Moon Atlas App Description & Overview

What is moon atlas app? Explore a 3D globe of the Moon

Moon Atlas is an astronomy application that lets you use pinch and finger gestures to manipulate a 3D globe of the Moon. This is a rendered sphere and not a static map image. As you zoom in more labels appear as finer detail comes into view. You can double tap on the labels to get more information about a particular feature.

Moon Atlas displays the phase and libration of the Moon from your chosen location and renders these on the globe. You can switch to a 'Globe' mode that allows you to spin the Moon around to see far side features. The feature database is searchable and can move the globe to a searched feature. The phase can be switched off and the far side is shown in a slightly darker shade of grey.

Date, time and location can be changed. There is also a realtime mode that will update to the current time.

The Moon globe can be shown with north or south at the top or inverted to suit different telescope views.

Over 1800 named features are included as well as 26 spacecraft that reached the surface of the Moon.

In addition, information about the current Moon phase and libration are provided. You can swipe left and right on the phase view to go backwards and forwards a day and on the libration chart to go backwards and forwards a month.

Mars, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn atlases are also available on the App Store!

Also there is Planisphere, a star charting app, available on the App Store!

Moon Atlas Comments & Reviews 2026

Nice but not great. Interesting features and detailed information about the moon. Some missing items though. The moon is not shown in its real position, turning clockwise during at the sky. It would also be nice to include eclipse effects on the moon. Otherwise nice program in addition to a planetarium.

Meh. I was hoping this would be as good as moon globe for iPhone. No even close. I wasted about 4 bucks on this. Way over priced for what it is.

Should be under "Astonomy". great pocket app but would have missed it with just an astronomy search. I like skywalk and skymap as well. Using my NP 101 I'm seeing lunar contast better and sharper than with my CAT or reflector. this app gives a true insight to what is up there.

Great!. This is the moon app I have been waiting for! Having a moon globe and atlas in one app is cool. The app is full of well thought out features: easy switching between globe and atlas, reversable poles and view (perfect for when I am around a telescope), neat search feature, and an easily accessable Help section that is helpful. The only suggestions for a future upgrade are 1.) having it remember location, and 2.) being able to default the startup gps location search to off. Someone really put some work into this, and it shows, so the $5.99 price was worth it to me. Nice job!

Colongitude. Great addition of colongitude in latest version. Important information for observing.

Moon Atlas. Great app for at the eyepiece or just comparing images or even just showing someone what the moon looks like. Great app, inexpensive, never crashes, always great updates. Get it if you are an astronomy freak. lol

Love this app - Highly recommended. Moon Atlas is a handy app that does exactly what it is supposed to do - show you lunar details on a 3D Moon. I use this app on my iPhone and iPad. I love it, especially when hosting a Moon Party for friends and family. A note to the developers... one enhancement I would like to see is the ability to save screen shots as graphic files.

No Better. This app is not any better or offer any other features that free apps for lunar observation. Disappointed. Would like a search option that would not "transport" you there, just show it on the map. Also a tap feature to identify something would be nice rather than having to zoom in to try to find a label.

Good Tool. Very usable. Moon displayed appropriately for all telescopes. Only complaint is Search switching View mode... Not handy for observers.

Almost perfect.. I tried this application last night and it was a great help in identifing items on the moon. My only suggestion is that it retains the site location.

Great App with one complaint.. I love this application. It is easy to use for naked eye viewing, binocular viewing, at the telescope. My only complaint is the resolution when zooming in...gets very fuzzy. Other than that I use it and enjoy it. Good value.

It' ok.. Please add autofill in search box. I'd also like better resolution of images when zooming in. Also, add layers - for example, lunar landing layer that shows the sites. For now, users need to to manually enter every site individually (again, auto populate would be nice). Unless you know the site locations, that is a bit of a hassle. The layer feature would be really nice because right now if you zoom out at all you lose the site you just found. Another layer could be "impact craters" and would only show those. I give it a "3"for now. If you enhanced everything but the resolution I would give strong 4 stars. If you improved the resolution I'd give a very strong 5 stars. Right now, I wont't use this app much in its current form. Very expensive for what it is right now. Sorry I took the chance. Am using first gen iPad.

Moon Atlas Rocks!. This app is great for lunar aficionados! I love the ability to find spacecraft sites and see some facts on each one (note: the develoer needs to correct the Surveyor 3 date - it did not land on the same day as Apollo 11!). I like the night mode for use without destroying your night vision and the ability to flip the view to match that in your telescope. I rarely buy aps, but this one is worth it.

AWSOME. don't understand why the "update" isn't available

Everyone Will Enjoy This Atlas!. Everyone can enjoy all of these atlases as works of art as well as reliable references. They are easy to use and fill the needs of astronomers of all ages. They are well worth the modest fee. It’s an investment in program improvements, and hopefully the creation of atlases for other planets.

Must have net connection. On the ipad the app crashes as soon as it sees there in no net connection.

wonderful!. This is truly a phenomenal app. Intuitive, easy to use, and chock full of information. The 3D globe is wonderful.

Needs a little work.... I wish I could love this app a little more, but there is potential. You can spin the moon and zoom in on anything. Looks great but the images get blurry pretty quickly. I don't expect a google earth degree of detail of course, but a higher degree of resolution should be available. Also, the zoom and pan features are really touchy. It can be frustrating when zooming in or out as the screen will just jump and you lose what you were looking at. More information on key structures would be nice. You only get a couple of lines on The Sea of Tranquility and Appalo 17. Taping on these labels should give you a lot more info and some photos. This app have the potential to be a lot more then a virtual telescope (and a tempermental telescope at that). But, overall, it is still a wonderfull and useful app. The Mars Atlas on the other hand, is a complete mess. Crashes within 5 seconds of launch every single time. Still waiting for a reply on the e-mail I sent the developper. Very disappointing...

Missing important feature. This is a good app for what it does, but for astronomers it’s missing a very important feature: There is no way to set the calendar for a specific date and time and read what the current day is in 10ths of a day, e.g., 9.2 days old. It would also be helpful to know the longitude of the terminator.

Excellent lunar app. The addition of colongitude makes this the first app to my knowledge to provide this important info. THANKS! I do a lot of lunar observing and find this to be a handy and useful iPhone app. I no longer feel compelled to haul out an atlas or notebook. Worth the money.

Good Astronomy Application. Very well done. Good for use at the telescope or using binoculars. Please add a compass rose showing North, South, East, and West directions in next update. This would make it easier to get oriented direction wise than using Latitudes and Longitudes, especially when looking through a telescope.

Exceeded my expectations. I was doing some lunar observations tonight, and the little moon map in my astronomy app (pocket universe) wasn't cutting it. I remembered seeing this a few days ago in the store, but was hesitant to purchase it without any customer feedback posted yet. Boy I'm glad I did! It has every feature I was hoping for and THEN some. You can adjust the moon map to the orientation of your telescope view (inverted, mirrored, etc), it has a very nice night vision interface (something I didn't expect in a moon app, but nice to have), as well as the ability to turn on and off grids, names, etc. The moon can be rotated or locked into proper view. You can easily pinch and zoom, then double tap any prominent feature and get info like where the name came from and how large the feature is. Also the moon map itself is very high resolution. Easily higher than what my C-11 can resolve, yet not so high as to be confusing (it starts to become apparent you are zooming in too much right about when it should, if that makes sense). Seriously, if you have ever thought of buying a moon map for use with telescopic viewing, don't hesitate... get this!

Best Lunar App. This app contains many hundreds of lunar features utilizing a dynamic zoom labeling relationship. I find the map very clear and easy to use. The app also makes use of current libration mapping for time of observation. I highly recommend this app.

Needs work to be valuable. I bought this based on the other reviews, and while the globe and search are nice, there's still problems. Why bother letting you zoom in so that the moon photo gets low resolution and out of focus? Granted, this is a similar issue with other Moon maps. But most disappointing is that zooming in too far throws the moon off screen. A bit disappointed given the price.

Very featureful, but low rez images makes this useless with telescope. Pros: + Takes into account libration and viewers position + Dynamic labeling based on zoom (clearest labeling I’ve seen among apps!) + Provides extra data (including libration plot), not just the map itself! + Has upside-down & mirror mode, and night vision (red) mode. + Full 3D globe if you want or explore from other angles. + All imagery has a good (though static) lighting angle such that terrain relief is clear. Cons: + This turned out to be a BIG one for me: Lowest resolution imagery or any of the moon maps. When out observing with my small (130mm) reflector Telescope, I can clearly see much smaller details than shown in this image. Indeed, the in app chart is such low resolution that I had a hard time identifying craters because identifying details were missing. I ditched for another app that, while worse at showing labels, gave me the detail necessary to identify features accurately.

Excellent resource for observers. Because Moon Atlas accurately simulates lighting and libration, it us excellent for planning observing sessions, especially those near the terminator or the limb. Worth every penny!

Darn near perfect. I've used paper atlases at the eyepiece for years, the best of which are the Times Lunar Atlas & Antonin Rükl's Lunar Atlas. The Sky & Telescope foldable Lunar Quadrant map is also very useful. Lunar atlases on computers are available and, well, laptops are awkward at the eyepiece. So I was very interested in this app as it was supposed to display librations and the terminator properly. It does. Very easy to navigate, smooth scrolling and just enough detail without overwhelming the view. If you need more detail, then Moon Map Pro compliments Moon Atlas Pro well. It would be nice to access the date & time function from the main screen. As it is now, you have to go into Settings and then into Date & Time. Minor quibble. Currently, this is the best at what it does and does it well. Recommended.

This is the Moon in your pocket!. Whether you are just curious about the moon, or a serious amateur astronomer like me, this is the one-stop App for any information about the moon you could desire! I have found it to be an excellent resource while observing through the telescope and it provides fascinating information on the naming of many features as well as their size and location. The full globe of the moon, with comprehensive information for the dark side, make this App a real joy to have and use. The features are well laid out and the overall appearance and usbability of each feature completes this wonderful program. I use it when teaching during public observing sessions, for which it is perfect!

Resolution. For 6 bucks you better work on the res. Mars hd is far better for the price

Nice App. A direct Long/Lat entry screen for cities not in the database would be nice rather than getting close with the screen crosshair, or even the ability to add a city with Long/Lat.
