don’t care about fixing the app.

Terrible App: Bring Back the Old One. I do not want to read the paper in a web browser, which does not allow offline reading when not connected to WIFI. I do not want to have to convert the edition to a .pdf file and then store it in iBooks where the functionality then becomes extremely limited. The old app worked so well. Why was it changed? I am on a trial subscription now and may not continue, given the hassle it is to read the digital paper.

I like it. Easy to use. I actually like that it doesn’t automatically download the e-paper. Saves space, and downloading is quick and easy if desired. Really like the full paper view.

App works just fine. There’s no bugs on the latest version. And you can click on articles to bring them up into an easy read format. I think i might resubscribe...

Huge improvement. Love the new app - much needed and a huge improvement. Thank you!

newspaper freezes regularly on iPad and iPhone. Two calls in 3 days to customer service (long hold time) they recommended deleting app and reinstalling. That works until you start turning pages then it stops to say you don’t have a subscription and you have no where to click to prove that you do. Please make your app more reliable we want to read the on line newspaper daily.

No Read Aloud Option through Updated App. The only way to still have the read aloud option is to go to the website. This newer version does not allow that option. Dissapointed.

Recent eNewspaper (UT San Diego). I missed yesterday enewspaper on May 26, 2018 and I spent 30 min looking for it, but no luck! I miss the old eEdition as it was much friendly than the current eEdition! If it has not improved, I would call for the old fashion morning newspaper on my driveway again! (Poor trees!)

Article Toggle doesn’t always work. The eNewspaper section of the app has an article toggle that allows you to read the entire article without changing pages. It will stop working on today’s edition, but work on an archived edition or the next day’s edition. It’s doesn’t appear to be consistent as far as the day of the week.

No offline version. UT confirmed to me that they no longer support the Tecnavia App (the original one). Really annoying that they would stop supporting it WITHOUT informing their subscribers. Please support the original app. I can no longer download the paper to read offline when I am flying or somewhere without internet access. The download option in the e-newspaper does not fix this, it is buggy and often needs to reload which is impossible without internet connection.

No way to select North County edition of e-paper in the app. The North County Local Section (Section B) of the e-newspaper is NOT available via this app. This was confirmed by the customer service department of the San Diego Union Tribune. Why? Who knows. So, the only way to view the local edition is to use the webpage version and NOT this app. So, this app is useless to me.

So long old friend. I subscribe to this paper for over 35 years. I enjoyed drinking my coffee and reading it in the morning. Since new ownership the last year I cannot stomach to read it. You have destroyed this one’s great paper. It is now A pro Marxist, anti-American activist rag. I just canceled. I don’t need to pay for communist propaganda. If I could give it zero stars I would.

Unlimited digital is not unlimited. Spent over an hour on the phone with customer service attempting to link my iOS subscription to the web access. Articles I get via email or social media on my desktop should be readable with the unlimited subscription according to their marketing materials. They kept insisting it was apple’s responsibility since I subscribed through the app. I was also told to subscribe via the web not the app (which coincidentally is twice as expensive). Passing the buck. They were unable to figure it out but told me they would look into it. Will update my review if they resolve the problem.

Took a mediocre app and made it worse.. Amazing. A mediocre but usable app replaced by some deformed version from a programmer that obviously has no news app experience. I’d cancel but my wife likes local news even as she’s complains about how bad it is. Once I convince her of alternatives, Voice of San Diego, The Reader, etc, I hope to eliminate this abomination. Compared with my Washington Post app this is a disgraceful example of getting what you paid for and even if it was free they overpaid. Amateur day.

Works but not customizable. I upgraded my IPad and was greeted with this new app. Overall it works fine. But I want to read the paper not listed articles. The app show give the user the ability to customize to their preferences. Sadly this does not.

Works OK with a few exceptions. I like the app and it seems to work well. The exception is if I download a paper, and then try to read it the next day, the app gets confused and keeps trying to download and read today’s paper. This situation is exasperated when offline. I reported this issue and the support was ludicrous. They asked “what browser am I using” when I specifically said it’s about this app. Worthless support.

Frustrated. We have been subscribing to the U-T for over 60 years and have used the e version since it started. Everything went pretty well until recently. Now it takes forever to find a way to actually get the day’s paper. This needs to change NOW. B Martyn

Mix representative.. Worked OK however the developers were not consistent from day too day. Sometimes the print feature worked, sometimes not. Sometimes articles selected were collective, sometimes I had to search for the rest of the story. Sometimes a different article was interjected. Sometimes a specific article could not be selected. What I was not aware of, until reading the comments, that this “app” edition was in addition to the “on line” edition I am already paying for. I use to get home delivery, but they couldn’t do that well either. SDU bought out all the local papers, and it been unsatisfying since

New SD e-version. This version is terrible. There is no browse button, so I have to go through the whole paper to find what I want. There is no offline storage so I have to be on WiFi to read it. It loads slowly. I want the old version back!

Bring back old App. Old app quit working. Now stuck with “updated” version. Cannot download paper to be read later. Download takes forever and usually does not ever finish. Can’t get any more than the first 8 pages. What’s the point? More ads. Ironically driving the reader away.

Had this app. I cannot even log in now to read the paper before it hits me with a page to pay for a trial subscription of which I’ve had auto pay for a subscription for years! Was on the phone with a customer support rep (what a joke!) as she kept me doing the same thing over and over which didn’t work for 30 minutes before she hung up on me! UNSAT!

Can we have the old version ?. Can we get the full paper downloaded option back?

Pretty lame. Non-chronological abbreviated and flimsy articles with ads. Not great.

Very unstable app. Half the times, it does not open. Has a lot of issues. I am paying for a subscription and I cannot use it....

Buggy Mess. Locked up after a few articles. Fix this buggy mess.

Waste of money when abroad. No technology available to have access when out of country . In this day and age it’s ludicrous

No support for app. They took my money, but I couldn't log in. Couldn't find a way to contact them for support.

Not as good as the old app, many issues. Rollout of the new app was not well done. I sat down to read the newspaper on my iPad as I usually do to find that it no longer works and I had to call the newspaper to find out there was a new app and the old one doesn’t work anymore. 1 the good news At first first I didn’t care for the listing of headline articles when I first bring up the app. However, I tried it for a few days and now find it helpful ie another option to access the articles 2 article continuity In the middle of an article when it finishes on another page eg continues on A8, I can no longer touch A8 and go to that page. I like to do that because many times there are related articles on the page. Instead it takes me to a full text page which is helpful but I used to get that by simply touching the article if I wanted full text 3 where are previous editions I can’t find where I can see the covers of all editions and pick previous ones 4Navigation Navigation: I can’t pinch smaller on one page view; and if I go to the two page view it won’t let me decide which two adjacent pages I want; sometimes when I get to the end of a section it has a “previous” and “next” indicators, sometimes it doesn’t. When it does, it isn’t selectable but I can swipe. The indicators should be consistent and more informative like ‘swipe left’ for previous. 5 returning to where I left off When I go away from the app - go to another app - and then return, I want to be right back where I left off, like it used to do. You can go to Safari and it will be the first one providing you have not gone to another Safari page, but selecting the app seems to reload the paper 6 selecting ads to print or forward There was an ad that I wanted to email to my wife, when I pressed/touched it like I used to, it did not respond/highlight; I could not print or email it. I’m sure the UT’s advertisers would be very interested in this change in functionality

Worse app ever. The old version was far superior to this piece of crap. It doesn't give you today's paper.

Old app better. I agree !! Old app was soooo much better than this upgrade. Give us a choice between staying with the new one or going back to the old online version !!!

Old iPad app was better. What happened to the old ipad app? We saw each page, double clicked to read the article, could pinch to enlarge and go back. I did not want an upgrade and had I known, I would not have upgraded to a useless, substandard one. Please go back to the old iPad app. Otherwise, I will need to use my computer to read the paper.

Slow, late, boring. Same lead story for 3 days, minimal photos, little unique info. Get the AP app instead.

New version is awful. Since the “upgrade” in June, 2019 the e-paper viewed on my iPad is glitchy, sticky, and downright awful. The need to fire their web developer and start over. Don’t get this app.

Utterly useless. I use the UT app while traveling, and this new UT app is nothing like the print UT. Just a list of articles.

Works well but needs improvement. I used the prior app on my old iPad, and was very surprised to find a totally different app when I got my new iPad. At first, I thought it was terrible, but after using it for a few days I'm finding it to be better in many ways. Once I found how to get to the eNewspaper (touch the tiny lines on the top right side of the screen - not at all user-friendly or intuitive!), I was happy with the features available. The eNewpaper opens in an internet browser (Safari), which is unlike the prior app, but that's ok once you get used to it. I did have to experiment with touching the different buttons, so the user interface needs polishing. Also, when I expanded the print (pinch to zoom) it became fuzzy and did not clear up, so that's a bug that needs to be fixed. I'm hoping future updates will be coming soon!

Awful. Does not upload or refresh daily. Always have to delete and reload.

Just doesn’t work now. IPhone says this app needs to be updated in order to work. It’s said that for at least a month. I tried updating to the version on the App Store and it won’t work. Terrible journalism (the SDUT has always picked its political allies, boosting them while slandering their opponents), seems to match their terrible app tech. There is no large scale, reputable media outlet in San Diego anymore.

Terrible Update. The new app is unusable....terrible terrible terrible!!!

Horrible Upgrade. Can you please bring back the ability to read the paper again?

Not Bad, But.... Not a bad news app, but the name/title of the app annoys me. It gets cut-off and appended with “...” If the app name could be shortened to “San Diego U-T” or similar, I will bump my rating to 5 stars!

Sports Poll. You can no longer access the Sports Poll by Phone, and you can cast your vote via sandiegouniontribune.com as directed. I Guess since both the Padres and Chargers are doing terrible the Newspaper would rather not hear from you.

Already subscribe. I have subscribed to the SD Union Tribune for years. Now the app asks me to subscribe when I try to log in. My profile on the website shows that I’m all paid up. I call. They tell me it’s a known problem, and I need to uninstall and reinstall the app. Have done this several times, but doesn’t work. What is most upsetting is that I pay $15.96/month for my subscription, but the listed subscription rate is only $7.99. When I asked, I was told the rates can go up over time, there is no fixed rate. Even if I cancel and start a new subscription, I will be charged $15.96. The rep was obviously speaking from a script and very unhelpful. I am cancelling. This is not worth it. I already subscribe to The NY Times and Washington Post, so this newspaper isn’t worth subscribing to.

Lousy App. The latest changes to the SDUT app are terrible. No North County Local, the copy doesn’t work and neither does the forward. I was told to go to their website ——- Huh?

I want to support local journalism but awful app. I want to support local journalism but this app and the web version is the worst paper I read. Please fix this.

not working properly. When opening articles in reader view, it randomly swallows paragraphs. Tech support was less than helpful.

Not a fan. I found the old app easier to use since it looked like the paper. The biggest problem with the new app is that I can't filter the articles to what is in today's paper. As an alternative at least sort by newest articles since right now the sort seems to be random with older stories appearing before newer ones.

This App is Terrible. The old app was much better and had highlighted links to the page with the rest of the story. This app doesn't work very well on my iPad and keeps getting hung up. Please make the old app available otherwise my digital subscription is worthless.

Blaring ad videos are horrible!. As I quietly scroll through the news, loud ads blare out. I have tried and even contacted tech support to fix the problem. To no avail.
