Unable to read offline. I anticipated that if I download the paper at home, I should be able to then read it offline on the bus or train but stupidly, the app wants to reconnect online before allowing you to open the app. Extremely frustrating and disappointing. Why bother having the download feature at all. Please fix. The Age and Sydney Morning Herald do not have this problem.

Ugly interface, you need an account. Quite ugly and you need an account to view articles. Design - ugly, learn from the sydney morning herald, it's awesome!

Poorly Executed. The authors should look at Bloomberg Businessweek+, Flipboard, and even The Daily for ideas on a better execution. In this case, you should stick with the free website. The app has outdated navigation and content refresh is handled poorly.

Price Increase? Adios!. Not sure what the logic is behind the tripling of the monthly price--significantly higher than any other comparable e-paper--but I cancelled my subscription this afternoon. Very disappointed.

Shocking start to the day. Downloaded the app, restarted the Ipad, then did it again, no joy, it kept reverting me back to the down load page. Still not working....

App no longer recognizes or restores subscription. I’ve had a sub through the app store for some months. But since yesterday, the app no longer recognizes my current sub. When I access a story, I now have to subscribe (which I already have) or restore the sub. When I choose that option to restore, I eventually get a message that says, “Sorry, we couldn’t restore your subscription” after it tries to connect to the app store. Update: Apple tried to help me, but this app simply stopped working in terms of recognizing my subscription. Apple was kind enough to issue a refund, so I’m no longer a subscriber. A shame. I liked the app, but it stopped liking me.

Most frustrating app ever. This would have to be the worst newspaper app ever, constant crashes, unable to load current newspaper etc. Waste of Money.

Hate the App love your paper. I love to wake up in the morning and read your paper. Wish the app didn't freeze and refuse to down load all the time. Guys fix the bugs!

Extremely Impressed!. This update is an impressive step up in line with other highly rated magazine type layouts. (Flipboard, Currents & Zite). You only need to download and read what interests you and a 7pm edition wraps up the day nicely. What I really like is the ability to also read the paper in its standard format. The zoom in and read works well. Highly recommend.

Worst app ever. Whoever wrote this app is obviously not a regular reader of newspapers. When you come back to the app after using it once instead of reloading the front page again and allowing you to choose which stories or sections you want to read, it gives you a series of headings, none of which allow you to find the stories you might have skipped over the first time you switched the app on. Also, when you open the app for the first time, you get the spinning symbol for what appears ages, before a picture comes up. Herald Sun editor, if you want to see a good app, look at the Australian in your News stable.

Hate the new update. I can’t believe after nearly 2 months the have not solved some of the serious problems they created with the latest updates. I am an application developer and know this should be simple to fix. These developers don’t have a clue, the app is an embarrassment. It is slow and hard to navigate. Can no longer click on a photo then flick through the set and can’t even enlarge a photo.

Work experience kid not supervised. The recent ‘improvements’ stuffed up a reasonable and easy to read app. I put Melbourne as my location and I get a message that there’s not enough activity for news. Strange for a Victorian paper. The news feed has very little information and things like sport are non existent. It was all there before. You need to put experienced staff on development of apps to get the right content. Some work experience kid has stuffed the app design. It was working well previously so why change front end content

This is atrocious. I had no issues with the previous app but the Herald Sun have taken a huge step backwards with this version. This app, and I don’t like to be negative but have no choice here, is absolutely atrocious. For some reason they have put in a large header and footer that blocks out a lot of the page. Ummm, why? It serves no purpose. When you come back to read it later on, it takes you back to page one instead of where you left off. The library doesn’t store past editions. Didn’t they beta test their app first? They really need to lift their game and do something about this app as it is hugely disappointing.

Terrible. No proper offline reading option. Hours behind the articles that appear on the website. Clunky user interface. Illogical selection of interest categories that don’t seem to align with the articles or what readers are actually interested in. Just an unpleasant experience to use. Need I go on? Of course, Herald-Sun won’t listen to any of this feedback, just like they clearly haven’t responded to most of the reviews here.

Forget it. The app is a disaster especially when downloading the ‘paper’ edition. Pity i can’t give a review with zero stars. It crashes, the font sizes are inconsistent and when you try to increase them it only increases the reading. How does it get release with these sorts of issues?? Even when they’re reported they’re slow to release an update, which at times has happened without the issues being fixed. I’ll be subscribing to The Age me thinks.

If it’s not broke don’t fix it. Bring back the previous version please. The new update takes ages to load each story and I can’t find a way to update my preferences as I am only getting less than half the news. I have to load up the newspaper to get the whole day. Some page don’t fit on my iPad screen so I am constantly swiping around to see all the stories.

Too hard!!!. I’ve been a subscriber for years, through my old work email address &, since retiring, through my new address. So many articles insist I need to be a subscriber to open them. I humour it & attempt to, it immediately offers my previous address, WHICH DOESN’T EXIST ANYMORE !! And it doesn’t accept saved password for this address. I type in my new address & it rejects this saved password too. And sabotages any attempts to change password , saying account does not exist. Though it recognises the accounts bank account & helps itself when hungry. I gave up a few months ago, just couldn’t be bothered anymore & unsubscribed. A month ago I succumbed to some click bate & gave it one more go! Silly me. It remembered again how to take my money. It worked for a few days before once again only recognising “subscribers”. Can someone at the HS tell me what the answer is, why do you only deal with special people? You actually owe me money now, any response to that?

Needs so work. There are no personalised settings when reading the app news feed for example the back button is high top left - you have to always use two hands. Finding the leader newspaper is impossible and you would have thought a search engine would be built in especially.

Brain games - digital. We subscribe to digital and read on app as it is encouraged. But we cannot do the brain games unless we print off. I am very willing to do this. However, sometimes each game can be clicked on and it a separate frame and opens up and printing is fine. Other days this does not work and the solution is to zoom in, make a screenshot then print the screen shot. I have also tried on desktop computer, same happens. This is such a nuisance. The puzzles in the other menu are not the same or are they the ones I can do. You obviously want people to do the brain games which is why you reduced the comics. How about making it easy and consistent for readers with how we can do this.

I am sick to death of having to continue to re instal the herald sun to gain full access to articles. This has continued far too long and I have just about had enough you are quick to take the monthly payment but the iPad app continues to lock me out this must be bordering on with false advertising or an acc complaint for not delivering on what a customer is paying for surely you must be aware of this problem that has continued for over 12 months now but no explanations or more importantly no apologies and now on 31 October 2022 this is still happening this is very very frustrating and a shocking way to treat loyal customers/readers the next time it happens that’s it for me if your app is unreliable I have to assume your news is too!

Disappointed. Unfortunately main headline is extremely difficult to read on background photos, article titles no longer stand out, like/dislike comments more difficult.....overall significantly less clear, less streamlined and less user friendly making the overall experience a very unpleasant one. Older version unfortunately much better.

It’s supposed to be a newspaper. All I want to be able to do is read the daily paper, without having to go out and buy a hard copy each day. I don’t care for endlessly scrolling newsfeeds. There are plenty of other outlets for that style of news. Alas, the reading of the paper is absolute rubbish on the rare occasion it actually loads correctly. Make it full screen and fluid to turn pages and it would be a winner. This clunky mess they call an app is all but useless. The Herald Sun would do well to check their app ratings and feedback, as would anyone else considering downloading this as a source of information.

Re-enable full screen view. I understand why the new interface to make navigation easier however to actually read the paper (which is what it’s for) you now have a navigation/menu band on the top and the bottom of the paper. You need an option for full screen so you can read the paper and only have the menu/navigation when you need it like it was before this version.

Opening Today’s Paper. When opening today’s paper, it use to open showing the whole page in the screen without scrolling down, it the latest release, you have to now scroll down the page to make sure you haven’t missed anything, can this be fixed please.

Christmas Day Headline. Opened the App on Christmas Day T 6:00pm to see a headline about Covid testing stations meltdown according to Council Mayor. Opened the story and guess what, it’s all about Sydney. What the hell, I’m in Melbourne, I don’t care about Randwick testing stations. Found a brief mention of Melbourne two thirds of the way down, crammed between paragraphs quoting someone in Sydney. This paper, the standard of reporting and the app are going downhill quickly. So many other issues too many to list here. David

What update?!?!?!?. This app is a constant frustration with technical issue after technical issue - randomly logging me out and making it so difficult to log back in. The latest problem (anyone else experiencing this?)is a banner popping up when I try to open the app, preventing me from opening the app and directing me instead to the App Store to download an update that appears to not exist. Terrible app, and every redesign makes it worse!

Updated app could use improvement. The app has gotten better over time, however the latest incarnation could do with some improvements when viewing the “paper as published”. Too much screen real estate is lost because of the persistent header and footer, it would be nice to have an option to hide the header and footer as per the previous version where a single tap would hide/show header. Double tap opens the page at the top left, not where you tapped. Obviously if you doubled tapped on that spot that’s where you want the focus to be and not have to swipe to where you want to go. When reopening the “paper as published” it does not remember where you last left off, don’t really want to scroll through all the page’s again. As I said, an improvement, so my star rating has gone up since my last review (quite a while ago now)

Choosing stories. Mostly a good app. However editing the newsfeed doesn’t work. The premise is you tick the boxes relating to the topics you like and that’s what fills your newsfeed. I, am not interested in afl. So I have not ticked that box. Yet most days when I open the App the first 3 -6 stories are directly about afl. I often don’t bother going on as I get so frustrated seeing so many stories I don’t want.

Just so awful. So glad to see others are equally angry with this update. Why, why has this happened? I would give it zero if I could. The one key thing in a digital reproduction of a paper is actually be able to save it to my digital scrapbook. That used to be so easy via the clipping tool. With this update no clipping tool exists and as other reviews say trying to save anything at all or forward a good photo to my nephew etc etc is just so hard and it no longer looks like it did in the paper. As for trying to save or send the great graphs and boxes of info HS does so well. Just impossible! Why, why has this happened?

Poor design and consumer contempt. The new app is pitiful. It will not let you view a whole page at a time On a smart tablet, and forces you to move all over the screen. Probably demanded by the marketing department to stop a small number of consumers from downloading photos for free as you cannot full screen any photos. But you also cannot full screen any story. I would rate it lower if I could. If you can avoid using it, do so.

New App format. The new app format is terrible, so slow, double tap takes you to the top left of the screen and you can’t view the whole page as there are tabs at the top and bottom of the page, even scrolling through the paper download is hard to swipe to the next page, very annoying and will probably cancel my subscription as a result!

Very poor. I am on the verge of cancelling my subscription (yep, we PAY for this) due to the very poor design which I can sort of, and do, tolerate but the lack of response from News Corp to an issue where a whole section of the feed has not been updated for weeks is about the limit. This is the Smart Daily section which contains the DAILY quiz! Ah well, I’ll have to go back to just the Australian. Same stable, beautiful app. Read the Oz instead.

Unsubscribe. Not worth the continued increasing cost if user experience is not a priority to invest in. As a paid subscriber why am I presented with pop up ads mid article that cover the content I’m reading and cannot be dismissed? The continual app crashing, articles not refreshing, incorrect feeds, issues with downloaded print copies when trying to read offline, the list could go on forever. Clearly by the feedback here that is strong and constant HS has demonstrated they have no intention of investing in user experience and human centered features as people just keep paying the inflated services while they laugh all the way to the bank. Hopefully subscription numbers dropping will force them to reevaluate people who support paid journalism when there are many other services (paid and unpaid) that are so much better and value their readership.

What is with the stupid pop up ads?. I have used this app for years and it has been pretty solid. But the recent addition of an add that pops up and covers the paragraph I am trying to read an won’t remove when you press the x is seriously annoying. You scroll past it and try to creep back only to see it cover the words again!! Advertising fine - having to play games to read something I have already paid for?? Come on.

Rubbish. What has happened to the Herald Sun, it is completely different to what I used to read in the past . It’s confusing and almost impossible to use. Bring back the previous version of the App, which was a lot more user friendly. I am unable to rate this App because it is utterly useless in its presentation. I am still trying to work out how to get today’s paper. The idiot that designed and put together this App should be fired. I think I might switch to another mob. I think that the Herald Sun is trying to force people to buy there hard copy. Is there any way I could get back to the previous version of this App? Or at least delete this new version.

Not user friendly. I used this app years ago and then just returned back to reading the paper online as half the features are not available on the app. It is just terrible, especially when compared to the Australian app. Sadly, I will have to read it from the website if only I could figure out how to get rid of all the annoying pop ups that I can’t minimise. HS you need to sack whoever does your IT.

Love it. I’ve always been a herald sun reader, I decided to get my paper delivered and the digital app is great too. I get really busy some to read all the paper do love going to bed and reading it on my iPad. Competitions, rewards etc are great too even though I’ve never won anything, you have to be in it to run it.

This app is Rubbish. This has made the paper so hard to load and we now get messages showing “Server Error” and cannot load the printed version sometimes until late in the afternoon. We are now paying for something that we cannot get and it is extremely frustrating! It is much less user friendly than the old app which was so easy to use and to set up preferences that suited us.

Gotta love misleading info (in the app). The splash page here says you can cancel your auto renewal by going to your account settings in the app. This is misleading and false advertising (something newscorp does very well), it sends you to your browser for you to log in only to tell you that you have to call their hotline and be battered about why you want to cancel and they want you to pause your subscription to think about it.

Don’t change something if it’s not broken. Another needless app update. The new layout is far less appealing and doesn’t make me feel like I want to read the articles. It doesn’t flow well and the font used in article titles is horrible. Previously you could click on a photo in the article and then scroll through all the other photos in the article, now this is not possible. Please change it back to the old app layout.

Disappointed. Since my last review HS responded to advise I could now return to downloading the paper and read without having the iPad connected to wifi constantly. However sometimes it downloads and most times it does not! It’s very difficult to select the download button as it’s so tiny! Most times when I reopen the app the downloaded paper has disappeared. Losing my patience. Not worth $30 a month! Don’t bother! More problems than it’s worth. The old app was so much better! Why did HS change what was not broken! The new upgrade has not improved the process at all! —————————————————————————————— Have been a subscriber to the digital version of the Herald Sun for many years. Referred family and friends to subscribe. Was highly disappointed by the recent updates. You now need to constantly be connected to the internet to read through the HS. Previously you could download the paper in advance and were not required to be connected as you read through the content. This was particularly handy while travelling or being in an area where you cannot always be connected to the internet. I have spoken to a number of people who share the same opinion. I will definitely be reconsidering my subscription and am sure others will too!

Canceling my subscription. I feel ripped off. This is not what I signed up for 3 years ago. After persisting with the new version of the digital newspaper, I have finally given up and switched to The Age. They seem to have more respect for their newspaper and subscribers. This is a major step down from your previous version. I can only imagine you are now using cheaper software, in which case, are you passing the savings on to your subscribers?

Search please. This application is incredibly well-organized, and the option to download the actual paper is fantastic. Would love to see a search function that allows you to search for specific words and returns a list of pages with a two-line preview of the context. This would make the app five stars. Excellent work, guys.

App crashes, Fixes and says no connection to internet. Now won’t let me cancel subscription. App sadly for $29 a month doesn’t come close to a professional app. It has been around for years. It used to be brilliant easy to use a enjoyable experience. But sadly the last 5 or 6 months constantly crashes, freezes or comes up with page not found. Last month I cancelled my subscription as I had enough of the updated app. The subscription was meant to end on 28th of December another payment has come out and it had auto renewed. I attempted to phone Herald sun to inform them of problems with cancellation of subscription. They told me not there problem it’s apples fault and they receive no money from apple for app. They weren’t interested in app crashing or poor quality reviews for app. This is the first time in a decade that I have had a problem canceling a subscription from the Apple Store. I am hoping it’s some how my fault in my attempt to cancel app subscription . I have double checked and screen shot cancellation details. I am hopeful no more money will be deducted for this inferior app. Herald Sun is a major newspaper in Australia I am amazed that from looking at other reviews similar to mine that they don’t invest in a stable app.

Arrogant. These people do not even bother to respond to the constant issues with down loading their paper. As far as I am concerned they need to refund me the days I cannot down load their paper. Shocking service and a rating of 1 out of 5 by hundreds of readers validates what I am saying. I am taking the matter to the appropriate authorities as their arrogance is inexcusable and service is not up to standard.

Absolutely horrible. Please change the app back to the previous version..I prefer the full screen not just a square in the middle of the screen. Downloaded papers never stay in download section they are always gone even though I have set it to never delete..old version let you download multiple papers at once and now can barely download one.. doesn’t take you back to where you left off if you have to leave the app…PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go back to the old version..would leave zero stars if it was an option

Love the paper on line. However, the new format for the comments is rubbish! I start reading and if I tap too lightly back it goes to the story. I like reading the comments but it is too touchy. Also, the moderators leave writers hanging far too long before publishing. Do better please

Getting worse.. This app seem to be getting worse. It regularly drops the link to detail and I can only see the first page stories. Months ago they disabled the auto launch video ‘feature’ and now it is back. Suddenly videos launch at full audio when you don’t expect them.

What a shocker! Hate it.. What happened to the newspaper I used to look forward to reading? This is clunky and not user friendly. Worse - when you close the app for whatever reason while in the middle of an article, when you return - instead of taking you back to exactly where you were, time and energy is wasted trying to find your lost spot. Bookmarks are ok but the automatic version from before was more personal and satisfying. Many other problems but the general question should be - why replace a well functioning product with a vastly inferior version?

Going backwards no no longer works. Tried to load on three devices but no luck. At least yesterday you could open the paper and suffer the new version which no longer allows you to read the whole page on one screen. I get that on an iPhone but not my full size iPad. How did you get it so wrong and keep making updates that reduce the reader experience? 1 star is too much.

Terrible faulty app. After many years of being a subscriber, i will be cancelling as I have not been able to get full access for about a week. It says i am not subscribed however when i go into the app it says i am subscribed and my subscription will renew 25 March. I have tried reinstalling the app, totally shutting down, resubscribing but nothing works. I think i will just cancel my subscription because why pay for something i cannot use.

Too slow, too fragmented. Why would the Editor remove the app that was working so well. The old app was fast to download, and the favourite categories were easy to access. Instead the new app demands that you access an additional menu to access categories, and the downloads are so comparatively slow, particularly when seeking the latest news. Please, in the interim, revert to the old app, and engage user assistance to test future releases. William

Really ??. I just can’t believe a media company is so really 19th century. Whoever thought PDF’ing the old newspaper and making accessible via an App is either 101 years old, or completely technically absent minded. If I wanted to browse a paper, I would buy. This app is the opposite of agile, its slow, it’s cumbersome, it’s messy, it’s user unfriendly, it’s not suited to devices - basically all the things an app should not be. No wonder the company is struggling. If there is an example of a company being worse to embrace the transition to the digital age - I challenge anyone to find them ... Sigh !!!

Why break something that was working fine.. Reviewed updated. This last update is a major step backwards!! Sometimes I miss a few days and go back to read previous papers but now It doesn’t show papers that I have previously downloaded marked as downloaded anymore so I don’t know what paper I’m up to and also when I go back to continue reading it it doesn’t take me back to the page I was up to anymore it takes me back to the front page. Please revert it back to the way it was because you have removed the handy features that kept me reading it. Now it keeps crashing, cannot download the paper so I can read it when on a plane or out of internet range, doesn’t load the current day. If this doesn’t get fixed soon then not worth having and will probably cancel my subscription.

Upgrade is faulty. Please fix the glitches in the new upgrade. The downloads are gone, now at al of the paper is loaded when you go to flick through it (using “today’s paper”) and the app just keeps shutting down. Luckily one of my neighbours gets your main Melbourne competitor delivered and is happy to share, or it would take me far too long to read the paper each morning. It has closed without warning 6 times this morning alone!

Can someone please fix this. I don't understand why these problems are not getting fixed. We are all having major dramas with this app, the only reason I'm keeping the app is for the footy news. But when you can't even bring up a new days paper to download, it's very frustrating. Then, in an instance when you can download something, you must be near wifi to open it again, which is ridiculous when you want to read it on the train. Please fix it as soon as. The updated app is terrible, a)the whole page does not fit on the screen and then when you tap on a article, then hit the arrow to go back where you just were, it throws you back to the cover. My subscription is under serious threat.

Photo Focused Rather Than News Focused. The old app was far easier to scan at a glance and see what was actually news. This layout puts more emphasis on photos than headlines and summary of the article and is painful to glance at let alone even try and navigate. Did this even get trialed on actual users before launch? Seems most of us who actually read the news find this new app frustrating.

Horrible. What a totally useless update. Can’t read the paper in landscape as the whole page is not on the screen. Whoever thought this way of reading the paper was a good idea obviously doesn’t actually read a newspaper, let alone reviews the feedback from their updates to something that actually worked. If I can’t read the paper in a manner that is easy and convenient, it might be time to give up on the Herald Sun and just read other sources of news that you don’t even have to pay for.

Frustrating. What is with the annoying Binge pop up ad that makes paragraphs of Top Stories content unreadable and won’t close when you tap the cross? I thought that by paying for an app, you would not have to put up with such amateurish self promotion. If you insist on having advertisements, at least get it right so you can still read the articles. Also, please employ some people who can proof read the ‘Top Stories’ articles. You seem to get it (mostly) right with the paper, but the online content is quite often laughable with the amount of spelling and grammatical errors.
